The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

They were still so very close. Quin could feel the heat coming from Nate, and she simply stood there, smiling at him stupidly as he said that she was welcome to the canvas. Momentarily regretting her question about painting when Nate moved away, Quin watched as he moved away and started gathering supplies. She left him to it, assuming that the man knew his trade better than she possibly could, and enjoying the view as he gathered.
Nate spoke, and Quin could immediately tell that something was wrong. Maybe it was his tone of voice, or the way his facial features had tightened slightly, but Quin noticed and frowned, listening with no small amount of apprehension. Here was the part where Nate told her that he was a recovering homicidal psychopath, or that he was actually a woman, or maybe that he had his last date locked in a cage in the closet. Only…it wasn’t any of those things at all.
It was that he had a pet. Quin’s mind latched on the word for the split-second before Nate could get the rest of his sentence out. A pet wasn’t a bad thing, not at all!
Except that it was a cat-sized spider. A cat sized spider that had just brushed its hairy body up against her legs as it made its way to its owner.
A small lady-like squeal escaped Quin’s lips and she scurried backwards, putting several feet between her and the giant arachnid.
Nate was looking at her, and Quin gave him a helpless look, eyes darting back and forth between him and the spider. She wasn’t going to leave. Not after how well everything had gone. A spider was not nearly as bad as things could have been…even a cat-sized one.
But still…Quin groaned a little.
”Why did it have to be a spider?”
The redhead took a deep breath, let it out, and swallowed, licking her lips in nervousness as she tried to get her mind to pull out of fight-or-flight mode.
”Parker…like Peter Parker?” she said, trying to see the thing nibbling at Nate's shoe as anything other than the object of some of her worst nightmares.

As far as first kisses went…this one was real good. Somehow they’d found themselves close together. Too close to simply ignore the fact without some awkwardness. It had been this, or walk away, and Quin had to admit to herself that she very well might have been a little hurt if Nate had turned and walked away.
The kiss itself was sweet, longer than something that could be considered truly innocent, but short enough that there was hardly a need to come up for air. Nate had made the move, and Quin approved. Nate pulled away and smiled, and the redhead smiled back, noting that her hands had found their way to his chest. Anything but an unpleasant place to come to rest.
”I don’t mind. Not at all.” Quin said, knowing that her cheeks were flushed and her heart was fluttering just a little bit. Now was the possibly awkward part. What did you do after the kiss?
”So…” she said with a slow smile, content to stay where she was for the time being. ”Do you have anything in mind for the blank canvas…or would you mind a novice throwing some paint at it?”
All said while the aforementioned pet skittered in the background, still unnoticed.

Nate was impressed, Quin could tell, and it made her smile even more. Her ability seemed pretty innocuous at first glance, but Nate could appreciate it, and even had a suggestion of how she could get into the arts.
”If I had a single artistic bone in my body, I might consider the possibility.” she said as he took the little ball of plastic from her hand.
”As it stands…I could probably only make a poor impersonation of that cup I just ruined.” she said with a mock-rueful smile. ”I hope you weren’t too attached.”
When Nate put his hand on her cheek, Quin leaned her head into it and smiled. He liked all of her surprises, the only problem was....
Quin chuckled and met Nate’s eyes. When had he gotten so close?

The wait for a response….was too long. Quin mentally cursed herself for being so damn honest, then slapped her mental self for being such a coward. It wasn’t like her mutation was something she could, or would, hide forever. It would be a shame, but she would move on.
The redhead was looking for somewhere to set down her half-empty espresso cup when Nate finally spoke, and she froze mid-step.
He was a mutant too. Quin positively beamed.
The next few moments were a bit of a blur. There was a relieved explanation about his power, and then a demonstration. His shadow could turn into a cat! Other things too, apparently! Quin was relieved. SO relieved.
Her host had graciously shown her his mutation, and was now requesting a similar demonstration.
Quin could do that. The off-duty officer smiled at the request, remembering the first time she and Ashton had gone on a call together. Quin had tried to show off then, and had fallen on her face. The same would not be true here.
”That’s a neat trick with your shadow.” Quin quipped with a grin, ”But I can do more than parlor tricks too.”
Casting her eyes around, Quin settled on what she hoped was an empty plastic drinking glass, she focused and she could feel the polymers singing their special little song. Holding her right hand out, Quin concentrated, and the cup flew into her outstretched fingers.
”But wait, there’s more!” she said, with a grin, turning the cup so the open and closed ends were between her palms. A little more concentration and the redhead brought her hands together, effectively smashing the cup into a ball of goo with the consistency of silly putty.
”It only works with synthetics.” Quin said, closing the distance between herself and Nate and holding out the little ball she’d made from his cup. If he took it, the ball would be as solid as the cup had been, but to her it felt like play dough.

Quin nodded her head when Nate explained that the river scene was something he remembered. The redhead smiled as she took the coffee…which was coffee. She sipped. Good coffee too.
”It would be an amazing thing to actually be able to paint the pictures in your head.” she commented idly as she sipped again.”I know there’ve been times when I’d have given a lot to be able to do what you do.”
Things were going well. Almost too well for a first date. It was a first date after all.
”So. I guess this is where we jump to the whole ‘getting to know you’ phase.” she said with a shrug, ”For starters….” she added, with a deep breath.
”I’m a mutant.”
It was a bold proclamation, but something Quin liked to get out of the way early in possible relationships. There were still people out there who were sheep, and had a problem with the whole x-gene thing. The redhead had always tried to let things like that roll off like water…but this time, she couldn’t help but hope.

It wasn’t a long walk, and suddenly Quin felt a little bad about making Nate walk all the way to her apartment simply to pick her up for dinner. ”Well, next time I’ll just have to meet you here.” Quin said, and then she did blush because she’d just suggested that there would be a second date.
Up the steps they went, and Quin stepped away a bit while Nate worked on opening the door to his apartment. The wine hadn’t exactly gone to her head, but Quin still had the momentary cop’s instinct of wondering whether or not she was making a good decision here. This was only the first date, and she was walking into a secluded living space.
Decision time.
Quin walked into the apartment.
It really was a “gallery.” There were paintings in various places, and Quin found herself drawn to the sunflowers. It really was a good imitation, but then she saw the river scene.
”This is gorgeous!” she said, approaching the thing and looking at it for a moment before moving to the blank canvas.
”I assume this is your interpretation of….air? A blizzard? Either way, it’s lovely too.”

”I will have you know that I am flushed and not blushing.” Quin pointed out primly as they walked down the street. New York sunsets were lovely things, and they were being treated to a particularly fine one as they made their way to Nate’s “gallery.”
”Blushing happens when you’re embarrassed or flirting. Flushed is what happens when I drink.” Was she drunk? No. But Quin was definitely on the near side of tipsy and the banter felt nice. So did the arm she took when Nate offered it.
”So as gallant as your offer of an excuse for taking your arm was. I vastly prefer simply taking it because I want to.” Forwardness, Quin is thy name. Hopefully Nate wouldn’t mind.
”So how far are we walking?” the redhead asked, ”And my insistence to see your art didn’t ruin any other plans you might have had for the night, did it?”

Ahhh, the boys always liked the idea of the handcuffs. Well, at least the ones who’d never had to wear them for real and were clueless as to how uncomfortable the things really were. Quin smiled and shook her head. Nate had upped the ante a bit, and the redhead wondered if it was a test.
“I wish I had a dollar for every time I’d heard that…” she teased gently, ”But, yeah, keeping them out of the business column would be good.”
They continued to chat amiably through the meal, which did anything but disappoint. Contrary to the general social norm, Quin ate her fill, and probably then some. The food was too good to let go to waste, even for the sake of impressing a date. Besides…it was eggplant, and eggplant was healthy…right? The redhead went with that, ignoring the fact that it had been fried, doused with cheese and sauce, and plated on top of a pile of complex carbohydrates. She’d run tomorrow.
Soon enough, the food, and the wine, were gone. Uh oh. How had that gone and happened so quickly? How many glasses had she had? Quin finished off her glass and noticed that her cheeks were unusually warm. Uh oh, she’d gone and gotten just a little tipsy.
The waitress headed their direction, and Nate gave her the choice of where the night went. Literally. Espresso at his place? Sure, if espresso really meant espresso and not...something that a lady didn't do on a first date.
Nearly giggling at the thought that coffee could mean anything but coffee, Quin made her decision. ”Espresso sounds nice. I want to see those paintings.”

Ahh, so he was a man after her own heart. That could prove interesting, Quin thought as the waitress walked away and Nate explained himself. Quin could see it now. She had a tendency to make everything she did into a little competition, if Nate was the same way, soon enough they’d be playing games for everything.
The food was ordered, the wine was poured, and Quin reached for her glass about the same time Nate did. He stopped partway to his mouth and proposed a toast just in time for Quin to stop herself from drinking.
To doing whatever it takes to get what you want.[/color]
Quin smiled. ”To doing whatever it takes.” she said, smile faltering just slightly at that thought.
”Within reason.”

Quin laughed outright at the mere idea that she would be competition for a professional artist. The ruse was fun though, and she fixed Nate with a look, one eyebrow raising slightly.
”You wouldn’t want to call me competition.” she admitted shamelessly. ”See…I hate to lose at anything. One of those many flaws I was telling you about before.” She glanced to one side, then to the other, as if to make sure nobody else was listening. "I'll do anything to win...I've even been known to cheat on occasion." It was shameful, but it was true.
As if on cue to interrupt the flow of conversation, the waitress arrived. She brought wine with her, so Quin forgave the girl and waited patiently while Nate ordered his food. A solid choice, Quin decided, but her mind had been made up the moment she’d seen her item on the menu.
”Eggplant Parmesan please.” she said, smiling as the girl walked away.
”Now where were we?” she asked, mocking forgetfulness.

Once she and Nate had given the waitress their drink orders the girl had moved off and they’d been able to continue the conversation they’d started before they’d been interrupted. Quin had to smile and shake her head a bit at what her handsome companion said, though.
”I’m anything but perfect.” she admitted candidly, ”I was just being coy.”
It seemed as though the impromptu after-dinner art show was a go, and Quin nodded her pleasure at Nate. ” You’re definitely on. Maybe I’ll turn out to be some kind of savant and won’t need the whole cop thing for an income after all...”
Nate didn’t seem to be too interested in the menu, but Quin was new to this place so she opened hers and glanced over everything with the most critical eye she could manage. Her eyes settled on one mean in particular, though, and she smiled.
”Definitely ready.” she said, re-folding the menu and smiling across the table.
”This place really is charming.” she admitted, truthfully. The little tables, the candles…the atmosphere was wonderful and romantic, all in all, an excellent start to the evening.

”What makes you think that there is anything bad.” Quin said, pushing her hair back over her shoulder so it stayed out of her way while they ate.
Nate thought for a few moments, then offered to show her some of the work he’d been speaking about earlier. Quin smiled and thought about that for a second. She still didn’t know Nate very well, and she’d be going into his apartment alone with him. Still…she was far from helpless and he had been nothing but a gentleman. Besides, she wanted to see the paintings.
”I think I’ll take you up on that if it doesn’t ruin any other plans you have for the night. I’d really like to see your work. Maybe you can teach me a thing or two.”
The waitress arrived then, and Nate ordered them win. Mmm, wine. He was batting a thousand so far, and Quin’s mouth watered a bit at the thought.
Speaking of which. ”I’ll take a glass of water too.”

” I’m sure you’ve got plenty of good things to show me.” Quin said when Nate artfully dodged her request to see his work. ”In fact, I’d rather see the things you made before I was interested in seeing. But I’d be willing to wait too.”
They made it to the restaurant and Quin was a little shocked that she’d never stumbled on the place before. Strictly speaking, she cooked for herself. Police salaries weren’t exorbitant, and New York was an expensive city. The redhead treated herself every now and then though, and prided herself on her good taste in restaurants. This one, however, was new, and Quin immediately liked it when they walked in.
Nate had apparently been there a few times, and he’d apparently talked about her. The bartender/host led them to a table, and Quin sat. There were breadsticks on the table, not the nasty crunchy ones, the soft and delicious ones.
Once the old man walked away, Quin grinned and grabbed a bread stick to tear it in half and start eating. Yeah. Delicious.
”So you were talking about me.” she said. ”I hope it was all good.”

Quin grinned at Nate’s admission that he’d been anticipating their date, and that it had inspired him to paint. ”I’d love to see your work sometime….” she said. Quin had never known a career artist before and she wondered exactly what Nate’s style was. ”And I’d love to ask more, but I don’t know very much about art, other than it’s nice to look at…”
The walk was nice, and the proximity even nicer. Something about the almost deliberate brushing of their hands and shoulders was even more exciting than if he’d grabbed her hand. This spoke of comfort and no need to rush things. Quin could appreciate that.
He called her his ‘girl in blue’ and as much as Quin wanted to giggle at the possessive, she wrinkled her nose a bit at the rest of the moniker. The redhead hated cop stereotypes, but Nate had just been being sweet. And he wanted to know more. Quin took a moment to think, and ended up slightly surprised at what she realized.
”Almost five months.” she said, ”But I’ve been with the force almost two-and-a-half years. You have to be on the beat for a while before they’ll let you work towards getting your shield. I was just eligible in May.”

Why was she blushing so easily? She could stand in a group of male officers and joke like one of the guys, her quips as ribald and dirty as the ones they made. There was no reason a simple compliment should make her cheeks pink. Maybe that was just it, though. Nate didn’t try to make those jokes with her, and he’d kissed her hand like a lady. Had it really been that long since something like that had happened?
”I love Italian food.” Quin admitted when Nate said that was where they were headed for dinner. ”And I like family owned places even more.” Even if money wasn’t an issue, Quin always felt awkward ordering somewhere like that.
He asked if they should be on their way, and Quin nodded her head as she came down the stairs and fell into stride next to Nate, walking almost shoulder to shoulder with him. This was nice, and hopefully it would get even nicer as the night went on.
”How goes the painting?” she asked, thanking small talk for being a balm for awkwardness.
