The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Evelyn was trying really hard to tune out the echoes coming off Aiden at this point. Her annoyance made her desperate to hear anything else, but in a quiet library, distractions weren't as numerous. She could let the echoes list every title on the bookshelf, but that would probably only succeed in making her more unhappy.
[Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. Sorry.]
Well, if that wasn't clear enough...
Slowly she glanced back at him, body language still on guard but echoes slowly getting receptive again. He flipped his glasses open and closed, and his body language was submissive now. It felt odd, in a way. Usually she was the awkward one, but this time the tables were turned. Her brain processed what he was saying slowly, and she leaned against the shelf.
"You don't have to apologize. Just...try to make the most of things here. No one has it easy. We can't change who we are. Can't change, the past, can only change the future and how we handle it." Well, wasn't she making the inspirational speech now... She picked up another book and flipped through it. She didn't care what it said, she just wanted the awkwardness to fade away again.

The conversation had taken a less than amusing turn, and Evelyn crossed her arms, facing the teen. His remark struck a nerve, and she straightened up looking less like another student and more like an adult who was tired of taking lip. "Have I ever actively tried keeping my mind off something? I don't think you really listen. At all. My powers don't shut off. I have to keep my mind off something constantly. You know what it's like having powers that point things out? It's like having someone with ADD following you around gossiping about everything. You know, it's one thing to worry about people judging you. It's another to know when they are, and have someone constantly pointing out other people's opinions. Especially opinion's you care about."
She had faced that more than once, feeling the sting of her parent's judgment, the snobbish opinions of her peers. She felt the rejection, amplified and unforgettable. It wasn't that she thought his own emotions and own feelings weren't important. She felt for him, really. But his dismissal of what she suggested had a judgmental prickling to it. Oh right, what did she know about his situation.
Dumb students. Dumb sunglasses. Dumb powers for making it so irritable. She exhaled from her nose, keeping her temper in check, then turning back to the books sifting through the titles. She was silent for a moment, then walked a few steps, yanked back the books, and pulled his sunglasses from the shelf, plopping them on one of the reading chairs. "Go ahead. Keep hiding." She said, then turned back to the shelves.

Aiden's logic was seriously flawed. At least, from Evelyn's perspective it was. The echoes were feeding off his body language still though, so she could understand where he was coming from, in a way. He didn't want people to think he was odd, but when he was fighting that didn't matter. Or maybe there was something about his powers then? She didn't really know what his powers were, so that was entirely true. Her eyes responded to her powers so that was certainly a possibility as well. Maybe it was a mixture of both.
[Distress.] The echoes changed direction with enough force to rattle her own thoughts. Most of the time, she stayed in line with her powers, so the echoes and her thinking felt the same. Redirection like this though always caught her off guard. One of her statements had hit a nerve on Aiden, and she backtracked to the point she noticed it. Funeral. Well, she would avoid making jokes like that for now. If there was a nerve in the mention of death and dying she needed to be careful. She really wasn't in the mood for all the drama.
"If you can fight without them, I bet you can do other stuff without them too. Give it a day. Watch T.V. Go swimming. Try something. You were reading already. Read. Keep your mind off it and you won't even realize they're gone." She was only partially convinced of that, but he needed to believe it if he was going to get anywhere. Sometimes, things like these were just like birds leaving the nest. You just needed to give them a good kick.

Evelyn, having pretty much lacked a dating life at all, had yet to realize there was anything she was missing. But the echoes were quite the tattle tales and figured whatever it was Gawain felt a sliver of guilt over it. She shrugged it off with a smile, though, knowing with all the chaos time to hang out had been rare anyway.
>>"I would be a really poor knight... if my girlfriend had to drag me out on a date."
"I think our relationship had a fair amount of dragging in it from the start, so one way or the other we'll get somewhere. But I don't mind, as long as that kiss stays in the deal." She smiled. She was doing good not getting embarrassed today. Maybe it was progress. Maybe it was the training mindset kicking in.
>>"Angua is awesome. She ended up with me by accident. I never regretted it, though."
She glanced back down at Angua and the line of drool starting to stain her pantleg. Ok, that was sort of gross, but the happy expression sort of made her forgive it. "Maybe someday. Although, i have no idea how compatible I'd be trying to take care of something full time. It would either be good practice at controlling my echoes, or I'd quickly loose my mind."

....not outgoing. Evelyn couldn't help it, she giggled and covered her mouth, muffling it into an unladylike snort. The fact that they were conversing how outgoing anyone was was ironic at best. "Seriously, I don't think you have to be outgoing. Or even social. Because I suck at that one. Just, be more confident in yourself. If you're paying attention to where your glasses are on the battlefield what good are you in a fight? I mean, we all have stuff we have to work on. Heck, I got voices in my head." She shrugged, and moved back to the bookshelf, picking up another book and flipping through the pages.
She didn't really know why she bothered though. It wasn't like she didn't know the ending...
"Just, think of it as training. Ignore them for a day. See if you shrivel up and die or not. If you do, I'll pay for the funeral. If you don't, you're one step closer to living in the daylight."

Evelyn's face went pink again, but this time a smile was on her face. As embarrassed as she got sometimes, she was still enjoying the attention. Having a bodyguard had prevented a lot of trouble, but also a lot of fun. Part of her still got nervous without the protection, but she enjoyed the freedom whenever she could.
"Well, even if I can remember it, it'd still be fun to do again. I'll have to drag you out sometime too. I never got to just go out on a nice dinner date when Jensen was around. I think it may be nice to see what I missed. And if it's awful you have full permission to ditch me through the dinnerware." She smirked, glancing at the target. The shots were getting better so at least the conversation shift wasn't effecting Gawain's aim as much.
A nudge at her leg reminded her of someone else needing attention. Evelyn obliged and gave into the demands for pets. "I never did have any pets. I do occasionally feel like I've been missing something though..." She remarked.

Evelyn wasn't sure he believed her about her eyes. His eye contact seemed confused, then there seemed to be a small bit of doubt. Considering they were pure blue now, that didn't seem surprising. She honed her echoes in on him though, directing her powers enough the color started to fade again and the grey started to reappear. "Hey, it's not like you have to change all at once. But don't make yourself miserable for no reason."
She shifted, admittedly also not the best at conversations like these. But the feedback from her echoes was encouraging her to continue, so she tried. "If you wear your sunglasses, what are people going to think? Well, they could assume you're a little stuck up. People who are 'too cool' to take their sunglasses off indoors do the same thing. But your body language doesn't reflect that. They could think you've got something to hide, and that doesn't necessarily mean your eyes. People who don't give eye contact can by lying and keeping secrets and can be dishonest. People could think you have bad eyes. Which could just make you seem weak and vulnerable. But what's the worst they can assume if they see your eye? Maybe you got in an accident, they're curious. Maybe you're a mutant, they're curious. Maybe they think it looks cool. I think you create more negative reactions with than without them." She let go of the string of words, and shifted to the side, straightening a few books the echoes noted were out of order.
"Aren't you trying to be an x-men?" She added, glancing over her shoulder at him.

Gradually, Aiden's body language changed. It seemed he was finally getting what she was saying. There was a flicker of hope, doubt, disbelief, but less fear and not quite as much nervousness. Generally, he just didn't seem to believe what was happening. But then, he looked up!. For a single glance he was not trying to tell what his shoes were made out of.
"Why would it bother me?" She responded with a tilt of her head. "Heck, my eyes change color. I've met sewer mutants with giant tales and claws and eyes to match. If I started getting bothered by that stuff, I'd be bothered for a really really long time." She shrugged, and put her book back on the shelf. She'd come back to it later. It didn't seem like she would read much more today.

>>"Does it, like, work the same way? With pleasant memories, I mean."[/b]
Evelyn started to nod, then realized they were still working on the concentration testing. She answered out loud as the echoes shifted to study Gawain's shooting. "Pretty much the same. That's why I ended up liking art so much. If I keep stuff around to focus in on the good memories, it's less likely I deal with a bad memory. But beyond that what I remember is sort of random. Same intensity, but unless I like....meditate on something to specifically get information there's not much control over specific memories I get..." She felt like she was rambling. Maybe she was. A lot of how her powers worked was trial and error for her. Sleeping next to an adapted and busting her brain? Trial and error. Getting electrocuted and learning that set off the playbacks? Trial and error.
Trying to join a mutant super-hero team with no offensive skills? Trial and error.
"Swimming. That was a good memory. And I can still remember it pretty clearly." She smiled, the echoes taking a break to see where Angua had wandered off to.

Evelyn was trying to be polite, but Aiden only seemed to be stressing out more. He flinched and moved like a squirrel in the middle of a road, uncertain which way to run and hide. Then finally, he was staring at his feet awkwardly, and she sighed, rubbing her temple to clear the echoes clouding her thoughts.
"You really need to relax, is what you need to do. Honestly, do you want me to stare at your eye? Do you want me to ignore it? Do you want me to throw you your darn sunglasses? Because I don't care one way or the other. Really I think you draw more attention to yourself with them on than you do with them off anyway. There are plenty of people with visible mutations. People are only going to be as comfortable with them as you are." The words came out in a string, and she worried she was going to verbally bulldoze the poor kid. But his distress was clouding the room that was originally peaceful, and her book was getting drowned out of memory.
Not that she really could forget what she was reading, but the mood...the mood was gone.

Gawain's next question was a welcomed distraction, and Evelyn keyed in on it to pull herself out of the memory. Pain dissipated almost as quickly as it had come, but the mental rattling stayed for a little bit. Having something to answer though was like a ladder to climb out with.
"It's sort of a yes and no answer I guess.... It depends on how much I'm focusing on it. It's like if you stare straight at the sun or sort of off next to it. Most of the time I'm not getting the full force of memories. I'll get faces and names and information, but the actual details like pain and experiences only pop up when I sleep." She watched Gawain's shooting, noting the one arrow clinging to the edge of the target. Obviously, your girlfriend's brain trying to break her was distracting enough to almost miss...
"I must have had that playback recently though. It was....pretty close." She finally said, crossing her arms across her chest and leaning back against the tree. She sifted for something more recent with a pleasant element to it.

Evelyn hated being around stressed out people. The emotional feedback crashed into her head like a wave of information, as the echoes struggled to assess and process every movement. [Panic, confusion. Looking around, can't remember. Eye contact, fear, realization, embarrassment, nervous...] Whoooaaaa this kid had some anxiety going right now. At first she wasn't sure why, but gradually the echoes sifted through the situation and pinpointed the correlation with his suddenly exposed eye. It was if he expected her to be judging him about it or something...Which was odd, considering where they were.
Evelyn blinked slowly, and scanned the room, mentally backtracking the memories she had of Aiden. Rather than confront his behavior directly, she decided to focus on his main concern: the glasses. It took a second, her eyes taking on their subtle silvery color before she pointed to a bookshelf. "Last time I remember seeing you with them was over there." She announced. Then she turned back, letting her eyes fade back to their blue color.
"You know, you really don't have to wear those all the time." She was fairly certain this was a repetitive argument, but it was always worth another shot. She tucked her book under her arm and reeled her echoes back in. She was still stuck over where the echoes were certain the sunglasses were. She was half-tempted to let him get them now just to get the voices to shut up.

Evelyn loved libraries. She loved the smell of them, she loved the books, she loved reading, she loved the books... Even after getting attacked in the danger room by several of her favorite novels, she still had an affinity for the written word. So, it wasn't surprising that she was in the library, when most people would probably rather be outside. She could have probably been training or working on her self-defense, or something of the sort. But reading just seemed a lot nicer. And at least for a little bit she could tune out the echoes.
[Panicked figure, thin frame, dark hair. Identified, Aiden.]
The appearance of the younger mutant took her by surprise, and she looked up from her novel to peer at the figure. For once, he wasn't sporting his sunglasses, and it took a single glance for her to identify why he normally wore them.
Really? THAT was what he was so worried about?
Sending the echoes out across the library, she pushed her hair from her face while they skimmed the corners of her vision for his glasses. "If you start where you were reading last you might find them quicker... Most people set them on the shelf then accidentally put the book in front of them when they put the book away." She remarked calmly, trying not to startle him.

Gawain might not have said anything, but his body language was yelling loud enough for the echoes to hear. Evelyn felt the tables shift a little, and it took effort on her end not to back out of the conversation. Gawain was keeping his head, she was not dodging arrows, so far that should have been good. Although it felt a little awkward now and she had to keep the color from her face.
>>"I don't remember hearing about this."
"It was before we started dating. Heck, before the riots even. I don't really like remembering that event though. Getting smacked in the head with a bronze statue has a sti--" The experiment provided an unfortunate side effect at that particular moment, as the echoes pulled up the details of the memory. Those details included a rather painful burst of pain, enough she put her hand up to her head for an injury that wasn't there. Pain was a funny thing. It was based on nerves sending signals to the brain, but when those signals were already stored in the brain...
She stayed on her feet. All things considered, that was a step up for her. She squinted at the target and waved her hand at it. "Keep shooting." She remarked, voice firm regardless of the slight waver the memory set into it.

The remark seemed to work. While Gawain still managed to hit the target, his body language was shifting. Intentionally needling Gawain felt strange, but it was also turning into a matter of 'winning' or 'loosing'. Conversations like this came up between them, and should one happen on the field, they would have to work while they worked through it. Feeling like she legitimized her intentions, she continued.
>>"And is he any good at self defense?"
"Better than most people I've met. Although considering I was trying to fight off burglars with a broom when I met him that's probably a good thing. Almost got kidnapped that night. He was the one who stopped the van before it got too far though." Leaving out information here and there was likely to earn at least some reaction. Even though Gawain might have heard of the broom incident, she was fairly certain he never got the whole story of the car chase and crash, the explosions, flames....
She was careful though. Needling too much would definitely come back to bite if she nudged the 'jealousy' vibe too much. Having Mirror try to pick a fight with Kyle would probably not be the most preferable outcome of this experiment. But it was up to the mirrorwalker to work through that sensation.
