The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Iris whined for attention in the crib, but Becca would need to address that when this sudden stomach flip-flopping passed. Something was happening, it was just taking its time.
Her body shifted, arms, waist, and legs all gaining bulk until her clothes tightened. Her breasts sank into her chest as the chest itself broadened. "A body change? Wait, mah voice," she noticed, realizing it was deeper in a lower timbre. It was like the voice of a man.
Oh, damn! That was why this was familiar. This was the transformation she watched her spouse go through every night. The hair on her head receding as her body and cheeks were coated in fine red hair. When the change passed, her body was masculine, just over six feet tall, and built of strong muscle. Still adjusting to the shock of her new body, she examined her hands and arms, taking stock. Her shirt was suffocatingly tight, so with some effort, she pulled her top and bra over her head, revealing her upper body. "Sae... dinnae quote me on thes, but Ah think Ah figured out what mutation we're dealin' with today. Yours." Well, maybe sans the mirror hopping.
"Gods, thes feels sae different." She shook her head, but as expected, it felt lighter without two feet of strawberry blonde locks swishing around. "Hoo dae Ah look?" she asked, still fascinated by this new change.

Magic was hard.
Okay, that was not entirely true. Some magic came surprisingly easy. Small spells came to Becca like afterthoughts. They were not perfect; she had some kind of minor locator charm for things she lost in the apartment, but she did not always find the thing she was looking for. At least she now had an idea of how many hair ties her cat had stolen away and hidden.
Maya was doing her best to be supportive while her wife was diving into pagan and witch spaces online, trying to learn practices to use her magic safely. When Iris crawled off, Maya was quick to chase her down, knowing the consequences. When they returned to the room with matching satyr legs, Becca did her part to stifle laughter. She spent her own portion of the day earlier clopping around the living room, so there was no judgment from her.
Becca joined her spouse as the baby was set down into her crib, standing at her side grinning. "We need higher bars for th' crib. Our wee babe inherited our adventurous spirits." Heavens help them in the years to come.
There was no harm in hoping for a good roll from the Great Wheel of Iris Mutations. They loved their daughter no matter what, but some mutations made their lives calmer for a day. "Ah dae loove th' lavender days. Though I'm also biased toward th' Heart Eyes days." Those had been good to her.
It was easy to figure out the time with Mirror and Iris around. Becca watched Maya's figure broaden and hair receed until Maya became Gawain. Peeking into the crib, the goat legs were gone, but in the lowlight, at a glance, nothing was obviously different from base Iris. "Nae new scents. Nothin' glowin' far as Ah can tell. Did her hair gie shorter, though?" That seemed innocuous for a mutation. Curious, Becca extended a hand to her sleepy daughter's head to brush the strawberry blonde hair.
At the contact, a shudder ran through Rebecca's body. "Nothin' obvious," she mused with an odd frog in her throat. Confused, she did not immediately notice her perspective-changing as her height increased.

Rebecca wanted some time to process the big changes in her life, but she had to do the right thing first. After her experience at the warehouse, she had hands-on experience with the kind of threat the X-Men needed to be ready to face. She called for all available X-Men and X-Leaders to come to the War Room for a briefing. It was impossible to gather anyone at a given time, but if she filled some of them in, they could spread the word to the others.
When the team was gathered, she gave a run-down of the events her and Kalos experienced at the Well in the warehouse. She was not going to share some of the more personal details like Aoife's betrayal or Kalos' choice to give up her X-Gene. They needed to know about the cult and the powers and plots they had in store, not family drama.
"Sae the long and short ay it is: we're dealin' with a cult usin' anti-mutant sentiment and the gift ay magic tae lure people in." People like Aoife. People, almost, like Kalos.
She did not know how deep the organization ran, but she was able to conclude who two leaders were now. "One ay their leaders has control o'er bodies. Scary control." She still remembered being unable to move, betrayed by her own muscles. "They're able tae turn mutants intae humans. They're able tae turn humans intae Mystics. The other leader is an illusion weaver. Very deceptive and hard tae see through." She hesitated; she should tell the team more, but she did not want to give her sister's name yet.
"We dinnae know how many are recruited intae this, but Ah think it's safe tae assume they're numbers are growin' if they're actin' sae boldly noo." Trying to steal away and X-Man and her daughter was a risky decision. They would not have done that if they only had the dozen or so acolytes Becca saw.
"This is the kind ay threat the X-Men are hear for. I'm nae sure if the whole group hates mutants, but they dae cater tae the fear ay mutants. They preach 'at mutants are cursed," she lamented soberly. "If ye want tae keep mutantkind safe, there's nae time tae wait. Ah want tae help hoo Ah can, but... Ah'm nae sure Ah can dae that as an X-Man anymore."

Magic was unpredictable. They knew so little about what it did or what it might allow Becca and Kalos to do. There was no telling how dangerous these new powers could be, so Becca felt responsible for making sure her daughter learned about her new gifts in a safe way. She quietly wished Aoife had not burned the bridge between them, because she could have used her big sister's guidance now.
Without Aoife, Rebecca would just have to work harder to learn about her powers enough to help guide Kalos. "Ah'll be there for her," she promised. "Ah've got a lot tae figure out. I have tae let the team know eventually." She was still deciding what that meant for her as an X-Man. She would always be pro-mutant, but was it still appropriate for her to speak for mutant voices? She knew Gawain's answer, but she would have to think about that for herself. "Might borrow the jet tae clear mah head. Visit Ghost and Cafas." She still had those runes burned in her mind, and she had some thoughts Cafas might be able to help her with.
"Ah think Ah'm ready tae head home. Nae reason tae delay this new adventure noo, right?"

Rebecca exhaled the breath she was holding in, glad to know her husband was still there to support her, whether she was a mutant or not. She might not have been defined by her mutation, but it was a major part of her life and it was gone. It would take time to adjust to what that meant for her and the people around her oh, but she has the most important person by her side for it. "Right,Ah should hae remembered Ah married a huge nerd," she teased. Becca could not ask for anything more.
"Ah think Ah will be okay eventually. This is a lot. Ah feel like that inexperienced young transfer student comin' tae America and gettin' grips on her powers for the first time." She had come so far and grew from a student to a teacher, but now there were more lessons to learn on the horizon.
And heavens only knew how she was meant to learn. There was one person who could teach her, but Becca was not crossing back on that bridge now. "Ah just wish mah sister didn't force this on me. Ah wonder if Kalos has figured thes out yet. Ah didnae gie to see what happened before the well. Aw Ah know is she stepped in. Even still, thes must be a lot tae take in, and if Aoife isnae gang tae be there to help her understand, Ah'll have tae help her figure it out while Ah'm doin' the same."

After growing up in a world with mutants, it was crazy to think that we're still new things to discover about the world that they were so convinced just were not possible. If Gawain was incredulous, Becca would not blame him, because even the reports of a magical cult sounded far-fetched until she met them face-to-face.
"I can do a spell. And maybe light a candle. I don't know, it's weird." She didn't have an encyclopedic knowledge of charms and hexes. "I feel it. Like there's something lingering in the air. Something I feel connected to. And I guess... that is magic."
Rebecca waved her finger and the delicate flame snuffed itself out. It was small, but it felt so instinctive. She doubted all magic would be like that, but that just meant she had a lot to learn if this really was part of her now. "Are you upset? Scared? Disappointed?" That last one was tinted with nerves. "Your wife isn't a mutant. She's a mage or witch or something. Mystic," she corrected, remembering what her sister called them. "Tell me what you're thinking, babe."

"RIGHT? That's whit Ah thought!" Really, it was the only word to feasibly fit the realization that you accidentally spawned a magical defense bubble. Becca could sympathize with the sheer stunned surprise.
"They hae some kind ay ritual. There was a fountain, or a well, or somethin'." They called it a well, and it was hard to argue when they were apparently Master mystics and she'd been a witch for two hours. "It wasnae filled wi' water, it was jist... Energy? Magic."
The experience sounded exciting, but Becca remembered it being properly terrifying when her agency was stolen. "The old man, he had a way tae keep mah arms and legs from movin', sae they pushed me in. It was... surreal. And then it happened." She held the detail that she drank from the well. She did it off her own power, but they had pushed her to the point where it was her only option.
"Ah think they were going tae take us, but Ah panicked and mah magic kind ay... triggered." That was the easiest way to phrase it, knowing nothing else about how this all worked. "There was this snap, then a flash. And when Ah opened mah eyes, runes were burned into the ground and there was a bubble aroond Kalos and Ah."

How did she bring this up? What she went through was traumatic in its own right. She was robbed of her mutant identity, which was undeniably a major part of what the lovers bonded over initially. She did not want to act as though a new identity thrust upon her changed who she was, and she knew Gawain would not care. But there was that irrational fear that this would change things anyway.
"Ah said Aoife wanted, at first, tae leave my powerless. Noo 'at she convinced herself she was daeing thes for us, she tried... weel, convincin' us tae join her."
Becca was not going to write out the runes she still had clearly in her head, but there was something small. She knew it in the way you knew how to crack your knuckles or wink.
She held up two fingers like a V set at an angle, then put her middle finger down and raised her index finger straight up simultaneously. She took in a breath, then offered her air, passing out through her lips. As it brushed her fingertip, a small flame, like a candle, sparked to life, flickering delicately atop her finger. "Ah still dinnae gie it aw, an' it disnae make whit she did better, bit... it's magic. She gae me magic. Weel, Kalos an' I."

Becca recognized she was not going to convince Gawain to give Aoife the benefit of the doubt, because honestly? Even she was struggling to believe her sister deserved it. What she was willing to do, and what she was planning to do before Kalos wormed her way into the witch's heart were both unacceptable. Still... this was her sister. Her sister who was abandoned and taken in by zealots.
They were better off not talking about Aoife. That wound was too raw for everyone. Pushing that aside, Becca had to consider how she was feeling. What was that, besides numb?
She gave it some quiet thought. "... Confused. Loch Ah'm a stranger tae myself. Mah heart hurts," she admitted. "I feel guilty five different ways an' angry at least seven."
And then there was the tingling. Did Kalos say anything yet? Did she really know what was going on? ""There's... somethin' else. Somethin' that happened after the elder removed mah X-gene."

Her husband had a point; many people believed, either maliciously or with misplaced sympathy, that a mutant cure would be a gift to those who struggled to live as mutants in a society that wasn't always ready to accept them. People saw the mutants as the problem, giving a free pass to society. Her sister was one of these people, and she had the power to make it happen.
"Ye dinnae know she's beyond savin', Gawain. Cults exploit people an' fill their heads with terrible things. Ye know ye can dae terrible things if 'at's all yer taught." She was not going to deal any low blows, but Gawain knew what it was like to have family in a shady organization warping their morals.
Cults found their power by exploiting people with trauma with no place to go, and that was how Aoife ended up where she did. ""She'd planned tae jist gie revenge oan me, bit Ah hink her time wi' us was changin' her. She coulds hae left me powerless an' broken bit she didn' dae it. She..."
Right. With everything else they went through, Becca forgot the other big change. The way the hairs on the back of her neck were still standing on end. "She thought she made me better coz they fucked up mah sister's head. It's... it's sad," she admitted, knowing Gawain wouldn't see it that way.

The bite in Gawain's voice when he said Aoife's name was totally justified and it still hurt to hear. For all she did, this was still Rebecca's sister. Knowing she did this and knowing how unforgivable this would be in her husband's eyes, the dreams Becca had of sharing her lost family with her found family were dead and she knew it. "Ah hink we might hae underestimated hoo much Kalos still felt insecure an' it ay place, e'en wi' us." They loved Kalos, but their daughter's lived experiences were different than their own. Becca and Gawain did not understand being a physical mutant in a world where that was an oddity. Maybe Aoife put this in Kalos' head, but it was also possible she saw and exploited an insecurity Kalos already had.
"Ah'll survive thes," she promised Gawain. She had recovered from the Ragman, but he broke her mind. Her heart might need more time to fix itself. "Ah jist wish it made sense."
She could still hear Aoife's words and see the expression she wore when she let down her mask. "She said she didnae want tae hurt me anymair. Aoife kept sayin' thes was a gift. If Ah hudnae ignored th' signs, maybe Ah couldsa shown her thes was wrong. Saved her frae whit she was taught." She wanted to believe they were working through Aoife's trauma, but they never really talked about it. If she knew how to be a sister, could she have shown Aoife the truth?

No one was as proud of being a mutant or more fiercely protective of mutant rights than Gawain. Rebecca was sure he had much he wanted to say about what was done to his wife and daughter, but bless him, he said nothing about Aoife. His eyes were not as silent, but he did her the favor of keeping those thoughts within.
Rebecca leaned into her husband's arms, breathing deeply, trying to keep her composure. Becca wanted to wrap Kalos in a big hug and never let her go, but for now, she was just glad the young woman was resting. She had a long day of modeling, being charmed by a cultist, losing her mutation, and leaving an aunt she had grown to love and respect. All in all, she had to be exhausted.
"It's a lot," she admitted. "Ah jist keep thinkin' abit hoo everything played it. Hoo Ah didnae see th' signs in time. Thes is oan me. It's mah fault uir daighter isnae a mutant."

Trapped in her own head, second-guessing everything, the rest of the hospital room was a dull blur for Rebecca. Gawain's voice pierced through the veil, but even that took seconds to hit her and register. She looked up to Gawain's eyes. She was lost; almost vacant.
"They confirmed it," she mumbled. "Ah knew they would. Ah could feel it. Nae X-Gene; nae e'en a remnant." After a life feeling the magnetic fields around her, Becca was blind to them. A whole sense she had lived with for a decade was gone. There was nothing to push and pull. The charges that lived in her hands had a hum to them she never noticed. She noticed their absence now, like a hollow silence. Gawain might have hoped it was temporary, but Becca knew her sister said what she meant.
Her sister did this to her. To her daughter. "Ah jist dinnae gie it. She said she forgave me for growin' up with our ma, but then she..." Her voice cracked and trailed off.
Becca pushed past her own confusion and self-loathing. "Hoo is Kalos holdin' up? Did she finally gie tae sleep?" She was lost, but Kalos was the one thing clear in her mind, even as the images of coral pink and olive brown clashed.

Rebecca was laid-up in her hospital bed, more rattled mentally and emotionally than anything else. She was still replaying everything back in her head. Not just the events of the warehouse, but every time she brought Aoife into her life and her family.
God, she had done just that. She let down her guard and now her daughter was back at their apartment in the Mansion, looking like a different person because Aoife lied to both of them.
Staring at the hands on her lap, she focused on what came next. The doctor came in to give Becca her lab results. It was exactly what she expected, which she knew was a foregone conclusion. She wished she could try holding onto hope, but the heroine wasn't feeling very hopeful tonight. Aoife set everything up with a purpose; everything she did to that point was a lie behind illusions, but what reason did she have to lie now that she won?
Her spouse was staying with Kalos until the girl fell asleep. Becca sat silently, knowing Gawain would pop over through the mirrors to be at her bedside for an explanation soon.

Becca’s pocket mirror was like an emergency escape button. She would have to lose the mirror for a quick escape, but a small mirror was the price she would gladly pay to get out with Kalos and Gawain. There was no need to explain the situation when Gawain arrived. He could understand the direness of cultists swarming around them, even if he was missing so much context.
Becca met her sister’s eyes one last time, sure the next time they crossed paths, it would be on opposite ends of a conflict Becca finally knew she was begrudgingly taking part in.
The trip was disorienting as ever, but Becca was greeted with the cool breeze of a rooftop. Her jeans were… she wouldn’t call it wet, but saturated with the magical energy she inadvertently bathed in. Not liquid, but thicker than air.
Gathering her senses, Rebecca realized Gawain was asking for a status update and Kalos was… well, she was crestfallen. If anyone had gotten closer to Aoife than Becca, it was Kalos. Part of Becca expected Kalos was going to stay, and maybe she would have if Aoife had not betrayed Becca. Her sweet girl; through it all, she was too moral to believe in forcing choices on others.
Even if she made that choice herself.
”Nae, it’s jist Kalos an’ Ah. Nae gang back noo,” she informed Gawain, returning her attention to the dainty hand she held tightly in her grip. Becca bent low to kiss Kalos’ forehead, soft and new.
Becca was going to go to the hospital to determine exactly how truthful Aoife was being. She wanted Kalos to come, but there was no sense in getting the same news twice, and she wanted to stop putting Kalos through anything today. ”Aye. We’ll bring ye haem, sweet girl. Gawain, let’s gie back tae th’ Mansion.”
She met Gawain’s eyes with a look promising answers later. There was a lot to unpack, and she was sure he would be connecting the dots by now with the dark-skinned young woman his wife was clinging to. Answers were the one thing everyone in the Grey-Morris family would be looking for in the coming days, months, and possibly years. Nothing felt as certain as it was before magic changed everything.
