The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Aiden shifted nervously. If Persi wasn't going to move..?
Utterly unable to come up with ideas and starting to just wish Cafas were significantly less patient, Aiden breathed an overlarge sigh of relief when Cafas finally called them out. He sounded annoyed. At least he already understood that it was entirely Persi, right? And it even looked like Persi had gotten tired of being an idiot and was going to just get this all over with.
Having lived with him for this long, Aiden really should have known better, and not been so surprised (and horrified) when Persi tried to close the door again. What was he thinking? ... Both on a respect level, which Persi never seemed to get anyway, and on a basic common sense thing; Cafas was older, larger, and one of the X-men, not some scrawny kid, as he quickly proved.
Aiden edged through the door as soon as it was clear, and tried to find it at all amusing that Cafas was essentially dragging Persi down the hall. It didn't work; there were too many people drifting past (also known as two random people who didn't even look at them) for something that wasn't really funny at all so much as sad at this point to have any chance of improving his mood. Instead, he just did his best to stay to the right side of the hallway, behind Cafas and Persi, and only looked in their direction enough to stay on track and not miss a turn. When they arrived at what was apparently the so-called Danger Room, he hung back even more, though far more because he didn't want, say, the suddenly less-occupied-by-being-dragged Persi looking at him that because he was apprehensive about going into the Danger Room. At this point, he'd take a little danger over the rest of this.

Aiden listened intently to Persi's suggestions. Well, it didn't seem very elaborate or anything, but it would probably work. Okay. He could do this!
Probably. As they continued walking back Aiden found his initial resolve slipping. All it would take for the whole thing to fall apart would be for a teacher to be in the halls for any reason, or for someone to ask and not believe that Persi had just lost track of time. What if they recognized him as being a skipper and delinquent and everything and just sent them off to get punished? Aiden would be forever marked as a rulebreaker! That would be bad.
He started to shift nervously as the mansion came into sight through the trees ahead of them. All right. Persi was probably right. Their best bet was to just get through the public, inhabited parts of the mansion as quickly as they could without drawing attention to themselves. He just wasn't sure if he could actually do that. He shot an unfocused glance in Persi's direction. "Are you sure it'll work?" he asked nervously. And hopefully stalling a little bit here would convince Persi to take the lead and so be able to fend off anyone they did come across.

Please don't suggest that. Definitely don't suggest actual people. Aiden never, ever, ever wanted to ever come across someone who could read minds.
Ever.
Ever.
When Aiden finally turned around, his heart twitching like it couldn't decide to make a break for safety through his esophagus or to just fall over dead right where it was, it was to find Persi leaning against the door. He frowned nervously. "What are you doing?" he asked, some of the stress currently attempting to tear every individual fibre of every single muscle free of its neighbours leaking into his voice. Delay from Cafas seeing him, good. Delay from doing as Cafas had said, bad. Being stuck with Persi staring at him in a room with no cover, very bad.
On the other hand, he had to admit that he was already a tiny bit cooler. Of course, with the way his heart was pounding and half of his muscles were twitching, he was sweating as much if not more than before. Man, even with a t-shirt it was kind of hot in here. He dug his fingers into his arm to fight the desire to lift the collar of his shirt away from his skin long enough to get a bit of airflow going. Yes, it was hot, but he'd be fine. "Are you going to stand there forever?"

"How should I know? Up until now, I was quite happily out of this." Considering that he had been subjected, so to speak, to Cafas' abridged life story, Aiden found the idea that Cafas considered Persi to be like him quite odd and extremely curious. Curious enough, in fact that he actually thought about asking Persi which part of the story Aiden had heard fit with his own life.
Unfortunately for his curiosity and fortunate for, well, almost everything else, Persi inserted a well-timed reminder that Cafas was waiting for them just outside the door. And Aiden had to go out there in a t-shirt. An unspoken 'or else,' tinged with heavy miasmas of 'what Persi was getting,' settled back onto his shoulders.
If only that miasma were opaque and visible to everyone else. Then wearing a t-shirt wouldn't be any trouble at all.
He dug his fingers into the cloth. Nothing for it but to suck it up and do it.
...
Of course, the end result wasn't always what was originally intended, and after setting a personal record for hauling off one shirt and putting on the other - all while facing just enough off square away from Persi that his right arm was more hidden, and with his eyes scrunched tight for the few brief seconds he had to pull his sunglasses off for - Aiden found himself still unwilling to turn around, with his arms folded just awkwardly enough that his left forearm covered the part of the scar running along his right forearm while his left hand blocked out the higher portion. He swallowed and hesitantly turned (left side first) towards Persi. He wasn't going out there first. If he had a choice, he wasn't going out there at all. That was the thing, though... he had no choice.

Persi didn't get it. Aiden would have slunk into the corner, except he was already kind of there and it wouldn't have helped anyway. "Cafas dragged me into this because of you, so it's your fault," he said darkly. "You really think I want to be included in your stupid punishment? Why do you have to make teachers mad at you, anyway? And can you please be quiet?"
And why in the world was he stripping down without so much as a muttered warning? Aiden spun around so fast he both nearly gave himself whiplash and just missed slamming his kneecap into the corner of his desk. Maybe he should have. It might have gotten him out of this.
He stared steadfastly at the wall for as long as he could manage. "You idiot, I'm just trying to do what you should have done and not get on his bad side," he hissed once he felt he could trust his voice not to do anything weird. Speaking of getting on Cafas' bad side, though. Aiden glanced towards the drawer that held his now long-unworn t-shirts. He had to... but...
He didn't have a choice, but he couldn't just walk over there, grab a t-shirt and change like Persi was doing. He swallowed. Well, he could walk over. Aiden paused, and then jerked into motion, just missing cracking his knee again. No, actually hitting it would look too much like an intentional attempt to escape. It might be more effective than Persi's attempts, but still. Okay, he was by the drawer. Opening it wasn't hard, was it? No, although it squeaked a bit much for his comfort. There. He could see the t-shirts. He glanced nervously at his arm. There was no getting around it, was there?
With the deepest breath he could take without being super-obvious, Aiden plucked a t-shirt at random off the top of the drawer. It wasn't anything special, just an old faded thing that used to have some city name on it, from a trip with his family however many years back. Might as well. He turned his head slightly, but not enough to actually see Persi. Could he actually do it?

Right sleep. Aiden should probably get some of that too. He didn't get around to moving quite yet, though. He did still have to wash his dishes. And probably think, except since he wasn't drawing or anything, his chocolate pudding rush was getting replaced by exhaustion pretty quickly. He could think later. Or, better, avoid thinking about anything. That sounded safer.
Once Cafas was gone, Aiden slowly pushed himself up from the table and carried the rest of the dirty dishes over to the sink. Pushing the water on without really paying attention, he managed to keep from yawning but not from starting to fall asleep without so much as noticing that the water wasn't hot. There was enough soap to get everything clean anyway, though, so it wasn't as if he was going to be putting dirty dishes away.
By the time he finally finished, Ai was indeed yawning, and yawning every few steps. He made it out of the kitchen, only to realize he'd left the lights on and had to trudge back, shut them off, and then find his way in the dark.
... Probability of coming across anyone else at this hour? Hopefully pretty low. Aiden glanced around just to be safe, and then pushed his sunglasses down enough that he could see over them and get back to his room without killing himself in the dark. He succeeded in that at least, and in avoiding further people, and only put his sunglasses on properly once he reached his own door. He slipped inside as quietly as he could, since talking to Persi was not something he wanted to do right now, and dropped into bed. Sheesh, late nights weren't supposed to be this tiring.

Oh good, Persi had ideas. Aiden already felt better.
Hide somewhere teachers don't go? Where would that be? Aiden didn't have a clue. Sleeping he could... pretend to do, he supposed. Rest would be helpful anyway, after all this stress. He needed to unwind, and most of his normal outlets weren't exactly accessible, given the circumstances.
He definitely couldn't eat right now. He had a feeling his stomach would go on strike or mutiny or something if he tried. Even water was probably off-limits. So... "I guess it'll have to be faking sick," he said weakly. "I can't see anything else coming close to working." So... that left getting back to their room without being noticed. Persi was rather noticeable at the moment. Aiden swallowed and had to look away again. "Any ideas on how to get there unseen?" he asked hopefully. Persi'd had some ideas already. Surely he had more?

And there was the mansion. How foreboding it looked now.
Aiden's gait was quickly approaching something rather similar to a terrified slink the closer they came to the building, and he was full-on creeping once they were actually inside. Behind Cafas, of course. He had enough paranoia and presence of mind to not look freaked out in front of the guy he was trying to keep from getting angry. Barely, in the case of the latter, but enough.
And then he had to walk into his room. With Persi. To get changed.
Wait, since when did he have to get changed with Persi there? Just inside the doorway, he balked. Terror and horror at getting changed in front of Persi? Doom and pain at getting Cafas angry with him? Maybe he should take the d--- no, what was he thinking? He couldn't take doom and pain!
He could get angry at Persi now, though, so as soon as the door closed he rounded on his roommate. Anger beat fear. Yes, that would work for now. "This is all your fault," he hissed, keeping his voice low so as to not be heard by Cafas. Hopefully. "Why'd you have to get me dragged into this? And.. er... sorry about saying you tore the page." Awkwardness quickly replaced his anger and he edged towards his side of the room. "It was all I could think of to try to get you down. I don't want him mad at me too."

Oh. Right. Yeah. Neither of them had actual timekeeping devices on hand. That made things very difficult. Although, if Persi's time estimation was anywhere at all near accurate...
Aiden was already seriously late.
If had had been walking still, he would have stopped now for sure. Now what was he supposed to do? He couldn't go to class late. He just couldn't. But skipping..? No, no, he couldn't that either. The hand wrapped around the battered strap of his backpack tightened on the old fabric. What.... what was he going to do?
He turned towards Persi, his desperation overriding the whole shirtless thing for the current moment. "What am I supposed to do now?" he asked, hopelessly lost. Persi was the delinquent annoying kid. Surely he had some idea of what came next?

Awkward walk was awkward. Persi seemed to be more uncomfortable with the silence than Aiden was. Aiden was definitely more uncomfortable with Persi being topless than Persi was. At least it wasn't bad enough that Aiden couldn't walk properly, since he wasn't actually looking close enough towards Persi to see him being topless. He just knew he was right there, being topless.
Wait, classes? Aiden stopped dead in his tracks.
Oh.
Right.
Class.
He swallowed hard. "What time is it?" he managed to say. Maybe he wasn't actually late yet? Maybe he still had a chance? Except his gut and common sense said otherwise. He'd spent too much time talking to Persi. He was definitely late. If he was late... well, he wasn't going to walk into a class late. No way in hell, frozen or aflame. So. Either he still had time to get to class or he was finding some dark hole to crawl into and die in.

There. Persi had accepted his response. All was well. Persi was going to put his shirt back on, and all would be just peachy. Was he done yet? Please let him be done. Aiden risked a peek.
Nope. Wait. Aiden managed to look for a little bit longer, still sidelong, and looked only at the shirt in Persi's hands. Mostly at the shirt, anyway. It... was inside out? Why was it inside out? Whatever the reason, Persi seemed not to be planning on putting it back on.
The sooner he was away from here, the better, Aiden decided abruptly, and swiftly finished getting everything into his bag. It took a few more moments to get the bag itself closed to some degree of satisfaction, and focusing on fighting with it gave him some cover when Persi went and reminded him that he'd been caught drawing.
Shifting his weight awkwardly as he stood and slung the bag onto one shoulder, looking as far away from Persi as he possibly could without looking like a total rude jerk of an idiot, Aiden tried to find some way to keep from having to answer. His brain didn't want to work properly, though. It didn't give him anything, and Persi was waiting for an answer. So, looking away more in shyness than in general inability to look at Persi's partial nudity, he finally spoke. "Nothing, really," he said awkwardly. "Just.. this." He gestured at the trees and whatnot around them, though his hand was rather limp and he didn't even look where he was gesturing. Enough with the talking, please! Couldn't they just get out of here without anything else going wrong?

... Stupid life.
Well, if life tried to be stupid and unhealthy like that, he'd just have to work harder to keep it from succeeding. Maybe he could stay in this place for the rest of his life. Isabel probably wouldn't come here... would she?
Wait, this Aura person was worse than Isabel? How was that even possible? At least she wouldn't wear a giant bow, though, right? Aiden swallowed and doodled an abstract splotchy thing in the last remains of pudding. If she hadn't been distracted with Allison, there was probably no way he could have gotten away from Isabel. How was he supposed to get away if he came across her again, or if he ran into Aura? Especially Aura, if she was worse. He wouldn't even have the warning of recognizing a distinctive appearance as almost-certainly-lethal!
Right. Aiden had kind of forgotten about the X-men. And that this was where they lived. Hey, there was a lot going on right now. He was allowed to let some things slide on by. Still, remembering that they were around was reassuring, even if he wasn't entirely sure they were doing the right thing. At the very least, they didn't go around killing people. They were plenty public about being around to protect people. He took a deep breath and tried to relax. Right. This place was safe. Probably, according to Cafas. That really didn't help, that bit. Smart, sneaky serial killers were always the most dangerous, weren't they? Because they could keep killing and killing and killing without ever getting caught or even suspected. Still, overall he did feel a lot better about the whole thing. "Thanks," he said quietly.

Cafas' voice behind him started out being about as stressful as everything else that was going on right now, but for once things turned out okay. There were worse things than Persi wasting his time, though. Persi getting him dragged into this? Definitely one of them. Ending up (probably wrongly) accusing Persi of damaging one of his books? Also included. Even if that part was still Persi's fault in the end. Ai still felt really bad about it.
No, wait. Scratch that on the stressful part. Come on, he wasn't that hot! He'd survive!
Probably. And now it was a matter of hiding his scars or almost certainly making Cafas angry by refusing to do as he was told.
Persi had better be real sorry about this, and show it real well the first chance he got. And he wasn't making a good start on that part, although in terms of keeping Cafas' anger focused on him he was right on track. Throwing a pinecone? Really? Cafas had a distinct point. Pinecones didn't really hurt anyone, unless you managed to get them in the eye or somehow gash them up. Even Aiden had taken worse - say, a soccer ball to the face - without reacting like Persi was probably hoping for.
Well, it served Persi right. So did getting dragged all the way back to the mansion, for that matter, even if Aiden was just as reluctant to go back. Possibly more reluctant. He really, really didn't want to, but Cafas said so and it was unimprovably clear just what happened to people who disobeyed a direct order from Cafas. Sure, Persi magnified any punishment he got by being, well, Persi, but even a lesser version couldn't possibly be better than letting them see his scars, right? At least it would be just them, and not everyone, but still... he really, really, really didn't want to. But he had to. Was there no way out of this?

Aiden wasn't expecting Cafas to actually fall over. Sure, the thought had crossed his mind when he started leaning back in his chair, but generally adult people who did that knew what they were doing and had no issues staying upright. "Are - are you okay?" he asked hurriedly and starting to rise from his own (properly balanced) chair, but relaxed and settled back down as Cafas started to laugh. There hadn't been a loud enough thunk for him to have brain damage and be laughing from blunt-trauma-induced insanity, surely.
"I have no intention of going anywhere near her again," he said. Aiden really didn't get more serious than he was now. The name Aura seemed about as familiar as Isabel's face had before he made the connection between news reports and actual flesh-and-blood individual. Another infamous murderer? "I've never paid much attention to the news, but the name does sound familiar." At any rate, someone else he didn't want anything at all to do with.
While they were on the topic of dangerous people, though... it had been on his mind now and then, ever since running into Allison and Isabel. "There aren't people like that here, are there?" he asked quietly, not quite looking straight at Cafas in his nervousness at actually voicing the concern. If there were, there was nowhere else he could go, but could he really stay here?

So... they were desperate for people? Didn't sound so promising, but then the source material promised nothing but horribleness. It was only appropriate that anything spawned of it would be little improved, if at all.
It made Aiden feel a lot better, somehow, that Cafas agreed with him about Sanctuary. It did make him wish that Allison wasn't living there, but it was her choice and surely she knew what she was doing. She must have connections there that kept her safe. Aiden deliberately avoided thinking about the way she had called to Isabel and spoken with her. Allison probably had connections with other people there who could help protect her from the people like Isabel.
Although maybe his early thought about her had been right, if Sanctuary was actually in gang territory.
Wait, he'd been in gang territory? Seriously? No way. That only happened in movies and books and things. It didn't happen in real life. Did it? And he'd survived to escape. That was starting to sound way better than it originally had. A gang powerful enough to house someone like Isabel and protect her from the police, as Cafas said, and Aiden had walked in and (run) out without so much as a scratch?
Huh. Apparently his morale gauge wasn't broken, it was just sitting at zero up until now. It was still close, but still. He wasn't quite sure, but he did kind of wish it had been broken. The fact that he had actually been that down that the little boost that came from hearing he'd escaped from a total death chamber of mafia-level doom made a noticeable difference was kind of depressing all on its own.
"A woman with a really oversized bow, like she was heading to an anime convention or something." Despite the bow making most of the immediate impression, it was probably going to be impossible to completely forget her name now. "Isabel."
