The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The big man knelt down, and wiggled a shiny key in front of Iris. Iris liked shiny things, they were pretty. Mama and Sis wore a lot of shiny things. And Mimi walked through them which was funny. Iris' eyes grew wide as she inspected the key, forgetting about poking the big man. When it was offered, she grabbed the key with both hands, and waved it around, making zooming noises. Then, for good measure, she put it into her mouth. Because it looked like a very shiny lollipop.
>>"Howdy there, small child. Got free from your minders?”
The big man with the shiny necklace looked friendly. Iris was generally surrounded by friendly people, even in this strange new place. She toddled closer, craning her neck to look up at him. He did not seem to want to play tag.
>>”We should get you back to them, or you could help me keep this place safe. There’s a lot of bad stuff happening outside and I’m here to keep everyone safe and you could help.”
Help people. Safe from bad stuff. She knew those things. Mama and Mimi did those things. Iris nodded enthusiastically, then giggled, reaching out a finger again to poke him. "Ta!"
Iris toddled down another hallway, turning corners at random. There had to be snacks somewhere. "Mama? Mimi?" Playing tag was fun, but being alone was not fun. Especially being alone with no snacks. Iris wrinkled her nose and sniffled again. Then turning another corner, she came face to face with a stranger. She stopped, looking at him with large eyes, tilting her head. Iris generally had no fear of strangers within the Mansion; everyone in there was friend, and Mama and Mimi and Sis were there to protect her. But this was another place with new people. Irish had tagged the other kids and some of the adults, though. It was fun. After some hesitation, she reached out one hand, aiming to poke a finger at the man. "Ta?"
Something was... off. Iris, while happy and content with snuggling in her parents' bed, was not manifesting a power that day. Or the next morning, when Gawain changed back to Maya. After sleeping off the physical exhaustion of the battle, Becca and Mirror grew worried, and took Iris to DocProf. It was strange for her to not have any of the powers on her mutation roulette.
"Maybe it's a new one" Maya muttered, putting a hand on Becca's leg in a soothing gesture, even though she was worried too. "Maybe we just haven't triggered it yet?"
"Yeah, it's... hard to sleep in a strange place." Gawain muttered. "For her, I mean." For him too. As much as he had spent nights in worse places, this was different. They were, for the moment, homeless, until the rebuilding of the Mansion began. He held Iris for a moment, leaning against Becca, and then picked up the baby blanket from the bed, steeling himself. "Alright. Let's go find that bed, shall we?"
"Alright, come here." Gawain muttered, taking Iris from Becca's arms and wrapping her in another hug. The little one was still clinging, snuffling against his shoulder. "We're fine." He murmured, patting her back. As much to himself as to anyone else. "We're gonna be okay." He looked at Becca over Iris' shoulder. "She's not gonna go back into the bed, is she..."
Gawain felt so relieved to see his daughter. There had been moments in the fight where everything had seemed lost. He had been in many battles before, even been seriously injured... but this was different. Seeing the Mansion destroyed, having the fabric of reality altered... he just wanted to make sure Iris was alright.
Becca picked up the baby and Gawain wrapped his arms around both of them. He expected to feel something, one of Iris' many powers, but nothing obvious happened. He didn't care, for a moment. Iris clung to Becca, making snotty noises, and Gawain held them both.
"Yeah" Gawain smiled a tired smile, pushing the nursery door open and walking in quietly. There were beds and cots everywhere. Through a side door, they could see light. He walked in there, finding a tired-looking woman sitting by a small bed where Iris sat, looking very sleepy and very grumpy. Gawain felt a sigh of relief rise from his chest as he saw her. Against all knowledge that things were alright, the battle had taken a toll on him. He needed to see it for himself.
"Hello there, little one" he smiled. Iris' eyes widened and he stood in the bed to reach out her arms. "Mimi!"
"You don't really look that vulnerable. You've got a shield" Gawain grinned. He knew better than to underestimate his wife. "Alright, let's try some direct hits first and see how it goes."
She could strengthen materials to protect herself. It was different from a mutation, but it was not exactly unheard of. The question was how much it improved her defensive abilities, and how it was going to hold up under pressure.
"Danger Room, cue up Simulation Mystic Testing One" Gawain stepped up next to Becca. "I really wasn't gonna start throwing things at you, so I... got someone else to do it. But you're gonna have to protect me too."
The DR simulation shimmered, building a scenario around them. It was a forest clearing with the ruins of an abandoned castle, crumbling walls and fallen blocks of stone all around. Between the trees, small creatures moved and flickered, jumping into the air, zooming around. They were barely larger than a small child, but they all crackled with different kinds of energy: some with crimson flames, some with blue electricity, some blending in with the rocks. "How do you like my elementals?" Gawain grinned over his shoulder.
"F*ck, there's a lot of them." Why did bigots always proliferate like rabbits? Ick. Maya mirrorhopped to the roof to shoot from a better vantage point. "Is the chick from SUPER really coordinating this?!" Maya grumbled through the comms. Sam, on his part, was already on his way... through the air, to the gates, summoning up a line of mirrors. Maya fired a few arrows from the roof. "Did they just bring a whale to a...?" What was this? A gunfight? Partly. An X-mission? Yup. A battle where she was suddenly on the same side as Aura, a dozen witches, and, to reiterate, the head of SUPER?...
Mirrors were summoned, and she had a job to do. "On my way!" Maya merged into an ice mirror and ran through the reflections, hopping out of one of the mirrors by the gates. Mystics did not expect that. Instead of shooting, she grabbed on and yanked her into the mirrorworld. "PSA, WITCHES!" She yelled as she moved over to repeat the move from another mirror. "YOU BREAK THE MIRROR, IT BREAKS YOU. STAY PUT. DON'T SAY I DIDN'T..." down went the second mystic "... WARN YA."
Everything was... in ruins. The Mansion had been obliterated. Yes, they managed to subdue the evil mystics and banish whatever demon was leading them, and turn the portal into a... veil? Mirror was hazy on the details. The more immediate concern was that the place that had been his home for the past fourteen years - the home he shared with his wife and children, family and friends and students - was a hole in the ground, with basically all their possessions gone.
Gawain was too exhausted to even begin to process that.
SUPER picked up the apprehended mystics. The police was making barriers around the disaster zone. The injured were healed, or transferred to Haven. There was a whole lot to do, a lot to take care of. It was the early hours of the morning when Gawain and Becca could finally go to Haven, in desperate need of a few hours of sleep. But only after they made sure Kalos and Iris were alright.
Most kids were sleeping soundly in the makeshift nursery, but when they checked in, they were told Iris was still up, being fussy. Gawain looked over at Becca, looking equally worn and battered as him. "Shall we?"
Iris giggled as she ran down the hallway of the building. At two years old, she was quick on her feet, with wild red hair, and currently sporting colorful polka dots. At two years old, she also understood that she could pass on her polka dots to others in a game of tag, which greatly amused her. In the chaos and commotion generated by all the new people at Haven, it was easy for her to slip away from the makeshift nursery and wander, poking people and giggling as they broke out in colorful dots. The was caught and returned to the nursery multiple times by increasingly exasperated adults, but was not done playing the game yet, so she managed to slip out again.
She had not been to this part of the building yet. There were fewer people to play with. Iris was not afraid of strangers, but, toddling around, she was suddenly feeling sad. When was Mama coming back?...
Suddenly, something was happening. A whole lotta mystics appeared out of nowhere just outside the Mansion grounds. Better than inside, she decided. But too close for comfort anyway. If they were gonna do the teleporting thing, so would she. "Steel, give me some mirrors closer to the gates!"
Another attack on the Mansion. Why did insane bigots always go for the school? Mirror hated everything about this. Especially now, when she had to send her own daughters with Mrs. Taylor-Cervantes to be protected at Haven, along with all the other children and staff too young, or too vulnerable to fight off the Mystic attack. Once they were in safety, it was time to prepare for a siege.
Maya had Sam create ice mirrors around the Mansion - both for easy movement, and because she knew from the fight against Aoife that not all mystic powers extended to the mirrorworld. She'd take any advantage she could get. She was armed and ready, and so were the other X-men and teachers. Becca among them, ready to fight magic with magic.
"One inter-dimensional portal in New York was bad enough. We're not letting another one happen." Maya stated with a frown.
"About a week ago." Maya noted the concern in Liz's eyes. She knew what she was thinking. She sighed, tossing some decorations at random into the basket. It wasn't like Liz was entirely wrong. Maya had her own doubts sometimes, which made her check in on Aoife, as much as she loathed seeing the woman. Every time, Aoife tried to get under her skin. Most of the time she succeeded. "I know what you're thinking. I'm not saying Sam doesn't want to... but he knows if it came to that, he would have to let me do it. That's a language he understands."
