The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Devon was still working on making the blizzard stop. As impossible it sounded, for one man to stop a storm of this magnitude, it was slowly showing sign of change. It was poetic, really; using his powers to do the unimaginable, man against nature, that kind of thing. Svetlana was impressed. He had one of the most incredible powers she had ever seen, and yet he was using them with more control, and hers with more respect, than most others she had worked with.
>>“It’s not just mutants even. Did I mention that already? I can’t remember. We’re putting effort and energy where the need is, where the change has to come from. Lot of that is in education and financial assistance for minorities. The LGBT and mutant rights cases are the main legal fights we’re involved though,”
Svetlana nodded at that. "Makes sense." Mutant rights had always been tied into minority rights; one could not progress without another. People liked to blame genetics, or deny genetics, however their political interests required, and mutants often got caught in the middle of the fight, along with others. Not to mention all the people whose mutant identities intersected with others.
Devon made an offer to her; it was just as polite as his previous questions, but he seemed passionate about the possibility. Sveta had to admit, his enthusiasm was contagious. For the first time in a long time, she actually felt like she wanted to be a part of something, and even though she had her concerns, she felt a lot less hesitant about working with mutants in Haven than she had with any other place.
>>“Sorry I’m rambling. I think maybe the influence of the energy prep is mixing with my anxiety about the storm, and I’m certainly getting tired. Not that I’m blaming you. I really do appreciate the help. I’d have passed out by now probably… somewhere back there.”
"Take your time." Sveta nodded with a smile "I am happy to help. And once we are finished... we should go somewhere warmer, and you should tell me more about Haven. I can't believe I am really saying dis, but I am interested."
Maybe Haven would turn out to be something good. Every storm needed to end once...

>>"I play guitar but I'm nothing amazing on it. Dance is my real passion."
"Dance is good" Sveta nodded with a smile. He did not seem like the ballroom dancing type, so he was probably not going to demonstrate his skills right here at the gala - but Sveta enjoyed dancing, and liked people who took similar enjoyment in it. Not to mention that if the guy could charm some women into a dance, he would score major points for Haven... everyone loved a dancer, after all. >>"What about you? What do you do?"
"Many things" Sveta shrugged with a chuckle. There was no good answer to that question "I mostly... well. I'm here to charm people with my exotic accent." she grinned. It was partly true "I have powers that are useful to Haven, but I only recently joined... it is good to have a sense of purpose for once. I was just surviving day to day for a while, and it was not much fun."

Sveta was looking forward to going out with a friend. It had been forever since she had done that - out, on the town, to buy food like a normal person, not wearing a mask or a dress, and not using her powers to boost other mutants. Sure, Agnes was a mutant too, but they were also friends, and Sveta did not have many of those. Maybe, for one night, the two of them could honor their unspoken agreement, and pretend that they were just two average gals, having some food and maybe a drink...
Sveta spotted Agnes on the sidewalk before she other girl noticed her. Agnes was absorbed in her phone, and from the look on her face, Sevta could tell it was not a very pleasant conversation. For a split second she wanted to reach out and tap her on the shoulder, but obviously, it would have been a horrible idea.
"Hello" she smiled instead, waving a hand. She was similarly casually dressed, in jeans and a blouse, wearing her elbow-length gloves and a fashionable scarf wrapped around her neck. She was dressed in blues and greens, avoiding her usual red-hued wardrobe for once. "Have you been waiting for long? I'm sorry... Is everything okay?" she inquired, nodding at Agnes' cellphone, wondering if her friend had gotten some bad news, or maybe was in the middle of an argument...

The winged guy managed to lunge for the puppermaster and... touch him? That was... not very impressive at all, and earned a groan from Sveta as he got hit by one of the puppets, having been distracted by her would-be savior's heroic attempts. She continued to struggle, of course, but things were not looking very good...
"Get off me!" the puppetmaster snarled, kicking out in the man's direction. The puppets seemed momentarily confused. Instead of one, now there were two possible wills giving them instructions on what to do... and it made them sluggish in following either. As the winged person reach out to one of them, it allowed itself to be reabsorbed with almost visible relief.
"WHAT!" the puppetmaster yelled, staring incredulously as one of his bodies was absorbed by someone else "NO!"
Realizing what had happened - although not sure how - he began struggling in Svetlana's direction. "Bring her to me!"
If he was going to keep his puppets, if he was going to defeat this... this thief who was using his own powers, he needed to get to the Russian girl first. Sveta knew this too, but she was surrounded. And momentarily surprised too. This guy was... what, another mimic?... Go figure...

>>“I would say that I’m a supporting keystone. The bridge of people are the big deal. We’re all working together, optimally to achieve a number of great things while bridging separate groups. I hope Haven can do that. I just help center it all. It’s important to me that the bridge survive without me, so I guess I need to find a good civil engineer in case the keystone is around.”
He had it all laid out in his plans. Sveta could not help but admire the clarity with which Devon talked about his plans and his ideas. Haven was not a run-of-the-mill "mutants banding together" kind of thing. It was social change, profound and well-planned, and spanning beyond the mutant community. The guy knew how to dream big.
And it was different from the X-men as well. She could tell before she asked, but she wanted to hear his thoughts on it anyway.
>>“Privacy is important to me and I’m afraid the X-Men don’t have that as much. I think they’re also bound more by the public than is always good for them.”
"Dat is true." Sveta agreed with a nod. "I never stuck around with them for dat reason. People knew too much about them... and too many people knowing my powers exist... can be dangerous." To the team, to Sveta herself, and to the residents of New York City.
The storm was clearing now, but she could tell that concentration took a toll on Devon. She let go of his hand when he was done, to give him time to breathe. He was doing well - even with the power boost, his focus was impressive.
>>“We help those who can’t always help themselves too, who maybe even others can’t help. We find a way to make a safe haven for others, especially those at the greatest need.”
"That... sounds like just what the city needs, actually." Sveta smiled a little "Something mutants like me would need."

>>"Well to be honest much the same myself. Got an invitation from Devon to come and talk to people. Though the entertainment was a big part of saying yes. Man I wish I was up there."
So, all three of them were here to promote Haven. Sveta wondered just how many people Devon had convinced to do the same... the gala appeared to be pretty saturated with them. She could see Devon himself, as well as Rebecca from the X-men, and some other mutants busy chatting up guests all around the dance floor. It was impressive, the social pull Haven already had. It gave Sveta bright hopes for the future.
>>”Well, I guess I should get my butt back out there and continue trying to win people over. Wish me luck…”
"You don't need luck darling, you sweep them off their feet" Sveta smiled at her friend as Agnes walked off. She was a charming young woman when she wanted to be, even if her powers made her shy. Sveta turned back to Max, curious to know him a little more.
"So... you perform too? Are you a musician?"
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
They had fought themselves into a corner. There was only a brick wall behind them, and a constant stream of puppet bodies in front of them, grasping and punching and struggling. Sveta could hear the puppetmaster cackle, which was almost a cliché thing to do for a villain at this point. The guy by her side, wings or not, was not proving to be very useful... other than giving an extra pair of hands for holding off the bodies, but they both knew they could not do so indefinitely. He declined her offer of a hand, which was no surprise, really, since she had neglected to tell him what exactly she was offering. They got distracted by the brawl again, and once she was done beating down the latest opponent, she was about to explain what she meant...
... but the guy lunged forward instead, apparently determined to get to the source itself.
It was a desperate move, and potentially dangerous too. Sveta assumed from the puppetmaster's hints that he could not absorb mutants, but she could not know for sure, and neither did her new ally. But he was also right - if they were going to end this, they had to take out the mutant, and she could not get near him without giving him exactly what he wanted. So instead, Sveta moved to she side, drawing most of the bodies with her (since she was the main target), allowing an opening for the winged man even as she was bogged down by another dogpile.
Better make it quick...
The puppetmaster frowned as the winged man lunged for him, and attempted to bring up more puppets for his own defense... but between the sudden attack, and many of them still going for Sveta, he was not quite fast enough.

Sveta rolled her eyes as she struggled to get free. Humor. Great. Dude thought he was good-looking AND funny. Leave it to her to get an annoying Knight in Shining Armor. Not that she had any place to complain.
"Less jokes, more punching."
The puppermaster was definitely not backing away from the fight. Even with two people against him, he had more than enough bodies to throw around. Sveta was getting out of breath, and her only hope of getting away was for her sudden rescuer to have a power that was more useful than charms. Did he?...
>>"Yes."
"Great." Sveta ducked, and willingly took a few hits to get closer to him "Might be about time to use them. Need a hand?"
Hopefully, they were actually useful in a fight.
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
The winged man seemed intent on saving the day. Sveta kicked and struggled herself as the grip of one of the many bodies loosened on her. The guy was not much help, but he might just provide an opening long enough for her to get away... and she needed to get away. Her powers, mixed with the puppet dude's, would have been catastrophic, and possibly permanent. If it meant leaving Wing Dude to deal with the dogpile by himself... she would just have to do that for the greater good.
>>"Hell of a date you're having."
"Tis not a date... tis attempted kidnapping" Sveta clarified with a grunt as she managed to tear her arm free and dish out a punch to a mean-looking woman. The puppetmaster began to say something, but he was hit with the body the winged guy threw at him. It staggered him for a moment, but then the body got reabsorbed... and another took its place. "DAMN there's so many of him..."
The momentary off-balance was just enough for the man to lose his grip on his puppets for a second. It allowed Sveta to slip form the middle of the pile, and break mostly free, before the puppets turned to follow. She could kick and punch more freely now, but her escape routes were still blocked.
"Hey! Got any powers other than the wings?..."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
There was a... roar?... as someone new joined the fight. Sveta was not sure if it was another one of the puppets, or a whole separate entity, and honestly, right now she did not even care. The Puppetmaster seemed to know how her powers worked, and looked intent on going in straight for a kiss. Which, on top of making her feel like throwing up, was also a tremendously bad idea. If this guy went haywire, he could merge half the block into his collection... Sveta kicked one of the puppets. She still felt bad about hurting civilians, but less so than allowing a whole army of them to be zombified.
The Puppetmaster was distracted by the roar, and turned away from the dogpile to see who had shown up. He looked vaguely surprised.
"You?... What the hell are ya doin' here, hm? This ain't a good neighborhood for the likes o' ya... an' if you wanna join the collection, get in line. Gotta deal w'my date first..."

>>“First, you don’t have to do anything, but if you do, yes, the fanciest of dinners!”
Sveta smiled at that. She was not going to turn a fancy dinner down. She so rarely had a chance to enjoy one, without being on some kind of a mission or expecting some kind of trouble. And if she could someone else to treat her... all the better.
>>“And yeah, that’s part of it. I actually started a company that’s part treatment center, part self-help spa. Humans and mutants alike, but I’ve got training and special programs for mutants. That’s Hadden’s Havens."
"I could go for a spa right now" Sveta chuckled, but she did pay attention to what Devon was saying. He owned a company... no wonder he was so easily coming up with offers of fancy dinners. There was more to this guy than she had first thought, a mutant that can control the weather. Having powers did not always make someone successful. And definitely did not mean successful mutants would want to help others. But apparently Devon did.
>>"I’ve also partnered with a few of my investors, some politicians, and some liked-minded individuals to open Haven: a humanitarian organization, educational facility, and outreach program. I do tend to focus on mutants learning to live with their abilities, especially control. A lot of personality impact tends to come with growing up with these powers.”
"So... you are kind of a big deal, huh." Sveta smirked. It sounded like he was doing a whole lot of good with the resources he had. A lot of good for mutants. Go figure. Sveta had decided long ago that people like this only existed in fairy tales. She would know; she was supposed to marry one...
>>“Wow, sorry. I’m excited about this anyway, but I should focus. Do you mind helping again?”
The wind around them was picking up again. Sveta nodded at the request, and reached out with her gloved hand to hold Devon's hand while he dealt with the blizzard. They would probably need to repeat this more than once, until the clouds were finally broken up. She didn't mind. It felt like she was doing something useful.
"So... why not just sponsor Xavier's then? Or the X-men?" she ventured, out of curiosity.

Despite her better judgment, Sveta felt her stomach fold in on itself. Meeting the blonde woman was not one of her fondest memories, and it coupled with the guilt that maybe her blood had been used for unspeakable things without her knowledge. It felt like someone had take a part of her body, her person, and used it for things she did not want to imagine.
>>"I didn’t get the impression of a nefarious personality, but someone who tried to make hard decisions for good reasons. I can sympathize with that, but either way maybe I can figure out what happened there.”
"I am not sure I want to know." Sveta muttered, surprised by her own honesty. She had just met this guy, after all, and he had admitted to both working at the Sanctuary, and to not thinking the blonde woman was a bad person. And yet somehow Sveta was trusting him with her feelings. Ugh.
>>“Unfortunately, I’ve had some accidents in my past. When your emotions influence your powers and you can make storms… Control is very important to me, and so are other persons’ development. That includes understanding boundaries and living within their power. It should be celebrated, but first that means learning of the challenges and working through them. Sorry, psychologist talk.”
Sveta chuckled at his ranting, and the awkward apology at the end. He was throwing a lot of big words around, that's for sure. She could not even imagine what it would be like to have powers that reacted to her mood. Her powers were always on, like an aura or a cocoon... not something she had to learn to control, but definitely something she had to learn to live with.
>>“I ramble and I think it’s partly the energetic influx your power creates. I will definitely buy you dinner after this. If we find any place open, it’s my treat. Definitely.”
"I'll take you up on dat." Sveta nodded with a smile "Although I don't think anything is open in dis weather... so I guess if I want a fancy dinner now I have to keep helping you stop the blizzard, huh." she added, mostly joking. She was going to help him anyway, they had already established that. "So... that's what you do? Help mutants live with their powers?"
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
>>”This is my friend, Sveta. I…wouldn’t shake hands with her. She has a bit of a cold.”
Sveta chuckled at the introduction. It was nice of Agnes to leave it up to her whether she wanted to share information about her powers. It also made her sound like she was full of germs, but still, it was considerate.
>>"Nice to meet you Sveta. Hope you feel better."
"Nice to meet you too, Mr. Rosewood." she smiled back. The guy was polite, and not making any comments about the two lovely women in front of him. That was a good sign. He seemed nice enough, even though a little tense in the middle of the fancy setting.
>>"Do you guys attend things like this often? To be honest I feel like a fish out of water. The entertainment is nice but I don't really know what to do with everyone just mulling about talking politics."
"Not often" Sveta chuckled at the question, glancing at Agnes "We are actually here tonight to talk to people about Haven. Mostly work, and some entertainment." she added with a smile, nodding towards the stage "How about you? What brings you here?"
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
They walked side by side, Devon careful not to touch her. It was almost comfortable, the way he kept most of the ice and snow off of them. She could tell when he was using his powers by the color of his eyes, but now she knew he would ask before he needed her help again.
>>“Ah then I presume it was the Sanctuary’s previous resident team that tried to abuse your abilities?... I completely understand how touching someone could be dangerous. Some mutants have enough trouble with their powers as is, let alone amplified.”
"Very dangerous." Sveta nodded solemnly. She still carried the guilt of hundreds of people dropping dead from a heart attack she accidentally caused years ago. "De Sanctuary... a woman who worked there took some of my blood. I don't know what she did with it, but she must have thought it was useful."
The Sanctuary had been involved in various shady dealings over the years, as far as Sveta understood. They could have used her blood for anything. Or nothing. She was not sure she'd ever know.
"I know I can help, if my powers are used well." she added "Tis just... not many people are as careful as you are."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
>>”Oh, wow! Devon never told me. Then again, he probably didn’t know that we knew each other... The same, actually. I’m performing with a small group from the philharmonic and spreading the word, I guess.”
Sveta smiled. It seemed like they did not only both know Devon, but he had also recruited them both for a similar purpose. Sveta had to give it to him, he had a good eye for recruitment. If her own experience was any indication, he was also very polite and respectful, and knew exactly what he was asking of the members of Haven. He was here himself tonight; Sveta had spotted him earlier.
>>”Just this one set is done. We have another after the beat poet and some piano player coming up next. Then you get to see me on stage. How about you? How’ve you been? Been forever!”
"It really feels like forever" Sveta sighed with a nod, basking in the knowledge that she was not only reconnected with an old friend, but would be working with her in Haven in the future. "I have been... well. Not really doing anything exciting... soing my best to stay out of trouble." she added with a chuckle. With Svetlana's powers, trouble was never really far away.
A young man approached them; Sveta could tell from his body language that he wanted to talk to Agnes, so she stepped aside slightly to keep herself out of reach. Accidentally brushing against someone at this event, even with her gloves on, would not have been acceptable risk. The guy gushed about Agnes' performance; Sveta smiled and nodded. She deserved the praise.
