The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

As she shoved the card into the waistband of her jeans and then stood, stretching, Jacen caught himself thinking about the skin that his card was currently touching. It hadn't been that long ago that it had been his own skin touching those same areas and he had to admit that it was tempting to move in that direction all over again.
As she walked off to the bedroom Jacen popped the last eggroll into his mouth and chewed it thoughtfully. Who would have thought a tennis match would turn into this? Who would have thought a tennis match could bring about things that would reveal so much about himself. He had done his duty and the right thing for so long... maybe, just maybe, he could start to be a little selfish.
Lily walked back into the living room wordlessly. Jacen too remained silent as she tossed her bag over by the door and then walked over to take a position straddling him on the couch. As she buried her face in his neck Jacen lifted his hands, stroking through the woman's blond hair for a moment. Her scent was intoxicating and if he were honest with himself, Jacen wanted to give her a reason to need yet another shower.
Moving his hand around to cup her face, Jacen gently pulled Lily away from his throat before looking into her eyes. There was no emotion of love or anything touchy feely in his eyes just pure, hot, need. It was the work of a moment for his hand to move around to the back of her neck, bringing her forward once more into a passionate kiss. Expression in words was uncessary as he broadcast everything through this one simple touch. Moving his other hand up, Jacen slipped it under her shirt, running it over the smooth skin of her back before dipping down to trail over the skin that was hidden beneath the waistband of her pants.
"Call me," He said a moment later in a husky voice as he pulled back from the kiss, "next time you need a shower."
It was good to see that Lily was willing to accept defeat and so Jacen so no reason to push the subejct any further. They had a good thing going and he wasn't going to mess this up by pushing her to far or to hard.
"Sounds fair enough. Any day preferable for you? Because I would hate to clear an opening in my busy schedule and then not fit into yours."
This was one of the few times that Jacen really appreciated his work schedule. Much like a fire fighters, he would work heavy hours for two or three days and then have a full day off. Unlike a fire fighter, his schedule was always the same each week.
"I'm available all day on both Sunday and Wednesday and I'm available anytime after 7:00 on Tuesdays and Saturdays." He replied without the slightest hesitation before popping the last of this particular egg roll into his mouth and chewing quickly. As he watched Lily slurping up the last of her soggy noodles, Jacen was already reaching for a few napkins. He hadn't yet met a person that could eat lo mein without getting messy and even though he would have liked to clean her up a different way, he thought that might be a little to forward at the moment.
"Here." He said as he held out the napkins. After she had taken them he popped his second eggroll into his mouth, whole this time, and continued chewing as he stood up and walked into the kitchen. A few moments later he returned with note card that had his first name and phone number on it.
"It's my cell so, unless I'm extremely busy, you'll get right through to me." He said as he sat back down and offered her the card. Glancing down he saw that there was only one last egg roll remaining so he grabbed the container and offered it to Lily, "Egg roll?"
Could Jacen speak chinese? Not a chance in the world. Could he read chinese? No way. Could he eat chinese food? Most certainly! Gripping the chopsticks firmly in his hand, he moved them expertly, picking up a piece of chicken and popping it into his mouth with minimal effort. Chewing his piece of chicken, he did his best not to laugh as he watched Lily struggle with her chopsticks. Reaching over in the paper sack he dug around to the bottom before pulling out a piece of rubber aproximately an inch long with a hole in either end.
"Need a cheater for those things?" He asked with as innocent an expression as he could muster while holding out the particular item.
After Lily had chosen either yes or no, Jacen leaned back against the cushions of the couch and returned to eating. Using his chopsticks to scoop up the rice he continued eating in silence for the next few minutes, alternated back and forth between chicken, fried rice, and vegetables.
"Tell you what," Jacen finally spoke as he plucked out one of the egg rolls and held it poised to be eaten next, "how about I give you my phone number and you can call when there's an opening in your busy schedule."
If she wanted to keep things impersonal then he didn't know how to make it any more impersonal. This would give her the option to be the one to make contact in the future or to not make contact. If she wanted another... shower, then it would be her choice. Unless she offered his number he wasn't going to ask for it. Taking a quick bite off the end of his egg roll he chewed slowly as he just watched Lily to see what her reaction would be.
Hiding a slight smile Jacen lifted the glass to his lips and downed half the brandy in a quick swallow. He rarely did it but every now and then it was nice to feel that burning sensation as a large quanity of alcohol moved down his throat. If she wanted this to continued he saw no reason to argue.
"I think we can work out some sort of arrangement. After all, everyone needs a way to let off the pressure, so to speak."
This wasn't the way Jacen usually acted, in fact, this was like nothing he had ever done but he was starting to like this new side to his personality that he'd never found. For to long all he'd done was follow orders and put himself in harms way. Maybe, just maybe, it was his turn to enjoy life a little.
Before anything else could be said, a knock sounded at the door. "The restaurant's not far from here and their delivery guy is always pretty quick." Jacen spoke up as he set his drink down on the coffee table and then made his way over to the front door. Opening it he smiled at the young oriental man that was standing there.
"Here's your food Mr. King. Nice to see you have company." The young man said with a nod and a smile as he handed over a bag of food. Leaning over Jacen opened a drawer in his alcohol table and pulled out a twenty and a ten which he handed over to the young man.
"Keep the change Johnny. Thanks for the quick service."
"Have a nice night!" The young man responded before Jacen closed the door and walked back over to the couch.
"Can you handle the chopsticks," Jacen asked with a teasing and yet challenging glint in his eye, "Or do I need to get you a fork?"
Jacend wandered over to his liqour table and poured two more glasses even as one of his eyebrows lifted inquisitively. The one for himself he filled with brandy and the other he filled with whiskey. She had dodged the question. It had been done artfully but it was still quite obvious that it was dodging.
"Nothing personal... fine and dandy." Jacen thought to himself as he turned back around, a slight smile on his face, "We'll keep this impersonal."
"You know your way around a tennis court pretty well." He said, smoothly changing the subject back to more comfortable ground as he carried the drinks over and took a seat at the other end of the couch while he offered her the strong alcohol, "I'm decent myself but I always played more football or basketball during my military days."
These were little trivial facts that, while providing some information, all kept them both away from the more personal subject that she so obviously disliked. "Do you know your way around the dance floor as well as you do the tennis court?"
The very thought of going dancing, partying, or out for drinks with Lily was enticing. Neither of them were looking for any type of steady relationship but it would be nice to have someone to just go out and have fun with... someone to burn off energy with.
When the blond beauty rolled over to snuggle up against Jacen's bare skin, he slipped an arm around her to give her a quick squeeze. He wasn't being clingy and there would be no effort to hold on to her whenever she decided she needed to slip away.
"You know what I like about you?" Lily asked softly as he nibbled at his shoulder before pressing her lips into a kiss against his skin, "You are more than you seem."
Smiling slightly, Jacen was quiet for a few moments as he watched the young woman kiss her way down his arm and then roll away to climb out of bed. She was quite a sight to watch strolling away. Jacen had noticed how attractive she was from the rear even when she was clothed in her tennis outfit and now to see the same view without any clothing... well it made it even more obvious just how sexy she was.
"I could say the same thing about you." Jacen spoke up with a slight grin as he watched the electricity dance through her damp hair as soon as the young woman stepped out of his aura, "How many people would expect that such a pretty package could contain such a powerful force. I'd be willing to bet most people underestimate you."
Lily made her way back out of the bathroom and then set about getting dressed. Soon she was covered but there was one thing that Jacen noticed that was rather enticing. She was wearing nothing underneath the jeans or camisole. That meant that only a snap and a zipper separated Jacen from...
"Chinese?" Lily spoke up, her voice breaking through Jacen's thought as she gave him the most innocent and cute expression she could manage.
"Chinese is good." Jacen replied with a chuckle as he leaned over to pluck the cordless phone out of its cradle on the table beside his bed, "I know just the place. You have a favorite dish?"
***
A few minutes later, after ordering honey chicken, fried rice, mixed vegetables, and a couple of egg rolls for himself, along with whatever dish Lily thought sounded good to be delivered as soon as possible, Jacen placed the phone back in its cradle. Swinging around rather reluctantly, the man stood and walked over to his dresser, pulling out a pair of gray sweat pants and a forest green shirt with 'Army' printed across both the front and back in black block letters. If she was going to go commando then it was only fair he did the same... maybe she'd be thinking about things other than food the same way he was.
"So, I know that you went to college but what do you do now?" Jacen asked as he turned back around and led the way for the two to walk back into the living room, "Other than brain tennis players so that you can seduce them, of course."
He was teasing and digging all at the same time... mentally Jacen knew he hadn't shared his profession with Lily either. She knew he was military but he had never mentioned that he was actually NYPD. Of course, she may have figured that out from the radio in his car but there was no telling really. Jacen had apprehended plenty of perps that had the exact same kind of radio installed in their vehicles so she might think he was just a police enthusiast... or a criminal.
Jacen lay stretched out on the bed, propped up by two of the pillows that he had piled on top of each other to give them a little more height. If he had been a smoker than now would have been the perfect time to light up a cigarette. He hadn't felt this... satisfied in quite a while.
"I have to admit... when I met you at the tennis tournament I never expected things to end up like this." The man said, his voice slightly amused as he looked over, enjoying the sight of Lily's body... both the skin that was uncovered and the silhouette that was hidden by the damp sheets. She was a beautiful woman, and although she seemed to be a touch more wild than the woman he was normally attracted to, she had many redeeming quality.
"I wonder how many more... qualities I can discover." Jacen idly wondered to himself as he lifted his right arm up, crooking it back on the pillows so that his head would now rest on his arm, "We'll just have to see."
"Care for something to eat?" He asked after a few moments of just enjoying the comfortable silence, "I make decent spaghetti or I can order take out if you're hungry." It wasn't an offer to try and deepen the relationship or anything silly like that... truth be told it was simply an offer to rebuild their energy just in case there might be a repeat performance later that same evening.
"I wonder if she'll stay over... should I ask her?" He pondered as he waited for Lily's opinion about the food, "Or should I just wait to see where things lead? Waiting is probably the best idea."
If he were being completely honest... Jacen wasn't really expecting Lily to say yes to his helping wahs her back. Heck... he hadn't even been expecting her to be comfortable with his being in the bathroom with her and it had been shocking when that was OK.
If people would have considered him to be surprised by both of those responses, then he had to be absolutely in shock by what the young woman did next. It was a burst of excitement that he had obviously never seen Lily exibit before. Suddenly she was jumping around, pulling off the small tennis outfit to reveal the small undergarments that were hidden underneath. And then, as Jacen's eyes widened slightly and his neck flushed, even those undergarments dissapeared.
The man would have been frozen in place except for the fact that she now had her arms around his neck and with a kiss on his cheek was pulling him back toward the water.
"At least I already took off my shoes and socks..." Jacen thought in surprise moments before his body was drenched by shower head.
"Apparently you must like having someone to wash those hard to reach places." He said quietly as he peeled off his now wet t-shirt and tossed it out to the shower floor, not really caring that it was slowly beginning to make a puddle. Leaning down Jacen captured the blond woman's lips with his own, kissing her with all the pent up emotion that had built throughout the day. Frustration... surprise... anger... lust... they all combined into a searing kiss that made the room steam up all the more quickly.
"Maybe... we should focus on getting you cleaned up first... once anything else starts we might not get everything cleaned up." Jacen whispered as he pulled back from the kiss.
Reaching over to the various shampoos and soaps that Lily had grabbed he selected a packet of shampoo and opened it before beginning to lather it into the woman's hair. "You enjoy the water... let me do this." He ordered quietly as his hand moved back and forth through her hair, washing out the sweat and grime from the day. Jacen had learned long before that touching or washing a woman's hair is one of the most intimate gestures. It seemed to fit with this situation and besides... washing her gave him a chance to explore.
***
Time passed, the steam cloud thickened, and the heat grew. The washing part of the shower had ended a while before but noone had yet exited the shower. Moans and whimpers could be heard and then something appeared through the steam... a pair of shorts and boxers falling to the floor to join the t-shirt as the puddle slowly grew.
Ok... now it was starting to sound as though Lily didn't think of... being physical... as anything special. Jacen had been involved in quick flings that were purely about satisfaction with no strings attached and if Lily was offering well... as a red blooded man he would just have to accept.
Tipping his glass up Jacen drained the last of his alcohol, his mind made up completely. "Well then... if you're comfortable with it, I've got no problems. And I like long showers myself so there's an extra large hot water tank here. Take all the time you need."
Quickly slipping out of his shoes and socks he left them by his racket bag and quietly padded after the young woman as she made her way to check out the bathroom. It was essentially a very neutral looking room. The walls were a soft doe skin tan/brown with white towels hanging on their apropriate towel rods. The floor was tiled in a dark, chocolate brown linolium tile that was still in good condition. Hanging over the toilet was the only picture in the room... a painting of a large Alaskan mountain in the back ground with trees, a beautiful stream, and a deer drinking from the stream in the foreground.
For Lily however, the most important item in this small room must have been the bath tub. The bathtub itself was slightly larger than average, meaning that two people could actually sit or stand in it without being uncomfortable. Because of the plumbining in the walls made it so that the shower head was actually at the opposite end of the room from the door. While it might still be within Jacen's range if he were standing outside, it would most assuredly be at the maximum distance.
"I've got some sample bottled of soaps and shampoos stored underneath the sink so you can grab whatever you need." Jacen said with a slight grin as he leaned up against the bathroom doorway. Now that he was getting to understand the situation a little better and be a little more comfortable with the whole thing he felt that a few half teasing half serious comments might work to keep the atmosphere relaxed, "Need someone to wash your back?"
"Dang. Did a blueberry blow up in here or is this your favorite color?" Lily asked as soon as the door to the room opened.
"Blue is calming. It's a good color to relax with after a stressful day at work... and yeah, it's my favorite color." Jacen replied without the slightest embaressment.
"Guest bath? What kind of single guy has a guest bathroom?" Lily asked in obvious surprise as he dropped her racket and walked over to take a look at his collection of alcohol.
'Um... one that likes having friends over. What... you never met a single guy that likes to have people stay over?" Jacen replied as he lifted the glass of scotch he had just poured himself and took a sip, "And people talk about my being sheltered."
"I can't... I mean - can you come with me? I can't..." Lily began before downing her whole drink as though trying to build up her courage. "I kind of need you to stand by otherwise you're gonna get unwanted fireworks."
Blinking slowly Jacen took another sip of his drink as his mind began reeling, trying to understand what Lily was saying. She needed him around in order to shower... so water must affect her electrical power. Was she just wanting him to hang out outside the door, or sit in the bathroom while she was in the shower, or did she actually want him to be in the shower with her? Was she asking just because she needed his power to cut off her power or was she asking because she wanted something physical to happen?
"I uh... am not sure if that's a great idea." Jacen admitted somewhat uncomfortably as he stared down at his drink instead of looking at the young woman, "It's... yeah... been a little while since I... well was with anyone and having me in the same room as you when you're ah... uh... I can't guarantee I would be a gentleman."
That had come out wrong... really wrong... he wasn't a pervert or anything but any man would have trouble resisting temptation if the only thing separating them from an attractive blonde was a thin shower curtain. "Is my range enough that I could be outside the bathroom door?" Jacen offered quickly. He didn't want to come across as a perv but Lily deserved to know what the situation might be.
"All of the above, I guess. Military isn't too keen on rule breakers or so I hear. Not too keen on our kind either."
"As far as I know the military doesn't have any policies reguarding mutants." Jacen replied somewhat dryly, "And one of my best friends over in Iraq was a mutant. He saved my life after I'd gotten shot. He was a good guy."
"Oh, I dunno - you've known you're a mutie for how long and you're already dodging the cops?"
Inwardly Jacen winced and he just knew that his expression had to reflect some of that. He was a cop and yet here was was fleeing from his fellow officers because he didn't want to have to answer any questions right now. Maye Lily was right... maybe he wasn't following his own statement and embrassing who he was. Maybe... maybe he was just trying to run away. To forget everything all his problems and just get away for a while.
***
"I would love to come in. My place actually... uh - it recently burned down. I've been staying in a mutant home of sorts so I'd appreciate at least a real shower... if you don't mind."
"Follow me then." Jacen said with a nod and a slight smile as he turned and led the way to the elevator. A few moments later the two of them exited the elevator on the third floor and made their way down the hall to the corner apartment. Turning the key, Jacen unlocked the deadbolt and walked inside, holding the door open for Lily to come in before closing it behind her.
The door opened up directly into a small living room. The floor was carpetted with a deep, royal blue carpet that blended with the light sky blue walls. Various pictures and small pieces of artword were hung on the wall though it was obvious that none of it was very expensive. In the far corner was a TV, DVD player, and collection of various movies and tv show seasons. A black leather couch and one dark blue fabric easy chair sat facing the tv, with a cedar coffee table set up right in front of them. A doorway right next to the TV opened up into what must have been the master bedroom. Off to the left was a small kitchen that looked like it would be a tight fit for even two people to get in. A short hallway next to the kitchen ran off to the guest bedroom as well as the guest bathroom.
Over all the apartment was clean and relatively well maintained. It was the typical, comfortable home that most any middle-class american would live in. The only oddity was a table that sat right next to the front door. Three or four different bottles of various alcohol were set there along with glasses for serving. It was apparent that these were probably one of the few things Jacen splurged on because this wasn't your normal beer and wine.
"The guest bath is just down the hall and towels are under the sink if you want to shower first." Jacen offered as he dropped his tennis bag on the floor next to his liqour counter, "Or I can pour you a drink first. I've got scotch, brandy, whiskey, or there is water, cranberry juice, and soda's in the fridge."
Jacen wasn't that used to hosting women at his apartment unless he was trying to sleep with them though he wasn't completely sure how to act around Lily. She was here for a shower and maybe even to help him accept his new found abilities, but as far as he knew there was nothing else that they wanted or needed from each other.
"I am a healer, technically, but my brother can shift both of our forms to bird."
"Healing's a nice power to have. We had a healer with our squad back in Iraq. He saved my life once... saved a few of the other guys in the unit too." Jacen reflected out loud as he remembered the feeling of almost dieing in a pool of his own blood, "The power must not have worked on himself though. He died from a sniper's bullet."
"May I inquire as to your profession, Sir?"
"NYPD." There wasn't the slightest hint of hesitation in his voice but there was a noticable amount of pride, "I've been with them almost two years now. Joined up not longer after I left the army."
There had been relatively little time between his being in the military and joining the NYPD but that was just because Jacen liked to be active. He enjoyed the danger of facing down the criminals in situations that not just anyone could handle.
"I discovered that the civilian life just wasn't my cup of tea." Jacen said with a slight chuckle, "I prefer being in on the action."
"I'm afraid I missed out on the whole college experience." Jacen offered with a slight chuckle as he smoothly turned onto a side street, avoiding the cops as he continued to listen to their chatter. "Unless you're a specialist the army doesn't really worry about college education." He didn't like having to do this but since he knew the meaning behind every code, it was actually easier than he expected it to be.
"If I were really going rogue the NYPD would have real problems." He thought to himself rather grimly.
"You do this often?"
"Do what? Flee from a crime scene, avoid the cops, or pick up pretty girls?" Jacen asked without the slightest hesitation as he turned back onto another main road and continued the drive to his apartment. "Where did that come from?" He asked himself in surprise, "That's not... I'm not... how..."
""You should probably wish we'd never met. I'm not sure what common reactions are beyond denial."
"You can never deny who and what you really are." Jacen said quietly after a moment, his expression turning thoughtful, "If you're human, then there's no use pretending to be a mutant. If you're a mutant, then embrace what you are and don't try to pretend your just a regular human. We are what we are and self-denial never helps anything."
***
A few moments later Jacen pulled the truck into his assigned parking space at the apartment building where he lived. It was a rather plain looking brownstone building. While not extravegant it was well maintained on the outside and the sidewalks and lobby were all quite clean.
"We're here... you going to come in or do you want me to call you a cab?" He wasn't about to assume anything with Lily. Even though she had accepted his offer to come over, there was something that still wasn't quite right about her. Maybe it the fact that she couldn't feel like herself without her powers, or something like that.
There were no daggers shot in Lily's direction as she stepped in to take charge of cleaning up his eye and putting on the butterfly bandage. There was surprise and maybe just a touch of gratefulness, but not a dagger to be seen. A few moments later the young woman had finished her work and Jacen was once again ready to drive.
Throwing the truck into reverse he backed the truck out of the parking space quickly but skillfully and then headed for the exit. Without even thinking about it Jacen reached down and flipped on his police scanner to see what the latest was. If the chatter was right then the cops were only another one to two minutes away but that was really all the time that he needed to slip away.
"So... what was your major in college?" He asked idly as he took the turn out onto the main road and began to accelerate away form the scene of their... incident.
"A cop fleeing the scene of an incident... what am I doing? It was an accident... we didn't do anything wrong. But why am I running away?" It was really to much for Jacen's mind to process. He had always been a law abiding citizen that fought for what he believed in and after one sudden discovery, Jacen was suddenly lost. Was he supposed to just be a regular law abiding citizen or was he supposed to be something more? He didn't believe he was an outright killer, but he knew that he could kill if necessary. So what did that make him?
"I don't know whether to thank you for being at the tournament today or just to wish we'd never met." Jacen spoke up out of the blue, "Is that a common reaction?"
Jacen had to steal himself not to react as the shock of her words hit him like a slap in the face. Hadn't he just gone through a mental battle proving that he was no saint? He may have a few saint-like qualities but he also had a few jerk-like and player-like qualities, which meant that he wasn't a saint. But if he wasn't a jerk, saint, or player, then what was he?
"Human, or... not... so... human." He mentally decided, accepting the inevitable. There was no clear-cut, concise answer in this situation.
"Lead on."
Pausing for a moment to brush away the last few glass shards that were sticking to his sweaty skin, Jacen began to walk across the parking lot to where his truck was parked. "Right this way." He assumed that Lily would now be following him but he refused to turn around and look. If she chose not to come it was no skin off his nose... he didn't need anyone. He could deal with this whole mutant discovery thing all by himself.
"Still there... good." Jacen's mind betrayed him as he caught sight of Lily in the reflection off a car's side view mirror out of the corner of his eye. Ok... so maybe he wasn't quite ready to deal with all of this on his own, but he would be soon. Yes... he would be soon.
A few moments later Jacen was unlocking the truck with the wireless clicker had had pulled from his bag. After stowing his bag in the back seat he wiped his face once more with the towel and then pulled out the first aid kit. Climbing into the front seat Jacen adjusted the mirror so that he could see himself and the small cut just above his eye.
"Butterfly bandage... gonna need a butterfly bandage." Jacen thought as he rummaged through the kit and finally found the appropriate item.
"How long have you known you were a mutant?" Jacen tried to keep the conversation at least somewhat light as he tried to get his wound closed. With the blood still running he had to keep one eye closed and that was making it somewhat difficult to deal with.
"I don't need help though... I can handle this." Jacen thought as he first butterfly got blood on the adhesive and he had to set it in his lap while he dug out another one, "No biggie... I can do this."
