The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Lee had just managed to get the light switched on when she felt pressure against her hand. She moved it from Tarin’s shoulder quickly as he shot upright in the bed.
And his arms wrapped around her.
Lee closed her eyes and bit her lip as she pulled Tarin close to her, a hand rubbing up and down his back. “I know,” she whispered gently, her other hand holding his head to her shoulder as she heard and felt him crying. “Shh…shhh…You’re alright, Tarin…I’m not going anywhere…We’re both safe here…”
Lee continued to hold Tarin close, though not as tightly as he was clinging to her. And though the way his fingers were digging into her back hurt because of the bruises, she didn’t move as she tried to calm him down. She just sat there, her hand rubbing his back as she continued to murmur over and over.

Romcom, infomercial, romcom, romcom, infomercial…
What Lee wouldn’t give for some cheesy sci-fi movie right now. But apparently there were none of those tonight. All that appeared to be on tv tonight were romantic comedies, infomercials, and even worse reality tv reruns.
Letting her head fall back against the couch behind her, Lee sighed. The infomercials were starting to look good. That was not a good thing.
Suddenly, Lee heard a scream. She was on her feet before the scream had even finished, rushing toward her bedroom door faster than the average person would be capable of.
Door open, Lee moved across the dark room, currently lit by only the red lights from her alarm clock and coffee maker on the bedside table. She didn’t need to turn on the light, she’d been in this room for 7 years and hadn’t really changed the layout.
Stopping at the side of the bed, she reached her hand out to shake his shoulder. “Wake up Tarin,” Lee said, shaking his shoulder a little harder. “You’re fine. It’s a dream…”
It was then that she realized her potential mistake in not turning the light on. Lee knew her room, yes. Didn’t need to see to move around in it. But that familiarity did not extend to being able to see flailing limbs. “Crap,” she muttered to herself.
Turning her siphoning back on so that she would hopefully be able to feel an arm swinging toward her, Lee continued shaking Tarin’s shoulder as her other hand groped in the dark for the lamp on her table.

It had been a quiet afternoon after Lee and Tarin had left the Empire State Building. They both had quite a bit to think about after speaking to the spirit up there. Which surprised Lee; she had expected Tarin to have some things to think about, but Lee hadn’t been expecting what the woman had said to her. She hadn’t known that he had gone to see the woman so much, that he had shared so much with her.
It may have been because of all the thinking that they had to do, but Lee had managed to get Tarin back to her apartment.
And somehow managed to keep him there and managed to keep him there until well after sunset. Even now as she sat on the couch, Lee wasn’t completely sure how she had convinced him to stay the night. Maybe it was the fact that he hadn’t gotten himself a new bed for the shop yet. Maybe it was because she had said she would go back to the shop with him then walk home by herself. Alone.
Either way, it was the middle of the night and Tarin was asleep. In her bed. While she was going to be up all night.
After everything that the spirit had said that day, thinking about it like that seemed a little awkward.
Rather than thinking about that any further, Lee reached forward and grabbed the remote. There had to be something she could watch to make her brain turn off for the night.

As Tarin started speaking, Lee bit her lip. Had she had something in her head like that? Maybe not to the same extent that Tarin did, but she had.
Slowly, her arms came uncrossed as Tarin continued speaking. And when she heard him say that he wasn’t going to do anything, she audibly sighed in relief. “Good,” she whispered. Then she smiled over at him. “But if you need me to beat any thoughts into submission, I can do that too.”
The conversation was getting heavy now, much heavier than Lee had thought it would be. But at least Tarin was looking at her now, not leaning against the fence that was put up after the woman had walked herself over the edge. “Maybe your life is not worth more than anyone else’s,” Lee said thoughtfully after a few moments. “But that doesn’t mean that your life is worth less than anyone else’s, either. Think of it another way; if someone drives drunk and gets into a crash, killing someone, does that mean that they should get out of the car and kill themself because they lost control? And don’t try to claim that’s different, because that person could easily go and do the same thing the next day, next week, next year. Still a potential danger, so should they put a stop to that risk?”
Lee stopped talking for a few moments to let what she’d said sink in. “And I do know. About those deeply buried beliefs,” Lee then continued, her voice soft. “Maybe not as deep and final as yours, but I do. I didn’t think it was possible for me to have any kind of real relationship. I’m talking about not even friendship. I didn’t think anyone would ever want to be around me long enough to actually become friends, because of the energy I would drain from them. Nevermind someone actually want to touch me.
“It can be hard, I admit, but you can get past them, and eventually stop thinking about them.”

Neither of them had answered her. Instead, Tarin had walked over to beside the spirit and was just standing looking out over the city. As the form of the woman grew fainter. Well, that was a blessing at least. She really hadn’t wanted to watch her step off the ledge again as easily as though she was walking down the sidewalk.
That had been what had freaked Lee out the first time she was up here.
And while Lee had seen and done a hell of a lot since that afternoon, she did not think it would have changed her reaction.
Which left just Tarin standing in front of her. Crossing her arms across her chest, Lee looked at him with a raised eyebrow, waiting for him to turn around. Except that he didn’t.
She was already walking up to him, arms still crossed, when she finally heard him. “If it’s serious enough for a spirit to tell you not to do it, I’m going to worry about it, Tarin,” she said as she came to a stop beside him, facing him.

That explained a fair bit, both about the spirit and the Tarin she had known. Even before she had met him, Lee thought he had come up here periodically, after that first night in the city.
“I can understand that,” Lee said softly. “About feeling, having a connection…” it wasn't, couldn't be to the same degree but Lee had spent so many of her early years avoiding physical contact that once she realized what she was missing, it was hard to think about. Even after the Camps, despite the conditioning she had received from the collar and her not wanting to touch people, it was hard. Now, after all these years and everything she had been through, to suddenly not have contact, to not feel people again… “Still, I appreciate it. And everything you’ve done for him over the years.”
But then Tarin was speaking, telling the spirit about the shopfront in his world. Lee couldn’t help the small smile from forming on her face. She’d known that the spirit was happy that the shop was open again here after having been closed for so many years.
At this point it was quiet between the three of them, and Lee could see the spirit looking closely at Tarin, examining him. When the spirit spoke, Lee knew exactly what she was saying. The men who shared a name and a power were so very similar, Lee could read Tarin’s facial expressions and body language almost as well as a decade ago when she and this world’s Tarin had been married. Even though they had really only known each other about a day, due to the time Tarin had spent unconscious. And yet, there were so many differences between the two men that it was shocking with how similar they seemed.
But when the spirit that last thing, Lee straightened up, eyes darting between her and the spirit. ”Wait, what do you mean by that?” Lee asked, confused and concerned. But the spirit had already turned away and was looking over the city again. The last time that Lee had seen her, it hadn’t been long from that point before the woman was walking off the edge of the building.
So Lee turned to Tarin, both to avoid seeing that again and to try and get an answer. “What did she mean? What do you think it is that you’re ‘supposed’ to do?”

Lee was surprised at just how solid the spirit in front of her now looked. She had never seen a spirit look this solid, this alive before, and Lee cast a glance over at Tarin in surprise at that.
Her eyes didn’t stay there long, though, as the spirit started speaking.
She had known that her ex-husband had disappeared? Lee shook her head that no, he wasn't here anymore, but didn’t bother correcting the spirit on that, what was the point in arguing with a woman who had been dead for over a hundred years? Especially since Lee knew that emotions and feelings went through the link, too; love had never been the problem, it was everything else.
And he’d been coming to see her a lot before he went missing? Lee hadn’t thought about that before, but in a lot of ways it made quite a bit of sense.
Tarin was now asking the woman if she had seen him, seen him on her side. Her answer was quick and…She’d gone looking for him? Because of the last time…Though he had explained to her what he had done when he’d been out of his body, that month his body had laid in what they thought was a coma in the mansion infirmary, Lee had forgotten that he had come here, asking this woman for help to get back in.
“Thank you for that,” she said softly, giving the spirit woman a tight smile. That was so much more than she could have hoped for, that the spirit had gone off on her own to do that. Maybe she had been wrong thinking that it had been a stretch to think that this woman was actually friendly; that sounded like something a friend would do.
That wasn’t all that the woman had to say and as she continued, Lee felt tears welling up in her eyes. For him to speak about Kevin that much, after they had left for Toronto, made sense. But he’d talked about her that much as well? Lee blinked furiously to try and get rid of the tears in her eyes, so they wouldn’t spill over.
“He also couldn’t just leave, this was the only place he had ever felt like he could do good. It was a source of immense personal conflict.”
Lee nodded hearing this. Then laughed slightly, a few tears still in her eyes. “He would have felt that way, wouldn’t he?” she asked, giving the woman another tight lipped smile. “Thank you for telling me. And thank you for being there for him all those years.”

As they moved into the area where she had seen the spirit appear in the past, Lee saw Tarin scanning the area, looking around. Then his eyes stopped on an area that to her appeared to be empty. He must have found her.
That thought was confirmed a couple moments later as he spoke, slowly walking toward the empty place on the observation deck. Lee followed a couple steps back. It was up to Tarin at this point; she’d led him to the spirit, but he was the one who could communicate with her, he was the one who would have to give her energy if Lee was going to be able to see her.
Slowly, Lee saw the air in front of them…there really wasn’t a way that she could explain how it was happening at that moment other than the air was solidifying. Even though it had been years since she’d been here like this and the fact that her image was fuzzy, Lee recognized her. And a moment later, Tarin turned his head to look at her, asking if this was the spirit she’d been talking about, his eyes a cloudy white rather than his normal green.
“This is her,” Lee confirmed with a nod before turning to look at the spirit. “It’s nice to see you again. It’s been a rough weekend, and I thought it would be good to introduce him to a friendly face.” Maybe friendly was a little bit of a stretch with how melancholy she was, but she was far better than any other spirit she had even heard about. And she had helped the Tarin she had known on a number of occasions, maybe she’d be able to do that again. “And I thought it’d be good to let you know that the shop has continued to be used and open.”
“I have seen that,” the spirit said before her eyes turned back to Tarin. “I’ve seen him there.”

“Easy?” Lee asked, then shook her head although she still had a small smile on her face. “Probably not. Good thing I’m around, isn’t it?” Was she being over confident in her ability to get him to relax? Maybe. Did he need to? Yes.
Then Tarin said that maybe he would prove her wrong about his emotional intelligence. Almost immediately after he had said that his wasn’t that great. She just raised her eyebrow a little higher but didn’t say anything. If proving her wrong in this came with him relaxing and not worrying so much about the possibility of standing out, Lee really hoped that he would.
“Did your friend frequent anywhere up here in particular? Did she have a name?”
“I’m not sure about where she frequents, but anytime he’d make her visible, he’d do it over here,” Lee said, then stepped away from the wall, leading Tarin further away from the crowd and into a sort of corner on the observation deck. But Tarin was now asking if this spirit had a name. “Oh, um,” she said over her shoulder as she walked. “If I was actually told her name, I’ve forgotten. I first met her more than 15 years ago and I haven’t actually seen her very many times.”

This sounded familiar. She had done that. Trying to blend in, trying to not be noticed. But at the same time, attempting not to completely hide away or make the attempts at blending in too obvious because, as had been pointed out to her years ago, that was also suspicious.
“Oh Tarin…” She sighed, her eyes slipping closed as realization washed over her. “Is that what all this is about?:
She paused and took a deep breath as she looked up at Tarin again. “Then stop trying to balance. Just be yourself. SUPER here isn’t like when you were growing up and the Registration Act was repealed years ago. You don’t have to try so hard to hide constantly.”
If that’s what had been bothering Tarin so much, if he had been stressing and worrying about being discovered, it was no wonder that he wasn’t falling apart the way that she had been expecting.
“And it’s not a contest. Just an unfortunate fact…”
He laughed! He actually laughed. Lee could only hope that like in the past, even though it hadn’t been with him, the starting of joking around and laughing meant that they were at a turning point. But she tilted her head as she looked at him, raising one eyebrow. “Oh yeah? Then prove me wrong.” She couldn’t help but laughing a bit herself as she finished speaking.

Lee frowned deeper when she heard Tarin’s answer. “And why aren’t they?” Lee questioned, the frown still on her face. “How are you supposed to have any kind of connection with anyone if no one ever notices you? Though, if anyone other than me had noticed anything earlier, it was just that you were having a panic attack. They happen sometimes, not the end of the world, and not something you need to try to hide from strangers.”
He was back to looking over the city now, and Lee turned her head to glance out at the skyline. It really was a beautiful sight. But at least he was saying that he’d tell her ‘that’ story sometime. That…was actually a lot better than things had been going so far that day. Lee thought that this might be the first time he’d willingly thought he would be around her in the future, even if the future was simply later that day.
“How many of us actually have nice stories?” Lee asked, a slightly sad smile on her face. “And I’d be honoured if you shared that with me. I know secrets like that are hard.
“But,” she continued, her voice taking on a joking tone as she smirked at him. “You’re a man. Doesn’t that in itself tell me about your emotional intelligence?”

Though Lee was now standing beside Tarin, she kept looking over at him. And could see him tense up again. She wasn’t sure if the panic was coming back, she couldn’t see his eyes now, but she could tell that something was happening in his head. Something far greater than the tight confines of the elevator.
“True,” she agreed with him, her voice low and slow. Hopefully calming. “But we’ve still got hours before they do that. And it is a great view. Though I still have trouble looking at it from the edge over there.”
Taking a deep breath, Lee looked over at Tarin again as she tried to puzzle out what it was exactly that was bothering him. Because while he was breaking down a bit here and there, it didn’t seem to be in the same way, for the same reason. But if it wasn’t that, what was causing these reactions? If she didn’t know the cause, it would just be harder for her to help him through this.
“What are you worrying about?” She finally asked him as she turned to face Tarin, her shoulder leaning against the wall for just a moment as she realized that was a bad idea and straightened up.. “Because I know worry when I see it, and right now it’s oozing out of you. And I know this time it isn’t because of the elevator.”

He was not fine, she could still see that, and Lee raised a questioning eyebrow at him. But then he started to explain, and as more words came out of his mouth, the deeper Lee’s frown got.
“What do you mean you think you’ve got everything under control?” Lee asked, confused. “All things considered, you have amazed me today with how well you’ve been holding yourself and your emotions together.” She tilted her head at his point as she looked up at him. “Why do you think I’ve been insisting on sticking around? Because it’s not to play tour guide.
“And you don’t need to be sorry, Tarin. Everything is going well. We just had a little hiccup there, that’s all.”
At this point, Lee moved over, leaning on the wall beside Tarin and just stood there in silence for a minute. “We can stay up here as long as you want to. Or need to. And if it is hard going down, I’ll be there again.”

Lee just stood there, turning toward him more fully, holding Tarin’s hand as she looked up at him, breathing slowly and calmly herself to try and get him to imitate it, follow her breathing pattern.
“It’s ok, Tarin. You’re fine,” she murmured, her thumb rubbing back and forth on the back of his hand slowly without her realizing it. “Just breathe.”
She continued this as they climbed higher in the building, though Lee couldn’t have told you where they were at any point, her eyes were locked on Tarin’s the entire time as she continued speaking quietly to him.
Slowly, she saw him calming. He wasn’t calm, not by a long shot, but she could see the panic in his eyes fading, becoming more controlled. Not gone, but at least controlled, and his breathing was growing more regular, too.
Finally, after what must have felt like forever to Tarin, Lee felt him pull his hand away from hers and turn away. But she kept her eyes on him, wanting to make sure he was alright. Eventually, the elevator stopped and the doors opened. And as quickly as he could without pushing people out of the way, Lee saw Tarin leaving the elevator. Lee followed, only slightly slower.
Followed him over to an emptier area of the observation deck where he leaned against a wall. Stopping in front of him, Lee watched his face. “Are you alright?” she asked gently. “What happened in there? Are you claustrophobic?”

He had no problem asking around to find out if there was any information about what had happened to the Tarin of this world, her ex. “Thank you,” she said sincerely, giving him a smile.
Tarin didn’t say anything else, but he didn’t have to. His face said it all, telling her that he thought she was being ridiculous and vastly underestimating herself. Lee didn’t say anything, she simply shook her head as they made their way into the elevator.
As the elevator filled up, Lee stood there patiently. Only as the doors to the elevator were closing did she look over toward Tarin. Her eyebrows shot up immediately in surprise and concern. He looked-
At that moment he turned to her and she saw the panic in his eyes as she felt his hand grab hers. “Hey, hey, hey,” she whispered as she squeezed his hand, looking straight into his eyes. She didn’t know what had suddenly caused the panic she was now witnessing, but mere days after a merge, she didn’t think it could end well if the panic continued or got worse. “Just focus on me, ok Tarin? I’m not going anywhere.”
