The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

A flush and a sigh later and Akshay was thoroughly washing his hands in the back restroom’s sink. Soap lathering up and covering his hands, he placed them under the stream of water that poured out from the faucet and completed wiped away all the soap that had once covered them. He was definitely looking forward to his meal for tonight and maybe even getting some work done on that statue after he was done with inventory. Tonight was going to be a pretty fun night for him.
He sighed as he stepped out of his bathroom, wiping his hands on a bundle of paper towels. As he dabbed and dried them, he tossed the now ruined paper into a nearby wastebasket and turned to check his inventory list. There were a lot of new titles in and just in time for promotional day! He hoped that he would be able to get through them all and still have time to work on the statue.
Shaking his head, he grumbled as he went through his list, sighing at the idea of having to fish through so many Weasel Man comics (definitely not his favorites). But just as he was checking off the next issue on the list, he paused when suddenly he caught hear the sound of a voice.
>> "You hear me?"
It was loud, piercing, and it sounded like it was coming from the front of his shop? Had someone gotten in and needed service? He blinked, trying to remember if he had indeed locked the door after he had walked in. In confusion he stepped out into the front area and peered around his store…nothing…
So far everything looked exactly as it had before. From here he could tell that the door was indeed locked and there was absolutely no one in the shop so it was not like he locked someone in. He was caught off guard, though, by the strong smell of Chinese food wafting across his nose. Maybe he was hungrier than he thoug—
He squeaked when he noticed that the bag of his Chinese food, his dinner for the evening, was tore into and half gone!
“What the hell?” he mumbled to himself as he cautiously walked into the front of the store, eyes directly on the open bag of demolished food containers and nothing else. “Hello?” he asked, not bothering to look down at the glass case or the figures that stood in complete and utter silence—and especially not at the figure that was standing on the other side of the glass that futilely attempted to communicate with them.

Another successful promotion day! Akshay was actually a little happy that this day turned out well, especially considering that he was now the new owner of this fine establishment. It was funny, when he told his fellow workers that he was buying the store, there was a collective sigh that finally the costume wearing was going to come to an end. But, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Akshay, being the experienced cos-player that he was, kept the promotional day costume wearing! And he did so with gusto.
Today, Akshay had decided to dress as one of his favorite heroes… Red Raptor, and damn was he able to ROCK the costume.
He had toiled and spent in order to make the costume as accurate and true to comic as possible. The fine, molded leather, the exact colors, the correctly seemed pants, even the cape was made from scratch but looked professional enough to be in a movie. Yes, even as the owner of this store, he was not a man that was going to go cheap with any of his costume makings. Yes…he perfectly embodied the vigilante hero that took on the name of a bird.
Akshay had his collapsible staff tucked safely into the utility belt while he hauled out another set of boxes that was bustling with new issues for the month. Now that the crowds had died down after the initial opening, Akshay could start bringing out some more inventory to replace those items that were sold or given away. It was time to take a breather and restock for the next possible wave of people…
…but as he stepped out from the back room, he suddenly came to a halt when he noticed that there was someone else in his comic shop. At first he couldn’t see them clearly because he was trying to keep the boxes in his hands from toppling over. He did notice that the person was female, which of course required his utmost attention….
“Sorry! Be right with you,” he said lightly as he turned to set the boxes down. Once he turned he turned back the woman, puffed out his chest to seem more superhero-like and sauntered over. “Welcome to One Comic to Rule Th—“
He paused, tilted his head, and peered at the woman through the mask cover his eyes. She…looked so familiar for some reason…

>> "Far cooler,"
He had to chuckled as he she raised her can of soda with him, took a long sip, and shared a laugh. He had no idea who this woman was save for the light conversations that they were having right now, but he had to admit that he was rather enjoying himself. Obviously, because he was always in a relationship, he was not going to be some scumbag and ask for his woman’s number, but there was nothing wrong with a little friendly chit-chatting and sharing drinks on a hot day, right?
It was just being neighborly.
>> "What happens if someone else has soda? We'll be less cool!"
Her question made him chuckle> he shook his head and waved his hand nonchalantly.
“Pfft! You and I know that we’re the originals,” he said matter-of-factly. “Anyone who tries that will just be a poser.”
Another long sip and he set the soda beside him, looking across the green lawns of Central Park, eyeing the various passer-bys. He was done looking for subjects right now, especially considering that he had already is pair of people caught in loving embraces down on paper. E was more than a little pleased with the results so there was really no dneed to go out and search for more.
For now, his lust for capturing moments of real life on paper with graphite was quelled. He would take his time working on the details of his current drawing and make it his best yet. That didn’t mean he could not chat with his new cohort, though…
“So, Sarah,” he started as he began to shade in the hair of his more cartoony characters. “if you don’t mind me asking, what do you do? Or did you make stalking people in the park and drawing their pictures a full time job?”

>> "Nah, everythings fine…I just wanted to see you today, that's all. I have the next few days off and things seem pretty quite on the whole crime fighting thing. So I figured I'd spend them with my best guy."
Akshay beamed. He was relieved that she was actually fine. He worried about her a lot because not only because her nocturnal activities, but also because of her affiliation with the X-men. It was totally cool; but it till made him worry just a bit that maybe she was throwing herself into a lot of danger. She obviously had a sense of justice but that still made him worry a bit. He hoped every time he called her that she would pick up the phone.
He sighed though, smiling, as he hugged her tightly. Her tail was wagging so quickly he feared that it was going to go flying off, but he said nothing on the matter. Instead he just grinned as ran his hands up and down her back and kissed her lightly on the shoulder.
“D’aww you’re going to make me blush,” he chuckled.
The last few months since he and Emerald started dating had been some of the best of his life; that that was even with them not being intimate! Akshay at first had figured that she wanted to take things so but eventually he figured that there was some trauma there. After she found that newspaper clipping he had used for a past issue of his comic, she nearly had a breakdown. It was then he knew just how scarred she was.
And yet he remained at her side. He cared for her so much that he couldn’t imagine just leaving her to suffer with her past alone. So he was patient and he never pushed her into taking things to any other levels.
Of course that didn’t mean that he never got urges now that then. But he was able to quell himself with a cold shower…a really cold shower…
…Ahem..
He blinked as Emerald detached herself from him, albeit reluctantly, and tilted his head as he watched her. So everything was fine but he had to admit that it still struck him as a little strange to suddenly have her appear in his apartment at random. He opened his mouth to inquiry and really make sure that everything was okay but she cut him off and began to speak before he could form a single word.
>> "Want to order a pizza or something and you can tell me about your day? Because by the look of you, you look exhausted. Also I can smell that Newman Ledge guy on you so I know he was in your store today."
He slumped a little, looking a little tired again as the name of Newman Ledge dredged up it irritations that he had today. It was not really something he wanted to live through again but that didn’t mean he didn’t want to talk about it. Who knows, maybe it would reenergize him a little bit to discuss it? Besides, he would get to spend the evening with his girl so why not?
“Yea! You know, that actually sounds really good,” he said with a beaming grin. “Just let me change into something more comfortable, okay?” He pulled off his heavy bookbag and set it onto a nearby chair. “Can you call in the pizza while I change?” he asked as he gave her a quick kiss on the lips and began to unbutton is shirt to switch to a more comfortable one.

>> "Unless you can get into the seal, I think I'm safe,"
He chuckled. She did have a point. But considering the fact that this lived in this city, which was a mecca for mutants, was it really that farfetched for her? Mutants had many strange and interesting powers. Some of them could be so off the wall and mundane that one would have never considered it an actual possibility. Who was to say he wasn’t a mutant with some ability to seep some strange chemical into an unopened can of soda?
…
…
…okay yeah maybe that was a bit far to think. But it technically was a possibility! Especially in this city, but, since that wasn’t the case, he was not going to worry about it. The girl seemed smart enough to know if she were in a dangerous situation or talking to someone that couldn’t be trusted, and Akshay Malik could definitely be trusted.
>> "Thanks. You'd think people would stay inside in this heat. At least it's not humid too. Then again, we're both out here, aren't we,"
He paused in his drawing, just barely finishing the outline and give the characters in his drawing a more comic book –like look with the use to heavy lines. He thought for second, mulled over her words, and just had to grin. She certainly had a point.
Another lyrical laugh fell from his mouth as he shook his head.
“Yeah, but there is obvious a difference between us and the rest of these people sweltering,” he beamed. He then held up his can of soda to clink against her’s in a gesture of camaraderie, “we have soda and are therefore, far cooler.”
He winked as he clinked his can against her’s (if she had interpreted his gesture correctly) and took another long sip. Ahh, life was good…

Akshay had smirked as his question actually seemed to make the young woman think for a moment. The smile on her face was proof enough that she really did not think his was some crazed axe murderer, or at least she was putting one on just so that she didn’t make any sudden moves (that seemed most unlikely.). Nah, he was sure that she was only interpreting what he said as a joke and he was happy for it. It was far too warm and lazy a day to be scared half to death.
>> "When I graduated, I thought I'd stalk little girls in New York to get a pretty picture for my wall,"
It was Akshay’s turn to laugh again. This woman had an excellent sense of humor. He just imagine the ludicrous though of this woman’s bedroom, walls covered with drawings of young women, men, what have you, pasted or taped up so that she could watch them obsessively for as long as she wanted to. It was such a creepy and disturbing thought that it made the young wordsmith shudder just a tad but he managed to still laugh it off. He was having far too much fun with this conversation and his time with this young woman.
“And here I thought I was the only one,” he chuckled as he turned back his drawing.
A glance up and he could see that his subjects were getting ready to leave now. The pawing, the stolen kisses, the hot day, it must have proved to be far too much for them to withstand any longer. Thankfully he had gotten down their basic forms and some of the shading already. Quickly he tried to memorize details about their clothing, accessories, and the entire scene around them.
Within moments, with a quick scratch of a detail or two on his paper, and he was free to let them go. He now had them firmly implanted in his mind so he doubted that he was going to forget any time soon.
A bead of sweat rolled down his cheek. Quickly he wiped it away and grumbled about it being hot. He took another sip of his refreshing soda and sighed. When he glanced over, he began to wonder if maybe Sarah was going to succumb to this heat too. Who knew, some people actually liked it like this! They were insane. A glance at his cooler and he grabbed it, pulling it over so that it was between himself and Sarah.
“Help yourself to a drink, if you are thirsty,” he said in a friendly manner. “I promise I didn’t drug any of it.”

It had been a long day. Akshay Malik was going to look forward to some down time at home; first he lost his key to the front doors and needed to wake up one of his employees from a restful sleep (promise them an extra day off and bonus) to rush the key over to him, next some kids tried to steal comics from his store and one managed to get away, and lastly, Newman Ledge paid his monthly visit to harass him about how sucky his store was. Akshay bit his tongue and did his best to not get drawn into a fight. That was the last thing the man needed. So far the store was surviving, but just barely. He really wished that Newman would just grow a soul or step into a pit to Hell or something…
But, he sighed as he climbed the steps of his building—first he would take a hot shower, then he would reheat that old pizza in the fridge, and lastly, he was going to give Emerald a call. He liked calling her on the phone when he got in. Normally he didn’t like bugging her while she was training, working, or doing X-Men stuff (gawd he still SQUEE’d at that! Dating an X-Man! He was totally cool!) but thankfully she took his calls. Her voice was always so nice to hear.
He whistled to himself as he adjusted the strap of his book bag. It felt heavier than normal today but that was fine. As he watched his apartment door closing in, he realized just how happy he was to see it. He groaned as he pried the bag off of his body, unlocked the door, and slipped in.
Silently he walked across his living room, heading for his bedroom and relishing the idea of just kicking off his shoes, dropping his jeans and…
…there was a beautiful redhead in his bed. And not just ANY redhead, it was his sweetness Emerald Lupin. He smirked, the wave of tiredness fall off him like dust in the wind.
God, she really did look gorgeous in her tank top and jeans, flowing red hair, and a tennis ball in her mouth. Yes he did find that sexy! It was just one of the many things he really did come to enjoy about Emerald’s company. With her there was always something new.
>> “Hey Sketch welcome home!”
“Hi Red!” he beamed as she hugged him warmly. He could only comply as he hugged her just as tightly. This was definitely a sight he wanted to see at the end of such a crappy day. He chuckled as he ran his hands up and down her back, feeling the whooshing of her tail as it wagged happily. “This is a surprise! I wasn’t expecting you here tonight! Is everything okay?” he asked.
Not that there was nothing wrong with her just showing up at his place, but it didn’t hurt to make sure that she was alright.

>> "I didn't mean it like that!"
Akshay had to chuckle heartily at the woman’s huff that she had not meant that comment in the way that he had taken it. Of course he knew that she didn’t really mean that but it was still too amusing to stop poking fun at her. Maybe if she stuck around he would jab at her again with a reminder of her little faux pas. After all, it was all in good fun so where was the harm in that?
He just beamed, though, when she finally introduced herself.
>> "Sarah Jackson. The pleasure is all mine."
Sarah…cute name! He shook her hand gently as he turned back to his drawings and she to hers. A glance had shown him that the pair had found completely different targets. While she was focus on the individual, he had decided to target a scene. Her’s was a subject of study, while his was focused on capturing a moment of time. It was actually interesting to see a fellow artist at work, looking at the same world as he was and seeing something completely different.
For a moment he wondered what had actually inspired her to pick that subject of hers. She was paying excellent attention to the head and torso. It really was a pretty sight.
He smirked as he continued sketching out his own piece, finally completing both bodies of his subjects and continuing with his shading. That was it, they were caught forever, together, on this sheet of course paper, etched on with graphite smears and smudges. It was a section of time that could never be spoiled…
The sounds of his fellow artist drawing drew his attention though. There was no harm in friendly conversation, right?
“So are you an art student?” he asked innocently. “Or just some strange person like me, drawing people at random with nefarious intent?”
That was a joke, of course. Hopefully she would just take it as that and won’t think he was some serial killer sketching out his next victims.

Akshay ran until his lungs hurt. That statue looked so exquisite, how could he let a bunch of no good kids destroy it for giggles?! It was just wrong! No, he was not going to allow something like this to happen! So he ran, he shouted, and for a second it seemed like it was going to work. They looked scared enough at being interrupted, but just as they turned and ran, he saw the fuse lit. He cursed in his head, especially at that tall kid, before he paused and ducked down behind a trash can.
There was no way that he would get there in time to stop it.
The alley screamed and echoed with the blasts of angry firecrackers. They burst in succession, shouting their unknown obscenities into the sky and reverberating on the close ways, bouncing back and forth until Akshay could feel the ringing reach a cacophony in his ears. He winced and ground his teeth , trying to keep himself from going deaf by covering his ears; but it barely did any good.
When it was finally over, the young wordsmith groaned as he uncovered his ears, wincing, and moved onto his two feet. He felt horrible that he couldn’t save that thing in time. From the last look of it, it looked so detailed, so real! Almost as if someone had grabbed a goblin and dipped him into stone. He grumbled as he kicked a can away in frustration and turned. Maybe he could at least salvage the head or somethi—
“Whoa…no…FREAKINGWAY!!” he grinned wide as he peered down, noticing that the statue was completely intact!
What a save! What a miracle! What a…what the hell was that thing MADE of? He shook his head as he crept closer to investigate. It was still perfect! All the firecrackers had exploded and most of the ducttape was burned away. He could only marvel as he reached down and, struggling, hefted the statue up into his arms. It was a heavy little sucker but he couldn’t think about that, it was just so damn beautiful! It need a good polishing, cleaning, and paint job, but it was gorgeous nonetheless! He sighed happily as he took off as much duct tape as he could and turned to head out of the alley. He needed to get this little guy back to his comic shop before any other weirdoes attempted to blow him up again.
***
A short time later, after the sun began to set, Akshay FINALLY arrived back in his shop, carrying one messed up back of Chinese food, and a very heavy goblin statue. As soon as he had walked in, he locked the door behind him and sighed at the feeling of the cool air conditioner. Though inventory was not his favorite thing to do, with his new find, he was skipping on cloud nine. He really was looking forward to cleaning and painting that little bugger. But first, he needed to take care of some…business.
Gently he set the goblin statue on his counter, his Chinese food next to it, and dashed for the back room. Nature was calling and he HAD to answer!

>> "I do if the stranger happens to be a fellow artist,"
He smirked. Ah fellow artists, they always loved to flock together. Akshay could not count the times that freelance artists would speak to him whenever he was caught outside with his sketchpad. Honestly, he understood why, there was just something about artists being together that made them all want to chat, swap techniques, share war stories, it was just that type of profession.
He gazed at the sketchpad she had and he had to nod his head. She really was quite good. A glance at the drawing and he looked out of the corner of his eye, spying the woman whom was the subject of the artists impression. She didn’t get much of her down but what was there was actually very good! He wondered if she was one of the many art students that tended to frequent Central Park for natural inspiration.
“That’s very good,” he said with a tint of awe in his voice.
They settled back in and once more return to their drawings. The large exerciser had finally jogged away, leaving him a perfect view of the young couple who were still lying about in the sun. He smirked as he started to fill in the blank details; the pattern of her dress, the shine of his hair, the longing looks in their eyes. Wow, with the way that she was pawing at his arm, constantly, he figured that they were going to be hightailing it back to their home before long.
He finished sketching out their bodies as much as he could in the meantime. He had just started to shade in their calves when the woman spoke again…
>> "Sorry if I said something…Suggestive? My brain's used to thinking up fast replies without a censor."
A mischievous smirk fell across his lips as he shook his head. He actually enjoyed such banter like that, though it had been awhile since he had partook of it.
“Don’t worry about it,” he beamed. “Trust me, in my circles, I’ve heard far worse and far less subtle than taking out your ‘slip n’slide’.” Just thinking about that comment actually made the man laugh heartily. He sighed and shook his head when he was done with his giggling fit. He finally turned to face her fully. A friendly smile on his face, he offered her his hand, “Akshay Malik. It’s a pleasure to meet a fellow artist.”

>> "I think I can handle a few roots. Besides, I have you to protect me, don't I?”
Akshay…blinked.
His expression was a bit deadpan for a moment there, shocked and unsure of really how to continue. This was the classic Akshay, the Akshay before dating a wonderful, redheaded she-wolf; the Akshay that loved to flirt and had a witty tongue for any young woman that attempted to cross his path. It was funny that he was actually taking notice of this part of himself. Normally it was so subtle and unconscious that he never would have realized it.
But he had to now. Not only was he dating a woman but she would more than likely rip out his lungs if he had so much as touched another woman.
Still…that didn’t mean that he couldn’t be friendly, could he?
He smirked as he nodded.
“Hah, well, I do have a reputation to be a botantical terror…” he chuckled. He remember his adoptive mothers rose bushes. Gawd, how many of them had he accidentally killed in his lifetime? It was a good thing she never called him anymore to house sit whenever she and his father went away for trips.
He turned back his attention though as the young woman took a seat nearby. His most wittiest of quips was thrown out and instantly he regretted it. That was such a clichéd and stupid thing to say! She probably thought he was some mental patient now. He grumbled silently as he took another sip from his bottle of soda, swirling the contents idly in the bottle as he looked ahead.
>> "A few more degrees higher and I might just have to get the slip-n-slide out…You always this chatty with girls you just met or is it just the heat getting to you?"
…
…yeah he wouldn’t acknowledge that first part of the conversation. WAY too dangerous.
But he grinned at her question; was he always this chatty with girls? In reality, Akshay really was! It was not just in order to hit on women but a lot of it was because he just felt more comfortable around girls. In school the majority of his friends were girls and even now the majority of people he spoke to were women. There was just something different about him, like his brain was wired to chat with women better than the average man. After all, Akshay was not really the beer-swilling, sport-watching, car-talking kind of guy! And most comic nerds like him, well, he really did not want to be left alone with them for more than a few minutes.
So, he would be honest.
“Who says it can’t be both?” he chuckled as he took another sip. “Do you always just sit with handsome strangers?”

Akshay simply could not understand why fat guys who started working out always went for the teeniest, tiniest workout shorts they could find. The whole concept made Akshay shutter but, like the gravitational force of the sun, he could not look away. The young wordsmith was busying himself with trying to find a subject to draw when he settled onto a young couple lounging on a picnic blanket, sharing food. They would be the perfect study since they were not going to go anywhere any time soon.
…sadly, just as he was getting the basic shapes for his characters, the large man (in what had to be the “manliest” shade of pink training shorts) jogged into his field of vision. He blinked as the man bent over to start stretching his ham strings. Akshay felt the stirrings in his stomach. That is not to say he was a judgmental man but dude, look in a mirror before you leave a house!
He shuddered as he attempted to work with the figures he had laid out already. The graphite of his pencil scratched and scraped across the paper, darkening his lines and adding tiny details he could remember. But, when he reached the end of those, he cautioned a glance up to get more information.
Hopefully that man was gooooooo---
It was suddenly as if his brain just gave him the blue computer screen of death! A very pretty woman now replaced the large man in his line of sight. She smiled sweetly as she stood before him and for a second Akshay forgot what his name was.
Wait…she didn’t ask his name.
He shook his head as he tried to zero in on her voice…
>> "Hello. Do you mind if I sit with you?"
“No I wasn’t!” he blinked and shook his head. Stupid. “Err, I mean, sorry. Had a bit of a senior moment there. Hehe. I mean, sure, you can if you like. Careful though, the roots of this tree keeps trying to get friendly with me,” he beamed as he turned back to his drawing.
He reached for his drink inside of the cooler and took a long sip. He was beginning to feel a tad warm again. He probably should have decided on a better outfit than the light gray, red lined, “I’m-Not-A-Superhero” t-shirt and blue jeans he was wearing. The warmth was to the point that he had to roll up the sleeves of his shirt to make it quasi-tank top-like; a motion which revealed his own Ka-POW! tattoo.
He glanced at the woman again before he just smirked and remarked, in his very witty way, “Hot enough for ya?”
Siiiiiiiiiiiigh… Where was Emerald to kick his ass when he needed her?
