The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Slightly bewildered, Evelyn finished her cereal, tidied up the dishes and headed back towards her room to get dressed. The residual effects from this mornings 'reboot' had faded, and now she was just her normal, slightly awkward, self.
Her bathing suit was easy enough to find, and she got dressed in the turquoise bikini. It was fairly new, with pale silver strings and one of the skirted bottom pieces with a little blue bow on the side. Somewhat cute, somewhat attractive, and fitting for her personality. Her skin was pale enough she didn't have any awkward tan lines at least, and her stomach was as flat as always, so she didn't have to worry about that. That didn't mean she didn't feel odd wandering through the school in the outfit though. So she grabbed a towel and tossed on a tank-top before heading towards the front door.
The halls were empty, and it was still early so she didn't know why she was so worried. Her flip flops sounded loud though, and she was glad when she made it to the door and only had to look for Gawain. She had enough time to wonder if she should have put her hair up. She felt silly. Maybe she should have at least braided it...
The echoes started debating whether the picture on the wall was crooked or not.

Evelyn was laying facedown in the sewer. and at the moment, she could have been happier than to just stay there and breathe. Her legs hurt, her knees hurt, her arm hurt and so did her pride. The fear that flooded her mind hadn't quite faded away, but it left a wake of trembling behind. She wasn't sure she could have walked out of here if she wanted to. That was without her own personal boogieman sitting at the base of the stairs.
In the corner of her eyes she saw the hungry monster tearing into the food at the sewer entrance. Teeth flashed, a reminder of what could have happened only moments before. She could still hear his animal-like words, and as much as she wanted to just play it off as nothing, she couldn't. So she pulled her knees up close and set her chin on them watching the teen settle back with a defeated posture.
"You told me you were a monster. But we also knew my sense of danger was broken." She gave a weak smile, and tried to stop her arms from shaking. She didn't feel particularly convincing, but she hadn't felt that way the first time when they met either, and she hadn't been chased through the sewer prior. The echoes flickered around the room, taking note of her surroundings. There were claw shaped gouges in the wall, tears in her clothing, and her pale silver hair had a grimy quality to it now. But she was alive.

The light from the manhole barely illuminated the tunnels. It traced the outline of her monster companions face, caught traces of color from his hair and his eyes, eyes that weren't seeing her as a person. Eyes that saw her as a thing. As food. With one wrong movement, he could cut her clean open. His claws sliced through rocks. How much easily would they harm her? He could probably smell the blood on her arm, and the pressure on her arm kept her still. There was no running now. She was never very good at running anyway.
But then... there was a flicker. Something beneath the surface only someone with echoes like she had could sense. He was in there. That mutant kid who thought he was a monster. That mutant kid she tried to convince otherwise. It was a flicker, but it was enough. In a moment of fear she threw caution aside and let the echoes help form her thoughts.
"It's Evelyn! I was here, before. I was the nosy lady who followed you when you had chips. You told me you could kill me, I told you that you didn't strike me as the murderous rage sort. You still don't. Your still the kid I found munching chips on the inside, still the kid who helped a little girl. Look, I brought food. Lasagna, like I promised. You're hungry? Ok, eat the food." She waited, watched, let the echoes feed off his movements, the shift in pressure as he held her against the ground. While she still believed he was in there, somewhere, there was something different about her now he might not remember.
She was afraid. She probably could have run if she wanted to. Her hand shook under his and she waited for him to snap, shut her up for good.
"You told me to work on my sense of danger. I was dumb and didn't listen very well." It was almost an apology. There was regret in there. "I didn't want to make you right. I just...didn't want to be afraid of you." Her voice cracked. She felt helpless, she felt terrified, and she felt guilty for both. She wanted to help him feel like he was still a little normal. Instead she was staring at the beast he said he was. She didn't want to believe. But fear was tainting her thoughts.

The echoes took note of the color on Gawain's cheeks before he leaned and his lips pressed against her forehead. It was such a simple gesture, but one she was growing to appreciate. There was something sweet about it; it was a gesture that showed he cared. She was a spoiled little rich kid with voices in her head, but he still cared. It felt... reassuring.
"A matter of statistics... well I never thought of it that way before." She admitted with a slight chuckle, returning his smile and taking a sip of some orange juice. She was glad she finished swallowing before he continued though, because it would have ruined the moment if she choked on her drink in surprise. she still blink a little in confusion, tilting her head to the side.
"Yeah, I have one. Why?" She heard there was a pool here, so she made sure to pick up a new one just in case. She rarely got the chance to swim, so it had been something she looked forward to but never got around to. She had at least washed it and taken the tags off though.

For a normal person, getting chased through the sewers by a monster would be scary enough. For Evelyn, it was tenfold. Her echoes brought everything to life, and gave in a new dimension. In the few seconds it took to run, the pace of her thoughts pointed out every tiny detail of her pursuer. Every impact of blade to rock, every slice of the earth, every satisfied smirk. The voice, with it's taunting nature and sinister edge. She glanced back, eyes taking in the form almost upon her. It didn't look like the mutant kid she knew. It was every essence of the sewer monster rumors spoke of. Hungry, animal, taking pride in his hunt. She was just a dumb girl whose curiosity landed was becoming her undoing.
Her foot clipped one of the rocks he dislodged earlier and she went crashing to the ground with a painful slam. It stung her legs, ripped a hole in the knee of her jeans and would reveal a number of stunning bruises in the morning. Unless he killed her. Then those bruises would never appear.
She lifted her head, light light of the exit just up ahead. She could still see the bag with the food she had brought, still feel the rungs of the ladder in her memories. She tried getting to her feet but she was too slow, too late.

Evelyn shifted the spoon in her hand at Gawain's question, and looked at the milk in her cereal. The cinnamon swirled for a moment, and she looked up, giving a small sad smile to her companion.
"Honestly... Everything. Every memory I have from the time I was 13 in just mixed together, and I don't really get a choice what I remember... Some nights I get to sit and watch a movie over again I haven't seen since I was 14, other nights I have to get injured all over again. I don't...forget. So there is a large variety to my playbacks...
Two nights ago, I dreamed I was sitting in the park reading a book. Still know what page I was on, all the words... My thumb was covering up part of the word 'mystery' when a lady and her poodle walked past. It had a leaf stuck in it's fur, right behind the bow she'd put in it's hair. Silly things, like that. And then...Not so silly things. Jensen got shot once, we were walking home from a movie and someone jumped us. He was protecting me... First night I woke up with nightmares here, that was what I saw. It never feels like a memory. It feels like I'm there."
She pushed the cereal around in her bowl, and shrugged a little, thoughtfully. "Sometimes I don't mind the playbacks, really. I get to relive some of my favorite memories. I can see all my favorite sunsets again, draw all my favorite pictures. And then sometimes, I hate them. I wake up cold, or I wake up hurt. I guess you can't have one without the other... There is good news though." She looked up, and gave a little shy smile to Gawain. "I do have a lot of better memories to look forward to since I met you."

The texture of the wall of the sewer was sticky, like the inside of an aquarium. There was the faint slime from moisture, mildew perhaps, and dirt mingled with other sewage clinging to the surface. She could feel the uneven bumps under her fingers, the slight rise and fall of brick, the grouting work, and the slight curve of the walls. Her hair would be covered in that same grime when she got out of here, the white locks flatted between her back and the wall. She tried to focus on that wall, tried to hide from the noises drawing closer and the very real pursuit she was facing. This wasn't the danger room. If something happened, she was alone, and she didn't know if anyone would ever find her.
"Evelyn..."
Or what was left of her. She trembled, frozen by fear as the voice hissed in the darkness. The echoes read more in that hiss than she ever wanted to know. Suddenly, getting out of here seemed like a very faint if. There were violent intentions in those echoes. Something hungry. Something animal.
She couldn't sense the mutant kid she had encountered before. Maybe he was really gone now. She found it hard to think, her thoughts sporadic and confused. She could hear the movements, crawling forward in a predatory manner. Slow, taunting, tail flicking with too much pride in the hunt. He was the stronger mutant here, bred in the darkness, while she had nothing but the voices in her head to defend herself with.
"Game over."
She heard him pounce and dove back down the tunnels, felling claws clip her arm as she scrambled past. She screamed, racing back towards the familiar pathways and ignoring the sting from her arm. She wouldn't make it, there was no way she could outrun him...her eyes stung with tears but she kept running. It was the only thing she could do.
The wasn't time to beat herself up for carelessly coming here like this. Nor was there time to dwell on her mistake. The echoes were spurred into action by her fear, and like several times before, her powers responded to her desperation. The memories of the tunnels and their directions stuck out in her mind, and she tried to keep a straight path towards the exit. She could hear the breathing, the unnatural noises of claws on rocks, the occasional flick of a tail somewhere behind. [Left. Primary escape cut off, circle back.] She didn't want to circle anywhere, but the sounds of rocks and earth hitting the ground behind her made her blindly obedient to her powers.
He flanked her, and voice sent a chill back down her spine as it called out from the darkness. He wasn't talking about the food she brought. He was talking about her.
She hit an unfamiliar path and her brain scrambled to remember locations of manhole covers she'd seen on the streets above. They had passed the exit she intended to go towards, but there was another intersection up ahead maybe she could reach. She was blind, though. Her echoes relied mostly on sight, and there was nothing to see. Her hearing was average, and the tunnels echoed unnaturally and threw her off. She turned where she thought she heard an opening, and clipped her shoulder against the wall, yelping in pain. Blind eyes looked for light in the darkness as she pressed her back against the wall, listening for her pursuer. She had to double back. She couldn't see anything, and the echoes waiting.
It was silent in her mind.
It was the most terrifying silence she had ever encountered.
Evelyn blinked quickly at his suggestion, and then gave a quick and slightly embarrassed shake of her head. "Oh, I'm fine walking. I actually rather prefer having both feet on the ground. Thanks for the offer though." She was starting to feel less worried about offending her companion though. He seemed like he was in far too good of spirits to be discouraged at this point.
It seemed that much more evident as he continued talking about the arcade and pizza. The echoes flickered and picked out the questions as she followed along beside him. "Pizza is always nice. I don't eat it a lot but I enjoy it. And I really don't know what games I'd like... I'd have to try something first..." She wondered what she was getting herself into at this point. She glanced at the clock on her phone and wondered how long she could let this adventure go before her handler came looking for her.
And now she was always going to feel like a horse when she said that. Bodyguard...from now on, the man would just be a bodyguard...
Something definitely didn't feel right. The voice... The way it twisted the sentence as it carried down the tunnels. It was taunting, in a way. She followed a few more steps, listening as he transitioned towards the ceiling, claws clacking louder as they dug in to hold him to the wall. He was moving fast, and she felt herself slow, trying to process what was happening.
The voice....[Different from previous encounters. Intense. Hungry?] It was like something else was in control. Something she had been warned about.
"You may not see me as a monster, but I'll become one eventually. You don't know the whole story of my mutation."
She wanted to believe that kid was still somewhere inside him. She wanted to tell herself he was just trying to be funny, teach her a lesson for not being afraid the first time. But something in the voice sent a chill down her spine. Around her, the smell of sewage clung to her nose. The sounds of claws on rocks rattled and echoes, seeming louder the more nervous the got. She couldn't see. Not the rocks in front of her, not her shirt, not the liquid mix of water and who knows what other grime under her feet. She was feeling very far from home.
Your luck will run out sometime
She knew the way out. She could run. Her memories would show her the tunnels she'd already been through, and the exit wasn't too far away. But the crisscrossing tunnels in her mind made her realize he could easily loop around behind her and cut her off. She backed up a few steps towards the wall, and tried not to panic. A feeling was starting to settle in her gut she wasn't used to though.
Fear.
She ran, and let the echoes seek out the sounds of the monster she was certain would be in pursuit.
Evelyn let out a light laugh and grabbed the milk out of the fridge. She picked up the orange juice as well, and set both jugs on the table while Gawain got the dishes. "To be honest, neither am I. The echoes tend to make it hard to concentrate on what I'm cooking sometimes, so it was always hit and miss whether the meal worked out or not." She tried not to be too relieved as she sank into one of the chairs and glanced at their supplies. There were a few varieties of cereal, and Evelyn abandoned the toast idea for now. The headache medicine was starting to kick in, but the memories moving through her head felt sharper than normally today, and the stray ones were giving her trouble still. That wasn't fairly unusual though. Mornings always took a little time for everything to settle in her head, today was no exception.
"Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Someone bough the name brand stuff! We're eating in style now!" Evelyn said with a grin, pouring herself a decent bowl and watching the cinnamon swirl around as she added milk. She took a few bites, and tried not to flinch as a stray memory sent pain through her shoulder. The distracting images of pictures and museum patrons were easy enough to brush off. It was the other memories that were harder to ignore. She fiddled with her spoon a little though, and tried to think of something to talk about.
"So...what are you up to today?" She took another bite, echoes noting the nutrition facts (or lack there of) on the box in front of her.
Her companions remark made her smile a little, and ease the tension that had set in a bit. She gave a little shrug and chuckled slightly. "Lie detection is a tricky thing. The echoes are decent at it, but nothing is 100 percent accurate all the time. Reading people involves a lot of deduction. You piece together clues and then build the most logical conclusion from what you know. That's why polygraph have to be reconducted---I'm rambling again."
She stopped herself, and gave a firm shake of her head to clear her thoughts. The television transitioned to an infomercial about a new computer, and the echoes noted the specs that were displayed. The graphics were decent, but the audio could be better... She tuned it out again, focusing on the teen.
"Well, I guess we have something in common. I don't always do well with people either, and being tired seems to make it awkward for both of us." She put her sketchbook on her knees, and glanced at the television. "Maybe the school has a movie or something we could put in? If you can't sleep, may as well stop yourself from being too bored?" She suggested.
The echoes caught the sound of movement, drawing Evelyn's attention down one of the tunnels. She couldn't see anything in the darkness, but the faint scratching of claws on rock was familiar. She paused, leaving her bag on the floor with the food still in it. She was fairly certain she had been spotted, especially when she heard the faint whisper echo through the room.
"Food..."
"Hello? I promised I'd bring lasagna... It's Evelyn, you know... Sherlock..." She felt dumb calling into the darkness, but there was little else she could do unless the sewer monster came forward. He was far faster than she was, and if he didn't want to be seen, it seemed unlikely she could catch him. Her curiosity drew her forward though, footsteps light on the sewer floors. For the moment, the paths were familiar enough she could navigate by memory, letting the echoes follow the sounds of footsteps. The echoes, however, flickered a warning.
[Footsteps, louder than previously.] That seemed odd... She didn't have long to wonder about it though as she turned a corner, pausing as she came to a new path and struggled to find her way forward. She didn't understand why the sewer mutant would run away like this. Then again, last time he'd pinned her against the rocks when she wasn't looking.
She felt herself pause in the doorway, taking a small step backwards. It was a faint moment of caution, but the alarms were starting to flicker in her head. Something just didn't feel right. She wished she had thought to bring a flash light or something to defend herself with.
Syn's response to Evelyn's statement took her by surprise, the echoes flickering slightly in shock. There had been little warning the dark haired woman would respond as she had, but Evelyn was forced to mentally backpedal and asses what had been said. Syn honestly believed Evelyn was... special? Fascinating? It was clear in her facial expressions, her posture, her movement. While initially, Evelyn had been a bit intimidated by the female, she was starting to see something new. Syn, as dangerous as she might be, had a strong view of her fellow mutants. A positive one, in it's own way.
"I... I guess so few people seem to share your viewpoint, I've felt more inclined to share their own. My mutation was always something to 'cure'. 'Talent' is a term I've only recently started to embrace." She shrugged, and pushed her hair from her face.
She caught the wink, and chuckled slightly, shaking her head as her shoulders relaxed a bit. "Fair enough."
Evelyn had been fairly good about staying out of trouble recently. At least, she'd like to think she had been. Most of her 'adventures' as of late hadn't been the immediate result of her curiosity. Chaotic danger room fiasco? Sam's fault. Getting knocked unconscious by her own powers? Accident. And running into Syn at the mall had been merely coincidence, so it seemed fitting for her to take a trip downtown, fresh pan of lasagna in a bag on her hip, in an effort to locate her recent sewer monster acquaintance. She had promised to drop off food sometime, after all, and now seemed as good a time as ever. The city was calm, it wasn't too late in the evening, and she figured no one at the mansion would miss her. Getting a taxi was easy enough, then she just had to find the right place to leave the food where the wrong person couldn't find it.
She found the sewer entrance nearest to her apartment, and with a bit of effort pulled the manhole cover free. The echoes didn't pick up much movement at first, so she clambered down into the darkness, blinking and letting her memories guide her. She knew where the sewer monster's old home had been, but he had been determined to find somewhere new to stay. In the dim light, it was hard to pick out anything else though, so she set down her bag, and glanced around. If she left it here, she wasn't sure the kid would find it.
"Anyone home?" She finally called out. Her voice echoed eerily, and the echoes followed the noises down the tunnels. The dank smell was sharp in her nose, faint traces of sewage standing out and dripping distantly from one of the inlets. She resisted the urge to push her hair from her face. She should have put a scrunchy on at least. Wandering forward a few steps, she listened, uncertain what she would find, but lacking the fear that probably would have kept her safe.
