The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The day before had been rough.
Customer service was always stressful. Dealing with mutants could also be stressful. Getting attacked by your favorite artwork though blew all of that out of the water, and getting attacked by medieval armor was--
Stressful. Lots and lots of stressful.
After Kyle took her back to the mansion, Evelyn hadn't been in the mood to talk. It was bad enough she got hurt what with the whole 'can take care of myself' thing, oh and the 'Can I be a trainee' bit. But Kyle having to help put a different wedge in things. Somehow, she was fairly certain it wouldn't go unnoticed. After Doc Prof fixed her up though she was too exhausted to try facing the repercussions. She made her way back to her room, crawled up inside a cocoon of blankets, and slept the afternoon off.
The next morning brought a lovely little playback hangover. Getting bashed in the head once by a shield was one thing. Reliving it in your sleep?
She should have known it was a bad sign and stayed in bed. But no, she got dressed just in time for a knock and a call at the door.
Shit....
Straightening her shirt and rubbing her forehead with an already building headache, she cracked the door and gazed out at Gawain. For someone who just slept, she felt exhausted. "Hey."

Control some of these things... Evelyn shot Kyle a bewildered glance at the idea. The torso of the metal knight on the ground twisted, struggling to move without the invisible connections. These were supposed to be inanimate objects. How could you control any of it? "Well do you have a plan? I know we can't save everything but this art is irreplaceable!" Down the hallway, a few paintings squabbled, and she moved in the direction the echoes last saw the mutant. The art was starting to mingle now, and it was harder to guess what would lurk around every corner. Egyptian and Western Art bickered, and Asian art--
"Samurai!" Sai clanged against the metal blade, and Evelyn had to backpedal slightly to keep her balance as the blow struck. The figure was....weird. [Honda Tadakatsu, from Art of the Samurai exhibition.] The figure was highly stylized, squared shoulders and an almost geometric element to him typical of wood block style art. He could have looked almost comical, if his sword didn't have a very real clang to it and the force wasn't so dangerous.

So, I'm working to get book edits and art projects done over the next month, and I may not be around as often. I will likely still be posting, but my actual cbox presence and such may be limited. If anyone needs to get a hold of me honestly the best way to do that is to IM nudge me or PM me. <3

Kyle's comment was a somewhat twisted compliment, but Evelyn accepted it for what it was. At least when it came to artwork her primary focus was on making sure the museum was ok, and not on whoever happened to make comments about her butt. Although she was fairly certain if he ever tried hitting her like that again, she'd find some way to kick him in the groin. She hoped she could be fast enough for it though. A failed kick just came across as a temper tantrum rather than being a threat.
"If we can just catch up to the guy though, maybe we won't have to worry about fighting the art..." Evelyn said. She desperately didn't want to be responsible for any paintings getting ruined. Almost everything in this museum was irreplaceable, whether it was a sculpture, statue, or a bench. Around another corner, and then they had reached the arms and armory.
Holy army of knights...
Metal horses reared up on their hind legs, the empty forms galloping in a circle, their riders swinging weapons at one another and clattering with the loud rumble of metal hitting metal. Evelyn scrambled sideways, eyes skimming for one thing among the displays that was worth the risk of lingering. There they were, a pair of sai brought in just the other week...Without giving warning to Forte, she darted for the display case, for once grateful it was broken like most of the other cases. It took a split second to reach in, snatch the blades, and turn back around.
It almost took a second too long to bring the weapons together to catch the mace swung at her head. Metal clanged on metal, vibrations shooting up her arms, but there was no time to delay. Forward, sai hooked the armored horse by one of the legs and yanked as she ran. There was a thunderous thud as the equine went down and she backed away.
Over the clamor of metal she almost missed the footsteps behind her, barely turning in time to duck and avoid the spear swung at her head.
Evelyn wasn't exactly big on the whole 'Halloween' thing. Having voices in your head sort of took out all the fun of it. It didn't matter that she already knew the costumes were fake and people were dressing up, but the echoes felt the need to point out every flaw, every stitch, every fake blood splatter. (Then there was one year they pointed out a few real ones. She was somewhat skittish at that point.)
When you lived in the biggest mutant hub around, there were bound to be some real monsters lurking about. That didn't make her feel relieved. It just made her feel somewhat drained listening to the constant feed of information, waiting for the one tidbit that was useful. It was like tapping a phone line, knowing she had to pay attention whether it was interesting or not. As soon as you hung up, you'd miss something.
Not that she could really hang up on her powers.
This year though, she at least had something to do. The Historical Preservation society was working with the Fire Department, putting on some 'haunted house'. Evelyn was recommended to help because of her work with the MET. While most of the staff was on hand acting, she was there mostly to keep an eye on the building and see it didn't come to harm. She sort of had a knack for that sort of thing. Plus, the fire department knew her relationship with the x-men, which was just a bonus. So maybe she could have been doing something more fun for Halloween, like maybe trying to convince Mirror to go out with her to dinner or something. But at least here she could let the echoes be useful instead of just nosy.
Guests were gradually starting to arrive, and Evelyn drifted from room to room keeping an eye on things. Pale white hair, tattered white dress and natural pale skin, she had been volunteered quickly for the role of ghost which allowed her to 'drift' without looking out of place. So far, so good. No one needed to warn her she was a terrible actress, so she didn't even try. So long as she didn't spend much time with customers, she was fine. Somewhere between rounds, the echoes gave an interesting heads up though. One of the figures who just arrived was one of the x-men she trained with over the summer. Even in make-up, they could make out the face. Maybe she should say hi...but she resisted for the moment, not wanting to spoil things for the kids he brought along.

Saphirus dropped the crowbar. That was his first confusing action. Weapon went down, hand moved out, and her sai came in contact with his finger tips. The weapon stopped, but there was no recoil, as if the energy got suddenly drained from the attack. The echoes tried to guess what happened, but there was nothing they had seen before that could explain the phenomenon. He also acted on reflex: somehow his body kept turning into her attack, with a speed that didn't feel natural.
She took a gamble, and was pretty sure her choice for attack was correct, but there was nothing that could make her move faster as he spun. The hook of the crowbar hit her legs, and he yanked.
Her strength wasn't quite strong enough to prevent the falling towards the floor. But experience helped quickly turn it into a roll back onto her feet, and a counter attack for his left leg. The follow up blow moved to shove his arm by the elbow, maybe keep him spinning away from her, knock him off balance. Front of the sai aimed for his leg, back came up in a blow for the stomach. She kept her feet moving this time, and the echoes tracked his weapon. Meanwhile, she studied Saphirus' reaction to any blows that contacted. Some of them just didn't feel right....

The echoes took careful notes during the interaction, even at the point where Evelyn's balance was tested, and she was focused on other things. It took effort to keep her feet under her, especially when a kick and a shove sent one leg awkwardly off to the side. Sloppily, she caught herself, but at least she wasn't sitting on her butt. That was always an awful way to make a first impression, and she tried her best to avoid it when possible now.
>>"Again."
Righting herself, Evelyn circled back, and tossed one sai up, then the next, lightly, catching each by the point. Fingers gripped with the points towards her forearms, she would have more force to hit with at the base of the weapon, and the pointed end to strike with on the back swing. With someone as fast as Saphirus, catching him at all would take a double strike of some sort. It made her wished she watched more movies. It would be easier to think of ways to fight if she had something more to go off of.
A dart, a swing with the right hand to try to connect with the crowbar and deflect it out of the way. The main force went into a left handed hit, aimed once more for his left side. [Lack of reaction towards strikes on right side. Protecting left.] The information verified what she suspected in the beginning. But knowing wasn't necessarily going to give her an advantage right now. Somehow, he moved reflexively when she attacked, crowbar almost effortlessly pushing her attack away. She needed a way to combat that.
She needed to keep her stance braced though. He was already aiming for her legs, and she braced herself so she wouldn't get knocked down again.

Saphirus seemed at least to approve of who she's trained with. That was a start. If he sat there frowning at her the whole time she'd start thinking he was just naturally grumpy, not just hard to please. If his fellow x-men at least got some approval there was some hope, right? Not that she felt she could do much at this point to win favor. It was like asking a mouse to impress a cat.
As he moved to pick up his weapon of choice, a crow bar, she assessed the object. It could be effective, but would take strength to wield, but that matched what she knew about the other mutant. It wasn't particularly long range, unless you threw it, but she didn't view crowbars as necessarily being aerodynamic. Watching him fight with it would be more revealing. Where he chose to block, when he chose to hit; what hand he held it with could say a bit too. If he seemed to have difficulty using one hand over the other could show a preference for what side to fight with. She tried to treat Saphirus like she had learned to treat Forte: he wasn't someone who was exactly going to let her get by easy. He said he would start that way, but she doubted it would stay there.
She picked up the sai and adjusted them in her hands, holding them somewhat lightly so the vibrations from striking another metal object wouldn't hurt her arms as much. She watched Saphirus' stance carefully, the echoes noting his right side staying forward. First thing first was to test why. People usually put their stronger side to the front, so naturally, it would be a good place to start seeking a weakness.
She moved forward, making a feint for his from right leg, then sidestepping and aiming for his left side. The echoes were ready to watch his reactions.

Watching someone watch you watch them created an interesting mental tango. It was like a stand off, each sizing up the other. Not that Evelyn could stand toe to toe with him at this point. He was a full x-men, she was a trainee. But mentally, she could play that game. If he liked intimidating people, then he might find her harder to keep on edge. Because she would know if that was what he was doing, read it in his actions, tell when it was a game. And she didn't like when people messed with her.
At the same time, this was someone she had to train under. What he thought about her could reflect on Gawain, and if she was a pain in the ass, they might regret taking her in as a trainee. She needed to do her best, regardless of the impression she was getting.
She stayed focused, tucking away his reactions to storage.
Her answer didn't seem to impress him. Maybe she should have said something about the good of all, using her powers to save people. While she wanted to help, she wasn't going to lie and act like she was starry eyed with the whole hero gig. She felt things were more complicated than just being a hero. There was responsibility, justice, tough choices that were more than saving people. There was also paper work. She had dated Mirror long enough to catch him working on paper work from time to time.
"I've trained a bit, and felt like I've been learning... Locke worked with me, Gawain and I have trained. I feel like I've learned to use my powers better and have a better idea of what they can do." She remarked. She decided not to mention her training with Kyle. Anyone who wasn't an x-man might not be viewed in the best light by Saphirus.
>>"What would you say the responsibilities of the X-Men are?"
"Use their powers to help maintain peace. Stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves. Be both heroes, but also being a force for justice. I guess responsibilities could include a lot though... you guys train students, go on missions. Work with the police..." She said thoughtfully. Was there a right answer? Was there a wrong answer? She wasn't sure at this point.

Tone of voice, body language, appearance: these things said a lot about a person. Especially to someone like Evelyn. The echoes, lacking much else to focus on, quickly took assessment of the individual in front of her, and she tried to make sense of the information she received.
The fact he brought the sai showed he probably knew something about her fighting style and what she was familiar with. Bringing them might have showed some prior planning. But he seemed tired, somewhat irritated, and that didn't match up with some of the other x-men she knew. Gawain and Sam were more light-hearted. She'd seen both angry, but this emotion seemed to be somewhat in Saphirus' demeanor. Maybe he was more stern, but that didn't quite match up either. It was like there was something almost twistedly amused under the surface. If he was someone who liked being the tough guy, that could make sense. If he wanted to intimidate, that could be true as well. The thoughts quickly processed through her head, taking only a few moments as she moved across the room to where he was.
>>"I've got a few questions."
She had a few as well.
"I tried out because I wanted to do more with my powers than just organize paintings all day. I grew up having someone look out for me. Felt like I wanted to look out for myself." Evelyn said simply. There was probably more to it than that. She wanted to feel useful. She wanted to be stronger, less fragile. She watched Saphirus, echoes poised to read his body language at her response. He was learning about her, but she was learning about him.

Evelyn had never met Saphirus, but she wasn't unfamiliar with what he looked like. At the mansion she had at least caught glances of most of the x-men, and faces were rarely new to her. Personalities though, that was something else entirely. She knew very little about the other mutant and knew even less of what to expect when she got the note for the training session in the Danger Room.
There were always rumors though, and she considered those as she made her way down the halls. Saph was tough. Saph had a temper. Saph put Aiden in the infirmary. Although that one she didn't give too much thought to. After all, her first danger room session ended with her passing out.
She didn't too much. Or at least, she tried not to.
Evelyn didn't exactly have offensive powers though. And sometimes she felt like training sessions were a huge stretch for her. The tryout had focused on her mental strength, but put her against something physical, she was still just human. Training couldn't make her unbreakable. Training couldn't give her control over elements or something equally useful. Training would only make it easier to evade and maybe better with her Sai.
So whatever Saphirus thought he could accomplish with her had a sense of foreboding. She entered the danger room and tried to put her concerns away.

>>"Artwork...well. We'll see."
Evelyn wanted to protest, but there was little time to argue with Forte when painting subjects were squabbling and fighting on either side. At least the ceramic pieces were untouched by the powers, but a few got thrown in the arguments quickly escalating. It took a second to process the questions over the echoes, and Evelyn rubbed her forehead turning a corner.
"He has glowing yellow eyes, jeans, t-shirt with what looked like red-paint splatters on it. He touches the paintings and they just come to life. The only ones that should be alive are the ones he's touching, so if we follow the trail--" She dodged out of the way of one of the sculptures pushing it's companion off the pedestal, hitting the ground with a thundering crack. "Let's just hope we stop him before arms and armory."
A painting jumped into the path, and Evelyn ducked under it's punch, sending a kick to the back of it's knees. At least this time she was feeling more confident with herself, but her confidence only went so far. She didn't want to break any of the paintings, so her fighting was somewhat restrained. She hoped Forte would keep it together.
Then again, they just needed to catch the guy faster.

Getting tackled to the ground was typically not the best way to great someone. But considering the alternative, and considering the person who tackled her, Evelyn could think of worse options. A battle ready skilled companion was something worth having nearby when the museum was erupting into chaos, and Evelyn decided she'd ask the questions of How and why later. For the moment, there was too much to deal with. Too much, in fact, to even consider trying to get a hold of a more experienced x-men to help diffuse the situation.
Back on her feet, Evelyn reassessed what was happening. Like her tryouts, the amount of chaos kept her echoes split and made focusing difficult, so it took a second to coordinate the words for Kyle. "There's a mutant running around. Everything he touches, it comes--" She quickly side stepped as another horse galloped past, reflexes much quicker this time. It was clear she was transitioning from museum employee into training mode. "We have to stop him before any of the artwork gets damage!"
As a well dressed man struggled to free his jacket from a painted dog's jaws, she considered the other risks. "And we should probably get the patrons to safety." Her priorities may be a little confused, but the intentions were still good. Taking off down one of the hallways, she didn't wait for Kyle to follow. Knowing him, he was bound to stay close least she do something dumb.
Not that she would. Or did. Or was about to. She just needed a weapon and her fingers were crossed that no one got to the armory room yet.

The kiss on the forehead made things feel better. The reassurance that the parenting thing was going to be until the baby got returned helped even more. There were still doubts and concerns though, mostly stemming from the fact that said kids mother was AWOL, but at least it would only be for a bit, right? Better than accidentally having her own.
Her stomach churned. That was something she really didn't even want to think about at this point.
The baby gurgled back on the table, and the echoes struggled to analyze the sound. It seemed happy. That sounded right. Happy would be the cooing and the gurgling? She could do this. She could learn. "If no one on staff knows where she is I know a detective buddy who might be able to help? Guy talks to ghosts so might get news quicker." She said, no longer feeling like she was going to drown in a glass of water.
