The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

They didn’t. That was why Sam was taking this so hard. Mirror was one of the least selfish people he knew, in fact the mere thoughts he was having on ending Travis so Mirror didn’t have to would have pissed Mirror off. That was okay though. His friend didn’t need to take a life. To know what it’s like. To see another face when you nightmares that won’t end. Sam already had them. If he could prevent his friend from having that... it was fine by him.
”I’ll do what I can.” he said not promising. Those could be broken. Like his promise to keep conversations drama free for a friend. He thought he was able to do that but it was clear he couldn’t. Hence the current topic.
”Surprised you aren’t trying to stop me.” he said not making eye contact. ”I have to find the guy first.” he had law enforcement looking for him. He had vigilantes looking for him. He even had Carrick looking for him. If he called in any more favors others would be looking for Travis for different reasons.
Taking another sip of his coffee he sighed and decided that this conversation should end before anything else he might come to regret is said. ”It was good seeing you Lee. Sorry I couldn’t keep it drama free.” the icemancer stood.
”Tell Kev, I already got sometimes saved in the danger room when he is ready. It will be good to see you two more.” he said honestly before excusing himself. ”Call me if you need anything ya?” and with that Sam went for the exit.

”I don’t know. Magic is new to us and we are just figuring this stuff out. Becca lost her powers when she drank something that gave her access to magic. So it isn’t to hard to believe it is related that way.” his tone took on a more cold one as he explained. This was a subject he had been investing so much time recently.
”Iris?” Sam asked, ”She’s fine, she's young. She still doesn’t know why things are different now but she knows something is.” his hands indented the cardboard cup even more as he continued, ”She gets sad when I pick her up and don’t turn pink or sprout a tail. Depending on the day of the week.”
Her hand touched his and he stopped crushing the cup. He looked down at her hand on his for a second and listened to her words. ”Doesn’t feel that way. Opposite actually. The amount of times they pulled me out of the gutter saved me. I couldn’t even catch the guy that did this.” he sighed loudly pulled his hand away from hers and scratched the back of his head.
”I’m doing everything to make sure they don’t get a chance to do anything to him. I’m going to be the one to do it.” he said truthfully.

”Not just the mansion. It’s fine now.” he said glossing over it was destroyed recently. There was no way she didn’t know about that incident. They had done everything in their power to protect the students and they did. Sure he and some of the others who fought the mystics got injured heavily but that was what the healers were for and that was what he was there. To take the beating so no one else and to. It was something he excelled at.
”Bigger.” he said sighing. No point in lying right? ”X-gene or not the students there are safe. Kevin will be safe there. They are well protected and they will continue to be. This was an isolated incident. One that I’m going great lengths to insure never happens again.” his hands tightened around his coffee cup causing it to warp.
His jaw clenched and he had the urge to yell but he fought it. Just verbalizing the situation was enough to make him want to hit something. ”Maya and Becca’s kid Iris... her mutation was stolen by some... fanatic mystic who wants to remove X-genes.”
”I had him... and I was cocky and he got me good.” the images of Becca and Maya and Iris flashed through his mind. The look of Maya had. He had been there. Lived it. He was going to make sure they never have the chance to do anything like that.
”I’m worried what Maya is going to do to this person if I’m not there to stop them. I’m worried about my friend, Lee.” he was sad and angry. He knew the feeling of not being able to protect his kids. They might have been illusions but they were real to him all the same.

>>>”Thanks Sam. I appreciate it,”
The icemancer smiled in response. It was a sheepish smile but while he could lie to a lot of people, Lee made it difficult. Sam didn’t say anything at first but then nodded his head into a cup of coffee. Wondering what he should say next. Should he just leave?
>>>”Things have really been that bad since the last time we talked?”
”I used to be good at lying.” he said finally. ”Long life.” he finally answered. ”It’s been worse before but it could be better.” he was struggling with his own coping mechanisms for his anger and frustrations. He hadn’t been as bad with the drinking as the past but his need to exhaust himself instead of dealing with the real problems were as bad as ever.
”I’ll spare you the details but I’m alright. Really. I will be at least. It’s everyone else I’m worried about.” he said looking to his sooted knuckles. One of them looked like there was a speck of blood ot it. He ignored it and took another sip of his drink.
”Maybe I should get going...” he said finally looking to the door. She requested no drama. He thought he could do that for her. She deserved it. Especially what she had been through with Tarin.

”Yeah... I get it. Teenagers rarely think about things though.” Sam said in agreement. Sam said almost forgetting who the father was. Tarin could medium. They could see, speak and be possessed by dead people. That would have given the icemancer cause to get the screening. Energy vampire was one thing but seeing ghosts and hearing their voices... Sam shuddered and shook his head before taking another sip of coffee.
”Ah, the coffee dates.” Sam said remembering vaguely. They were friends then too, a bit more awkward situation then between the two of them but that was a decade ago and since then Sam grew as a person. Since then he had run into a telepath, lived countless lifetimes with a family that were a mind game for said telepath. Became an alcoholic, got clean. Adopted a friend who became a kid and even deaged himself.
”Don’t take this the wrong way but I vaguely recall you in the morning. I get hit in the head a lot.” he said chuckling, the mansion healer DocProf would argue too much. ”I just remember you could out drink me when it came to coffee.” he said honestly.
”Nice. I got a list of a few if you ever need any. Ones a former student at the mansion. Might have seen him or heard of him. Irish kid, more than trouble but he can get a crowd going... he’s booked for the next decade out on St. Patty’s day though. Lost a bet.” Sam didn’t mention who lost. Both parties would continued to argue that they were helping the other out.
The question should have been something Sam was prepared for. Staring off into the distance he wondered what was a safe topic for her other than his work at the bar. He was still trying to convince Lee to come around more. So should he mention the fact that it was destroyed recently? That they had mystics coming around so often to put wards on the school? That he had been tracking someone that broke into the school to test some magic on Mirror and Becca’s child without consent and stealing their toddlers daughters mutation? Something Sam personally felt responsible for seeing as he was laid out by the same person?
Should he talk about the summoned demon he slayed? That was kinda cool. No... Should he talk about Eve. She was a student at the mansion and now his adopted daughter. Also the resident firebug. No, that might fall under the drama category. He’d be the first to admit it was a weird situation. ‘Drama’ something Sam had decided to avoid for the sake of Lee.
Maybe the time he got kidnapped recently and had to have Liz and Carrick rescue him from his evil Ex-telepath that first played mind games with him? No... that probably wasn’t a good topic either. Nor the multiple relapses with alcohol he had recently. She didn’t need to know that.
He didn’t make eye contact. ”Same old song different day to boogie.” he finally said deciding that most of his life would have fallen under the drama category.

Nodding and fully understanding he agreed. No one should have to deal with bigoted parents. It was also more reason in Sam’s opinion to have Kevin do the screening for the X-gene, but he wasn’t going to continue suggesting it. Lee had her reasons.
He almost choked on his next sip of coffee at the groan. Was it that far out of the question? He knew Lee always had strong opinions about his team and the work they did but a groan? Her gaze was what solidified his thoughts. Grabbing his chest and coughing a few times. ”ooof. Yeah, I get it. For you, though if he asks anyone else running the teams you might have to talk to them about it.”
”Though it might be easier to convince the other team leaders if you came around a bit more.” he held up his hands to frame Lee’s face from afar. ”Maybe with a rookie status. You could pull off the suit. Heck you might even lead his team.” he was teasing now and knew it was a long shot but he still liked to surrounded himself with people he trusted. They were hard to come by as of late.
”Sounds like he is a handful now. Must get that from you. Energy to spare. Interesting.” he mused as he stroked his chin. Surprised the hairs on his face didn’t burn off during the recent altercation. Did he need a shave?
”I’m looking forward to seeing Kevin again. Sure he’s a cool kid.” realizing he was pulling the conversation to the team again he took a moment to sip his coffee and stare at the soot on a few of his knuckles.
Looking back up to Lee, ”How’s everything else? Feel like it’s been a bit since I saw you last.”

”Fair enough.” Mothers knew best. That was something Sam had to remind himself during the conversation. ”No telling if a planned fight even triggers a mutation.” he added. Usually it was a time of high stress or puberty. Lee’s from the sound of things was common timeframe for powers to emerge. His own not so common.
”He’s your kid. He’ll probably keep me in there longer than I want.” he smirked into his coffee mug. ”And if your powers are hereditary or some variation of it I’m sure he’ll have more energy than he’ll know what to do with.” Sam said raising his eyebrows.
”It would just be a check if he has the X-gene.” there were other methods to determine if he had powers what they would be. Precogs were unreliable at best though. The future was never set in stone from his understanding.
”Who knows, might even want on the Junior X- team.” he said floating the idea. Something he was sure Lee would disapprove of. The young X-men roster was full of teenagers who wanted to do good. Far less dangerous than the actual team but they did get to travel a bit. Usually search and rescue or crowd control.

”Don’t I know it.” he said smirking and already shying away from the swat before it landed. He was teasing of course but also knew what Lee was capable of if she wanted to land something more than a playful swat. His lone eye shifted from the tables and chairs being so close together. There be a lot of collateral damage. Good thing he wasn’t worried about that.
”He still doesn’t know what his mom is capable of?” Sam asked chuckling, ”You want to throw some gloves on and go a few rounds to show him off what you can do? Doubt he’d want me to teach him after that.” how much did Kevin know about Lee? What she can do. Sam figured the energy leeching was obvious but then again, Kevin could be immune to it.
”I’ll share some stories with him next time I see him. Might put you in a whole knew light.” Sam said jokingly.
”Doc can run a scan on him. They stopped doing the blood tests a while ago. Found out too many kids don’t like needles. Doesn’t help if they burst into flames while doing it.” or when he was a child freeze the doctor who performed the blood draw. He didn’t say the last part. Lee didn’t need to know all the details.
Sam took a sip of his coffee and then cleared his throat,”Might sound like I’m lecturing, I’m not. Just an observation. Can’t keep him in a bubble. Kids get into fights, be better to know what he is capable of then to have his powers trigger unexpectedly. At least he’s telling you he wants to join a fight club. Bring him by to check out the campus at some point. We just remodeled. He can see the danger room. Kids love that place.” the mansion was destroyed recently hence the ‘remodel’ though he was pretty sure Lee would have hear about it at some point. Even if she was trying to avoid the news.

”Thirteen?” Sam asked out loud over his coffee mug. ”Wow... I feel old now. You must feel that all the time.” Sam said teasing. ”Could be worse though. I was crashing helicopters when I was thirteen.” Sam didn’t have much of a childhood in fact his stopped quickly when he was five.. Something Lee knew enough about and something Sam didn’t like bringing up other than the occasional joke at his own expense.
”He’s starting at the mansion too soon right?” Sam asked curiously, ”I got a few self defense classes that would give him a good head start on the other kids in that league if he joins.” Sam said grinning.
Another sip of his coffee made him really appreciate that second shot of espresso in it.` It also gave him a second to think of the best way to ask. Especially if Kevin was going to attend the mansion soon. ”So... any signs of Kev getting powers? He Lifting cars yet?” he specifically left out Lee’s side effects with her powers. That was one of the subjects he learned to tiptoe around over the years.

The tree slowed the fall for Travis and gave his clone a little trouble as it bounced off a large limb or two before falling to the ground. Clones don’t feel. They are just tools to be willed and controlled, an extension of the icemancer, who was feeling more than enough for several clones.
Memories flashed before him as he erupted from the window. He was in a small room wondering where his parents were, scared and alone. ”TRAVIS!” instead of following the mystic down he went up, lifted into the air by a construct of ice that rose up next to the mansion. Snow fall was next. The lone eye fixed onto the one who broke into his home not once but twice now. How many more times? It didn’t matter. Never again.
He was ten, chained to a bed his arm sore from being poked and prodded. They needed blood samples. He was a child though and didn’t understand why they needed his blood. He was alone. The ice clone rushed after Travis. Clones didn’t feel. They don’t tire.
The platform under Sam’s feet shifted downward heavy snow started to fall. His hands were raised now, pointing in the direction Travis was running. The blue beam connected with the ground and a mound of ice started to form, sharp spires protruding out waiting to snare the man that was experimenting on his loved ones. It was meant to slow Travis. Redirect him to the exit. The main one.
The clone continued to run it shouted after the person it was chasing, “Travis!”
It was the first night in the mansion. The first night he felt safe. The first restful sleep he every had.
Ice rose up under his feet as he slid downwards accelerating with a slide towards his target oblivious to the few students that were running back to the mansion. Some slowed mouth open as they saw one of their teachers chasing someone. Sam was also oblivious to the cars that were gathered. The only thing he was focused on was making Travis pay.

Sam said all he needed to say to Travis, his retort wasn’t worth responding to. The man or whatever he really was did experiment on Iris; in fact he was up until this moment. That was all Sam needed to know. It didn’t matter to the icemancer how long he had been researching up until this point. Travis still wasn’t sure how it worked. The air temperature dropped another few degrees as more ice caked on the wall behind his clone ready to be called to action.
They eventually returned; under his armor the X-man's stomach was in knots. He wasn’t sure what was going to happen, he was planning for the worst. Years of training and his recent experience with Mystics screamed for him to keep Iris and Maya away. They all wanted this resolved and Travis had the most to gain if he helped.
>>>"Do it."
Another knot. His fingers twitched and he unfolded his arms. The clone mirrored across the room. Both were waiting.
>>>”Don’t worry, Iris. This won’t hurt at all.”
It was only seconds, but it felt like minutes passed. Rage filled him when he heard Travis utter Iris’s name. Sam wanted to break his jaw for starters, then there was a light. One that caused his focus to shift to Iris. His thermal sense still active dulled in response to prevent a headache.
>>>This key will only ever work on her. Melt it down if you want it destroyed.” ”Now if you will excuse me. Five minutes aren’t getting any longer.”
Sam didn’t move neither did the ice clone. It was as if they were both holding their breath in anticipation. To see if Travis lied. To see if he had to be the one to break the agreement. One he never verbally agreed to.
The horns were first. Normally that would have been a bad sign but these were Iris’s powers after all. The tail was next and then the pink skin. Normal, that was what this was. The grin on her face seemed more alive to the icemancer, he finally breathed.
>>> "He's all yours, Sam." "What? I lied. Hate the sin, not the sinner. Bye, Travis. The Veil will take good care of you."
The ice in front of the door vanished again allowing for an easy exit meant for Maya and the little imp. There was a genuine smile directed at the pair as they exited. ”So brave kid. Told you your tail would be back. ” he said encouragingly before stepping in front of the door.
>>>”I knew mutants couldn’t be trusted.”
The window was the safest route for Travis at this point, also the fastest way out of the building. It was what Sam wanted so when the mystic turned and started to run, he weakened the ice coating just enough to make it a harder surface before breaking through the glass. The impact outside the window was next. Was it a tree outside of Maya and Becca’s room or was it open? It had been a minute since Sam had last been here.
”Maya, lock down the school. Tell the teachers to tell the kids it’s a drill. Send a team after me, trackers. Not you. He’s not leaving till I say he does.” the clone jumped from the window after Travis. Sam’s approach to the window was a little slower as he could still feel Travis with his thermal sense but it was fading. Distance. He’d fix that. Shorten it. Till he had his hands on Travis.
The air outside plummeted in temperature, cold was an understatement. It was frigid. Frost and ice erupted outward from Maya’s window covering the mansion walls to prevent reentry for the mystic and prevent any onlookers. Sam didn’t want an audience for this.

It took too long, he was running late. Always running late. Even when he left early, late. Today it was because of a fire mystic. Not the one he was friends with, one that thought releasing a horse made of the ‘eternal flames of Hell’ was a good idea. He smelt like burnt hair. Sam did, not the horse. The horse was gone now, started some apartment fires further down town before burning itself out. Eternal needed an asterisk apparently.
Glancing down as he opened the door to the coffee shop he saw some soot on his knuckles. Even with the ice armor he still managed to show signs he was in a fight. He hated magic. ”I’m late! I know!” Sam said walking past Lee where she found a seat and went to order himself a coffee. A strong one at that.
Pulling a few dollars from his pocket and placing it on the counter he turned and made a B-line back to the table before setting his coffee on it and then dusting off his jeans before sitting down. ”Looking good Lee! As always. How have you been? Bar? Kiddo?” Sam said fixing his lone eye on her. He was trying to gauge a response from each subject.
They had been friends for years, even when Lee started pulling they stayed in touch. He understood. The city was a lot. Heck he was thinking of a vacation for himself soon. Anywhere without magic.

”No, I’m just tired of losing those I care about. They were only in danger because you caused me to seize. After firing randomly you left after you dropped me. Did you know I was ready to take my own life before I did lose control. Something people don’t realize about my clones.” Sam said not worried that he was revealing too much of his abilities. ”They think for me when I can’t.” that was all he was going to say about that. He had a telepath all up in his head before. He lived mind games. There was little Travis could say to mess with the icemancer.
A clone pulled itself free from the wall behind Travis and mimicked the icemancers posture. Arms folded, waiting for a signal to attack should they try to escape. ”So you had no idea what it would do to the child if she was the first one.” so he was willing to endanger her. Not surprising. Sam could only trust Travis as he could throw him.
Okay, maybe Travis was getting to him the way he talked about Iris. He was talking about her as if she was nothing more than a lab rat. It reminded him of his handler and the doctors that studied him. Beat him, experimented on him. He thought he repressed enough of it, found ways to cope but this conversation was turning him into the angry child he was decades ago.
”We said it before, it’s not a disease. It’s something she will learn to control. Something she will use to help others around her. The way I’m trying to do now. I’m sick of having these ****ing conversations. If you can’t see the good we have done and still can do I’m not going to try and explain it. While you said I’m dangerous and my power corrupted, I’m a product of my environment. People like you kidnapped me and decided I wasn’t human. I was a tool, something that can be sharpened and directed, and here I am. She on the other hand. She will grow up in a safe one. One where people like you will never get close to her again. I’ll do whatever it takes to keep that from happening even sell what’s left of my soul.” Sam said letting out a loud sigh disappointed he was still talking. He needed to find out more of what Travis knows.
It was true, they’d use the adapted they had on staff. In fact he was pretty sure Mama T would be right out in the hallway in case Iris did lose control when her powers got turned back on. It also made Sam under the impression that Travis knew more about the staff and security here in the mansion. How long had he been studying this place? Sure it was an open door policy for strays but they would have noticed random people coming and going right? He was going to have to have a talk with security again. Maybe Becca and Rex could help with more anti-magic or magic detecting wards.

>>> "Give me a f*** break"
She said it so he wouldn’t have to. He would have done a bit more yelling and possibly more hitting. Again, Maya was the best of them which was why it was so important that Sam would be there to do anything before she might do something her or Becca would regret.
>>>"F*ck."
Indeed. ”F*ck.” Sam let out a sigh of relief that could also be described as a disappointed grunt. It was one of the last things he wanted to happen but it was for Iris, Maya and Becca. Travis wouldn’t get far even with a five minute head start. In that time he could call Carrick to watch the skies or Liz to track him down with the mansion dogs. He couldn’t change his scent right?
”You sure about this?” he asked Maya one last time before unfreezing the door behind him. The window and the rest of the room still remained coated in ice. He wasn’t going to give Travis the chance to run. ”You go and get Iris then. I’ll wait here with...” he looked to the half shifted form of Maya’s wife and whatever form Travis was going to next. He wasn’t going to let Travis get into Maya’s head anymore.
Sam stared hard at Travis, his thermal vision focused on a single movement. The ground and walls coated in ice started to form points ready to shoot outward.
”I don’t have to tell you I’m fine with making it as painful as possible if you cross us again right? You’re making me want to welcome my old life back. I spent years trying to move past it and you and people like you keep pushing me towards it attacking my loved ones.” there was a pause next. ”I have a family now. I'd do anything to keep them safe and happy.”
There was something that Sam had been wondering. He’d get the answers eventually but there was something bugging him with all of this. His lack of understanding with magic was again making this situation more difficult. Magic always cost something. They had all seen first hand when the cost couldn’t be paid. The mansion being destroyed was a direct result of it.
”If you didn’t sneak in here... what would have happened to Iris? You came back for a reason and I doubt your the type to marvel at your own work.” his gaze didn’t break. He tired to study the face before him from across the room. Either way Sam had a feeling he wasn’t going to like the answer.

There was a reassuring nod when Maya looked to him. It was one of the few things he understood about magic is that with enough effort spells could be broken down or learned. His time fighting the demon with Rex showed him it was possible.
The icemancer was half tempted to call Rex before they agreed that it was enough for the moment. Sam didn’t care what Travis or whoever this person said. They couldn’t be trusted and they were backed into a corner with ice closing in all around them. If it wasn’t for them being in the school he would have been more aggressive.
He was, however so he wasn’t. Meaning Travis could talk his way out or at least attempt to.
>>>”And it is no danger to anyone, save myself, if it goes wild. Unlike Cold Steel here.”
”You have no idea.” the ice encasing the walls started to grow fine points as they started to extend outward towards the mystic formally known as Travis. ”Cooperating? She’s a child! She doesn’t understand what you did!” the room got colder still. He didn’t like this and from the sound of things the spell was going to fade away anyways. So what was the point of letting him go? Shouldn’t they just capture him? Put him in a mirror until they could be sure Iris was back to normal.
Sam almost missed the tail, he get when playing with her. Or when she gender shifted him. ”Maya... I’ll let you make the call. To me it sounds like he’s backed into a corner knows it. My understanding of it, he needs to put some magic into her to keep her from getting her powers back.” it was a very loose understanding. One that Sam didn’t want to gamble on. He’d seen what happened when magic ran wild. He wasn’t willing to let that happen to Iris. Which was why the icemancer was willing to listen to what Travis had to say.
