The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Nodding to her words he found himself thinking of other times he discussed philosophy. Trucks on long roads, middle of nowhere star gazing, coffee shops, and late night city stoops. He wondered briefly about all those people whose lives he passed in and out of and if those conversations stuck with them.
He grinned at her comment on out of the skull experiences. "Yeah, it's kind of like that."he agreed quietly, wondering if anybody was listening in. "I can only do it with them but..."he glanced down at his feathered companion with a warm smile, "through them I know what it's like to be outside of my body. It can change your whole frame of reference."
He tightened his grip on the above bar as the bus slowed to a stop to let them off. Following Shelby off the bus he stretched, Ace flapping his wings and moving to his backpack again. "Alright, where to now?"

You gotta be freakin' kidding me! Alex looked around the corner again, spying the girl who had now left the safety of shadows, making her one big walking, talking target. There was no way that guy was not going to shoot her. What to do, what to do?! There was no time to think! Leaving his own safe spot, he raced toward the girl all the while commanding Ace to attack the man's gun hand.
He grabbed her arm, to drag her back to the safety behind the dumpster. "Are you crazy?!"he shouted, eyes wide, heart pounding. There was a guy with a gun over there and if he shot down Ace he wasn't sure what he was going to do. Water tended to make material soggy and hard to use. But it looked like he was going to have to.
The dumpster had plenty and it was relatively dry with the lid over top it. He started working on a swarm, lice and wasps and other biting, stinging bugs. He would just need to stand to open the lid, which meant potentially being in the line of fire.

Food was on the way, just a little bit longer. He sat down, pulling his hood over his head. He heard the clerk shout so he didn't know if the guy was going to come out after the stolen food or not. He might have to run for it. Though, he didn't know if he had the energy to run. Blacking out was well on it's way and he knew just how not fun that could be. He didn't know what would get to him first, unconsciousness or food.
As his canine companion trotted up to him, he could feel his stomach clench in need. He didn't even bother to thank the dog, only snatch the bag away and cut the connection, letting the construct dissolve to dust. All this out in the open, there was no time to care who saw. He didn't care, all his focus was getting the food in.
Ripping open the bag, he tore into the small meal. It wasn't much, but at least it would be enough for him to survive for a little longer. But it wasn't enough to make any constructs. He would be alone for a while longer. He hated that, being alone for long stretches of time would be hard. His hate for it didn't matter though, it was just a fact.
Damn why were human design with such inefficient feeding mechanisms. The jerky was tough, hard to chew and swallow and it was taking too long. Why couldn't he just absorb the food like an amoeba or just swallow it whole like a fish. Pre-digestion felt like a waste of energy, like the movement of his jaw was sapping more energy from him than the food could give. This was the only food close to the bottom with sufficient nutrition by his estimate.
He was so wrapped up in his own thoughts and feeding he didn't see the person step out from the little store.

This was starting to get tricky. There wasn't nearly enough game around this city to sustain him for long and while he hated to resort to stealing, it was becoming a necessary evil. Squeezing his eyes shut before opening them he tried to clear his head. Passing out wouldn't do him any good. One last construct, one last chance to get some food in him. Then he didn't know what he would do. He may have to leave this place. It maybe be for the best, with winter on it's way and the temperature dropping further and further each night it wouldn't be safe to stay.
Winter sucked...But he was going to avoid heading for the desert again. Maybe Florida would be a good idea this time around? Maybe sneak into Disney and give himself a vacation, like the ones he would see on billboards and advertisements. A normal activity that people participated in. He missed those.
He missed school too.
He wondered how far behind he was. Maybe it wasn't so bad, he had been listening in on lessons after all. Sure it wasn't a really education but it was close, right? Right and nobody could fault him for running either. He didn't know what they would do if he was found out after all. He heard about the camps and while they became illegal, who knows what else would happen and...
He shook off the distracting thoughts. "This isn't good, I'm starting to drift..."he murmured mostly to himself and halfheartedly to the dog construct. It stared at him blankly, tail wagging slowly. It wasn't like Ace or Marry, or even Pick and Pocket. This one didn't really have a personality, mindlessly obeying commands. But the others either required too much or weren't what he was looking for. It was a bad sign when he couldn't even pull off his more familiar constructs.
He gave a grunt as he shoved himself off the alley wall and walked to the nearby convenience store. He didn't bother to really hide, only stand on the opposite side of the street and sent the dog on it's way. The animal paused at the door waiting for the clerk to be distracted by something else before sneaking in. Alex closed his eyes and directed it to the snack food aisle. Something high in calories, it didn't matter what just anything that could fill him.

He nodded at her question, "Yeah here and there." It wasn't his largest concern when studying it but he did happen upon it every once in a while. Usually where scientific journals posed ethical concerns or when he listened in to a class with a similar topic of discussion. It was an interesting thing at least.
Both of the ideas she brought up made sense to him in any case. "Yeah, I can actually agree with that. In a sense, given how I am."he said hinting toward his mutation. If he were to focus on Ace's mind right now, completely focus all of his brain would be in a way disjointed from his own and solely connected with Ace's. Every sight, smell, feeling, all of it would be come his own and his real senses would momentarily cease to exist in the transfer.
"But that last one, you'd still have touch, taste, smell, hearing among other senses to perceive the world even me. So all that data still exists. For something to stop existing you would have to complete cut off all your senses."he said thinking about it out loud before snorting as a thought occurred to him, "Actually the sense that you exist at all would have to be cut off too. But loosing that could possibly mean loosing sapience."

He smiled, happy to listen to her talk about classes. It was nice to at least hear about. He hadn't been to an official class since he was thirteen. After running away he had only ever caught a class or two with his bugs. All of his education was from books or the internet or just learning the hard way.
At the comment about P.E he chuckled. At the moment he was probably more physically fit than he ever had been when he was in school. "I doubt you want to hear me groaning about classes, though."
"No I actually really enjoy it. I don't exactly get a lot of normalcy. I kind of miss it." He shrugged, doubting he'd set foot in a class room again. Not with all the uncertainties as to his status. Right now he was a missing kid, probably written off as dead, but if he enrolled in some class or made himself publicly known...Well there was a chance that he'd be picked up by the police and taken back to square one. And he really didn't want that.

He gave a short laugh and shook his head, "Well that explains it. West of the Rockies." He tilted his head in consideration, honestly he hadn't heard much about Washington. Heard a lot about other places, California was home to the rich and famous, avoid Texas unless you want to get shot, and Florida was full of crazies and Disney World. Perhaps he should travel some more and see places further south and west. "I should try and see it sometime. You sound like you love it."
But for now New York was his temporary home. If he found any permanence here he'd be amazed. Glancing out the window he watched the scenery go by. No, he probably wouldn't stay. He would need to migrate south before it started getting colder. Snow was hell to travel through and even more hell to live in.
He internally shook off the thought. No need to worry about that now. Plenty of summer left to get through. Plenty of time before he had to leave. "So what other classes are you taking Shelby?"he asked, mostly to distract himself.

Alex corked a brow at her little story. "Where's back home by the way? I heard you mention it before. Doesn't sound like a place I've been."he said. If it was further west than the rocky mountains that might be why. Actually there were plenty of places he hadn't been now that he thought about it. Most of the southern US was still a mystery to him and he mostly avoided it to be honest.
But where ever Shelby was from must have been both interesting and horrible. Great for bird watching but horrible public transportation systems. How would a bus driver get away with that exactly? Sounded like a lawsuit waiting to happen. She was probably exaggerating for effect but you never really knew.

Alex contained his grin when the driver relented and let them stay. He didn't mind Shelby's hand tugging him toward the back, giving the loud, chatty woman a small wave as they passed. Grabbing the above bar with one hand and having Ace perch on the other, he shared in Shelby's relief and let himself smile. "Sorry about grabbing you like that. It was the only thing I could think of."he said quietly.
He hoped she didn't mind and that the art museum wouldn't stop him like the bus driver did. Though perhaps when they got close he could let Ace loose and have him fly around for a bit. A bit of mapping ahead could be helpful. In any case, this was one more thing he was going to pay Shelby back for. This woman was really doing a lot for him. Really going out of her way to be honest.
He had to wonder why, if there were ulterior motives. He expected behavior like this from older people, people who said that he reminds them of their children and grandchildren, he expected it from bible-thumpers and missionaries out to prove their religions worth, and so on. But Shelby didn't seem like that at all, just a genuinely nice person. It was refreshing.

Alex snorted at the joke, shoulders jostling Ace with their shudder. The bird squawked and moved to his back for a better perch. While the two shared their humor, the aerial predator was scanning the crowd, filtering pertinent details to Alex. One could never be too sure as to whom was nearby, the city was a big place with a lot of people.
So in a strange way, when they had gotten into the bus and Shelby attempted to defend him from the bus driver, she was right. Ace was his companion bird, relieved him of a lot of stress in unknown places and situation. He just needed to play it up to be convincing.
Grabbing the back of Shelby's shirt like a frightened child and pressing close to her, he brought Ace to the front with his other arm, keeping his shoulders hunched. Small and submissive, this was key in this moment. "S-she's right sir. This is my first time in the city and since I'm kind of allergic to dogs, Ace is all I have for a comfort pet. He's not likely to make a mess, I've had 'em since I was a kid... 'Sides, we paid ya so..."he let his words linger off as if afraid to continue.
The hawk shifted on Alex' arm up to his shoulder, nipping at his hair a little like parakeets would. Alex smiled and returned the favor with a chin scratch.

Well that was a relief at least, he could be useful to her in some capacity. Maybe, the jury was still out if he understood this modern art stuff or not. "I'll do my best to be interesting. Heh, but don't expect much. I know next to nothing about art."
At the snob bit he couldn't help but wince. He had met a few before and they were never fun to be around. "So people only go to art galleries to look sophisticated?"he asked, voice edging on a laugh. He was teasing her of course. He knew for some people art was expressive of themselves and for others it was just a way to make money.
Looking ahead the bus stop was now in sight with plenty of people crowding under the only shade available on this hot day. He wondered if he would be allowed to take Ace on the bus or if he would be forced to have the bird follow them in the air.

"That's cool, I've never been to a modern art museum. Actually I don't think I've ever seen modern art up close."He had a vague idea of what modern art was. He knew from what he over every once in a while that people were starting to think of graffiti as modern art. Why they would start thinking that he had no idea.
At the assignment thing he paused a moment. "I hope I'm not gonna get in the way of your assignment." Because that would suck. Shelby was nice and he didn't want to potentially ruin her grades.
Actually, he hadn't really thought about it but she could be meeting other people there. What were they going to say when she appeared with a stranger at her side? 'Hi I picked up this mutant kid on the side of the road, hope you don't mind if he tags along.' Yeah that would be great.
He shook off the thought though. She invited him, presumably with the knowledge that if she was meeting someone there she might have to explain him. Or have him explain his own presence. If worse came to worse he'd just say he was a distant cousin or something.

He was grateful nonetheless, it wasn't everyday that someone not only treated him to food but an experience as well. He would have to remember to pay her back somehow.
Picking up his trash, he followed her back to the sidewalk and tossed it in a nearby trashcan. "So your a student, what are you studying?"he asked curiously. They had been talking about him this entire time so he barely knew a thing about her. It actually made him feel a little shameful, it was kind of self-centered not to ask about this kind stranger.
He wondered what museum they were going to. The Natural History Museum maybe or perhaps one of the several art museums around the city. He could probably hazard a guess what kind from what she was studying.

He was surprised by her admission and would have corrected her that she didn't have to worry about them dying. That it wasn't a real death since he could just recreate them as if they had never gone. Then she was offering him a trip to a museum and food on top of that. How was he supposed to say no to that? Usually he could only see the inside of such places through the sight of insect constructs. But seeing one in person was a completely different story.
He nodded excitedly, "Sure! That's really generous of you Shelby, thank you." He stood as well, dusting himself off quickly. Good thing he had cleaned up earlier, wouldn't want to look too out of place. He grabbed his backpack and opened a pocket for the two rats to climb inside. Ace trilled and hopped up on his shoulder. He glanced at the butterfly and sighed. He hated cutting off constructs but it was extra energy he couldn't afford to waste, even if it was just a little. So with just a thought, the construct went still and broke down into dust.
He frowned a little, like he had eaten something sour, "That always feels weird."

Alex decided to keep some of his more closer to death stories to himself. He didn't want to concern this woman too much. No need to tell her about the times his constructs had been shot or run over.
At the mention of his meal he looked over at it. It had been a meal for two. High in calories but little else of value, given that it looked pretty cheap. He calculated in his head what he needed, what he had, and what was left. It was barely enough for himself. Maybe a pound of food with 1000 or so calories.
Ace needed at least a whole 2 pounds of food, upward of 800 calories, Pick and Pocket needed around a cup of food, about 400 calories each, and he himself needed at least 3 pounds, around 3000 calories each. 4,600 calories, 6 pounds of food at minimum to keep up his three constructs and himself up.
He looked back at Shelby and shrugged with a smile, "Probably will. You're right, it's not exactly the best meal and this place is proving harder to hunt in than I thought. Especially since I can't start a fire without someone calling the cops."
