The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Lee could understand what he meant. This Tarin was starting over completely. Not just a new city but a new world, and he probably had very little with him. As he had said earlier, it wasn't like the rift had closed on a known schedule.
And here Lee had all but offered him the shop. A way to make money, doing something that would be far less difficult than finding random, general jobs, which came with a place he could live until he got himself more settled and could find an apartment.
Before she was able to say anything, Lee reached the front of the line. "Extra large black please," Lee ordered before turning to Tarin. "You getting anything?"
After waiting for his reply, Lee paid then stepped to the side before looking at Tarin again. "But you'd be a fool to not take it," Lee replied. "No, I understand that."

He was right, Lee didn't have to think about what she was going to do with the shop now. What she was going to do with Tarin's apartment, his stuff.
She didn't have to think about it now. But time wasn't going to change the fact that she was going to have to think about all of this. The only way that time would change that would be if Tarin came back alive and well.
And with their luck, Lee honestly doubted the chances of that.
Plus, even if she contacted the lawyer the moment the office opened in the morning to get things started, the smallest issues were still going to take days to sort out.
"I don't," Lee agreed as she came to a stop in the short line at the coffee vendor in the park. "But I will have to deal with it, and putting things off isn't going to make any of it easier."

After she'd asked about his shop on the other side of the rift and turned to make her way toward the park, Lee thought that this other Tarin wasn't going to answer her, that he was going to just continue on his own way. Because he didn't seem to be following her. The energy she was feeling from him wasn't moving.
Well, whether the man followed her, whether he answered her question, it didn't really matter. Lee had a lot of stuff she was going to need to figure out and still needed that coffee.
Though she was consciously paying attention to his energy in particular, it had just about blended into the background and faded away from distance before Lee felt that Tarin moving. Catching up with her.
Lee nodded, not at all surprised when he came up beside her and spoke. "So much better than random jobs," Lee agreed, not looking over at the man walking beside her. And that's probably what he would be looking at for work if he didn't set up a shop on this side.
"Not having to break the lease would be one less headache to deal with in all of this," Lee continued. A lease she had arranged a decade earlier to last a good many more years.

That was why this Tarin had come by the shop that night, he had been starting to try and figure things out.
That made sense, in a way. There were obviously differences between his world and this one. Some differences were major, like how this man looked completely different than Tarin, despite having the same name and powers. Other differences, Lee had heard, were very small.
The only way he would have found out what, if any, differences there were about the shop would have been to come here.
And he was planning to go to one of the places that had been set up to help those who'd gotten stuck here.
"That's a good start," Lee said, moving her eyes back to look at Tarin from where she'd been looking back at the shop.
But he wasn't the only one who had things to figure out, Lee realized. If Tarin was gone, there was the shop and his apartment to deal with, his bank and investments, his stuff…
"I need a coffee," Lee decided. "Your shop, you did the same thing? A medium shop?" Lee asked before starting to walk again towards the park and a vendor she knew was open late.

Things were different here. Lee couldn't help but think that that was an understatement, at least with her limited knowledge and experience with people and the way things were on the other side.
It was also a very noncommittal answer.
He went on to make a comment about…some sports team being bad on this side as well. Lee knew that the Mets were a New York team, but they didn't play hockey and that's about as far as Lee's sports knowledge went.
Followed by a very familiar phrase. 'I'll figure things out', meaning he really had nothing figured out in terms of a job or place to live. At least that was always how she had used the phrase.
"So you haven't found anything yet," Lee said, but as she spoke, her eyes moved back to look at the shop. Which if Tarin really was gone would just sit empty.

He was here because the shop was in the same place. This Tarin had had a shop in the same place on the other side of the rift.
Lee nodded. That made sense. But more than that, with what Lee knew about how Tarin had first found the shop all those years ago,
It somehow felt right that both shops were in the same place.
But this Tarin was still trying to figure things out. Because of course he was. He may have been from New York, and had had a shop in the exact same place, but he was also starting completely over. Because this wasn't his world.
Well, if the rift didn't open again, this was his world now. But it hadn't been. His shop, his place to live, they didn't exist here.
Lee glanced over at the shop again before looking back at him. "What have you figured out so far?"

Sorry that it was happening. That made a hell of a lot more sense. Because how, why would this Tarin have had any reason to do anything to him?
"Thanks," Lee said, giving the man a small smile.
And Tarin said that he would let her know if he heard - or saw - anything. Lee pressed her lips together and nodded a little grimly. Depending on what had happened, what Rupert had done with the body if he had ended up finally pulling the trigger, Lee knew that that might be the only way she ever found out. Because unlike when Tarin had been out of his body, Lee knew she wouldn't sense him now; she had only ever been able to feel energy from a spirit when it had been merged with him.
Death, whether her own or Tarin's, had always been a possibility. Lee knew that. She'd known it from the first day that Tarin had told her about merging and she had decided that she wasn't going to do to him what so many people had done to her because of her powers. It had come close. So many times. She had died in Romania.
Yet now, knowing that Tarin might be dead, and she may never know for sure…
"I will be," Lee told him when he asked if she was okay. "I'll manage." Like she always did. She'd push as much of everything she could down and lock it away, because unless Tarin miraculously showed up in the morning, she was going to have to explain this all to Kevin. And to Josh and Adele. Though she had no idea how she was going to do that.
She'd just stick with the rift story. Until and unless she had proof of anything else.
The rift, which had closed days ago. But this Tarin had only been near the shop tonight. "How did you know where his shop was?" she asked, a crease forming between her brows.

The other Tarin uncertainly apologized, and Lee just looked at him for a moment.
That moment lasted a few more when he asked if there was anything that he could do to help.
In reality, they were complete strangers. He'd really just stopped on the street because she had been very loudly and publicly yelling through a locked door for her ex-husband. Really, the fact that he had already asked the spirits in the shop if they'd seen Tarin was more than she could have expected.
"Unless you dragged him across and made sure he got stuck there, you've got nothing to apologize for," Lee told him.
"God…" she groaned a moment later running her hands through her hair and taking a breath. "That's probably best case scenario, isn't it? That he got stuck over there."
Taking another deep breath, Lee let her hands fall to her sides as she looked back at this Tarin. "Keep an ear out?" she asked quietly. "If there's any news, or if he…appears one day?"
It was morbid, it was worst case scenario. But Lee knew that it was a possibility. Between Rupert, Tarin's powers, and the trouble that always seemed to somehow be attracted to the shop (or had it just been them?), it was a definite possibility.
"I didn’t catch your name….”
Right. Because she had been freaking out a bit when she'd found out what his name was. "Lee Smith," she said. "Sorry about that."

The man in front of her looked completely shocked at the idea that she had a child. Well, more than likely the fact that Tarin, the Tarin from this world, had a kid.
Which at this point seemed like an obvious to Lee. But things had changed A LOT since Lee had first met Tarin Brooks. For both of them. Twelve years earlier, neither herself or Tarin would have been able to see themselves in the kind of relationship that they had quickly found themselves in. Lee had thought that the possibility of marriage would never happen, and the simple idea of being pregnant had terrified her. And though they had never explicitly talked about it, at that point marriage and a child probably seemed like worst case scenarios to Tarin.
"That….That does sound less likely.”
"Hence why I was banging on the door to the shop," Lee replied. "And his apartment before that."
Sighing in frustration, Lee glanced back toward the shop before pulling out her phone. No calls that she had somehow missed. She then shot a quick text off to Matt. "Damn it," she muttered as she tucked her phone away again. "This is not good."

Yes, Lee knew that people had been crossing the rift to 'sight see' over the previous year. But that really didn't sound like Tarin. Not just before he had specifically made plans to have Kevin for Independence Day. Especially not with what he'd told her that he'd learned from spirits that had died over there.
"I know that it wasn't a known that it was closing," Lee said, shaking her head as she looked toward the park. "But I don't know why he'd even want to go there. Not with what we'd heard."
This other Tarin went on to ask if her ex-husband could have had plans that had taken him out of town.
Turning back to him, Lee shook her head. "If something took him out of town, it's nothing good," Lee said. She couldn't think of anything that would have taken Tarin out of town in the last few days without informing her that he would have done willingly.
"And he wouldn't have planned to leave," Lee continued. "Not after him wanting to have our son for the holiday and making the plans to pick him up this afternoon."

This other Tarin did not look all that happy about the idea of using his powers out in the open, or at all. But he didn't say anything else. Didn't refuse, didn't argue or question anything else. He didn't agree, either.
He simply closed his eyes and stood there silently. "I've seen the eye thing before," Lee muttered, crossing her arms impatiently. Not because he was taking too long to find out the information, but because of her frustration and growing worry about Tarin.
Finally, though in reality it was probably less than a minute, he opened his eyes and told her that the spirits hadn't seen Tarin in days.
He hadn't been to the shop, whether working or not, in days…
"Shit, shit, shit,” Lee muttered to herself, turning slightly as she ran her hand through her hair. "This is beyond bad. I swear…If that hypocrite has done something to him…”
Then Lee's eyes shot back to the man standing for a moment before she turned to look in the direction of Central Park. "He couldn't have," she said quietly. "Why would he? There's no reason…"

The man in front of her, this Tarin Brooks looked almost shocked when she requested he all the spirits about the train who worked in the shop.
And seemed quite surprised that she was asking him to do it in the middle of the street. Where else was she expecting him to do it? If Lee had been able to get into the shop, she wouldn't have stood outside knocking on the door for nearly as long as she had.
"Well yeah," Lee replied. "I don't have anywhere else you can do it and still be close enough to connect them."
Plus, with all of the blatant power displays that Tarin had put on over the years, even only the ones that Lee knew about, she would have been surprised if she of it hadn't spoiled out of the shop and onto the street
"It's not like I'm asking you to make them solid," Lee continued after a moment. "Just all songs questions.."

The man said that the first part, that he was in fact, Tarin Brooks was ready to prove. And he reached his hand into his pocket.
It was a testament to what Lee was worried about that she didn't even consider the man might be reaching for a weapon in his pocket. Any weapons that would work Lee in this situation would be too large to fit in a pocket like that.
It was, in fact, not a weapon but his wallet. Which he opened a moment later and held out toward her showing his ID.
It was not an ID that looked at all familiar. As she leaned in slightly to look at it, Lee saw that it did say New York, and also had a picture that looked like the man in front of her. It was difficult in the relative darkness of the street, but it looked like it said 'Tarin Brooks' on it as well.
Either this man was Tarin Brooks from the other side of the now vanished rift, or he had gotten a useless ID with her ex-husband's name on it for some reason.
He had also realized that she had been talking with Tarin's brother on the phone.
As for whether he was merged…that was a very good point that he couldn't actually prove it one way or another. Not when Lee didn't know the man standing in front of her.
She also wasn't feeling any extra energy that shouldn't be there coming from him.
At this point, Lee kind of had to believe what he had said, didn't she?
"Well, there should be another Tarin Brooks here," Lee replied, some of the anger and frustration at her ex-husband coming out again like it had when she'd been at the door of the shop.
Then Lee had an idea, something that would now be possible in her search for Tarin that she wasn't able to do on her own. "Since you're here, can you ask them,” she said, tipping her head in the direction of the closed shop. "Where my Tarin went?” And no, Lee did not just call him her Tarin, she had been talking about from her world.

The man claiming to be Tarin Brooks stood there rubbing the back of his neck as she shook his head. Trying to figure out what to say.
It felt eerily familiar.
Not the Tarin that she knew, but he was Tarin? Lee was still quite confused. She had seen people, spoken with people from the other side of the rift before. But they had all looked like versions of themselves. There were differences obviously, but you could tell they were different versions of the same person.
This man did not look like Lee's ex-husband. Even if he did look familiar in a way that Lee couldn't place.
"Alright, let's say that you are Tarin Brooks from the other side," Lee said, her voice still hesitant. "You don't look like him. How do I know that you're safe? That you're not merged?"

Lee stopped and turned to look at the man and he stopped as well.
Then just stood looking at her for what felt like an uncomfortable amount of time before explaining how he knew that she was in contact with Tarin's family.
At least, he started by simply saying he hadn't known Tarin was in contact with his brothers. Lee's immediate thought was that this man obviously didn't know Tarin if he didn't know that. She had gotten him and Josh talking again a decade earlier.
Then again, Rupert probably had no clue. And wouldn't care.
When the man continued speaking, Lee's eyes widened and she took a step back as she focused on her siphoning, increasing how much energy she was pulling in. "No you're not," Lee said. Was she feeling more energy than she should be from the man in front of her?
If this was a merge, it was very strange. The body was different, so not a spirit. But why try pretending to be Tarin? The full merges had always created a new being with its own mind. No need or reason to pretend. Yet if somehow Tarin had managed to gain control, he'd obviously know that he was in contact with his family.
