The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Jacen grinned and waved to the two ladies before turning and pushing his cart off toward his truck. This shopping trip had gone a different direction than any other he could remember but he deffinately wasn't going to be complaining. Claire was an interesting woman and he was already beginning to look forward to getting together that weekend.
No matter what Lily said, there was always a certain point with alcoholic beverages that someone became willing to do the embarrassing things that they wouldn't normally do. He had seen pictures of some of the couples that had attended that pro-mutant Valentines Ball the previous weekend. After seeing some of the outfits you knew that there was no other explanation than the fact that some people got smashed before going to the party. There had even been a girl there dressed up like a character from one of those anime cartoons. As risque at the costume had been there was no doubt that 'liquid courage' had been involved at some point.
"Wonder how much she had to drink before going." Jacen thought with a silent chuckle as he took a sip of his drink. However, before he could simply enjoy the thought a little more, Lily leaned over to murmur some more important news.
"Squeezed brains out with his bare hands?" Jacen murmured back, making sure he had heard right. If what Lily said was correct then that man could easily be the cause of some of the problems around this place.
Turning around Jacen listened to Lily address the man as he continued to sip at his drink. Brickson's reaction was strange to say the least but Jacen found his mind focusing on one detail that the main had just given out.
"Jenny? Why in the world is he calling Lily, Jenny?"
Lowering his drink, Jacen watched curiously as both Brickson and a cat-woman walked off toward the pool table. "Friend of yours huh." He spoke wryly as glanced around the room, making sure to always keep it where he could at least see Brickson out of the corner of his eye, "Why'd he call you Jenny?"
Lily was still a woman of mystery and though Jacen had to admit he didn't want to dig to deeply into her background, he did want to know a few things about her. Maybe Jennifer or something like that was her middle name... yeah... that had to be it. Middle names always messed things up.
This was a strange woman but there were plenty of strange people in New York City so Jacen really didn't think anything of it. With one last vengeful glance toward the young man that was currently laying unconscious on the path, Jacen turned and began to walk away, guiding the woman while continually scanning the area for any friends that the attacker might have had.
"I'm Jacen." He offered, providing his first name in order to establish some sort of trust. A victim like this was probably still in shock and if she began to trust him he might just be able to convince her to go to the ER or at the least go to the Police Station. "Mind telling me what happened?"
Even as he maintained some basic conversation, Jacen had to admire the young woman just a little. He had worked with plenty of men that couldn't stand pain and even though it was obvious that her hand was hurting, she was handling it quite well. Part of it had to be the shock that was setting in but some of it had to be her personality as well. "If she's always this stoic she would have made a good Ranger." Jacen admitted to himself as the pair walked along the darkened path, "A really good one."
(OOC: *waves left hand* Hmmm... nothing happened. *waves right hand and magically time jumps forward* YES! )
IC: The drive back to New York was long. Make that really long. Make that EXTREMELY long, especially when you have two young people doing their best to have a gross out contest in the back seat!
"I should take back the blanket and jacket." Jacen thought somewhat vengefully as he glanced back in the mirror to see Calley & Petunia still going at it, "I bet that would finish up their gross out contest!" The thought was entertaining and for a few moments, Jacen allowed himself to entertain it as he tried to figure out how it would work. Obviously the blanket could be snatched away from Calley with relative ease but the jacket on Miss Petunia would be much more difficult. If he could get her to lean toward the front of the vehicle it was large enough he could probably snatch it up and over her head but there was no guarantee it would work. After all, it could just get stuck part way. "But even part way might be enough to shut the two of them up!"
Finally, after admitting to himself that such an act would probably make three young people in the back seat think he was some sort of pervert, Jacen threw out that plan. Truly his only hope for ending the contest and getting back to some sort of peace and quiet would be to get to the school as quickly as possible! Glancing over at a sign on the highway, Jacen did some quick mental figuring.
"About, ten or fifteen more minutes. Then I can have blessed silence. Hallelughia!"
"So what kind of business are you in Slate?" Jacen asked, his mind going back to the young man's earlier comment about taking over the family business, "Was it a family restaurant, store, or maybe a shipping company or something like that?" He didn't know why those three possibilities had sprung to the forefront of his mind but for some reason they had. If it was a restaurant... well... after meeting Calley and listening to him, there was really no way Jacen could eat at a restaurant he was involved with. No matter how professional Slate was, who in their right mind would trust Calley with their food?
Jacen frowned slightly at the young womans response. An injury like this would be treated at the emergency room and with an assault or attempted murder charge filed, there would be no bill sent to the young woman. Besides, she had to go to the emergency room if she was going to file charges.
"Don't you want to file charges?" Jacen asked as he reached over to grip the young woman's wrist and lift her hand up where he could examine it. There wasn't much light in this particular area of the path and the normal red or burgundy blood instead looked almost pitch black. Later he might think that he had missed a sign that would warn him of the pure evil that exuded from the young woman but at the moment he was to busy trying to help someone he thought was completely innocent.
Reaching under the edge of his sweatshirt he grabbed hold of the white t-shirt that was underneath and with a strong pulled ripped a ragged looking strip of fabric off of it. Following the motion again Jacen wripped off a second piece and then looked at the knife as he wrapped one of the piece of cloth around the blade that was still sticking up above the skin.
"This needs to come out so if we're not going to the emergency room we can do it here." Jacen's voice was grim as he reached up and grabbed only the top inch of the handle, making sure not to disturb any finger prints that might be on the handle. "Ready?"
Once the woman had said some sort of consenting word or made some sort of consenting noise, Jacen pulled firmly, sliding the razor sharp blade cleanly from the wound. Moving quickly he took the extra piece of fabric he had torn off of his shirt and wound it several times around her hand, temporarily staunching the flow of blood.
"I've got a first aid kit in the car." Jacen said as he held the knife loosely with the fingertips of his left hand and lifted his gaze up to the young woman's face, "Let's see about getting you patched up and if I still can't convince you to press charges then I'll drive you home. I think you've had enough excitement for a while."
In many ways this dive of a bar lived up to its named of being just a 'Hole In The Wall'. Thankfully though everything was clean and at first glance the bar was quite obviously well stocked. Jacen was driving so while he might sip at something, he wouldn't be drinking nearly what his body could handle. After all, quality was far more important than quantity.
"Hopefully they've got a decent bottle of scotch or burbon back there." He thought to himself rather wryly, "Instead of the cheap stuff most places serve the locals in order to get them drunk fast."
Right then Lily's voice broke through his thought and Jacen had to grin over at the beautiful blond. "How about we grab a drink to loosen up before we hit the floor?" He asked before immediately grabbing the young woman's hand and leading her toward the bar.
"Besides, I'm curious to see how many drinks it takes to get you up on that pole." Jacen said with a quick tease before turning back to the brunette bartender that was looking at him rather expectantly. "Burbon straight up. And whatever the lady's having." He ordered quickly as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a twenty and a ten. Most of his money was safely stowed in his wallet, but in a place like this Jacen always chose to keep at least some money in his pocket so that he didn't advertise exactly how much money he had in his wallet. It was never a good idea to go around inviting trouble, of course Jacen had no idea just how well his aura could do the inviting for him.
Even though Jacen was spending so much time reflectingly inwardly as he ran, his senses were still aware of his suroundings. The taste of salt was on his lips and the muscles in his calves and thighs were beginning to ache just slightly. Up in the trees he could hear crickets chirping and the occasional hoot from an owl. Even though most of the paths were shadowed, his eyes had long since adjusted meaning that he could see quite well, though not as well as during the day.
"Should I get tested?" Jacen pondered as he maintained his steady pace down the path, "Is there anywhere it can be done privately? If I really am a mutant it could ruin my career. Maybe an anonymous test or something."
His mind was in a whirl as he tried to figure out what to do. There were so many questions and at the moment so few answers. He had to be a mutant. There was no other way he could have abilities like this, was there?
‘’PLEASE HELP ME I’M BEING MUREDERED.’’ A female voice screamed out in obvious pain from just a little ways up the path.
Jacen's reaction was instentaneous and completely automatic. As his eyes narrowed he suddenly became the warrior and hunter he was trained to be. His stride lengthened as it changed fomr a normal jog all the way into a full out run. Someone needed his help. Questions could be forgotten and laid by the wayside because now was a time for action! As he rounded a corner in the trail he took in the situation in a glance. A woman, dressed in the Goth style, stood screaming in pain with a knife through her hand. Nearby stood a man, that looked scared and nervous. Maybe he had expected his victim to die in the first strike and the scream unerved him. It didn't really matter.
Speach was useless and the kind of banter you saw on TV only proved that the fights weren't real. In real combat almost noone would speak as they simply focused on taking out the mission.
"No... no... look man, you don't understand!" The boy gasped out as Jacen closed. His begging fell on deaf ears as the man's combat training took over. A blow to the boy's stomach knocked the breath out of him and folded him over. A knee brought up to the face straightened him back up just in time for a left hook to connect violently to his temple. Without another sound the younger man collapsed to the ground in a heap.
Turning back around quickly, Jacen walked toward where the young woman stood. "Let me get you to the hospital, ma'am. You need medical attention." He said crisply as his eyes focused on her wound. A knife through the hand was deffinately beyond his skills as a medic.
During the day Central Park was one of the main hubs of New York City. People were continually walking back and forth, setting up some sort of display on one of the vast expanses of grass, or just having a picnic lunch out in the sunshine. It was a place of nature in the center of vast buildings, streets, and man made structrues. A place of solace and peace for those that sought time away from the business of city life.
At night though, it changed. What were friendly paths for walking or running during the day turned into shadowy aisles that just invited danger. At night there was no telling what kind of creeps you might come face to face with just around the next corner. For most people, it was crazy to suggest going into the center of the park at night, much less to be exercising alone, but thankfully Jacen King wasn't most people. He was a former Army Ranger and current New York City S.W.A.T. team member that was trained to handle any situation that was thrown at him. That, combined with the fact that he was trying to sort out personal issues made Central Park the perfect place to go for a late night run.

Jacen's breathing was slightly quicker than usual but his pace was steady as he jogged down the darkened path. Dressed in white athletic sneakers, white socks, light gray sweat pants, and a light gray hoodie sweat shirt he looked like your typical every day jogger. A small pack was clipped around his waist holding keys, ID, a cell phone, and two five dollar bills and ten ones dollar bills.
"I'm a mutant." The man's mind was working in a cadence that seemed to match the sound of his feet hitting the ground and then pushing off again as he took his next step, "I cancel out other mutant powers. How the hell did that happen?"
Whenever he was moody or simply trying to work out a hard problem, Jacen always pushed himself athletically. The sweat and hard work always seemed to help sort things out in his mind.
"Am I really a mutant though? I've stopped a few mutant's powers but can I be sure it's universal?" The man tried to argue with himself even as his mind went back to what had happened at the club several nights before, "Maybe it was just a fluke. Not likely, but possible."
It had taken a while for the full shock of what this could imply really settled in. On the one hand this ability of his had opened up doors to a very nice fling with a very pretty blond. On the other hand it also meant that he now had a part of his life that he had to keep hidden from the rest of the department. It wasn't that he typically shared all of his secrets with the other officers but this now was a thread to his career. If any of them ever found out that he was a mutant then they would refused to work with them. His career would be over.
"How can I be sure? And if I'm not a mutant, then what am I?"
Jacen was doing his level best to ignore the two... crazy people that were in his back seat. Thus far Slate had proved himself to be rather intelligent conversation but the other two were starting to get on his nerves just a little. Well maybe a lot, but he could still do his level best to ignore them. After all, who in their right mind would dain to be dragged into a conversation about road kill?!
"He was a good guy." Jacen replied to Slate's observation, "He stayed quiet and kept to himself for the most part but he was still a good man. A good medic and Ranger."
His comment about being in the police force seemed to bring out less of a reaction. Jacen knew he really shouldn't be surprised. So many of his fellow squad mates had made their opinion of mutants quite clear on multiple occasions which meant that even the mutants that weren't dangerous were rather cautious around anyone from the police department.
"Thank you again for helping us." Slate spoke again after several moments of silence. Maybe Jacen's comment about being a police officer had shaken Slate even more than he realized. Was that just because of the standard nervousness or was there something more sinister behind his current silence?
"So, do you attend the Mutant School," Jacen began casually, his eyes flicking up to the mirror to meet Slate's reflected gaze before returning to the road, "or do you do something else? Have you chosen your career yet?"
Lily had called and after setting up yet another meeting time, she had given Jacen the choice of picking a club for them to hang out at before doing anything else. It was quite obvious from their phone conversation that another shower was on her mind and Jacen was already looking forward to seeing where their evening might progress.
It had been rather strange, but Lily had asked for Jacen to pick her up at a particular street corner instead of a specific address. While wierd, Jacen already knew better than to think to long about the odd request. He and Lily had a... very different relationship and it was only natural that some things would seem strange.
After picking up the blond woman, Jacen drove to the destination he had picked. At the NYPD there had been a few reports filed about a certain mutant friendly bar called 'The Hole In The Wall'. While nothing had ever happened that had been bad enough to bring up charges, that had been several serious injuries and even a few mysterious deaths that had been investigated. The bouncers were supposed to be extremely rough characters but without enough evidence nothing had ever been done. Jacen figured this was an opportunity not only for him to enjoy a mutant friendly environment but also to gather intel on a possibly dangerous location. He wasn't actually interested in reporting any of the information he gained, but if S.W.A.T. were ever called to this particular club, it would give him an advantage.
"Here we are." Jacen spoke up as he pulled his truck into the correct parking area, "I hear this place is mutant friendly but I've never had a chance to check it out."
Climbing out of his truck, Jacen walked to the back of the vehicle and waited for Lily to join him before heading over to the club entrance. He was dressed casually in brown rockport lace up shoes, tan socks, pressed khakis, brown belt, a white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up above the elbows, and a brown leather jacket. Normally he would be wearing an undershirt with the dress shirt but since it was for a night out with Lily he had chosen to forgo the undershirt and instead leave an extra button undone to expose a little bit more of his muscular chest.
He had overslept... and he had overslept bad! Jacen awoke with a start just in tiem to look over and see that it was now 7:00 a.m. He was supposed to be at work at 8:00! In that split second Jacen's mind was suddenly shocked to complete wakefulness. Lily? Where was Lily? Had something happened? Springing from bed, Jacen swiftly moved through the house, accomplishing a thorough search in seconds. Everything was carefully cleaned up, straightened up, and put away right where it should be. Even his dirty clothes had been put in the hamper. It was almost as though she had never been there.
"That is a lady that doesn't like to overstay her welcome." Jacen said with a shake of his head as he once again checked the clock by his bed. 7:15... if he hurried he could shave, shower, grab his gear, and still make it to work on time. He'd have to breakfast on a stale bagle at the station but hey, it could be worse.
Walking into the bathroom Jacen flipped on the light and reached under the sink to pull out his shaving cream. Glancing up at his reflection out of habit, he looked back down at his shaving cream before his head snapped back up. It had taken a moment but it had finally clicked that something was out of place... there was frickin' writing on his head!
"U O ME A SHOWER" was written in big block letter across his forehead and for a moment Jacen could only stare in wonder before he began to laugh. Lily had left her calling card, letting him know that he would most likely be receiving a call from her down the road.
"You little minx." Jacen chuckled as he turned his focus back to shaving, "I hope I gave you a hickey last night!"
***
At aproximately 7:40 Jacen walked out of his front door and after quickly securing the deadbolt he jogged to his truck. He was dressed in his normal uniform with his bag of gear gripped firmly in his left hand. Lily was a pleasant memory but it was time to get back to business. Pleasure would have to be left on the shelf at home.
"Well just remember that mutants and humans can have offspring together. You won't find one place in nature where different species can intermingle." Jacen said with a firm nod, "And it sounds like you have pretty good teacher. Most are to quick to try and push their own opinion on the students but it sounds like you've got some good ones."
Turning back around to Claire, he suddenly realized that she had taken care of almost all the work of loading up the conveyor belt with groceries. From the look of things it was still all from their overloaded cart and his own groceries hadn't yet made it out of the cart.
"Can I at least assume you'll be able to get some of the students to help you unload all of this food when you get back to the school?" He asked with a smile toward the elder of the two women, "This seems like an awful lot for you two ladies to be lugging around by yourself."
Within the course of only a few more minutes both batches of groceries were paid for and the three were on their way out the door. Remaining the gentleman, Jacen graciously pushed the ladies cart to their vehicle, figuring he would take his own cart over to his truck after they were in a position to be loading.
Jacen's chest rumbled gently in a chuckle as he listened to the obvious weariness in Lily's voice. "Sleep well." He murmured as the woman's breathing evened out into obvious sleep.
For the next fifteen to twenty minutes Jacen just stared off at the ceiling as he listened to the blond woman sleep. How had he ended up like this? Sleeping with a woman he had just met was not something he normally did... in fact it was nothing he had ever done before. Sure he had been with women before but none this quick. What was different about Lily? What had drawn him to her?
"She's probably the first one I've ever met that brained me with a tennis racket." Jacen thought to himself in amusement as he finally let his eyes begin to close, "And she helped me realize I'm a mutant. That makes her different from just anyone out there."
A few hours later Jacen was once again stretched out on the bed with Lily's head and her blond hair pooled out over his chest. They had each had moments of being in charge since neither would give up control completely. It had kept things interesting with both of them fighting to take charge without being to forceful. The clothes lay scattered over both the living room and bedroom floors but neither of the individuals in the bed seemed to have a care in the world.
"I could get used to this." He murmured quietly with his eyes closed as one hand trailed up and down the curve of Lily's spine, "Next weekend is Valentine's day so..." Jacen's voice trailed off for a moment as he thought about his schedule, "would you be busy the weekend after? Maybe we could take in a club or just a shower."
For a man that hadn't been with a woman in a little while, this many times in such a short period was tiring but Jacen didn't care. It was a satisfied weariness that he knew he'd like to experience more often down the road. A part of him was growing attached to the young woman that now lay in bed with him, but not the kind of attachment that one felt for a life long partner. More the kind of attachment that someone would feal for a friend or kindred heart.
"If you're busy I understand... we can always aim for another time instead." Jacen offered giving Lily an out she could use in case she needed it.
This was not exactly how Jacen had expected Lily to respond but there was no reason to complain. If she felt up for a round three then he was going to do his best to make sure that when she left she was a very happy and very satisfied woman.
The kiss continued to heat up as one of Jacen's hands drifted away from her neck to slowy wrap around her waist and pull her just a little closer, even as his other hand continued to explore the delicate skin that was covered by fabric. A few moments later his hand finally withdrew from that particular area of skin, quickly moving to the front of her jeans. It was difficult to do from this position and with only one hand, but after a few clumsy tries the snap was undone and the zipper had been nudged downward to provide much easier access.
"You sure about this?" Jacen murmured a few moments later when he pulled back from the kiss and began to nibble at Lily's neck. Maybe she'd get away without any marks but then again, hickies were always in style. "We might get dirty... we might need another shower."
Jacen wasn't going to complain about anything. He was ready to move in whichever direction she wanted and if he was completely honest with himself he would admit that if she did choose to leave right now, he'd have to go take a nice, long, cold shower.
