The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Rebecca was trying to see things from Maya's perspective, and it was disappointingly easy. When Agnes wanted to seek out her mysterious missing brother, Rebecca was the one to get protective in an attempt to shield a woman she loved from potential danger. Cult and everything. So she could not say she would have acted differently than Maya in her shoes.
But there was a difference between letting someone go and doing things right. Despite not being on the X-Men, Becca would hate for the team to lose so much of its legitimacy in the public eye over a scandal of human rights. The right wing pundits would swarm all over news like that. The team still meant something to her, but Maya's words were a punch in the gut. It was not her team. That was Rebecca's choice. It was not something wrong to say, but she hated the way Maya said it.
At least Maya seemed to catch herself once it left her lips. Becca glared until Maya apologized. She hated this fight; they had never had one like this before. Even now, she wanted to be gentle and say something about Maya being mindful of her antlers, but the mood was all wrong to joke. There was a first time for everything.
"Ah know trustin' anyone else with her must be hard for ye, but handlin' supernatural... concerns is literally SUPER's job." And damn Maya and Sam for making Rebecca justify SUPER. But despite everything, and despite all Aoife did to her, Rebecca still felt the need to protect her sister. "If this wasnae personal, you'd have handled this differently. Instead, ye have her locked away in secret. And if she did fuck with Sam's head... weel, we've both seen how dark things can gie when Sam's in a dark place." She did not want to spell it out, but part of Rebecca did worry what could happen if Aoife was left alone with an angry Sam. She hoped, even in Maya's anger, that she would not want that.
"It's nae my team anymore," she finally agreed, her voice cooler than she expected. She was containing herself, but literal sparks were starting to pop from her skin as emotional exhaustion was weakening her passive resistance to mystic energy. "But Ah'll report ye all the same. Ye caught your criminal. But mah sister deserves due process, like any criminal."
Exhaling slowly, focusing on channeling her energy to avoid some kind of Wild Magic outburst, Becca looked to her feet. "Ah dinnae hate ye, Maya. Ah couldnae hate ye and ye know it." They just saw this problem from two different sides, and that was not an issue they were going to resolve in a night.

Rebecca wanted to approach this with a clear head, but she could not wrap her head around the choices Maya and Sam made holding her sister off the books. They were allowed to investigate the cult's goings-on and when Aoife confronted them, they had the right to fight her and apprehend her. It was the choices they made after capturing her that disappointed Becca.
Before she interjected, what Aoife did to Sam gave Rebecca pause. She knew what it was like to be mind-whammied by Aoife, but whatever she did to Sam was clearly worse. Rebecca felt a sense of second-hand guilt, as though she was tangentially responsible for Aoife's actions.
That guilt only stalled her for one pregnant pause before she retaliated. "Ah know, Ah know; Aoife's done... reprehensible things. Things she needs tae be held accoontable for. But that's nae excuse tae gie doon tae her level. You're supposed tae be better than th' villains, Maya." Her tone was stern, but she softened enough to admit, "Ah know what she did tae Kalos and Ah has... weighed on ye. Your anger is valid."
The softness evaporated as Rebecca found her stride, reminding herself what Maya did. "But tae let your feelings convince ye tae lock a captive up off the grid? Dae ye realize if that got out, the X-Men could lose their deputized status? Your legitimacy. Ye hae a cult tryin' tae turn people against mutants, and yer pulling this shit, Maya?"
Rebecca huffed. "Ah'm talkin' tae mah sister, then we're transferrin' her tae SUPER containment. Dorn't make me report mah own damn team." Her former team, she reminded herself silently.

Rebecca let go of Maya.
She was incredulous. Clearly she misheard her wife because her and Sam wouldn't do that.
Except Maya was not a liar. No, that was not her sin. "What were ye thinkin?! That cannae be legal," she snapped, her accent thick with frustration. "Ah dinnae care abit hoo ye caught her right noo. Ye're holdin' someain withit givin' two shits over due process. Oh, nae 'someain,' sorry; mah sister, Maya."
A lot of feelings were buzzing in Becca's chest. She had a new respect for Agnes and her hive. "Ah leave the team an' noo thes is hoo the X-Men operate?"

Okay, that did cause an obvious reaction. Rebecca furrowed her brows, and most of a sentence slipped from her lips. "Ye went efter mah sist--" Becca took a deep breath to rationalize.
In the interest of communication and transparency, she did did that out loud. "Okay. She's part of the Cult and she's involved with whatever crimes they have a hand in," she reasoned, still holding onto Maya's arms, but her voice was clearly still tense.
Another deep breath. "Ah want tae see her. Where is she bein' held? SUPER?" She could focus on the bright side; if he sister was contained there, Becca could ask hard questions and see if she could get answers she wanted.

Rebecca was, by her nature, an affectionate person. Video calls and romantic gestures from halfway across the globe were sweet and sustained her, but she missed this. She missed the warmth of her wife wrapped in her arms. And yes, she missed making love to her partner after their longest hiatus since they moved in together. After a grand journey of self-discovery, she wanted to come back to something familiar and tender and full of love.
A few weeks of distance did not make Rebecca forget her lover's body. She knew something was amiss before Maya said anything. She did not immediately relax into Rebecca's arms; there was still tension in her core.
The warning was surprising, because it sounded so unbelievable. Rebecca did not let go of Maya, but she did let her turn so they could be facing one another. If Maya had something serious to say, she could say it to her face.
Running through potential options, she could not make sense of hating Maya. The children were both safe and Maya was doing her best to help Kalos. She was not going to get upset with Maya for making difficult decisions as an X-Man. So what was this about? "Maya... we can talk about anythin, love. Ah couldnae hate ye. Ah dinnae have that in me. So tell me; what's wrong? What did Ah miss while Ah was away?"

Rebecca knew Maya wanted life to return to normal, but Rebecca was accepting that there was a new normal to work toward now. She still was not sure if the X-Men would be the best place to apply her new talents. She could not proactively go out to fight crime; leaving the X-Men meant she was not considered part of the deputized status the team enjoyed. Still, there would always be troubles in life and Rebecca wanted to be prepared.
They could worry about the future of her vigilante status later. Carefully positioning her antlers, Rebecca kissed her spouse back. "You're the best part ay bein' home, babe. Well, you and our two wee ones," she added cheerfully, watching Iris poke at her reflection.
Iris went down for a nap with minimal fussing, giving Becca the time to decompress and enjoy her wife's presence. Given how long it had been, Rebecca was feeling particularly affectionate. Once they had the door closed, Becca wrapped her arms around Maya's waist from behind and kissed her neck. It was easier to avoid crossing antlers from this angle. "Sae what have you been up to, besides missing me? Ah talk too much and want tae know what my wonderful, sexy, badass wife has been up to while Ah'm nae around."

Questions about coming back to the team were inevitable, especially from Maya, who was probably hoping Rebecca's time away would be something more temporary. It very well could be, she knew, but for the time being she did not want to be a Mystic voice on the team when there was a Mystic threat to mutants running around.
The shield was always going to give Maya a sense of optimism. Becca had to temper that, sadly. "Ah dinnae think Ah'm rejoining for the near future. Though maybe we should ask our daughter; never had a teenage clairvoyant running around." Becca was not envious of her daughter's talents; peering into the future sounded heavy. "Ah want tae learn tae defend myself and use thes new gift. Leaving the X-Men disnae suddenly stop making me a target for bad people." She told herself the plan was just self-defense, though she did think of a vigilante friend or two in the back of her mind...
Iris was curious about the shield so Becca positioned it to let the baby interact with her reflection. "Come on, Maya; would Ah be letting her touch it if it wasn't safe. The charm isnae tae protect me from wee babies." she eyed the cache, adding, "Though there are three swords in there. Magic or nae, those are nae baby friendly."

Once she was settled in, Becca would call Kalos right away. She missed her daughter, and now that she was figuring out how to get her feet under her as a Mystic, it was her job as a mother to support Kalos and pass along those lessons. The two novice Mystics walked similar paths, which meant Becca had the chance and the privilege to help ease Kalos' burdens.
As expected, Maya was holding up well. There was no challenge, in Becca's eyes, that Maya could not measure up against. "Please, at this point, being part of the X-Team has been most of our lives," she joked, before her smile faltered for a moment. It was so easy to refer to herself as part of the team now that she was back in the Mansion, it almost slipped her mind that she resigned. It was another part of her identity she laid down, and that still felt bittersweet, but her trip helped her accept the new path she was on now.
Thankfully, attention shifted back to Becca's suitcases so they did not have to linger on weird topics. "There are plenty of souveniers, babe, but not in that chest. I want to show you, though." Her demeanor shifted, eager to share the fruits of her studies. It was the same dorky enthusiasm Mirror carried themselves with any time they delved into a history topic they were passionate about.
Unlatching her cache, several objects were wrapped in cloth, but Becca grabbed the widest and lifted it out of the case. "So Cafas griped, coz I sorta blew up the first two getting the glyph wrong," she hastily explained, not wanting Maya to get caught up with the dangerous side-effects of her magical experimentation, "BUT I finally found an orientation that channels everything right."
Dropping the protective cloth, Becca brandished a new shield, now in the heater shield style instead of her original round shield style. The surface was still highly reflective and polished, giving it a mirrored surface, but a glyph was etched in a darker reflective shade, shaped almost like a shield itself. "Ah figured if Ah could take the runes from when Ah... er, snapped or whatever, Ah could imbue my shield. If Ah have a protection charm, it makes sense to use it on something Ah can protect people with, right?" Becca wanted to believe that was why the Protection Charm was her first spell; the mystical energies understood who she was and gave her magic that suited her.
"Also, Ah spent a long time training with a shield. Not having one now would feel like a waste."

"We'll make do, love." After giving the tightest embrace she could safely provide an infant, Becca carefully let her daughter back down to the ground to give her spouse a proper greeting. She tilted her head to avoid Maya's own antlers, wrapping her arms tightly around her lean waist.
Burrowing her face into Maya's shoulder and taking in a deep breath of her love's familiar scents, Becca relaxed. "Good. Now ye can stop missing me. Ah'm back where Ah belong." In Maya's arms, where she could be there for her family.
After letting the peaceful, quiet moment slowly pass, Becca pulled away and glanced to Kalos' door. "Ah'm guessing our oldest isn't home yet?" With her new appearance, Kalos was going through her own journey of identity, and it sounded like that was taking her out of the Mansion for the first time in years. "Ah really wish Ah could have brought her with me, but... well, unfamiliar lands and crowded airplanes were never gonna offer her the same kind of peace."
Taking Maya's hands in her own, she squeezed them. "How have ye been holding up without me? Ah know taking care of a roulette baby and a magical teenager is parenting hard mode."

Rebecca still felt guilty being away from her family for weeks, but she had a lot she needed to take care of and Mirror was understanding as ever. She did not want things to change between them, even if she was not exactly the woman he married anymore. Everyone changed over time, but being a mutant was such a big part of her, she needed time to figure out who she was without that part. She still video called Mirror each night, getting the chance to see Iris and Kalos (when she was around.) She needed time to return to her roots, but she would never abandon the beautiful family she had grown into.
Returning to Scotland, Becca had her heart-to-hearts with her mother, lamenting how things turned out with Aoife. The Scottish countryside was a good place to clear her head and research legends. Magic was fiction to her until Aoife pulled the veil from her eyes and etched magic into her DNA. Now, Rebecca read through stacks of books and myths with a renewed willingness to believe.
Doing her due diligence, one of the first things she looked up were the runes scorched into the ground when she cast her first spell. Skold, with ties to Danish and Proto-Germanic, and translating, naturally, to "Shield." Not all her research was tied to magic, and the runes gave her a suspicion to brush up on her family history. Unsurprisingly, like many families of the British Isles, Germanic and Norse invaders-turned-settlers played a role deep in her family tree. It was worth a trip to Denmark and Finland, learning and documenting Norse pagan practices to go alongside her Celtic notes. She had plenty of reading to do on her second-to-last flight to the American West Coast.
The trip had two purposes. For one, it was a good boost to her mental health to meet with old friends. Maya, the Ghost, was someone Becca looked up to, so it was comforting having her support. Cafas was also kind, but he showed his consideration through acts of service. Now that Rebecca was not going to be frisbee-ing her round shield in a fight, her needs were different. He only gave her the tiniest amount of sh*t when she asked for a few custom jobs. It did lead to some complicated questions at the airport, but if she was going to explore her new life as a combat mage, she wanted weapons made by someone she trusted exactly to her specifications.
Finally back in New York, Becca wasted no time rushing back to the Mansion. She had been away too long, and with her sense of purpose long since renewed, the only thing she wanted now was to be with her family. Gemma let her back into the Mansion and Becca moved eagerly to her apartment.
The first voice that greeted her when the door opened made Becca's heart swell. She dropped her two suitcases, the larger of which making a metalic clang when it hit the ground. Becca ran over to her daughter and scooped her up. Almost immediately, antlers started sprouting from Becca's temples and she realized how much she missed her baby's random gifts.
Kissing Iris carefully to avoid her smaller antlers, Becca smiled. "Aye Iris, Ma is back." Bouncing the child in her arms, she looked to a face she had been missing since it dropped her off at the airport. "Maya, you're tae considerate. Next time Ah ask for time tae travel and find myself, please remind me how Ah'll just miss ye every day."

Becca had no issues handling a mutation that would make her present male, but for the sake of her daily life, it would be easier if this was a rare option for Iris. Sure, many of her mutations made her look wildly different, but she usually looked like some version of herself. The day might be more challenging if Becca looked like another person entirely. Sure, she could find fun ways to take advantage of her anonymous "male" persona, but that meant fielding questions from students and staying away from her camera for the day. She would consider this guy!Becca a sometimes treat.
They would worry about that when it came time for the waking world. It was just past midnight, so the only person she was going to interact with was her wonderful spouse. Grinning, Becca kissed the top of Maya's head since it was so readily available. "Our lives are weird, loove. This is just a new flavor of it. Though Ah must say."
Becca wrapped an arm around the back of Maya's thighs, pulling her up with surprising ease. She smiled now that Maya was being held up in her arms with the brunette's legs dangling around either side of Becca's firm waist. "Ah might be havin' fun with this new weird." Lifted, Maya was back to eye-level with Becca, so the redhead took the opportunity to kiss her wife, hoping her stubble would not make the experience too uncomfortable for Maya.

It was comforting to know Gawain was going to fancy her regardless of her body. He had seen wonkier things than a male physique thanks to their surprise box child. "Ah'm glad Ah married a romantic," she teased, glad she was in loose pajama pants for the night.
Sharing in his wife's curiosity, Gawain cautiously brushed the cheek of their child. The effect was immediate and familiar. Rebecca smirked, watching Gawain become the smaller and slighter of the couple until Gawain was officially the Maya Becca knew all too well, wrapped in a skirt and not much else. Maya was disappointed, which was fair given her distaste toward the act of shifting. Becca's change did not hurt, but there was a sensation she now recognized after the fact.
"At least it seems tae be a rare one in Iris' arsenal," she sympathized, stepping closer to enjoy a height difference she was usually on the other side of. "Gods, ye really get an eyeful of my chest up here, don't ye?" Maya was not as well-endowed as Rebecca in her normal body, but she could still see the benefits of the tall man's perspective.
"There's somethin' cute about ye bein' sae short," Becca teased, taking Maya's chin in her larger hands, lifting it to meet her eyes. "Ah dunno, this could be fun as a treat on occasion. Ah alsae have a real temptation tae pick ye up. Is that jist somethin' tall folk want tae dae with small folk?"

Rebecca was aware of her husband watching her explore her new body, but that did not slow her down. Gawain always drank in her appearance, though the motivation was different this time. They talked about it previously, but for all the genderswapping they did, Mirror was not bisexual like their wife. "Ah hope it's nae tae disappointin' for ye. Ah know ye're nae big on the masculine form; should be back tae normal in an hour if Ah can keep mah hands off th' wee one."
When Becca brushed past the mislabeling of her gender, Gawain accepted it, but he seemed awkward about the topic. When Gawain was Gawain, he was male, when she was Maya, she was female. Their gender identity had always corresponded with their sex, so it was still hard for them to wrap their head around shifters who changed sex but not necessarily gender.
Becca was distracted from her lack of boobs by Gawain bringing attention to their daughter. "Interestin' question. Ah mean, 'sides frae one difference, Ah guess there's nae much changed when she's that young." Rebecca thought that was the obvious inference, but inspecting Gawain again, it hit her. "Dae ye think yer immune? Ye dae switch yer sex already. Huh, curious... Ah mean. There's always a way tae find out..." Rebecca was known for her curiosity, and a change in body did little to change her personality.

Gawain was getting too much pleasure out of watching Rebecca deal with the same transformation he experienced each night, scrambling to leave women's underthings before his body broadened and nearly strangled him. This was her first foray into that experience, and she finally empathized with why each night he rushed to get everything discarded. Next time she was taking her sweet time with Maya at eleven-fifty-five, she'd remember this.
Feeling her forearms, she was surprised by the extra muscle. She worked out plenty, but evidently a whole influx of testosterone probably did wonders for a body. She smirked at the romance novel comment. "Hitched tae th' Highlander, maybe?" What male-loving woman would not enjoy the fantasy of a ripped Scot to whisk her away.
Though that really was not Rebecca. "Ah mean, Ah'm nae a guy," she clarified, confident that she did not feel like a man just because her body was like this. "But Ah dae feel masculine. An' tall. Th' room looks different from this angle!" She looked around, then back at her body and jumped. "Ha. Nothin' tae bounce. That's weird; nae sure if Ah'm relieved or Ah miss them."

Becca felt the chill of Sam's dissatisfaction. She knew her recommendation would meet resistance. There would be anger at the cult for taking away her powers or any mutant's powers, because mutants were a community. They were a people ostracized by much of society for who they are, and the X-Men were protective over their flock. Becca did not lose that over-protective desire to keep mutantkind safe; after what happened to Kalos, that desire was stronger than ever.
But she was not a mutant now. Becca already talked to Maya about her intentions, which was a hard enough conversation. Becca did her best to make Maya understand where she was coming from, and while the mirrorwalker might still not truly understand, they were being supportive. Becca looked to the back corner where she was sure Maya was biting her tongue. She had been asked not to tell the rest of the team about Aoife's identity yet, which she was not pleased with by any stretch. Still, she respected Becca's wishes for now, keeping the identity of her enemy and sister silent.
A feeling of guilt formed in Becca's stomach when Sam all but told her she should not and could not leave. She knew that was coming and was ready to respond, but she was lucky to have Jorge around. Since she was a teenager new to America, he was around to look out for her. She needed that to stay strong and stand by her convictions. "Ah know that invitation will always be there, and Ah'm thankful. Th' X-Men changed mah life. And Ah dinnae plan on runnin' away; mah family still lives at th' Mansion, and Ah'd like tae stay on in whatever roles ye'd hae me." Maybe she would take time away from teaching, like a sabbatical, to focus on herself. Serena could handle English classes on her own and Becca had a lot to understand about herself.
"Th' team is about co-existin'," she finally agreed, acknowledging Sam's point, "but it's alsae a representation ay what mutants are and what ye can dae for th' world. Th' team often represents th' mutants ay th' world, and that's nae mah place right noo tae muddy up that voice. Ah'm sure th' cult'd be glad tae misuse me bein' on th' team for their own message, and Ah willnae hae it. Ah'll always be a friend tae th' X-Men, but right now, it's mah time tae step back tae keep mutant voices raised up." Try as she might, that was not her identity anymore, and she did not want some cult pointing to her as an example of how the "cure" for mutation was something to be admired.
Rebecca shrugged, worried she made everything too heavy or philosophical. There were practical aspects to what they needed to do. "Ah alsae want time tae learn about what Ah can dae and what it means tae be a Mystic. Th' cult is still out there gainin' strength, sae Ah cannae be a useless novice if trouble comes." She smiled, adding, "Ah dinnae if it's an imposition, all things considered, but Ah'd gladly whip up some protection wards for th' Mansion in exchange for some Danger Room time?" There was research and practice in her future, but there would be training, too. Even if she was not an X, she would be crazy not to at least ask if she could use the world's best training room.
