The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Luke stood quietly as he simply enjoyed the night air. There was something special about being out at night when most of the world was tired or asleep... there was something different and just more wonderful about the world while it was shrouded in darkness. It was true that Luke enjoyed the sunshine but the shadows were his home and had been for some time.
From off in the distance Luke suddenly felt an approaching figure. "I'd wager a guess this must be Neena." He thought to himself as the figure continued to move closer.
As Calley and Neena began to speak, the blind man remained in the background simply listening. Amping up the power of his sonar he looked over the woman that had arrived. A nice figure and from what he could make out, nice facial features. This was one of the times he would have liked having true vision but unfortunately that was not to be. Sighing inwardly Luke brought the power of his sonar back down so that, while he could still 'see' the two figures conversing there was no way he could see actual facial features.
"Calley's unloading on awful lot on her... of course I don't know most of this either but I'm sure it must be a shock to be hearing this kind of information from someone you thought you knew." He thought to himself as he began to quietly hum the main muscal score from 'Phantom Of The Opera'. The feeling of rain was beginning to get a little more oppressive but Luke was still sure that it must be at least another twenty to thirty minutes away. Craning his neck slightly he concentrated, listening as hard as he could but his enhanced hearing just wasn't powerful enough to detect the sound off in the distance. As he gave up on such a wild idea Luke turned his attention back to the conversation to find Calley finally trailing off into silence. For a moment the blind man was tempted to speak but decided that for the moment he had better just let Neena and Calley deal with the current situation before he joined in.

"Thank you for your kindness but I do need to be going. I'm expected at my office within the next hour." Luke said, his voice gaining at least a little bit of confidence as he took the young woman's arm although his eyes remained knitted together in concentration behind his glasses.
"And here I thought I had pretty good control of this." Luke thought to himself as his mind continued to desperately fight off the urge to just let the sonar fly out of him once more. It was a building pressure that kept fighting against his defenses, getting stronger and stronger wich each passing moment. He had no idea if Vega could protect herself from the sound but he knew that his tenuous grip had no way of lasting much longer.
"I appreciate your suggestions... Kaz. I'll have to include that in my training for the future." Luke said with a nod to the other man.
He knew that most sonar devices didn't put out continual waves of sound... instead they used short 'pings' at predeterminted intervals. If he could learn that kind of control as well as some kind of directional control it would be yet another step to mastering the ability. Up until that moment he had thought that he had almost perfect control but now, as he strained to keep his ability turned off for the moment, it was quite obvious that this was not the case.
"I hope the rest of your project goes well and perhapse I'll meet you both again some time. My name is Luke... Luke Jacobs." He said, a touch of strain appearing in his voice as he continued to fight his own ability.
The pressure in his mind was slowly increasing, beginning to be a pain right in his temple. He remember feeling something like this back when the power had first started and he had tried to sleep while still sensing everything around him. Sensory overload had been the apparent cause back then but perhapse it was more than that. Maybe the first time it had been like a muscle he had never used before and now it was a muscle he had never used in this way before. The sound of blood rushing in his own ears, accompanies by his own heartbeat was becoming overwhelming.
"I really need to check out Vega... before this all starts again." He finally admitted, the strain becoming even more apparent in his voice. This was something he had never even attempted before and while it might become easier down the road, now was not yet that time.

Luke raised an eyebrow in surprise as Tris apparently came close to her snapping or breaking point for some reason. "Surprised by the turn of events? No... once I found out about Victoria's first incident this morning it wasn't really a big surprise to me that it happened again." The man's voice was soft but firm. Reaching over he took another sip of his iced tea before setting the glass down and replying to Tris' last statement/accusation.
"As to hanging out with mutant types... I've never really done much of it. While's it's true that I'm a mutant myself I've always blended in with society so well that I have never really had to hide or run from humanity as a general rule. I mean, who in their right mind would be afraid of a blind man?"
Reaching out with his sonar, Luke made sure that the waiter wasn't headed their way at that exact moment. Assured that it was safe he proceeded to reveal the secret of his abilities.
"And I know you've been wondering so yes... I am completely blind, at least visually." Reaching up, Luke took off his sunglasses and then folded them, sliding them into the breast pocket of his shirt. Looking out at the two girls, completely unseeing were the two orbs that had a color bridging between white and blue. The cloudiness of the eyes made it difficult to determine the exact color but there was at least a little bit of a blue tint to them. "My mutation took my vision when I was born but it replaced it with a sonar sense that manifested itself when I was about sixteen. On the upside I can sense things all around me... not just in front of them. The down side... I can't tell the difference between faces unless I'm extremely close and I can never appreciate anything flat... like art."
It was quite obvious from his voice that Luke was not looking for pitty and he didn't feel sorry for himself he was telling it like it was.

For a blind man to be touched unexpectedly is surprising enough... for Luke, who was used to sensing people approach it was almost a heart attack worthy moment as Kaz layed a hand firmly on his shoulder.
"What did you do just now?"
For a moment the shock almost made him lose his tenuous control of the on/off switch in his mind but fighting off the racing heartbeat Luke held onto it with all his strength.
"Don't sneak up on me or I might not be able to keep holding in." Luke said quietly through gritted teeth. Behind his sunglasses his eyes remained closed in concentration, simply doing his best to not afflict anyone nearby.
"Peace, Kaz... The molecular vibrations have stopped. Do you have to accost him now? Speak freely, but do not wander. I am sorry, Sir, for acting strangely. Your gift... I thought it just might make me go crazy. I am an air elemental, Sir... Kaz. I feel every molecule especially when they a go a twitter with sound... even if I cannot hear the sound."
So that was why the girl had been so nervous around him. If she could truly feel every molecule then it must have been hard for her to understand and handle even when Luke had his reigned in tightly. The... air-elemental had done something around them. Without warning the sound from the street outside as well as sound from within the bookstore was cutoff. Turning his head slightly Luke listened intently but other than the heartbeats coming from the two people standing next to him there was nothing.
"I'm blind but I've been gifted with a type of sonar sense that allows me to see the world around me though I'm sure it's quite different than how either of you se it." Luke spoke softly in response to the girls politness, "The sonar uses a frequency that promotes uneasiness and most people simply shrug it off especially if there's enough ambient noise."
Turning his head towards where 'Vega' had been standing when she spoke, he nodded his head forward in a slight bow, "I'm sorry my gift afflicted you in such a way. I'm afraid I didn't know that air-elementals even existed. But... if one of you can show me to the counter I'll be more than hapy to make my purchases and leave you alone."
It was amazing to think that his sonar could hurt someone... while it was useful knowledge if he ever had to combat someone that was an air-elemental Luke knew that he would have to carefully consider the way he used his gift in the future. Perhapse it would be necessary for him to practice more with his sonar completely disabled. "And I always thought my gift was one of the safer ones that wouldn't really hurt anyone else." He murmurd quietly to himself in obvious surprise and disbelief.
The conversation between Luke and Calley had deffinately helped eat up the time that it took to arrive at their destination. Calley was filled with curiosity about Luke's abilities and so she shot off question after question with barely any pause between them.
"The Sanctuary? Seriously, you haven't heard of the Sanctuary? Gigantic homeless shelter, opened the November before last, lots of cops died at the Grand Opening? The Isabel Duskmoor v. the State of New York trial this summer? The big golden doors? You can't live in New York and miss the golden doors. Well, I guess maybe some people can. Ah, not to be rude, but--how blind are you? I mean, you're obviously not actually-need-your-cane blind. Can you basically see everything fine, just without your eyes, or does it work different? If you don't mind me asking. And what was with those ghost things I saw? Are you a sort of illusionist, or something? I'm kinda nosey--you don't have to answer that."
"I seem to remember hearing something about that trial and those cops dieing but I may have been over in Europe right then. We had several security system installations earlier this year... one in London and one in Paris so I might ahve been out of the country right then." Luke had replied, the slightest hint of a smile on his face, "As for my blindness... I'm completely blind with my eyes. I can't see color or flat pictures so I've never been big on television. My mutation is actually what robbed me of my sight, but at the same time it gave me a... sense... a kind of sonar to sense the world around me. When I'm angry, upset, or in a fight the frequency just happens to match the human eyes causing the ghosts or wraiths that you saw earlier."
Outside of the vehicle Luke could sense the landscape getting nice and more manicured. While he couldn't appreciate the beauty of marble or granite he could appreciate people that kept their lawns well mowed and their bushes well trimmed. Finally the vehicle pulled up to the gates and Calley fell silent, the car idleing for several moments.
"Umm... So, we'll probably have to talk to Miss Neena. She's kind of the Assistant Headmistress. She's cool. But, ah... I've probably got a few things I should maybe tell her. Some of them might not go over so well. I've... kind of been gone for a few days. I think I've missed her class about twice, not to mention my other ones, and I didn't tell anyone why. It kind of goes back to the whole 'drugs would be easier to fix thing' I mentioned earlier. She's usually pretty cool, but I'm probably going to blurt out a lot of stuff on her. So... if I get sent to my room or something, then... Thanks. For your help."
Luke turned his head towards Calley, nodding slightly in acceptance of what the younger man had said. "I'm glad we got our differences straightened out for the time being. Good luck."
Seeming to hurry out of the car, Calley was soon right in front of the intercom. "Hi. It's Calley. I've got two guests. One's kind of sick. The other's here to look around. Could we get the gates opened? Thanks."
Reaching out Luke gripped the handle on his door, tugging at it to get it to open... nothing. Thinking it might just be a little old he pulled a little harder... still nothing. "No way am I gonna get stuck in this thing." Luke thought to himself, pursing his lips in annoyance as he gripped the handle and yanked it will all his strength. There was an ominous creek from the handle as though it might snap but by some miracle it held and the door opened. With a silent sigh of relief Luke climbed out of the vehicle and leaned up against the car, his folding cane in its broken down form gripped firmly in his left hand.
The night was cool with a slight breeze... he could feel the slight pressure that indicated it might rain later but the clouds weren't quite ready to give up their cargo just yet. Somewhere in the distance an owl hooted followed quickly by the screech of bats. Someone had found their dinner for the night. "I wonder what this... Neena person is like. Should be an interesting first meeting." Luke thought to himself as he waited for someone to respond to Calley's page.

"The Sanctuary?" Luke wondered as he listned to Calley talk, "It looks like I have a lot of catching up to do."
"So, I'm a dog thief by night and a student by day. How about you, Mister Jacobs?"
"Let's stick with Luke. I only use my last name if I'm at the office. Well let's see... by night I'm a costumed avenger out to protect the good citizens of New York." The blind man spoke with a laugh, obviously making fun of himself at least a little, "By day I'm a minor shareholder and employee in Jacobs and Jacobs security. My family founded the company years ago but for the most part my uncle take care of the day to day operation. Back when the registration act was in affect I had to step out of the spotlight because my being a mutant kind of soured some people's opinion of the company."
Luke began to lean back into the cushion but eventually thought better of it, maintain a straight posture and somewhat uncomfortable posture. It had felt like there was a broken spring in the seat and he really didn't want to feel it jabbing in his back at every turn of the road.
"So if you heard about the Mansion while you were at the Sanctuary, what exactly is the Sanctuary?" Luke spoke again, doing his best to keep a conversation going so that hopefully the drive would pass by quickly. He didn't mind Calley's company but this vehicle left some comforts out... ok so maybe it left all of the comforts out but he could cut it some slack. It was Calley's first car after all.

Luke chuckled softly at the Calley's apparent amazement. That was pretty much the way everyone reacted when they saw how his abilities overcame his disability.
"Nice to meet you Calley. I'm Luke... Luke Jacobs." He replied in a friendly tone. Now that he was out of the Wraith costume most of his doubts and questions were gone. He was a nice guy that liked to help people but more than that there was no way he could pass up on an opportunity to see a mutant school.
Stretching slightly he heard his shoulder pop... probably from that crash into the wall earlier but at least there as no major damage. "I hope there wasn't to much damage to your collar bone earlier... I didn't hear any crunching so I figured it probably wasn't broken." Luke said as he tried to make conversation while the two made their way towards the junker they would be riding in, "And if you don't mind my asking, how did you ever find out about this mansion? Like I said before, I've never even really heard about it but of course I never really needed to hide away from society at all."

As soon as Calley had driven off with his... precious cargo Wraith walked over to where he had stashed his motorcycle.
"I can not believe I'm doing this... I just can't believe it." He muttered to himself as he once again mounted the mashine and kicked it back to life. "What am I thinking?" The ride was rather short and in just a few minutes he was pulling the motorcycle up to a small storage building that was owned by the same parent company that owned the motorcycle he was currently riding. Turning off the engine he walked the vehicle in and carefully closed the large storage door, locking it securely before he set about his transformation.
As soon as the hood and visor was off, he felt like Luke once again. There was no multiple personality disorder or anything but he did feel like there was a completely different persona being in street clothes compared to being in his costume. In under five minutes Luke was dressed in what was probably his most common clothing choice... nice jeans that fit just a little loosely so he could move easily, a button up shirt of some color... from the stitching on the label that his tailor always added he knew it must be a silver color. Carefully rolling his sleeves up to the elbow Luke then grabbed a pair of nice black sneakers and slipped them on. He had never been big on dressy shoes that didn't have traction since you never knew what kind of action you might need to take. After shrugging on a dark gray blazer and slipping on his sunglasses all that was left was grabbing his cane.
"Well, Mr. Jacobs... I believe it's time to go meet young Mr. Calley." Luke spoke, stretching his vocal chords again as he tested his voice to make sure it sounded like normal once more.
***
The walk to the park had been accomplished brisky and efficiently so that he arrived only about eight to ten minutes after Calley had. Slowing his steps Luke walked carefully, his cane slowly tapping back and forth in front of him as he walked through the park. More than likely cat-boy would be suspicious of the blind man but Luke was curious whether he could surprise the young man at least a little. As the distance to the fountain closed Luke made his way towards the young man, finally stopping next to the fountain as though simply listening to the water.
"Nice night for a walk but I think a drive would be better." Luke spoke, his voice smooth and normal instead of the rough gravel he had been using throughout the night, "Shouldn't be on our way so we don't arrive at the mansion to late?"

"So, ah, you've never heard of the Mansion before? I mean, it's The Mansion. Xavier's School."
"No... I'm afraid I've never heard of Xavier's school. I've heard of Charles Xavier of course. I remember him be interviewed at different times when I was younger but I don't really know anythinga bout him or his school."
"Nice to meet you, Wraith-in-Costume. I look forward to hearing the supreme secret of your out-of-hood moniker. That's the car, It's my first."
Without real eyes there was no way to see exactly what condition the car was in. From the smell it had a slight oil leak... gas leak... anti-freeze leak... and maybe even brake fluid leak. As Calley spoke again and tugged at the handle of the backdoor Wraith could hear just how old this vehicle really was. Almost rusted completely shut from the sound of it.
"It's a 1981. Which means it's actually older than me. By a lot. Isn't that cool?"
"First car is always exciting... at least that's what I hear." Wraith replied quietly, his voice evening out a little as he placed the dog on the seat in the back of the car. Outwardly he was trying to project calmness but inside his mind was racing. What in the world kind of impression would he make if he showed up at this school in his work clothes? If he was really going to go see this mansion it would be better if he were in his normal day to day clothes but that would deffinately necessitate telling Calley exactly who he was.
"Any chance you can make a slight detour on the way to the school?" Wraith asked as he stepped away from the door and turned to face Calley, "I'd like to change into my street clothes if it doesn't bother you."
"What in the world am I thinking? Am I really about to show this guy who I am out of uniform? It'll probably mark me as the stupidest hero ever but for some reason I just feel like I should. What would a mutant school be like? Something just makes me want to see it... although not literally." He thought to himself as he waited for the younger man to respond.

The kid had to be in shock... completely and total shock... and how would Wraith know that? Because he was experiencing almost the same thing. Why in the world had he picked up the dog and offered to help? What in the world was he thinking?!
"I, ah... umm... It's just down the block. You can... follow me, I guess. Umm... thank you? Err, why are you doing this? If that's not completely rude to ask. Answer optional, I guess. Umm... And my name is Calley. I guess."
"Completely selfish motives Calley... you've got me curious about a mansion and healer mutant." He was probably coming across a little more gruff than he needed but he was still a little frustrated with himself. What in the world was he thinking? Maybe it was time to get out of this costume... maybe that was all he needed. A change of look and hopefully a change of mentality. He liked to help people but this still felt wrong. I mean, even if the dog was sick it was still stealing.
"And maybe you've got me wondering about my own motives." He finally admitted, hopefully taking away from of the gruffness from his previous motives. "And, in costume I'm Wraith. I'll introduce myself out of costume when I'm actually out of costume."
This was so stupid... maybe he did need to go see a shrink after all. Were there psychiatrists that specialized in mutant patients? He'd have to check the phonebook and internet when he got home.

"Uh-huh, I'm likin' the costume, Mister Law Abider."
Total attitude... this deffinately needed to be one of the last times he worked around teenagers. How in the world did they expect to survive with that kind of attitude? "By being able to change into a large cat of course... how else?" Wraith thought to himself rather ironically.
"Uh-huh. Are you done reading into my actions, or should I give you a few minutes? Uh-huh, I... Err. I've got a car. I can sort of drive--I mean, it's not that hard. I'm not completely stupid, you know. I'm taking it back to the Mansion. There's a healer mutant there. I just... need to figure out how to get it to the car. I'm not completely stupid. And what are you going to do? Wait 'til I pick him up again, and trip me?
Wraith slowly shook his head... was he really considering helping cat-boy? "It's just because he mentioned a mansion and other mutants... I'm curious... that's it... everything... nothing else." He silently defending himself in his mind but he knew that wasn't all. The kid had managed to guilt trip him enough that combined with his curiosity, there was no way he could do anything but help.
Walking over to the dog Wraith crouched by it and began to gently stroke its neck and head... there was the slightest sound of a growl deep in its throat for several moments before it decided that the costumed man wasn't really a threat after all.
"How about you just show me where your car is." Wraith said quietly, doing his best to keep the voice emotionless as he lifted the dog in his arms and slowly stood up once more. The dog was heavy... yep... deffinately heavy. "Gotta increase my weight and reps over the next few weeks. This shouldn't be such a strain." He thought to himself as he felt the muscles in his back and arms working overtime.
"Can we get a move on here? This dog is a little heavy even for me." Wraith spoke, his head swiveling to focus on cat-boy once more. Seriously... couldn't this kid just accept help when it was offered?

"Umm, no. I kinda like the city how it is. What?" Cat-boy said accusingly. "Would you need a reason like that to save something? Com'on, Mister Morals. The dog's dying. Or does your brand of justice like to stick to sneak-attacking teenagers in hallways and trying to club their heads in after you've blinded them with weird ghostie after-images? 'Cause that's real mature."
Ok... so the kid had attitude... lots of attitude... in fact he was pretty obnoxious. But what else could you expect from a kid that could turn himself into a tiger? Wraith could just picture when his dad had gone to punish him for something. Yelling for the boy to come to him so he could use his belt and then this tiger suddenly bounds in... would have been kind of comical except for the fact that the dad probably had a heart attack or something.
"My... brand... of justic sticks to abiding by the law." Wraith replied cooly, clearly unflustered by his smart-ass remarks, "So I can't say I've much thought about breaking into someone's home in order to save a dog I've never met. So obviously you must break into homes all the time looking for sick animals or, you've seen this dog before and knew that it needed some kind of help."
Oh yeah... they were both crazy... certifiable in fact. Why in the world was he still standing here debating with cat-boy about the way life shoudl be lived? He had to make a choice here and frankly, he didn't like the way he was beginning to feel. Was he actually beginning to feel guilty? He was wasn't he... the little punk was beginning to guilt trip him and he was doing a good job at it.
"I can't believe I'm about to say this." Wraith muttered under his breath as he continued standing there with his arms crossed before raising his voice up to a normal speaking level, "So if you're so gonna save the dog where are you taking it and how're you gonna get it there?"

Extending his palms slightly, Wraith opened his hands to show that for the moment at least he was unarmed. It had been rather comical watching the boy jump at his voice but he had kept his laughter and amusement hidden inside... deep inside.
"Yuh-huh. You've got no idea. So what? Round three, now? 'Cause I warned you the first time: I'll growl at you. Potentially even, you know, claw you or something. And for the record, hating something is a pretty crappy reason to leave it to die. And anyone who lets their dog get this sick can go ahead and complain when they find a few teacups missing and a few lamps unplugged. I'm pretty sure it's called vigilante justice. Ever heard of it? And I'm not on drugs, thanks. My power just hates me. Thanks. Drugs would be a lot easier to fix."
This kid was out there... way out there. His idea of vigilante justice would deffinately be giving shrinks something to debate and write case studies about for months and maybe even years. "I can't say I'm really interested in round three... all your doing is taking an apparently sick dog that seems to have seen MUCH better days. You left the loot upstairs, although you did break the poor guys teacup." Wraith spoke, his voice leveling out slightly although the gravel could still be heard a little. It was tough forcing your vocal chords to do things like that when it wasn't natural... out of costume he had a very smooth and melodious voice but to keep things different he forced the roughness in while in costume. "I need a cup of hot tea when I get home... as big as I can get." He thought as he fought of the urge to reach up and massage his throat. This was probably the most he had talked as Wraith for quite some time.
Slowly standing upright Wraith just crossed his arms across his chest watching the boy for several moments. "So what makes the dog so important anyway... you one of those animals lovers that thinks all of the city should be open and wild like the plains of Africa?"
"I might need to go talk to a shrink myself... I can't remember ever hearing about a hero that would stand around chatting with the criminal." He thought to himself, "Shrink would probably say I sympathized or wanted to be like them... not what I need to here that's for sure." Ok... so maybe there were two case studies that could take years to examine both standing in the same room. Just the fact he wore a costume probably would have given most psychiatrists fits.
Maybe he should think about a career change... this hero stuff might not be quite what he was cut out for. I mean the kid was still stealing whether it was only the dog or every darn thing in the house but for some reason Wraith drew a difference between the two situation in his mind.

As Victoria popped back up and out Luke took the apron and folded it slightly, tossing it back over to the waiter he had procurred it from.
"Thank you, Luke. Again. You seem to be having to rescue me a lot today." Victoria spoke up in a rather pathetic and very sad voice.
"This is getting ridiculous- we have got to get you some training." Tris spoke up in a soft voice for just the two of them to hear as she picked herself up off of the floor.
"I'm glad that I've been able to help you Victoria but I have to agree with Tris... you need some kind of training and control in an environment where you don't keep getting startled like this." The blind man spoke softly as he slipped back into his seat. "And I'm going to assume that since you said something about it Tris, you either know how to train her or know someplace she can go."
There was no way Luke could even begin to offer anyone training of any type... he had good control of his powers but that didn't exactly take a whole lot, or at least he didn't think that it did. He'd been using the sonar since he was a boy but there was always the nagging question in his mind whether there was more to the power than he had never accessed. "I might even need training but that's not something I would admit out loud." He thought wryly to himself, "I have to be the confident experienced one."
