The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The blush in Rowan's cheeks eventually faded as the two walked through the halls of the school. The brother comparison got a small smile out of Rowan. That was how it felt sometimes. Like he had to take responsibility for Fluffy's tantrums. Rowan was pulled from his thoughts as the pair stopped in front of another student. Bacon was exchanged for money and a...gem? Neat.
Then Carrick was talking, making reference to running into Mr. Johnson while making this delivery. The younger student blinked a moment. They hadn't seen the icemancer, and if they had Rowan felt like he would have remembered. Ragardless when Carrick turned to have Rowan confirm his story the younger shifted nodded. He might have been confused but he wasn't a snitch. The two continued on their way.
Rowan listened to Carrick attentively, nodding along to what he said. For a moment Rowan was thankful that Fluffy at least let him remember what he did. Rowan might always feel guilt after shifting, but at least he wasn't left completely in the dark. He gave the older student a sympathetic frown at all the fear mention. Their powers were alike in that sense.
An...agreement. Carrick and his other form came to...an agreement. Rowan's eyebrows raised slightly, the gears in his head turning. That was...not something he had thought about. He had never really tried talking to his other form. But maybe it was worth a shot. Carrick continued speaking, and Rowan went from inspired to confused. Any thoughts about potential control methods for his shifts were immediately filled by question marks. He...dated a teacher? And she got...older? Maybe Carrick's powers made him stay young? Rowan tipped his head like a confused dog, trying to make sense of what the older boy said.
The younger shifter, who had been nearly silent this entire walk, spoke up again when the conversation turned back to girls. Immediately he started blushing, turning his head away from Carrick. He stuttered and grumbled a moment before responding.
"She's not my girlfriend! She doesn't even like me! And even if she was my g-girlfriend I wouldn't tell you her name."
Rowan huffed and turned away, defensively.
"I...kinda introduced her to a dog the other day...it went..." Rowan paused, recalling the way Kalos froze and trembled in the presence of a happy, tennis ball fetching, dog. His heart sank. He sighed and continued.
"It went...okay...I guess..."
The boy was quiet for a moment, eventually opening up again.
"I don't think...I'd ever hurt her, if I shifted. My...other form only attacks what it see's as a threat and she's too...cute." Rowan nervously scratched at the back of his head. "I'm...more afraid of scaring her...that she might become scared of me."
Rowan kept his eyes on the floor, not wanting to see the other student's reaction as he vented.
"I...know I don't seem it now. But at my old schools I was mean. And violent. I started a lot of fights. I mean, at the time I didn't know I had a mean dog in my head making me aggressive. But I liked that people were scared of me, it made me feel strong." Rowan was quiet a moment. "It's...different now. I like being here. I want to make friends...I don't want to scare her, or anyone else here."
Rowan laughed nervously, still not looking at Carrick.
"Gosh that was...stupid. I shouldn't have ranted at you about my lame problems."

"It's not! I don't!" Rowan stammered, cheeks turning bright red. "She's not my girlfriend! She's just! A girl I know!" The boy frantically looked around. Luckily the two were alone in the kitchen, but who knew who could be listening out in the hall. Rowan snarled slightly, frustrated. This had been a terrible idea. He was just about to give up when bacon landed in his outstretched arms.
With a huff and a slight eye roll Rowan followed.
Carrick, unfortunately, wasn't comforting Rowan at all. From the talk of eating someone in front of the person he fancied to suggesting he not even tell her. Well...too late for that. Rowan deflated slightly, trying to keep up with the older student when all he wanted to do was ditch this meat and leave. At least he only kinda smelled like dog.
"Yeah...I get the whole waking up naked thing. Once was enough for me, never again."
And since his arms were full of frozen meat he gestured with his eyes to his oversized clothes.
"I can mostly remember what happens during my shifts. It's blurry though. Me and..." Rowan paused. He was not about to say Fluffy in front of this older, way cooler, student. "My other self...I think we see things differently. It's...hard to explain. He rarely let's me take the reigns though, when I do it's only for a few seconds when I can...concentrate."
Rowan was quiet a moment, his voice no longer stammering, but lacking any energy.
"It's...a little too late to not tell her." Rowan said with a sigh, completely abandoning the whole 'not talking about a girl' thing. "She knows and..." The boy gave a nervous laugh, although he was still frowning. "She's scared of dogs too. And I'm a little more than just a dog."

The younger shifter had winced reflectively as the arm swung out to stop him. And while he was relieved Carrick wasn't trying to hit him, Fluffy was still agitated. The boy's mind was briefly filled with thoughts of shifting. And if he shifted first he would get an upper hand in a fight. Rowan quickly shoved these urges down. Besides, Carrick sounded more confused than angry. And he had...called Ms Sundance by her first name? Maybe that was just something older students did here...Maybe.
Rowan watched the exchange between the two older students with wide eyes. Carrick wasn't just a bad boy, he was a cool bad boy. Rowan tried to hide the look of adoration in his eyes as he answered Carrick's questions, still muttering and stammering.
"Yeah...but every time I hold back the next shift is way worse..."
The pair had entered the kitchen, strangely enough, but Rowan wasn't going to object. He was about to ask if being 'darted in central park' was a figure of speech when suddenly there was frozen meat being tossed his direction. Rowan caught it with a soft grunt, noticing the label on it. Rowan smirked slightly, maybe this could be quiet payback for all the Danger Room sessions.
"I...I told her -- er...them..." Rowan quickly tried to correct, hoping the older shifter was too busy looting the freezer to catch the slip. "I just feel like...it made it worse. Like I would have been better off lying." He sighs. "But...you're right...they don't know."
The dog smell comment caused Rowan to frown.
"Do I...really smell like dog?" He asked, suddenly terribly self conscious. He showered every day...Mostly. The following comment pulled Rowan from his worried cycle. Huh. Maybe that was why Fluffy was so agitated. Maybe their two beasts could sense each other and wanted to fight it out.
"I've only shifted a handful of times." Rowan admitted. "I don't...like it. I don't like scaring people or hurting people. That's why I'm trying to figure out how to stop."

The sudden movement of snow startled Rowan, getting the attention of his bestial mutation. He could feel his pulse racing, his mind filling rapidly with warnings of attacks and the need to fight back.
Any and all thoughts of danger, or fighting, were immediately squashed by Rowan as he turned to face Kalos. The way the drifting particles of snow and ice caught the afternoon light...it was almost magical. The boy stood, eyes wide and blushing cheeks, knowing he was starring but unable to look away.
And she was laughing
Rowan felt the anxious knot in his chest immediately relax for the first time in days. Maybe he hadn't completely messed up.
The shifters guard lowered, the boy letting out a little laugh. He followed Kalos' lead, breaking apart the hard shell of ice with his feet and gathering up as much of the soft powdery snow as he could. With a soft grunt he tossed the snow up above their heads, the snow raining down on the pair.
Rowan, now also snow covered, smiled in Kalos' direction, a large clump of snow landing on his nose.

The younger shifter was still on high alert, trying to get a feel for Carrick. Rowan was normally a very guarded person, but he felt extra...jumpy and wasn't sure why. Maybe it was a shifter thing. Or a cat and dog thing.
Rowan nodded when Carrick asked of he had tried the internet, but didn't elaborate any further. Looking on the internet for dating advice was already pathetic enough. And there wasn't a Yahoo Answers for his specific problem. He tried not to scowl at the 'grow into it' comment. He wasn't...that small. He scrubbed the idea of matching shifter jackets from his mind, there were more important things to talk about.
As Carrick jumped down Rowan took a step back. Partially to give the older student more room to land, and partially because the smell of cigarettes had gotten stronger. Rowan wrinkled his nose a little bit, it was a rough moment to have a dog's sense of smell.
"Uhm...Mr. Johnson had mentioned you, and I think Ms. Sundance did as well."
Rowan frowned, knowing now he was pretty stuck in his 'school project' lie. Carrick began to walk and Rowan turned to follow, setting his pace to match the older shifter's
"And...uhm...I don't mean to sound nervous. I'm still pretty new to like...mutant stuff. It feels weird to talk about."
The boy took a deep breath, looking away.
"I guess...I was wondering if you had any...tips? Or advice? Recently I've been worried about shifting in front of..." He paused, blushing slightly. "...people I...uhm...care about."
Rowan huffed, sharp teeth showing.
"I don't have great control over my mutation...and...as cool as Mr. Johnson is it's hard to take his advice...I feel like he, and some of the other teachers, don't...get it, ya'know?"

Rowan shrugged slightly, still avoiding eye contact.
"I...I think it's just something I have to...get used to. People are gonna hate me, and be..." Rowan struggled a moment, eventually spitting out the words he hated so much. "Scared of me...because of what I am...the sooner I come to terms with it the better...I guess..."
Rowan quickly added.
"And...it's really not the school's fault...the police said it was routine questioning...I didn't know I was the suspect..." Rowan frowned. "I'm...not entirely sure who to call if I'm in trouble now if not the police..."
The boy was quiet a moment.
"How am I...feeling..." Rowan slowly repeated back. He didn't really like thinking about his emotions, no less speak of them out loud, but it was kinda Gemma's job to get him to talk.

Rowan had questions. Questions that a simple Google search couldn't answer. And it was hard having shifting related questions at a school with a small shifter population. And when the internet can't help, and teachers can't help, you turn to classmates. Rowan recalled a name he had been given several times when talking about shifters, Carrick.
He was going to find to find, meet, and talk to Carrick. And just thinking about such a thing got Rowan's heart rate spiking.
It didn't help that the two were a few years apart in age, and thus didn't share any classes. But it was hard to miss Carrick. He had a big wingspan, and personality to match. None of this was making approaching any easier on Rowan. If Carrick was the school bad boy, Rowan was more like the anti-social nerd being shoved into a locker.
Luckily Carrick wasn't too difficult to find. After asking a few students of the other shifters whereabouts Rowan finally got the answer he needed.
'Try the big tree out in the yard, that's usually where he goes when he skips class.'
He spotted the dangling legs and the occasional flick of a tail first. Well...he found the correct tree. With a sigh Rowan continued walking across the yard.
The boys strong senses quickly picked up a few things as he got closer. The pleasant strum of a guitar mixed with the...less than pleasant smell of cigarettes. It wasn't like Rowan didn't like the smell of smoke, he was quite used to it, it was just jarring against the fresh scent of the coming spring.
Rowan stopped near the base of the tree, looking up at the figure in the branches. The younger shifter nervously shoved his hands in his pockets.
"You're...uh...Carrick right? We...uhm, haven't met but I'm...Rowan...
The younger shifter was mentally face palming. Gosh he sounded like an idiot.
"I'm...trying to...learn more about controlling my mutation...but a lot of the library books are...uh...not about shifters..."
Rowan paused again, nervously scratching at the back of his head.
"And...I'm a shifter...and when I asked my teachers about other shifters your name get's mentioned...I was wondering if I could...ask you some questions? If you're not busy."
There were more...personal reasons why Rowan sought out Carrick specifically, but the younger shifter was nervous to bring them up. Maybe if he phrased his questions like he was writing a paper and not because he totally didn't have a crush on a girl Carrick wouldn't laugh at him.

Rowan tried not to make a face when Mr. Johnson mentioned fish. He wasn't a big fan of fish. Fish was slimy and...fishy. Rowan would have rather taken his chances with the dead, weird smelling, deer outside. Sadly it seemed Hiyori was a fan. Oh well...he'd survive.
The boys took the time to finish setting up their room, moving and re-moving beds like it was a puzzle game. Eventually everyone seemed to fit and be comfortable, with Xavier setting up right next to his bed.
The shifter spent his time, waiting for Hiyori and Ms. Sundance to return, sitting near the stove, trying to warm himself up. While he much rather would have preferred to hide in the boys room until forced to participate in something, it was much warmer closer to the stove. Plus, he wasn't sure how this trip was being graded, maybe socializing would give him some more points.
Before he knew it the door was opening. Rowan glanced up, not immediately recognizing this new form as Hiyori, until he spotted the cat ears on the top of her head. He noticed the large catch of fish she had with her, as well as the incredibly strong smell of fish that came with it. It was a rough time to have both a sensitive sense of smell and a general disliking of fish. The shifter boy's lip curled back, unable to contain his feeling of disgust, sharp teeth jutting out.
Soon the door was opening again, this time making Ms. Sundance's return. Rowan quickly tried to hide his sour face, not wanting the adult to think he was having a bad time. He gave her a little wave, but didn't really answer her question. There were plenty more...chatty students. He hadn't realized how dark it was getting outside.
Speaking of chattier students Xavier was quick to change into an...interesting cooking apron, and suggest the group start cooking soon. Rowan frowned, but kept quiet. His cooking skills were almost nonexistent, and he wasn't sure if he could handle being that close to a raw fish. Oh well, he'd probably get stuck doing dishes.

Rowan saw Kalos react to the snow under her feet and tried not to frown. She was clearly cold, or at least didn't like the sensation of the wet and icy ground, but Rowan felt stuck. He couldn't just...pick her up now that would be creepy and inappropriate. He was pulled from his gloomy thoughts as Kalos began to slip. Rowan quickly reached out to help steady her, letting his arm linger outstretched just a moment longer. Just...in case she needed something to hold onto.
The girl's nervous tone of voice caused Rowan to frown, just slightly. The boy looked away, noting Zorro's location. Rowan could feel his heart sinking. He was making everything awkward.
He had to...do something. Or say something. Or just...something.
"I...uhm...wouldn't suggest running...unless you're good at ice skating" Rowan punctuated this by sliding a little on the ice.
He gave another glance in Zorro's direction, nervously chewing on his lip.
"If you throw the ball Zorro might...get the wrong idea and think you want to play with him..." A small smile worked its way onto his face. "But...I won't stop you if you want to give it a try."
Rowan took a deep breath, putting his plan together.
"Let's...walk together. I'll keep Zorro away from you...and uhm...if you're worried about slipping you can grab my arm."
The shifter boy blushed again, hoping the cold masked it.

The shifter frowned slightly. He understood the desire to be alone, in fact he had been isolating himself for awhile now. It was the second part that troubled him.
"Trouble? Kalos, no offense, but I can't imagine you doing something bad enough that it warrants jumping out a window to hide."
"Dummy! You sound like a creep offering to carry her!" Rowan mentally scolded himself. He took a moment to compose himself, still looking away from the girl he caught.
"A-alright, just, lemme know if it's too cold..." He scratched nervously at the back of his head. "I...I wouldn't call it a punishment, or you selfish, I'm just...uhm...trying to lend a hand."
And he did just that, bashfully offering his arm to help Kalos stand up. It was pretty icy near the wall of the school and he really didn't want her to lose her footing as she stood up. Rowan felt her tense up again, prompting him to look over at Zorro. For a moment he wished the dog was a smaller, slower, breed.
"Zorro! Wait!"
Rowan sighed slightly, relieved that Zorro took his command and stopped, but still worried about stressing out Kalos.
"I...I am really sorry about Zorro, he's just excited.
Realizing he was still standing pretty close to Kalos he took a shy step away.
"And, uhm...we - er...I mean I don't have to walk you back inside...I'm just...worried about you being cold..."

"Hey, you don't have to apologize. You didn't really fall on me, I was trying to catch you and slipped, we can blame the ice, I'm not very graceful."
Rowan was trying, and failing, not to blush again. Now the immediate danger of Kalos having a dog based panic attack had passed he was again flustered. But he couldn't just dump the girl off his lap, she wasn't dressed for the cold, and seemed to be lacking shoes.
"You said someone was coming? So...were you actually playing like...intense hide and seek? Jumping from a window is a bit extreme not to get caught in a game."
He took a glance up at the window to the storage room. It wasn't too high up. He figured he could give her a boost, or maybe prop up on his hands and knees like a little step-ladder for her. Just as Rowan was about to explain his plan the window was closed, and locked. The boy frowned. Okay...new plan...
The shifter scratched at the back of his head.
"Alright...well. I could...uh...carry you, if you're comfortable with that. It's a bit too snowy to be walking around without shoes..."
Rowan blushes again, looking away.
"And...uhm...if you don't want to be carried...you could take my shoes? It's not...uhm...that cold and it's not too far to the front door...and if you're still hiding we could try to find an open window, or back door, to sneak through."

"Did the windowsill break or some-mmpth!"
Rowan was silenced by a hand over his mouth. Immediately the boy was pulled out of his daze. His face erupted into a blush as it really hit him that he was holding Kalos. Soon the hand was removed from his mouth, his eyes following Kalos' gaze upwards. Now that he was actually paying attention he could really hear someone moving around in the classroom. It sounded like they were carrying something heavy, and struggling a bit.
Maybe...Kalos had been playing hide and seek?
The shifter was about to ask for more context when he felt her start to shake. Startled Rowan turned his attention back to the girl in his arms. She looked paled and she was starring, wide eyed, at Zorro. Shoot! Shoot! The dog! Rowan was immediately snapped out of his blush and fluttery-feelings. He had to put some distance between Kalos and Zorro.
Rowan rotated the two around, which was easy to do on the icy ground, so that Kalos was closer to the wall of the school and Rowan himself completely separated the girl from the canine. There was absolutely no way Zorro would attack, but if he did he was going through Rowan. And with an awkward, over the shoulder, motion Rowan grabbed the tennis ball. He couldn't really throw it, not without jostling Kalos. So he instead just put as much force into a roll as possible, sending the tennis ball skidding across the frozen lawn like a bowling ball.
Zorro trotted after the ball, tail wagging, happy that the game had continued.
And with the dog situation temporarily solved Rowan could turn his attention back to Kalos. In the softest whisper he could muster said:

Rowan looked back down at his feet, bashfully.

He blushed slightly. "But if they did, I'd pick you to be on my team. In...uh hiding that is...we shouldn't fight bad guys."
Rowan was about to turn, ready to stop Zorro a safe distance away from Kalos, when there was a sudden flash of pink behind him. And Kalos was FALLING OUT THE WINDOW! What? Why? Had she been pushed or did she slip? For a split second Rowan was torn, stop the dog from approaching or catch Kalos. It wasn't a long fall, but the snow wasn't soft and fluffy this time of year. Kalos could bonk her head, or scrape herself on the ice.
The young shifter let's out a yelp, eyes widening.
"Gah! Kalos!"
He ran towards the falling girl, arms outstretched. Catching her wasn't the problem, the distance between the two students was pretty short, the ice was the problem. As Kalos landed in Rowan's arms the boy hugged her to his chest, as a way to disperse the force of her fall. This sudden change in center of gravity knocked Rowan off balance. And the boy, Kalos still in his arms, slipped, landing on his butt.
Rowan hit the ground with an "Oof!" the wind knocked out of him. After a moment Rowan groaned, still not entirely sure how Kalos had fallen from the window. "Are...you alright Kalos?" His voice sounded slightly slurred, the boy dazed from his slip. He could barely hear footsteps in the classroom, and...the lights were on now?
And Zorro, tennis ball in mouth, happily trotted over to the kids. Tail wagging.

There was a pretty heavy pause, Rowan returning his hands to his pants pockets, the boy not entirely sure what to tell Kalos. She was a...friend, sure. So he could trust her. But he was more afraid of scaring her. But at this point it would be hard to back pedal, and lying wouldn't be fair to her.
Rowan sighed, kicking a chunk of ice. He's just have to be vague.
"Some...mean people came to the school looking for me. And I was scared they would...take me away from here."
He paused, looking over his shoulder. Zorro had just about reached the tennis ball.
"And Zorro made me feel..." Rowan struggled a moment, looking for the right word. "Safe...I guess. Like I was a kid and not a monster."
Rowan finally was able to look up at Kalos, his lips barely curled in a smile.
