Individual Character's full name: Javier Martín Moreno Alias/ Nickname/ Code name: N/A Gender: Male Age: 27 Date of Birth: 10/27/1990 Birthplace/ Home/ Place of origin: New York City Nationality: American Ethnicity/ Cultural Heritage: Hispanic (Spanish/Mexican) Appearance
Hair color and style: Black, usually cropped short Skin Tone: Olive Eye Color: Chocolate brown Height: 5’9” Build: Lean Visible mutation: None Scars/ Tattoos/ Piercings: None Other features: Usually has a beard ranging from five o’clock shadow to short cropped, and if he looks away for two seconds he tends to sprout a fairly respectable moustache. Everyday clothing style: Simple and low-key stylish; Javier likes to blend into the New York crowd. He prefers button-down shirts or plain t-shirts and jackets, comfortable shoes, and jeans. The only extravagance he indulges in is unusual shades of colors – dark reds, mustard yellows, powder blues. He likes to combine a nondescript style with memorable (but not harsh) colors. Uniform: Javier dislikes the idea of uniforms. Sleepwear: Boxers and t-shirts. When too cold, comfortable fuzzy pants Miscellaneous clothing: Javier is slightly far-sighted, so he has a set of plain black-rimmed reading glasses. He only wears them when the light is low, or his eyes are tired. When working in his shop, he usually wears a black shirt with its sleeves rolled up, with a hip satchel that holds pins, measuring tape, scissors, and other sewing supplies.
Character Personality: Javier is quiet, observant, and deeply empathic. He is what most people would label as an introvert. He is friendly to people in general, and very loyal to the few that become his true friends. He has the ability to empathize with others, and usually tries to make their life better in small ways; he shows appreciation through gestures, rather than words, and observes a lot more than what he points out. He is not very talkative, but can carry a friendly conversation as long as he is not pressured to divulge more than he is comfortable with; he is good with small talk one on one, but tends to withdraw into himself in larger crowds, or when put on the spot. In general, he greatly dislikes being in a spotlight of any kind. Javier also has what professionals label GAD – Generalized Anxiety Disorder. It is a form of anxiety that ranges to mild to severe depending on the situation and his mental stamina. Javier worries about things constantly, and tends to imagine the worst possible outcome to any risky endeavor. In general, he is bad at assessing risk, and aims to err on the side of caution – making his day to day activities limited by his own fear of impending disaster. Most people read this as shyness, being a loner, or being “socially impaired.” It does not help that he lives in New York City, where disaster often does happen. Javier is aware of his condition, and has learned several coping mechanisms over the years that help him manage the worst of it. He occasionally gets anxiety attacks, usually triggered by an overwhelming number of possible negative outcomes to a decision. His brain works overtime, constantly assessing the world, and the people, around him – it is both a blessing and a curse. One thing that Javier dislikes greatly is the concept of being a superhero. The few people that know about his powers have repeatedly suggested that he could be one, but the thought of it makes him very uncomfortable. He does not believe he would do a good job, in fact, he believes he would fail, and cause more harm than good. In addition, as a non-violent person Javier is very suspicious of the idea of vigilantism. He does not want to get mixed up in any sort of undercover mutant-hero-vigilante-type thing. And definitely never wants to wear a cape. Hobbies/ Interests: Javier enjoys crafts. The main one is his profession, but beyond that, he also likes to draw, knit, crochet, and embroider. He is interested in fiber arts in general (which is also one of his self-calming coping mechanisms). Job or part time job and description: Javier is a tailor; he runs his own small shop in East Harlem where he does custom work. He designs or modifies outfits for people, and a large part of his business comes from personalizing and modifying work attires for various professionals. He enjoys the challenge of making a perfect outfit for a practical purpose of any kind. Fears/ phobias/ concerns: All of them. (Specifically, afraid of being the center of attention; afraid of causing harm to people, or people close to him suffering harm; afraid of losing control of himself and having an anxiety or panic attack in public; and very, very afraid of accidentally destroying something, or hurting someone, due to his mutation) Special talents: Javier is a talented tailor, and has a good eye for fashion design. He is especially interested in colors. Due to his brief career as a college student, he also has a working knowledge of chemistry and artificial fibers.
Morality Good/ bad/ neutral/ other: Good. Javier is a very empathic person, and therefore it is hard for him to do anything that causes harm to another person, even when some harm would be justified. He tends to try to help people, and stay away from violent activities and situations as much as possible. He avoids conflict, and constantly tries to find ways to make people’s day, or the world they live in, a little bit better without busting out his mutant powers. Mutations Mutation description: Psychologically enhanced strength. To put it simply: Javier’s body is as strong as his mind is, at any given point in time. When he manages to focus his mind on a single task, and achieve complete serenity and certainty that he can do it, he has what qualifies as “Type I Super Strength:” He can lift a school bus (app. 20-25,000lbs) above his head with little difficulty. At its lowest point, Javier has the average strength of a human of his size and build, but with less stamina. Everywhere in-between Javier has varying levels of strength, depending on how sure he is in his ability to complete the task at hand, how focused he is, how low (or high) his general stress and anxiety levels are, and how distracted he is by circumstances or people. The usual level of "super strength" that he can summon up is equal to lifting about 500lbs.
Strengths: - Super Strength: When in peak mental condition, Javier is very, very strong. He can lift large objects, open metal storage containers like tuna cans, kick a car across a street, or punch through a brick wall. - Enhanced Durability: Parallel to mental and physical strength, Javier’s body also adjusts to the durability required to withstand the effects of his strength. That means he will not be hurt or bruised by punching through a brick wall. This works as an effect-counter effect thing: He will not be hurt by the consequences of his own actions (e.g. slamming his hand through the wall of a metal container), but that does not mean he is invulnerable to outside attacks (e.g. being shot in the back) while doing so. - Big Jumps: With enhanced strength come extra momentum; the stronger Javier is mentally and physically, the higher (or farther) he can jump, and land from the same enhanced height without hurting himself. At peak, he can’t leap over a tall building, but can definitely reach third-fourth story windows, and move faster than a human runner by taking longer leaps. - Instant Reaction: Changes in Javier’s mental and physical strength can happen at a moment’s notice. This is both a strength and a weakness: In a dangerous situation, his mutation can kick in to defend him, but if he loses control or mentally freezes up in the middle of a fight, his physical strengths gives out too. Also, because of the instant reaction, Javier does not "hulk out" when using his powers; he has the strength, but does not suddenly gain muscle mass.
Weaknesses and Limitations: - Instant Reaction: Changes in Javier’s mental and physical strength can happen at a moment’s notice. This is both a strength and a weakness: In a dangerous situation, his mutation can kick in to defend him, but if he loses control or mentally freezes up in the middle of a fight, his physical strengths gives out too. - Shadow of a Doubt: It is very hard for Javier to achieve “peak condition.” This is not only due to his GAD, but also due to the basic human element: It is very hard to actually, truly, 100% believe one can do something that seems impossible. The only moments he has ever been able to do it were moments when he did not think before acting, when he did not have time to consider the possible consequences. This makes his actual peak strength very hard to achieve, even in situations where it could be useful. - Anxiety Fatigue: As an average human who does not do physical labor or intensive training, Javier is not very strong in his “normal” everyday setting. In addition, in times when his mental strength is worse than normal, he tends to get tired faster, and have a lower stamina, than a young man his age. This is a direct result of his mutation: When he is strong, he is very strong, but when he is mentally weak, he is physically weaker than average as well. - Limited Attention Span: Even at peak potential, Javier cannot sustain the use of his enhanced strength for long - just like it his hard to maintain a 100% focus or lack of self-doubt on anything in life for long. As of now, he can only hit his strongest for a few minutes. Lower levels of enhanced strength (e.g. carrying a desk alone) can be sustained for longer time periods, but he has never applied enough focus and conviction to do it for more than half an hour. - After using his powers, Javier tends to be mentally and physically exhausted. Mental fatigue is a usual side effect of his GAD to begin with, but after making a heroic effort, fatigue tends to get worse; it makes him sleepy, distracted, or dizzy. Physical Abilities General Physical Capabilities: Javier is healthy, but does not regularly work out, so his “normal” human level strength and stamina are below average. He has good hand-eye coordination and balance, and decent dexterity with his hands. Not very fast and strong, and tires easily, when his mutation is not active. Fighting Style: The few times Javier ever had to fight, his mutation took care of most of the work. He has never trained for fighting at all, so his style is limited to basic punches and kicks, most of them intuitive reactions to someone attacking him. Fighting Style Pros/Cons: Pro: Super strength takes care of most of the work (when he can manage it). Cons: Useless in an actual fight without his powers. And a little bit embarrassing. History Of Your Character Javier is the oldest son of Sancho Martín and Felicia Moreno. His father is from a Mexican-American family, and his mother is originally from Spain; she moved to New York in her early 20s to work on her modeling career. She met with her future husband through her work; Sancho was a tailor and aspiring fashion designer for a larger company that hired Felicia as one of their models. Through her good looks, charisma, and charming personality, Felicia’s star soon began to rise in the fashion industry, despite the breaks she took to give birth to her two sons – Javier first, and Ignacio a year later. Her career soon left her husband’s behind as well; despite his talent, Sancho did not have the drive to rise in the cutthroat world of the fashion industry. He was content with his work, raising his children, and surrounding his wife with loving care. He was, much like his older son, an introvert. He took enjoyment in designing outfits for ordinary people, and running a small tailor shop. He would occasionally create pieces for his wife to wear, but despite her arguments and repeated begging, he did not allow her to tell anyone where she got the unique outfits. It became a bit of a mystery in the fashion world; Felicia Moreno and her mysterious designer. They were both happy with the arrangement. Javier was always a quiet, shy child, with few friends that he was fiercely loyal to. He loved his mother, but he looked up to his father with the admiration that only kindred spirits can have for each other. He learned the basic skills of sewing and drawing early on, spending time in his father’s shop while his brother was off on other endeavors. However, when Javier graduated high school, his parents insisted that he should go to college. He was a clever child and a good student, and despite his lack of social skills, they believed he could have a bright career in any field of his choice. Since Felicia brought a good income to the home, they had the opportunity to send Javier to any college he picked. He ended up going to MIT, where, in a surprising turn from his life so far, he showed talent and interest in Chemistry. College life brought a stark change to his usual world, and he had a hard time fitting in; but over the course of his freshman year, shopping around classes and departments, he found something that inspired him, he decided to major in chemistry, and threw himself into learning about artificial fibers and various high-tech textile materials. Unfortunately, he was still not as good at making friends as he was at learning things, and by his sophomore year, the pressure was starting show. It was the student counselor that first diagnosed him with generalized anxiety, and it only made his naturally introverted personality withdraw further. While he did have some casual friendships, he never really found a romantic relationship, although he managed to define his bi- and demisexuality with the help of the campus’ welcoming (and patient) LGBT+ community. Javier manifested his mutant powers fairly late, during his senior year in college. There was an unexpected explosion in one of the chemistry labs he worked in, and the impact compromised the building structure; the only exit to the lab threatened to cave in, with several people trapped inside, and a gas leak. Javier, without thinking, held up the collapsing part of the doorway long enough for his lab-mates to get out – but his suddenly acquired super strength gave out once it dawned on him that he was a mutant, and saw the other students staring at him with campus security in tow. In the resulting crash, Javier was severely hurt, and spent weeks in the hospital with broken ribs, legs, arms, and various internal injuries. Once he left the hospital, Javier never went back to school. The shock of his powers, as well as their unpredictability, finally made the pressure too much to bear, and he decided to go on a break, and move back to New York. His parents took the change with disappointment, but supported him to the best of their abilities through the transition. Spending time at home again. Javier rediscovered his fondness for his father’s profession, as well as his newfound interest in practical outfits. A year after the incident, he decided not to finish his degree at MIT, and opened his own tailor shop instead. These days, four years later, Javier leads a pretty quiet life. He avoids trouble, runs the other way from monsters, robots, and inter-dimensional visitors, and does not use his powers in any significant way unless absolutely necessary (and even then only if he can summon them up). He is content with his current life, and despite the potential of his mutation, he does not aspire to be in the spotlight in any way.

Javi had three pins between his lips, and another one in his hand, as he carefully folded the back of the dress over, and pinned it into place. The girl standing on the little podium held her arms out, and he noticed that she was holding her breath, too. “Don’t do that” he said, tapping her on the shoulder blade “If I pin you like this, Catalina, you won’t be able to breathe.” “No, but I’ll look great!” the girl grinned, looking at herself in the mirror, smoothing her hands down the sides of her low-cut dress, until she got stuck by a pin “Ow!” “Told you” Javi noted promptly, turning her palm over “Let me see. It’s not bleeding, is it?...” “Like I would get blood on my performance outfit!” the girl pouted down at him. She was breathing again, mostly because of amusement and indignation. Quickly finishing his adjustments, Javi stepped back “Now, go and take this off without taking it apart, okay?” The girl got off the makeshift podium and skittered off with the light, balanced movements of a dancer. Javi made some notes on his notepad before he stashed it in his satchel along with the rest of the pins. “She will look lovely in that” a scratchy, proud voice noted. Javi glanced over at the grandmother sitting in her comfortable armchair. “You make her happy by doing this.” Javi blushed and scratched the back of his neck. Catalina usually carried a conversation all on her own, but now that he was left to his own devices, he felt awkward around the matron. This was the entire reason he did not usually do home visits for work. Too many awkward encounters with strangers. Did she expect more from the outfit than it was able to deliver?... “Are you sure it is going to hold?” Catalina returned in sweatpants and a shirt, and handed the dress over. Javi turned the fabric, and counted the pins. Three, four, five… eight. All were still in place. He checked around the floor to make extra sure he did not drop any of the others either. The family had a very nosy cat. “It is going to hold. Even if you fall. And it will stretch enough for you to move in.” He promised, folding the dress and putting it in a bag. A car pulled up outside, and Catalina ran to the front window. “Abuela! Your delivery’s here!” “I’ll get it.” Javier volunteered immediately, setting his things aside, happy for the chance to get out of the conversation and do something useful. “Are you sure?” the old lady ventured “There should be large boxes. I ordered some new furniture, you know…” “I’ll get them” Javi repeated, walking right out the door. “It’s no bother at all.”
