The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It was a nice bar. Not too shady or too dirty, with a nice selection of drinks and people that looked like they were just out to have fun with friends, rather than conducting some kind of business, or sulking in dark corners. The place might have looked like a hole in the wall from the outside, but inside, it was a hidden gem. Sveta smiled as she looked around. The food smelled good, too.
Booker caught up to her.
>>”So reading my mind. Lady’s choice? Where would you like to sit?”
She considered the question for a moment, then nodded towards the bar. The chairs looked comfortable, and they could have a conversation there without others listening in. Not that she planned on talking about anything secret or overly personal... Svetlana just liked her privacy.
She took a seat and waited for Booker to do the same.
"You'll need to tell me what's good here." she told him "Other than the salsa I mean. I'd like something spicy though... and enough that the drinks won't knock us down. Hm?"
It was a reasonable request, as far as Sveta was concerned. She was not here to get s***faced and do things she would regret later. Not even if there was an adapted at her side to keep her from causing real trouble. That thought reminded her of the blessed, peaceful lack of coffee buzz she had been feeling since she had walked up to him. Once their orders were done, she decided to pick up the conversation.
"So... mind if I ask something?... It is kind of easy to notice your aura, when someone like me is in it. But... how did you figure it out?"

>>”Svetlana. Well I’m glad you found it. Sorry, it is a bit of a hole in the wall.”
There was something almost puppy-like in the way Booker's face lit up when she showed up. The guy really was easily entertained. Sveta could not help but smile back anyway; she knew by now that he had that effect on people. She would have guessed he had an aura like her own, had she not known that he was adapted.
>>”Ugh, welcome to Tequila Mockingbird... Um, they’re known for their tequila shooters and their microbrew beer. Food wise, they have most of the stuff to be expected, but seriously, stay away from the salsa. They have a recipe that includes alcohol you won’t taste and you’ll be knocked off your butt before you know it..."
"No salsa. Got it." Sveta chuckled. She was good at holding her alcohol, but she was not going to share that bit of information just yet. The night was still young, and who knew where it would go...
>>"Aaaand, that’s about it! Shall we?”
"Sure." she nodded, walking in ahead of him. There was something about men walking into bars first, but she had stopped caring a long time ago. If there was a bar fight inside, she could hold her own.
Fortunately, there was no fight; there was music, though, and drinks, and the smell of spicy foods, which made her mouth water. The workout had made her hungry.
"Better not drink on an empty stomach, hm?" she glanced up at him "We deserve some food after working out..."

Sveta was glad Booker picked the bar; she would have had some trouble picking a place off the top of her head, especially in this part of town. It wasn't terribly far for her to go, but she had not been going out lately to places other than Haven and their private bars - and when she did, she was usually wearing a costume and beating someone up. Good old days.
When she showed, she found Booker waiting by the entrance, casually leaning against something like he needed any confirmation of how cool he was. Sveta was dressed in jeans and a deep blue blouse, with matching elbow-high satin gloves. She might have been bold around him at the gym, but she would not go out and about town without being safe about it.
"Hello" she smiled, waving her fingers at him as he looked up "Sorry for the wait, I had to find de place..." she glanced at the bar, which looked nice enough, then back at the librarian "Anything I need to know before we go in?"

Sveta felt like an idiot for a moment, asking out the random hot guy at the gym. But Booker seemed to had some kind of a magic power to put people at ease, even when they were being awkward. Sveta smiled back as they got out of the ring.
>>”Despite the stereotypes that we drink the blood of those who would dare to be loud in a library... We drink just like anyone else. And you should see us librarians at happy hour. I’ve almost had to call HR on several occasions for misconduct in a groping manner, if you catch you drift.”
Sveta arched an eyebrow. A gaggle of drunk librarians... now there was a mental image. She chuckled and shook her head. If Booker said he was up for a party, then she was going to take his word for it.
>>”In other words, yes. A drink would be nice. Hit the showers and meet up in an hour or so? I should run home and change. Unless you have a thing for sitting in nice bars, smelling of warrior sweat?”
"Girls don't sweat." Sveta deadpanned, then falshed him a grin "See you in an hour."
It did not take long for her to get home, shower (she did sweat, duh) and change. She did not want to show up overdressed; it was likely to be just friendly drinks, after all, and she did not want to sent the wrong message.

>>”Come on, Sveta. Let’s just go. Maybe it’ll just wig out and fall apart or chase after some pigeons or something.”
Agnes was clearly anxious. Sveta could commiserate. Being a mutant was not easy, even under the best of circumstances, and one was more likely than not to get harassed, or her night out ruined, by some racist piece of equipment. Agnes had seen her fair share of fights, and Sveta had too. They knew better than to provoke the robot.
Sveta was about to turn and walk away... but then the META pushed past her, heading for Agnes.
”Halt, mutant! You are under arrest for threatening public lives…”
>>”W-wait…what?!”
"What the F***!" Sveta reiterated, seeing the scared expression on her friend's face. If the buggy piece of sh*** decided that Agnes was a threat to civilians, its programming would attempt to take a mutant out by any means necessary. And judging from the sparks that flew from the handcuffs, it would not be kind to Agnes...
"Okay, dat's it!" Sveta was angry now, for her one night out being ruined, and her friend being threatened. Since the META decided Agnes was the more dangerous of the two of them, Sveta decided to fix at least that one bug in its system. "HEY!"
Sveta's kick was aimed at the part of the robot where its footing connected with its metallic body. It was not a particularly stable construction, and it stumbled off balance at Sveta's attack. She hoped it would be enough to turn its attention back to her.

>>”I do. And, I don’t mean to brag, but I’m definitely not the worst.”
If more librarians had been like this guy, Sveta would have actually gone to the library more often. Then again, she had not had much time for such things between running away from home, her would-be husband almost melting her face, and then defending New York City from criminals... Maybe there was a book for that?
Booker smiled and took her cue to end the sparring session, taking his own gloves off.
>>”’If you don’t get lost, there’s a chance you may never be found’.”
Sveta blinked, not sure at first what he was trying to say. It sounded... philosophical. It also sounded like he was trying to make her feel better about not having the awesome job experience he had with his own work.
>>”One of my favorite quotes. Essentially, it means that the journey to self-discovery is hard but if you don’t try, you’ll never find out who you are. Keep doing what you’re doing. You’ll find where you belong.”
"Thanks" Sveta smirked, but there was also a genuine tone to her voice. The guy was being nice to her, and not in a cheesy hitting-on-you-at-the-gym kinda way. That was too rare an experience to pass up.
Come on Sveta, you are getting soft.
"Do you want to grab a drink?" she offered after a pause. It came to her mind first because she enjoyed the conversation, and then she immediately realized that it sounded more like her asking him out. On second thought, it could be both, or either. She didn't really mind. "I mean... whatever librarians drink." she added with a smirk "Wouldn't want to ruin your reputation or anything..."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
No kidding. The guy really was a librarian, the kind that worked with actual books, and on top of that he had a job in one of the big ones. Sveta guessed that worked like many other workplaces: The bigger, the better. And even she had visited the New York Public Library before. In comparison, her own admission of being a PR assistant (for lack of a better term) did not sound very cool at all. To his credit, Booked seemed just as curious about it as she had been about his own work. Sveta could not quite tell if he meant it, or if he was just being nice, but either way, he earned himself a genuine smile between two punches.
>>”Ah well that's awesome. You like PR work and teaching?”
Did she? She did like Haven. She believed in Devon's vision, and was happy to work on something productive without chasing criminals. With that said... she had done more exciting things in the past. In order to brush off the question with a noncommittal shrug, she asked him about how he became a librarian.
>>”Curse of having my name. Everyone expected it so I had no choice. Truth is that I’ve just always loved books. I used to read a lot as a kid, read even more as an adult… Just became something I fell in love with. So I studied, interned, and eventually worked my way up to a librarian position. Now I get to be surrounded by some of the greatest and my favorite authors: Shakespeare, Austen, Angelou, Lovecraft. All in all…I’m pretty lucky, ya know?”
He was so... genuine about it. Sveta smiled again at the look in his eyes. It was the look of a person who truly loved his job, and found enjoyment in it. It was more attractive than all of his banter and flirting before. It came with a pang of regret: Svetlana had never spent much time reading the classics, and while she recognized some of those names, she had to shamefully admit to herself that she was probably still severely under-educated.
"That... sounds really nice, actually." she admitted, lowering her hands as they came to a natural break in their sparring. "I'm sure you get this all the time, but... you look like you love your job. And that probably makes you good at it too." she was not sure why she was suddenly getting all nice, but she kind of just blurted things out as she worked on getting her gloves off. "The first job I... studied for, it turned out to suck. It was just... not for me. And after that, it took a long time, and all kinds of temporary things, to find one that was... a better fit."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
>> ”That’s quite the compliment. But no. I’m a librarian, actually.”
Sveta blinked, this time in genuine surprise.
"Wait, seriously?" or in an adult movie?... She had heard about sexy librarians before, but they were usually skinny women in pencil skirts. Not that she had anything against gender equality in the workplace or anything. But damn, the guy was hot and smart? That was just unfair. Sveta signalled her frustration by throwing a few punches as they talked. >>”Though my co-workers have suggested the option before. What about yourself? I already surmised that you have to be a model, right?”
Sveta snorted and dodged, danciong back.
"PR assistant, actually" she shrugged, using the easiest term to explain the mostly recruiting work she had done for Haven since she joined. He did not neet to know about the rest... the former vigilante, former-former mail order bride, or any of that. "But I have done a lot of odd jobs. Like, teaching Russian." his job bugged her more than hers, though. "So you... how did you end up being a librarian?"
Out of all things.

The swimsuit made Sveta feel severely underdressed. Not just because it left a whole lot of skin uncovered, which made her feel uncomfortable to begin with, but also because she had an invitation to Devon's penthouse to some kind of a private party, and Sveta did not own swimwear that was even remotely fit for the occasion. In the end, she wore the one-piece swimsuit she used for swimming for training, one that was white and green with black lining and a low cut back. After some hesitation, she also put on a pair of gloves, made from the same material. When she swam to work out, she always wore them, in case she accidentally touched someone else. One could never be too careful.
Sveta walked into Devon's penthouse, impressed with the whole place, and the setup for the occasion. She noted that there were not many people around at all - she had expected a crowd, but all she saw was Devon himself (who looked gorgeous as ever in swim shorts) and a woman who seemed to have also just arrived. Sveta walked over with a smile.
"You said it was a private party, but now I feel really special" she chuckled, giving the place an appreciative look, then turned to the other woman "I do not think we have met?"
She was friendly, but did not offer a hand. She hoped Devon would have explained her powers. If he didn't, she would have to.

They were having a good time. Making new friends, not being on guard all the time, and joking around with an almost-stranger were still fairly new experiences for Sveta, but one that she found lovely. A little voice in the back of her mind still told her that he might be a spy, or an undercover agent, or that the sky was going to fall... but that was mostly the adrenaline from the fight speaking, and she knew how to shut it out. Mostly.
Booker laughed at her comment.
>>”Hey, a man’s gotta play up to his strengths,”
He went in for another attack, and Sveta dodged one jab, but caught the other on the side. She danced back, catching her breath. Boxing by the rules was harder than she thought.
"So... what are your strengths?" she grinned at him over her gloves "I mean, other than being... pretty." Pretty hot, actually, but the guy did not need another ego boost "Are you a model or something?"

May made an appearance more or less on time, dressed for training, and carrying a whole lot of gear and a... fanny pack? It made Sveta arch an amused eyebrow.
>>"Thanks for coming. Looking forward to getting some training in."
"Dis should be interesting" Sveta agreed with a smile, continuing to roll her shoulders and stretch her arms. She was not sure how physically exhausting this session was going to be, but she never said no to a good workout...
>>"You got anything in particular you want to work on?... Maybe we should go over each other's abilities so we have a good idea of what we are capable of. You said you boost powers by touch right?"
Sveta nodded. Max was right, it was a good idea to start with the basics.
"Double the power if we touch through clothes, while we touch." she explained, holding up her gloved hand "Triple power if I touch you skin to skin, and dat lasts for a few minutes even if I let go. Kiss..." she smirked, shaking her head to set a clear boundary "I don't do kisses anymore."
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
Sveta grinned as they walked past the robot, wondering if anyone was monitoring the video feed of her flipping off the camera-eye. If they were, even better. Whoever thought these things were a god idea, and not some dystopian horror show, deserved some obscenities.
>>”Haha! Come on. Let’s go before you get us in trouble or something. Been waiting to do that long?”
"For ever" Sveta giggled. She would have hooked her arm into Agnes', except she did not want to push her luck with her powers.
They got a few steps further, before she noted the mechanical whirr behind them, and paused. Girls' night out or not, Sveta was always alert of her surrounding. Especially when they included anti-mutant machines.
>>”Halt…bzzzzt… You are under arrest of threatening a police OFFiceR of thE Law…”
"Of, for **** sake" Sveta groaned, turning to look at the twitchy robot. "You are not an officer of the law, tin can. And I did not threaten you." she spoke louder and slower, like to a child "We come in peace!"
*italics are spoken in Russian* Thanks to Siren for the sig and avi!
They got into a comfortable rhythm. Not too monotone, but not too intense either, as Booker had started a conversation, and now they were punctuating sentences with jabs, dancing around each other.
>>”Wow…sounds tough. And, like, all the time, I’m guessing?”
"Yeah." Sveta nodded, dodging a jab and a punch and dancing another half turn before she threw some of her own. She was not going for serious damage, but she also had to consciously stop herself from using some moves unfit for a boxing match.
>>”Heh, and guess we’re more alike than figured. Except for the obvious…I’m way prettier.”
"You are!" Sveta agreed in an overly saccharine voice, as if talking to a little girl who asked if she was pretty. It was entertaining, this banter with the guy. "And you are really good at turning me off, too!"
Turning her powers off. Obviously. The pun was an added bonus.

It was Sveta's first official training session in Haven. Except there wasn't really anything official about it.
She had met Max at the gala, and he seemed like a nice enough guy. On top of that, Devon trusted him, and Sveta was fast learning that Devon had a good eye for trusting people. The both of them being a part of Haven, it only made sense that they would have to work together sooner and later. And since they both had time on their hands, waiting for missions and jobs, Sveta did not decline when she was asked to train with Max.
She knew his powers had to do with gravity. In order to experiment in a safe environment, she decided to use one of the CLASS facilities; it was not as high-tech as the Danger Room, but it did have a high level of safety, isolated from other parts of the complex. Whatever they did would be contained in one space. They could come up with the rest themselves.
Sveta waited for Max to join her, doing some stretching. She did not expect the training to get very physical, but it was a force of habit, loosening her shoulders and bouncing on her feet as she waited. She was wearing simple workout clothes, close fitting-pants and a tank top, and had her hair pulled back into a bun.
She had to admit to herself, she was excited about this session. She had not trained with someone who had powers since she had left the X-men. She never thought she would get back to it... but then Haven became a thing, and everything changed.
Hopefully, she thought as the door opened, this session was going to go better than some of the previous ones had.

>> ”S’all good. Never could say it before but I guess I can now tell people I got swept head over heels.”
Sveta snorted and rolled her eyes. The flirty one-liners just kept on coming. It was almost like the guy wanted to be hit on. Or just hit. She was still amused by the way she managed to sweep his feet from under him. The guy must have been used to clear rules, and people who kept them. She imagined Sam would be amused by the idea. When one was a vigilante, survival beat rules, every time. Well, most of the time.
>>”Duly noted. Though, you know, maybe keep the legwork to just bobbing and weaving? After all, everyone says that the best part of me are my legs.”
Sveta shook her head, making a show about giving in to his rules.
"Sure. I'll play nice." she did not usually like playing nice, but this was a person she just met, and one who had not done anything wrong, so she did not want to piss him off or seriously hurt him just yet. Boxing was okay, for now.
They danced around each other, getting a few hits in, and blocking others. They traded jabs and hits, more as a show of speed and strength, rather than a real fight. Sveta could see Booker was about to say something before he did, but she kept her defenses up, in case it was a distraction.
>>”Mind if I ask you a question?... Feel free not to answer – and I promise it’s nothing creepy. You know what I am. I take it that means you’re one of…you…them? A mutant, right? What can you do? If I may ask?”
Oh, there it was. It only made sense that if someone reacted to an adapted aura, that someone would be a mutant. Sveta knew she'd given herself away, but she hoped he would not pry. Now that he did, even though he gave her a way out, she wanted to find the least suspicious way to answer. Good thing: She could claim any power she wanted. He had no way to check.
"I'm... I have an aura, like you" she said finally, keeping close to the truth, since that was the easiest way to lie "I am like coffee, to people. Like a coffee buzz." it was true. It was not the whole truth, but it was enough. "I give extra energy to people who stand close to me."
