The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>>”Nah, I don’t think so. I mean, don’t get me wrong. You are incredibly sexy in a tie…”
Javi rolled his eyes; he was getting used to his boyfriend's constant compliments and hugs, but sometimes it was still funny to see him distracted by his own train of happy thoughts. He waved a hand in front of Booker's nose as he spaced out.
>>”...anyways, sorry, happy memory. But no. I don’t think you’ll need one.”
"But you do need a shirt" Javier reminded him with a grin, watching as Booker found his way to the closet to put on a button-down. Javier had found some shirts lately that looked dashing on him. Not that it was hard to make him look dashing at all.
>>’Oh it’s this great place I heard about from a coworker. ‘The High Note'. She said that there are spontaneous musical numbers there. Probably some kind of avant-garde theme. But I figured it sounded like a good place to grab a drink before heading to dinner? Afterwards we can get a river-side table at Azure Chef Lounge! I already made the reservations. Sound yummy?”
"As long as we don't have to sing" Javier agreed. He liked the idea of a riverside dinner and good food, and the bar sounded fun too, as long as he could sit quietly at a table away from any spotlights and open mics. Javier did not like performing in front of strangers. But music was nice, as long as someone else was doing it. He waited for Booker to finish getting dressed before they were ready to leave. "Let's hope it's good music."
Date nights were Javier's favorite nights. The past months had been stressful for both of them; Booker had a lot to deal with between Nessa and the library, and Javi was still trying to figure out his own powers, which was not exactly easy while living with an adapted. Really, that was the only downside to dating Booker. And the date nights were definitely the upside.
Javi made sure to dress sharply; as usual he was wearing a vest, and his shirt was a rich deep blue. He poked his head around the hallway corner into the bedroom.
"Do you think I should wear a tie...?"
>>”Javi! I’m so excited, babe! It’s date night!”
Booker bounded over like an excited labrador retriever, and gave Javi a hug. His feet actually left the ground. Javi laughed and hugged his boyfriend. Tonight, they would leave their worries at home. "So, what is this place we are going to?"
>>"Nope, no cops... None of that. Just the strippers, please. Look, I'm fine, kay? I'm not even hurt, just stuck. Get the darn thing offa me, and no fuzz, okay?"
Well, the child had an attitude. And she did not want cops. What kind of a trouble could a child be with the authorities? Was she a runaway of some sort?... She did not look like a runaway. She did sound like someone much older than she looked. Maybe the shock was making her revert to adult movies she had not been supposed to watch. Or something.
The phone rang.
>>"Hurry, if you could. Been stuck for, like, a billion hours, now. Starting to get a little antsy."
"Look, I'm going to get this off of you as soon as I can. But..." Javier crouched down again, waiting for the line to connect, trying to think of putting things in easy terms "The weight on you might be... preventing you from bleeding. I can't lift it until we have an ambulance here to help if that happens. Okay? I promise I won't go anywhere."
Javier trusted Booker with his secrets. He was the kind of guy who would never betray his confidence. The kind of guy superheroes were made of. But secrets, the kind vigilantes had, tended to get other people in trouble, and the last thing he wanted was to get Booker caught up in something.
>>"Then you shouldn’t feel dumb. You gotta do what you gotta do. I’m sorry if I made it sound like it wasn’t a big deal. That’s super amazing, really,”
Javier smiled as Booker hugged him. Maybe they would be okay...
>>”And next time, if you really feel like you need it to be a secret, you don’t have to tell me anything! We’ll use a codeword! Yeah! Like, when I ask you how your day was going, you can say...umm...ugh...oh! You can say, ’Sorry handsome boyfriend! But it was an X kind of day!’ So that way I know you’re talking about X stuff!”
Javier laughed as Booker did one of his goofy superhero poses. His pretense of Javier was generous, his superhero voice being a lot deeper than Javi's would ever get, but the whole thing made him happy, like Booker's cheerfulness always did. The code word was not very... secure, but the idea itself was not bad.
"Alright, handsome boyfriend" he grinned, pressing a kiss to Booker's cheek "I'll let you know next time I am doing secret superhero stuff. Let's go eat something..."
>>"Woah there cowboy. Y'think it was an emergency. Oh right."
The girl must have been pretty out of it. Probably in shock. Javier was surprised she was even conscious, but then again maybe the pressure from the dumpster was... pressing on her nerves or whatever. He was not a doctor. This situation needed a doctor. And someone to lift the dumpster.
>>"Yeah... You got five or so muscle men in there to help lift, cause if not you need to get on the phone. Y'know beggars can't be choosers, but if they could be scantly clad muscle men I wouldn't complain."
The child was... not making a lot of sense. Probably delirious.
"No, it's okay, I can..." he reached for the dumpster, but paused. Vague memories of medical dramas with sexy doctors drifted into his mind (sue him). What if he lifted the dumpster and she bled out right away? Or... whatever? He crouched down, looking at the girl. "I'm going to get this off of you, okay? I promise. But I need to call the ambulance first. A doctor needs to be here when I lift this thing, so they can help you. Alright? Just... hold on for a moment." he pulled out his cellphone to dial 911.
Javier went to work early in the morning. Now that he did not live above the shop anymore, but rather shared a household with Booker (and all the perks that went with that), he had a new-found appreciation for walking to work in the mornings with a cup of coffee and time to think and clear his head. It was a good habit to take on.
Opening up the tailor shop he got to work in the back room. He noted that he'd forgotten to take the trash out the night before; he had been in a bit of a hurry on his way out. Grabbing the full bags he opened up the back door to the alley, hoping to get an early jump on cleaning up.
Except, the dumpster was turned over.
How did that even happen?...
>>"Help please. Please help. Yup. Still here. Still twelve. Big old trash can..."
Javier blinked, paling as he realized the child's voice was coming from under the dumpster. The trash bags hit the ground as he hurried over, taking in the gruesome scene: a little blonde head poking out from under the dumpster, talking... nonsense. She must have been in shock. Javier did not see any blood, but that did not change the fact that holy hell there was a kid under the dumpster!
"SH*T!... Oh my god! Hey. I'm here. What..." how was she even conscious? Was it the adrenaline?... "Don't move! I'll get you out of there... What happened?"
>>”Dude! That’s awesome! What a great opportunity for you! I mean, personally I’ve only met about two of them, but they always seem so nice!”
"Wait wh..."
>>”Nessa dated one you know? Lodestone. Super bubbly, nice girl. Went with me to a Comic Con once. You know, before she cheated on me sis-TAH-Ow!... Ugh, stupid sister landmine junk,”
"Well now I just feel dumb..." Javi muttered. He had been going around with all this secrecy while Nessa had been going around banging X-men? Booker could have given him a heads up, it would have helped with all the anxiety. Apparently the X-men were not as big a secret as he'd thought.
>>”This calls for a celebration! What would you like for dinner? I can make tacos, casserole, or we can order out?”
Booker was just... unstoppable when he got excited. It was hard to stay frustrated when he was around. Javi sighed, walking over to kiss him.
"I'm sorry I was keeping secrets. I hate doing that. It's just... I've never worked for a vigilante group before. There are no clear guidelines." he gave his boyfriend an apologetic look. He was always a bit lost without guidelines. "The suits have a lot of updates, and... I wouldn't want information on the specs getting out. But I know I can trust you." Leave it to Javi to skip over the part where he was designing high-tech gear for superheroes...
Javier had been inside the building since before the doors actually opened. Having a booth in the merchandise hall had its perks, even if it was horribly expensive. He hoped it would pay off. They were expecting a lot of people over the week, and he had been working for months, building up enough stock to show off at the event.
Javier himself was almost underdressed for the occasion - at first sight, anyway. When Booker came up with the idea, he thought it was way too on the nose, but his boyfriend convinced him it was an "inside joke" type thing, and the people who needed to get it would get it. So, unlike his usual dapper self, Javier was dressed in a plaid shirt, a lab coat and glasses, and was wearing a name tag with a science corporation logo that read Dr. Truce Tanner. Booker was greatly amused.
Talking about Booker: as official help at the booth, he was also allowed to come in early and help set up. He'd promised to model some of the cosplay pieces Javier had created (even threatened to dress up in a very skimpy Crypt Robber outfit), but they had an agreement that they would both do their own thing over the week whenever they wanted. Booker was likely to visit a lot more panels and nerd out, while Javi was comfortable with staying at the booth and letting the nerding out come to him, and the costumes he'd designed.
Adjusting his fake glasses, he stood around, waiting for the people to start trickling in.
Javier nodded in understanding. Running a large company had to be exhausting even for people who did not actually make all their wares from their own physical body. The small business aspect probably worked a lot better, and as a buyer, he appreciated the personal contact, and the privacy that came with it. The kind of people he tailored for needed that. It was a matter of life and death.
"Well... Ms. Rova, I'm thoroughly impressed." he said finally offering a hand "I would like to be one of your buyers."
There was a long pause, and Javier tried to mentally prepare himself for whatever may come next. Booker had every right to be upset about being kept in the dark, or his boyfriend acting all secretive when they had just moved in together. It would have been justified for him to yell, or argue, or be disappointed.
But of course, Booker was none of those things.
>>”Oh. Is that all? That’s sweet of you. Why didn’t you just say so? Silly.”
Javier blinked as he was wrapped in a much needed warm hug. How did he deserve someone like Booker? ... How was he gonna answer that?
>>”Which X-Man is it for? Did they come to your shop? You gotta spill the beans now,”
Booker peeled off, and Javier blinked again, still a little flustered.
"It's... uh. Kind of... more than one of them? I have... um, been... making their outfits. It just kinda happened! It's not like I'm on the team or anything. But I was... really scared that I might be... you know. Leaking information or whatever."
There was really no lying to Booker. Javier could not really lie to anyone, ever, (hence him not talking about things at all), but especially not his significant other, who would definitely know, and would be deeply hurt and disappointed by the violation of his trust. Javier swallowed. He'd messed up badly. Was was Booker thinking? He probably thought he had been hiding a whole secret vigilante life. He could tell him the truth, but then... what? How did the X-men handle breaches of secrecy? They would not punish him, surely, but... would their lives be in danger if their identities were compromised? Did Javier just become a liability to New York City's most beloved superheroes?...
>>”I really hope you have more to say than just that, Javi,”
Javier swallowed again, looking utterly, thoroughly miserable.
"I... made it for an X-man." he muttered in a defeated little voice.
>>"Parker? Oh, lord no. I grow them from my skin, but one that size would literally kill me. I can make them up to the size of your average tarantula at best unless I wanna be bedridden for a few weeks."
The more Javier found out about Miss Rova's mutation, the more he understood why she was... strange. Having abilities to thoroughly creep people out, even cause outright panic, was probably not easy to deal with. But also kinda cool. Depending who you asked. Javier, once upon a time having been a scientist in training, was fascinated by the technicalities of it all.
>>"Parker was a pet of a friend. Some other mutant made him a few years ago I think. He came to live with me when my friend left town since I have better than average knowledge of how to keep them healthy."
So it was a... mutant spider made by someone else. Okay.
>>"Anyway... I only brought it up since my mutation allows me to make the parts that I need in order to make the silk. I can crank out a hundred yards of this stuff over a weekend, whereas most of my competitors take weeks to gather up all the silk needed for a few sheets. Some people are just a bit weirded out by the spider bits, though so I like to give warnings."
"Yes I can... see how that would be an issue." How did this all fit into the ethics of animal products? Did it even count as an animal product? Was it vegan?... "Thank you for the disclosure. For what it's worth, I think... I think all this is fascinating. And definitely an amazing resource to work with..." he tilted his head curiously "Are there many people taking you up on your supply?"
Javier was a terrible liar. It also didn't help that he was not prepared to lie at all, and Booker knew him all too well. His boyfriend walked closer, peering down at him with a smirk on his face, which was, on top of everything else, damn distracting up close. Javier knew the cosplay lie was not going to fly, he was just not sure if Booker was annoyed, angry, or disappointed.
>>”Oh...okay… Which Con are you planning to cosplay in?”
Damn.
"I... uh, dunno? The next one we go to?" he ventured, shriveling under Booker's gaze. He was lying, Booker knew he was lying, and Booker knew he knew he knew he was lying... Javier gave up with a defeated sigh and ran a hand over his short-cropped hair.
>>”I feel like the word is familiar but I’m pretty sure I haven’t. It seems like an encounter I would probably remember?”
"Probably" Javi nodded "Mutant powers don't work around them. My... boyfriend is one, and it took some getting used to."
He could only imagine what adapted powers would do to rabbit appendages. He wondered if Booker had ever run into a physical mutant like that. He would have to ask, if he could do it without being awkward...
>>”I can put this away... I don’t want to cause any inconvenience.”
"Sure." Javier nodded towards the corner where the small table was with tea supplies, snacks, and a trash can. He would have offered to do it himself, but two awkward people being polite to each other usually resulted in endless apologies.
>>”Don’t get me wrong, being left alone isn’t always a bad thing. I always found people to be a bit draining. I play video games online sometimes, and I see people at work, but crowds just feel... restricting. Like, do you ever go out and feel like your lungs are being squished and when you finally get home you can breathe? That’s how it feels sometimes.”
"Like everyone is watching you all the time, forming judgments of everything you do, and once you made a bad first impression you will ever be a part of the group? Oh yeah, I know the feeling." Javier nodded with a small smile. Some experiences were common, human or mutant alike.
