The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"I didn't." Rowan quickly repeated, not wanting even the smallest bit of doubt to find him.
He sighed, continuing to sink back in his chair.
"Apparently the...uh...wounds looked like something Fluffy- er...my beastial form could do..."
Rowan huffed, embarrassed. "Sorry...Mr. Johnson got me in the habit of calling It 'Fluffy'."
The shifter tried to set his embarrassment aside, this was a serious conversation.
"The cops also said they found my DNA on one of the...bodies...and that they had my DNA because of an...incident at my previous school..."
Rowan picked at his hands, not the best coping mechanism but he was trying to keep himself calm.
"But cops are mean, so I think they were lying...like they were hoping to scare me into confessing something...and they did scare me...a lot...but I know I didn't do anything..."

Huh...playing hide and seek without a seeker...Rowan blinked slightly, trying to wrap his head around it. Well Kalos was different...in a good way! Maybe that was just her way of saying she was looking for some quiet time. Or maybe she was hiding from a responsibility. Who knew really.
Rowan glanced up at Kalos as she stuck her arms out the window, but quickly looked away. The boy huffed slightly.
"Well...uhm...sorry if I exposed your hiding spot..."
He glanced over his shoulder, seeing that Zorro was on his way back with the ball. Rowan winced slightly. Kalos was clearly nervous around the dog, but the boy really didn't want this conversation to end so...soon.
Rowan quickly turned back towards Kalos, muttering: "Oh...hold on Kalos..." He then turned back to Zorro and said, in the most authoritative voice a young boy could muster.
"Zorro! Stay! Wait!" The dog, although excited, got the message loud and clear, waiting about fifteen feet away from the pair.
The shifter then began to make his way to Zorro. He slipped slightly on the icy ground, waving his arms out to the side to regain his balance. He was suddenly finding it a lot harder to not slip knowing that someone was watching him.
Making it to Zorro, who's excited body language clearly wanted the boy to move faster, Rowan gave the tennis ball another overhand chuck across the school's yard, hoping the distance would keep Zorro busy for a bit.
With Zorro again occupied Rowan began to slide his way back to Kalos, brow knitted together in concentration. Soon he was back at a conversation appropriate distance, all without falling on his butt.
Rowan let out a quick exhale, the closest the grouchy boy would allow himself to a laugh.
"Zorro and I aren't really...training. He's playing." Rowan scratched nervously at the back of his head, still struggling to make eye contact with Kalos.
"I feel like I...owe him a favor. And dogs like chasing tennis balls."

>> "Let's see... why don't you tell me the bad news first? Get it over with?"
Rowan exhaled quickly, a sound that was almost a laugh. He struggled to get comfortable for a moment, fidgeting with his hands.
"Uhm...most of it's bad news...I guess the worst of it's...that..."
Well...this was much harder to...phrase than he had thought. He was actually going to have to say out loud what had happened.
"There had been some...attacks in the area..." Rowan started not entirely comfortable saying 'murders'. Attacks seemed far less...dire. "And...some people got...hurt...and the police thought I did it..."
Rowan kept his gaze on the floor. He was scared to look up at his counselor, worried that her expression would be one of disappointment.

Rowan gave the smallest of smiles and a little wave as he poked his head into the office. He thought a moment, pondering the choice Gemma gave him. While being inside her aura kept his mutation quiet, and it was easier to concentrate, leaving at the end of their sessions often left Rowan overwhelmed.
"Maybe I can start outside? And if I get stressed I can step in?"
That seemed a fair enough decision. Rowan doubted he could get through his recounting of events without his mutation acting up, but he wouldn't know if he didn't try. The young shifter found a chair on the far end of the room, the one he tended to pick on days he wanted to be outside her aura, and sat down.
"I...don't really know where to start...with this...uhm..."
Rowan's voice trailed off, the boy scratching nervously at the back of his head.
"Well...no one got hurt...and uh...that's good..."

Rowan stood outside Mrs. Taylor-Cervantes' office, trying to work up the courage to knock. This wasn't Rowan's first visit to the guidance counselor, in fact the young shifter had found himself there several times during his first months in school. In fact Rowan was starting to find an odd...comfort in that office. These visits were mostly to take exams and quizzes without fear that his nerves would cause him to shift. As well as the handful of times Rowan got in trouble for threatening students.
But this time was different.
It has been a few weeks since Rowan's run in with the police, or the polices run in with him. The interrogation in Ms. Sundance's office, the stress of being accused of murder, and the near shift that came with it. All of this had taken a pretty bad toll on Rowan. He was back to struggling in class, avoiding his friends, and barely sleeping.
Rowan was falling back on bad habits, but he didn't want to. That's why he was here. He actually had to...talk about what happened. Gross.
Gemma was expecting Rowan, he had made an appointment and everything, but it still felt polite to knock. With a soft sigh, and pushing aside his desire to run and hide, Rowan knocked softly on the office door.
"H-Hi Mrs. Taylor-Cervantes...I'm here for my appointment."

The two continued to talk about more...mundane subjects for awhile. Mostly about Rowan, things he enjoyed eating, activities he liked participating in, things like that. The young shifter was thankful for the change in subject, not sure how much longer he would have been able to talk about his mutation.
Eventually the conversation, and this first meeting, came to an end.
Rowan excused himself, thanked Ms. Taylor for the hot chocolate, and gathered himself to leave her office.
His first time leaving the range of an adapted aura was...startling.
The moment he passed that threshold every negative emotion that came with his mutation crashed over him. The tension in his shoulders, the anxiety gripping his chest, his bestial side thrashing around in his brain; confused and frustrated. It was like someone slammed a cymbal above his head.
Rowan had to pause a moment, stumbling slightly from the sudden rush of his mutation returning to him. He swiped his tongue around his mouth...yep, teeth were sharp again. Rowan blinked, trying to recompose himself. With a shaky breath, clutching his school schedule to his chest, he walked back to his dorm.

Gemma responded to Rowan's theories, the boy taking the last few sips of his coco and setting the empty cup down on a table. Rowan huffed. Great. Now he had to go to counseling and Danger Room sessions, that's what he got for opening up about his feelings.
He make a slight grimace at Sam's name. It wasn't like he didn't...respect the teacher. He was...fine but he always smelled like coffee. Rowan just really didn't want to go back to the Danger Room. He was sore enough, and emotionally drained enough, from just the one session.
Gemma then struck a sore spot with Rowan.
This place wasn't a home. It was never gonna feel like a home. It was a school, just like any other school that had gotten stuck with him. He was sure in a month he'd do something bad and be shipped away somewhere worse. That's how it went. There was hardly even a reason to unpack his things.
Rowan sat in this grumpy feelings for a moment. And since he was a troubled teenager he assumed Ms. Taylor wouldn't understand. He didn't return the smile, still crossing his arms over his chest.

Not...born from cruelty?
Rowan sat silently chewing on this thought. He had never thought about it like that, and he wasn't sure that he liked thinking about it. Sure, maybe his more monstrous form was just trying to protect him but, as Ms Taylor said, it was going about this 'protection' in a horribly aggressive way. If it really wanted to protect him why does it not just run away? Or curl into a ball?
Attacking back with far more violence than received...is that really protection?
The young shifter was still silent, but struggling to keep the troubled look off his face. He continued to pick at his hands, a nervous habit. Rowan swallowed, heavy, and tried to respond.
"I...I dunno...I guess it protects me...in a way. But...it feels more like...venting emotions or...vengeance? Against people who hurt me? I don't know..."
His eyes never left the floor, his posture still curled slightly.

Rowan had to admit, it was kinda funny hearing an adult say 'sucks'. The rest of what Ms. Taylor said was frustrating to Rowan. Knowing things about his powers really didn't feel like a 'win'. It was much easier when he thought his violent urges were due to mental health struggles. And he still wasn't convinced that 'training' was gonna help. Using his powers over and over, that would just make it 'normal' when it wasn't.
>> Would you... like to tell me a little more about your powers?
This made Rowan tense up, brow furrowing.
"You and the rest of this school already know about my powers! What good is talking about them?"
He snapped, his tone aggressive. He almost immediately regretted responding in such a hostile way, blushing slightly in shame and annoyance. Rowan kept his gaze on the ground. After a moment he tried again, his voice far softer.
"I...uh...shift?" Mutant terminology was still strange to him. "I shift into an awful, mean, wolf...thing. And it makes me violent and angry."
He sighed slightly.
"I've shifted three times. And once was the other day during my Danger Room session. I only shift when...I'm really scared...I guess..."

Rowan sat, comfortable in the calming silence the two had created. Just silently petting Zorro. Rowan could feel himself completely shifting back. His head hurt a little, and his teeth ached a lot, but he wasn't at risk for losing control anymore. Fluffy wasn't pleased, still giving some mental thrashes, but seemed to accept he wasn't mauling any cops today.
And, for the first time in many years, Rowan thought that maybe he wasn't such a bad kid after all. He had been able to keep himself calm, mostly, while being interrogated for a pretty serious crime. He had avoided shifting despite his fear and anger, a feat he hadn't been able to do before coming to school...that was something he could brag about at his next Danger Room session with Mr Johnson. And, better still, Zorro wasn't scared of him.
Maybe he wasn't a great kid, but he was a better kid than he had been.
As Ms Sundance spoke Rowan turned to look at her. Actually look at her, not at the floor not at his hands but at his teacher. He had been to a dozen schools, kicked out of every single one, and he had been to schools who said the same thing. We teach, house and protect you. Lies, for the most part. But Rowan found himself, for the first time, believing that. It would have been so easy for Rowan to be thrown to the sharks. But he wasn't.
This place...actually cared about him.
He felt his breath get stuck a moment. There were a hundred things he wanted to say, but he had his tough and prickly persona to maintain. He finally was able to speak, although his voice did crack a moment.
"I hope there are sugar cones for the ice cream, bowls are just no fun."

Proud? Ms. Sundance was...proud of him? He tried not to let the word affect him, stubbornly blinking away the sting in his eyes.
"I didn't...hold back because I was afraid of hurting them...I just knew if I did then they would have gotten their answer. Even though I swear I didn't do anything that would have been enough to...get me in trouble."
Rowan grumbled a moment.
"That...wasn't fair...none of that was fair...I hate them, they made me feel...unsafe here."
He knew that continuing to talk about the situation without relaxing would just make things worse.
Rowan did, however, perk up at the mention of ice cream. He was food motivated to a fault. Something about ice cream sounded extra satisfying, as his anxiety had made him feel pretty warm.
Just sitting quietly, focusing on his breathing and taking in his surroundings, was already working to calm Rowan down. Over the next few minutes Rowan was starting to look him himself again, less beast and more boy. Now he was just feeling tired, and sore, the strain of keeping Fluffy contained.
As much as he didn't want to admit it Rowan could see a Danger Room session in his near future. Fluffy was pretty wound up, and he doubted ice cream and some quiet time would fix that. It was gonna be hard to sleep when he was so close to a shift. Even now Fluffy was pretty convinced they could catch up to the cops and teach them a lesson. How fun it would be to run them off the road and pull them out through the windshield.
Rowan struggled to breath a moment, trying to ignore the violent thoughts.
"Thank you...for protecting me Ms Sundance...I don't know...I don't know if I would have been able to hold back if you weren't here taking the brunt of the questioning...and...I'm sorry for leaving campus without telling anyone."
At this point Zorro was finally able to land a lick on Rowan's face. The boy snorted slightly and gave the dog a tiny smile.

He watched Zorro run after the ball with a slight smile on his face. The young boy sighed, content. Winter was long and cold, but the quiet that came with it was very peaceful. So when a nearby window suddenly slammed open Rowan nearly leapt out of his skin.
>> ”Watch out! There’s a DOG BEHIND YOU!”
It took Rowan a second to piece the nervous shout together. It was Kalos warning him! And he needed to watch out for a dog! The panic in her voice was so...genuine that, for a moment, Rowan was on board with this whole 'dangerous dog' scenario. Luckily he got over that fast, as Zorro had caught the ball and was on his way to return it.
The dog rushed across the snow eventually skidding to a stop in front of Rowan. And the tennis ball was dropped, along with a pool of drool, at Rowan's feet. Zorro got low to the ground, haunches in the air, tail wagging excitedly.
Rowan turned to face Kalos again, giving her a friendly wave as he did so. He raised his voice slightly so she could hear him.
"Thank you for the warning Kalos! But it's alright! I know this dog, he's a good dog!"
With a slight grimace Rowan picked up the ball. Not wanting to seem rude by shouting to his friend from across the yard Rowan started to walk towards the window. Zorro happily followed, his eyes firmly on the ball in Rowan's hands. It didn't take long to bridge the gap between the two, although Rowan almost slipped on the ice a few times, making their distance apart more conversation appropriate.
Rowan looked down at Zorro, who was still trying to get Rowan to throw the ball again. Remembering that Kalos was nervous around dogs, and probably didn't want canine coming any closer to her, Rowan turned away. He showed the ball to Zorro, getting his attention, and gave the ball a hearty chuck. Zorro got another round of fetch and Kalos got some space from the dog, win win!
With the dog occupied his attention was back on Kalos. Rowan shyly stuffed his hands in his pockets. He looked up at Kalos, and more specifically the room she was in. Class was done for the day, and she appeared to be in a kinda dim room...he couldn't immediately identify it. Maybe she had been taking a nap.
"Sorry for the scare Kalos. That's Ms. Sundance's dog Zorro."
He took a glance over his shoulder, the dog still chasing the ball. He turned back towards Kalos, a slight blush on his cheeks.

Rowan had retreated back into his shell. While he was by no means a social butterfly during his first few months at school he had at least attempted to be seen around the common areas. But now he was back to where he started in those first few weeks. Class, room, food, room, class. No socializing. The few times a friend spotted him in the hall, probably retreating to his room, he would feign illness. It was clear that his run in with the police had effected him quite badly.
But luckily the school had just what a young boy needed to mend his nervous heart. Man's best friend.
It has started off innocently enough. With Rowan asking Ms. Sundance if he could take Zorro for a walk around the campus grounds. The young shifter wanted the company but without the difficult social interactions. This started becoming a common thing for Rowan, the young boy taking the dog out a few times a week.
Today was special. Because today, when Rowan went to Ms. Sundance's office to request Zorro, he was given a tennis ball. Apparently Zorro was a big fan of fetch and the dog was just as excited as the boy to get outside.
It was cold, and the ground was icy, but this didn't seem to bother Rowan. He was able to find a nice spot around the side of the school, secluded enough so that he wouldn't hit anyone walking by but close enough to the school incase he needed Ms. Sundance. As Rowan walked he tossed the bright green ball from one hand to the other in a high arc. Zorro walked alongside him, tail wagging, occasionally giving a little jump at Rowan as if to say 'okay! I'm ready! Throw it!'
Eventually Rowan stopped, scuffing away the crunchy snow with his sneakers. The last thing he wanted to do was slip and smack his head. He gave the ball a couple practice tosses in the air, unable to hide his smile as Zorro followed the ball with his head.
"Okay Zorro! You ready?"
A silly question, of course Zorro was ready! He was born for this moment!
"Go get it!"
Rowan swung his arm forward, releasing the tennis ball at the apex of the arc. The neon ball soared through the air and Zorro wasted no time charging after it. The throw got some good distance, the ball eventually hitting the ground and bouncing once before Zorro caught it. The dog then looped around, heading back towards Rowan to show the boy his prize. Tail wagging, tongue flopping out of his mouth around the ball.
It took a moment for Zorro to release the ball, far too excited to listen to directions at first. Once the ball was dropped Rowan picked it up with his thumb and forefinger, not exactly loving the texture of icy, drooly, tennis ball.
"Wanna go again?
Another silly question. And once Zorro was sufficiently hyped for another round Rowan gave the ball another good chuck. This time, however, he lost his footing slightly. Slipping for a moment, but regaining his balance before he hit the snow. Hopefully no one saw that.

The moment the cops exited the office, the moment the door closed behind them, Rowan slowly slid down the wall, sinking to the floor. Rowan hugged his knees to his chest, arms wrapped around his head. The young shifter was shaking aggressively, his breathing ragged and heavy.
After a moment Rowan spoke, but his voice was strange. Deeper, gravelly, as if he had been screaming.
"P...please Ms. Sun-dance...I didn't...I didn't do it...p-please be...believe me..."
He let out a few more shaky breaths, clawed hands tangling into his hair.
"I'm...I'm t-trying s...so hard to be...be good..."
And that much was evident. For a student with an extensive history of starting fights and violent outbursts Rowan had been rather tame since attending the Sister School, aside from some verbal threats.
Rowan slowly looked up, pulling his head out of his arms.
"I just...want to go back...t-to class..."
He said, in absolutely no shape to go back to class. Aside from the near transformation, and Fluffy throwing a fit in his head, Rowan looked rough. His hair looked more coarse, his nails sharp and long, his eyes tinted red. And while Rowan's teeth were always sharp, they looked bigger, more cramped, in his mouth.
