The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Maybe it hadn't been the smartest to challenge a strange mutant to a race when she didn't have the most comprehensive idea of what, exactly, he could do with his powers, but Skydancer couldn't really help her competitive spirit. Maybe she should have at least tried to get an idea of just how fast he could travel in his smoke form, but what's down was done and she couldn't exactly go back on the challenge now.
If Sylas was going to offer Skydancer a minute of head start, she wasn't about to say no to that. When it came to competition, she had a sense of honour about it but that honour didn't prevent her from taking advantage of any beneficial situation that came her way. Besides, this was something of a competition of mutant powers and she didn't have much of an idea of what, exactly, he was capable of.
"Go!" Skydancer called out. At the moment of the utterance, she jumped, allowing the tube attached to the nearby building to carry her from the building she was currently on, to the next building. From there it was a case of running, jumping and swinging, navigating from one building to the next. It was much more complicated than flight, she was certain, but it was also both exhilarating and challenging in a way she couldn't imagine flight being. She travelled faster than a regular human would travel, though admittedly not nearly as fast as a bird might. Still, win or lose it was this sort of competition that made her love her power all the more.

How was it that such hatred to exist in people? Why couldn't they just leave the two of them alone, who hadn't harmed anyone? Clearly her own upbringing had left her with an unfortunate naivety of the world; she whose family had always been so accepting of her mutant aunt. Maybe her family wasn't perfect, but why couldn't some people be more like them? It made no sense to hold such hatred in their hearts, no sense at all that she could see.
Suddenly Skydancer realized just how close to tears she really was. She remembered what it was like when her brother had been so brutally murdered, simply because he was related to a pair of mutants. This was like that, only worse because there were so many more of them and none of them were willing, or perhaps even capable, of listening to reason. With effort, she quashed the tears. Now was not the time for a breakdown, not when their lives were still in danger.
"Keep moving," Skydancer agreed, her voice tired. The brief rest wasn't nearly enough but what choice did she have but to keep moving? Nor did the woman with her seem to have any more energy than she did. At least Skydancer had the advantage of being a pique athlete, she had no idea what the other woman's background was or how much effort it actually took to fly.
It wasn't possible to go any higher and thus Skydancer knew she had to move across. She pointed at the building across the alley from them. Tubes out to catch her landing, she took a running start and jumped from the building she was currently on, onto the next building. One tube wrapped itself around a protruding satellite dish, causing a rather disturbing creak as the anchor barely held, and two more hit the platform, cushioning the landing for the rest of her body. She barely stopped before aiming for the next building, in hopes of getting far enough from the mob down below that by the time they made it to the rooftop the two of them would be so far away they wouldn't be able to follow.

Skydancer should have been overwhelmed by the whole thing, from all the strange mutants around her to the fact that she was thousands of miles away from where she was only moments before. The tranquil atmosphere of the strange little island and the welcome of the Doorman, not to mention the fact that all the mutants around her seemed likewise welcoming served to all but eliminate any discomfort she would have otherwise felt. A nagging voice at the back of her mind kept telling her that she really should be more careful and keep her awareness about her, but that voice was easily quashed.
"I am a New Yorker," Skydancer answered the charming red giant with a smile. "Well, not originally but I've been there for a few months now." She didn't pick up on any of the tension between the red giant and Aedus. The fine interplay of social interactions had never been her strong suite and given the unusual circumstances, she was less inclined than usual to realize what might have been going on.
"So we're free to stay here and relax," Skydancer asked the Doorman. It still seemed a bit too good too be true, but then again so had The Mansion and so far that had panned out. "And to leave whenever we want to?" Sunbathing seemed like a wonderful idea. While she couldn't tan, neither could she burn so it came down to the pure enjoyment of the sun beaming down upon her.

I really like this idea. Juka will have gone through something similar during his time away, although that was more of a rich independent individual wanting the secret to eternal youth. Still, could always be a part of something bigger that he wasn't aware of at the time. Its something I find interesting for sure.

Apologies for my absence that last few days. Life decided to be extremely busy followed by suspending last night. The suspension was amazing, but required a day or two of relaxation and recovery afterwards. I have hopes that my muse will be back and strong tomorrow.

Skydancer was just finishing a very long night. With her impending live début with the circus, her all ready long hours of training were becoming even longer and it wasn't until after midnight that she finally arrived back at The Mansion. She yawned, feeling physically exhausted. It was a good feeling to give everything she had towards an art she was coming to love and one that not many people really seemed to appreciate.
After a quick trip to the kitchen for a quick snack, bed was the thing that was most prominently on Skydancer's mind. One of the best things about having a workout that took everything out of you was the wonderful sleep that inevatebly followed. In her experience, she found it difficult to sleep if she didn't have some level of physical exertion beforehand.
The fire alarm went off. Of course the fire alarm had to go off mere minutes before Skydancer was actually going to get a fantastic night's sleep. That was her first thought. Her second thought was, oh crap the fire alarm is going off in a building full of mutant teenagers one of which may have lost control of their powers and/or tried to burn the Mansion down. That was not a good thought.
Having no idea what to do in this sort of situation and feeling the first trickles of panic, Skydancer did the first thing she could think of and that was to start walking down the hallway in search of someone who had a better idea what to do than she did.

"You don't have to go to school," Skydancer replied. "I don't. And its not too far." Or at least it wasn't too far for her. When travelling from place to place, she tended to move a bit faster than a regular human, swinging from rooftop to rooftop.
"As for keeping up," Skydancer grinned. She was used to people just knowing she was a mutant due to her skin, but because of the dim light, she got the impression that he hadn't figured that out. That, and he must have missed her earlier display with her tubes. "I think I can manage to keep up." A mischievous expression settled across her face. So what if he could turn into smoke and fly around, she had tricks of her own.
"Living of scraps isn't fun for anyone," Skydancer agreed, cringing. She watched his display of his own power and was admittedly impressed. It was clear that there could be any number of advantages in being able to, not only control smoke but transform into it as well. Still, she was content with her own abilities.
"Pleasure to meet you Sylus. You can call me Skydancer." Three purple tubes burst out of her skin at the words, two from her front torso and one from her back. One of the tubes was sent out and grabbed a hole of a nearby pipe. "Care to see if you can keep up with me?" She waited, poised to move the moment he gave his ascent.

There was safety in height. Skydancer would probably never have true flight, not in the way her current companion had, but that didn't mean she was limited to the ground. Up high, very few people could get at her, either to bother her or to do her harm. Most people were afraid to be so far above everything because there was the constant risk of falling, but even before becoming a mutant Skydancer had never known that particular fear. This was where she belonged, not down there with the rest of them.
The higher the two of them went the more the mob down below faded away. It was more than the noise and chaos of the streets; for Skydancer there was a very real catharsis in the act as well. While it took her more effort to ascend to the clouds than it did the other woman, through use of her mutation it took her far less than a regular human. For that matter, she wasn't even certain a regular human could ascend from the outside of the building as she could. Her tubes made it possible to scale a couple stories at a time, rather than having to go through the time and effort of placing a foot upon every one of the hundreds of rungs of the ladders. Maybe she would never experience true flight, but she had the next best thing.
Only when they finally reached the top of the skyscraper did Skydancer allow herself to relax and sit, her tubes retracting back into her skin. She wasn't sure if the mob would eventually figure out how to get up from the inside of the building or if they would even bother, but she figured they at least had a little bit of time.
"I think I'm all right," Skydancer replied, her voice shaking slightly. She was shook up from the experience and not ashamed to admit it. "Are you?"

Looking at the miserable little ball that was the shifting mutant, Skydancer couldn't help but feel rather bad for him. She didn't feel too bad of course, after all he had caused both her and the wannabe hero boy no end of trouble and physical harm, but she did feel some sympathy. Now, if only he'd stay in his curled up unhappy position instead of attacking, she'd feel a whole lot better about the entire situation. Whatever damage she did to him he brought on himself so, feeling sorry or not, she wasn't about to try and help him fix something that was really his own fault.
Skydancer heard her curled up opponent grunt which she took as some sort of affirmation of having heard her, though weather he actually understood her words was another question entirely. However, he no longer appeared to be making any offensive moves which she was taking as a good sign, unless proven otherwise. She was pretty sure she hadn't done too serious damage to him with the stabbing, though even that was difficult to be certain. With mutants, it was sometimes unpredictable how fragile or sturdy they were. She was the perfect example of someone who could be seriously injured or even die from wounds that would otherwise only be moderately serious to a human.
Skydancer was glad to hear that her rescuee was relatively unharmed. "I wouldn't mind going home myself. Can I escort you? Just in case anything else should jump out of the shadows at you?" She tried for a smile, though it came out a little strained. "I think he'll probably let us go peacefully now." She gestured back at their prone enemy.

Skydancer thought it was probably for the best that Allison not be left alone for the time being, especially given her rather unstable reaction to the events of the day. She didn't exactly blame her for the hysterical laughter, but she couldn't help but feel her esteem for the other woman go down a notch. Between the events with the slug mutants and now this, she just didn't seem like a particularly capable person. It wasn't a reason to feel negatively towards her, of course, but it did mean she needed protection and, probably, a safe place to stay.
"I don't have much planned today. I was probably just going to go back home to The Mansion? You're both welcome to join me, if you like. Have you seen the place?"
Kitra, at least, seemed like a capable and confident individual able to take care of herself. Maybe when things had calmed down a bit, Skydancer might be able to inquire a bit more about the details of her own power. T he paper whip was rather impressive, after all.

Skydancer took it as a good sign that the man was willing to trust her enough to actually allow her to see his face. While the smoke still obscured some of the finer details, she could now make out some of his broader features. He was older than she was, that was quite clear, although she knew appearances could sometimes be deceiving depending on how long he had spent homeless. The streets, if one was there long enough, had a tendency to prematurely age people.
Skydancer could see that she had caught the mutant's attention before any further words even came out of his mouth. There was a certain look that a person had when they didn't have a proper place to sleep that appeared in their eyes when an actual bed was mentioned as a possibility. It was a look she was certain she had when Aura and Saph had first come to her with promises of shelter. Suspicion had surely been in her eyes too, at that time. It seemed like a lifetime ago, even though it was really only a few months.
"The place is usually just called The Mansion. Technically its a school for mutants, but its also a sort of shelter even for those of us who aren't students. Really, there are people of all ages staying there. Its not a centre for drug addiction or a psych ward, at least not that I've ever been able to tell."
It was difficult to really get across just how wonderful The Mansion truly was, especially not without making him even more suspicious. Or perhaps it was only she who was overly suspicious of something that appeared to be too good to be true, which The Mansion certainly had. Although, as far as she had been able to tell, it actually was true as shocking as that still as to her sometimes.
