The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"Yeah..." Aiden abruptly coughed. "Being useful. Not working at a museum." He was delightfully eloquent today. Might be a personal best.
... Actually, it might be. Ouch.
"Hey! I always thought that know-it-alls were people who only thought they knew everything and shoved it in everyone else's faces. You don't do that, so how can you really be a know-it-all?" Nice going. He didn't sound like a braindead, utterly naïve little kid at all.
.... Evelyn could use sai? .... back to being the most useless person around, instead of just being tied for least combative. And he was pretty sure people could be talked to death, if only by talking so much that you drove them insane or distracting them from something lethal. Like some comically large, heavy object on a set trajectory. Because those were so practical unless you monologued at someone until they went splat.

Aiden had had food. That made this a good day. Cafas was standing outside his door. That made this a far more debatable day.
Fortunately for avoiding self-embarrassment, he didn't have any food left. Unfortunately, he couldn't hide behind anything, and was stuck nodding to Cafas and hoping he was just looking for Persi. Things never turned out well when people went looking for him.
And Cafas was looking for him. Hopefully it was short and insignificant and not to make him do something -
Oh. Congratulations? Really? That was awkward. How was he supposed to respond to congratulations? Cafas had his hand out. Okay, he could shake hands. That wasn't too bad. He knew how to shake hands. He did that, and thought that maybe he didn't suck at it too badly. He was aware that it was possible to suck at shaking hands. There were people in his previous school that liked talking about how you had to have a firm grip and be confident or no one would take you seriously. Aiden just tried to not make it look like he had no clue what was going on.
"Oh. It... didn't come up." Very good. Look like he was a creeper who hid things instead of just way too paranoid to let people know things. They were so very different, after all. And Cafas was completely right, of course. A couple of cheap blunt swords weren't exactly useful doing x-men-y stuff, and they weren't the sort of organization who would provide better ones. Plus he had found out exactly how annoying it was to be creative with them. Rapiers did not make good multipurpose tools. "That... would be good," he allowed, while inwardly really really really really really really unsure about agreeing to extra training with Cafas.

Being told to take a deep breath wasn't a good -
"It'll be over before you know it. You know, the thing about the X-men these days is, if you show up on your own you're a vigilante, if you show up in a team and fancy suits, you are a superhero team. So. Stay back, look professional, and act on your best judgment if sh*t gets out of hand."
Over. Before he knew it. Quite possible, because if it took anywhere near as long as it felt his brain might just explode. Or maybe it had already, and he just hadn't noticed. Maybe he should go with that. It was marginally better than screaming like a little girl. He wasn't doing that, fortunately. Yet.
Oh, solid ground! Wonderful wonderful solid ground! Please, someone, anyone, keep that from ever happening ever again. Ever. Really. Ever. Fortunately, he kept his balance and didn't start kissing the ground - it was, honestly, standard filthy, disgusting city ground - and the cruel X-man who had dragged him here was busy talking to a cop, so he was safe. Mostly.
Okay. Somewhere he could see inside. He could do that. If he was looking inside, then he was outside. Outside was good and safe. Good for backup. Backup was good outside. Yup, staying outside was fine, just fine. He even managed to walk over to the bank and creep at the windows without slinking like the terrified coward he totally was. Ohgodtherewereabunchofpeopleonthefloor. He tried to make it look at least a little bit like he was just glancing back at everyone, not just flinching away from the sight in case they were all dead.

"You tried out too?" Well, that either made him feel way better about trying out himself or reeeaaaalllly insecure. It kind of stretched his brain almost to the point of hurting to try to figure out which. He should just go with feeling better. He wasn't the only one, right? And from what he knew about Evelyn (despite her totally terrifying outburst a moment ago, which would totally freak any run-of-the-mill villain into surrendering immediately, no question about it), she wasn't a particularly combative person, so it wasn't all about beating things up.
Not that he had really thought that it was, but he had his worries. Occasionally. Possibly frequently. Or maybe constantly. Oh, she had a good point. "Yeah... I would kind of rather know who not to accidentally insult ahead of time," he said with a fairly well-balanced mixture of meekness and attempted humour. "Since being hated or dead doesn't really help with, er, teamwork very well." Not that he was a team player, or ever had been, but it was better than nothing.

Bank robbery. Routine.
Maybe for other people. Not for him. Sooooo not for him.
Had he even been inside an actual bank anyway? He could only ever remember tagging along to ATMs with his parents.
Right. Just back up. Just in case. You know, to call in the people who could actually do something while things were falling apart. Yeah. He could do that. He could push buttons and emit occasionally intelligible sound, couldn't he? Exactly. Yeah. This would work. Aiden kept telling himself that the entire time he was away and getting ready, changing into something somewhat more professional than old clothes that might as well be pyjamas (he had been thinking about sleeping, okay?) and strapping on the belt that supported the two batons he was gradually getting the hang of. Their balance wasn't bad, but it was such a different kind of balance that he was used to. And the grip was different. That was probably the most annoying thing.
Except then he was back and the girl was waiting and holding out a hand. Say what? Oooh he really wasn't looking forward to this, but he took her hand anyway and tried not to hope for the best, because that would inevitably lead to thinking about what wasn't the best.

He... he didn't have to apologize? What was she talking about? Of course he had to! He messed up big time! Apologizing was what normal, rational people did as soon as they realized that they had done something like that. He might not be normal by most standards - social or species - but he did hope people considered him at least a little rational.
He was trying really hard to not mess up again, though, so he kept his mouth shut about that. "I.. I am trying," he offered carefully. "I mean, that is why I tried out for the x-men." He flipped the sunglasses around a bit more, and then shoved them into his pocket. "Um... if you don't mind my asking... how.. how did you hear about that anyway? It's not like it was all that long ago or anything..."
Were people really talking about him already? That was worrying. He knew that more people would know more about him and all, and he'd (mostly) come to grips with that, but actually talking about him to each other? What were they saying? Were they laughing about all the ways he'd messed up, or the giant gaping holes he needed to work on? Like being able to do more than poke things, and probably having a mental breakdown if he had to actually hit a real person and cause damage. It had been bad enough learning to spar with people.

Aiden might not be a social genius, but it didn't take very many points in that category to realize he had screwed up bad.
It wasn't hard to realize exactly where either, although Evelyn was making that very clear. Now would be a very good time to have a mutation that would allow him to just melt into the floor and stop existing. Wait, there was an abbreviation for that. KMN. Yes. Very appropriate to this situation, and it was entirely his fault.
By the time she stopped, he wasn't quite cowering, but there was definitely a certain meekness to the way he hung his head and shrank in on himself. Hopefully that was a big enough sign screaming 'sorry! sorry! sorry!' since there was no freaking way he was going to interrupt her right now.
He held still for a few moments after Evelyn moved off, more than a little terrified that she was going to start off again. He'd deserve that too; he in no way doubted that. He wasn't completely sure that his sunglasses deserved to get thrown around, but pointing that out would be quite obviously bad. Why couldn't he think ahead like this before he messed up like that? Come on. At her last words, he hesitantly crept forwards to reclaim his sunglasses, but just held them for a moment, slowly flipping the arms open and closed. "I'm... sorry," he said quietly, now not making eye contact for a completely different reason than before. "I.. I didn't think. I, uh.. I forget that there are a lot of people with things worse than me."

Go swimming. Really. That was her suggestion. It was not impressive. At all. Really, swimming. "Have you ever actively tried keeping your mind off something?" he asked flatly. "The more you try to distract yourself, the more you think about it." Personal experience was a wonderfully horrid thing. "I've been there." And it did work eventually, but she didn't need to know that.
Even if he did give in and just do as she told him to do, he wanted to at least have his sunglasses, though. They were safe, and safe was lacking around here. And in the world in general. The world was not a safe place. It never had been, but it did definitely seem to be getting darker and nastier these past few months. Was that just him paying more attention, though? His attention had definitely been stretched beyond his little hometown, no matter how much he tried to keep his head down and just get by in here.

There were sometimes it would be nice to just sleep, and then there were times that certain roommates were way too annoying for that to happen.
Like today. Drawing Aiden's eye was not a good idea at any time, much less while he was trying to sleep. Why couldn't people get that? It wasn't even as if he could sleep with one eye open, which would at least allow some people to assume that the whole deal could work... but anyway, Persi was annoying, so Aiden had left.
And ended up in the living room for a lack of other places to be. At least it was empty; that was a nice change. He'd had some awkward conversations in this place. But for now things were good and quiet, so he sprawled on the couch and flicked the TV on for some background noise.
And then the TV's sound evidently covered up someone's approach, because there was someone talking to him. He twisted around and blinked. Oh, that was - um. Someone familiarish. Couldn't remember the name. He probably should remember it. Seemed like he should. "Um, yeah?" he said hesitantly. Yeah, if she knew his name, he really should remember hers--
Oh. Wait, what?
He wasn't expecting to get dragged to a bank robbery. Well, he expected something along those lines would crop up eventually, but really. Now? Not that he was arguing with a girl with a bow. Didn't seem too bright. Yeah, he just nodded meekly and did as he was told. And tried not to think about what was about to happen.

... Did he say something... funny? Aiden blinked at Evelyn. Why was she laughing? Seriously. What was going on?
At least she seemed to be willing to explain. Didn't have to be outgoing and social? Curious. Everyone always said that successful people had to be outgoing and social. There was something specific he could retort to, though. "That's not true," he said quickly. "I can fight without them. I- it's not as obvious then..." he trailed off. Maybe it wasn't as effective an argument as it had sounded in his head. Out loud it sounded pretty sad.
Her suggestion was intimidating enough to distract him, though. "Ignore them? For an entire day?" But... but... how was he supposed to do that? Really? He wasn't distracted enough to keep from wincing at the mention of funerals, though. He knew she was joking.. and she didn't know. Knowing that didn't keep him from rubbing the scar running along his arm, though. He'd managed to stop covering that for the most part, if spurred by common sense about preventing heat exhaustion. Could he extend that?

Hey! He was trying not to make himself miserable. He was getting a lot better at it too. He might still have room for improvement, but he at least didn't consciously think he was a pathetic bag of uselessness. This time his glance caught Evelyn's eyes shifting. Oh. Well, at least both of hers changed at the same time?
He sighed. He really didn't want people to think he was lying or blind, even if he was effectively blind in the dark, and he had enough other reasons not to be tough without people assuming other things on top of them...
She did not need to mention accidents, though. It wasn't as if his scars were invisible. They freaking glittered.
And now for the subject changes. Yippee. And that. Of course. Did she really have to bring that up right now? He fidgeted. "Yeah..." he muttered. "I'm just not an outgoing person, okay?" Okay, that was an impressive overstatement.

Evelyn's eyes changed colour? Aiden blinked at that, startled into looking at her again, and for longer. They didn't look unusual to him. He scuffed one shoe against the floor awkwardly. If they did change, though, that would probably mostly explain her reaction. Probably. He wasn't so sure about the sewer people stuff, though. Did people, even mutants, really live in sewers? And he supposed it would be worse to have giant claws than it was to have weird eyes. Harder to hide and harder to do everything; he could just imagine them catching on everything.
"I guess..." Aiden sighed a little. Even if part of him knew she was right, he couldn't just change the entire way he acted or felt about his mismatched eyes. Not all at once, and he wasn't convinced that just knowing Evelyn was right would actually change anything at all. "It's just... well..." He tried glancing at Evelyn again but couldn't hold it. "I just... I don't want people staring at me, and I guess... I guess I'd rather they think I'm weird and wonder why then know why." He shrugged and shifted again. Talking really wasn't his strong suit at the best of times.

Aiden stilled at Evelyn's words - okay, froze, but not out of terror. Really! He was much too busy trying to work out just what she meant.
She... didn't care? At all? Seriously? Then why the looking everywhere else? Did... did it really not bother her? Aiden shifted. Aversion and disgust he got. He could understand that. Not getting around to reacting in the middle of a match, a bit more of a stretch but still understandable. Not realizing that that particular part of a shifting colouration wasn't as temporary as the rest, that was quite understandable.
But just not caring? That undermined a lot of what Aiden felt. If people really weren't going to react, was there really a reason to wear sunglasses all the time, to stumble around in the dark just because he was hungry in the middle of the night but might very well run into someone again?
... It would certainly be convenient to not wear sunglasses at night. He shifted, not quite daring to look at her, just in case he was wrong about what she said, what she meant. "It... doesn't bother you?" he asked hesitantly, somewhere along the line managing to at least glance at her for more than a fifty thousandth of a millisecond.

He wasn't sure if it were better or worse than staring, the way Evelyn was looking everywhere but at him. Why oh why did this have to happen? Why couldn't he have just not lost his sunglasses, left them on his face where they belonged, not had to deal with all of this?
What? Oh, Eevee-lady was ta- wait, she remembered seeing him with them? As she turned back to him, eyes darkening, he flinched away and tried to figure out which bookshelf she was pointing at. Why did people always think that pointing made everything clear? He couldn't see his sunglasses on any of them.
He was paying a little bit more attention when she spoke again, and stared at his feet awkwardly. Sure, repeat that old story when she couldn't even stand to see it herself. How was that for good advice? She might as well suggest that he not wear clothes all the time. He shifted awkwardly. "I'd really rather," he muttered.
