The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Was it a bad thing, that he thought that about her? Well…no, not really. It was just …She had trouble believing that Tarin had never seen anything more beautiful than her ever before.
But Tarin was trying to explain, telling her that this view wouldn't look back. Because somehow that put her higher on the list.
Tarin seemed to be getting frustrated now, though, and Lee pulled one arm from around him and lifted her hand up to his cheek. The blush was still covering her cheeks but Lee smiled up at Tarin.
"It's not a bad thing," Lee whispered as she looked up at him. "Surprising, yes, that out of every single thing you've seen in your life, you think I'm the most beautiful. Because god…this view is gorgeous," Lee said with a glance over at the water before looking back at Tarin. "I especially wouldn't think that when I'm running or wearing your hat."
Then Lee used her hand on Tarin's cheek to help pull him down a bit as she leaned up to kiss him. "If I haven't said it tonight," she murmured against his lips. "I love you too."

"Yup."
Lee just blushed brighter as Tarin continued speaking. She knew that she was good looking and attractive; she would have had to be blind to have not noticed the looks over the years. She could even accept that Tarin thought she was 'painfully beautiful'.
But how could she have been the most beautiful thing he had ever seen?
By the time that he was finished, Lee's bottom lip had found its way between her teeth as she looked up at Tarin, still blushing deeply. "That you've ever seen?" Lee asked in a whisper. "You've really never seen anything more beautiful than me? In your entire life?"

Tarin had a good point about being able to look it up online. Well, they most likely could find it. Between Tarin's habit of going down rabbit holes and her being bored when she couldn't sleep, they were bound to be able to find something out.
Tarin continued speaking, saying that with one of those huge moons reflecting in the water with the buildings here at night, that it might be the second most beautiful thing he'd seen.
Ever.
Lee blushed even as her mind raced to argue that it couldn't possibly be what it sounded like. Tarin had grown up with the Texas sunrises and sunsets. He had spent countless hours in libraries, and some of those buildings themselves were gorgeous. He said he had gone to a bunch of museums and art galleries when he first got to this side of the rift.
There had to be multiple things on that list that were more beautiful.
But Lee was still blushing as she looked up at Tarin. "The second?"

Had she noticed that Tarin had a pretty good poker face? Lee definitely had not consciously noticed that Tarin had a good poker face. Possibly because she was actually able to read him so well. Even sometimes when others couldn't even tell that there was something going on with Tarin.
Though, Tarin was able to keep his face quite relaxed and neutral when they were fooling around and saying ridiculous things. "I'll have to remember that about you," she replied.
And more appropriate clothing? Yeah…That would probably be a good idea. Even though Lee had mentioned hearing heels again the next time that they came out here so Tarin would need to carry her again, Lee could at least pick something that wasn't 'dress code fancy' restaurant to wear.
"Oooh," Lee sighed. "That would be amazing." They couldn't really have stars to look at, not in the middle of New York City, but a giant moon reflecting with the buildings in the lake would be a nice consolation.
Then a crease formed between Lee's brows as she looked up at Tarin again. "How do people know if the moon is going to be big like that without simply just seeing that it is that night?"

Lee laughed again and shook her head slightly against Tarin's shoulder. "Is that so?" Lee asked. "Because you always seemed so certain about getting me to like them. I fought against it and pretended not to like them trying to not prove you right."
They then just stood there in silence for a little while and Lee closed her eyes as she stood enjoying the silence as she relaxed in Tarin's arms. It was so quiet and peaceful here that a part of Lee didn't want to leave at all. But she knew they would have to at some point, sooner rather than later. "Maybe next time we should bring a blanket," she mused instead. "That way we can sit and enjoy the view."

Lee couldn't help but laugh when she heard Tarin, easily the loudest sound of the last few minutes with how softly they had been speaking. "You do make some very good points there," she said after a moment.
Leaning back in again, Lee rested her head against Tarin's shoulder as they stood there. "I guess it's a good thing in some ways that we didn't really waste any time, isn't it?" Lee asked, still laughing slightly. "Though, I don't think it would matter how much time we could give it, I never would have realized that about the Mets without you."

If it were somehow possible to spare Tarin the worst parts of the early years of having his powers, what would Lee not do? What would she be willing to give up?
If it meant that things hadn't been so difficult for Tarin, if he would have been able to sleep without spirits invading his mind, if he had felt like he could stay at home, with his family, pay the age of 14…Lee would have willingly stayed herself. Because as horrible as being relegated to her room had been, how difficult trying to function with such little energy was…
All of that was so much easier to deal with than what Tarin had been through.
And Lee would gladly have put herself through years of that if it had meant Tarin hadn't had to suffer through his powers like he had.
But none of that was possible.
All that Lee was actually able to do was be there for Tarin when he needed it and do what she could to make the future, for both of them, better.
When Tarin spoke, Lee pulled back enough to look up at him, but kept her arms wrapped around him in a high. "I'm glad you're here now, too," Lee whispered as she looked up at him in the dark. It was certainly better than him being on that island. "Even if it did take us 6 years to get here."

"I know they did," Lee said gently. "And I know they loved you, I'm sure they still do. But that's not always enough to not feel alone."
When Tarin mentioned that they had given him sleeping pills because the spirit induced nightmares had kept him awake, Lee squeezed her eyes closed and hugged Tarin tighter. That must have been horrible. To have been trapped asleep for hours seeing the images from all the spirits around him that night…
With how hard it would have been for Tarin, how hard it would have been for his family to be able to help without actually believing what he said, with the threat of SUPER…Lee could understand why that would cause a 14 year old Tarin to think it made more sense to leave. Especially if there was a chance of getting help.
"I'm glad it has worked out. But what I wouldn't give if it meant you didn't have to go through all of that…"

When Tarin commented that he was enjoying the quiet just as much as the reflection, Lee nodded. "Me too," Lee murmured as she stepped closer to Tarin, leaning into him. It really was remarkable, and incredibly nice, with how peaceful this little spot in the middle of the city was.
And, it turned out, neither of them had given Rachel a time that they would be home. Oh well. She had their phone numbers if she needed them home.
Lee didn't give that much more thought as Tarin started talking about how he had not had quiet once his powers emerged. And while there was no way for her to know what it had been like for Tarin, she knew enough to have a very good idea of what he had been through. It was hard for her to believe that now there just were never any spirits near him if he didn't want them to be there.
"I wish you hadn't had to deal with all of that," Lee whispered as she wrapped her arms around Tarin. "Especially not on your own."

As Tarin explained what he had meant about being now knowing what she saw some nights when she was out running and she smiled. Lee didn't think she had ever really thought about anything in that way before, but it was a nice thought. Especially as it was something he wouldn't have ever really seen without this walk that night; he didn't go running at night, and if Lee did, it was almost guaranteed that he needed to sleep.
"If I remember the next time I see a mist or fog around here, I'll get some pictures," she told him. "I won't be as good as in person, but better than nothing?"
The reflection of the buildings in the water really was amazing. "If you had wanted to go that far, I was going to show you the reflections in the Reservoir," Lee said, her smile wider as she looked up at Tarin. "But I didn't know we'd see this here. But the Reservoir isn't nearly this quiet. This is better."
Did they give Rachel a time that they would be home? Lee thought for a moment. She didn't remember hearing Tarin tell her a time. "I didn't know exactly what was going on tonight," Lee reminded Tarin. "So I didn't. Did you?"

It really did sound cozy the more that Lee thought about it: being curled up on the couch with Tarin, and blankets, and a hot drink. But there was no need to rush toward winter as, just without the blankets, that was often how they spent weekend mornings.
"IF the time comes," Lee stressed with a smile. ""Remember, determination."
Tarin was thanking her for showing him these places she'd discovered, but his last comment caused her to look up at him in slight confusion. "You're welcome," Lee replied with a smile despite her confusion. "But if you were curious about that…you know you could have asked or something, right?"

Lee laughed. She knew Tarin knew that she could be determined. He'd said at one point that it was a Smith family trait. But Tarin had played along with her playful tone.
And her accepting what sounded like a challenge was now a promise? To make sure that Tarin started warm all winter?
No pressure.
"You get to choose?" Lee questioned, the playful tone still in her voice. "Want to know a good way? Hot chocolate and blankets. Very cozy on a cold day."

It was quiet enough that when she told Tarin she might want him around for a very long time, she was able to hear the happy little sigh that Tarin let out. It was such a sweet, cute, happy sound that Lee couldn't help but smile wider as she looked up at him.
His soft little 'good' was pretty incredible, too. It didn't matter how much Lee thought Tarin felt the same way, hearing him say it…Well, it was both reassuring and made her feel all warm and fuzzy.
But it seemed that of all the things about her that Tarin could have doubted, it was her Canadian-ness, and knowledge of how to stay warm in the winter.
"You know, that sounds a little like a challenge," Lee mused playfully. "I'm not sure if you noticed this or not, but I can be a little determined when I decide to do something. I can also be a little competitive.
"So, this might be the warmest winter of your life, Tarin."

Tarin leaned down to meet her for the kiss, which made it much easier. But when he spoke, Lee's smile turned into a happy grin. "You know, that could end up being a very long time," she told him as she gazed up into his eyes.
A very long time, because Lee currently couldn't imagine that she ever wouldn't want Tarin around.
But then Tarin took a turn to grin randomly, and Lee was about to ask him when he explained to her what he was thinking.
There were spots along the paths that if you caught them at the right time after the right snowfall that looked absolutely magical. Lee could only imagine what this spot would look like.
"I'll use my Canadian snow knowledge to help you bundle up for it," Lee said playfully. "And then we can go home and warm each other up."

Lee shook her head as Will asked if Kevin's powers would end up keeping him up. "It doesn't look, at least at the moment, that his powers should affect his sleep at all," Lee said. "That doesn't mean hadn't stayed awake to play around with his powers, but that's a completely different story."
Will admitted that he figured he had needed the talk from her. Even if he would never have realized it on his own, Lee suspected that he was probably right. And he even realized that the worst case scenario of working on his powers was that he'd be able to defend himself better with them. Best case so much better than that.
"In some ways, I wish I had had someone talk to me like this," Lee admitted to the younger man. "In so many ways, I learned more about my powers while defending or protecting myself than at any other time. And it would have been so much less stressful and dangerous if I had been able to learn at least some of it beforehand. Though, it doesn't seem like trouble finds you nearly as easily, which is a very good thing."
