The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>> “ Why the f*** do you think you can f****n swear at me?”
He didn't. Honestly. Javier never swore at anyone, because he hated confrontation. He was more surprised at himself than angry at the girl. But she was definitely angry at him now.
>>“You f****n think that because I am a f****n mutant that you can-”
Javier blinked at the same time he was shrinking away from her. She was a mutant. Angry, wary, and probably scared of being found out. Javier was not one to out anyone, but he was not sure how to get it through the swearing that he was on her side.
>>“Give me f****n proof that you’re f****n a mutant, f****n right now”
Javier looked around the room in panic. How could he prove his powers without destroying something? And even if he found an option, would his powers even work? They tended to crap out in the worst possible moments. He sighed, trying to keep calm and not spook the girl anymore. He was a mutant, and he could definitely demonstrate his powers on a smaller scale. His gaze fell on a metallic filing cabinet, almost as tall as he was, and very sturdy. Getting up from his chair, he reached one hand under the cabinet, willing his powers to lift it.
Javier froze like a deer in headlights when the reporter approached him. It was not that unusual for fashion writers and even bloggers and the sort to approach people at shows, although the real celebrities of the field didn't usually give interviews just like that. But Javier was small fish, just known enough to members of the fashion world to be recognized, partly because if his mother's international fame, and partly because of his own work. He definitely was not used to interviews, but he also did not know how to say no to one.
"Yes?"
"Who's your model for this outfit?"
Javier blinked.
"Um... you mean, my inspiration?"
"No, the man who wore it on the runway."
Javier's phone pinged in his pocket, but he didn't reach for it, with the microphone pointed at him. He was momentarily at a loss of what to say again. My hot librarian boyfriend? It was not very professional to ask your boyfriend to model for you. Not that Javier was ashamed of dating a man; he was more ashamed of not being able to secure an actual model, and admitting that on the record...
"I noticed that he waved to you from the runway. That was... refreshing" the reporter pressed on in a conspiratorial tone.
"Well he is... new to modeling" Javier noted carefully. Booker chose that moment to pop out the backstage door.
>>”Hiii...”
"Hello!" the reporter perked up, and introduced himself and his fashion website in a hurry "Do you mind if I ask you some questions?"
There was no sign of relief in Julia's expression at the revelation as she turned around again. If anything, she looked angrier, and that made Javier wince again. Did he make a mistake? Did she actually hate mutants, and was offended by the accusation? Really, there was nothing more he could say.
>>“ If I said that I was, would you f****n make the uniform using the measurements that I gave you?”
The measurements. That were clearly wrong for her, even though she insisted she needed them. That was not a medical condition, really. It had to be a power. And yet she was still resisting talking about it, which left Javier fresh out of options, other than making an ill-fitting uniform. And he was proud of his work.
"No, it would f**** make you a uniform that works with your powers." he snapped back, before he could stop himself. The next moment he already shrunk back to his usual self, waiting for her to yell and storm out. This meeting was not going well...
Booker did his walk perfectly. There were cameras flashing along the runway, people looking, observing, judging. People who made a living from attending these events had eyes like hawks, taking in every detail with incredible speed and accuracy. Javier held his breath as Booker walked out, keenly aware of every ripple and murmur in the audience, trying to gauge how they liked the outfit. And Booker. Whether or not the clothes were the real show, people ins the business knew a thing or ten about the models as well. Javier could see some surprised faces as he walked out, but other than that, he did well. Great, even.
Until their eyes met, and Booker's face lit up in one of his genuine, bright smiles.
Javier gaped as the librarian walked off the runway. The smile was barely a flash, but it might as well have been from a camera. Someone behind Javier giggled. There was another murmur in the crowd. Not negative, really, but... they noticed. Javier's heart warmed at the same time his stomach sank.
He made a beeline for the backstage as soon as the show ended, to see how Booker was doing. However, at the door leading backstage he was ambushed by a young reporter who apparently had a keen sense of story.
"Mr. Moreno?"
"Yes?" Javier blinked. He did not like talking to reporters; he had nothing against them, except he was nervous about having to answer questions on the spot.
"Would you mind if I asked a few questions about the show today?"
Apart from occasionally pulling a face or chiming in, Booker busied himself with setting the table, letting his sister and Javier speak. She was taking things in stride, which was good, and Javier really hoped he would not say anything that made him fall out of her good graces. As a rule, he tended to make mistakes when he was nervous, and having a mind-reader around did not exactly help either. He asked about her own job, because he was curious (and a little baffled it never came up before in conversation with Booker.
Asked a question that made sense. Points.
>> ”Well, I am a member of an online production company. I do a few things, honestly. Some small animation and editing work. But mostly, I am an online personality for our content... It mostly amounts to being snarky when I host one of our podcasts and yelling at people as we play video games online for peoples amusement. It’s a very awesome, very weird job.”
Javier blinked, clearly impressed with the job description. It was the polar opposite of what he would be comfortable doing, but it did seem fitting for her.
"So you are... an online celebrity?" he ventured with a small smile, following Booker to the table. "That does sound interesting."
In a way, it did. Someone like Javier would have been hard pressed to handle all the unsolicited feedback, so he felt a pang of admiration for Nessa.
She gave him a break for breathing, and he asked for her name. Maybe if they were on first name terms, she would be less hostile?
>>“ It should f****n be on the paper that I assumed the employer gave you.”
Javi winced again, visibly. Maybe not.
>>“ It’s Julia. See ya”
"Wait." Javier sighed, looking at the paper, the measurements, her clothes, and her general demeanor. It was a wild guess, but an educated one, and besides, if she completely freaked out after, he really had nothing left of this encounter to ruin.
"I'm a mutant." Javier muttered, watching her reaction "I'm just telling you in case you are one too. It's not... awkward, or anything. In case."
Javier had to go take his seat. While at a solo show he would be backstage the whole time, in this case he was expected to sit in the front row with the other designers, so that they could all see (and judge) each other's stuff. He walked away, leaving Booker to his own devices.
>>”I’ll see you. And don’t worry, I’ll shake my moneymaker!... Wait. That’s for strippers. Strut my stuff! That’s what I meant!!”
"Do NOT strip!" Javier called back a warning over his shoulder, before the walked out of the room.
Booker knew better than that, right?
It was unlikely that he was going to be able to actually observe any of the outfits that came out before Booker. The anticipation was too nerve-wrecking for that. Would it go okay? Would Booker feel comfortable? Would people react the right way to the whole thing? Booker was handsome, sure, but he was obviously not a professional model. Which was refreshing, in a way, really. Models always looked like they despised everyone along the runway...
>> “ Super high blood pressure, it causes a lot of swelling”
Part of having GAD was that it made Javier super sensitive to other people's emotions. It was weird enough that initially he thought empathy was his mutant power, rather than strength. While the perception was not exactly superhuman, it was definitely enough to get a weird, awkward feeling when someone was lying to him. Not that he was brave enough to ever call them out on it. He didn't call this girl out either.
"Okay, I can work with that." he nodded, looking at his notes, than back at her "Do you want to tell me your name...?"
Fashion shows were nothing new for Javier. They were basically a staple part of his entire upbringing. It wasn't even the first time one featured his own creation - it was just definitely the first time he asked a boyfriend to model it for him. A boyfriend who was sweet and enthusiastic, but not exactly a professional. Javier was more worried of Booker having a bad experience with this than about how his outfit would be received.
>>”I’ll try to make you proud! I’ll have you know I walk all the time balancing books on my head...and most of time at least half the books remain on top of my head.”’
"Libraries have changed since I've visited one..." Javier chuckled, finally deciding to keep his hands to himself, and stop adjusting things on the suit. There was nothing more to adjust, to he went back to fidgeting with his own sleeves.
>>”You nervous?”
"I'll be fine" Javier assured him with a small smile "That's my secret... I'm always nervous." he added, hoping that the geeky reference would hit its mark. "Alright, I should... go take my seat? See you out there..."
For a moment, the girl seemed to relax at Javier's careful words... just to immediately tense up again when he asked her about her size. Javier mentally kicked himself. He should not have pushed her too far too soon with the questioning.
>>“Why the h*** do you need to know why?!”
He really wanted to get out of this situation. Confrontation was not his strong suit, and his anxiety made him want to run, or to curl up and apologize repeatedly. But he was an adult, and he could not do either without appearing ridiculous. He had to find a way to talk to the girl, without getting either of them into trouble with the management.
"I'm just asking" he said, holding up his hands in a calming motion "Because... uh, I need to know, if I'm gonna make an outfit that is comfortable for you. Sometimes... people have special requirements, and... there might be a better solution to that, design-wise, than a larger size." he looked at her, trying to guess if she understood what he was trying to explain.
>>”It’s always open. Unless it’s locked, then it isn’t.”
Javier looked at the man with the eye patch. He opened the office door, but didn't immediately recognize the tailor. Javier, however, did recognize him - he was one of the X-men. It was not the first time Javier met one of the famous team, but it was still a little... awkward. Like meeting a movie star.
>>”New resident?”
"Um... no." Javi blinked, and quickly offered a hand "Javier Moreno. I made Maya's new costume?"
With the heels and the skirt gone, he costume was definitely an upgrade. But now it probably also looked very different from the rest of the team...
Booker was in a good mood. Javier adjusted the suit and the tie on him, making sure they looked right, and fit him well. The whole point of a fashion show was making things look good while worn. It was no use making stuff that did not work on an actual person.
>>”Pft, with all the boyfriend points I’m earning right now? Forget it... I’m kidding. I’m happy to help. Besides, it’s just walking. And I’m sure the people there will be more inclined to look at your amazing clothes than pay any attention to me.”
Javier blushed at the 'boyfriend' comment. Sure, they were definitely dating, but it was still in the phase of hardly allowing himself to believe it. He busied himself with some last adjustments on the lapels of the suit.
"I doubt that" he chuckled softly. Booker had natural charm, and he was a far cry from the bored, blank faces of professional models on the runway.
>>”In college. But nothing major like ads or TV or anything like that. I was part of a fraternity and we did a fundraiser one year. I was...Mr. September.”
Javier arched an eyebrow at Booker.
"I can imagine how much tailor-made clothing that involved" he noted with a smirk. He was not surprised at all that Booker was in a calendar. He was mildly surprised it did not involve puppies.
"Mother always made it look so easy" he sighed, glancing towards the door that led to the runway. "But I'm sure you'll have fun out there..."
>>“There’s no f****n need. These are my f****n sizes”
The young woman was reacting to his efforts with a lot of hostility. Javier winced again. His logical mind knew that she was probably not angry at him personally at all. Maybe she did not like uniforms? Maybe she had something more important to do, and her employer forced her to be here? Maybe someone had hurt her about her looks before? All were definite possibilities, and yet Javier's anxiety insisted on concluding that she somehow had a problem with him. Specifically. He shrunk a little, trying to look less... well, like a guy.
"I'm sorry, I don't... I didn't mean to assume. If you have special requirements for the uniform, I can work with that. It's part of my job." the tilted his head, a little timidly "Do you want to tell me why you want a larger size? Not that it's a problem at all..."
Instead of responding to his friendly greeting, the girl handed him a piece of paper with a none-too-friendly look. Javier winced; unsolicited hostility always confused him, and put him on edge, immediately jumping to assumptions that he had somehow done something wrong without ever meeting this other person before. He glanced at the numbers on the paper.
>> “Here’s my f****** shirt, pants, and boot size”
Javier blinked, looking between the paper and the girl, not sure what to say for long moments.
"Uh, I'm not sure... what they told you, but I'm here to... uh, take the measurements." he offered, his well-practiced smooth greeting going right out the window, replaced by his usual anxious awkwardness. "And these... look like they would be too big for you?" definitely too big, he did not need the measuring tape to know that. "It only takes a minute. And you don't have to... undress or anything."
