The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It was important when working with mutants not to judge them solely on their mutation. Yes, Michael had a powerhouse mutation, but that did not mean his skillset exclusively made him a hammer. She had not committed to what was within his capabilities, though the Texas muscleman did not fit the typical subtlety and subterfuge archetypes.
Thankfully, being well-trained made up the difference between expectations and reality. ”Sounds like you’ve got plenty of talents and a track record. I’ll be combing through any official records and making sure SUPER and the other agencies see a clean version of that.” Though she was willing to bet plenty of those records were already buried and redtaped.
Consistent with reports, Michael apparently returned to a younger age with the same powers that may have evolved at an older age. ”While we’re not going to tip our hand about you or Gage’s mutation, you will be given the resources and opportunities to figure out what limits you have now.” With a relaxed smirk, she added, ”Sounds like you’re planning on putting in good work for me, so it’s the least we can do.”

Despite the direction she was trying to help lead SUPER toward, Sabine Sang was not an optimist by trade. They had to improve their public image and the organization needed to move away from their less humane practices of old, but they were not a humanitarian organization. That was Haven’s realm, and SUPER had real jobs to do that could get messy. They had to know when it was time to make hard choices and push past comfort to do what was necessary.
When things needed to get messy, they would want someone on the staff not squeamish about making those tough choices. With the de-ager being a risky rogue element, he was the right choice. Alive was the goal; not the requirement.
While Sabine was sure that was not Wick’s preference, he did not argue. Nice to see training and discipline won out. He was focused on getting the job done. ”We don’t have confirmation on the universe of origin for the mutant. This mission is high priority, so you can requisition equipment or supplies you feel you require. This includes needs for containment, capture, or surveillance. If you can get information on the ‘how’ of this process, that would be just grand. If you feel the need for assistance, we can get another agent on hand for you.” Somehow she doubted Wick would take that option. He was not a team-operations type of guy.
The trickier matter was how the serum was spread. They had volunteers that let themselves be tested, which helped. Not as much as an unwilling volunteer might have, but dissecting people was wrong. New SUPER policy, apparently. ”Now that we’ve seen samples of the serum, we were able to test contaminated parties. All had particles swapped from their cheeks and detected from their breath. The main problem is that some had those particles detected in their blood samples and others did not. We don’t know if that’s an example of the gas seeping in through the skin or a more direct method of contamination, but be prepared for anything, Agent.”

Sabine felt comfortable when she was not herself. In her civilian life, being a social mirror. It comforted people in social settings, but SUPER was not the civilian world. Not everyone on staff was trained in psychology, because it was not relevant to some agents and most soldiers. Sabine disagreed; in her eyes, knowing how people worked would ideally be mandatory, but some people brought too much value in other ways.
Wick… he was not one of those people. He was not a social creature, but Sabine knew better than to assume he did not understand people. He was a reader, noting the way she expressed herself. That negated her social advantages, because if he read her reflecting him, there was no lowering of his guard. She would still do it out of habit, because what else was she to do?
The agent was stern, but he was a quick study. With some of her newbies pushing at her patience, it was nice briefing someone who did not need hand-holding or a synopsis of the documents they were handed.
Competence and rationality were helpful in an agent, but uncomfortable when that agent was aware of the situation he was in with the new SUPER. Her brief smile was formal, followed up with a shrug of the shoulder. ”You’re a loyal agent who is good at his job. Why would SUPER choose to not use you?” Much of Wick’s record was written in red, but those were not the only jobs he was equipped for. ”We all find our place in a new world, Agent.”
At the very least, Wick was not going to refuse work. ”It has now been brought to our attention that the cause of the de-aging phenomenon was lab-created, whereas previously we assumed it to be a rogue mutant." It was also an unauthorized experiment from a defunct SUPER lab, but those pieces of intel were not relevant to the task at hand now. "As far as we can tell, the serum created was derived from a mutant, but can still affect humans and adapteds." It was marvelous science and an absolute danger to society. Very much old SUPER.
"The serum was taken from the lab it was created in, so we now believe these events have been malicious. Whoever is causing this, we need them tracked down and brought in. Alive, ideally,” she felt the need to clarify, keeping a dry tone throughout her run-down.

Sabine was “benefitting” from Kristoph’s promotion, if you could call the mandatory custody of several major organizational responsibilities a benefit. As a senior agent and a trusted asset of her former partner, Sabine went from being a subtle sneak in a crowd to the woman responsible for aspects of personnel management and public relations. Well, putting out fires; there were probably other parts of public relations she was thankfully not doing; all the parts that were not flammable, she guessed.
This also put her in the awkward position of managing people with similar seniority and experience, not all of whom were keen on being managed. This was especially true of the agents who thrived in the less savory AV era. It was hard not to feel Agent Wick was one of the ones thriving.
The man was skilled; one of the most reliable field agents they had, which Sabine did not say lightly since she also contended for that praise before this pseudo-promotion. He was also part of the oldest of old guard, and given the issues she was managing with Noel, Michael, and Kent, that still made her nervous.
Nervousness was not an excuse to do her job poorly, and Agent Tristin Wick was an asset. He had proven incredibly loyal over the years to SUPER, and she could not inherently start treating that as a bad thing or a warning label. If anything, the current job of tracking down the age-altering chemical terrorist fit his skillset and would be a good way to test his ability to follow the new modus operandi.
Taking one last moment to focus herself, Sabine opened the door to a briefing room. The place was drab, which was fitting. As a social mirror, she dictated her energy to reflect who she was meeting with and Tristin was a no-frills man. Direct, efficient, and to a degree, robotic. For that reason, her smile was brief. ”Thank you for making time for this briefing, Agent Wick. I’d hope you’ve taken the time waiting for me to peruse the dossier?”

It took time and effort, but Sveta was playing nice by her standards. They were speaking productively by the time Sabine’s confit de canard arrived. She was glad to see it arrive at the table, pausing their conversation for privacy’s sake. The duck and roasted potatoes would help soak up the wine bottle they were working through quickly.
Sabine was not particular about the identity of their potential spy, but she did have requirements. Unfortunately, it sounded like Sveta had no one she could suggest off the top of her head. Maybe Haven was also working on its own recruitment challenges. ”By all means, take your time. I don’t think they’ll be putting heads on pikes in the next ten business days.” At the moment, the more controlled voices were still in power, though they did not want to rest on their laurels.
”If you can find someone competent and not swayed by appeals to power or rhetoric, let me know,” she requested, wanting to know sooner rather than later if they could get another few bodies in the bullpen working on this secret agenda. ”In the meantime, does your organization have the means to do a quiet audit? I don’t want to act like I know everything about Haven, but I’m also not going to insult you by playing dumb; your organization has spent the last few years developing very strong relationships with some important companies.” At least some of that was public record.
Sabine was willing to bet plenty was not. ”I don’t need or want details, particularly with this. But do you feel like you have enough influence over one of those ‘relationships’ to get something like this done without drawing too much attention or raising suspicions?” Just sending confidential monetary records to an unknown accounting firm sounded like a recipe for a whistle-blower, or worse, someone who would report findings back to SUPER.

Burnout was common with agents. Not everyone could make work their entire lives without losing their sanity, their morals, or their motivation. Not that Sabine was a good example of work-life balance, but she felt it important for her agents to do as she said, not as she did. Kent seemed like the kind of guy who had the right attitude not to drown himself in work. That was great if he did the caliber of work she had heard from his previous supervisors, but only time would tell how true the reports were. A nice guy like this might get generous reports.
Michael, Noel, Kent. Three aces she was keeping in her hand, but all unique personalities. She knew Noel and Michael meshed well, but she was interested to see how Kent handled them.
Being personnel did not sound like it would be the problem, at least not from Kent’s end. ”We’re not so clandestined that people don’t need some human connection. I’m sure you’ll make yourself known on the intraoffice chat channels. Based on your attitude, I won’t be surprised when you’re president of all our social groups by next week.”
They made their way to the open door to the bullpen, but Kent stopped her. She was glad he did, because she did not want to answer this on the floor. ”Noel and Ranger will know. Anyone else I send you into the field with will be curated carefully. Try to keep power usage in the field to a minimum, but at the end of the day, your life and the job are both more important.” She did not want to handcuff him completely. ”If your mutation is exposed to another party, I’ll handle it accordingly. The plan is to keep most of the organization unaware of your mutation for the time being, but I am always prepared for my plans to go to s**t, so if the choice is secrecy or death, you’re still more useful to me with a pulse, Beyers.”
A de-aged amnesiac embedded agent. How did Sabine keep finding problems like this? What did she do to piss off some cosmic entity? Well, beyond being complicit in a morally questionable government organization.
Actually, that was probably fair.
It would have been great to get a name, but Sabine could understand maintaining plausible deniability if Michael or Noel were caught. Maybe that was how and why they ended up de-aged? A secret worth keeping?
As expected of a potential spy in Haven, Michael was a mutant. It sounded like he had plenty of history working with the government, but in the way where it’s not shocking he might lack records. Nice to see the government was the government, whatever world you were in.
”A super soldier and a human truth test,” Sabine mused aloud, contemplating the assets dropped on her lap. ”Take this as no offense, but she sounds like more of a spy than you. Though maybe you’re sneakier than you let on.” That was hard to see, though. A combat mutation on a guy who was willing to give her actionable information. Why send in a soldier to be a spy?
There were threads to tug on here. ”Well, without you on record, inputting you into the system provides us with a surprising amount of flexibility. I can keep your mutations confidential for the time being; I don’t want to burden you with office politics on day one, but let’s just say you will find more leeway as a potential human than a potential mutant when it comes to figuring out what happened to you.” He clearly had the experience to know how his mutant identity could impact his work. And he would be more useful to her if that was kept a secret to some degree.
”If you’re comfortable with your mutation being need to know, we can still put it to work behind the scenes.” Despite knowing the men posted outside were on her short list of trusted personnel, she still kept her voice low. ”How fast and strong are we talking about? If, hypothetically, I needed some off-site facilities raided, are you a strike crew leader, or are you the strike crew?” Mutant power levels were all over the place, and while that always concerned Sabine, she had to acknowledge when it was useful to have a possible one-man army on her side.

Sabine hoped her efforts to clean up SUPER were not all for naught, because it was an exhausting amount of effort to get the plan off the ground. She had to hire agents personally, she was using questionable assets like Noel and Michael, and she was more or less planning mild treason with Haven. If, after all that, she was still working for an organization that reveled in human rights violations, she was going to be pretty miffed.
It was unfair to keep Kent’s power confidential. Most mutants she interacted with held a sense of pride when it came to their mutation. It was part of who they were, like a beautiful smile or handgun marksmanship. (Okay, she had to relate to the mindset somehow, right?) Even worse, she was trying to position him within a group that would see him chased out of SUPER and potentially America. Fortunately, Kent understood the role she was asking him to play and the need to be discrete.
Her new agent was on board, and he was having fun with it. No shame in that if he kept the work serious. ”Well, if you clear out the organization, I’ll keep you in mind when the SUPER talent show and variety hour comes around.” Sure, that did not exist yet, but maybe in the friendlier, more approachable SUPER?
”Noel and Ranger are their names. Well, Ranger is his codename. He just seems to go by it. Ranger is easy enough. Surprisingly polite guy. Talking about guns or Texas works. As for Noel… well, don’t lie. That’s my advice.” She was not going to clarify Noel’s mutation; Kent could figure that out on his own.
With contacts established for him to look into, Sabine stood from her seat and shuffled around her desk. ”Of course. Junior Agents don’t get nifty offices, but having you out on the floor with the other agents should help you make friends.” Sure, that did involve spying on some of them, but if he figured out the creeps, he was free to befriend the good agents, assuming they had some left.
Leading him out of the office so they could take the halls toward the open floor for agents to get their work done. ”So setting aside business for a bit, are you excited to get to know the city? We keep busy, but even SUPER Agents get downtime. Of all the cities to end up in, it’s hard to do better than New York, right?” Kent was still young, and there was little you could not do with your life in America’s most extra city.
Svetlana had her own experience with the X-Men, so she understood the team was not known for their subtle tact. When Sabine needed a sledgehammer, she’d call the X-Men. It was her hope that Haven could be a scalpel. They were also a pragmatic organization, from what she researched. That was much easier to deal with than a group of idealists in her eyes.
It was a pipe dream to expect she would find genuine allies within Haven, particularly with Svetlana, who clearly associated Sabine as a willing accomplice to her own kidnapping. It was not an unfair assessment. Still, she could see Sveta understanding the practical need Sabine had for some third-party involvement.
And really, who did not want to install a spy in a government organization they did not trust? In Sabine’s eyes, this was the easiest part of the sell. ”Trust me, I’m still learning the ropes of openly traitorous acts. We can learn this new experience together.”
It was not difficult picturing what Sabine needed out of a potential spy. She thought through her mental list, since she would not dare write this plan down. ”I was looking for an agent. If new administrators came in and started buddying up with high-risk groups, that might set off red flags. An agent is a more natural target for recruitment. Investigative instincts, combat training would be a plus, but we have trained new recruits up, so it’s not necessary.”
Of course, those were just basics for an agent, and Sabine could train up anything else they needed. They key qualifications came with someone not getting themselves busted. ”More importantly, I need someone who can be unassuming and approachable, and who is not going to flinch at things that make them uncomfortable. Trying to suss out extremists gets harder when you can’t conceal your disgust.” And there may be disgusting viewpoints shared if this spy infiltrated the right groups. ”If your spy is a mutant, we’ll need them to have a non-physical mutation, of course, because I doubt human supremacists are going to welcome a winged-woman into the fold.”

At least the two runaways were not planning on dropping off the grid, at least according to Michael. That was an easy thing to say after you were found, but they showed no signs of making a grand escape. They were just… well, hanging out? Not exactly plotting their careful desertion.
It was a tenuous start, but she was comfortable enough with the premise of their meeting to accept a firm handshake. He was willing to talk to her and she was willing to listen, because whoever his so-called-contact was before her, they were suspicious or flat-out shady. Perfect lead for her to chase.
As expected from a de-aged person, Michael lacked many of his own details, but he did give her some insight into his experience. Extensive military background. The CAG was no joke; she had a capable asset on her hands. Yes, he was not as covert as most of her key assets, but she could put someone with skills like his to use.
This man could not speak for Noel, but Sabine hoped she could get them both on the same page; her page. Michael was willing to stick around and he even had an interesting tidbit to share. Embedded in Haven of all places? ”What billion dollar international enterprise doesn’t?” she asked rhetorically, smirking at the thought of Sveta hearing this conversation. She… was going to have to navigate that if they really did want to have a cooperative relationship. It’s certainly interesting, though I might be more interested to find out who had you embedded in there.” That had “rogue cell” written all over it if true.
That also brought about another important question upon reflection. ”Haven’s a fairly mutant-focused organization. Are you and Gage both mutants? Or were they taking on buff human receptionists to fill a quota?”
Ever since SUPER made a push to integrate themselves into this universe, recruitment was up. With that, Sabine found herself constantly dealing with unfamiliar faces, generally quite young for agents. For someone who was good at committing faces to memory, this was a new and annoying experience.
Documentation on Hunter and Gage was limited, which meant they were potential opportunities for Sabine. She had to be cautious though; she had enemies inside and outside of SUPER. Without research, she had to use her judgment and watch the young man carefully.
Michael, to his credit, was quick with his answers. Too quick, earning a raised eyebrow from Sabine. He was not expecting to get away with a cheeky non-answer, right?
Thankfully, no. Claiming her own seat, she studied him carefully as he offered up an explanation. Sabine tried not to tip off her surprise when she found out about the de-aging of Michael and Noel. It explained why she was coming up with dead ends in her search through personnel files.
They were being asked to go to a different safehouse location before dropping off the grid. He assumed she was the one to arrange the meeting, and she wished that were true. Who exactly was handling these agents? It dawned on her how lucky she was; they were discovered by one of her personal colleagues who transferred out to the Texas branch office. Had he not been the one to find them, who would have? She had not seen any reports of missing agents.
”Not a fan of being caught with your pants down, I take it.” Whether they were trying to run off or just figure out where they stood, it was hard to stay off SUPER's radar forever. ”Senior Agent Sabine Sang. And no, I wasn’t the one who was going to meet you. That said, until we piece things together here, you’re dealing with me now.”
Looking over her shoulder to the personnel that accompanied her, she waved them off to stand outside the door of the room, leaving her alone with the mystery man. ”We’re aware of the de-aging phenomenon. It’s a problem we’re looking into. It explains a lot, but still… your files, SUPER or otherwise, are limited. I also don’t like playing at a disadvantage, but I guess that’s where we’re at, Agent.”
Sighing, Sabine propped her elbow on a nearby table and rested her chin against her knuckles as she inspected Michael. ”I’m glad to help you two fill in gaps where possible, but I have to ask: are you planning on working with me or running off to goddamn Moscow?” Admittedly, more dramatic than hopping an Amtrak, but she had no reason to underestimate him yet.

Sabine did not pick allies lightly. Her trust had to be placed selectively and for now, it had to remain outside of the SUPER establishment. It was why she kept the hiring of Agent Byers close to the chest. She ran through his record closely, and yes, she picked him because he was a mutant who could pass as a human.
Of course, she was not going to force him into her internal affairs, but based on what she had seen of him she was confident he would be on board. Not only was he ready to jump into the thick of it, his mind was firing off questions to catch up. Him and his notebook and pen.
Yep. She hired a boy scout.
They would waste no time, then. ”There are some personnel I consider suspect, mostly based on mission history and associations. They’ll be the ones you’ll be subtly testing. There are also two agents I’ll be bringing into the fold, and when I’ve properly vetted them, you’ll be coordinating together.”
Sabine sighed, wanting to get full-disclosure out of the way early. ”Currently, our records for you have certain details redacted-- notably, your medical history. Beyond myself and certain trusted personnel, your mutation is not a matter of record and I would like to keep that way.”
Folding one arm over the other, Sabine met Kent’s eyes. ”Are you comfortable posing as a human agent in the offices, and if necessary, portraying yourself as a human-supremacist? For all your accolades, I couldn’t quite judge your acting chops based on your records.” It was a joke, but those juicy details were on her record, after all.

It was clear Sveta had strong opinions about SUPER being tied into the government of the country. To an extent, Sabine could not blame her. Her lack of a quippy remark did suggest she recognized that her problems were not just going to go away because Sabine was convinced to pick up an idealist mindset at forty. Dismantling a government organization was not easy, not even for a group like Haven that seemed to have their hands in more than they let on.
The agent did not care if Sveta believed in her sincerity if she could at least believe in her motives. They were not two women on the same side, but they had a chance to be on the same page with parallel goals.
The downing of a wine glass suggested Sveta was resigning herself to being part of this conversation. Progress.
Sveta had questions, and Sabine smirked and latched onto the last one first. ”Well, I’m sure there will be things we ask for the X-Men’s help with if the time comes to it, assuming they can stomach getting in bed with monsters.” Sabine knew cracking that nut might require a different approach or opportunity. ”When we have facilities to raid, that sounds like a job for them, but their team seems more equipped for those big flashy problems.” Hence the silly costumes.
Instead, Sabine’s present concern was far more subtle. ”Weeding out the bad ones. You hit the nail on the head there. I have some new blood coming in that I hand-picked, but anyone who was brought in on the other side, or by agents of the other side are variables. Everyone knows me, so it would be obvious if I start probing around our agency taking polls on mutant-approval.” She was a good actress, but no amount of acting was going to make covert rogue groups trust the intentions of an established senior agent who never aligned with their beliefs before.
”Haven has resources. Resources not tied up in SUPER systems,” she clarified, sipping her own wine glass and finding it empty already. It really was going to be a long dinner, wasn’t it? ”Tracking allocated funds and facilities, seeing where money is going missing and where it’s running off to; that’ll suss out rogue operations and their bases. Beyond that… well, um.” Okay, how did she actually phrase this part without making it sound like both a terrible idea and (debatably) treason.
”Any chance Haven would be interested in getting a spy into SUPER?”
Sabine had enough to worry about without being tasked with wrangling agents who decided to run off for some kind of joyride vacation. She was not in charge, and she wished people would stop acting like she was responsible for all the problems that kept popping up. Unfortunately, her superiors had mastered the important managerial strategy of delegation, and they loved delegating to Senior Agent Sang.
This time, she was cranky from a flight that took her down to Texas of all places. The agent was Michael Hunter, who Sabine had no previous experience with. In fact, the paperwork on him seemed flimsy-- another reason not to trust some of the other senior agents when it came to documentation.
Not wanting to waste time, Sabine entered the room where the agent who played hooky awaited her. This could be a good opportunity for her to gather some intel on who he actually was so she did not have to trust questionable reports.
”So,” she opened coolly as she entered, flipping through sheets on a clipboard, ”Agent Hunter, correct? Any chance you’d be willing to debrief me on how in the hell you and that girlfriend of yours ended up at a cabin in Texas?”

Sabine appreciated work-ethic in her agents. So many people wanted to make a big splash to climb the ladder, but plenty were looking to do so through the path of least resistance. She also appreciated competence; frankly, plenty of agents were lacking in some areas. SUPER did not always pick up complete products and training helped pick up the slack. Still, it was nice to have someone join who required no babying.
Kent understood why he was being picked for this duty, more than on a surface level. He cared about his fellow mutants, and a mutant agent might have an easier time speaking with mutant victims. ”Some of our work is clandestine, but it does not hurt to be seen investigating matters such as these. Obviously SUPER brought questionable PR here from the other universe, and Haven’s theatrics in calling that out have not helped us. If we’re going to investigate trouble in the mutant community, having inroads with them will make our lives easier.”
The second implication forced a smirk out of Sabine. ”You’re smart. I do hate to pull you into office politics out of the gate, but I do have a task if you’re willing to take it on,” she admitted. ”I’m trying to suss out some of the… less savory old-guard elements from SUPER and I feel you may be equipped to help me with this.”
