The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Sabine dutifully did her part, wondering if she could set up a little herb garden on her balcony at some point. It was nice feeling like she was playing a part in growing things. Though she might need the help of an actual green thumb like Pippa. Which would involve inviting Pippa to her place, which gave Sabine the very uncommon sensation of butterflies.
"Not what you expected," she repeated, smiling. "That's fun; I'm usually just about what people expect." By design, of course; there was comfort in the status quo, even when the status was less than stellar.
Having successfully dug out a space to transfer the plants, Sabine set her spade down and turned to face Pippa. "I guess this is the one time I'm glad I defied expectations." Noticing a spot of dirt on the finger of her glove, Sabine smirked and, without much thought, booped the tip of Pippa's nose. "Even if I'm dirtying you up a little."

Everyone thought about the wasteland warriors when imagining their apocalypse plans, so people assumed Sabine was the person to keep around. She was a fighter, a shooter, and a tactician. Sabine knew that you wanted people who could keep people fed (like Pippa) or alive (like AJ) so she knew who she'd be calling when the s*** hit the fan. "Please, every dystopia story has to have its plucky main character."
Slipping on the sturdy gardening gloves, Sabine grabbed her gardening tool and dug the blade into the soil, heaving a sizeable pile from the bag and into one of the larger pots. "Trust me, I don't envy you, and I'm the one who ends up in front of the mic half the time." Shoveling was going to be her workout for the evening, but Sabine was enjoying the wholesome labor. It was a change of pace doing something domestic. "I know you won the... dirt lottery when it comes to this job, but if it makes a difference, I've liked having you around. Totally selfish, I know," she added in a more playful, overdramatic tone. Sabine was allowed to be selfish in this one regard.
Getting into the headspace of a spurned ex was unexpectedly easy, despite Sabine's lack of a dating history. Looking at AJ, she pictured a relationship starting when he charmed her at some wine bar. This Sabine, of course, was drawn in by his soulful eyes and winning personality. And she did not take it well when he asked for space, because of course he did. Handsome men like that could get away with toying with a girl.
And now he was doing it all again with another woman all over him? No, this was totally the scene where the player got a wake-up call.
The woman was confused, but AJ dismissed her. 'They never happened,' he said. Clearly they happened! Okay, maybe she exaggerated the relationship, but it was probably a very romantic weekend!
Sabine delivered the payoff, and if AJ was acting shocked, Sabine missed it because she was not expecting the spittake from their unwitting co-star to drench her. Sabine bit her tongue, eyes wide in faux-outrage as she tried not to break character in the silence.
But she lasted until they both got up from AJ's seat to pad her off, and she waved her hands frantically, signalling her babydaddy to back off because how dare he right now? He persisted, leading her to a chair. Sabine huffed, but she accepted, because clearly she was still obsessed with this ex-fling.
Sangria was not pleased. Except she wasn't Sangria, she was Sonja. Sabine scoffed, because she needed to cover up a laugh. "That's so like him. Like, we were in bed and I was being so snuggly, and what did you call me? Subaru!" She glared at AJ, shouting, "I'm NOT a car, AJ!"
Her righteous indignation was interrupted by Sonja splashing a drink in AJ's face and Sabine covered her mouth with her hand. She was going to laugh and this woman was going to kill her for it. Thankfully, Sonja ran off, shouting back at the man who scorned her. "That's right honey, you deserve better!" Sabine called out, waiting for Sonja to get out of earshot before turning back to a doused AJ, and she could finally smile. "So yeah, she seemed nice. You thinking there's a second date there?"

Working behind a desk so much, Sabine found fewer oportunities to flex some of her well-trained skills. Sure, she was a competent fighter and a good shot, but those were rarely if ever the focus of her fieldwork. Sabine trained as an actress in college before settling on her career path, and playing a role was something that came naturally to the agent. There were tragically few reasons to "play a role" behind her desk beyond pretending to be a person with more authority than she actually carried.
This seemed like a situation where Sabine could be helpful to AJ and have some fun. Keep those acting muscles engaged, as it were.
And lucky for her, AJ chose B, an option so far removed from Sabine's current life, she would jump at the chance to ham it up.
"AJ, you jerk!" she called out, stepping hastily onto the restaurant patio. She had to keep her volume controlled enough not to actually get AJ kicked out or have the cops called on her. As much as she would enjoy shouting at her deadbeat ex, her lament had to be more public-friendly. "I can't believe you're already out and about, like we never happened."
Riling up a sense for drama, Sabine felt the sting in the corner of her eye. Oh, if she could get herself to cry on command, this would be her best moment of 2021. She just had to keep pushing. "Well, I hope you're having fun," Sabine spat out, grabbing the back of an unused chair and leaning over it for support. "And I hope this one doesn't mind being a step-mother, AJ. Because I'm. Late."

It was annoying reading people passively because Sabine did notice the way Pippa's tone and expression shifted when thinking about meeting AJ. Not that she could be blamed for that; the guy was heroic without all the ego of your typical "heroes." They also had a meet-cute torn from some TV romance flick, which was better for reminiscing than a tense office meeting.
You know what else Pippa clearly enjoyed? The communal garden! Sabine was going to keep her head in the moment and turn of her analysis brain because she was invited to enjoy her night surrounded by vibrant greens and colorful fruits. "I mean, as fancy as a private garden sounds, a community greenhouse somehow sounds more wholesome. And I'm sure the non-gardeners will really love you when the zombies come." Everyone had to have a zombie plan, and a sustainable shared vegetable garden was the cornerstone of an S-tier zombie plan.
Pippa knew where she was going, finding pots of growing chilies. They needed to be transferred, which Sabine guessed was a standard part of the potted plant life cycle. She was not an expert gardener, but she was an enthusiastic learner, so she held out her hands. "My hands are up for the challenge, Pip," Sabine assured her, shortening her name without much thought. "Just tell me what you need me to do, and I'm very ready to get down and dirty."

Whatever the root cause of the persistent attacks on Sabine, her assailants were laying low as of late. She wondered if the lull in her impending doom was connected to the emergence of a "magic cult," but Sabine was just glad she could walk the city with her default levels of caution and paranoia. You never shook your training, but you could let go of some tension and grab a bite to eat.
Sabine tapped her foot impatiently, standing beside the entrance to the restaurant when she finally received a text.
Fucking hell, Sab, I'm sorry. The meeting with the board and the NSA is actually never going to end. I think I'm gonna have to take a rain check. Maybe find a new date?
Fucking Kristoff. Not that she envied him; for all the responsibility Sabine had thrust on her shoulders, Kristoff was the one high on the food chain dealing with bureaucracy as the primary focus of his job. Sorry SOB. That did not mean she would spare him grief for cancelling on her or insinuating their meet-up was a date.
Rolling her eyes, Sabine looked through her phone. She was still hungry and she could eat alone, but there were other options. She could text Sveta and make it a business dinner with her number one frenemy. Of course, if she really wanted to enjoy dinner, maybe Pippa was available...
>> "Then why are you here, if you don't want to date?"
Dealing with people the way Sabine did, remembering faces and voices became necessary talents. That voice around the corner was familiar. Side-stepping toward the corner of the restaurant's brick wall, she peeked her head around the corner and confirmed it: AJ, Pippa's kind, brave, and (admittedly) handsome friend was sitting at the outdoor patio. What's more, he was clearly on a date. (With not Pippa, she also could not help but note.)
Ever the observer, the body language of the pair screamed everything she needed to know. The woman was needy to the point of physical clinginess. She was demanding attention, and AJ's tension said he was not keen on being wrapped in her embrace. If he was less of a gentleman, he probably would have jumped out of his seat, but leaving a bad date politely was next to impossible.
Not without help, at least. Grabbing her cell phone, Sabine found AJ's number, claimed after the baseball incident. He was a witness and a major part of Sabine still breathing, so they exchanged numbers in case there was some follow-up on what happened. Now she could, in a small way, pay him back by saving him in his time of need. Typing out a very fast text, she hit send and kept an eye on the scene from her spot around the corner.
Quick, Choose Your Adventure! a. Jealous Girlfriend b. Pregnant Ex c. High School Sweetheart
Sabine waited for a response to get in the right headspace, but once she was there, she finally turned the corner and approached the outdoor table. "AJ??"

Fate was weird. Not that Sabine was a believer in fates, but the way life kept throwing poignant, plot-driven curveballs at her, it was hard not to imagine some rhythm to life. Pippa could have been anyone loaned out to SUPER by Sveta, but she was inevitably a face from Sabine's checkered past. It figured she'd learn to confide in a woman who, through no fault of her own, reminded Sabine not just of how far she had come but how low she was at her worst.
Drunk gardening didn't fix a monster, but it did give her something fun to do.
Grabbing their drinks, Sabine let Pippa lead the way to the rooftop. It was very New York, in one dimension or another, to enjoy an evening on the roof with friends. And it made sense for Pippa to be tending to a garden above the city-- right next to the patched space from the AJ incident. "You really weren't kidding about how he dropped in on you," she muttered. They approached the glass greenhouse and Sabine contemplated veggies. "It all sounds good if it's fresh," she admitted. "Chilis and spices sound very much my speed. Toss it up with some noodles, garlic, and peanuts and that's basically half my stakeouts." In a pinch, Thai food was easy to find in the city.
Feeling the change in temperature as they stepped into the greenhouse, Sabine looked around at the flourishing plants. "You know, when I was looking for an apartment, I didn't even think 'garden in the sky' was something I could include in my hunt. How long have you had this place?"

Sabine was not good at being herself; for a long time, she struggled to identify what "herself" was. With so much of her time spent mirroring people around her, Sabine fell into a struggle with her own identity apart from the people interacting with her. She hoped the real her was some semblance of who she was with Pippa tonight. It felt easy being like this; casual, but vulnerable.
Admitting she knew her doppelganger opened Pippa for bemused questioning. "She's a stage actress. Small roles, but she seems to be doing fine. Funny enough, that was a possible career I looked into in University." Her unique educational path gave Sabine a breadth of career path options, and life would have been wildly different if she had not been called by a desire to prevent tragedies like what happened with her mother. She could have been living in the Village, performing off-Broadway, likely still in her own world.
And if she did that, maybe she would have kept the burden of her biases. There was no telling what paths a life could take, except for her doppelganger, whose mother never died, keeping her in Canada. "She might have seen me. I'm not going to bother her, but I'm sure if she was really curious about me, she'd reach out." Sabine was annoyingly reachable thanks to SUPER.
Both Sabines lived lives semi-publicly, but it made sense for Pippa not to cross paths with her AV self. Given that Pippa's relationship with SUPER, reaching out to this Pippa would have been a degree of visibility not worth the risk. It was not Sabine's place to air out details of Pippa's doppelganger if neither Pippa pursued that on their own. "Whoever she was, I'm guessing she was passionate and trying to do good. Some things feel universal." In the AV, Pippa was labeled an extremist, but she lived in an extreme world. Sabine was learning to view the struggles of those vocal protests in the context of what mutants in her world went through.
"Speaking of doing good, I imagine your garden is still hoping for some love. Maybe I can lend a hand?" Even with a glass of wine, she had a free hand for a trowel.

Sabine settled onto the couch with her drink in hand. How did they get on such a bittersweet path of conversation? Sabine was carrying a lot on her chest for the better part of four years. There were other people she had near-death experiences with in that time, but they were all SUPER people. Pippa was working with SUPER, but she was different. Pippa was just a person with a big heart and Sabine found her easy to trust after months of watching each other's backs.
Pippa did not lie to Sabine, but she did offer her support without judgement. Sabine placed her hand on Pippa's briefly, just to give it a squeeze to thank her for being what Sabine needed in the moment. "You say that because you're sweet, but thanks." Her smile reached her eyes that time.
The topic shifted, thankfully, to Sabine's doppelganger in their current world. "Of course. Who wasn't curious about the other version of themselves?" Sabine had the benefits of a government database, not that she needed it for her doppelganger. "Sabine Sang-Marques, an actress back in Quebec. I'm not going to reach out to her, because how weird must that be, but there is at least one Sabine in this universe living a pretty normal life," she joked. "What about you? Did you ever cross paths with your double?" Her tone suggested nothing, as if Sabine knew nothing of the Pippa in her own world.

In hindsight, Sabine was glad her dark humor missed the mark. Pippa did not know how bad SUPER used to be. Aggressive recruitment was a PR-friendly way to refer to an unpleasant past of coercing and sometimes kidnapping high-value targets. It was better for Pippa not to deal with the burden of past sins she was not involved with.
Pippa may not know the full extent, but there were stories. There was time to see what that universe was like, and Sabine was morbidly curious. She did not want to drag down the mood, but Sabine was investigative by nature. Pippa supposedly kept her interactions with Sabine's homeworld to a minimum; for the best.
Sabine was the one who existed with her front foot in one world and her back foot in an alternate past. "There's a lot to adjust to," she admitted. "The Yankees are pretty good here, which is cool. I had to relearn my commute, but the streets make more sense here. That's neat. Oh, but I had a go-to beer brand, Winsbrew, and nothing has tasted quite right here."
Sipping her drink, Sabine thought back to things she would not see again. "I never got to say sorry to my mom. I should have pulled in all my favors to transfer her over. She would have gotten better care here. I probably wouldn't be unlearning so many awful beliefs if that rift could have opened up sooner. You're meeting me at my best, honestly, not that it's saying much," the agent joked, but it did not reach her eyes.

Thinking out of the box was important. Being in a box, metaphorically or literally, was an easy place to get shot. AJ understood the assignment, preparing to steal a fire truck; as far as resourcefulness went, it was a better plan than Sabine had at the moment.
Pippa clearly had her doubts. Justifiable doubts. This was definitely a felony if she was not… well, her. And the optics were bad—though they were slightly better in a paranormal darkness no one else saw through.
Even with her concerns, Pippa talked herself into being on board because the alternative was waiting to be shot. Sabine smirked to herself, imagining this was going to be Pippa’s first time doing something this illegal. After the sinking ship, she was getting good at rolling with the punches. Assuming this attack was Sabine’s fault, she did feel guilty for her part in Pippa’s new normal.
Their new partner in crime had not been pulled into this, but he was surprisingly good at jumping into things with both feet. Sabine focused on his enthusiasm and not his use of the word “try” when he talked about driving the truck. They were in the vehicle, with Sabine flashing her badge as she cleared the steps up into the interior. With a hiss, they were through the gates in seconds, so she was trusting him to handle things on his end of the catastrophe.
The poor firefighters had no clue what to do beyond run after them, and Sabine shouting, ”SUPER Business, sorry!” was not going to bring them comfort.
Sabine saw the blades of a helicopter rising over the stadium. They knew the target was leaving, so they likely got personnel back on the chopper to pursue. Sabine’s neck snapped to the sudden smashing of the passenger-side window, but before she could do anything about it, the other windows followed suit, shattering inward. Sabine raised her arm, doing her best not to take shards of window to the face. ”We need to move. And ideally get underground—a tunnel or something. And people need to f**king move.” Sabine was not feeling particularly patient when she found the control for the siren and slammed it on. They were clearly not being inconspicuous, so hopefully they could convince people to get out of the way.

She was putting it mildly. AJ was flying by the seat of his pants at the stadium, but he showed himself to be cool under pressure and willing to put himself on the line to protect people. In Sabine's book, those were signs of a good egg. "He's a good man. I'm glad SUPER's better than it was, or someone would be aggressively recruiting him." It was possible that could have happened, even in a kinder, gentler SUPER, so Sabine elected not to report sightings of an Adapted. AJ had not recognized himself as such anyway, so she was barely covering it up.
Sabine noticed Pippa's signature gloves, recognizing how much of her life must have involved protecting herself from anything with a history. Sabine had plenty of history, but they never discussed if skin-to-skin contact triggered her mutation. Unimportant, but it came to Sabine's mind.
"I wish you'd all stop saying I'm heading things up," she muttered into her drink, taking a big, annoyed sip. She was not in charge, but with her seniority and workload, it felt like it. "But I know what you're saying. SUPER has some nefarious origins, and I was unfortunately part of that," she lamented, thinking of how different she was in the other world. Her world, though it stopped feeling like that long ago. Sabine lived moment-to-moment, and her moments happened here now.
Sabine smiled, the regret keeping it from reaching her eyes. "I'm glad you never saw it like that. Saw me like that." Of course, Sabine was assuming, but inter-dimensional tourism was common before the rift closed. "Did you ever visit the other side? See how the broken half lived?"

Reading people's reactions was a skill Sabine possessed, but if she was blind and socially inept, she still would have picked up the way Pippa's expression changed when she danced around AJ and his status in her life. Still, she ultimately settled on them being friends and for some weird reason, Sabine's stomach calmed back down. "Good. He seems like a great friend and a decent firetruck driver." Sabine meant it with complete sincerity, because without him their experience at the stadium would have gone a much darker direction. Literally.
Sipping the wine, it was absolutely worth grabbing a bottle. The D'Souza Crime Family wouldn't be missing one bottle from lockup. Sabine smirked. "I'd hope being attached at the hip for the better part of three months would make us friendly. Two murder attempts just added character to the experience," she joked.
It was miraculous they made it this far. Not just because of the attempts on their lives, but because of where Pippa came from. It was why Sabine still questioned if they where are as friendly as she hoped. "Assuming I'm not being presumptuous. I know I couldn't gave been your favorite person given my checkered past and your... well, experiences." Pippa was part of Haven before SUPER, and mutant rights activists were not traditionally friends of SUPER. Like the Pippa from her world, who was also an activist. That was still quite the coincidence. Small (twin) world(s)?

Despite expecting a sarcastic quip from Pippa, the impromptu hostess said nothing, making Sabine's pause seem pregnant and awkward. Well, assuming really did make an ass of you and me. Well, mostly Sabine.
Seeking confirmation that she wasn't a burden or an unwelcome presence, Sabine was left wanting with Pippa instead getting caught up in the innocuous appreciation of Pippa building Sabine's social profile from nothing.
Confused, Sabine's patience was rewarded. Rarely did Sabine put herself in positions she was not prepared for. The risk of failure felt high and she wasn't actually sure what success meant here. "I understand. I get antsy when left to my own devices." she didn't forgo her vacations, but by the end of them, she was always itching to get back to work and keep her hands busy.
The mention of AJ dropping through the ceiling bright that story back to mind. Sabine had failed to consider the, by all accounts, handsome paramedic. "There are only so many good men in the world. I don't think you question when one falls into your lap." Oh, why did that thought sit funny in her stomach. "Does he drop in often? Figuratively. Considering you're, well, you, I'm lucky I didn't barge in on you and company." Pippa had the right energy to be a social butterfly. Though Sabine didn't hear about many friends outside of AJ and Haven, come to think of it...

If Pippa was sizing her up, she was doing a good job. "You've caught me; I've never really been a gardener, but I'm a quick learner." The agent grinned, adding, "Plus, you clearly enjoy it enough to invest in cute overalls, so I'm confident I can follow you're lead."
That really didn't answer the second part of Pippa's question; the why of Sabine showing up for drinks and gardening unannounced. She kept a casual composure, looking around the apartment. It was much of what she would expect; decorated thoughtfully, lived in, full of life and plants. It was all cute. Sabine didn't use the word much, but with someone like Pippa, that just made sense.
Sabine handed over the bottle. "I know this may come as a shock, but I've never been big on investing in what you'd call a 'social life' outside of work." She paused for what she assumed would be a sarcastic reaction. "Considering you've kind of built up that social life from scratch, it made sense to drop by when I found some time. I... I hope you don't mind?" And in case Pippa's face might suggest she did, Sabine intentionally avoided it to look around the living space.
