The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Jacen was feeling exceptionally pleased with himself though he tried to keep his emotions from showing to much. Obviously he wanted to look happy and relaxed but he didn't want Claire to know exactly how excited he was to be going out with her. Honestly, most of the girls he had gone out with were the attractive but not so brightly girls that were just as interested in being physical as he was. This was one of the few times he met a woman that actually intrigued him intelletually instead of just physically.
"Interesting woman... very interesting woman." He thought to himself as the three of them took their places in the check out line.
Steeling a glanced at Katrina out of the corner of his eyes Jacen wondered why she was being so quiet. He didn't knwo her so it was quite possible that she was just shy and this was her normal way of acting.
"So Katrina, how's school going? Got any big plans for your upcoming Spring Break?" Jacen asked easily, doing his best to make conversation that would include the young woman. He didn't mind talking to Katrina at the moment, just so long as he get Claire to himself on the date. After all, kids were fine, but adults needed some alone time on occasion.
Normally Jacen would have felt bad about the tomatoes all over again when Katrina happened to mention them but the excitement of getting a chance to go out with Claire completely overroad those negative feelings.
“Anyway, you should call so we can arrange a meeting place, too.” Claire spoke up as Katrina set about rearranging the groceries in their cart so that they would be a little more secure.
"Sounds great." Jacen replied with a grin, "I'll give you a call tonight or tomorrow then. But here, let me help you with your groceries. It's the least I can do for the trouble I caused."
He was doing his best to remain pilot and after smiling at Claire again, Jacen turned his gaze toward the younger girl and offered her a smile as well. Who would have thought that a little accident in the grocery store could lead to a date? If this ended up going into any type of relationship it would be one of the funniest stories in history.
"I never would have thought that my day at the grocery store would end up with my actually crashing into you two ladies." Jacen said with a chuckle as he took control of the women's heavy cart, leaving his much lighter cart for one of them to take care of, "Did you get everything you needed or do you need to pick up another item or two?"
He was clueless... clueless about kids, clueless about teenagers, and even more clueless about how those teens might feel about their Mom accepting a date with a stranger. Yep... he was clueless.
“No we didn’t for your information. He gave me the bird and here we are." The naked girl said as thought it were the most obvious thing int he world even though all she was doing was leaving Jacen dumbfounded.
"Huh?"
“Or was it him….” She suddenly said in obvious confusion as she pointed to the other twin and then leaned forward and returned to her counting. Jacen continued to listen to the three individuals blabber on with somewhat rapt attention. He was doing his best to not be distracted but every time the girl turned or leaned while continuing her 'eenie, meenie, miney' he was flashed different parts of her body that no red blooded man could truly ignore.
Using all of the self control he could harness, Jacen focused on the one of the three that seemed to actually be able to speak in coherent sentences that made sense.
"My apologies, I did not intend to impact your truck, per say. We will be on our way as soon as my brother regains his senses."
"Per say?" Jacen asked, his one eyebrow still quirked in obvious disbelief as he continued to try and ignore the pale, naked skin that was on display everywhere. He would have enjoyed the view if it hadn't been for the twins that had decided to pop in along with their girlfriend or something, but man... why did this stuff happen to him?! "So that means you meant for something else to impact my truck?"
"If you do have clothing to spare, perhaps you should give them to the lady, first."
"Yeah. What he said."
"Nope... you three obviously weren't from a frat party!" Jacen said in obvious frustration as he strode around the truck, making sure to keep the vehicle between himself and the boy that was now hiding behind it, "At least two of you are straight from the fun house!"
Snatching open the back of his crew cab Jacen pulled out his heavy camouflage jacket that he often wore hunting and tossed it over to the woman. It was large and baggy so it would cover up all of the important parts but there was no way it was going to hide her legs. "Sexy legs at that." Jacen thought before mentally slapping himself, "Bad! Bad! Crazy woman... let's stay away from the crazy woman!"
After slamming the door closed Jacen walked back to the bed of his truck and looked in. There was an old tarp that the deer was laying on, along with with an old, ratty looking blanket. Seeing as how he could not allow the deer to drip blood onto his new truck, he could only take one of those items.
"And you quit laughing." Jacen muttered to the deer as its tongue lolled out in death/laughter, "I'm gonna eat you!" Quickly pulling out the old blanket Jacen walked back around the truck, offering it to the young man that was still sitting on the hood of his truck. "Here... I'm afraid you and your brother will have to share."
Glancing back toward the rear of the truck just to make sure he didn't see any more of what he really didn't want to see, Jacen once again found himself staring at the glassy eyes of his buck. "The only way this day gets any weirder is if that thing starts laughing out loud..."
“I would like that, yes. Do you have plans for this weekend? I'm free all day Saturday, so whenever you are free would be fine by me. Here, let me give you my number.”
Jacen felt like pumping his fist in success. Anytime he had ever asked out a woman out his heart always lept to his throat as he waited for their response. Those few seconds always felt like an eternity but now he was able to breathe once again.
"Saturday would be perfect." The man replied as he reached out and accepted the number that Claire was offering him, "Would you rather get together for dinner or just for drinks? Whichever you're more comfortable with will be just fine by me. Maybe about 7:00?"
Pausing a moment to let Claire give him an answer, Jacen suddenly had a thought. Reaching into his pocket Jacen fished out an old gas receipt from his pocket and quickly scribbled down his own cell phone number.
"If anything comes up, or you need to reschedule just give me a call. Maybe... um... well... nevermind." Jacen began before quickly stopping. He had been about to offer the idea of taking both Claire and Katrina to a movie sometime, but that was to much to fast. He didn't even know whether he and Claire would really connect at all so that was an invitation that would just have to wait until a later time.
Just as Jacen's hand grabbed hold of the correct map, he hard a thud against his windshield. Jerking up straight the man's hands both gripped the wheel firmly as he sat up and began to just react to the situation.
"Shit!" Jacen swore as his mind raced through so many thoughts in such a short span of time. "I hit something... something big." He thought as his foot darted toward the brake pedal, stopping just short of his as his brain finally clicked on what he was seeing. A very attractive, albeit unexpected derriere was now planted firmly against his windshield.
"Holy..." Jacen breathed as his mind tried to comprehend exactly what he was seeing. How in the world had a naked woman appeared on his windshield? Blinking quickly, trying to make sure what he was seeing was real, he suddenly heard two more thuds. And just that quickly Jacen's wonderful view was spoiled by the backside of two boys.
"Ugh!" He muttered under his breath, his eyes automatically flicking back down to the instrument panel as he gently applied the brakes in order to slow the vehicle to a stop without throwing his new passengers to the ground. "I was actually beginning to enjoy this dream for just a minute."
In a matter of seconds the truck was stopped and the parking brake was firmly applied. After opening the door Jacen began to climb out, but then stopped and quickly retrieved the keys from the ignition before climbing out. Who knew what kind of weirdos these three would turn out to be... after all, who in their right mind ran around in the back woods butt naked? "Emphasis on the butt."
Walking around to the front of the truck Jacen looked up at the three individuals that were now perched on the windshield and hood of his truck. Doing his best to keep his eyes on their faces and not on anything else that might show itself, Jacen crossed his arms over his chest and raised on eyebrow questioningly.
"How the hell did you three jump onto a moving truck and what in the world are you all doing out here naked?" He asked bluntly, his voice somewhat accusing, "Did you three get drunk at a college party last night or something and so your buddies left you all behind?"
The three kids didn't really look like they were college age but who could tell anymore. So many young kids looked older while so many college student looks like little kids that there was really no way to tell. "Why in the world did there have to be three?" Jacen wondered as an abstract thought pushed its way into his head, "I would have been more than happy with just the hottie. But this... this is just wrong."
The royal blue Chevy Colorado moved down the Pennsylvania country dirt road without the slightest flinch. A heavy duty truck built with work and off roading in mind, it was the perfect vehicle for a man like Jacen King. Dressed in black military boots, camo pants, and a camo sweat shirt the former Ranger had just completed a successful hunt. Stowed in the bed of the truck was the deer carcase that he was now transporting to be butchered into the various venison pieces that he enjoyed so much. He was already day dreaming about the pile of deer jerky that this particular buck would provide.
Within the crew cab of the truck was what at first glance looked like a typical gun rack that you would see in most southerner's trucks. However, upon closer examination it was clear that there were no guns hanging in the back. Instead, a beautiful Hatfield Take-Down Recurve Bow was hung lovingly on its padded pegs, along with a quiver containing 12 broad-head arrows.
The day was cool but with the bright sunshine coming down it kept things from being to cold. There were even some bugs out, which was strange for winter, with various birds out trying to grab a snack. Reaching over, Jacen flipped on the radio and began to sing along with the first country station that he came to. He was a professional at his job but when he was able to get away, he quickly turned into what most people called a "good ol' boy". This was the life... nature... hunting... and a big truck. What more could a man ask for?
After making sure that the stretch of road in front of him continued on straight and clear for at least a few hundred yards, Jacen leaned over to his glove compartment and opened it, searching for the local map he had bought at a gas station several hours earlier. "That guy marked the quickest way back to the highway... if I can just find the map!" Jacen grumbled under his breath as he took his eyes off the road, and his foot off the accelerator, allowing the vehicle to slow while he continued his search.
"Wonder if any of those teachers are guys..." Jacen wondered to himself as soon as Claire made her comments. He had to admit to himself that it would be nice to know if there was competition or not, but at the same time he didn't care. She seemed interested in getting together with him at a later time so that had to mean there wasn't anybody to important in her life at the moment.
"Well, maybe you'd let me take you out for dinner or drinks." Jacen offered, trying to making his tone seem like the idea had just popped into his mind even though he had been thinking about it for quite a while now, "I might even be able to show you some of the New York night life that you haven't seen yet."
It was the same every time any guy asking a woman out... there was the small feeling of dread down in the pit of your stomach just on the off chance the she said know. How should you react if that happened? Be offended? Just let it roll of your back? Pretend to be understanding even though you really didn't get it?
"Just say yes..." Jacen found himself mentally begging, "Please say yes."
"You and your daughter must be close." Jacen observed immediately. After Claire's statement about someone special coming into both her and her daughter's lives he was slightly concerned about whether he should really proceed to asking her out. Obviously he wasn't looking for long term commitement... not in a first date. If anything he was just looking for a nice evening out and about but was Claire open for something like that or would she be judging every word he said on whether he could make a good father or not?
"So many questions but I gotta decide something..."
"It's nice to see that. A lot of parents let their kids run rampant without really being concerned about their lives."
That was about all of the serious talking Jacen wanted to offer at the moment. He didn't it to seem like he was trying to fulfill her dreams for a man or anything along those lines but he was curious about what opportunities there might be between the two of them.
"You must stay pretty busy at the school since you're in charge of the food." Jacen changed the subject as smoothly as he could, "Do you ever get a chance to go out and have some adult fun?"
He was close... very close but he still had committed yet. There was still an opportunity on both their parts to begin to pull away from the subject but if she didn't, he wasn't going to either. An invitation to dinner or drinks was right around the corner if she kept playing along.
So the two of them shared something in common... neither one still had their parents. It wasn't something Jacen felt like dwelling on but it did give them at least some type of connection.
“And how do you know that you haven't attracted trouble after all?” Claire teased back, emphasizing the word attracted just a little bit. Perhaps they had more of a connection than just two people that had lost their parents however long ago... "Wasn't there an old show called the love connection?" Jacen thought back as he returned Claire's smile with a grin of his own, "To bad I never saw it."
"Well if you're middle name happens to be trouble then I don't think I mind having it come my way." Jacen answer was off the cuff. It had been a little while since his last date or serious flirting sessions... a couple months now? However long it had been, Jacen felt that he was out of practice when really he wasn't. Maybe he had a chance for that date with Claire after all.
"Play it cool... don't rush anything." Jacen lectured himself in his mind as he tried to think of the next thing to say, "Keep the conversation going and then pop the question in a few more minutes. Keep her relaxed and at ease."
"If you don't mind my asking, how does a woman that can cause such a... fatal attraction get away with not having a boyfriend?" Jacen spoke up, the teasing grin still obvious on his face. He was stretching because he couldn't know for sure that she didn't have a boyfriend, but he was hopeful. If she did have a boyfriend she wouldn't have even begun flirting with him... would she?
“Wow. That's a bit more dangerous than pulling people over for speeding and busting underage parties. Doesn't the SWAT team have to deal with terrorists and serial killers and things of that variety? Your family must worry about you every time you go to work.”
Jacen was beginning to get the feeling that he was being examined and analyzed just as much as he was trying to figure out Claire. Her questions seems innocuous, but as he thought about it he realized that he was giving out a lot of information about himself. "Is she just passing the time while she waits for her daughter or does she have another reason?"
"Well I don't have any family to worry about me. My parents died several years ago while I was still in the army so basically my brothers in the military and then my brothers on S.W.A.T. are all the family I got." Luke answer rather matter-of-factly. His tone showed that while he wasn't sorry for himself, he wasn't happy about it either. It was just a fact of life that had been dealt with long ago.
“Oh my. It isn't enough that you face such danger for a living, you have to deal with it in your free time, too? Don't you have anything better to do than invite trouble to the bank? Not that stopping armed robberies isn't a noble thing to do.”
"Of course I have better things to do than invite trouble." Jacen replied as he joined in with the teasing, "I'd much rather be standing here chatting with a beautiful woman, and low and behold I am. No attracting trouble, just two single people sharing some conversation."
Jacen was being completely honest but at the same time he was seeing just how Claire might take the compliment. If she accepted the compliment without being offended then maybe it would open up an opportunity for him to ask about those drinks... otherwise it had been fun while it lasted.
“About a year now, a little over that, maybe. I kind of poked around for awhile before finding the kitchen job this summer. Previously we lived in Virginia, but things got a little... crowded there. There was a school up here that seemed perfect for Katrina, so we came up here. I'm kind of liking the big city life, thus far. People are nicer than I expected New Yorkers to be. I haven't even had my wallet stolen yet!”
Jacen had to chuckle at that statement. New Yorker's weren't nice but they weren't mean either. They were people just like the people you would find in any other city but yet everyone still seemed surprised to discover that fact.
"Well that's all in thanks for the dedicated service of officers like myself." He replied, teasing Claire just a little, "Otherwise your wallet would have been stolen multiple times by now! And the people here are nicer than most expect... after going through so much most everyone has learned you have to help out your fellow citizens if you want things to go smoothly."
It was the truth. After so many things having happened here in the city, whether it was caused by mutants or by humans, New Yorker's had learned that they couldn't make do as an island. Everyone had to connect with their neighbors in order to survive and while that didn't mean they had to stand outside have little chats all the time, it did mean they would keep an eye on your house while you were away.
“So, I'll bet being in the NYPD is pretty exciting. Why did you decide to be a cop, and in New York City of all places? I would think that is one of the more difficult jobs to do in one of the most difficult cities.”
"Well... I'm not just a cop." Jacen replied after a moment. People were always willing to accept you when you said you were a cop but there was something different about when you said you were a S.W.A.T. team member. "I'm a member of the New York S.W.A.T. teams. After I got out of the military I kind of had my choice between the NYPD or the LAPD, but I like snow so New York was my choice."
Hoping that he hadn't scared her off yet, Jacen decided he had better explain the choice a little more fully. Claire was intriguing and if she could get past his career choice they might have a chance for at least drinks or dinner maybe. "After being in the Rangers I was so used to action that I had to do something with my skills. I personally didn't care for the choice of being a murder or mercenary," Jacen was trying to throw a little bit of humor into his reasoning but it never crossed his mind that it might come off as touch... wrong. "But I wanted to be able to help in situation than not just anyone could. So, I joined the NYPD and signed up for S.W.A.T. training. Since I was fresh from the military I was still fit so I could get through that pretty easy. And now, I do what needs done. Unfortunately, thing sometimes even happen off duty. I was in a bank the other day when some guys came in to rob the place. It would have turned out bad but there was a mutant in there that could manipulate ice. He saved a lot of lives."
A boarding school... that wasn't all that strange since there were plenty of those kind of schools in the area around New York City. Heck, there were even a couple directly inside the city limits. Seeing absolutely nothing strange in Claire's answer, Jacen had no reason to pursue the subject or try and discover whether she and her daughter were mutants. In fact, mutants were the farthest thing from Jacen's mind as he continued chatting with this attractive woman.
"I'm a member of the NYPD but before that I was an Army Ranger." Jacen replied with a slight smile. He knew that the very statement would show that he was a man capable of violence, but he hoped that his actions and words would help to convey a different side of himself. He could fight necessary... he could even kill when necessary, but he was still a man just like any other.
"I've been with the police department for a little over two years now. I was even given the privilege of going to D.C. to help train their department when things were going crazy because of the Registration Act. The city's quieted down since that was overturned but... I'm talking to much." Jacen offered extra information about himself until he finally realized that he might have been rambling.
"How about you? How long have you been in the area?"
Jacen had never thought that he had a soft spot for blondes, but this particular woman was swiftly claiming all of his attention. Maybe it was the fact that she was able to carry on a conversation with some intelligence and maybe it was the fact that no other man had been able to claim this woman as their own. There had to have been a relationship at some point in the past since her daughter Katrina was around but what had happened? Was Claire dating someone right now or was she single? There were so many questions and so little time to cover them.
Jacen chuckled softly to himself as the youthful girl scampered off. Turning back to Claire he nodded, his smile broadening every so slightly. "It's a pleasure to meet you as well Claire, and your daughter Katrina."
Completely on autopilot, Jacen's mind was sizing up the woman before him. It was obviously just from this brief interplay that she and her daughter was close and with no ring on her hand it was apparent that a husband/father was out of the pictures possibly even non-existent. Claire's black boots and long gray woolen coat were typical winter attire but he could see just the hint of a green skirt peeking out below the bottom of her coat. Classy was a word that immediately came to mind. Her blond hair was a touch disheveled, immediately explained by the tip of a hat that stuck out from her coat pocket, but for the most part its bun had maintained some semblance of order. Her cheeks were still a touch rosy from the cold air outside but the natural paleness of her skin could still be seen. While not a super model she had a classic beauty to her that couldn't be found just anywhere.
"What kind of man would let a woman and daughter like these two get away?" Jacen though, somewhat bewildered but at the same time accepting that there were some twisted and messed up people in the world. For all he knew Claire could have been a victim of abuse at one point though she seemed a little to confident for that to be the case.
"Let me get that for you Claire, and please call me Jacen." The S.W.A.T. officer spoke up as he stepped away from his own light cart and gently but firmly claimed control of the mother's overloaded cart. It was the work of only a moment to get both carts safely stowed in a little more out of the way place while an attentive employee was already moving in on the situation to begin clean up. While accepting that it was the employee's job Jacen also knew he had added to that job so after excusing himself away from Claire for just a moment he had walked over to the employee and given them a ten dollar bill for handling the messy side of the situation.
"You've got quite a load of food there for just you two ladies." Jacen spoke up as he walked back over to where the Claire and the two carts remained, "Throwing a party or are you just planning on having a lot of friends and family vacationing with you."
Jacen's tone was teasing but at the same point his mind was sharp as he worked on gathering more information about this woman. Just in the short meeting he already head questions about both Claire and her daughter and the only he could find out anything was by asking.
"Just keep it light... light conversation but with important questions that get information."
"No... no need to apologize, it was all my fault." Jacen spoke up, obviously chagrined as he moved around to help the mother and daughter gather up the groceries that had fallen to the floor. "I was distracted and wasn't paying attention."
For a man to admit fault was always a difficult thing and it was even more difficult to do it in front of an attractive woman. As the mother's left hand reached out to snag one of the various items on the floor Jacen noticed that she wasn't wearing a ring. It wasn't that he was out to snag a date at every opportunity, but as with most single men, it had almost become a habit.
Turning toward the younger girl Jacen offered her a smile as he picked up the loaf of bread and placed it back on her overloaded cart. "I am really sorry about that." He said again, his attention flickering back and forth between mother and daughter, "I'll be glad to pay for the broken eggs and anything else that got ruined. My name's Jacen King by the way."
"Better get the spaghetti stuff while I'm here... always good to have on hand." Jacen muttered to himself after several moments of silent contemplation. He still had a nagging suspicion in the back of his mind that he was missing something but since he hadn't remembered it yet it was best just to move on. If something popped to the forefront of his mind before he checked out then he could go grab it but for now he'd just focus on his basic ingredients.
Nodding to himself, obviously pleased with his decision Jacen lifted his head and took one strong stride forward, his cart being propelled in front of him with enough force and speed that, while not dangerous, could easily catch another person by surprise. It was right at that moment disaster struck.
As Jacen took the step forward and out of the aisle he caught movement out of the corner of his eye. A mother and daughter with a rather overloaded looking cart. If he hadn't been lost in thought and had been paying more attention he could have easily avoided them both but sadly that was not case. With his strong push his own shopping cart slammed firmly against the young girl's shopping cart.
