The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It wasn't an earthquake gently rattling the table, no. It was an upheaval. A chest upheaval, mind you, of the laughter sort. Aurum was snickering. Shin was making funny faces. The kid was obviously drunk. He wasn't making a lick of sense, either, and Kealey called him on it. What was he talking about, 'making his own costume'? And 'gold fish principles'? What? Kealey was the one making the costumes, and--
Whoa, hey, wait. Kealey was making costumes... For the X-men.
"Heh." Aurum bowed his head towards his drink. Unlike Shin, he hadn't finished his drink yet. And unlike Shin, he was still thinking straight.
Kealey made costumes for the X-men. Amusing. But it made sense. She was going to fashion school, after all. A job was a job. Still.
Kinda silly.
>> ”Now that is a good idea…I love my school…it’s not college…but it’s still school. What would you study?
"Yes, College. Go to it." Aurum cut in smugly. Shin needed all the nudging he could get. But nudge-time was over now. Now was the time for flat-out shoving power. A shoulder tackle towards higher education, if you will.
As for all that other stuff...
>>”I’m drunk.
It could... wait? Aurum stared at Kealey. God, she was cute. But inebriated. He looked towards the bartender, and mused 'maybe we should finish up the drinking and get this girl home...' It wouldn't do to have her stumbling when they were all staggered beyond belief.
Aurum looked at the rest of his drink, and eyeballed it with resolve. It seemed he had to play 'designated drinker' tonight... and they were the designated drunkards.
Oh, joy.
He opened his mouth to suggest it, but was cut off by Shin's announcement.
>>"Perhaps I should explain... I have to wear glasses because my eyes have odd effects on people. Just as the gloves protect things from my touch, the sunglasses protect people from my eyes."
Andrea said. The way she'd reacted made Aurum feel slightly guilty. She seemed so downcast. He hadn't meant to make her feel that way. He should have gone with his gut feeling, and left it at that.
Mutations on her hands, and her eyes... must be rough, Aurum decided.
She needed gloves, so he fished around for some under the sink. When he came back up, she was laughing. Not just laughing, chortling. Maybe with an ounce of 'guffaw'? His eyes passed over the toothy grin as she let her hand dropped, and made the laughter subside.
Aurum scratched the back of his head sheepishly, uncertain how to react. He settled for a nervous grin.
>>"I think I will stick to my gloves, I never know what will be affected by my power..."
Andrea smiled at him. She thanked him for the offer.
Smiling again. Good.
"No problem." Aurum replied, feeling a bit less disquieted. "And don't worry. I won't judge. Lots of people have harsh mutations... now... let's go find that tape..." Aurum slipped off to find the tape while Andrea finished her portion of the chopping.
Where was it, again? He searched in a closet, opened some drawers, then found it. He sauntered back into the room, cloth tape held high.
>>"Now, where were we?"
"Here, we are." He held the tape out for her with a mock bow. He glanced up jokingly. "What's the next step in the recipe?"
The bus was crowded today. As new people filtered on at the stop, Aurum looked towards the front of the bus. Sure enough, Kealey was making her way through the throng. He waved at her, and made sure the seat next to him was open.
Kealey slid in and smiled
>>”Hi.”
She announced.
"Hi," Aurum smiled right back.
He noted the slight unease, and looked around. Yeah. This would be the kind of jam-packed jumble of emotions she'd find jarring. Plenty of commotion. One seat ahead of them, a child impatiently tugged at his mother's shirt. Across the aisle, a man nervously checked his watch, and eyed the street signs.
Aurum returned his focus to Kealey, and she said what he was thinking.
>>”Just fair warning…there’s lots of people here…I might be a little flighty until we get off of here.”
She paused, then continued.
>>”Sorry…why don’t you talk? Is your sister having a big girly party for her birthday? Are you going?”
"Yeah," Aurum replied. "On both counts. We're having the party at some place she picked out, and she's inviting her friends. I'm probably just going to pop in for the delivery, then run." He chuckled to himself. Teenage girl parties weren't really his thing. "She'd probably want to spend most of the time with her friends, anyways." And he saw her enough, as is.
All-day bus passes were a wonderful thing. You could buy one, and then use it to ride all over the city for an entire day! It saved on money, it saved on gas, and it saved on hassles. Judging bus routes, one could even arrange meetings with friends. That's what Aurum had done in preparation for the shopping trip. He'd contacted Kealey, and let her know when and where to hop on the bus. Where they were headed for shopping had already been picked out by the blond. The bus route even set a course straight for it.
A course for adventure. They'd set it. Clothes-shopping for Ami would be an all-day quest.
And so, Aurum sat on the bus, dressed in a set of blue jeans, and a long-sleeved gray shirt, and waited. Kealey's stop was coming up. He checked his watch again. The bus was right on schedule.
First instincts, Aurum realized, might as well go with them.
As he reached out, she fled a few steps out of his range. Aurum's hand lowered. For a moment, he worried he'd done something to offend her. He'd been too worried, too forward...
But it seemed she wasn't mad. He awkward smile told him she wasn't glaring. And her words? They told him it just wasn't safe.
"I see," Aurum replied quietly. He watched her check her hand for wounds, and held back with restraint. From where he was standing, it didn't look like she was bleeding heavily. That was good.
His eyes rose back up to meet the darkness of her shades as she looked at him guiltily.
>>"...I...er... Sorry, it's just better for you to not touch me. I have a mutation that affects living things, I wouldn't want to hurt you on accident."
Aurum nodded, and scratched the back of his head awkwardly. He glanced towards the kitchen. "It's fine. I should have known something was up with the gloves and the shades." Though, she hadn't said anything about the shades. It was just a guess. Who knew? Maybe, she just really thought they were stylish.
>>"Do you have anything I can tie around my finger?... Cloth tape perhaps?"
"I think I could find something, though... maybe, I could just give you a pair of dish-washing gloves? Those might be easier to chop vegetables in." If she turned the offer down, he knew right where to find the tape.
>>"First thing we need to do is chop the eggplant into good sized rounds."
Aurum's eyes moved to the eggplant.
>>"Once we have all of the eggplant cut up, we will salt and pepper them and toss them into into the oil to fry for a bit."
"Sounds good," He commented.
She washed her hands, and split the eggplant for both of them to cut.
>>"You might need another knife, Aurum."
"Right, right," Aurum replied, with a hint of amusement in his voice. He'd been ready to grab the knife, and do all the chopping while she was doing other things. Now, they were splitting their manpower. He walked over, and pulled out another knife, then got to cutting the eggplant into rounds. He tried not to smirk when she gave him directions. He'd worked with cutting things before, after all. His eyes rose momentarily as she showed him something, then dropped back down towards the tenacious wielding of cutlery. A job like this was easy. It didn't take long for Aurum to work up a good pile of half-inch eggplant rounds. They were all the same approximate size, just as Andrea had asked of him.
Aurum looked up as she detailed how they'd layer them. Like noodles. Got it. ... er. Her knife slid down through the finger of a glove. Aurum's heart momentarily skipped a beat.
"Hey, watch out," he told her. Aurum set his knife down, and turned towards her. For all intents and purposes, it had looked like she'd chopped off her fingertip to him. He waited until he had her attention, then looked her in the shaded eye. "You okay?"
His eyes dropped to the glove. He felt compelled to hold up her hand and make sure the finger was all still there, but... why was she wearing gloves in the first place?
"The building where you sign up with classes should be... over there, somewhere." Aurum muttered. He glanced up from his map at the direction he'd pointed, then submerged himself back into the map quest, and flipped the paper around. "Maybe not..."
Okay, so maybe the plan to help Shin sign up for classes wasn't going as smoothly as he'd wanted. The campus was big, and Aurum had usually stuck to the classroom areas. He'd been to the main offices once or twice, but for the most part, he'd just signed up for classes online. Shin hadn't found out about online sign-ups, though. He'd waited far too long to look into what courses were open. Now, they were here and rushing.
Aurum's focus rose back to Shin. The boy was glowering at passerby as rain drizzled down from above. Aurum smoothed the dripping map again, and folded it. He slipped it away into his pocket with an exaggerated sigh. Aurum sauntered forward, hands-in-pockets. He bowed his head, and stowed his smirk. "Guess we'll just have to ask someone for directions."
They'd ask someone on-campus for help. Yes. That would work out nicely. That wasn't the true main objective here, though. There was more at work today than just getting Shin out of the shop to attack his 'class sign-up problems head-on. Maybe one of those cute girls could help Shin with his problem? Aurum pulled Shin along, towards the group.
"Cheers," Aurum smirked, raising his empty glass. Their drinks clinked. Shin polished off his own. Aurum tipped out a drip.
Good to the last drop.
He turned in his chair to thank the waiter as he brought them drinks. Aurum snagged his own, and nursed it. This was much better. Laughter, positive conversation, less brooding. Fantastic.
Aurum took a swig. The corners of his mouth drew back at Kealey's -hilarious- question.
Tights? Spandex? Aurum laughed. "Seriously, kid. If they've got you dressed like a Shakespearean actor, you need to find a better angle on your life. Like, college. Put that big brain to ushe, and..." He slurred, then fell silent.
Aurum looked into his drink. He turned the glass, and swirled everything Jacen was with the ice. Important. Gone. Important.
And gone.
Kealey missed the man. There wasn't anything Aurum could do about that. Like he'd thought earlier, she needed more reliable people in her life. Now that... that, he might be able to handle. Maybe not dating her, but being there.
A wry thought passed through his mind. It wasn't like he could date an Empath, anyway.
Heh.
>>"Hey, what's up? You've been quiet for a while now."
>>”You did get awful quiet over there. What’s going through your head?”
Aurum looked up at them, matching Shin's smirk with a wry grin of his own. "Nothing. But since we've stopped moping around for the moment, let's keep it that way. Tonight's getting a bit heavy. I say we..." He knocked back the drink in one fluid motion, and set the glass back on the table with a clack. "Move on."
>>"The eggplant, potatoes, tomatoes, and the beef. We need a good sized pan to heat up the oil in too.."
As she listed, Aurum searched. Potatoes, eggplant, tomatoes... One by one, the ingredients found their way onto the counter. Aurum hefted a decent-sized pan up onto the oven top. Some onion, a carton of eggs, and a gallon of milk joined the other things.
He looked to Andrea as she apologized for the rapidfire listing.
>>"Sorry, that was my Mana speaking. I don't' usually bark out orders like that...you've got some powder on your back..."
Aurum shook his head with an understanding laugh. "No, it's okay. I'm fine with... what was that about powder...?" He peered over his shoulder, and turned, like a dog chasing his tail. Where was... the powder... ah. There. She reached out and got it.
Aurum smirked. "Thanks." He didn't know what he'd do without her. Be powdered, he guessed.
>>"First comes the eggplant. Where are your kitchen knives?"
"I'll get those," Aurum stated. He walked over to where he kept them, and grabbed what they'd need. A sharp knife found its way onto the counter, right near the eggplant. "What next?" He asked.

>>"Would you like to start preparing for the main course?" "I could wash up the dishes if you would like to take a break instead."
Aurum appreciated the offer, but he was ready for more cooking. "Starting the main course is fine by me. What do I need again? I'll grab the ingredients." He wanted to make sure everything turned out right.

Touchy-feely time had been over, hadn't it? But then, Shin had pulled them right back into the mix. It was stunning how one little question from the guy elicited such a massive response. It wasn't a positive 'stunning'.
Aurum's grip on his new drink tightened. Dammit, Shin... Leave the poor woman alone. He fell silent as Kealey spoke. First relationships were always the toughest. After that... you understood that not every relationship could end well. Not until 'that one'. Aurum still hadn't found 'that one'. Kealey sounded like she was saying Jacen was hers.
But he'd left her. For whatever reason, he was gone. Aurum took a gruff swig.
She really needed more reliable people in her life.

>>”You’ll be needing a way to get a hold of me if I’m going to be helping you shop.”
Kealey had out her cellphone. She was giving him her number. He pulled out his own phone. "Good idea." They exchanged numbers. When they were done doing that, Aurum looked up from his screen at her. "Call me when you get an idea of when a good day would be." He could probably make time with his schedule. That wouldn't be a problem. In the mean time, research and brainstorming seemed in order.
Aurum waited with Kealey at the bus stop until the city bus arrived.
