The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Rebecca was already gathering her coat to head downtown. She loved Maya, but it had been an emotionally turbulent few days; if she went instead of Rebecca, the words exchanged with Sveta might get ugly. Rebecca was frustrated, but she could find it in her to be the intermediary here.
She kissed Maya's cheek and Iris' forehead. "Ah'll be back soon with answers."
Her visit to Haven's Headquarters lasted two hours. After getting first-hand accounts and pouring over the security footage, Rebecca had her answer. The news only made her angry, but she tried her best to focus her anger on the man responsible and not Svetlana or Haven.
She doubted Maya was in the mood to limit collateral damage.
Returning to the shelter they were temporarily calling home, Rebecca put her coat on a hanger and took a deep breath, finding Maya. "Sae... we were right." Deep down, Rebecca was hoping this was a natural phenomenon and Iris' powers were just hibernating on their own, but that was just a pipedream. Someone was, indeed, responsible for this.

A suppressed X-Gene. It wasn't outlandish to imagine; most people had an "inactive X-Gene" before they manifested their power. Iris was a unique case, like her other parent, where her X-Gene was active at birth. Still, Rebecca had never heard of an X-Gene being active, then just... turning off.
"Is it possible for an X-Gene tae gae innactive on it's own?"
"Well, anything is possible, but I would say it's more likely this was done by some outside force. Has she been exposed to anything or anyone with an unknown power or influence?"
Rebecca's heart sank. They left Iris with Haven, so there was a whole day where something could have happened to Iris and neither Becca nor Maya would be there to stop it. "We need to contact Sveta." Rebecca had to focus on solutions, because feeling scared or miserable was not going to help Iris, as much as she wanted to just feel her feelings for the first time in three days. "Thank you, Doc... this helps."

It was nice having a partner who didn't underestimate her; it helped Rebecca keep confidence that she was still capable of taking care of herself. Her powers were new to her in the grand scheme of things, so the support of someone she could trust to have her back helped her get back on the horse.
Gawain called for the simulation to start up. Rebecca grinned, poking fun a the name. "Aw, nae catchy name? Mansions & Mystics, maybe?" She would have to workshop that.
Despite the plain name, the setting Gawain put them in fit the energy of what she was implying to the letter. A fantasy setting, a ruined castle, and a swarm of approaching elementals. "Aww, ye shouldnae have. Maybe when we're done here, ye should look intae Dungeon Master stuff. The nae sexy kind," she clarified, holding up her shield and preparing her sword.
The army was closing in, but a rock elemental was the first to act, catapulting a small boulder in her direction from its camouflaged place. Rebecca's instincts were still sharp enough to raise her shield and intercept the boulder. It smashed against the mirrored surface, bursting into pebbles and dust. It was something her shield could do before, so it was not much of a test, but she did notice less recoil. Her shield absorbed more impact, letting Rebecca hold her stance firm. "If Ah'm protecting ye, does that make ye mah damsel?"

There was going to be a logical explanation for what Iris was going through and they just had to wait for DocProf to clear up the confusion. Babies born with their mutations active were unlike most other manifestations; it was entirely possible her mutation could go dormant for periods of her childhood. "Exactly; there's a host of reasons. Ah'm nae worried," she lied.
It did not take long for DocProf to return to the anxious parents with Iris. Rebecca took the child as soon as she was in arms reach. "What's the news, Doc?"
"It's... unusual. I've run tests and diagnostics, and I'm coming to the conclusion that her mutation is no longer active."
Rebecca's heart sank, remembering her and Kalos' own experiences with losing their powers. "Like... it's gone?"
"What? Oh, no, heavens. Sorry, I should be more clear," he confessed, trying to calm down the panic in the Scot's eyes. "Iris is still a mutant. Her X-Gene is still present. It is just... inactive."
"Inactive? Does that really happen?"
"The X-Gene is a tricky thing. It's possible, but my preliminary belief is that something supressed her X-Gene."

"Okay, this time for sure." Rebecca scrawled notes into her leather-bound tome and closed her laptop. She was in an active chat with Mystics workshopping solutions in other regions, and she was confident they hammered out the details for today's ritual. This time, she was certain they would not accidentally open a portal into the Brooklyn Zoo.
Rushing down the steps of the library with her dusty rose cloak whipping behind her, Rebecca joined other gathered Mystics at the entrance of the building. Well, Mystics and one librarian. The library was still a public place and Booker B. Bookman was generous with his assistance in the process. "Thank ye for yer patience." She accepted a library key from him and placed it at the feet of the lion statue protecting the library.
After reagents and spell cards with an encantation were handed out, the gathered Mystics formed a semi-circle before the guardian.
Guardian of knowledge, Knowledge that transcends The boundaries of our world. We call for a new safe haven, A Sanctum of knowledge seekers A library between worlds, The Mortal and the Mystic. Watch over us, Guard the Gate, But welcome the students of the Veil.
There was more, of course, but the ritual was performed in front of a handful of libraries around the world. It culminated in each ritual leader, in this case, Rebecca, placing a hand on the Sanctum's "guardian" and infusing magical energy into the statue and the building it guards.
There was a ripple of something, but it was hard to tell at first glance if the spell worked. Rebecca cautiously ascended the steps back to the main doorway of the library, pushing it open.
And she breathed a heavy sigh of relief, looking in wonder at their new Sanctum. "Fantastic."
The space was similar to the mortal library it existed parallel to, but there were no tourists or readers perusing the stacks. Shelves were bare, but they could fix that. The most notable aspect of the library was a lack of structure. Not organization, but actual structure. Above them, there was no ceiling. Rather, there was a nebulous aether shifting between colors. "It's nae much yet, but it's a start." She gestured for the others to join her inside their new extra-dimensional space.

Rebecca was used to crazy missions as an Ex-X-Man, but magic only increased the randomness.
For instance, a whale falling from the sky. Pretty godsdamned random. “Praxi!” Becca called out to the slime girl, who looked up just too late before an Orca landed on top of her, splatting her.
Rebecca shielded her eyes as a wave of powdered snow kicked up from the impact, then ran oven, filled with concern. Much to her surprise, the whale was already devolving into green slime itself. From the remains, a woman-like figure raised. “Praxi?”
“Well, that was terrible.” Praxi’s body had indeed been splatted, but the consistency of the whale’s own jelly body made it easy for Praxi to reconstitute herself! It was a shame she couldn’t keep absorbing; a mega slime would have been helpful in the fight.
Relieved, Rebecca looked forward just in time to see a Mystic flying through the air, crashing down a few yards from her. She charged with her shield, hearing the man curse. Not like a magical curse; he was complaining about a twisted ankle. Some of these foot soldiers were not practiced with their magic.
Rebecca was. Channeling energy into her sword, Rebecca swung the blade twice, each time releasing a small burst of force, one in blue and one in green. Each concussive bolt hit the man like a punch to the gut and face. Before he could get his bearings, Rebecca was on him, hitting his skull with a clang and putting him down.
Looking back up, Rebecca noticed a whirlpool forming near the pool. She grinned. That was not a Mystic; it was a force of nature. “Nice seeing you back out in the field, Neptune.” Sure, he was technically there in the capacity of an MRC Detective, but she couldn’t ignore the nostalgia of it all.

Rebecca placed her hand on Gawain's back, offering some comfort that things could start getting back to normal soon. "Ah'm sure in time, she'll adjust. We're together, and that's what matters." With Iris in tow and Kalos waiting for them, they could retreat to one of Haven's larger rooms for the night.
Unfortunately, things did not go back to normal right away. The next day was spent getting as much merciful sleep as they needed after expending all their energy the day before. Rebecca in particular needed time to recharge and manifest mystic energy after draining herself so heavily to complete the ritual and fight The Master.
It was the next day when something was undeniably amiss. Midnight came and went and Gawain turned to Maya, but Iris was just the same as the day before. Try as they might, there were no signs of their daughter's mutation manifesting. When the morning came, they reached out to DocProf so he could diagnose what might be going on with their daughter.
While they waited, Rebecca tried not to present her nervousness, but her arms were folded to keep her hands still. "Ye know, after all th' dangerous mutations, Ah never thought a secret, invisible one would be the most troubling alternative." Rebecca was also worried, just the tiniest bit in the back of her head, if this was the Ritual's fault.

Rebecca wrapped her arm around Gawain, offering her free hand to Iris so she could grab her finger and squeeze. It was a small moment, but this was the peace they needed after their crazy night.
Letting herself relax for the first time in hours, Rebecca rested her head on Gawain's shoulder. "Probably nae. But when we gie tae bed, maybe she'll calm down if we let her sleep in our bed." Or at least the bed they would be sleeping in for the next nights.

Rebecca did not smell lavender, and there were no obvious signs of one of Iris' less visible mutations. It was possible their list of 39 powers was not complete, but for now, they would just have to wait for this one to reveal itself.
Exhaling a deep breath, Rebecca offered Iris to Gawain. She was sure he needed the feeling of home that came with holding his daughter. "Thank the heavens Haven kept the girls safe. As long as we have Iris and Kalos and each other, it's gonna be okay," she assured him, and to some degree, assured herself.

It was kind of Haven to take in the kids of the Mansion, alongside some of the babies of people who joined in the battle. Walking through the nursery, you could almost thing this was just a normal daycare and the rest of the terrible events never happened.
Rebecca smiled, reaching down to pick Iris up. She was prepared for some sensation to run through her as a power got passed over to her, but there was nothing. "Okay, dear, what secrets are ye hiding today...?" She cautiously looked over her daughter, but nothing seemed out of place?

Rebecca felt awful, because she was well aware of everything they lost in the night's grand battle. They lost their home, and that was always going to be a crushing blow, but she knew it would hit Gawain the hardest. They had been living in the Mansion since they were a teenager. That was their home. Rebecca had come and gone, but Mirror was as much a fixture of the Mansion as the Danger Room or the name on the gate.
The cost was great, but Rebecca was still conflicted because the ritual they performed saved the day. It saved magic. For all the damage and carnage, a guilty part of her still felt a thrill of being part of something big built on the back of a fallen demon. But it hardly felt appropriate to celebrate, especially when her partner was reeling.
They were going to need time to figure their lives out after this. But before that could happen, they needed to pick up their daughters. Rebecca gestured toward the Haven nursery and smiled weakly. "After ye. Ah hope Iris' power today is somethin' small. Ah'd love lavender scent," she admitted.

Rebecca was prone to getting deep into her studies. She would not call herself obsessive, but rather... an excitable student. It carried her through her Masters in Literature, and now it was turning her into a bit of a magic geek. There was such a long history of practices and cultures and the theory behind magical casting was so varied and—
And this was exactly why it was so easy to get enthusiastic when talking about magic. But Rebecca had a training session to take part in.
Gawain, for his part, was doing his best to keep up with the rambling info-dumping of his wife. Becca giggled, giving a quick refresher by banging on the glyph drawn into the reflective surface of her shield in an equally reflective green. "Aye. When mah protection charm is applied tae a protective item—clothes, armor, and obviously, shields— it multiplies its protective qualities. A hoodie might nae tear tae a pocket knife right away, and mah armor might absorb more impact and nae crack when something hits it hard."
Rebecca looked forward at the simulation as it started to build their surroundings. "All that tae say, Ah'm nae as vulnerable as Ah look." Not that she looked very vulnerable at all with a shield, a sword, and half-plate.

Rebecca felt her heart pounding harder than she could remember prior to any mission in her X-Career. Without knowing what was to come next, she was stuck doing whatever might count as support.
With the help of some very friendly Mystics from a local strip club(?) she was setting up a Protection Charm on the Mansion itself. It would not make the building invulnerable, but with any luck, it may be more resilient and minimize the chance of the whole Mansion caving in.

The most entertaining aspect of Rebecca's new fashion sense was the response from her partner. Gawain was, to put it lightly, a nerd. Specifically, the kind of nerd with a love for Renaissance Fairs, reenactments, and knights. As Rebecca dipped into an almost witch knight style, she was sure he approved of the redesign.
Their Danger Room session for the day was nothing Rebecca hadn't seen before when she was still on the team, which was probably a good way to adjust to a new power set.
It came down to what she wanted to test. "That's a good question. What am Ah lookin' tae test... well, Ah guess the protection charms on mah gear, though hopefully it's not just a session of me getting my arse kicked. Ah've been working on a low level spell that shoots a small blast ay force from mah sword, so getting some practice in with that would be good," she admitted.
With programmable enemies to deal with, maybe she could get more experimental. "Ah'm nae sure if it'll work on a simulation, but Ah hae been working on a hex. Sort ay the opposite of my Calm Mind Charm; a Mind Fog Hex. The name's a work in progress."

Rebecca kept an eye on Carrick, knowing her Calm Mind Charm was still a spell she was mastering. He was holding up well, with his typical amount of levity. It was weird watching students like Carrick and Praxi out in the field, but they were twenty, (assuming the de-aging of Carrick was calculated correctly,) and more or less as mature as Rebecca was throwing herself into the X-life with full force. Gods help them.
”Ah believe th’ parchment and book-bindings of Atlantis are treated tae withstand water,” Rebecca pointed out to Lenna, having spent time perusing the less-restricted books of Atlantis. The island was underwater for a long time, after all.
The cave The Queen led the X-Men into caught Liz’s attention right away, which was great, because it gave Rebecca a pit in her stomach. Queen Achlus was ready for questions, even from a newcomer to the island. She watched curiously as bioluminescent plankton danced around her feet. ”You’re line of questioning is why my historians called you here,” she admitted.
One of the mutants reading slates rose to attention at his queen’s command, taking one of the slates from his colleague. Breathing deeply, his eyes flickered with a blue glow when he opened them. An image filled the room like a hologram, illustrating the history as the Queen explained it.
”Mystics were still living on the island when Atlantis was officially founded as a nation. Their numbers were not great, but they served roles in the community. Diviners, enchanters; even a royal advisor. This chamber was where the royal advisor claimed to commune with guiding spirits of the island and the king trusted him. All accounts suggest he portrayed himself as a man wholly devoted to the wellbeing of Atlantis. It was on the second New Moon of Winter when his true machinations were revealed.”
The projections changed from the Mystics of Ancient Atlantis when a new slate was handled. The new projection overlaid itself upon the stone ring, but where obsidian covered the center in the modern day, swirling energy filled the projected portal. ”You have heard of the Mystics’ wells; the word came from old Atlantean, but they are not wells of water. They are spots where the veil between the Material World and the Mystical Realm is weak enough for mystical energy to gather. Most places in the world have so little access to the energies of that realm, magic is inaccessible. Historically, it was always where wells formed that strange occurrences would increase and Mystics would snap.”
The Queen gestured to the portal. ”This… was not a well. Beneath our own castle was something far worse. With wells throughout our island bringing more mystical energy into the world, the Royal Advisor found he could create an opening where the highest mystical pressure coalesced. With a ritual, he created a Doorway to the Mystic Realm.” From the hologram portal, creatures started to emerge. Winged beasts, feral humanoids, even creatures resembling drakes and demons. ”And in doing so, he brought all manner of beings into our world that almost destroyed Atlantis.”
Rebecca went pale. Paler. ”There are… creatures on th’ other side?” She was always under the impression that mystical power came from a reality of pure energy; she never considered life existed there.
”Yes, and your ancestors made the dangerous choice of creating a portal for them.” The Advisor figure, once more humanoid, appeared taller, with broad, demonic traits as a battle ensued. ”Many Atlantean lives were lost and the torrent of magical energy made the island unstable. It was as a last resort that our royal ancestor did what had to be done: they sealed the doorway. Knowing the island was at risk of destruction either way, they drew power from the earth, shifting the plates under the island and taking our home under the waves. As the island sank, they turned the energy of the portal and converted it to obsidian, sealing the doorway between realms.”
The final projections displayed the island sinking below the waves and creatures being slain more easily as the magical energy was cut off. ”The people of Atlantis managed to survive, but our society’s population was halved. Hence why Mystics are not given safe harbor in Atlantis anymore.”
Rebecca shifted uncomfortably, taking a lot in from the fall of Atlantis. She knew the island sank, but they never understood the cause. A doorway between worlds could be dangerous and unpredictable, and if that was the Cult’s plan, they would have to act fast. ”But the second New Moon after the Solstice… that’s Lunar New Year. That’s tomorrow. The Cult may come to Atlantis to try opening the Doorway again!”
”First, they would not make it past our shores,” the Queen’s second-in-command grunted.
”And more importantly, after the sinking, Atlantis no longer has the mystical energy for someone to poke open a well, let alone a Doorway.”
”Of course. So if they were looking to use wells to create somewhere dense enough with magical energy to try again, it would be…” Only one answer made sense; the same reason other countries were not seeing a sudden boom of Mystic population. ”Fuck.”
