The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It wasn't every day that Dante thought about odd things, like how well did dogs keep secrets. But really, how talkative was Duke? Sure, he loved and trusted his dog, but...this was weird.
"Well I don't really think about it often," he said with a shrug as they walked. She liked his power, which was good, but then she was asking questions, and he wasn't sure how to answer without giving away too much. "Well, being able to breathe smoke is an obvious one, but you saw how many more people came up after seeing my little smoke trick," he explained.
"I could make a smoke screen, if need be." He could also blow a puff of smoke in someone's face, but he didn't see that as striking this lady as 'useful.'
But the walking and talking was rather nice. It'd been awhile since he could just...talk. Not that he was very social, but it was still nice.

Great; his dog was telling her secrets. Honestly the smoke manipulator didn't know what to think about that. He wasn't quite sure the nature of her power, and Duke actually liked her. At the same time, he knew the dog had quite a few secrets on him, but he figured Duke loved him--obviously--so therefore wouldn't tell anything too revealing, right? Did dogs even have a code of decency? God this was confusing as hell.
Then came the obvious question. "Yeah. I probably should have mentioned that I can breathe smoke without any sort of repercussion, huh?" he said with a shrug. Honestly, he thought that part would be obvious, or at least easily inferred. But some things weren't that straightforward.
As they walked, he exhaled just a tiny ring of smoke, keeping the shape very tight, and letting it 'travel' with them as they walked, always the same distance away. The circle bent into a heart, a square, a five-point star, slowly and gradually transitioning shapes before going back to a circle, which he let float away, up into the air before finally turning to a cloud like smoke normally does, then fading into the air.
He took a breath, giving another light shrug. "It's mostly just for show, but it has its uses."

"Yeah, one could say we were cut from the same cloth; meant for each other," he said with a shrug. Dante lost the edge he'd usually had, but Duke tended to do that, and this girl....there was something different about her. She was sweet. Almost too sweet.
Dante blinked as she spoke. "Who does what?" he asked, looking confused as he finished his cigarette and put it out, flicking it into a trash can like a sane person.
"Oh, yeah. I can manipulate smoke, but I have to breathe it in first," he answered simply; no need to get to the full physics of his power, after all. There were things he didn't really intend to share with anyone that wasn't family, after all, and he'd even kept a handful of secrets from them. But this girl was nice; he wondered what her angle was.
Honestly though, he was enjoying the walk almost as much as Duke seemed to. It was rather enjoyable, to be honest. So enjoyable that he almost expected the ground to open up in front of them or something.

"That's true," he murmured, biting his lip a little as he pulled out two sheets; one to sketch on, and one for the final selection. "Oh sure, you can set them there, or over here by the desk if you want," he said, his pencil moving quickly yet meticulously across the sketch page.
He'd sketched out several Ankhs, some basic, some more complex and elaborate. Some had very sharp features, others were more rounded. They ranged from traditional to things that he'd only just now come up with. All in all, he may have sketched out ten or so of them, and one of them was exactly like the one in the sketchbook, so there was sure to be one she'd like.
And price wasn't an option; not that he planned on overcharging her. Hell, he'd thought about cutting his first few clients a deal, and then making his money off of the business they brought in. Also could help make return customers out of them, and this was one he had to admit he wouldn't complain if he saw again.
"Alright, here's a few you can pick from. The basic one is there, but I like to give the option of something with a more personal touch," he explained. Honestly, this part was something he had a love-hate relationship with. It all depended on the client, but she seemed nice enough, and with Dante, what you gave was what you got.
Once she decided, he'd drawn out the final one, making sure the measurements were exactly as specified. Then, once everything was situated, he grabbed his equipment and prepared to get started. Part of him wished he'd recommended somewhere else, but this would look really good where she'd said, and while he hated people in general, his customers were a different situation.

In his mind, Dante was already doing the math and figuring the dimensions as she spoke. "Yeah that seems like a decent size," he said as she stood to her feet and removed her coat. He had to say, he really admired her style. Though, he didn't get paid to admire the potential clientele; he made the money by getting appointments on the books and putting ink to skin.
"I was thinking on my left inner shin and ankle area....Unless, of course, you have a better idea where to put it." He smirked, giving a light chuckle, though his cheeks grew warm to reflect the light pink they were turning. That was...flirting, wasn't it? It'd been awhile, but he was certain she was--no. He wasn't here to flirt, he was here to make money.
"Oh, I could think of a few places, but I like that idea," he said with a wink, somewhat taking the bait, but at the same time playing it professional and going with her idea. After all, no harm if it was all in good fun, right? Maybe. "So, if you don't have any plans, I can actually get this one drawn up real quick and we can go ahead and get this one done," he said after a few moments, standing to his feet.

He slid into the desk as she sat across from him and flipped through one of his notebooks. "You do your own work, eh? Sounds interesting. Maybe one day soon the roles can be reversed," he said casually; sure, he'd need money to pay her, which meant it'd be after he was on more solid ground, financially, but he hadn't been here very long, and therefore had to start somewhere, right?
She'd found an Ankh he'd drawn; he really favored anything surreal, fantasy-based, or rooted in history or mythology. He inwardly gave a sigh of relief; if she'd wanted something like a portrait or something more realist he'd likely end up referring her to one of the other artists. Each one had their own distinct style, and he'd just so happened to have an area of expertise they were looking for. He listened to her request, visualizing the colors. "Hmmm...Goldish-green, with an aura of purple sounds like a good mix to me."
He smiled back at her, thinking. "So, how big were you thinking? And where would you like it?" he asked, propping his elbows on the desk and resting his head on his fists as he looked at her, already working on the rough idea in his head. He was also admiring the pretty face in front of him, but he was mostly working.

"He is sweet, but not to many people...he'd been abused when I got him as a pup, and my now ex-wife likely didn't treat him well either. So he's sort of...isolated. And being able to talk to them probably helps out," he said with a shrug as he took another drag of the cigarette, aiming to finish it before the walk.
Duke, on the other hand, was happy to be going with this strange, new woman. She seemed sweet, and she understood him. "Nope! You're nice. You talk to me. And Dante likes you too."
He looked over at her when she offered to take the leash. Now this would be the true test, though he was sure she'd come out okay. "Sure, why not. I was going to wait until I finished this, but I think you and Duke would both enjoy it."
He handed Zoe the leash and then picked up the guitar case as he took a long drag of the cigarette and again exhaled, and then immediately inhaled the smoke.

Dante was somewhat lost in his thoughts; it had been a boring day, after all. But as he was walking back towards the front of the building, he was stopped by a rather attractive redhead. Looking for a tattoo parlor. It seemed like his day was starting to turn around. And if he played his cards right, he'd get some business on the books.
"Oh, you aren't bothering me; technically my break's over," he said with a small shrug, his voice casual but showing a little more of a professional tone than was usual. "You're in the right place though. And I just so happen to be a tattoo artist, if you want to come inside," he said, his voice brightening a bit.
He held the door open for the lady, both being nice, and sort of checking her out as she walked in. "My name's Dante," he said after a moment, walking to his desk, where he had notebooks of his drawings and samples already out. "So, was there something in particular you had in mind, or do you just wanna look at my work and see if you like anything?"

It was looking to be another slow day.
Dante was still working on building up business. While he'd made a few appointments today, things were still building rather slowly. At least he'd have some money a few days from now, anyway. The other artists were pretty cool, but he was working with a talented group; part of him just hoped he could keep up with them. Sure, he was talented; he knew that, but they were a little older and more experienced. But...they'd trusted him to do a good job, so...there he was.
Currently, he was propped up against the outside of the side of the building, cigarette between his lips. He was wearing a black leather jacket, with chains dangling from the pockets, and a pair of blue jeans with a similar chain dangling from the left side. On his feet were his traditional black sneakers.
He took a drag from the cigarette, letting the smoke stream into the air before sucking it into his lungs. That was one thing he hated about New York. The bloody cold. But his life was here now, after all, since the divorce his ex-wife and father-in-law had made it so he'd never get another tattoo-related job in the whole damn state. Lesson for the kiddos: Never marry your boss's daughter.
The young man put out his cigarette, then exhaled through his mouth, releasing a thin stream of silvery-gray smoke that spiraled and swirled as it left, making it stream and twirl elegantly, idly shaping it and making the vapor stream dance. As the stream lifted higher into the air, it spread, but not losing its form. The farther away the stream got, the less control he had over it, and once it got past nine feet into the air, it would lose its form and just become a cloud of smoke as physics took over.
He stuck his hands in his pockets, slowly making his way back inside. Maybe things would pick up soon, though he kind of wondered if using his ability inside would be considered smoking...

The smoke-manipulator gave sort of a dry "Heh," at her comment. "Well, you got my attention, and Duke's affection. Which is still a hell of a feat; he hates most people..." The like me was merely implied, but since she didn't know him very well, it wasn't certain whether or not that bit would be picked up.
"Well, I was paying attention because I was afraid if you tasted as sweet as you seem, Duke would have had a little snack," he joked, his cynicism sort of bleeding through there. "Though getting our names from him did sort of help prove your point." He gave a light shrug, pulling a pack out of his pocket and removing a cigarette, lighting it and taking a drag from it. He exhaled the smoke away from Zoe, but then inhaled it back in through his nose. He gave a relaxed sigh, whistling for Duke, who hopped off of the bench and joined Dante by his side, where the mutant clipped a leash onto his collar.
"I think Duke needs a walk before we head home. You wanna come? I mean, since he's taken to you so well."

"Using your mutation to gather information. Not technically cheating, but it does give you an edge I don't have," he said with a grin, shrugging lightly. She was unique, to say the least, though he had to wonder what her mutation was like. He knew she was a mutant because no one could understand animals; that pet psychic stuff was a load of horse hockey. But it had to be difficult; while his power was easily discerned and seen as weird, or even amazing, he could only imagine how hard it must be to deal with hers.
And though he'd only known about his status as a mutant for maybe a year, if that long, he could sympathize with that. When his mutation became known--and he was pretty quick to show it off, at least to strangers; he'd only recently told his family--he could feel the atmosphere and people's opinion of his shift. Sometimes it was for the better, and others it was for the worst.
"Nice to meet ya, despite the mini-heart attack you gave my ass," he said with a chuckle.

Sure, Dante 'talked' to Duke, but like most people talked to their dog. This chick was talking about a full conversation, it seemed. Great...she was a nut. Wait....
Dante was noticing a few things. One, she was petting Duke in his favorite spots--it took Dante forever to find how Duke liked to be pet, and she found it in a split second. Both of them. And then...she said his both of their names. Okay. Mutant, not a nut. That wasn't so bad, though it was still creepy as hell.
"Holy ****....you really can talk to him, can't you?" he murmured, shaking his head with a small smile. "So, you gonna tell us your name, since we can't cheat?" he teased, his voice sort of dry, but not rude. It was just one of those things that came with being more of a cynic.

Duke let his tongue loll out of his mouth like a hundred-pound puppy as she pet him. "Yeahyeah. My human calls me Duke. Don't know why but I like it."
Meanwhile, Dante had turned around, watching the whole exchange. Well...half of it. She was....talking....to his dog. But what was even weirder than that, was that Duke was letting her. Duke didn't like anyone; he didn't even know if Duke liked all of Dante's family. And yet, here he was, a giant puddle on the bench.
And then the girl addressed him. "He doesn't like a lot of people. Kids, but most adults he's not a big fan of. I'm trying to figure out what it means that he actually let you," he said honestly with a shrug, lifting the guitar case in his left hand as his other hand flipped through the money. Not exactly a good haul, but he was at least eating for a few days, anyway.
What no bystander saw was how much effort it had taken for Dante not to beat the guy over the head with his guitar or something. But he was trying to make rent, and that was more important than giving some asshole what he deserved. Though the words that came out were going to come out no matter what, and behind the tone they were dripping with venom and hatred.
And then the crowd was beginning to disperse; Dante swore that if it wasn't for his sister, he'd have just gone to Minnesota or something. But he felt this would be a good way to get close to his family again, and that made it worth staying for. Since the crowd was gone, he removed the strap from off of his shoulder and picked up the money in his guitar case before putting his acoustic away.
It was then that he noticed the blonde woman still staring there, looking at Duke. Sure, Duke was a big old baby--to Dante. The list of people that Duke liked was about as short as the list of people Dante liked...they were cut from the same cloth like that. But the girl was stepping forward to the dog, asking could she pet.
"I wouldn't--" He'd tried to stop her. He'd earnestly tried to stop her; he was a cynic, sure, but he didn't necessarily harbor ill will towards humanity--well, maybe as a whole he did. But this certain member of humanity was pretty, and after the incident with the heckler, if one would call it that, he really didn't want to add Duke biting someone to this list of reasons why today sucked.
And yet...Duke liked her. The large black mass of muscle and fur looked up at the girl, tail wagging slightly. There was something different about this girl. Dante was his human. Saved him from an abusive home, and then did so again when he got Duke back from the evil female. But this female was different. Nice. And she spoke his language, which was pretty neat.
"Pet? Yeah. I don't think I'll bite you. I like it when Dante scratches right behind my ears. Or my ribs. Get my ribs." He rolled over on his side, now practically taking up the entire bench.
Dante looked back to see the girl hadn't left, and Duke was...a puddle of mush. "Well I'll be damned..." he murmured, letting out a low whistle, an amused grin on his face.

Dante had been in the city for a good few weeks now, pushing a month, and he was nowhere near used to things yet. He had what promised to be a decent job at a tattoo parlor, but he had to supplement his income while business picked up. So, he was in the park, playing guitar, with the open case at his feet, practically begging for money. Though, was it begging if you earned it? His now ex-wife had forced him to choose between his electric guitar and his dog, Duke.
Looking down at the big black dog, lying beside him on the bench, he smiled as he worked his magic on the black acoustic guitar. Luckily, the ex didn't think to get his amp or effect pedals for money, too. So, he'd managed to trade those off on a good acoustic, and now he had a dog and a guitar.
His fingers lightly moved over the fretboard, as his right hand held a pick that so sweetly strummed a melody that soon turned into his final song for the day. It was a song he knew all too well, and his eyes closed as his pick and fingers moved, and his voice began to sing, almost hauntingly. Occasionally, smoke would stream from his nostrils, swirling unnaturally as he played, and his eyes opened.
"I never dreamed that I'd meet somebody like you. And I never dreamed that I'd lose somebody like you," as he sang, a more solid puff of smoke escaped his nostrils, forming into a tight black heart, and as it floated away from him, it split in two before physics took over and it was just a dark, shapeless mass of smoke in the air.
His emotions welled up by the end of the song, and though he didn't cry, one could tell that it was even more heart-felt than when he began. "Freak...." Someone said as they walked by.
"Thank you sir, **** you too," he said brightly as he began playing something else, though after that little outburst some of the crowd began to dissipate a bit.
