The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Khalil flew behind June, and slightly above, watching her progress warily. Learning to fly was like learning to ride a bike. It had taken many months of practice for the young Khalil to master. He was surprised June had gotten it so quickly--
Of course, right around the time that this conscious thought crossed his mind, June plummeted momentarily, sending a thrill of terror through the demon. He dove to catch her, but she managed herself before losing too much altitude. Sure, he was an arsonist, and whether-or-not he'd ever killed someone was open to debate, but seeing such a beautiful face splattered on the sidewalk was not on his to-do list for the evening. June was a nice girl-- a nice, power-copying girl-- and she didn't deserve such an unjust end.
Khalil righted himself too, now flying slightly below her. This position was far better, in case he needed to catch her.
A mischevious smile crossed his expression. What an absolute imp.
"Well, alright then-- let's stick it to the man."
He was starting to feel giddy, too-- maybe after they stole some stuff, he could set a few things on fire. Burn a mannequin. The possibilities were endless.

"Mmm, mai tai," the red-skinned demon said approvingly, his tail flicking and curling as he lounged. Primal laid the rest of the order, and Khalil took the opportunity to nestle closer, a smile upon his lips. At least the man beside him had good taste.
"Depends on how fast I fly~" he trailed, running a taloned finger down Primal's shoulder, "It's kind of like endurance running. Slow and steady, and all that~ I can go for a few hours if I take it easy..."
Khalil brushed back a few strands of hair. Since they were taking this opportunity to ask questions about each other, he hazarded, "How did you come to possess such unique pets?"
The gargoyle's eyes swept over the room, which was... well... far tidier than hers ever was, even on a good day. Once the semester started, all hope of cleanliness was lost. While her walls were cluttered with photos, Vanessa hung tapestries and a weapon. It was very Nessa. Nerdy. Cute. Cleeeean. The gargoyle trailed behind Nessa, waiting for her girlfriend to settle first, before determining a place for her to sit.
Fries were deposited onto the nightstand, and the two spilled into the bed. Nessa adjusted the lights to a more... tolerable level of light. Gina shrugged her shoulder free of her bag, letting the strap pool, and she unzipped the main compartment, fishing-out a fat paperback entitled "Dimensions of Human Behavior" and a purple-inked pen. Tonight's homework was simple enough-- do the reading... annotate as needed... that was it. Vanessa, having retrieved a fry, laced her arms around the gargoyle's waist.
>> ”Okay! You have your study stuff. You have your study snack! You have your study Nessa. I think we’re totally ready for some studying,”
Gina took the opportunity to exchange a kiss with the brunette once again, this time planting a kiss on her forehead.
"My study Nessa," she said with a grin, leaning over to reach for a fry, or perhaps two. For fear of dribbling dipping sauce on the floor, the first two fries were eaten plain.
"Hhhh-alright," the gargoyle sighed, nibbling the fries as she fanned the pages of her textbook, "Reading."
She quickly flicked through the pages-- oops, passed the chapter-- backtracked, before landing on the chapter of reading (that would technically be due tomorrow. Gina gave an emphatic yawn. Despite her apparent disinterest, Human Behavior and the Social Environment was one of her favorite courses-- she found the topic interesting. It was just... well... poetry had probably shortened her attention span when it came to reading.
Book and pen in-hand, Gina scootched back on the bed, leaning against her wings, against the wall, before re-opening her book.

The gargoyle giggled at Nessa's sentiment, trailing complacently after her. Her tail flicked idly, and she retrieved her bag to move it closer to the couch, where she assumed they'd be settling... Nessa froze. Gina looked after her girlfriend inquirngly.
Nessa had a better idea-- study in the bedroom. To avoid the lure of t.v. Gina glanced at the t.v. She didn't watch much t.v., as it was, but... that sounded like a good preemptive measure to take. Can't fall down the rabbit hole of watching t.v. And... the gargoyle flushed to think what other non-studying activities might follow.
Getting caught inflagrante, if that was a concern (was it a concern? they'd been taking it slow, after all), wasn't Gina's top preoccupation... namely because the gargoyle hadn't once seen the rumored older brother of Nessa. He was like some sort of cryptid, a blurry photo of bigfoot. She'd seen suggestions that a guy might live here, mostly in the form of toiletries and books she couldn't fathom being of interest to Nessa... but she'd never seen the brother, the librarian, himself.
"Works for me~" Gina sang, slinging her bag over her shoulder, "I tend to study in my room anyways."
Sometimes it was the only way she could get work done, sprawled on her tummy and facing the wrong way on her bed. The gargoyle meandered behind Nessa up the hall.
The gargoyle listened to Nessa's recount a tad distractedly, though she nodded diligently.
"Ooo, some drawing?" the gargoyle said enviously. Most of her work was comprised of classwork and half-*ssed doodles from during lecture. Nessa's hands upon her hips sent tingle up Gina's spine. It wasn't hard for her to fall into the kiss, head-over-heels. To say that she lost herself in there, somewhere, was an understatement.
Gina's reaction to the obnoxious buzzer was slightly more dramatic, causing her to start in surprise. Her tail might've knocked a spices from a spice rack in alarm.
"Ah-" the gargoyle breathed, sliding off the counter to fix the fallen spices. Having readjusted the mess she left, Gina leaned against the counter, eyes following Nessa towards the oven.
>> ”Not that I want to question a good thing, but I’m surprised you had time to come over. I thought you might be busy with homework or studying tonight?”
Gina's gaze flicked to bag she'd deposited by the couch-- filled with good intentions in the form of homework, before flicking back to Nessa.
"World War Roommate," Gina said simply, grimacing. She'd mentioned a few times, to Nessa, that the other two ladies she lived with were frequently at-odds with one another. This often propelled Gina towards other places to study... these days, Nessa's, if she wasn't too busy. She shrugged and smiled, though, "Un-for-tun-ate-ly~"
She sang the word in a tone that was evidence to the contrary. It was not unfortunate at all. As if she needed an excuse to visit.

Gina stumbled into motion as Nessa all but pulled her into the kitchen, never once releasing her. This earned a chuckle, as well an appreciative, "Mmmm, sweet potato fries," from the gargoyle. She could smell the sweet-but-savory scent trying to entice her already. There was something far more distracting in front of her, however, in the form of a peachy-complected girlfriend before her.
"So silly~" the gargoyle teased, inclining her head for maximum head-kissing ease. She was a greedy gargoyle, however-- as Nessa leaned to flick the lights off (a gesture for which Gina was grateful), Gina eased onto the counter, putting her more level with her girlfriend. She kept her tail close, and fanned her wings slightly so as not to knock things off the counter. From the newfound vantage point, Gina stole another kiss.
"It was fine... but this is nice, too..." she replied between kisses, smiling. She drank in Nessa's appearance as if it'd been ages since they'd seen each other, before her brown eyes snagged Nessa's own. Another smile. Her thoughts were warm and vague and insistent. They had to make up for lost time. Gina just wanted to let her hands wander. But patience, manners-- okay, maybe another kiss.

The red-skinned man was enchanted. He flew just behind his newfound companion, primarily to make sure she didn't suddently topple out of the sky. His younger "still learning to fly" days were filled with bumps and bruises, and even a broken arm. He'd begun by jumping off the roof his suburban house, then decided that it wasn't a matter of "too young to fly" but "too low of a launching point". He next jumped off of the two-story building of his school... and miraculously only broke his arm.
June seemed to be doing pretty well, though.
He also followed her because it was absolutely fascinating to watch someone else fly.
>> "It's almost pretty down there."
"Almost," Khalil agreed airily.
He followed his friend's gesture towards the modern-looking building, the surface of which was adorned by glass-curtainwalling. It was a glamorous building.
"You're stealing from the place you work?" Khalil clarified, tone unreadable. And here he'd thought she was just going to shoplift. Huh. He was still following her, still intrigued. This was nothing according to the blotches on his own record.

Gina's cheeks were flushed lavender when her eyes fell upon Vanessa. Maybe it ws the chill that still clung to Gina from her flight-- but it was probably the sight of girlfriend. What was the use of even lying? Her expression brightened. The two exchanged a kiss, a frigid gray hand lightly touched the side of the taller woman's neck, before they parted slightly.
The observation of her obvious chill spurred a giggle from the gargoyle, who was willingly led into the apartment. Her wings fluttered cheerfully.
"It's a little chilly up there today," the gargoyle admonished, to explain-away her coolness. On sunny days, she came in toasty-warm, like a stone that'd been left in the sun-baked sand. Today was a different story. Of course, the cold left her feeling a bit sluggish, but that was nothing that a warm room and a few cozy moments with her girlfriend couldn't fix. Presuming Nessa would let the diminutive woman sap her body-heat. First things first, she set her bag down on the floor. Then came the glasses-- after a brief fight with the strap, Gina was free of the shades, "Ah, better, now I can actually see--" the shades were deposited on the couch-side table.
She winced at the influx of light, but it was... bearable... inside. The gargoyle then surrendered her wrists to Nessa once again, having shed two inconveniencing accessories from her persons. Cheerful brown eyes lingered on Nessa's own, full of wordless questions.
"Guess I'll have to... steal body-heat from you?" the gargoyle hazarded mischievously, using the excuse to wrap her arms around Nessa. Hugs were good, but hugs under the pretense of torment were better. Yes-- surrender to the horrible frosty arms. Minding her horns, Gina nestled her face in the crook of Nessa's neck, grinning impishly.
Gina balanced skillfully atop a Gothic-style cathedral, where one section of roofing met another. Her wings were fanned-out behind her, her legs splayed-out in front of her. No one paid her much (if any) heed-- the gargoyle surmised it was because she looked like she belonged there. Her taloned fingers hurriedly ticked away at the screen of her phone, penning a message to none other than "Nessa ❤" as her phone proclaimed. She clicked send, and the little message bubble raised into the text message dialog with a quiet "bwoop".
Hey babe~ are you busy?
Gina smiled bashfully. It felt so casual. "Babe". But it also felt right.
Both of the girls were busy-- Hell, with Gina going to school full-time and volunteering, and with Nessa being a working woman-- but somehow they still made time to meet-up periodically, at least once a week.
A response popped up, and Gina unlocked her phone to read it. Hurriedly, a response was typed back.
Can I come hangout at your place~?
They were still at that early stage of dating where Gina felt the need to ask these sorts of things. She hadn't spent a night at Nessa's place, hadn't met Nessa's roommate (who was also allegedly her brother, too?), and hadn't commandeered a bathroom shelf or fridge space. She still felt like a guest, and that necessitated an all-clear before visitng. It was only fair. It'd be a while before she ascended to "just let yourself in" status.
Pop. The gargoyle looked at her phone again. A smile. Carefully she got to her feet and, with one fluid motion, leapt off the high roof and spread her wings.
...
The flight was short. Only a few miles, and probably no more than twenty minutes. (Of course she could have flown faster, but she didn't want to seem too over-eager.) Gina wove her way to Vanessa's apartment, landing (once again) on the roof. Front doors were for nerds. Down the stairs, the gargoyle descended, until she found herself at the door to Nessa's apartment. Her hair had been wrangled into a bun for flying, sunglasses fastened to her head by an adjustable strap. Gina also wore a high-waisted pair of shorts, a halter tee, and a large flannel shirt over the whole ensemble. Her satchel was slung across her chest.
The entire look was very collegiate, right down to the harried expression of someone who just realized this semester would be a lot (a lot, a lot) of work. The gargoyle knocked lightly at the door, hearing no noise within, and then tucked her hands behind her back, walking on her feet. Her skin was cold from the flight over, but her face still stretched in a broad grin. Already the warmth of the inside was working its way into her bones.
Gina heard footsteps in and straightened to attention, her eyes lighting.

The gargoyle was putty in the older woman's hands. Led by a hand caressing her chin, she found herself guided into a kiss. She leaned into it, a smile curling at her lips. Sure, she'd kissed plenty of people, but it'd been a while since she'd felt that spark. One hand steadied the gargoyle, but the other lightly touched Vanessa's neck. This was exactly what she wanted.
Gina didn't want to stop kissing. Most of the beachgoers' were watching the fireworks show anyways, who could be bothered by two girls making-out. They couldn't very well be "that couple". Nessa broke the kiss, much to the gargoyle's chagrin. But that didn't quell the smirk upon her lips. Their foreheads were pressed together, breath mingling, hearts hammering. Gina didn't move the hand on the side of Vanessa's neck, so she could now feel her friend's leaping pulse. At least she wasn't the only one who felt like this.
>> "Can we do this again? Like, a lot? A-as girlfriends?"
Gina's breathed a laugh, not at Nessa's expense, but in disbelief. They kissed. She'd asked Gina out. It felt so surreal. Was she even awake right now. The gargoyle pinched her own arm, and the corresponding twinge confirmed that, yes, she was awake. Every fiber of her body was urging her to say yes-- just say yes-- any excuse to kiss her more because God knew Gina really, really wanted to kiss Nessa again. Right now, in fact. But her rational brain tugged at the reins of her heart.
Nessa was a dear friend, but also Becca's ex. That had to break some sort of friend-code. Then again, Becca was the one that cheated... And she really liked Nessa's company, and let's say they didn't work out... that'd be one new friend, lost. Her mind was racing. The pause felt pregnant but in reality maybe a few seconds had passed.
"Yes," the gargoyle finally breathed, "I mean, yes, please. I wanna give it a shot."
Another breathless laugh. She kissed Nessa's cheek.
Gina listened as Nessa spoke, her breath catching. Special? Made her happy??? How couldn't that take her breath away. The gargoyle felt the flush creeping into her neck and in her cheeks. For once, she wasn't smiling, but only because her mind was slowly processing the words her friend had uttered. Gina was special. She made Nessa happy. Her head felt like it was full of static. Signal lost. 404, brain not found. Kaput. The sun was almost entirely set. It had dipped beneath the horizon. As such, the gargoyle used her free hand to remove her glasses, and tuck them behind her horns. The first fireworks went-off over head.
>> "Fireworks."
"Yeah," the gargoyle acknowledged, lifting her chesnut gaze. It was still a little too bright, but not enough that it'd give her any problems. Absently she grabbed for her shorts-- maybe it'd be warmer if she had more fabric on? The gargoyle fussed with the worn jeans, averting her gaze again to find the front. She didn't want to get up.
A pastel ticket poked its way out of the shallow pocket.
Redeemable for any one thing...
Gina rolled her lips and turned her attention skyward again, her hand toying with the edge of the pocket.
Silence stretched between them and time charged past, the sky deepening to reveal the brilliant colors of the fireworks. Gina was quiet, noticeably so, spare her occasional outburst of appreciation for a particularly beautiful firework. Her hand never strayed from the shorts or, more specifically, the ticket.
In a lull between the noise, the gargoyle found her courage--
"Hey, Nessa?" her voice had an edge to it. Gina gathered the ticket into her hand, and held it out to the other girl, "I... I think I know what I want... for the ticket..."
Maybe it was dumb... it was probably dumb. She shouldn't ask for dumb things! She should take it back while she could. Ah, crap, no, she'd already said she'd wanted to redeem the ticket and backpedaling wasn't an option now.
"I-I-I mean, it'd really make the moment if we- that isn't to say that-" the gargoyle sputtered, her face flushing under the attention that she was now receiving. She was allowed to request anything she wanted! That was the deal! No take-backs!
"W-what if we-" the gargoyle trailed, "-kissed?"
Her gaze fixed on Nessa for a moment, the pop of fireworks filling the space between them. That's what she wanted. A kiss. It was kind-of a selfish thing to ask for, especially if Nessa hadn't meant that Gina was "special" like that. But... that's what she wanted... a kiss. Shyly, the gargoyle glanced away. It was a very selfish thing to ask for.
Gina breathed an “mhmm” at Nessa’s inquiry, smiling apologetically. Transitioning from night to day was always rough, since the drop in temperature usually meant that the stonelike young woman, too, grew colder. It was no worse than someone with poor circulation, but still-- she probably felt like an icicle snuggled up against Nessa.
>> ”I didn’t bring a jacket, so all I can offer is my body… For heat. I can offer body heat.”
The apologetic expression on the gargoyle’s face melted away-- she couldn’t help it, a laugh escaped her, an honest and open thing. Wordlessly, Gina seconded the sentiment-- she could offer her body. Though not for heat.
“Sorry,” the gargoyle said, quieting herself. She sounded like she meant it but also didn’t. Unless Vanessa meant it in an innocent way, in which case, Gina needed to crawl out of the gutter and back onto the sidewalk with the rest of the people. It shouldn't have been that funny.
>> ”Gina.”
“Hm?” the gargoyle replied, absently inclining her head to make more room for Vanessa to nestle. Her heart stuttered. It was the pregnant kind of utterance, that usually preceded something big.
>> ”I’ve really liked spending so much time with you lately. I liked it a lot. Like… I am not sure I remember being this happy in a long time.”
Be cool, be cool. Maybe it wasn’t. Like-like. Maybe it was just… having fun? Be cool, Gina. BE COOL. A warm smile stretched across her face in spite of herself. She rested her cheek against the crown of Nessa’s head.
“That makes me… so happy to hear,” the gargoyle confessed, “I’ve really liked it, too.”

Sam’s summary of goings-on was insightful, however brief. For example, Gina didn’t know he did police-work. The rest… girlfriend aside… came as no surprise. The gargoyle laughed, offering no comment on how “surprising” it was that ladies found him appealing. He wasn’t an ugly dude, so at least in physical aspects Gina could see how he’d be physically attractive (despite how annoying he was at the present moment).
“A nurse, huh? That’s something,” Gina agreed. As Sam took his chance at nabbing a beer, Gina’s tail jolted just out of reach, her expression wry. It was like when her big brothers played keep away with her.
“I’ve taken a few self-defense classes at the college,” Gina confirmed, “Nothing noteworthy or too advanced, though.”
