The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Tarin thought he'd do some research, and the slight relief Lee felt when he specified that it would just be at the library, at least a small part of her had worried about him doing something more active than just reading books.
Lee nodded her understanding. He'd told her about spending hours in the library when he was younger going down rabbit holes. And while she had planned to do some research herself, starting with the books that had one been for sale in the shop, Tarin was probably much more skilled at it from his experience.
"If you want a hand, let me know," Lee still offered. Maybe an extra pair of eyes would catch something Tarin didn't, out maybe she'd make a connection he hadn't.
But he wanted to look at the spirit again? He said he wouldn't look up with it again, but Lee still wasn't sure she liked that idea. "Can I be there if you do?" she asked. Not that she really wanted to be… "Just to be on the safe side."
As Lee explained why she thought Michael had come to Tarin, and why she wasn't nearly as surprised about that fact as Tarin was, he didn't seem to fully believe it. "Well, if Michael was happy with what you said, it must have helped," Lee told Tarin. "At least a bit."

Lee nodded. She didn't generally care too much about the welfare of spirits, but she was glad that they knew to stay away from this mystic. It had to be bad enough to be stuck here as a spirit, dead but unable to move, often even when provided help to do so if she understood things properly. But to be stuck as a lobotomized spirit…
"So did I," Lee told Tarin. "Things go bad often enough when just humans and mutants are involved. I didn't want to see, even second hand, what adding magic to the mix would do."
Once their hands were clasped, Lee looked down with a small smile. Which stayed on her face as Tarin spoke again. "Probably Haven," Lee added almost absently before looking up at Tarin. "And actually, in this case, I can. It wouldn't be a far jump for most people to make between an ancient Egyptian mystic coming back to life to ancient ghosts.
"And with everything that the three of us talked about that day," Lee continued, still giving Tarin that same small smile. "Michael's got to have a decent amount of trust there. And not just in me."

Quin was not taken off guard because Lee hadn't made sure that she was ready. That was good. Real fights wouldn't wait until you said you were ready. A lot of the ones that Lee had been in tried to get the jump on you without you knowing there was going to be a fight until after it started.
But Lee also was not expecting the younger woman to pull the move that she had.
It wasn't as though Lee had many options here; Lee currently has only one foot on the floor, and Quin had grabbed it.
Completely off balance, Lee felt herself falling backwards. Even as she hit the floor, Lee was starting to scramble back before Quin could get a lock on her leg. Bending her free leg, Lee brought her foot up to use Quin's shoulder as a springboard, pushing to put space between them as Lee pulled her other leg away from Quin's arms.
Scrambling backward, now using both her hands and feet, Lee put enough space between herself and Quin so that the younger woman wouldn't be able to easily reach her before quickly climbing to her feet.

As if it wasn't hard enough to describe your own powers, which you knew, to someone else who had never experienced anything of the sort, right now Tarin was trying to explain something to Lee that neither of them actually understood. And so not only was his explanation not clear, but Lee was misunderstanding what Tarin said in a different way.
Definitely not helpful with trying to figure out what was going on.
"Never," Lee told Tarin. "If they could, I'm sure that would have helped during the breakouts." Definitely not help the death count, but it could have helped make a merge not necessary.
"No, I know it was the woman who did something. Those were just the only things along that line I could think of. And I really don't know much of anything about this whole mystical magic thing."
When Tarin apologized, Lee shook her head and reached her hand out for his again. "No need. We both agreed that trying to learn more was the best idea in this situation. Somehow we'll figure out what we need to. It just might not be today."

Lee nodded when Tarin said he had donated what books had been left when he took over the shop. Not that there had likely been many; Lee doubted that any of those items had been ordered even a single time since she last did it. Thirteen years earlier. Plus, she had already read all of those books, it was simply a starting place if they had been around.
Tarin then went on to answer her question about whether the spirit had been moving on its own. Which, it had in a way, but had also been kind of dragged along.
"Of course it doesn't make sense," Lee said quietly, still in thought. "We haven't figured it out yet. Even when we do, it still might not make sense."
Lee bit her lip as she continued to think while sitting there, absently reaching out for her bottle of water. "The only actually possible ways I know of someone being in two places at the same time," Lee said after a minute, her words coming out slower than normal as she thought. "Would be a mutant who can copy themselves, which this spirit obviously isn't, and astral projection. Which again, not a mutant. But what if it's something like that that was forced onto it? Though without actually having a physical body to be separated from, it kinda split like you sensed?"
Lee took a deep breath and shook her head, still holding her unopened water. "I know, that doesn't really make sense either, but it's all I've got."

Lee had tried to be tactful. She very intentionally had said nothing negative about the X-Men. Some of her oldest friends were X-Men.
Lee's problem was with how the group as a whole worked. The way they planned, or rather didn't plan that Lee had major issues with.
But sometimes not saying something told a person just as much as giving full disclosure.
And either Will had picked up on some of that, or he had already had thoughts about the X-Men.
"There's definitely paperwork to be a student," Lee said. She had just gone through all of that for Kevin.
But had she had to do anything when she stayed at the mansion? Or had Sam just taken care of all of that for her? Lee honestly wasn't sure. So much of that month she had spent in an exhausted daze that it was hard to remember details.
"At the very least, I would expect that there'd be some sort of paperwork to get a passcode so you don't have to buzz security every time you want through the front gate."
Though actually, Lee thought as she said that. With how often she was likely to end up visiting Kevin, it might be a good idea for her to speak with Sam or Shin about getting one of those herself. If nothing else, it would stop the people on security from getting annoyed with her.

"I can't guarantee anything about how long you'll sleep, but I can get the ibuprofen for you," Lee said, giving Tarin another quick kiss. "Be right back, hon."
Getting up and making her way to the back of the shop, it didn't take long for Lee to grab the bottle of pills and a couple bottles of water from the fridge. But the entire time she was thinking about what Tarin had said about the spirit.
It had been like the spirit was in two places at once, which made the images unclear no matter how Tarin had tried to get them into focus. But he didn't know where the other 'piece' was. The more that Tarin had tried to force everything together, the more it had hurt. And Tarin had said he didn't think the spirit had been able to do anything.
Though it moved. It had come to the shop. But spirits didn't have real, physical bodies, not anymore. Physics didn't work on them the same way; they could move through walls, so why would friction be an issue? Did they even normally touch the ground, or do they just kinda…float?
Lee was working her bottom lip in thought by the time she made it back to the front of the shop.
"Were there any books around here when you took over the shop?" Lee asked as she set the medicine and water on the table. "I mean those ridiculous new age-y spirituality books."
Sitting down again, Lee sat just staring across the shop for a moment before turning back to Tarin. "You said it couldn't do anything. Was it moving on its own?"

He didn't know if the spirit was in multiple pieces, but it was in multiple places at once. A deep crease formed between Lee's brows as she tried to make sense of what Tarin had told her.
Lee frowned when Tarin said that it hurt.
"Have you ever come across that before?" Lee asked. She knew that headaches were common because of the mental strain sometimes, but this sounded like a lot more.
"It's possible it might get better?" Lee said uncertainly. Though if that spirit had come back after she had drained so much energy from it that it had disappeared rather than leave…
"Did you need anything?" Lee asked, smiling as she watched Tarin kiss the back of her hand. "Painkiller? Water? Ice pack?"
Lee gave Tarin a small smile, then leaned forward to give him a soft kiss. "Anytime. Because even when things are…not great, it's easier together."

Tarin didn't answer right away. Normally that might have worried Lee, but she knew that Tarin wasn't still linked with the spirit. His eyes had gone back to being green before he laid his head on the table. And with the effort he had been using, and the current sounds of his breathing, Lee thought it was quite possible he couldn't answer yet.
Eventually, Tarin straightened up. And while he still didn't look great, he started explaining. Not that he had much in terms of answers, but it was something, right?
And that something was scary.
The spirit had been split by this ancient Egyptian mystic? As in, split into pieces?
"I'm glad you did too," Lee said, shaking her head. She didn't even want to think about what might have happened otherwise.
"You mean, like that spirit wasn't in one piece?" Lee questioned. "I know you've never seen it, but how is that even possible?"
Lee squeezed Tarin's hand slightly. She may have been holding it still just as much to comfort herself as him. "It's not like there's much that can permanently, or even long-term, affect a spirit. Even when you think you've destroyed it…."

Tarin didn't answer when she told him to stop. He blinked finally, but still didn't answer when she asked if he was able to break the link with the spirit.
And he also wasn't breaking the link.
Lee upped her siphoning a bit as she scooted to the edge of her chair. Letting go with one hand, Lee raised it to Tarin's face, fingers on his jaw to gently turn his face to hers. "Break the link or I will," Lee told Tarin as she debated the fastest, most effective way to do that. Probably a combination of their ideas; Tarin had said to hit him, but if he didn't have energy or couldn't go through the link, couldn't maintain it.
Lee dramatically increased her siphoning as her hand moved away from Tarin's face. She hated the idea of doing this, but she'd promised to stop this if he couldn't break the link himself.
Her hand was already moving, closing the distance to slap Tarin (she couldn't punch him. Not when it was him) when the white faded from his eyes and she could see the green in them again.
Lee was just barely able to stop herself from connecting the slap, and a moment later she cut her spinning back to practically nothing.
"Oh thank god," Lee whispered as she slouched back in her chair. "What happened?"

"Here we go…”
Lee kept her eyes on Tarin's face as he looked toward where this spirit must be standing. Her hands clasped his one hand feeling his energy, trying to sense any change in what she was siphoning.
If things went anywhere close to well or good, Lee knew that she wouldn't see or feel any real change in Tarin.
That thought was quickly thrown out the window as she saw a frown on Tarin's face.
And not long after that, he gasped and squeezed her hand. "Tarin?" Lee asked softly. This was not going smoothly. But that didn't mean he was in trouble. It could just be harder than he was expecting. Or that what he was seeing was worse, though Lee wasn't sure how something could be worse than all the images of death and dying Tarin would have seen through his life. Lee didn't want to know what would be worse.
But nothing seemed to be different about the energy she was feeling from Tarin. She was still siphoning the same amount. It was steady. And Lee didn't feel any increase in energy in front of her, or a dramatic decrease.
Then Lee saw something flicker out of the corner of her eye. Turning, Lee saw a spirit standing there. Kind of visible. And not in the normal 'kind of visible' spirit way where you saw it but could also see through it. It was blurry, even when it was there. But then the next moment it was gone.
That…was not normal. Tarin would either be giving the spirit enough energy to be visible, or he wouldn't. It wouldn't be flickering like this if it was within Tarin's control.
Lee was turning her eyes back to Tarin, to ask if he was alright, when she saw him looking unsteady in his chair. "Tarin, stop," she said, her voice louder than it had been previously. Firm. "Can you break it?"

Tarin said that she didn't need to be sorry, and she just nodded. And that he didn't want to know. Lee could certainly understand that. She didn't particularly want to know that either.
At least she wasn't able to see any of them unless Tarin intentionally made them visible.
Tarin was surprised that she'd offer to be here with him when he practiced allowing the spirits closer. "I know," Lee told him, her voice soft but sure. "But it's also not exactly going to be fun for you, either, and if I can make it even a tiny bit better or easier for you, I'd like to..."
Lee's words drifted off as she saw Tarin looking toward the back of the shop. Tarin continued looking for a few moments before he spoke. And again this time Lee couldn't see who he was talking to, so Lee just looked at Tarin as she held his hand.
It was always weird, hearing only one side of a conversation like this, with the other 'person' not even existing as far as every one of Lee's senses were currently concerned. But she was as familiar and used to the situation, well, as much as it was likely possible to be.
When Tarin looked at her, Lee nodded. "I'm ready," said, placing her free hand on the back of the one she was already holding. Lee then started to focus on her siphoning, hoping to be able to feel anything wrong as quickly as possible.

Lee nodded when Tarin immediately ruled out practicing this at home. "Of course," she told him. And it made perfect sense; Tarin had the ability for the apartment to be completely spirit free, not simply low spirit activity.
And god, Lee hadn't even thought of that when she suggested the park. "I'm sorry," she said, her eyes dropping to their hands for a moment before looking up at Tarin again. There had always been memories in the park before, flashbacks, but never any mention of seeing the womens' spirits. So that possibility hadn't even crossed Lee's mind.
But this wasn't something that Lee could say from experience wouldn't be an issue. It was quite possible that all of those women had become spirits.
"I didn't even think…I'm sorry," Lee said again in a whisper.
Then Tarin was saying he could just practice here, in the shop. Where there always were, and always had been, a lot of spirits. Not all of them content in their afterlife to just ask for help. Some of them willing and able to try and take what they had wanted.

"Maybe it's splitting hairs," Lee admitted with a shrug. "But there are times when semantics are very important." Such as when someone wanted you to promise to end the threat or just run away, and you promised to do everything you can to keep yourself safe.
"Or, you were just ready to hear it now," Lee suggested as to why Will had actually listened to her that night when he hadn't to other advice 'lectures' he had received in the past.
Lee could not help but laugh softly at Will's reaction to how Kevin had wanted to get his powers. "It's amazing what support and acceptance can do. We were in the middle of the park here when he got them, and he would probably say the worst part of the whole thing was thinking that he fried his phone and me hugging him."
If only that was the case for everyone. Though, how easy everything was with Kevin did have to do with what his powers were. They weren't inherently traumatizing like his father's had been, or treated like hers had been.
What was even more surprising than someone being excited about getting mutant abilities was that Will thought that she would be good talking to other younger mutants like she had with him. "The mansion is a good place for kids when they've first gotten their powers. It's a safe place to learn how to use them and they still get their schooling.
"For adults…" Lee paused as she thought about how to phrase her feelings on this. "They would still help with figuring out power issues, but you're likely to get at least pressure, if not the outright expectation to join the X-Men. And…yeah."

Lee sat and listened as Tarin explained the difficulty that he was having because there was now so much going on in the shop that she was unable to see or hear.
"It would be a lot easier to not deal with it at all," Lee agreed as she gave Tarin's hand a squeeze.
"But don't worry about feeling self-conscious about that around me," Lee continued with a small smile, her tone turning more teasing as she continued. "I know that if you're looking at or talking to something I can't see that it's a spirit. Either that, or you're ignoring me."
Lee reached her other hand out to hold the one of Tarin's. "That might be a good idea, actually," Lee agreed with Tarin's thought about doing this more often, so he could get used to the noise. "Maybe you could start trying it at home or in the park?" Lee suggested. "They've always been…less crowded."
