The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It took Andy a few moments to tear his gaze away from the ominous, shadow-like smoke that continued to creepily stretch across the ceiling and scale down the walls, almost as though it had a mind of its own. Where was it going? Andy had no idea, but something told him he probably should not stick around to find out…
But what about Halloween? What about the party? What about the big, fancy hotel room they booked? What about all the fun they planned to have together? They had only just arrived! Andy didn’t want to leave yet… but he also didn't want to die.
With a long, deep, audible sigh, Andy turned to Ignacio and commenced nudging him in the shoulder with his elbow until he got his attention. “Iggy, we should go,” he insisted, reluctantly, as he pointed upwards.“That shit doesn’t look good.”
>> "You see that too then? That's something at least. Wanna try and follow it with me?"
Hearing a voice beside him, Andy quirked an eyebrow and turned his head to see, much to his surprise, a tall, gray-eyed man in a Thor costume towering over him. Even more surprising, Andy knew him from somewhere. Wasn’t he that famous actor Iggy had a poster of on his dorm-room wall… and one of the X-Men!?
That would certainly explain why he wanted to go towards the danger.
“Uh… not really,” Andy replied, honestly, before realizing how bad that sounded. Ugh, it was times like this when Andy started to doubt whether he had what it took to be an X-Man or even an X-Trainee. What if they didn’t let him join the team because of this?
“I mean…” Andy was about to say a few words to redeem himself when, all of a sudden, he caught a flash of something moving out of the corner of his eye. It was the creepy, seemingly autonomous black smoke… and it was coming right towards them!
Heart jumping and eyes widening, Andy let out a yelp of fear as he watched its shadowy tendrils slither across the floor like a horde of deadly snakes. Andy hated snakes. So much so that he instinctively climbed on top of the reception desk and jumped over to the other side so the stuff, whatever the hell it was, wouldn’t touch him.
In his panic, he didn’t care how much trouble he would get in or how much attention he drew to himself; he also completely forgot about-- “Iggy!”
Andy didn't let Kalos's flattery phase him. Figuring she was trying to deflect his question, he narrowed his eyes at her with even more suspicion than before and asked her again, all the while maintaining just enough concentration to sustain the psionic repulsion field that engulfed both of their heads. "Why do you swim so slow if you were born underwater?"
Oh, he had almost forgotten about the creepy tentacles she hid behind her even creepier detachable toes and fingers... Wait a second. Did she just say he had delicate feelings? Furrowing his brow, he quickly said, "I don't have delicate feelings." In hindsight, he was probably one of the most sensitive students at Xavier's, but Kalos didn't have to know that. No one did.
Andy winced slightly in pain as he started to feel the strain of his powers. If he kept this up for much longer, he'd end up with a really bad headache, but he wasn't finish talking with Kalos just yet. "I can handle seeing your tentacles. I was just... surprised when I first saw them, that's all."
And then, just like that, the bubble of air around Kalos's coral-shaped head was gone.
After being outed as a mutant and kicked off the swim team, the only people Andy hung out with before moving to New York were his moms, himself, and whatever friendly sea creatures he came across in the ocean he spent nearly all of his time exploring. That said, it was safe to say he didn’t celebrate Halloween last year. Sure, he still went pumpkin-picking and helped decorate the house, as he did every year, but that was it. No costume. No friends. No fun. As far as he could remember, all he did on Halloween night was lock himself in his room and cry himself to sleep.
Not this year, though. This year was going to be very different. This year, he had a costume, he had friends, and he was going to have plenty of fun.
That was, if his secret boyfriend stopped trying to hold his hand in public.
“Iggy...” Andy pulled his hand away for what felt like the hundredth time and took a deep, calming breath. They were already drawing enough attention to themselves as feather-headed Aztec warriors (Iggy’s idea); the last thing they needed was to be stared at for being gay. “You can touch me all you want as soon as we get to the hotel,” he assured him with a smirk and a playful nudge to the shoulder.
Several blocks later, the Skyline Hotel came into view and Andy unconsciously started walking faster. Excitement coursed through him as he neared the tall, extravagant building where he and Ignacio planned to party all night and sleep all day without having to worry about their roommates catching them in bed together. Why hadn’t they done this sooner?
When they finally arrived, Ignacio tried to hold his hand yet again and, for some reason, Andy felt the strange urge to let it happen. He didn’t know whether his hypnotic, multicolored eyes were to blame or whether he was just tired of saying no, but one thing was for sure: it felt right.
The two strolled into the hotel and up to the front desk to check in, their hands firmly linked. “I guess this isn’t so bad…”
As Ignacio spoke with the receptionist, Andy continued surveying the area for any signs of homophobic activity, just to be sure. That was when he spotted what looked like black smoke stretch across the ceiling and travel down the walls in a way that made him think it wasn't regular smoke.
"Holy shit," Andy spat out in a mixture of surprise and shock, wide-eyed.
A look of worry flashed across Andy's face as he watched a determined Kalos charge toward the pool. For a second, he was sure she'd slip, fall, and break into a million of tiny coral pieces, but she didn't. Andy let out the breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding and smiled in relief. He didn't care how big of a splash she made; he was just glad she didn't get hurt trying to do something he encouraged her to do.
Or at least, he didn't think she got hurt. Andy lifted an eyebrow in confusion when she didn't immediately resurface and dipped his head underwater to check on her. Much to his surprise, she seemed to be struggling to swim, as though something was weighing her down, and Andy didn't think twice about swimming to the bottom of the pool to help her.
Once he got close enough, he held out his hand and, with a twinge of concentration, engulfed her entire head in what looked like a bubble of air so she'd be able to hear him. "Are you okay? Why are you swimming so slow? I thought you said you were Atlantean..."
Andy kicked off his flip-flops and sat down on the blanket the limo driver laid out for them, but before he could say thank you the well-dressed, stoic man was already on his way back to the parking lot. Sighing, Andy rested his arms on his knees and leaned forward to admire the beautiful, sunlit ocean for a brief moment, before turning his attention back to the girl who he could potentially call his girlfriend. Whether he wanted to go down that road or not was a different story.
>> "I was actually talking about the beach spot, but I'm so happy to hear that. I really like you, too”
“Oh…” Andy forced a smile and a few chuckles, trying not to appear as guilty as he felt. Sure, he didn’t want to be a bad date, but he also didn’t want to get her hopes up any more than he already had... Not knowing what else to say, Andy bit his lower lip nervously and averted his gaze.
>> "So do you want a quick drink and a small snack before we hit the waves?
“Sure, why not?” So long as it was quick...
>> "We got a bunch of stuff. Just no alcohol or meat. I'm vegan and I don't really drink.”
“Not a problem,” Andy assured her. After all, he was a swimmer. Not only did his parents forbid him from drinking even the tiniest amounts of alcohol, so did his coach. Meat, on the other hand, was something he didn't think he could ever live without. “So how long have you been vegan?” he asked, curious, as he leaned over to see what was in the cooler. Suddenly thirsty, he pulled out the first bottle of water he saw and started drinking it.
>> "God it's so beautiful here. It's hard to believe fall and winter will be here soon. I wish it was summer all the time and I could spend every day at the beach. How about you?"
Andy continued chugging down his water until there was none left, just in time to hear Allegra say something about wanting to spend every day at the beach. “Yeah, who wouldn’t? Ready to go in the water now?”
Dressed in a sweaty white tank top, bright blue athletic shorts and black Adidas sneakers, Andy was on his way back to his room. What a workout... If I keep this up, I’ll be an X-Trainee in no time, he thought as he strolled confidently down the hallway, his chest out and his chin up.
Then he heard what sounded like Allegra’s voice and saw, a few doors down, that her door was wide open.
Shit!
Eyes widening, Andy froze in fear. His instincts told him to hide, to walk the other way and keep avoiding her until she no longer wanted to date him, but his conscience told him otherwise.
Talk to her. Tell her the truth. Be a good person.
But Andy didn’t want to. He was too afraid of what she might say, of how she might react, of who she might tell. Then again, if he kept lying to her, if he kept using her to make everyone at Xavier's think he was straight, she’d have even more of a reason to be angry with or even hate him. And he really didn’t want Allegra to hate him...
“You can do this,” Andy muttered to himself, then took a deep breath and pressed onward. He could feel his heart beating faster and faster with every step he took, but he didn’t stop. He couldn’t stop. He had to do the right thing. He had to be true to himself for once in his life.
Reluctantly, Andy poked his head into her room and saw, much to his surprise, a cute little chihuahua on her bed. “Hey Allegra… You got another dog?” he asked, smiling widely as though nothing was wrong. “Can I pet it?”
A girl asked him out on a date. A really pretty girl. A really pretty, popular girl. Any guy at Xavier’s would have said yes at the drop of a hat, without thinking twice or even once. Andy, on the other hand, wasn’t like other guys… But he couldn’t let her know that. No one at Xavier’s could know.
So, to avoid all suspicion, he did everything his heart told him not to do and said yes. It wasn’t all bad, though. Andy had been wanting to go to the beach for awhile now… and now he finally could! Not only that, he’d be going in a fancy limo. How cool was that?
As he stepped out of the long, pristine vehicle, a part of him felt like royalty. So much so that he couldn’t stop smiling. Another part of him, however, felt like the worst person in the world for leading Allegra on. For making her think he liked her as more than a friend.
Maybe, with time, he could come to like her? He certainly liked her limo… and the fact he’d be able to go to the beach whenever he wanted now. Plus, he never kissed a girl before… or dated one… Maybe it wasn’t so bad? He guessed he’d find out soon enough.
>> “So what do you think?”
So lost in his thoughts, Allegra’s question caught him by surprise. “I, uh… of you?” he asked, both eyebrows raised. “I like you,” he quickly assured her, offering her a warm, comforting smile that was meant to calm any doubts she may have about dating him. Andy certainly had a few.
“Really?” Andy's smile widened as the exciting possibility of resuming his swimming career under the tutelage of someone with so many years of experience filled his mind. Without a doubt, he'd be able to teach him something he didn't already know. Oh, how badly he missed being challenged; to some degree, he even missed being yelled at. “And if the headmaster says no, if there aren't enough students interested...” Andy asked, his voice becoming somewhat shaky, “Can you still, you know, be my coach?”
>> “Why not tell me both? It’ll give me an idea of what you can do.”
Andy pursed his lips and wrinkled his brow in deep thought. Honestly, he couldn’t remember the last time he didn’t use his powers to win a race, which he realized was not a good thing...
Ugh. If only he had been more careful, used his powers a little less, no one would have accused him of cheating, Coach wouldn’t have made him get tested for the X-Gene, and he would have never had to switch schools. Not that he didn’t like Xavier’s. It was just… different. He definitely felt a lot more accepted, normal even, and it was totally awesome having two pools (one in your backyard and the other in your basement), but he still missed his old life sometimes. Okay, a lot of the time. He especially missed being on the swim team… and his moms.
“Umm…”
Andy sighed in a mixture of sadness, regret, shame, and confusion. “Why don’t I just show you?” he suggested, unsure whether his best times were really his best times. Most of the time, he didn’t even realize he was using his powers, especially while he swam. “Got a timer?” he asked, his lips curling into an excited grin.
What was Mr. Cervantes saying? Mutants were allowed to participate in sports like everyone else? What about the Olympics? Andy’s eyes widened as the possibility of following in the footsteps of Michael Phelps and winning 21 gold medals flashed through his mind. But what if someone from high old high school accused him of cheating again? Would he even be fast enough without using his powers? What if he lost control on live TV? Being outed as a mutant to his entire high school was bad enough. He couldn’t imagine the entire world knowing...
>> “And there’s no harm in bringing it up to the headmaster. I was actually going to have a meeting with him later today concerning other matters, but I’ll make sure to bring it up.”
Shaking off his thoughts, Andy shifted his attention back to what was right in front of him--a potential new swim coach--and couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear. “That’d be awesome. Thanks so much, Mr. Cervantes,” he said, a mixture of excitement and gratitude in his voice, before a torrent of possibilities and questions bombarded his head once more.
>> “I’m sure the headmaster will figure all that out. As for the coach, well, I guess I would be the most qualified. So, yeah, probably.”
“Yes!” Andy pumped his fist into the air.
>> You seem eager, though. I take it to mean that you’re experienced in the drink?”
For nearly two years, Andy had been laboring under the delusion that his competitive swimming days were over, and now someone was telling him otherwise. Of course he was eager! “Yeah, I guess you could say that,” Andy said with a small chuckle. “I’ve been swimming since middle school.”
>> “What’s your best time?”
Andy crossed his arms and cast a quick glance at the pool. Reluctantly, he replied, “That depends… Does it matter if I used my powers or not?”
Both hands outstretched, Andy continued crawling along the damp carpet, repelling as much moisture as he could, until he reached the bathroom door. Then he stopped, took a deep breath, and reanalyzed the situation. The bathroom floor was still wet. Adding more water to it would probably be a bad idea. He needed Ghost and her tornado powers to dry off the bathroom floor a little more, but where was she? Andy lifted his head and glanced around the hallway, which was empty, save a handful of nosy students who apparently had nothing better to do than watch him from afar. Oh, how badly Andy wanted to yell at them to mind their own business and get lost, but he couldn’t.
Ugh. If only his powers were better. If only he could bend water to his will like Mr. Cervantes. He wouldn’t even need Ghost’s help. Hell, none of this would have even happened...
>> "How you holding up?"
A voice came from inside the bathroom. Andy turned to see Ghost… and a much drier bathroom floor. It was as though she read his mind. “Great! Everything’s great,” he assured the X-Woman enthusiastically, some frustration bleeding through his voice. “All I gotta do now is…” Taking a deep breath, Andy placed both hands onto the carpet once more and, as he exhaled, expanded his psionic repulsion fields as far as they could go. Instantly, what looked like a gallon of water poured out into the bathroom.
“You’re up, Ghost,” Andy said with a grin, before looking behind him to see if there was any more dampness left in the carpet. “I think that’s all of it… Well, most of it.” Dammit.
How long have you been at Xavier’s? Was that really the question Andy wanted to ask? No, not really. What he wanted to know more than anything else was whether or not Ignacio liked men. All the signs were there--the winking, the flirting, the way he looked him up and down as though he was a juicy piece of meat--but he couldn’t bring himself to say it. Andy was too scared of rejection, though he tried to hide his fear behind a friendly, seemingly carefree smile.
Andy nodded to show he was listening to Juliette, even though his mind was elsewhere. It wasn’t until Ignacio spoke that Andy’s attention shifted back to the present moment. “Vaya...” he muttered in surprise, both eyebrows raised. "That's a long time to be away from home." Didn’t Ignacio miss his family? Did he even have a family? Would it be weird to ask?
>> "Wait, ¿hablas español?"
Wrinkling his brow, Andy resisted the urge to roll his eyes at Ignacio’s question. Even with his perpetually tan skin, no one ever assumed he could speak Spanish, because he didn’t “look” Latino, and it annoyed him to no end. Andy wouldn’t make a big deal out of it, though. He never did.
“Claro que hablo español,” Andy replied as though it was obvious. “Desde los cuatro años...” With a deep, reluctant sigh, he explained, “Mi mamá es cubana… y mi otra mamá es puertorriqueña.”
Kalos said the word ‘shit’ again and, for a brief moment, Andy cringed as though in pain. It was a word he said - and thought - nearly every day, multiple times a day, but he was allowed to. He was sixteen. How old was Kalos? Probably eight or nine, maybe even seven… What if she thought it wasn’t a bad word now that she heard him say it twice? Then Andy realized she was only saying the word because she thought it was the name of his second trick. Oh…
Andy’s face broke into a smile and a few chuckles escaped his lips. Not wanting to look a gift horse in the mouth, he chose not to correct her. “Yeah, well, the point of the second trick isn’t to make a splash. It’s to walk on water… But it’s not easy.” It might not even be possible… but he’d probably keep trying in his free time, anyway. Why? Because he wasn’t a quitter.
>> "No tricks. I'm just Kalos. Kalos is trick enough from the gods."
Andy quirked an eyebrow. It was strange interacting with someone who believed in more than one god, but he knew better than most that imposing his own beliefs upon others was wrong. Or maybe it was just a part of her Atlantean act? Whether she was lying or not, Andy kept his mouth shut for fear of upsetting her, just as he would be upset if someone told him his moms shouldn’t be allowed to marry.
>> "I could try your cannonball if you want."
“Uhh…” As young as she was, Andy found it hard to believe she had never done a cannonball before, but if there was one thing he was good at it was going with the flow. “Yeah, go for it,” Andy said with a smile before swimming to the other end of the pool to give her room.
With a small, controlled sigh, Andy picked up one of his pencils and twisted it idly between his thumb and index finger as he waited for class to begin. Leaning further back in his seat, he tried not to let his eyes wander around the classroom. What was the point? He didn’t know anyone, and he wasn’t in the mood to try to make friends. He’d have plenty of time to do that later… Besides, class would start soon.
Any second now… he thought to himself, brown eyes glued to the art teacher, whose name was written on the chalkboard at the front of the classroom for all to see: Mr. Holloway. And then, out of nowhere, someone sat next to him and started talking to him… and playfully poked him in the arm.
>> "Well, look who it is! Andy! How are ya?"
Eyes widening in surprise, Andy stopped fidgeting with his pencil and looked to his left. It was the same guy he met at the pool a week or two ago! The one with the multicolored eyes… and the hottest body he had ever seen… and the questionable sexual orientation.
Both excited and nervous, Andy flashed his best smile, sat up straight in his seat, and said, “Ignacio, hey. I’m, um...” He paused, momentarily distracted by how short Ignacio’s shorts were… and how pink. Shaking his head, Andy let out a chuckle of embarrassment, set his pencil on his desk, and continued, “I’m good. Real good. Haven’t drowned yet... What about you?”
