The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Lumen had been spending quite a lot of time in Paul's apartment. While she was happy to see their relationship progressing she was more than happy to be invited to Tasean's get together. It was a chance to go out and be a little independent from Paul, mingle with people, and potentially make some new contacts. She never ruled off any idea when it came to finding out more information.
She was dressed in a form fitting dress that came to her neck but had bare arms. It was a silvery material that caught the light just right. She felt it would be appropriate for the weather considering it went down to her ankles too. Sexy, but practical. And damnit if she didn't look both those things.
When she entered the room she knew Tasean was on the same wave length as she was. Not only was he a mutant with light capabilities but the man knew how to dress up a room. There were dozens of guests floating by, food and drinks, and Tasean himself greeting people as they came in. "Tasean!" she called out with a smile. "Thank you so much for inviting me, everything looks simply wonderful." she said not bothering to hide her accent. Tasean had one too, and he thought they were cool!
omg, jack jumps over a candle stick? That is kind. of. AWESOME. Thanks for showing this to me Katrina!!! <3 In that case, I may use it since it's all ready established once my character gets a little more established and further through the current plot
Naveed gave Luke a clap on the back and invited him to his car. Naveed had one of the few cars in his community and the red paint still made him gleam with pride. He could remember the day it came off the boat, the sun shining and Raina singing the ice out of the way.
In Nunavut there were few roads, cars idled often, and when you turned it off for the night it was common practice to wrap up the battery in a blanket so it wouldn't freeze. He still had his dog team, but the car was nice for runs to the co-op and other local stores.
They drove in silent, it was dark and the headlights helped a lot. Soon they arrived at his small home where Raina had been staying only hours earlier. Naveed grabbed the little bit of luggage Luke had without waiting for a protest and led the way. The house was a bit chilly and Naveed kept his boots on. He flicked the light switch and put the thermostat on. "In here." he grunted to Luke motioning to the TV room. "Have a seat, I'll get us something warm to drink."
A glow was already coming from the TV room. The local channel APTN was running a news broadcast that was being spoken both in English and Inuktitut. Naveed found himself in the kitchen fumbling over the coffee maker. The shock of seeing Luke had finally worn off and he wondered what his sister would think of him. He could have told the man his sister was on a flight out- hell, Luke might have even caught her. Now he was stuck here as Naveed's house guest (Raina would kill him if he turned the guy away). A pretty nervous house guest from the looks of him.
Naveed had no idea what his sister saw in the man. He was blind for God's sake. (something Naveed had actually forgotten until this very moment since the man blended in so easily) Naveed easily towered him, and probably doubled his weight. Naveed was strong. Luke was a coward, especially if he ran away. But... he was here. There had to be a reason and it had to mean something.
He filled two cups of black coffee and put them on a bone tray from Sedna. Like she taught him he delicately placed the milk and sugar with his sausage fingers and carried the tray out to Luke. He sat it down on the tv dinner stand between the two of them, and took his own seat in an easy boy chair offering the couch to Luke. "Late flight to come in on." he commented wondering what else he should say. "So why did you?" he looked at the man curiously. "come in... I mean?"
*******
Raina's flight was going pleasantly enough. The windows were all shaded now for night time, she'd been given a blanket and a pillow, and she was curled up in a seat all on her own with a book. In her hands was the latest Game of Thrones books and she was lost in a world of Lannisters and Starks.
She fingered the necklace around her throat absent-mindedly, twisting it into a loop and unravelling it again. She hated Naveed for bringing up Luke. Sure, she pined for him and he entered her thoughts now and then. Especially on those cold nights alone in bed. But she'd been keeping the wraith at bay until now. She'd been keeping the sinking feeling in her stomach away too. Now Luke was creeping into her dreams and her thoughts the way he crept through shadows in New York.
Would she really ever see him again? She couldn't know. What lay ahead was so unsure. Her future, so foggy.
So, we have an excellent plot idea running right now... but I guess my wheels are always turning and Im always thinking ahead. Blame it on the books I've been reading and topics I am teaching in school... but after the fun of the Future Plot seeing what our characters would be like I am wondering if we might consider doing something with the past?
I was thinking about how mutant or no, it would be fun to see how our characters react to things in medieval times. It would create a lot of fun avenues to explore, there's a lot of great films, books, and TV players can draw inspiration from etc.
There'd be a few big issues to consider and plan going into something like this:
-How do we get to the past and why?
-Does this RP affect anything with our characters in the present day? e.g. future plot ended up being an elaborate dream that only changed people as much as dreams usually do.
-Is there some sort of ruling religion that would see mutants as evil? as gods? or would it be up to the individual players?
-How specific would we be? Would we pick an actual time in history and stay historically correct or have something loosely based around our common knowledge of that general period etc.
-The point. I think if there's some sort of common goal or war or something going on it would make it easier for people to RP. I still fear the stagnate wrath of the camps plot. Great idea, but not enough plot points!
-would we keep in historical or include mythical creature e.g. Dragons etc.
-would it be restrictive to one area e.g. UK etc or would it be all over (in which case we may consider ancient civilizations from all over the world)
Anyway, it's just an idea. Something to mull over. I think it could work as either a site wide plot if people are interested enough to invest some time in pre-planning, or it could simply be a side plot that some of us who are interested in plan out and do with mod approval. I'm not keen on having anything going at the moment with everything that's already going on... but brainstorming is always cool
And all of a sudden Lumen was reminded of a French candle-man while Jude explained how things would work. Between his accent and her mutation she was pretty sure they could bust out a very convincing version of Be Our Guest. She grinned mischievously at the inside joke.
"You'll be fine." said Lumen. It was a shame she couldn't see the same person Paul had seen. She wondered if this guy had been interviewed by the cops or if it was the other guy. Maybe there was still a chance she could find out something new. "Coffee would be nice. Black is perfect." Lumen liked her coffee like she preferred her lights- black.
She looked around the room "So why do we need a fork?" she raised her eyebrow to Paul as if he might be in on some secret joke. She said it under her breath not wanting to look like a complete fool in front of this supposed future-see-er.
Jude explained about the payment process and the hand-holding. Lumen took that opportunity to let go of Paul and fish for her wallet in her pockets. "Up front payment is fine. And you dont mind me going solo dear, we've talked bout it right?" her own accent might as well have been colouring those words green. Damn. She really needed to work better on her American accent.
"So, should I tell you a question to look into the future for? Are your readings random? Or can they be focused." yup. Lumen was hitting every point on that list she had made up. If it was a question she'd zero right in on the missing kids. If it was random... well.. at least then she'd still have a better feel for this place and these people. One that would be more authentic than the cops.
Naveed and Raina were hugging at her gate. There were all of 5 gates in this airport and they were in the one at the farthest end. She had her carry on luggage- everything else was all ready checked. She passed her brother her big parka in favour of a lighter jacket. "Keep it for Sedna" she instructed. "She's so stubborn and wants a new parka the old way, but her eye sight is failing she wont be able to sew it." Naveed grinned and folded the parka over his arm.
From the corner of her eye Raina thought she saw someone. She did a double take. A business man who looked rather out of place in the community- walking with a posture she recognized. By the time she turned her head she knew it had only been her imagination. Damn Naveed for bringing up Luke.
"So... this is it." concluded Naveed after a moment of silence. Raina nodded and wrapped her arms around her brother one more time.
"You can come, you can come and visit me you know. "
"Hell no. Too warm." Naveed gave a belly laugh. Raina put her hand on her hip and gave him a look.
"I was just saying" she punched him in the arm. "I love you, I'll skype when I get the chance, or at least email at the air port. I dont know what the communication is going to be like on the Island. All the documents are being forwarded to the mansion via fax so something should end up there in a few days."
"Good bye little sister. Be safe. Be happy. Work hard. And. Sing." he gave her a knowing smile.
She waved and turned to get on the plane.
Naveed watched from the window as the passengers boarded the plane, it drove around the runway a little, and finally took off. The other expected planes of the day had landed and it was time to go home. It was always exciting when a plane came in. Movie stars were often detoured here for connections to avoid paparazzi. He figured they just weren't afraid of a few dozen natives with cameras. Sometimes the kids went south for sports trips too. They loved to travel, but they always loved to come home.
He was thinking about these things, remembering his own childhood when he nearly walked into a familiar face. A very familiar face. His own face stiffened and his eyes went wide in confusion. He couldn't process this moment. It made no sense. "Luke?!"
***
Raina watched the airport from the window of the plane until it became a little speck of nothingness. The plane gained altitude quickly and soon they were above the cloud cover with nothing but the Arctic ocean and ice flows beneath. She didn't mind swimming in cold water something about her mutation made it tolerable... but warm waters would be a welcome change.
All of this would be a welcome change. A new start. She came home to help herself heal and move on. She did her best to do it and to make a difference in her community. Now she was moving on for real.
She popped her ear buds in and fell asleep with her head against the window and a little Joel Plaskett singing in her ears
It didnt take them long to find the shop and Lumen was taking everything in right away. Riori had once called her a meercat because of the way she'd lift her head and look around. In 20 years she'd learned a bit about keeping your observations hidden.
The place certainly didnt look like it had been the hub of illegal activity or missing kids. It looked by many standards much better than the photos she'd seen. What had she expected... a bunch of evidence markers?
She hadn't realized as she entered the doorway she automatically reached for Paul's hand. It wasn't that she was feeling scared, or particularly affectionate... her mind was simply always turning and having a "boyfriend" who'd been here before and suggested she come seems a lot less suspicious. She wondered if Paul would get the reference or if he'd care for the reason. She smiled.
A young man greeted them and Lumen stared at him hard. Not an unfriendly stare. Just a stare. He seemed to be about her age, he could be a bit older. They were close in height and when he spoke she detected a very feint accent. "Hello." said Lumen.
She reached out a hand to shake his. In many settings, like this one, doing that was a little awkward. But it helped her get a better feel for a person. Literally. She always felt a little more confident in her position after a hand shake. "I'm Lumen, my .. boyfriend tells me you take walks in?" she hoped she wasn't sending Paul the wrong message here. She didn't want to hesitate too much before saying boyfriend but the truth was she'd almost said partner. "You've got a nice shop here."
She didn't want to jump right into the reading. She still wanted to see how much she could sniff out here...
Raina slid away from the computer and rolled the chair back. "How was skyping?" asked Naveed giving her a knowing smile.
"Eaves dropping are we?" grinned Raina right back. "It was fine, everyone at the mansion is happy. I let them know about my flight tonight and left my new contact address." She leaned back far in the chair. "They were happy just to hear from me."
"Do you have everything you need? I mean, it's strange for me to think you'll be leaving all this ice and snow for sun and sand. Uh, sunscreen?" he gave her a helpless shrug.
"Yes Navi, I've got sunscreen." she laughed standing up and stretching. The long sit had given her a crick in her back. "You and Sedna, so occupied with sunscreen."
"Well, Sedna's words are wise. You should heed them." Raina rolled her eyes at the lecture.
"Have you come to see me off then?" she asked leaning her weight against the computer desk and idly braiding her hair down the side.
Naveed was silent for a moment. "I... I just want to make sure this is really what you want." he said solemnly avoiding her gaze.
"What do you mean? What else could I want?" she asked
"New York, your mutant family, Lu-" she didn't let him finish before cutting him off.
"He left me. No the other way around. I wont Navi... You know how long I waited... I make no apologies for needing ... for needing warmth. God knows we don't get much of it up here." her eyes dropped and her posture sagged. "I waited and he never came back, he stopped calling, stopped writing. So I did exactly what he does and filled my time with work." it was clear she was still hurt. In truth, if she hadn't felt a little pressured by society to move on after so long she might still be back in New York pining away for a man who apparently forgot her.
"I'm sorry for bringing it up then." said Naveed obviously realizing his good bye was crashing into flames. "I just want you to be happy."
Raina crossed the space between them and embraced her brother. They pressed their forheads together in a common northern gesture. "I am. I will be. I've done all I can here brother, it's time for me to move on again. I can't let a wraith hold me back." Naveed nodded in agreement. "Besides, I didn't think you liked Luke one bit."
Naveed shrugged "I'll never like and man of yours. But I do want you to be happy. If going south will make you happy again, then you need to do it. Just remember to allow yourself to grieve Raina. You've lost someone and you refuse to face it. It's all going to catch up if you don't."
Raina nodded. "It's almost like he's dead, but he's not." she admitted. "I wont dwell on it any longer." she shook her head and pulled away from her brother. She grabbed the parka hanging by the desk and pulled it on. "You ready to take me to the airport? There's only one plane going out and one plane going in tonight. Next one wont be for a few days. I can't miss it and customs will take a while."
Naveed nodded gathering his things. He followed her out the door.
ooc: Paul and I were previously members known as Raina and Luke. Our characters were together but we both ended up leaving the forum for a while. When we returned we donned new characters and agreed our old ones didn't get the send off they deserved! So, this thread/fanfic is going to serve as their wrap up so we can have some closure with our characters. Luke and Raina are going to take turns posting so this thread will read like a thread as opposed to a story.
History Raina was a guidance teacher at Xavier's sister school. She was also employed at the local aquarium. Raina met Luke shortly after finally being freed from mutant registration camps and a bad break up with a certain he who shall not be named cop.
Luke was a kind hearted business man with some serious fighting skills. Luke also happened to be blind. Lucky for Luke his mutation involved using sonar to see. Upon learning this Raina decided she could use her mutation to introduce Luke to a more detailed world of sonar vision- the kind underwater. Pretty easy stuff for a mutant who turned into a mermaid whenever she got wet. Helped out a lot when Luke decided to go and drown.
Luke and Raina continued getting to know each other and it wasn't long before they fell in love. Their love and relationship saw them travelling the globe doing vision quests in the North where Raina was originally from; to romantic Paris trips cut short by evil Frenchmen. They went on stealthy missions and battled bad dreams. Things were really going places for this power couple... until their players went awol.

"Ainngai Sedna!" came the voice hidden behind the wind blown red hair and snow covered parka hood. "Qanuippit?" The young native woman lowered her hood as she stepped inside the winter hunting igloo. She crouched down across from an older woman with a face like leather. The older woman smiled and the details of faded facial tattoos crinkled under her skin.
"Qanuinngittunga?" said the woman with a grin pushing around the fat that was burning on the little lamp stove in front of her. "It's nice to see you Raina."
"I'm fine Sedna, thanks. I'm glad you're feeling well." Raina gave the woman Sedna as big a smile as she had shared.
"When will you be leaving?" asked Sedna. There was a pause of silence.
"Soon.... tomorrow..." admitted Raina.
"Do you miss him?" Sedna had a way of cutting right to the point. Raina didn't answer. "Well, you're still wearing the pearls I see." Raina stayed silent for a little longer.
"I'm going to the Caribbean." explained Raina "To work with the conservation effort. My mutation comes in handy there." Sedna passed her a cup of tea across the lamp. "Are you enjoying your time out here?" asked Raina trying to change the topic.
"Yes, I got a pimniq yesterday, the skin is drying outside I'll be turning it into a pair of boots sure enough. But these bones are old. I get weary in the ice house I'll be heading inside soon."
Raina sipped her tea "I am happy you go on the land. I am happy you take me. I am lucky I got to experience it."
"...but you're a child of the sea as much as you are the ice. You need to go where the sea takes you." said Sedna reaching across and placing her hand on Raina's. Their eyes met and they both smiled.
Raina had been home in the North for a year now. She'd been using her education to help out at the local schools. Her mutation of ice call helped during the hunting or other times on the land. She had even been able to move the ice for the supply boats when the ice breaker couldn't.
Being back home was nice. She felt much better than when she'd left. Her time in the states really helped her develop herself more and now that she was home she knew what had to be done. but Sedna was right. After being home for a year the sea was calling. The wildlife here was protected but not in other areas of the world. She still remembered the shark finning she'd witnessed in New York. She'd go to the warmer seas and educate about sustainability and enjoy her tail for a while.
"My Raina, you are a qaumaniq. You must follow your heart. I have something for you." she reached into a satchel and pulled out an ulu- a special knife given to young women for skinning furs. "I know you wont use it, but it's a traditional marker of womanhood." Raina graciously accepted the knife.
"I've been a woman for some time Sedna" she said still smiling.
"Oh I know my dear, I know. Just keep this and remember you always have us in you and you in us. Wherever you go you take our love and spirits with you." she gave Raina's hand a squeeze.
"Nakurmiik" said Raina bobbing her head and sipped her tea.
The woman slowed her pace a little more and Lumen knew she was beat. She slowed her own down to meet hers and felt her body relax a bit. Lumen was more in a warm down phase now- this was nice, this was easy. But having a conversation running was never ideal. Lumen didn't like being occupied with many tasks at once when she really needed to focus on receiving information.
"The poor parents must be feeling pretty desperate. If they're calling you- and I've seen canvassing around too." Her tone was serious, her expression hard. Lumen didn't know very much about it yet. Only what was public information. "I'm meeting with one of the detectives this week. Cervantes. I... hope I can help." she said those last 4 words dripping with intensity. She meant them. She'd rather stop hoping though, and start knowing she was going to be able to help.
The woman asked her next if mutants made her nervous. Well, miss red haired speedy runner Im akin to a kid being afraid of their own shadow. That probably wouldn't go over in her favour. She shook her head. "I just come from a place that seems a lot more segregated than here. A lot of hate crimes going on. If there is a mutant involved with the missing children I can't imagine that's a good thing for mutants or humans..." she stopped talking and running.
With one hand she grabbed one of her water bottles, with the other she flipped open the phone to take a quick check for messages. By the time she'd downed the water the phone was back in place. "I'm Lumen." she said holding out her hand and a business card. A clean crisp nothing but her name, email, and phone number on it business card. Lumen wasn't too creative that way. "I'm sure you'd probably rush to the police if you had any information to give on the case, but if you think or come across anything that might be helpful I'd love to chat."
Now, what was her name? She'd heard it on the news before. Did she introduce herself? Lumen couldn't remember and hoped it didn't show on her face. Justine... Maybeline... Cintrine... was this getting a little obscene?
