The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Oh good, it was fine. Tarin said it was fine. That’s what Shin thought, as he walked away. Then, he put Tarin in a box.
He left Tarin in that box for two whole minutes. The man looked rough by the time that was over, on the floor, shaking. It was lucky Lee had not been present. Shin did not need a second asshole. If she had been there, it would have been her gift to him.
Shin came down and helped Tarin to his feet with an offered arm.
”Do you need anything? Another bottle water, some decaf tea? We have a healer who could help with your hands… though he might get perturbed it isn’t anything more severe.”
And Doc Prof would get the memory attached, the one about what caused the injury. Shin had not shared that with Tarin, and suddenly added ”You know what? Never mind. Just put on some disinfectant and clean them, bandaid up and you should be good. I’m sorry we couldn’t get you to three minutes or something. Maybe next time, we can go longer. Or try other scenes.”

He had felt like maybe Tarin would not wish to immediately share, and he had been right. Good on him to have given the man an out. He knew he had been kind of forcing the man’s hand, and how Tarin responded seemed pretty generous to Shin, all things considered. He did not shout or snap or belittle the Asian… he just sounded like he’d had a long day… he was mentally and physically exhausted.
Shin nodded at him, and he did not press the issue. He left it unsaid, but it was obvious. If Tarin ever did want to share, he would listen.
Tarin was not into therapy with a real therapist. Again, Shin did not press. If Tarin had reasons, he had reasons. One that Shin spotted off the top of the reasons list was ‘well I would need to explain my powers, dimwit! And then that would just complicate therapy terribly.’ Fair, fair.
Tarin was on defense now, the question had made him a bit uncomfortable. As unsolicited personal questions are wont to do. But it seemed like he overcame the urge to bolt, because he downed his water and asked for one more go.
”Sure thing, Tarin.” Shin said. ”I’ll go set it up. And sorry… erm,” He left before he could delve deeper into the why and how sorry he actually was. Did not want to accidentally screw up the ‘I’m so cool I won’t press you further on personal details when you say not to’ thing he was aiming for.
A minute later, they started up the training once more.

Wisdom. Yeah. People didn’t usually fix things in a day. It had taken him forever, when his powers broke. Years, for Kealey to get a handle on her empath power. And she still had struggles. Rome, and all that. Not built in one, etc etc.
He nodded and listened to what Tarin had to say. They just walked basic control here. To start. Tarin did not say “to start.” Shin did. Those were his plans.
>>> ”I don’t want Lee to delay medical treatmentbecause she’s looking for stairs so I don’t have to ride in an elevator.”
Right. Falling buildings. People get hurt. He did not want to hinder.
”Of course,” the Asian said.
Tarin tried to dodge his question about training. Shin dug in his heels.
”Most people would say therapy. Training is something else. You don’t have to talk about that detail right now, unless you want to. I am curious, though. And also. Have you tried therapy for your claustrophobia?”

They did several trials, and the time kept increasing. Shin wanted to try countless variations, but kept with the status quo. Because if they helped Tarin overcome a single situation, all the permutations and variables—
Ehhhh. He tried not to think too hard. He would hurt himself.
Finally, Tarin was desperately in need of a break. He looked like he was tired, sweaty, and in need of a change.
Shin said “Sure, one minute.” Then, he came down the stairs from the god room and handed Tarin a bottle of cold water he had snagged from the mini fridge up there.
”So, you’re improving. But I’m worried that just practicing one type of thing might only prepare you to handle one type of thing. And that might not help in the long run.” He grimaced.
How many times would Tarin be in a room that shrunk, for instance? Maybe he’d wind up in an elevator, or a taxi cab or something. But a room that shrunk? That was evil scientist lair stuff.
”Oh, also. You called it training.” Shin added, and looked at Tarin for confirmation. As if the word had weight behind it. But he didn’t delve deeper. He just looked at Tarin. He’d ask more in a minute.

30 once it’s small enough he couldn’t stand any more. Got it.
”Affirmative.” Shin said.
The cube test started, and shin watched and waited. He was ready to end it if Tarin begged, but he wanted to follow their agreement. He didn’t want Tarin getting hurt, and having a breakdown. But sometimes, you gotta work through the pain— so
Eh.
Shin watched and waited.
Tarin wound up on his posterior.
Shin watched and waited.
Eventually, right about when Tarin might have broken, the timer ended and the cube vanished. A harried-looking Tarin gave the thumbs up.
A minute.
”Affirmative.” Shin said.
He loaded up the exact same situation, with a minute timer. Part of him wanted to throw in the walls not shrinking, not shrinking at all. To see how Tarin responded to that. But he also felt like that was another intrusive thought. A mind game. They had trust going on, presently. They could experiment further later. But for now—
The same scenario, a second time. With longer time on the clock.
What if the walls moved in partially, then stopped, and he staggered their shrinkage to lengthen it so everything felt longer and —

Make plans. Never use them. He nodded. He agreed. If done for the right reasons, could it be a sign one cares?
She said she was here. He said thank you.
He had no idea.
“Yeah.”

He had thought about how He could have been more “there.” Gave Lee a shoulder and an ear. But nah. What a useless thought.

What else was there to talk about?
Shin found himself talking about baby stuff. Just making small conversation about baby concerns and how He will have to find a a good preschool when he’s older and how does one find the best, etc etc, and what toys, nattering until a better topic came along.

Tarin said stop. And all of a sudden, a dozen robotics arms with saw blades, or rocket launchers, or tentacles, or hammers, materialized in an attack pattern, aiming to take him down… just kidding. That was just one permutation of the danger room, and not one that materialized in any way, shape or form today. Though for the moment, the mental image did flicker in the back of Shin’s mind. Probably because he could sometimes be sort of an asshole. Inwardly, of course. Stupid intrusive thoughts. The danger room simulation stopped. Tarin’s hotbox became a gone box. The man was beat… box.
Grrr, stop being ridiculous, brain….
Shin gave Tarin a minute to calm down. He didn’t chime in with an “are you okay?” Or an “can I help with anything?” Tarin needed to master himself. Shin could not help him master himself.
Tarin had a few thoughts on the simulation. Oh how it wouldn’t work, if he could just throw in the hat the second things got tough.
”We can do a timer. Or give you something. Like a strikes system. Say strike 3 times, and you get let out? Might be easier and less tempting for you if we do your timer method though. At least, to start. We can start with an arbitrary amount, then build from there. A short time? Like, maybe 30 seconds?”
He arched a questioning eyebrow, realized his face was not visible. He was talking on the speakers. Tarin was all alone in the danger room.
He could brainstorm other ideas while Tarin did his trial. Shin made some tweaks to the system, and another box appeared. This one was not pink. It was made of material shadows. It would also be dark in the room, so Tarin could not see the walls closing in. But if he stuck out an arm, he could feel it happening.
Shin was unsure if that were cruel or not. But, then, they were here to conquer fears. Was the fear of the unknown bigger than the sight of the room getting smaller? Was it a different fear target?
”This one is dark inside, but I made it less stuffy. You shouldn’t have to worry about air in either situation, but I don’t know if that’s one of your triggers or not, so maybe I shouldn’t have told you that part. forget it, if it makes you feel better….” Shin paused.
”Same shrinking room, but this one’s a shadow box. You’re shadow-boxing, Tarin. Ready when you are. The timer target will be 30 seconds, but if you say ‘more’, it can be extended another 30.”
There, they could tweak this until they got it right. They’d get through this, together.

”What does coffee taste like on the other side of the now defunct rift?” Shin queried.
Was it fruitier? More full-bodied? Herbaceous? Like a tea? More alcoholic, more sweet? Like that coffee gathered from animals? Maybe they just needed to introduce Tarin to the most debauched coffee places in New York? Some other time, though. That was a whole other set of experiments, and far less important.
Whatever Tarin’s reply, Shin’s reply was ”Wow! That’s amazing!”
He took the man to the danger room.
He got in the god room, above it all, and started inputting information, turning dials, flipping switches, drawing on a touch pad, erasing and drawing again. None of which Tarin saw.
Shin came on the microphone to ask over the speakers, if Tarin was ready. They were going to try a small box room first. Tarin could walk into the thing. It would shrink slowly, a few centimeters every minute or so, and it didn’t have windows, just a door that locked. He could hear whatever the man said within the box, and monitor it via cameras.
The box appeared. It was hot pink. The interior temperature would sort of reflect the coloration, actually. Little bit hot inside the box. That happens when you trap air.

Ah. A trigger. That made sense. That was a dangerous thing to trigger. One really did need control over something like that. He knew all about having to exercise extreme control, having lived with a power that could shred him, or anything around him, if he was not careful.
Shin nodded.
”I get it. My power can be dangerous to myself and others. I’ve trained to use it in ways that avoid that… but if I slip… that danger never really goes away.”
He thought of Sam, being rapidly lifted into the air in improperly-formed armor made of shards. He found he was frowning. The terse smile he had worn describing his powers had slipped into that bitter sad frown. He shook his head, and forced it into a look of neutrality. Then he sipped his coffee.
”We can try your method. We can experiment, if it doesn’t work. I’ll do whatever I can to help you, Tarin. Shin said. He glanced at the untouched coffee. ”We can start now, if you’re not feeling coffee. I can take mine on the road.”

Black coffee, check.
Shin settled in to listen to Tarin speak about his past. He left some things out. The Asian had a feeling that was a choice. If it became relevant, he might dig. But there was a thing as being too inquisitive.
The man had been claustrophobic, and had undergone … “training.” Not therapy, training. Interesting.
Recent events had dredged up the claustrophobia, exacerbated it. He was not as “in-control” as he once had been. Because he got buried.
That would do it…
The training he had undergone, it seemed like it had involved tight quarters. Being in tight quarters… until he could manage. Shin supposed that might help some people, sometimes. Tarin could do it on his own, but— he didn’t wanna. Okay.
>>> ”Lee said you knew the other Tarin? His powers? The scary ones?” Tarin asked.
Shin nodded.
”Yeah. I was there when Lee died, and things… happened. Did it see every detail, but… I shielded Tarin afterwards, and helped protect him.”
That was one way to put it. Tarin had lost his clothes. Shin had protected… his decency.

One thing the mansion loves to do is help better people. Help them overcome weaknesses. Those weaknesses can be of any sort. Powers, school-related, other. This was firmly in the other camp, and Shin was glad to help.
He had meant to take Tarin out to eat, to discuss whatever. So he had arranged a brief meetup over coffee, so they could go over things better. Phone talks really do not allow for as much “good talk” vibes. Can’t even see a face.
It was a good coffee place. Well-maintained, good service, privacy. People could work on laptops in the corner and have silence, while they drank their coffee. And the place served more than just coffee. They served tea and muffins. If you had tea and muffins. They were at the mansion kitchens. The service was Shin. The server was Shin. And he made a good cup of Joe.
They could go to the danger room after this. It wasn’t so far away. Literally in the same building. But for the moment, shin had asked what Tarin would like, then went and got it. Then he had brought their drinks back to the table. He had wanted to take the man out for drinks, and, well, these were far less alcoholic. But no less delicious.
Shin sat down, and gave the man his drink.
Tarin thanked him for doing this.
Shin nodded. ”Sure, Sure. No problem.” He said. ”You need sugar? Creamer? Or do you prefer it black, like your soul? Ahem bad joke. Anyways. Can you give me the description of your problem again? Where it started might be useful. We need to brainstorm the best way to help you, and Throwing you into a situation might not always be the best.”
Some people responded poorly to being tossed into the deep end.

A hug. Okay. He could accept a hug. He was a hugger. But he was emotional. It was not just a plain hug. A one-sided “accepted” hug. He did hug back. He did let a tear fall. Or two tears. He brushed them away. He wasn’t ashamed to be emotional. Own your emotions. Don’t be a coward!
He backed up a few steps afterwards. Took a breath, another breath. Breathing is good.
She told him he had nothing to apologize for. Okay.
She would be there if he ever needed to “unload.” Okay.
But they were actually here to walk, so…
No, she did not have any confessions at this moment in time for him.
He said “Super,” gathered his kiddo, and began to walk.

He looked over to the woman as she spoke softly, and tried to calm him down. Reassure him. That he was okay. That it had been alright. Because it had been to help Sam, to keep Sam from doing something way too… hotblooded. Wrong.
Maybe Sam had not been meaning to kill. Maybe he had meant to put the person, Travis, down so they could not weasel out of the situation and escape. Shin wanted to give Sam the benefit of the doubt, but the man had been pretty “scorched earth”… “rime-frosted tundra”… about the whole thing.
He nodded slightly at her words.
Sometimes, there were no good options. Sometimes, it was just bad or worse.
Shin let out a choked little half laugh, half sob. Not due to humor. But because it had triggered a memory, and it had been so ridiculous, so “definition of worse”, he had to confide it.
”I was so out of it, so emotional over the whole thing… at the time, I almost considered making a fulcrum and lever out of shards to launch Cold Steel sky high. Like some Looney Tunes stuff. First thought. But the logistics, and… and that was crazy. It wouldn’t have even worked, but what else can you think but crazy things, when you have to come up with ideas on how to bring a friend down? Like, at some point I actually contemplated scenarios for how I would stop fellow X-men, like some sort of protocols for if anyone got off the rails, and— I’d hope they would do the same for me, we fight such scary people some times, but—“ He was rambling now, had done one big ol run on sentence, and how would Lee even respond to that. If he asked her, if he said “isn’t that crazy?” She would say “uh yeah it is, but sometimes we have only bad and worse.” She would just reassure him he had done his best.
He cleared his throat, and brushed some stray water that had wound up on the sides of his eyes from some freak rain storm or something centralized wholly on the area directly around him, and only him. Rain. Yeah. Rain.
”Thanks.” His voice was weak, ”That helps. Didn’t really mean to unload on you like that, but I appreciate that— er ahem. So anyways. Do you have any stuff you want to confide in me about? Turnabout is FairPlay? And, god. Never mind. My brain can be so weird sometimes. Weren’t we just walking? Let’s do that.”

A smile. The target of Sam’s wrath had a smile on their face. He caught it, even from that far off.
Sam’s ice clone was still holding them in place. They were battered, probably broken in some places. And smiling. Like the fact Sam had made a bad show of things and people were watching him made things sweet as cream.
The Asian swaggered up to the trapped and injured person. Looked them dead in the eyes. In a quiet voice, he told the person just what he thought of her.
”“Listen here, Travis touchdown. I am not on your side. There are no more heroes in this desperate struggle. I saved him, not you. And you are still going to get put away for whatever you did. For a very long time.”
He pulled away from them, then started walking towards the news reporters. He should really make a statement. Shin never let Sam get out of his range, and never took his attention fully off Travis. Not for long enough for them to escape. He approached the reporters with a side eye towards the woman every moment or so, and tried to explain the situation as he saw it.
This was a child abuser. They had targeted the mansion. Sam had been wrought with wroth. Nobody makes a habit of acting like he did, and no. There was no schism. Whatever that was. Someone needed to call the cops on the abuser. Clearly, they were the lowest of the low.
After five minutes, he started the process of letting Cold Steel down. Maybe he already had?

The story Sam had shared with Lee probably had not been the full tale. Bite sized. Like a tea sandwich. An hors douvre. Not too filling. Apparently he had a history of attentiveness to peoples dietary concerns. Better that than shoveling lies down their throats, He supposed. Feeding them trash.
She had been told about the kid, but not every bit of drama Sam had experienced over the years.
Shin nodded. Not optimal. Made sense. Sam’s dramas could feed the city for a year. Hence, bits and bites.
She asked how Sam was doing. How they both were doing. Together. Personally.
He grimaced. ”Were fine. I put him in what amounts to an Iron Maiden made of shards, then flew him 200 feet in the air at like 50 miles per hour or something. In front of cameras. He’s fine. The news coverage though… dunno”. He shrugged one shoulder.
He had covered him in shards armor and levitated the man up, which Shin had stayed in ground level talks with media and mystic. Usually the armor takes time to build, out of safety concerns. To prevent razors from digging in from the razor Armor he had made, from razors. He had done a rush job, a hatchet job. Nobody should have worn that Armor. Sam had.
”It hurt him a lot, the shard armor Iron Maiden i put him in. Took off the safeties. Lot of razors at odd angles. Painful power rangers suit. Usually make or safe inside. But there wasn’t time. He was going to kill…. Sorry.” He stopped to lean over the baby’s pram, and took a while minute to focus on smiling at the kid, and collecting himself. Calming down.
