The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Aadi listened to the kid struggle to explain his ability, not really understanding what he was trying to say right away. After all, she'd actually only met Carragail so far: she'd never really met any mutant with a 'bad' mutation, an immoral one. As such, she was about to get the shock of her life.
>> "Well, I can't really demonstrate... but only because in order to use my mutation you'd have to get me to... erm... cry."
An ability triggered by sadness? She frowned in concern as the boy said that. She'd had her power triggered by several things in the few years since it appeared, but not sadness. Sadness grounded her. So an ability that did the exact opposite...already it didn't sound that pleasant.
>> "BUT!...you're actually looking at the fruit of said mutation."
And then he motioned to the demon dogs, and Aadi was lost again, not understanding. Her lips moved slightly as she translated in her head. Okay, she was sure she had translated that right, so the language barrier wasn't what was confusing her. It was the sentence itself. But luckily the boy was continuing, hopefully to explain further.
As the explanation continued, and he introduced each dog, Aadi began to get a very, very bad feeling. Dying dogs...dying or dead dogs...and a mutant ability. An ability that healed? No, that wasn't quite right, she knew it wasn't as soon as he'd said it. Those dogs weren't healed. They were like black statues with ruby eyes, no spirit in them, no energy. They weren't even like dogs on a job, the ones trained not to wag their tails or submit to a good scratch while on duty. They were...statues. Moving statues.
His healing had consequences. And those consequences were what happened to these dogs.
Aadi's hand was over her mouth in horror as that fully sunk in. She almost missed the boy saying his name, Miles, just looking down at the poor dogs who had been saved from death in the worst way possible.
There was little she could say to that. Only... "How could you do that to them?" she whispered.

(( OOC: Sorry for my long absence >< School's kicking my ass right now ))
She didn't remember. Aadi's shoulders slumped at that, the hopeful expression turning into disappointment. If Carragail had been able to remember where it was, Aadi would have gone to visit as soon as she could. But there wasn't even a name.
Looking up from the table to ask if Carragail at least remembered the name of the place, Aadi was just in time to see the floating hot chocolate drop back to the table. "Estie tabarnac de câlisse—" She jumped when she saw some of the hot liquid land on Carragail. "Are you okay? I'm so, so sorry— I was just happy, and I didn't notice—" She stammered, accent garbling half her words as she got napkins out of the table-side dispenser for Carragail. "I'm very sorry, are you hurt? Here."

Blinking repeatedly, Aadi burst out in laughter at the sudden excitement. Well obviously the dog wanted some treats. She wondered when the last time he'd been fed was...maybe some food was in order too. She just really couldn't stand a hungry animal, especially dogs. If he was a stray, then he wasn't getting as much food as he needed. Just the imprint of ribs underneath fur and skin made that obvious.
"Okay! That is what we will do," She beamed happily at the dog, standing up and dusting the grass off her pants. Obviously, she wouldn't be able to take care of this dog...but oh, how she wanted to...would it be that hard to sneak him into her dorms, really? She used the back door often...and there was no one watching it in the daytime, just during the night. She and her roommate had a suite...it was sort-of big. And as long as she walked the dog regularly...she had time, right?
Somehow, Aadi had already made up her mind. She was going to bring this stray home and take care of him, and shower him with love and affection. And she wouldn't be alone anymore.
Picking up her pack on the ground and slinging it over her shoulder, draping the blanket she'd been lying on over one arm. "Envoye, let's go get some treats," She grinned at the dog. To make sure he followed, she scooted up the stick and walked away with it, whistling softly. There was a store not far from here, she'd bought treats for her dogs and shipped them back there before.

When the response to her admission seemed to be positive rather than negative, Aadi released the breath she was holding. Even so, she couldn't help but glance around through the corners of her eyes to make sure no one was staring at them oddly. She didn't want to find out how ordinary people would react to mutants, especially in large numbers.
The teen's train of thought seemed to be similar, because he motioned for her to follow him. His mutant dogs also got up and trailed after him, so she hurried to not be left behind. She was still curious about the dogs after all. When they stopped, they appeared far enough back from the main traffic area to avoid being overheard, the stiffness in her shoulders easing.
What the boy said after that still surprised her, even if she should have been expecting it by now.
>> "I am a mutant as well. It's difficult being one because the average person doesn't always understand, but it always feels good to know you're not the only one."
Oh, Aadi could agree with that statement whole-heartedly, and she nodded along with what he was saying. Besides Carragail, she hadn't met another mutant here, nor back home in Montreal. No...it definitely felt good to know there were others out there. Including one right in front of her.
>> "Now about my dogs, you shouldn't worry about them, but..." he said, giving a long pause that made one of Aadi's eyebrows twitch. "...I won't say a single word until you tell me what can you do."
Go figure. Aadi would be a little put off, if she wasn't so excited to meet someone else like her. And answering wouldn't take too much explanation, even if she didn't exactly want to demonstrate with them still pretty-much in the public eye.
"I can do a change in gravity," She said after taking a moment to piece that sentence together. "Like this." Quickly glancing around, she lifted her hands to waist-level and concentrated. Lifting her arms wasn't exactly needed, but she found channeling what she wanted to do that way helped her from losing control and drifting off. Which happened far too often anyways.
She lifted just a few inches off the ground, enough to show she was doing something, before quickly putting herself back down. Taking a moment's breather, she turned to the teen with expectant eyes. "And you?"

Aadi was beginning to wonder if she would have to repeat the question when the answer finally came. And when it did, she had to do a double-take to make sure she translated that properly in her head. "Y--Yeah. The school...I go to. It's a mutant-only school...so I'm told. So there's...like...a hundred people right there. G--Give or take."
A mutant-only school? Such a place existed?
"...Heh?" Aadi's eyes must have been as wide as saucers. "A school for people like us? That is real? Where is it?"
Others like them, in the city. Not just that, but a whole school of them. Aadi felt her mood lift just like that. She wasn't alone.

(( OOC: Sorry for the long absence! We're finally all moved in /o\ ))
Aadi watched with a gleeful grin as the dog chased after the stick, almost steamrolling over it. Already she was in love with the stray. A dog...that's what she's been missing all this time in New York, a dog who wouldn't judge her for her awkward english or call her names for liking girls, or even run away screaming the instant she started floating away.
When the german shepherd returned, she laughed when the stick was dropped on her foot. Crouching down to pick it up, she reached out and scratched behind the dog's ears. "Quelle jolie garçon..." (What a nice boy) She looked over him, spotting a few scarred patches hidden under his fur. "If only I had some treats for you," She pouted at the dog. "I do not guess that you would follow me to the dog store?"

Aadi's expression was one big question mark when the teen suddenly interrupted the conversation to complain loudly about his clothes. Oh, she winced when she noticed the mess his ice cream had made. At least it would come off easily, but the sooner he changed the better. At the same time, she was miffed, because she really did want an answer and this kid was avoiding giving it to her. Had this been taking place in a language she was comfortable with, she would have told him in no uncertain terms to stop trying to sidetrack her and just answer the damn question.
Sighing and straightening as she prepared to have to ask again (and again, if necessary), Aadi blinked when the teen suddenly switched back to the previous conversation on his own after an awkward trailing off. He'd lowered his voice too.
>> "About the animals... why do you want to know? Any reason in particular you want to know about mutant.... dogs?
Now he was eyeing her suspiciously, and it was making Aadi nervous. Had that been too close of a question? Had it given her away? But then again...if this kid was the dogs' owner, and he was admitting they were mutants somehow, maybe he wouldn't freak out if she admitted she was a mutant as well. Or maybe he would. But lowering his voice was a good sign, right?
"I am interested...because..." Aadi sighed in frustration. I am worried for them, and I am a...une mutante...too."

Aadi watched as Carragail seemed to panic at noticing the glowing under her skin. So it wasn't completely voluntary then, just like her gravity field. Obviously Carragail didn't want others to know about what she could do any more than Aadi did.
Nodding slowly at the answer to her question, Aadi thought about that. So this girl had gotten her ability...mutation...whatever, younger than Aadi had. She'd only gotten it herself at 18, and she'd been fresh out of high school...Quebec high schools finished a year earlier than the rest of North America.
"I was eighteen when I got my power," Aadi smiled at her, hoping continued conversation could help her calm down again. If she kept stuttering, Aadi would need a translator to understand what she was saying. "Do you know of other people who can do like us too?" She was curious now. They couldn't be the only ones.

>> "I think the word you're looking for is misunderstanding. And...I most certainly do."
That was a relief, Aadi relaxing. "Thank you," she murmured with a smile. Besides the fact she didn't have many friends here in New York yet, she didn't have any friends like her, with strange powers. She didn't want to mess this up, at all.
There was silence for a moment, Aadi continuing to cool down her hot chocolate with soft blows. The steady thrum of rain against the window was a little soothing, and she was finally warming up a little. How long would the rain continue though? She didn't have an umbrella (stupid mistake), and didn't want to get soaked again on her way to the subway.
>> "So...why N--New York?" Aadi looked up at Carragail's question. "I mean...I'm sure there's plenty of ot--other cooking schools...out there. Why here?"
The young woman tilted her head slightly to one side, thinking about that. "I got a scholarship for the school here, so it made it easy. I just wanted to go somewhere outside my province." Away from her family. "I can also practice my english," she chuckled. That was when she noticed the soft glow emitting from Carragail's skin, coaxing a gentle smile out of her.
"I wanted to ask before, but...when did you first do that?" Aadi motioned slightly at her glowing skin.

Aadi listened to the teenager try to reassure her, watching the dogs spin around in circles with a sense of unease. Yes, they were acting as dogs should, chasing their tails and the like, but something was... wrong, off with the movements. She couldn't put her finger on it, but as a dog owner, something was just...missing.
They were obedient, yes. Dogs could be trained to be that obedient. But where was the enthusiasm, the eagerness to please, the 'I did what you said so can I have a cookie now' attitude? No tail wags. No doggy grins. Nothing.
Other people around them were avoiding walking too close, some watching what was going on. Aadi was just too disturbed to tell the kid she wasn't interested in watching demon dogs perform parlor tricks and leave. Then the boy's last sentence caught her attention.
>> "I'm sorry if they scared you but they can't help the glow in their eyes because... well, because they're mutant dogs."
"Mutant dogs?" Aadi had to clarify, shocked. "C'est...how is it possible, I thought—" she glanced at the people around them uneasily, lowering her voice. "I thought only people could be mutant," she said quietly, looking from the boy to the dogs. "What happened to them?"

(( Ohh fun!! Thanks for the permission ))
Aadi laughed loudly, watching the dog splash through puddles running after the stick. What an uplifting sight. Dogs were an instant mood-lifter...it didn't take much to make them happy, as this proved. Just a stick and someone to throw it. If only people could be happy just as easily.
So what if this was a stray. He was a friendly stray, who wanted to play, and that was all that mattered. Though she wondered what had happened to him.
She wasn't given much more time to ponder it, because the German Shepherd was bounding back with the stick half-hanging out of his mouth and tail going a mile a minute. It was just like her dogs, particularly her golden retriever Balou: his tail wagged his whole body.
"Good boy," Aadi grinned, reaching out to take the stick from the dog's mouth. Except the dog was pulling back, the stick nearly slipping out of Aadi's grip before she used both hands. "Ça va être comme ça, hein? (It's going to be that way, huh?)"
Digging her feet in, Aadi pulled with all her might, the dog growling playfully and pulling back with his rear up in the air. Aadi grinned widely, giving silly little growls back as she ended up dragging the dog back a few paces, teasing him by wiggling the stick a little.
Then suddenly the dog had let go, and Aadi yelped as she landed on her rear in the wet grass. Laughing, she held the stick up out of reach before tossing it again.

>> "Th--Th--Thank you for helping m--me," Carragail was saying, Aadi smiling and shaking her head a little. No thanks had been needed, it was her fault the younger girl was in this whole mess to begin with. She got too carried away sometimes. Watching the burn cream be applied, Aadi was glad that at least seemed to be working fine. She picked up her cup of hot chocolate, blowing on it softly. Just because she was frozen from the rain didn't mean she wanted to burn her tongue, and just holding the cup in her hands was warmth enough.
>> "L--Look, I'm sorry I--I...freaked out...a lit--little. I k--kind of have...issues...with touching. M--M--My apologies."
Blinking at that as she translated it in her head, Aadi frowned in understanding. Ahh...that would explain more. At least she knew what she was doing wrong now: Aadi could cling to people all day and would be no worse for wear, she hardly noticed the simple things like holding hands or bumping shoulders anymore. She must have terrified poor Carragail.
"No, I am the one that is sorry, I didn't realize," Aadi shook her head. "I did not want to scare you. Can you forgive me my...ehm...not understanding?" She'd forgotten the english word for what she wanted to say. Ah well. Hopefully her sincerity would get across either way.

Looking from one guy to the other, Aadi resisted throwing something at the head of the one who didn't even bother answering her directly, instead talking to his companion. “Bring her or don’t bring her, I don’t care. Though whatever you do choose fast.” Fine, the world ending had resulted in people losing their manners too, she got that. But was it so hard to talk to her face?
>> "If you want to come with us you can. But we're going to be moving fast," The younger of the two said to her then, and though the kid didn't seem much friendlier than the first, Aadi would take what she got. Neither of them had said where they were going, or even answered her question really, but yeah...better than nothing. And there was a whole lot of nothing everywhere else. Even if they ended up being complete psychopaths, at least she'd have company for a while. And she did know how to deal with psychopaths.
So Aadi followed after them, quickening her pace. She didn't say thank you, just like they didn't bother with saying anything else to her. Truthfully, she was just glad she wasn't going to be walking alone with her own thoughts for company. Even if these two looked about as companionable as statues.

Aadi stayed up at the front of the coffee shop for a while, shivering a little against the chill as she waited for the barista to return with some cream she'd said they carried in a first aid kit. Apparently burns weren't all that uncommon in a coffee shop. She'd guessed so, since she'd seen more than enough burns in the restaurant she worked in. Watching chefs hop around the kitchen cussing at a burned finger was only entertaining for the first ten seconds, then everyone just wanted them to shut up.
When the barista returned, Aadi thought for a moment before paying for something else. Maybe this would help make it up to Carragail. Or make her hate Aadi even more, knowing her luck.
At least the barista serving her was cute. And around her age. Aadi would have probably taken the chance to flirt a bit (or at least find out if she liked girls), but yeah, company. She took the café's business card as a reminder, tucking it into her purse.
Four minutes later, she returned to the booth Carragail had settled in with the burn cream and two hot chocolates. "Ehm...Carragail?" She placed the hot chocolates down on the table, along with the cream.

There was something blocking out the sun overhead. Something that was moving, and Aadi winced a little at getting first shade, then the sun blasted in her eyes again, then shade once more. Curious, she cracked her eyes open to see just what had interrupted her sun-time.
A dog.
A large, gorgeous German Shepherd, with a wagging tail and a dopey, doggy grin. And a stick.
Startled, Aadi sat up. Was she seeing things? She looked around for the owner, but there was not a soul in sight. "Hi! where is your owner, huh?" She noticed then there was no collar to be seen, no identification. Was this a stray then?
"You want to play?" Aadi grinned, looking down at the stick. It was a no brainer, really. Before she could even think about being approached by a stray dog, she had stood and picked up the stick. "Attrapez-le!" She threw the stick as hard as she could across the clearing.
