The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"So, what brought you to New York from Idaho? I assume they already asked you these questions, but I like to hear people tell me their stories, rather than reading it in a file..."
He thought about it for a moment. Yes he had answered that question before but every time it came up he wondered how much he should give away. In the end he went with the stander answer. "I ran away a bit after my mutation appeared. I felt unsafe so I left."he shrugged and went to grab a couple plates to put the nearly done meat on, "Since it was a foster home I was more afraid of, heh, being handed over to some government goons than being disowned. It's kinda silly looking back on it."
"But yeah, I hoofed it from Idaho to here for no particular reason. Just ended up going east this whole time." He added some salt to the meat, just enough to help flavor it. He waited a little bit longer before finally moving the food from the pan to the plates. Adding more butter to the pan he poured in the eggs next and began to cook them.

"What would you think of watching some real-life Mario Kart, complete with fireballs and flying shells and banana peels? Or whatever happened to work with the particular race's mutant cast. It'd need some pretty special cars, and probably some dedicated kinetics and whatnot running damage control."
He grinned and nodded, glad to see Tobias hadn't actually given up. He was just looking at it logically. "Yeah, I'd watch it. It'd sure beat the hell out of regular car racing. No offense, but the same circle over and over gets dull after a while." He looked up as the bus pulled up and stood. "Actually, I can't imagine why people wouldn't invest in mutant sports. It'd make them way more intense. Though the fields for them would have to be bigger."
He wasn't big into sports. Used to not have the time to watch or keep up with it. The only time he got interested is if it happened to be the only thing available to watch. "A lot of things would have to be adjusted but it's definitely do-able." He swung his backpack back on to his shoulders and hesitated at the door of the bus. Last time he had ridden one he had been bring Margo to the mansion and they almost got themselves killed by a man who had over heard them talking about their mutations. He could only hope that the same thing wouldn't happen again.
Stepping onto the bus was a little less than crowded and thankfully there was a seat open. "Go ahead and sit." He gestured to it for Tobias.

He listened but was shaking his head. "I understand, but shouldn't that be judged on a case by case bases. Like, you can't do that sort of stuff, I certainly can't. Hell a lot of mutants can't lift a car and send it sailing over others. Or push them out of the way, or anything that could make the competition unfair. And the psychics who can certainly aren't going to hopping in a car that's supposed to go a hundred something miles an hour. Given that it takes most people years to get a simple handle on their mutation, let alone that kind of control, if they're even bothering to train with it."
He sighed and leaned back only to be stopped by his backpack. He shrugged the heavy bag off his shoulders and into his lap. "I mean, blanket statements like that...I dunno, that bugs me and the fact that you have to give up on something you love bugs me. There's a reason why competitions have try outs, to not only see if you're up to par but also to estimate where you are in comparison to others. Mutants should be able to try out, just like everyone else."

"I kind of spent all my life on a career path that isn't exactly available to me anymore. Even if I could fit in a car anymore, mutants aren't exactly welcome in competition. Not the end of the world, even if it sucks, but I haven't had much luck replacing racing."
He sat down next to him, listening to his story. "Well that...sucks..."he murmured, thinking on it. He couldn't help the guy on this one. Tobias would just have to figure out on his own what made him happy or if he could some how get back into racing. "I don't think you should give up on it completely. I mean your mutation doesn't exactly put you at an advantage. So what do they have to complain about?"
He shrugged, "I dunno, just a thought." A worrying thought. Mutants aren't exactly welcome...Did that apply to everything or just sports? He wasn't sure what he wanted out of life yet, what career he could go for. But he didn't want to be halted just because some assholes wanted to keep things mutant free.

"Thank you, I'd love to try."
He nodded, letting the meat cook for a while he grabbed a bowl. He cracked some eggs in the bowl, enough for a couple of good portions of scrambled eggs. As he used a spoon to mix the eggs he nodded to her question.
"So, you just moved in, I assume?"
"Yeah, a little while ago. Gawain brought me in."he said with a shrug. He wasn't surprised he hadn't run into the the counselor. He tended to stick to his assigned room or walk about the city, just exploring. Plus this place was pretty big.
"What brings you to the Mansion? Also, would you like some coffee with your breakfast?"
"I would like some coffee thanks. As for what brings me here, four walls and roof mostly. Free food is a nice bonus as is the free education."he said grinning, "Oh and not having to go back to Idaho." He set the bowl of mixed eggs down and turned the meat on the pan. Nearly done, he added a bit more water to keep it from burning.

(Continuation of this thread: Birds of a Feather. Long story short Alex and Margo met for the first time and in talking about their powers a man on the bus takes notice and follows to the two to the Mansion grounds. The date is July 26, 2014, so if your character is around the mansion at about that time, feel free to jump in.)
Alex wished he hadn't been right. He really, really wished he hadn't. They were a few blocks away from the mansion, in the home stretch of getting somewhere safe. And who do they have tailing them?! Well actually he had no idea but he was pretty certain the guy was up to no good. Following two teens wasn't exactly the pinnacle of pure intentions. Not unless you were chaperoning he supposed.
He didn't look back. Didn't need to. Mary was above them, the hawk relaying the man's position to him. Through the hawks eyes he was able to see what the man looked like. Scruffy features, jacket despite the warmth outside, maybe 30 to 40 years old.
Was his arm hanging to closely to his side, a gun, a hidden weapon? He couldn't tell! It was nerve-wracking having someone tailing them and he had no idea how to handle the situation.
Calm, just stay calm...The mansion was coming into view, almost there. He had to fight the temptation to run. Instead his hand tightened around Margo's when he heard the tell-tale sound of a gun's safe clicking off. "H-hold it right there!" The man's voice trembled, as if terrified.
Alex paused, giving Margo a glance. They already discussed what they would do, Margo would go for help, Alex would be right behind her. Hopefully...
Swallowing fear, the young man released Margo's hand slowly and turned to look at the man. "Can I help you sir?" He kept his voice as calm as he could. Getting a good look at the guy, he could see that the man apparently hadn't been getting any sleep, if the dark bags under his eyes were any indication. There was also the matter of how the gun trembled. The man wasn't sure of himself.
"You two are mutants aren't you? Right under our noses this whole time, two little freaks pretending to be kids." There was an edge of paranoia in the stranger's voice, "Well I won't have! Not any more!"
"Sir, we did nothing wrong. Please, just calm down."Alex turned slowly to face the man fully, flinching when the gun was aimed for his head, wobbling dangerously.

She continued their little question game, maybe in hopes to distract him as well as herself of their predicament. "Favorite color?" He hesitated to answer, talking, questions, that's how this guy spotted them in the first place. Picked them out as mutants. They couldn't even talk about it without drawing unwanted attention to themselves. "Green I guess, you?" He said after a pause, the question was harmless. At least it should be.
This is why he avoided crowded towns, too many eyes, too many ears. People everywhere yet if they knew what you were they wouldn't help. They would never help. He felt his gut twist in a knot, he knew he wasn't powerful enough to defend both himself and Margo. If it came to violence there was a good chance someone was going to get hurt. "What did you see back there? I would look myself, but...Don't know if you can tell, but I'm in panic mode."
He shook his head, "I...I didn't see anything, but on some...animal level I feel like the guy is dangerous. That we need to get away as soon as possible." It might have been all that time sharing minds with animals, it might have been all that time spent lost in forests, this instinctual sense of nearby danger. But as soon as the bus stopped again he was standing, grabbing Margo's hand once more leading her out with the small crowd. And behind them the man followed.

"I thought so. People have their habits, no matter how much they try to deny them! As long as it doesn't mean that you have a pastime of kidnapping homeless mutants, I figure it just means something today will go somewhat smoother than its worst possible form."
He smiled, relieved that Tobias didn't find it strange that he was the second person that he had brought home with him in just as many weeks. He wondered if this would start to be a thing that happened on the regular. He wouldn't mind it, least he could do for folks who needed it.
"As awkward as it is to be the one needs help, I really appreciate this. And even if this place doesn't work out, for whatever reason-at least you tried to help. I couldn't ask for that much, much less more."
He shrugged, "It's no problem. If anything it'll at least give you some time to save up again and get an apartment if it doesn't work for you." They arrived at the bus stop shortly and at looking at the posted schedule it was a relief to see it was only a few more minuets waiting. "So, um, why did you move here anyway? Isn't the city kind of not the right environment? Not that I'm judging, just curious."

Well the clumsy catch of words could be attributed to the fact that Alex had avoided people and major cities during the majority of his travels. He wasn't really used to holding back or switching up his words at a moments notice. So situations like this could make him a bit clumsy. But of course Margo didn't know that. Alex barely recognized that fact himself.
For the moment at least it worked well enough, odd looks aside. Though of course his tense body language didn't help. "Try to minimize suspicious body language, would you?" Margo's soft words filtered through his panic, her head ducked close to his, "Something the matter? Just one more bus stop, if I'm correct. Think we can make it, acting normal as can be?"
He took a deep breath, closing his eyes to try and forced back the panic. He let go of her hand, diverting his gaze to the pattern of the seats. He focused in on his connection to his construct, Marry, who was currently flying ahead of them. For a few seconds he let himself feel the sensation of wind against nonexistent feathers, the weightlessness of flight carry him somewhere else, far above his earthly troubles.
Slowly he released her hand, forcing his body to loosen tense muscles. He nodded to her words, "Yeah...sorry, I can act normal..."

"Okay, I take it there are security measures at the school? What kind, how many, are they effective?"
"I don't know. I haven't been there long enough. But I do know if you hit the call button someone will come to let you in and if you ask for help we'll get help. It is a place full of...strong folk, after all." His tone hushed, calm, hoping to keep her calm. He had been about to say mutants but he wasn't about to let anything more slip. They had already made the apparent mistake with talking about their mutations in public. Nobody else needed to get involved.
He coughed and went back to the idle chatter. "Pizzas, good. I like hotdogs myself."he said with a nod. Normal kids, they were normal kids, nothing to bother with here. He looked back at the man as the bus stopped again. The guy didn't get up, no in fact his gaze was firmly on the two teens and something inside Alex froze. He grabbed hold of Margo's hand, body tensing as if ready to run. Every instinct inside him screaming danger, escape, run away!

"Alright, skipping your turn, because mine didn't really count... Um, favorite literature, including poetry?"
"Hm, that's a toughy...I dunno, maybe Shade's Children."he shrugged. He had read a lot back in Idaho and occasionally during his travels. But he hadn't stuck around long enough to finish a book, not without stealing from the library and that just wouldn't be right. "It was in the banned books section and I figured it'd be fun to read."
"Heh, maybe we should call this the 'favorite' game."
"Maybe, favorite food?"he asked, keeping the louder conversation dull enough in hopes that the creep watching them would become disinterested. It didn't seem to be working. "Yeah, I don't really care. As long as he doesn't make a scene out in public." Alex nodded at Margo's words. It wouldn't do to have themselves end up on the news or the internet. "When we get off the bus stay close, alright? There's an call button at the front gate. If anything happens you need to get to that button."he instructed quietly.
The mansion wasn't so open that anybody could walk in. Hopefully the call button would work well in this emergency, if it turned out to be an emergency. He felt his gut knot almost painfully, he knew this was an emergency. If they got off the bus at the stop closest to the mansion and the guy was still following them, he didn't know what he'd do.

Stepping out into the heat again Alex took another swig of water. Summer was winding down but it was coming to hard end it seemed, not quite willing to let go and make way for the fall season. Part of him wanted to head south, follow the animal migration to places that stayed warm year round. Heat was hard sure but snow was harsher. But he had a semi-permanent home now, people who knew him, it wouldn't be right to move away now.
He was pulled from his thoughts by Tobias, "So, how often do you pick up strays and take them home?"
A short laugh burst from his throat at that and face suddenly felt warm. "Would you believe me if I said that the last one was about two weeks ago?"he chuckled, "I'm not kidding, I just ran into this chick who happened to be a mutant and who happened to need a place to stay."
"It's kind of crazy, I was kind of a stray myself three weeks ago to be honest."he shrugged, "I just keep running into people who need help and I can actually do something about it now." It was weird but happy sensation, to be the one giving help instead of receiving it for once. He was actually making a change for at least a few people, however small it was.

"I think, personally, that it's completely unfair that you ask such a question. After all, every animal is unique, and beautiful in its own way. Having said that- probably deer. Shy, light footed, proud. Everything's to love about deer."
He nodded in agreement, noting it mentally for later. Deer were cool to make and mentally attach to but unfortunately tended to be gun targets. Which sucked for him because that shit hurt. Still he was sure here in the city and especially on the school grounds that wouldn't happen. However, Margo had to go and make things hard for him.
"What, are you thinking about getting me a pet? That would be really nice" she laughed. "I'd have to make that hard for you. Hm, I want a mammoth."
"Ah, that'd take so long. Where in the world would I get a mammoth in the first place."he chuckled, nudging her a little. When the question was reversed on him, he took a moment to think about it. Though the addition caught his attention, "It's not just me that's paranoid, right? Somebody looks like he wants trouble to you too?"
"I think my favorite animal would have to be, heh, I guess I have an affinity for birds. Hawks mostly."he said with a nod before lowering his voice, "Yeah, he's been watching us for a while. Even if he follows us to the house I don't think he'll be much trouble. We can handle him." It was just one guy right, no big deal. Besides they were heading to a mansion chalk full of mutants, some trained in combat too. What was one guy gonna do?

"Where are you gonna fit all of that?!"
He laughed and shrugged. He'd eat as much as he could and if he couldn't finish he'd ask for a box or something. He had already eaten a bit earlier but being a teenage boy had the benefit of having stomach that was endless pit. Or it could have something to do with his mutation, who knew. He'd find out when he was older and stopped growing but for now, he'd eat.
He was about to say as much when they were interrupted. Two strangers greeted Shelby and one promptly invaded the poor ginger's space. He stood back and allowed them to talk a bit. It wasn't his place after all. Still, it made him feel a bit awkward, being the odd man out. He didn't know these folks and they didn't know him.
When the male of the two strangers glanced at him Shelby introduced them. "Oh, right. This is Alex. He's a... friend I ran into on the way here. Thought he might want to tag along so I invited him. Alex, this is David and Sherry. My classmates."
"Uh, hi, it's nice to meet you."he said giving the two a little wave. He glanced at Shelby, she hadn't told him that her friends, or rather classmates were going to be here. At least not to his memory. "So you two are in Shelby's class. That must be fun."he said, absentmindedly shifting Ace from his shoulder to his arm and stroking under Ace's chin.
