The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

> “I am actually joining the big raid to find out if I am indeed stronger then a stalker bot, that and to help out of course.”
Sonya/Teresa nods slowly, impressed. "Well, I admire your courage, at least. I don’t mind admitting those things scare the #!@$!@ out of me. Have you seen one in action yet?"
She does her best to ignore his sniping at Syn as she leaves, but remains curious as to the backstory. "So what’s the deal with the two of you, anyway?"
> "From the people I’ve seen so far, I think I'm one of the kinder ones."
Sonya/Teresa interprets Voltaire’s comment as a sly dig at Syn, but she doesn’t seem to take it that way… which is just as well, really. In fact, Syn doesn’t really seem to be paying much attention to the conversation at all, which is, again, just as well.
She is curious as to what exactly happened between Syn and Voltaire, beyond what she can infer from Syn’s arrogance and Voltaire’s sensitivity, but raising that subject in Syn’s presence seems guaranteed to turn their thus-far harmless mutual sniping into a more active confrontation. So instead she confines herself to a private little grin in Voltaire’s direction in response.
> “The Bronx, originally” > "Hmm, I think I've been there before. Didn't like it" > "The Bronx can be fun you just have to know where to look. It’s not to kind to tourists, but if you get to know it, it can be well worth the trouble."
"Well, it’s not exactly kind to residents, either," she replies to Abyss. "Though a lot depends on what sorts of ‘kindness’ you’re in a position to demand. Which I guess is a lot like this place, now that I think about it."
Turning back to Voltaire with a firm 'changing the subject' air, she adds "Regardless… so, now that you’re here, any thoughts on what you want to do? Just hiding out from the law, or joining in on the Big Raid Any Day Now, or something else?"
> "Everybody is tensed up because of the current situation. > And of course there are a few of them who don't look very nice to me."
Sonya/Teresa chuckles at that. "Observant of you. The Resistance is full of folks who aren’t very nice." She thinks about for a second and adds, with a grin in Abyss’ direction, "Present company excepted, of course. Actually, I’m going to guess that most of the nice mutants are currently in the Camps… and probably not nearly as nice as they were two months ago. So are you the exception, Voltaire? It would be lovely to meet another nice guy around here."
> "So, where are you guys from."
"The Bronx, originally, but I’m living in the city now. Same deal as you, I guess… when I turned out to be a mutant, it turned out I wasn’t the same girl my family thought they’d known." She smiles a thin, private smile at how literally true that turns out to be.
> "Talk to squirrels?"
She almost chokes on her sandwich at the tone of Abyss’ voice. "OK, you got me: I made that part up. But I bet that’s what it would be like."
> "I am not a telepath, or at least I think not. The way I figure it, my body saves energy and unleashes it in the for of these sparks when people come to close, or under stress. It isn't exactly the most useful power you can get."
Sonya/Teresa smiles. She’s not entirely sure whether Voltaire missed the joke or is playing along, but decides to keep the rhythm going."I’ve seen worse. There was the guy whose power was to talk to squirrels, for example… wouldn’t have been so bad, except New York squirrels really don’t have anything to say besides ‘Get away from my tree!’ and ‘Got any nuts?’ Gets tedious. Besides, if you’re still new to your abilities you never know what you might be able to train them into… hell, with enough energy you might be able to short out one of those Stalker things, which is about as useful as it gets these days."
> "I am one of the new arrivals, first time for me to be among my own kind."
She nods. "Yeah, we don’t get many redheads around here. Well, there’s Abyss, of course, but in his case it’s not just his head, which hardly counts." She adds a friendly smile to make it clear that she’s just goofing. "Seriously, though, welcome. It’s nice to fit in somewhere, isn’t it? "
She finishes her sandwich with a victorious swallow and adds "So, where were you before you came here?"
> "She gets on my nerves with her arrogant behavior and the way she thinks that everybody is a toy."
Sonya shrugs at that. It’s true enough, but there seems little point in talking about it… especially in front of Syn’s brother.
That said, the more time she spends around the Syn and Abyss, the less certain she is of what’s really going on between them. Syn is nominally in charge, and she’s pretty sure Abyss would never actively mutiny or anything, but Abyss is a lot smarter than he lets on and Sonya’s pretty sure he’s got his own game going. Or, on the other hand, she contemplates with an amused grin, maybe they’ve just got a good cop/bad cop thing going on.
She raises an eyebrow at Voltaire’s introduction. "Heh. So, judging from the name and the sparks flying, I’m guessing you’re some kind of telepath, right?" She keeps an entirely deadpan expression at that, though not an especially sincere-looking one. "Anyway, nice to meet you. You a local here at the Home for Wayward Mutants, or a fellow new arrival?"
Sonya/Teresa gets a chuckle out of Abyss’s reaction to the soda. "Well, I figured it was better to err on the side of Big. Besides, you don’t have to finish it."
Listening to Syn trade barbs with the redhead turns out to be less entertaining than she’d expected, so she takes the opportunity to concentrate on making inroads into her sandwich until Syn leaves. "Hey. So, what with all the trading of veiled insults and subtle threats I never did catch your name. I’m Teresa." She extends a hand, then pauses. "Will I regret it if I shake your hand?"
> “Something to drink would be nice, thanks, whatever is fine.”
Sonya nods and heads to the cafeteria line, vaguely aware of the snarky exchange between Syn and the redhead, who have apparently met. A few minutes later she returns to Abyss’ table with a 2-liter bottle of Mountain Dew, a cup of coffee, and a primarily-roast-beef sandwich only slightly smaller than her own head.
She hands the Dew to Abyss and starts to sit down next to the redhead when a small spark flies off of his body. So instead she takes the next chair over and listens in on the conversation.
> " I am speaking with an interesting if not unpredictable stray out > here if you two want to talk to another and get your feet on more > solid ground, it'd also be fun to surprise him. Not everyone can > make pretty girls appear from voids you know."
Sonya grins at the implicit compliment, though of course it’s more directed to Teresa’s body than her own, and acknowledges the subtle hint. "Absolutely… you’re just full of surprise talents, aren’t you?"
A few moments later she steps out of Abyss’ portal and back into the cafeteria, where Abyss’ body is sitting with an unfamiliar-looking redhead. She takes a quick look at herself in a nearby mirror, relieved that she’s still wearing Teresa’s body, and waves a silent greeting. "I’ll be back in a bit," she mumbles, suddenly hungry… "Just going to grab some food. Can I bring you guys anything?"
> "No, in fact our sister doesn't have any of the same powers either."
Sonya nods to Syn, curiously. "So what can she do?" Not that Syn had been entirely helpful about explaining her own powers, but after her encounter with Naveed Sonya is prepared to understand “influential” in a somewhat broader fashion than she might otherwise. Which is a good thing to remember when dealing with her in the future.
> “We don’t have to take turns.” She’s a little distracted by the fugue that Abyss’ conversation suddenly becomes, and grins. "Apparently not! That’s neat. You’d make one heck of a barbershop quartet… um… sextet? "
> "You're bunking with Calley? Boy's got a bit more to him than I thought."
Sonya grins, only blushing a little. "Well, I admit, I wouldn't kick him out of bed for eating potato chips, even if he is a scrawny-ass white boy. Which reminds me, is anybody here feeding that boy?!? But it's not like that; he just let me crash at his place back when I was living on the streets, before Syn put me on the Order's payroll, and I've been staying there since. He sleeps on the living-room floor, believe it or not... when he sleeps there at all; mostly he's here. Or at least, that's what he says. Besides which, he's got a girlfriend! Not that he seems to care much."
She frowns and adds "Truth is, he doesn't seem to care much about other people in general. I don't really trust him, but it beats sleeping in hotels. Have you seen his apartment? I don't know who the hell his dad is, but that's quite a going-away present for the family Black Sheep. Assuming that story is even true. With Calley, it's hard to know for sure. Like I said -- not so much the trust, but he's fun to hang around with. So is Slate, in a weird Asperger's-syndrome kind of way... at least, if you don't get in between him and his current obsession." She pauses for a second, uncertainly. "You know about Slate, right?"
> "if you weren’t too attached to a form it’d be a fantastic way to make them even more paranoid then they are right now. If they thought they couldn’t even trust themselves well, that would just be amusing and as long as you were alright to give up the form you told them in it wouldn’t really matter. For instance Teresa could be simply a healer. While, what was his name, Doug? He could be a shape shifter.”
Sonya nods. "Yeah, I've thought about that. Not attached to Doug at all... I'd hate to give up Teresa, I've put a lot of work into her." The Teresa-body floating nearby looks vaguely annoyed at that, but says nothing. "And this body is my original... well, close enough, anyway... it's the one I default to when I'm not wearing anybody else's. So I'd rather nobody see it. A few folks have, but I think the only one who could make any kind of connection would be Raina, and it's pretty tenuous even there. So I'm not too worried."
She thinks about it a little before adding "Actually, I'm pretty sure Detective Kelly has figured out that there's a shapeshifter working for the Resistance, but I don't think he thinks Teresa's it. Everybody else, I'm pretty sure hasn't a clue. And I sorta like the freaking-them-out idea, but at the same time what they don't know, they can't take steps to protect against, you know?" She shrugs. "So I think I'll keep the whole thing secret for now. Except for you guys. Which reminds me, have you told anybody else?"
> "Wonderful people aye sister?"
"You two are siblings? Heh... I didn't know that." She considers making some snarky comment about being able to see the resemblance, but lets it go. To Syn, she adds "So, do you have the same powers he does?"
> "the one attempting to lecture you on genes is Mars and the other is Saturn. Pluto, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are all out and about"
Sonya nods slowly, then counts in her head. "Wait, that's only six. I can understand skipping Earth, but what about --" she stops, chuckles, shakes her head amused, and finishes "--and Neptune? Not to mention that Pluto isn't even a planet any more... was the poor guy bummed out about that?"
She thinks about it some more and adds "Wait up, though. Who's the, um... I mean, the guy I was talking to before walking in here? It isn't, um, Mars... y'all don't talk the same. Do you take turns, or what?"
> “From what I have seen of most mutations, typically your abilities > starts out at a crawl and as you learn the ins and outs of it, you will > learn to use it more proficiently and gain more impressive uses of it. > Metaphorically learning to walk, the trick is not stopping there, it > seems more of a task to learn to run and figure out what running > would mean to your particular mutation.”
Sonya chuckles. "Yeah, I guess. I think I’m still figuring out where my feet are. Or, you know, maybe I have roller skates. Or flippers." The way this Abyss talks is interestingly different from the one she knows… same body, same voice, but a different style, different inflections.
"Though it’s kinda cool to be able to talk about this stuff with somebody who actually knows about it, y’know? So far I’ve only told the two of you… everybody else who knows I’m a mutant at all thinks I’m her," she gestures in the direction of Teresa’s mind, which has gone back to floating passively in the void, "and that all I can do is heal myself. It’s hard to know who to trust, you know? That’s why I borrowed that body-builder’s body when I was at Sanctuary." It’s not exactly an apology, but it approximates one.
"And, hell, I’m sharing an apartment with Calley and I haven’t told him what I can really do. I don’t know… maybe I’m just being paranoid." She turns to include Syn in the conversation as well. " What do you think? Should I just let folks know what I can do? "
> “To answer your same question of us; Avello here as a prepubescent > adolescent, began to hear voices, six voices in fact.”
Sonya blinks in surprise at what she assumes is Abyss’ real name… or, at any event, his birth name… but doesn’t interrupt the subsequent explanation. Which it turns out isn’t really an explanation at all, but on further consideration she decides it’s probably as much of an explanation as Abyss himself has. Questions like ‘why are there seven of you living in a weird void that only you can open up portals into?’, or ‘why can you change shape and steal memories from people’, etc. don’t really seem to have answers.
"So… do you prefer Avello, or Abyss? And doesn’t it get confusing if there’s seven of you with the same name?"
> “You could pull it off in your male form, the bodybuilder.”
“Mm. Yeah, except I think I lost that one. I mean, I can’t get that body back… I’ve forgotten it, or wiped it out, or however that works.” She’s a little embarrassed at the admission of how little she understands her own power. “It’s hard to tell, really… I was surprised when it turned out I could get Teresa’s body back. And I’ve been able to hold on to Doug’s, too. But I don’t really understand how this ability works. I’ve only had it for a few months, it keeps surprising me.”
> “If you will indulge me a personal question, why is it you have two Minds?”
Sonya looks around at the new voice – or, rather, the familiar voice from the new location -- and stares in surprise at the second Abyss. “I could ask you the same thing, I guess?” she responds, as the Teresa-body simultaneously responds “She doesn’t.”
Sonya stares at Teresa in even greater surprise. She’d been startled to find both bodies in this not-space, but Teresa hadn’t really moved or done anything since she’d arrived, and she’d sort of forgotten about her.
“Um… yeah. Like I said, I don’t really understand how this works. I copy minds as well as bodies, sorta. Or parts of minds. Or something. That’s Teresa over there… my real name’s Sonya. Or, well… maybe that’s not real either, but it’s the realest name I’ve got. So I guess I’ve got her mind in here somewhere… and in here it comes out?” She sounds just as perplexed as she in fact is. “Like I said, I don’t really know how it works.”
"A couple of women, asian enforcer, scientist guy. Gotcha." Sonya is surprised by the wealth of visual information that comes along with the vague descriptions… there are certain advantages to meeting in this weird pseudo-space, after all.
She is also surprised that Syn hasn’t made more progress at identifying these people herself, with everyone cooped up in one building like this… and blushes slightly when she realizes that thought was also broadcast. There are, it seems, also certain disadvantages to this space. Sorry. Just thinking out loud…
Abyss’s suggestion of building a real mutant community catches her attention, and she nods in pleased surprise at the idea of Cameron and Kai as super-farmers. Sonya herself had primarily been recruiting with an eye towards combat troops and saboteurs, looking ahead to the Camp rescue... but Abyss was clearly looking further ahead than that, making plans for what to do with the rescued. And good plans, at that.
"Dude… don’t take this the wrong way," she responds with a genuine smile, "but you’re a lot smarter than you look. That makes all kinds of sense. I mean, when I first got here I wasn’t looking to join any kind of secret mutant organization or anything, I just wanted somewhere to live, you know? If it hadn’t been for the government attacking and stuff, I probably wouldn’t be working with y’all in the first place. I bet most mutants are like that. "
> “I can tell you about several of the kabal members and some > of the members of the mansion people now or later if you like”
Sonya nods enthusiastically. "Now would be good, actually. The more I know going in, the faster I can find out new stuff… and this weird semi-telepathic thing you’ve got going on in here is pretty useful."
(( OOC: Don’t feel obliged to actually summarize everything IC for Sonya, if that’s tedious… you can just say something like “Abyss fills Sonya in on what he knows” IC and let me know OOC who you mention; I can read up to find out what Abyss knows about them. That said, IC brainstorming about the Kabal might be fun.))
> “also I will give you my number before all this is said and done, > if things get dangerous for you call me and I will relieve whatever > worries you have.”
"Sounds good! I try to avoid getting into fights in the first place, but it’s always good to have backup. Thanks." She’s initially surprised by how profoundly relieved she is by the offer, but given how physically dangerous her new line of work is shaping up to be it actually isn’t that surprising.
Sonya nods. "OK. Super-fighter, charismatic, connected. Got it. So, I'm gonna have to keep a low profile as I check him out.. which means this is gonna take a while."
She thinks about it some more, trying to figure out how to even get started, and adds "Who do we know works for him, besides Kaz? Maybe more important, who do we know works _against_ him? Being able to coordinate efforts with somebody would come in handy."
Another thought occurs to her. "Has anybody ever tried zapping his mind? He might go down fast in front of someone like Naveed -- you remember, Syn, the mind-controller guy I phoned you about from Kelly's apartment, his girlfriend's brother. He's a complete nutjob, way too volatile to trust if you ask me, but that mind-control trick of his is worth something."
> " as for the twin boys, I'd like to give them a second chance if its all the same to you."
Sonya shrugs, assuming he's asking Syn. "They seemed friendly enough initially, they're just really touchy. Send someone diplomatic. And, like I said, you probably don't want to mention my name."
> "find out as much about Hunter as possible. He seems to know alot about > everyone and everything else, but not much is known about him and I want > to change that. More specifically I want to know where his weakness lies."
Sonya nods slowly... she has a lot of questions, but isn't quite sure how to formulate them yet, so she just listens for a while as Syn explains what the Resistance is up to.
> "He has claimed to have some of his people placed in positions within the > camp so that he has info on the inside. I'm not sure who they are or how > many people he has there so be careful if you go back."
She nods again, still just taking everything in. In some ways it's a relief -- if the Resistance already has agents in place in the Camps, then her own relative ineffectualness in making contact with the inmates is less of a problem -- but she also finds the sudden awareness of her redundancy somewhat annoying.
> "Those who are on our side are the twins Amp and Vibe, my brother Abyss, > two girls who have darkness powers names Overcast and Omen, Isabel is another. > I'm not sure if she was taken to the camp or not."
"Yeah, Isabel was taken in. Haven't seen her inside the Camps yet, but I saw her being processed the day of the raid. She took a few police down in the process, though."
> "The three I would keep an eye out for are Isabel, Werecat and Amp."
She nods again, out of habit. "I've seen Sara in the Camps... she's not in great shape, truth to tell, but she's got some friends who are keeping an eye on her as best they can. I'll keep an eye out for the others too."
> "Also, I've spoken with a man named Kami who is here in the labs. > One more who I'm still unsure about is named Horus. The problem > with him is that he seems to have two personalities within him."
Sonya doesn't even need the local telepathy-in-the-air thing to read Teresa's response to that one. "Yeah. Lot of that going around. Calley has a touch of the schizo, too... I've been staying in his apartment for a while now, it's been interesting. Actually, at first I thought he was one of yours, given how comfortable he seemed at the Sanctuary, but I guess not... what's his story, anyway?"
Once Syn finishes her actually quite useful rundown on the Order members -- made surprisingly more so by the strange properties of this strange space, which allowed images and impressions to be broadcast as well as simple language -- Sonya returns to her earlier thoughts.
"So, you want me to investigate this Hunter guy? OK, I can do that. It would help if you can tell me what you already know, so I don't waste time repeating it. You say "his weakness" as though he hasn't got many... what can he do?"
