The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Zelda had a big grin as she changed her clothes - he was watching her change. She wouldn't complain about it - she knew she had a nice body and her underwear fit amazingly well with her body sculpture. She even decided to exaggerate her slipping on her pencil skirt, slowly pulling her top over her head, and getting her hair back into position. She was pretty sure he enjoyed the show.
He didn't seem to be upset over her complete objectification of him - she did like his personality, too. He did what he was told, which was nice. She didn't have to worry when they were in the lab about him saying something incriminating, at least. Zelda felt pretty comfortable with him. Despite their rocky start, they seemed to be have had a pretty fun night/soon to be morning.
Once she stepped into the elevator, it was going to be a long ride. The elevators needed to be upgraded - they were still older, but the hospital kept funneling money to improve the medical services. Neglecting the elevator seemed to be a bad way to do business, at least in Zelda's opinion.
>> ”You know, if the cameras in your lab are spying, you definitely just gave the government and the shady corporations quite a show. And for the record, I’m not the only one with a cute *ss.”
She let out a big grin and simply shrugged, "Hey, I mean, I'm sure whoever watches it will love the show anyways." She felt his hand give her bottom a squeeze and that nearly set her off. A good way off. She glanced over to him, debating on what her next action might be. They had only met but this was the 21st century.
So what the hell, why not? Her heartbeat picked up and she decided to take action. She grabbed his button up shirt and pushed him against the wall of the elevator. Her lips were nearly on his, not quite, but her breath went over his lips and skin. Her eyes were locked on his, then she whispered, "You know, I can give you a more... personal show, one where you can see more than just my cute *ss." Her eyes stayed locked on his - she wasn't sure if he really wanted to goall the way or if he was just all talk and no game.

Zelda couldn't help but smile at Nate. She was glad she had impressed him - at least enough to trust her and to keep her work a secret. That was her ultimate goal in showing him all of this - that and to show just how amazing the human and mutant body is. Zelda was a total geek when it come to medicine and she was shameless when it came to giving others that type of knowledge.
>> ”Zel, I don’t think I have the scientific knowledge necessary to have questions. But I think I got what I came for. You’re trying to save the world, and if you do, human and mutantkind might be closer for it. That’s the dream, right?”
Zelda grinned and nodded, "That pretty much sums it up. It could really help a lot of people in the end." She shrugged, "It could also turn out to be a dead end. But you never know unless you try... But now I have a little easier objective on my mind." She gave him a quick wink before stretching a little. She jangled her keys in her hand, thinking about how the night had transpired. Interesting turn of events to say the least. She really wasn't expecting that. She checked her watch and sighed - dang. "No sleep for the wicked, I guess," she muttered under her breath. Now she was glad she had that gum in their car ride earlier.
>> ”Listen, I’m sorry about the horror movie routine back at the Mansion. I was just being protective of the school, but it was still rude as hell. I was figuring, since a certain someone has kept me up this late, maybe you’d be up for some breakfast, coffee, and shameless flirting?”
She chuckled, remembering the voices, the creepy shadow grabbing. She arched her brow, "You could have just asked me what I was doing - it's not like I could have really ran away." She pointed to her heels. "But it's fine - I mean, I was kinda a b*tch to you. I did turn the light off and force you back into human form - I'd wager that wasn't the most comfortable, sudden feeling. Glad I got to see you in your human form before your clothes got on you, at least." She walked over and gave him a soft pat on the back, "alright, cute *ss, breakfast, coffee, and shameless flirting sounds like a great way to start our morning. Let me just change really quick, this is a relatively uncomfortable fabric." She walked over to a closet (as any stereotypical doctor would have, she had also had a couch, set with matching pillows and blankets.)
She looked through a few of her clothing items before setting on this particular outfit. Soft fabric, fit her body well, and really just felt a lot better on her than the other one. She stripped with Nate in the room, really not worried if he saw her - she already saw him naked, so this gave him the opportunity to take a look at her body with her black lacy underwear. Fair is fair, right? Once dressed, she began to walk towards the exit of her office.
She motioned for him to follow her as they exited her laboratory. She locked it with a key. And she definitely gave his butt a little smack when they left the laboratory. Then, it was the trek back to the elevators.

Zelda arched a brow at his defense. Did he not actually tell the mansion? Did they actually not do a background check, actually? Oh well. Not her problem. She could see that he was a good guy - he definitely seemed to have sharpened up his act since his criminal days. It wouldn't have been fair for mistakes in the past to keep him from living in the future. One terrible thing about the criminal justice system of the world - you're trapped the minute you f*ck up. She shook her head, laughing only on the inside. Hey, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do to survive in the world. She could respect that, no matter what his profession was.
>> ”Hey, some people would say I have life experience to share with my students. But I’ll let it slide because it’s not every night I get a compliment from the prettiest doctor-slash-research-associate I know."
She chuckled, giving him a playful grin, "Hey, I never said the criminal turn teacher was a bad thing. Who doesn't love a good redemption story?" Her chuckle turned into a laugh, "I mean, it's good to have someone who has experience about the real world as a teacher." She gave him a genuine smile, a genuine compliment regarding his sketchy past. Most people didn't have the real world experience that lots of people fall into.
She watched him take a look through the microscope. She was completely geeking out at the moment and realized she needed to calm herself down some. This guy probably was able to piece together what she was talking about but probably didn't completely understand. Or maybe that was her god-complex going off. She moved into her office with him and leaned against her desk, motioning for him to join her.
>> ”The world’s lucky you chose to be a wonder doc rather than a mad scientist, but really, your passionate, clever, and incredibly attractive. I’m sure you’ll find a way to a successful trial."
She smiled, enjoying the compliments that were coming from him. She really enjoyed getting praises and she wasn't ashamed to admit it. She gave him a fairly seductive grin, almost as if there was a hunger in her eye too. She was feeling a... certain way towards the man by this point. She sighed, "I hope so... Well, ummm... Do you have any questions?" She wasn't good at the endings it seemed like.

>>”First of all, on behalf of all shadow guys, I take offense to your type casting.”
Zelda laughed, "Sorry, I'm sure you're the cutest one though." She wondered how many criminals he knew or if there was more shadow people. It wasn't very common to see someone with the same abilities, but you never know. Crazier things have happened in the world, like the huge space-time continuum RIP thing going on.
>> ”Yup, I’m the Mansion’s art teacher. It was a good way to translate my life experience as an art forger and thief into something less illegal.”
She smiled, "That's a noble profession - teaching. I'd imagine art is a pretty beautiful thing to teach." Personally, she was terrible at drawing and painting. She had a lot of talents but artistic ones was not one. She could only do basic dancing, no singing for the good of the world, and definitely no art. Granted, she thought she did make some cute stick figures every now and then. "Although, I do gotta say - thief become teacher? Did they run a background check?" She teased him. She knew the mansion wouldn't have hired him if he was still a criminal. Plus, not all criminals are truly bad - we all gotta make do with what life gives us.
>> ”Understood. Don’t say anything incriminating.”
She nodded. She decided to give him the grand tour of her laboratory - but first she needed to put her samples away. She quickly moved over to a large fridge. She quickly got out the coolers and took the lids off. She then punched in a 16 digit code and the refrigerator opened - she then put the samples into the fridge, shutting it. "Most of this equipment is to see down below, some of it is to make edits in their chromosomes," she pointed to a long machine. "Come here, I'll show you something cool." She walked over to a large microscope - it showed the genetic level of the cells. She loaded one of Doc Prof's samples into it and motioned for him to come over.
She had to calibrate it first, but once she could see the white light glowing from his cells, she stepped back. "When you see the white light, that's the portion of the active X-Gene. Pretty amazing. It's different for every mutant." She smiled. She then moved over to a different microscope and pulled another sample out, putting it under another microscope. When he was ready, she'd motion him over. "On the left of this dish, there is an edited X-Gene from David," She winked towards him, hopefully he'd recognize it as Doc Prof.
"It is only the X-Gene - there is no other genetic code from David here, but is has been sliced into a harmless virus cell. You'll notice how small the light is - that's a big problem. It's too weak to actually do anything, at least based on studies with the rats. We'd inject them with x, y, z disease and it barely would make a dent in any introduced diseases. Of course, we had to fry their initial immune system so they had no initial immune system besides the modified virus. On the right side, you'll see it sliced in with another humans DNA. We've experimented with one volunteer human, but it also didn't take. Same issue with the mice. It's the issue all the research has - there's no real way to replicate the X-Gene for mass production & it pretty much doesn't splice the way it's suppose too. Like, they're using viruses as cancer treatments and it's working but this won't take." She spoke quietly, but not enough to really hide it. This was okay since there wasn't any major results - in fact, usually they don't care unless something promising shows up. She felt so bad having to use rats for study, which could easily was shown from her face, but it was for the greater good.
She smiled towards Nate, "It's pretty amazing the technology we have now."

>> ”Thanks. And I’m Nate Holloway. It’s certainly a pleasure, Doctor Grey,”
Zelda nodded and gave him a grin, "It is definitely a pleasure, Nate." She gave him a wink before a little yawn escaped her, "You can just call me Zelda, if you want." If he was going to be her partner in crime now, they mine as well dismiss the formalities.
Zelda could tell from his facial expression that he had become more intrigued. That made Zelda fill with pride. She loved showing off her work and she really isn't able to do that with this research - in fact, unless something comes of it, it's going to be very vague in her resume. It's a bit depressing that more people won't know her work if something happens, but it's for the best. She couldn't risk anyone identities or well beings for this project and she wasn't about to do it for her name to be on a research article - she already had plenty out there, anyways.
>> ”I think I’m gonna be fine. At this point, the police, the feds, and most of the companies in New York know my face. I don’t have much reason to hide these days. You kinda tossed out a guess before, but I was something of a career criminal for a few years.”
She shot him a grin and laughed a bit, "I figured as much. I mean, your a shadow guy. It's not too surprising for you have been involved in a more criminal element in your past." She gave him a wink, teasing him. Hopefully he wouldn't take her too seriously. It was just how her humor was. "Are you a teacher at the school now?"
She scanned her badge at the entrance of the hospital door. She led herself and Nate around a few corridors, greeted a few of the nurses, before they finally arrived at the elevators. Once in them, they began to ride up to the top floor, where the research laboratories were. "No one else will be in my lab," she informed him, so he wouldn't have to worry about his guard. She leaned in very close to him, and whispered in his ear, her minty breath blowing over his ear as she talked. "This is a corporate hospital with several government contracts, so don't say anything loudly that might should be on the hush-hush. When we're back in my car, we can talk openly. There's a dry erase boards located over the room, if you have something you need to say, please write it down and angle it so it doesn't point up towards the ceiling, where the cameras might be are."
She moved in front of him and looked him in the eyes and waited for him to acknowledge this. She didn't think her offices and lab was bugged, but she wasn't sure. The CEO spent a lot of money for this lab of hers and she knew she couldn't trust the upper management. She was pretty surprised they even approved of a relatively secret research grant without asking for more details than what they received.
Ding! She stepped off the elevator and began to lead Nate to her laboratory and office.
Zelda watched the music video a couple times waiting for him. She really wasn't sure if she liked it. She loved the video but the song reminded her of the "I'm too sexy for my shirt." Well, portions of the video did at least.
She jumped a little when he hopped in her car. She quickly turned the music off, not really sure if she wanted someone to know she had been listening to Taylor Swift for past 7 minutes.
>> ”Oh, come on, I didn’t keep you waiting that long,”
She chuckled and gave him a side eye, "Nah, but I wanted to see if you'd freak out if I wasn't at the exit door." She was joking, her grin and tone made it clear. She really wanted to just get her samples into the car where she could begin blasting the A.C. The colder they stayed, the better. She knew they would last for several hours, but she didn't want to risk them. If they spoiled, she would have to do this all over again.
She backed up, turned and stopped at the gate to get them on the highway back to the hospital. She typed in a number Doc Prof gave her and the gates opened. On the road they went.
Zelda only slightly speed towards the hospital - about 25 miles over the posted speed limit. Hopefully Nate wasn't too worried with her speed. "We should be there in 30 minutes, traffic isn't too bad since it's well the middle of the night." She paused, opened a pack of gum, and slipped one in her mouth. "Want one? Minty fresh. By the way, what's your name?" ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once they got to the hospital, Zelda parked in her assigned parking spot. She hopped out of the car, motioning for Nate to follow. She walked around to the back of the car, opened the back, and began to pick her big bag cooler up. She paused, looking at several hoodies and masks in the back seat. "I'm not sure if you want to cover your identity, but... If you want, there's some masks there and a hoodie. It's what I make anyone who comes in to give samples wear, so the cameras don't see them or their facial features and such." She motioned for him to take them if he wanted and began walking towards the entrance to the large hospital.
>> ”You don’t have to tell me twice. I look out for my kind and I’m glad to see you’re looking out for them, too.”
She studied every facial muscle in his face. She nodded and stepped back, "Thank you." That was about all she could say now - she had explained most of everything she could. There really wasn't much else until she could show him the samples and describe them to him. She was trusting a lot in this random guy. She really hoped he wouldn't betray her, her patients, or anyone else in the end. But now, she had no choice but to trust him. Her institution was telling her it was safe to trust him - so that was a plus, at least. She did feel like she needed to clarify something, though, "I look out for everyone, sir. Mutants and humans. Each one of us have our humanity and every day we're losing it by dividing ourselves." She had some pretty strong feelings about the ongoing feud between mutants and humans.
>> ”I reckon I have some time. I’m curious about your research and it’d be irresponsible of me not to keep you company. You never know what kind of shifty people are walking around with questionable lab equipment late at night,”
She nodded, she appreciated the company. It was nice to finally to be able to tell someone, who wasn't a patient, all of this information. She had held it in to keep as many people safe as possible - like her mother. He was a shadow man after all, he could probably handle himself in a fight. That made her feel more comfortable. He seemed to have some type of history, but Zelda couldn't quite put a pin on it. She rolled her eyes playfully, "Yeah, yeah, so shifty." She didn't really disagree with him, it was shady after all. She didn't really have a comeback to that one because of that.
>> ”Feel free to take one last look,”
"Oh, you don't have to tell me twice." She winked and looked over his body one more time, particularly enjoying his tight fitting boxer briefs and muscles. "Cute ass, too," she mumbled. He was very attractive, even more so now that she had gotten her lecturing out of her system. She watched him shift back into his shadow form. That gave her goosebumps again. She couldn't help it, watching his body melt away into shadows. It was amazing but at the same time, weirdish.
>> ”Let me go grab my clothes and I’ll meet you at the exit.”
She nodded and began heading off towards the exit. Once outside, she opened the back of her trunk and put her bags in the backseat. She then got in the driver's seat, cranked the car, and waited. She decided to re-watch Taylor Swifts name song, 'Look What You Made Me Do' while she waited for... What is his name? She never even got his name. Any who, she really wasn't sure if she liked Taylor's new song or not, but the sassiness in it impressed even Zelda.

Zelda's confidence rose as the man sat as he was told and listened, realizing she now had some authority over him. It wasn't like she was getting tied to a damn shadowy hand thing or foot thing now. They were equals. With her slightly above him, at least since he was in his boxer briefs - which Zelda did not mind at all. It was pretty exciting to see a half naked guy in a classroom. Right like in all those movies. Anyways, her mind needed to focus.
>> "A few, but excellent seminar, doctor,”
She chuckled, her posture relaxing even more now that she was no longer in lecture mode. She couldn't help but like the guy now that she could actually see his facial expressions and his posture. She actually felt like they could get along pretty well.
>> ”So… you’re human.”
She nodded a confirmation, "Correct - no X-Gene in me. Strictly normal. However, I am an avid mutant rights supporter. And, of course, believe we should all just get along." She knew that wasn't possible, not with the type of organizations and people that existed in their world, but it was the only view she could have. Whether it ever happened, was another story. The Holocaust was only 80 years ago and there are still Nazi's. It's simply in human and mutant nature. No matter how much medicine or fixes anyone tries, you can't fix nature. She noted his curious expression at her mention of SUPER. She might explain the details she'd dug up once she knew him better but for now, she was going to keep that to herself. After all, she didn't want him to think she was entirely paranoid. Technically, she had no proof such an organization existed.
>> ”And you’re using mutants for research—but only on a voluntary basis, in an ethical way, and for the greater good?”
She nodded another confirmation, "That's right - I would never force anyone or keep their samples without their consent and explicit knowledge regarding the situation. Usually, they come to the hospital but I have a strict dress code I require from them before I let them enter." She paused, her face softening, "You'd be surprised at how many people want to use their abilities to help people but are stopped because of the rest of the jackasses." She cleared her throat, "So, yeah, it's only for the greater good - these type of things can help cure and save humans and mutants alike. But like I said, I'm very careful to make sure no one knows the identities of the volunteers. Doc Prof is a 15 year old boy from Maine who's father drives him down every other month for samples, and his parents work at a local grocery store there." She even had even had fake photos made with celebrities faces all mixed together to help back the story up. "There's also an alert system on my phone that will send a signal to a colleague of mine who will automatically send out a warning to all participants to make sure they're aware if anything is breached."
She took another breath.
>> ”Is that the long and short of it?”
She nodded, and her face grew very serious. She looked him directly in the eyes, needing to know if he could be trusted. "I need you to promise me you will not tell anyone about this. I can tell you want to protect this school and that you're upset over a doctor carrying vials out. Its clear you know how dangerous it could be. And if you have too, please let me know so I can keep these people safe. They're risking so much."
She looked him over one more time, "Nice boxer briefs, by the way." She gave him a wink. "If you want, you can come with me to the hospital to drop these samples off. I can show you some more there. You might want to get some clothes first, though."

She smirked as the silhouette ran over to her. Too bad it was too late.
The next thing she knew she felt something on her hand and she willingly let it flip the light back on. It took a moment for her vision to readjust to the light - it was so dark and the sudden light hurt her eyes a little.
She scanned the shadow man, top to finish. Wow, he was really attractive - those muscles, eyes, the general sculpture of his face. And those boxer briefs. In different circumstances, she would love to have a drink with him. Once she got a feel of him, she looked him directly into the eyes, a slight smirk on her face. Now that he was an actual person, she actually felt a little guilty. When he was just a shadow, she didn't really make the human connection to him.
Now that he was right in front of her face, their eyes locked, it made her feel a bit strange and slightly intimidated. Zelda wasn't one to buckle under pressure though and made no show of being afraid. Of course, on the inside, she was anxiety ridden.
>> ”I sincerely hope your explanation includes a brief tangent justifying your need to be a pain in the ass."
She nodded, "Of course. I asked for you to show your true form, and now you did. Please, sit." She waved to the closest seat to her before she began her tangent. "I'm a Doctor at New York- Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Hospital, as you can tell from my badge. I'm Dr. Gray or Dr. Zelda, whichever you prefer. I'm also a research associate with the hospital." Presuming he sat, she moved and placed her hands on the desk, looking into his face. If not, she continued to look him into the eyes.
"My research is very sensitive- I'm trying to find a way to use the X-Gene in immunology to help prevent or cure diseases or stop fatal gunshot/stab wounds. For example, with Doc Prof, if I examine his blood on the genetic level, it shows what exactly makes his X-Gene tick. If I can replicate that, I and pharmaceutical companies can form treatments for illnesses and such." She hated the pharmaceutical industry though, and it was probably evident by her voice when she said the word. "Anyways, it's not using mutant DNA to find a cure for the X-Gene - in fact, there is no way it could be used to do that. It's strictly to find out if it's possible to use the X-Gene in humans, potentially modify and insert into harmless viruses OR genetically engineer a persons immune system cells to replicate the powers. We may be able to do all of that, but we also have to find out how to mass produce the sample. Which is a whole other issue," She took a deep breath, waving off the last part of her statement.
She arched a brow, "As you can tell, this research could fall into dark hands. That's why I sneak around at 1 am in the morning. That's why I'm making you show yourself. It's why I'm a 'pain in the ass.' This research can potentially save millions of lives but if it falls into the wrong hands, like SUPER, it could cause some serious issues." She stepped back and leaned against the desk behind her. She hadn't realized she mentioned SUPER until after the fact. He probably didn't know much about the group anyways. Not to mention, plenty more to tell him to get his focus off that part. She really didn't want to go into what is technically a conspiracy theory that she just felt was real. "I have several fail safes in place in the event that someone unauthorized tries to access my research - from my supervisors, to the CEO of my company, to any other person who attempts it in. It's also on a closed network, so no hacking can happen. Every person who I get samples from are volunteers and I make extraordinary efforts to ensure their anonymity. I keep no personal information on the individuals. I create a fake name, a fake backstory, fake birthdays, etc. I memorize the real person and the fake person so I don't mix them up. If anyone somehow got into my records, they'll find a bunch of dead ends." They would have the samples, of course, and the genetic imprint. However, this would be useless for anyone unless they already had a copy of their DNA/blood. She wasn't about to mention that to him though.

Zelda clearly had a look of frustration. She really needed to deal with this guy, ASAP. He didn't know she wasn't a mutant and he didn't know really anything about her. The only thing she did know was that he clearly would defend the privacy and medical information of the students and faculty of the Mansion, which made him relatively okay in her eyes. Except for the whole trapping her.
>> ”I have a colorful past, but that doesn’t change the fact that I’m the one who works here, and therefore, the one making demands.”
She shrugged, "I'm the one with the information you're wanting. Not to my fault if you're too lousy to make a deal."
>> ”You’d think he’d consider giving the rest of us a warning…”
She only barely heard his mumble, but she heard something about 'giving' and 'warning.' "Look, DocProf is looking out for you guys. He cares and would never endanger the school, the students, or the faculty here." It came out sincere. She knew that was the truth, so she nodded a confirmation to him with a smile. That was actually the first smile she even gave him. She stared right into his shallow eye areas. She thought it was his eyes, at least. If there was only some way she could get this over with faster than later.
DocProf was an amazing guy. He had given his blood, DNA samples, all sorts of things to help Zelda further medicine. He even brought in his expertise. Once she convinced him to help her with her research, she nearly shouted in joy. He was a respected healer and doctor.
>> "Okay, okay, fine."
She nodded, "Thanks." She followed the shadow man dutifully. He had her wrist, so there was no point in trying to escape now. She sighed, scratching the back of her head with her free arm. She couldn't help it but her face quickly turned more inquisitive as he carefully leaned around the entrance of the classroom. Huh. Shadows. Light and shadows. Ohhh. Like a light bulb, Zelda had a plan. It wasn't an escape plan because she couldn't see in the dark, but it would see if her hypothesis about the shadow man was true. But first, she needed to get the door closed and make sure she's close enough to the light switch.
She followed him only slightly into the room and waited until he closed the door. She turned back and made sure it was locked.
She looked like she was going for one of the upper far right seats, but stopped quickly near the light switch. She watched the shadow man lean against the students desks. She had no idea who Rebecca was, so she didn't waste anytime with responding to his comment. "I can't wait to see this, actually," She replied, before quickly reaching over and flipping the light switch off. She needed to leave it off for a few moments, so she moved back against the wall the best she could. She probably needed to reassure him so he wouldn't completely freak out, "Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere. I'll still tell you everything." But she wasn't quite ready to turn the light back on yet.

Celeste held firm, her sassy posture not budging. She could get why this guy was nervous, but he could have at least just asked her about it. That would be a lot more preferred than becoming a shadow, stalking her, scaring her out of her wits mind, and then finally appearing - in shadow form. That is what made her so uncooperative and angry, at least that is what she was telling herself. Really, Zelda was terrified that somehow the government or some shady organization would get involved and find her research & locate the individuals. It would be hard for them to do so with all of her safety precautions, but anything can happen. All they need is a mutant with good hacking skills and there really isn't much she could do. But she could save so many lives with her research.
>> ”I don’t know; I’ve known some pretty s****y thieves in my day."
She nodded her agreement, "That doesn't surprise me. Does it take one to know one? You kind of have a built in advantage though, don't you? Being a shadow and everything. Why don't you show your actual self?" She dared him. She really needed to make a decision: lie or confess.
Zelda could see his shadowy posture relax a little, which in turn made her relax some. The tensions between the two adults simmered a little, which was a good thing. She rubbed her temples, frustrated that she had to even deal with this guy. But ultimately, was he someone she could trust with her secret? And not to mention, DocProf since he would have to be explained as well?
>> ”Okay, you’re a doctor. Admittedly impressive. But why would a doctor come to take medical samples from a school for mutants in the middle of the night without giving the goddamn staff a heads up?”
She let out a sheepish grin, enjoying the praise. She was very proud of being a doctor. "Top of my class, fellowships, and nearly scored perfect on my boards. Not to brag or anything." She sighed, "I did give a staff member a heads up - I have been here a few times before. There's no other reason than DocProf to know I'm coming." She paused, biting her lip for a moment. She was going to trust this guy. He was worried about the samples being used for a more nefarious purpose. That made her relax tremendously. That means he wouldn't tattle to SUPER, if he even knew what that was. Even she wasn't all that sure.
"I'll tell you why, but we need to go somewhere quiet where no one else can hear us. I don't want to risk anyone's safety and plausible deniability is a tremendously safe argument. While probably not, it could also be dangerous for you to know. I'm a little paranoid about it," she shrugged, "but you never know."
Zelda waited for a reaction, knowing it wouldn't take long for it/him/her whatever to say something again. She was trying to channel all her anxiety about the situation into anger. Maybe she could deck whoever it was? She could presume it was a mutant, and most likely was, so it could be... Well, anything. Maybe they can change the location of their voice? Maybe they were a lizard with normal sounding voice? A fly? She sighed, deciding to wait.
She felt something on her ankle and her eyes went wide. She watched, agape, as the man began to form in front of her. She let out a small scream before calming down. If he was going to hurt her, he would have already. It's not like she had any defenses at this point. It was strange, watching the shadow man slowly appear as his body regained a silhouette shape. There had to be some type of molecular changes in his body to enable such a change - it would be great if she could get a sample of his blood, too. Too bad she was out of clean needles and she felt confident that DocProf had already went to bed. Maybe.
It made Zelda have goosebumps as she watched him. She eyed him down, arching one eyebrow. Shadows? It looked like he could merge into the shadows and out, but he was keeping part of his foot/leg thing wrapped around her. Interesting mutation.
>> ”And what kind of ‘donation’ does someone sneak into a Mansion for at one in the morning?”
Zelda took a deep breath, swallowing her fear. It was a good thing she had always been exposed to mutants, even when she was a kid. Otherwise, she would probably be a lot more terrified. She would admit that it wasn't the most innocent looking situation but it was still dumb. She pulled her hoodie off of her and put it into other bag, which was more or less her purse. Her doctor's badge from the hospital was hanging from the pocket on her right breast. She folded her arms and arched her brow, "You call wearing heels sneaking? For a shadow man, I'd expect a little better guess," she retorted. She really was just trying to buy herself some time to make up an excuse or debating if she should be honest - he might work here? She couldn't really tell. He looked like, well, a shadow. Definitely wasn't a student. It might be safe for him to know her secret but she didn't know that yet.
Zelda didn’t like this instinctual feeling she had going on. Like someone’s eyes were on her, watching her every move. She could feel her heart beat begin to race, her skin feeling a little clammy. It was time to get out of here, as soon as possible. Zelda knew she had a relatively long time before the ice melted but the sooner she got it placed in her little secured fridge at the hospital, the better. She did notice she was getting even more careless – she was moving faster. She could see the large back exit now, but it was down a large hallway. Why did this place have so many hallways? And why did she keep seeing things in the corner of her eyes, like shadows? Maybe this was just the beginning of a really bad dream?
>> ”This feels hypocritical, but are those your bottles? You seem… skittish. Paranoid. Certainly not innocent.”
Zelda stopped, she was only about halfway to the exit. She took a deep breath, calming her body. “Yeah, well, if a voice started talking to you when you can’t see them wouldn’t you be a little skittish and paranoid? Sudden onset schizophrenia isn’t pretty common. And yes, they were donated to me by a very important person.” She shot back towards… Wherever, actually. What did he mean hypocritical? She had no idea where the voice came from and really didn’t care at this point. She was annoyed, frightened, and startled but was ready to get this over with. She thought about finding a bathroom and just destroying the samples and coming back another time, but she was so close to the exit that she paused.
Zelda was doing her best to be as quiet as possible as she sneaked through the hallway. Her heels, however, still made their natural noises. She cursed under her breath, realizing how dumb it was for her to not have a pair of sneakers in her car. She has a black hoodie and all sorts of other things, but not a pair of sneakers? Dumb.
>> ”Someone clearly doesn’t know when office hours are.”
Zelda let out a small scream, her right hand covering her mouth quickly. Her body jolted upwards a little and her hairs stood on end. Holy Moly, what was that? It sounded loud enough to be right behind her She looked around her surroundings carefully, then slowly whispered, “Who’s there?” It wasn’t until then that she realized she had heard the clanking of glass in her coolers. Oh no. Her mother had warned her not to do any crazy research, crazy stuff or it would come back to bite her. And look at the situation she was in now.
Kneeling down on the ground, she opened the large cooler bagand took the actual coolers out. Most of the vials were fine, but it looked like a few slipped out of the ice and hit each other. She examined each vial carefully. No cracks, nothing shattered. She gave a sigh a relief, before packing them back into the cooler. Then she placed them back in her larger bag and put it on her shoulder.
“What was that noise? Why are you still here?” Doc Prof must have heard her little scream, his head sticking out of the infirmary – “You need to go and don’t be loud. Crazy girl, wearing heels to a recon mission.” He shook his head at her and shut the door again, clearly frustrated with Zelda's little scared performance.
She grumbled, “Well, yeah, easy for the guy to say.” Isn’t this what all the ladies do in the spy movies? She sighed. Spy movies wasn’t real life and someone was watching her. She didn’t know why, who, or how she even saw her to begin with.
She slowly began walking towards the exit again. She made a couple turns here and there. She checked her time and wrinkled her nose. This sneaking business took way too long. Not to mention, she was actually a little sleepy.
She had a mission to complete and she would complete it no matter what. Even if she could feel someone watching her. Her skin was tingly all over, her fight or flight clearly wanted to go into the flight part of her instincts. Maybe if she just started running it wouldn’t create too much noise?
