The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

All's fair. Well if that wasn't filled with all sorts of foreboding... The instructed the echoes to be extra vigilant watching for warning signs of tickling in the future. Well, tried to. The echoes were trying to guess which way the leaf in the middle of the pool would spin next. It was like trying to set a guard dog to watch a room filled with food. But then, they moved back to Gawain, and she caught something in his glance that made the pink color her cheeks even more. His next remark brought her color right to a full deep shade of red.
"I uh...I really...I'm not that attractive...." She muttered sheepishly. Evelyn stopped flattening her hair with her hands and looked at the mirror-walker then fiddled with the ends of her hair shyly.
"I mean, I got a few compliments, but....I guess I just don't always believe it." She felt much more like the nervous mutant who he asked out in the first place. She could read a lot of things. For some reason, the whole relationship stuff tripped her up.

By the time Gawain came up from the water, Evelyn was breathless from giggling. Her cheeks were pink, and her hair had definitely seen better days. She felt like a drowned mouse with her hair sticking to her back and shoulders. She was happy, and mad at him at the same time. It was a good mad though. Perhaps 'playfully annoyed' was the proper terminology.
"Brat." She huffed, trying and failing to resist a smile. She crossed her arms across her chest and stuck her tongue out, the taste of chlorine clinging to her lips. His sly grin was cute though, and she couldn't help smiling back.
As her pulse settled back down, Evelyn quickly checked the knot of her bathing suit to make sure it hadn't loosened during the scuffle, then pulled her hair back to one side. She blinked at Gawain's comment then waggled a finger at him warningly. "Hey, I say using that new information gives you an unfair advantage. Foul play." She scooted backwards one more step and the echoes followed her gaze looking for any sigh he'd start again. Hands up or not, she wouldn't have put it past him to try.

>> "Last time I got an upgrade, I was killed by a bunch of orcs."
"Sounds unfortunate. Maybe I'll keep the legs." She said calmly, and maintained her blank expression. She did take a slight step backwards, though, as he started moving in. A bit of her shy demeanor made her playfulness waver, and she glanced behind her, realizing there wasn't very much room to move. The echoes flickered, scrambling to guess what he was going to do.
Apparently, not surrender.
The splash caught her by surprise and while she was still wiping water from her face he attacked. Evelyn let out a squeal of laughter and back pedaled away away from the unexpected tickling, still half-way blinded by her own hair. "Hey that's not--" Squeak. "Fair! I'm ticklish! Cheater!" She swatted at him, which was mostly ineffective considering she was laughing too hard to aim. The rest of her attempted threats were buried in giggles.
The echoes located Gawain about the same time the rest of her did. Unfortunately, at that point he had already grabbed her and she only halfway held her breath before she was dragged underwater. He didn't keep her long, but she still sputtered slightly as she stood and shook the water from her face. She stuck her tongue out at him as she flipped her wet hair over her shoulder.
She wasn't particularly careful about who she might have knocked it into in the process.
"Legs? What a disappointment. Here I was hoping I could trade in my old mutation for a new one. You know, get an upgrade." She lightly poked him in the side again since trying to splash him at this point would risk actually hitting him. Giving someone a bloody nose in a pool was always a bad idea. Then she hopped backwards a few steps, enjoying the almost floating sensation being in water seemed to give. "You look a little waterlogged. Maybe you should surrender." She calmly suggested. It was hard to keep the grin off her face though ,and the corners of her mouth twitched slightly with the effort.
"What, Maya can't pull off a bikini?" She smirked. She opened one eye for a second, chuckled, then shut it and went back to relaxing. Well, mostly relaxing. She heard the coughing that confirmed a hit with her splash and a smile spread across her face. Point one for Evelyn.
"Whoops. My bad." There was no guilt whatsoever in her voice, and if anything, there was the faint hint of laughter. She opened her eyes and looked over, squinted at him after his 'threat'.
"You know, you got something there on your face. Here, I'll just--" She splashed him again and then smiled innocently. "Oh, wait. That was just water." With a splash she dove into the water, and swam for the other end of the pool before he could retaliate. Plus side of having the echoes and her memories was keeping her eyes open wasn't necessary all the time. The water didn't have much chlorine, but it could still sting a little in large quantities. She popped up midway where she could touch and glanced around to see where the knight was.
The echoes flickered and she turned, following their attention.
Gawain's retort brought a tint of pink to her face, but he ducked underwater before she could really say anything back. At least not right away. By the time he resurfaced she had paddled backwards to the edge of the pool and rolled her eyes at him.
"Maybe I'll just wear this for my next danger room session then. I mean, scantly clad girls in video games always seem impervious to danger right?" She teased, then lost a bit of her courage and smiled more shyly. She was having an odd day today. She felt physically rested, but mentally drained. Normally, she seemed to be in a reverse situation.
"And swimming was your idea. I was told to get dressed and come out here so if you get bored, that's your fault." She shut her eyes and leaned her head back, letting the early morning sun settle on her face. Then while listening carefully to his movements and piecing them together with her memories, she sent a large splash in the direction of the boy without opening her eyes.
Evelyn tilted her head to the side slightly, several different images flashing through her head at once. Somehow, she was pretty sure neither really showed what it would be like to have a mermaid on the team. Unless having a fish tail in the danger room was beneficial. Maybe if the scenario was underwater. That seemed like it would be stretching it though.
"Water fairy. Sounds ethereal. I could deal with that. And it would have been fun to meet a mermaid. At least, it sounds like it could have been. I've found mutations are rarely what I expect them to be though." While Gawain was still shaking water from his hair, she jabbed him in the side playfully before ducking underwater and swimming away towards the deeper end of the pool. Resurfacing in the deeper water she grinned and tread water with a taunting smirk. The water felt surprisingly refreshing, and she was actually having a bit of fun.
She was also sort of being a brat right now. The two seemed to be going together. "We should do what more often? Hang out or swim?" She tilted her head to the side in an inquisitive manner, the light off her wet hair making it look even more white than normal. She wasn't sure blond could really be a descriptor for it at the moment. There was hardly a hint of yellow in the pale locks.
Evelyn, thankfully, had been fairly focused on the debate about her swimming suit color, and missed most of Gawain's staring. By the time she glanced up, he was in the water, and she flicked her hand across the surface of the pool splashing water lightly in his direction.
"Tanning. I'm not sure I have a tan gene in me. The world would miss my ghostly complexion if I did." She smiled slightly, and then finally slipped into the pool next to him. The cold water had a refreshing sting to it as she went under, and as she stood her wet hair clung to her face.
Ponytail. She definitely should have gone with the pony tail.
Pushing her hair back, she flicked the water from her eyes and blushed slightly as she tried to push the pale strands over her right shoulder. "A braid probably would have been a good idea. Next time you should give me the extra two minutes so I don't look silly freeing myself from my own hair." She remarked sheepishly, stepping sideways a little into shallower water.

Evelyn watched the gryphon cautiously at first, but then he made a slight bowing motion, which gave her a vague Harry Potter type feeling. While she was pretty sure the teen wasn't a hippogryph, the action was similar enough she relaxed a little.
Well, relaxed mostly. The whole gashing the grass bit just made her echoes note how dangerous talons could be if used against someone. "Can't promise you how good the echoes are at reading gryphons and all, so you're going to have to work with me here if you need anything." She warned, at cautiously touched his feathered head. The texture was somewhat like fur, somewhat like feathers, and she couldn't quite pinpoint which, or if it was either.
She was standing and petting another mutant. The thought flickered through her mind and nearly made her laugh out loud, concern lifting for the moment.

Evelyn shrugged, and rubbed her shoulder slightly as she hung up the phone. "If you break it, I can fix it. I'd hide a key under the mat if it made you feel better. Most my stuff got trashed during the riots anyway. Door hasn't exactly been in top shape since." She sighed slightly and shrugged. There wasn't much to do about it now. She caught his muttered comment about the two mutant havens though and chuckled slightly in response.
"I've ended up at both places. Sanctuary wasn't exactly my idea though. Mansion was more out of necessity at first then it grew on me. I liked living on my own, but I've learned more living with others. It's kind of a trade off I guess. Plus, there are a few people I enjoy spending time with" She moved towards the ladder, pushing her dirty hair from her face. She paused to answer his question though.
"An adapted is pretty much someone who has a field that nullifies mutant powers. We have one at the mansion, and I was having some bad memories and thought I could get some sleep if I was around her. Playbacks switched on soon as I woke up and moved away though. It...well, I probably won't try it again." She admitted. She started up the ladder, and shrugged, uncertain weather or not he could see the action.
"Considering last time you relocated because I found where you were staying, I think it's just in your character. Echoes noted it though. If you come topside though it will be easier to get your food, and more sanitary. The alley leads straight to my apartment so not like anyone would see you. Not trying to force you to come though." She caught the resentment in his voice, and the nervous fidgeting. The monster she encountered was mostly gone now. She just has a socially awkward teenager on her hands. Without waiting to see if he would follow she wriggled out to the street above, and got her first good glance at her arm.
A bit of peroxide was definitely going to be needed...and bandages... quite a few bandages.

Evelyn snorted in a very unladylike way at her monster companion's comment, and in the darkness her face curled into a lopsided grin. Maybe part of it was the stress from the previous events, or maybe part of it was just relief at the normal conversation. Either way, something about the image of 'social butterfly' and the teen amused her. "People at my work keep me in my back room because of my lack of social tact. You may not be too keen to run to someone for help, but if nothing else, break into my apartment. I'll keep the cupboards stocked or something. I spend all my time at the mansion anyway, so you wouldn't really have to worry about being forced to have a conversation or anything."
She shrugged and brushed her hands off on her jeans. Well, tried to. She was fairly certain her jeans weren't any cleaner at the moment. If nothing else she would need to find a change of clothes before she made it back home. the cab driver would charge her an arm and a leg to get her back like this. She paused and listened as he talked about his mutation politely, and gave a slight nod of her head.
"I don't understand my mutation that much either...heck, my own powers practically put me in a coma the other night when I slept too close to an adapted." She left it at that. Learning tended to come from experiences, and while this had been unpleasant, it had tested his level of control over his abilities. She was standing. It was a start.
"I'll make sure to use some hospital strength disinfectant on my arm though, promise. In the meantime, we'll get you food so you... well, don't try to snack on anything else. And I live closeby, remember? All I gotta do is jump topside and bring the pizza back down. As long as you don't take off while I'm up there, you'll at least have a full dinner tonight. Bearable?" She watched him closely. Part of her expected him to take off the second she would leave, but she'd drop the pizzas off anyway. Either way, she punched in the numbers on the phone and ordered four large pizzas with a mixture of topping. If nothing else, she figured he could have some leftovers.
After the way he devoured the lasagna though, she figured they wouldn't last that long.

Evelyn politely kept her back turned to the teen. There wasn't much else she could safely do while she waited. Staring would have been awkward on several levels, and glancing at any moment could make it look like she had been staring. So she solved that problem by just not looking at all.
That was, until she heard the screech behind her.
She turned and jumped backwards in surprise as a gryphon dove her way. The fur was the same color as Carrick's tail had been, the feathers the same golden hue as his wings. In fact, the wings mostly looked the same. Maybe bigger... And now he had talons. And a beak. And...well, everything else a gryphon would have
"Other face...right....tearing clothing like the hulk...." She muttered nervously, wondering if this would be the appropriate time to leave or wait.

Evelyn frowned, and sighed at his response. She was once again reminded of the slightly sulky teen she'd met before. He wanted no pity or help, but she foolishly kept trying to give both. "What's 'unreasonable' is you're willing to risk peoples lives for your pride. So what if someone feeds you? If you know being hungry makes it easier for your inner animal to escape, then shouldn't you take help when it's offered? And I told you that you didn't have to move. I never told anyone where you were at..." She spoke genuinely, the fear gone from her voice now, tucked away to be replayed at another time. She was still sitting on the ground though, uncertain whether she could trust her legs yet. An argument lost strength if you face-planted after giving it.
"Mutations are funny things. Maybe you can't control yours. Maybe you never will be able to. Maybe you will. Guess we'll have to just wait and see huh?" She acted calmer than she felt. After seeing the monster under the surface, she had a fair idea of what he could do if 'can't control' became permanent. The city would be hunted, people would be endangered. It was a dark idea, and one she didn't want to consider. But she also knew it was possible. She spent 24 years with a mutation she couldn't control. At most, she could direct it, much like he did. While for her it was like pointing a toddler to the right toy, for him it was like releasing a tiger on the right prey. Control was something more terrifying when it was in his claws.
Evelyn glanced down, trying to pinpoint where she was injured. Bruises would show up later down the road, but the gash was the only immediate injury she could feel right now. Cuts would probably be easier to find outside in the light. She gave a rueful smile at his remark, and the apology he managed to slip in. "I'm good at dealing with pain. I may look like a damsel on the outside, but I'm tougher on the inside." She forced herself to her feet finally, legs stinging with bruises and scrapes as she stood. She skinned herself in a few places, and disinfecting them was probably a very good idea.
But first thing's first. "Do sewer monsters eat pizza?" She fished in her pocket for her phone, luckily still intact after their scuffle, and flipped through her contacts for the right number.

Gawain was waiting, thankfully, so Evelyn didn't have to stand around awkwardly in a bathing suit any longer than necessary. For once, he seemed a little shy as well, which reassured her in an odd way. She managed not to blush, although as soon as she ditched the tank top she probably would.
The air outside was warm, even in the morning, and she followed as they reached the pool, glancing for somewhere to put her towel. Folding it and setting it on a chair, then pulling her tank top off to put with it, she glanced over her shoulder at Gawain, then smirked at his question. "My family may have been a fan of the whole, 'laying around and tanning' bit, but I was the one who actually got in the water. More fun that way." She wandered over to the edge of the pool and sat, swinging her pale legs into the water. It was cold, but not unbearable.
"It has been a little while though." She added, glancing down and looking at her skin in the water. It was that unnaturally fair color that seemed suited for her hair. She wondered if she could have used more tanning. The blue of her swim suit matched her eyes, but she considered wearing red next time. Maybe then she wouldn't look as flushed. Or would it make her look even whiter?
She glanced up at Gawain, pushing aside her thoughts while the echoes noted how many steps there were leading into the shallow end of the pool.

His body language changed, and even in the dark the echoes could note the slight shifts in his movements. It was like he was pulling a plug, and emptying all his emotions. It was a defense mechanism, a way to wash away that darker side of his mind. She felt... sad, for him. Even though he had just tried to kill her, she could see those very human feelings in his form, his expressions. This was what the echoes did though. They connected her with people, made her understand. It was a strength, and a weakness. Because she could see the humanity, it made it harder for her to fear the monsters. It was what brought her here to the sewer, and almost got her killed.
"If I had known you were that hungry I would have come sooner." The pale haired girl said quietly. It felt silly he shouldn't eat for a few days, and then end up murdering people. Now instead of thinking about running and leaving she was contemplating ways to get the kid more food. She almost missed his sad apology for almost eating her.
She gave a soft smile in response. "Well you didn't eat me, so we're doing good, right?" she was fairly certain that wasn't going to reassure him though, so she sighed and continued. "Listen... I don't forget things. Every time I sleep, I relive my own memories. But over time it's taught me a few things. I can't change the past. No matter how much I want to, when I close my eyes, story is still the same. So why worry about it. Just fix the future. I don't know if you can change your mutation, or change what you're becoming, but that's something you'll figure out... so don't waste time with sorries." Her arms had stopped shaking now, and she could breathe a little easier. She listened to his warning, and mentally flinched a little. She knew she shouldn't have, but she couldn't get rid of her curiosity anymore than he could remove his tail.
She glanced down at her arm, and saw the line of red in the darkness. "Nothing DocProf can't fi---actually....nothing a few bandages won't fix..." The last thing she wanted was to ask DocProf to heal her arm. If he knew she was down here in the sewer getting chased by a monster.... "You still hungry?" She ventured carefully. She figured she could grab something from one of the restaurants if she needed to. She didn't mention trying to help him avoid snacking on someone. She wasn't sure if he could decide that for himself.
