The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Andy could feel the water on his skin bleed through his clothes. He could also feel his heart racing, his eyes glued to the door as he waited intently for the woman to reappear out of thin air. Instead, she called out to him from the hallway, asking for him to help. Maybe if he did she’d be more forgiving and not give him a detention for flooding the bathroom?
Without giving it a second thought, he made a beeline for the door and grabbed the doorknob. He was about to yank the door open when he realized he might cause more water to flow out and ruin the dam the woman made. “Uhh…” There was no other way out, though. Unlike her, he couldn’t turn himself into a ghost.
“I’m coming out now,” he warned before taking a breath and turning the doorknob. As he predicted, water flowed out into the hallway as he pushed the door open all the way, but hey, he was just following orders…
“Oops,” he muttered as he stepped over the soaked towels by the door and onto the also soaked carpet, where he saw two people lying on the floor. One looked like a cute guystudent he had seen around the mansion before but never talked to, and the other looked like... Oh no, Andy thought, his eyes widening in surprise and shock at the realization that she was the ghost-like woman, but now fully solid. There went any chance he had at not getting in trouble…
>> "Anybody know a water manipulator? Jorge isn't on duty today. Heat? No? Nobody has a beneficial mutation for cleaning up spills?"
For a brief moment, all Andy could do was stare as the woman helped the attractive male student up to his feet. When she didn't immediately stand up, he realized this was his chance to get back on her good side and quickly rushed over to offer her a hand. “I’m so sorry, are you okay?” he asked with a concerned (and slightly scared) look on his face, his hand outstretched.
“I can’t manipulate water like Mr. Cervantes, but I can repel it. Maybe I can try pushing it all back into the bathroom?” Or would that only make it worse? Ugh. It was times like this when he thought his powers sucked. "Or I can go get more towels? Just tell me what to do and I'll do it."
See? Andy smirked. He knew Kalos wasn’t her real name, but rather one she fashioned for herself to make people believe she was from a mythical underwater city. He had to give her points for creativeness, though.
>> "You would have liked Atlantis, I think. Except for the King. No, you probably would have liked the king. All the demigods liked the king until the X-men arrived."
Andy internally rolled his eyes at all the crazy that flowed out of Kalos’s mouth. Kings? Demigods? Here we go again… he thought, fighting the urge to question her about her strange delusion. But then she mentioned the X-Men, which automatically gave her story some credibility.
Quirking a brow in surprise, he asked, “The X-Men went to Atlantis? You mean the new country, Atlantis? Or the mythical underwater city?” Oops, did he just call it a mythical underwater city?
Not wanting to upset her, he quickly tried to change the subject by offering to show her one of his many ‘pool party tricks’. He hadn’t perfected it yet, but it’d still look cool. Besides, it wasn’t like he cared what a little eight-year-old girl thought of him, if he did screw up.
>> "I will witness your new technique. Will you show it to me?"
Andy’s smile widened as a wave of excitement coursed through him. “Okay, here I go,” he said before dipping down into the water and swimming to the bottom. There, he got into position, placing both feet firmly on the floor and balled his hands into fists to gather his mental energy.
Looking upwards, Andy crouched down low and counted down as though he was an astronaut. “3… 2… 1…” Before he could say blast off, Andy felt himself being launched upward... and he couldn’t stop. In less than a second, he broke through the water’s surface and flew into the air like a rocket. “Ahhh!” he screamed in fear before gravity came to his rescue, bringing him back down.
Quickly, he pulled his legs up tight to his chest, shut his eyes and yelled, “Cannonball!”
Every time Andy was submerged in water, he felt a rush of power. Like he was invincible. Like he could do anything. If his mutation allowed him to see in poorly lit conditions, like a fish, he would probably even go as far as to call himself king of the ocean. For now, though, he would just have to settle with the title of ‘King of all swimming pools’.
That was why he was smiling, why he couldn’t stop smiling. Whenever he was in water, he just felt… happy.
>> "Andy is a lovely name. Bubblehead is... also... lovely."
“Thanks,” Andy said as he continued to tread water, still smiling. If a cute guy would have said that, he would have probably blushed and burst into a fit of nervous laughter. She was a little girl, though, and so he remained completely calm. “What should I call you?”
>> "I have the name Kalos, by the way."
“Kalos?” That was probably the weirdest name he had ever heard. Then again, he shouldn’t have been surprised. She was from Atlantis, after all, or so she claimed. “What an interesting name…”
>> "How are you finding the water? It is well?"
Andy nodded without a shred of doubt on his face. “Oh, it’s really well. So well… I love water,” he said as he extended both arms and laid back in the water. He stared up at the metallic ceiling for a moment before suddenly spinning around and using his legs and feet to kick against side of the pool, thrusting himself toward where Kalos was sitting.
“Hey, Kalos, you wanna see something? I’ve been working on a new technique.”
The silver-haired man lowered his newspaper, letting it drop to his lap, and Andy’s eyes drifted momentarily to his Miami Dolphins tank. He wondered if he was from Miami, too, or if he just really liked the team. It was a good team, after all, or at least that was what everyone said. He didn’t follow football, only swimming.
>> ”If you mean swim class, then yes…”
Andy perked up almost instantly, raising both his eyebrows in a mixture of surprise and excitement. Even better, Andy thought. Now that was a class he actually wouldn’t mind doing homework for every day.
>> ”It was just Swimming 101. Mansion offers it to those who are interested.”
Andy’s excitement levels dropped as quickly as they had risen upon realizing it was only a beginners course. Trying not to frown, he said, “Oh. Cool… Does the mansion offer any advanced swimming classes? I used to swim competitively before...” His coach kicked him off the team for using his powers to cheat? No, that was too embarrassing to say, especially to a total stranger. “Coming here.”
>> ”Name is Jorge Cervantes. I’m the swim coach. You must be new here, Mr….?”
Smiling widely, Andy nodded and stuck out his hand for a handshake without a shred of hesitation. If there was anyone at the mansion he was eager to meet and impress, it was the swim coach. Like most, if not all, of the teachers at Xavier's, he was probably an X-Man, too. “I’m Andy. Andy Sanchez-Soto. You can also call me by my codename, Bubblehead,” he said as confidently as possible, his chin up and his chest out.
Andy lifted his gaze when the woman said it wasn’t the first bathroom that flooded this year. Really? That made him feel a little better. A lot better, actually. A small smile rose to his lips as a wave of relief and hope washed over him. Maybe he could blame the flood on a faulty toilet or another student or something? But then he’d be lying…
Andy tightened his grip around his towel and averted his gaze once more, unsure of how to explain what happened. Maybe he didn’t have to? It wasn’t like she asked. Maybe she just assumed it wasn’t his fault?
>> "Right! I've made a dam outside your door so you have time to- uh- I'm really sorry. I thought you were— I'll be outside. Once you're clothed, we can chat."
The woman apologized for her intrusion and Andy couldn't help but smile. Maybe he really was going to get away with this? “It’s okay. You were only trying to help,” he said before she floated out of the bathroom, giving him the privacy he needed to change.
Once she disappeared from sight, Andy let out a sigh of relief and walked over - carefully - to the shelf where he had placed his clean clothes. He could have used his powers to repel the water from his feet and make walking easier, but not without the risk of causing more water to flow under the door and into the hallway.
Before dropping his towel, he glanced back at the door and turned away just in case the ghost-like woman was still there. Without taking the time to dry himself off first, he quickly slipped on his boxers, his beach tank and his shorts.
“I’m decent now!”
With that, he turned back around and commenced biting his lower lip nervously as though he was about to go on trial.
With a sigh, Andy glanced down at what what was left of his coconut ice-cream and picked up his spoon once more. By this point, it was mostly melted, but still tasted good, though not nearly as good as before. He was too worried about his test tomorrow to enjoy his food. Too nervous. Too frustrated. Too annoyed. Seriously, what was up with this girl? Her smile only grew wider the more she talked. He doubted if she was even capable of not smiling. Maybe she was on drugs? Or maybe chronic liveliness was a part of her mutation? She also talked kind of weird...
Andy quirked an eyebrow when she asked if they needed ice-cream to recharge. He wasn’t a robot...
>> "Ice cream is good for recharging. We are taking a break from work, not sleep, though. Late hours."
Andy looked to Miss Taylor and shrugged. If only she knew all the hours Andy didn’t work, she would probably see him in a different light... Ugh. Why couldn’t he be a better student? Why couldn’t he just do his homework in advance, study more and be on top of everything? When he first arrived at Xavier’s, he got this crazy idea that maybe he could start over and turn things around, but history was repeating itself right before his very eyes and what was he doing? Eating ice-cream.
>> "Hiya! Are you getting enough ice cream?"
When the girl spoke to him, Andy looked up from his ice-cream and quirked a brow in confusion. Was she calling him flaco? He cast a quick glance at his arms, which he guessed could be a little bigger, before nodding with uncertainty. “I think so?”
>> "I’m Victoria."
Whatever the reason, Andy still felt the need to muster a smile when she introduced herself. “I’m Andy. Nice to meet you,” he said out of habit, though not nearly as enthusiastic as he would have been under better circumstances.
>> "Want some ice cream?"
Andy pushed the box of coconut ice-cream toward Victoria without a shred of hesitance. “There isn’t much left, but feel free to finish it off. I don’t want any more.” What he wanted was to go back to his room and keep studying...
Andy told himself he had time to spare, but that was a lie, and every logical, rational, and reasonable part of him part of him knew it. I need to leave. Now.
>> "Taking a break is very healthy. If you are too stressed, you won't retain what you study. Pacing yourself is important."
Andy nodded as though he had heard it all before – because he had. His old guidance counselor used to tell him the same thing. “I’ve taken too many breaks already...” he admitted, his mind flashing back to all the times he chose swimming over studying. You have to leave, his brain reminded him. No more ice-cream. No more talking. Just. Go.
>> “Hello! You guys can’t sleep?”
Just as Andy was about to finally stand up and tell the ever-understanding Miss Taylor that it was nice meeting her, a weirdly pale, red-eyed girl walked into kitchen with an excited smile plastered on her face. At this hour, he didn’t expect anyone to be so peppy, but she was, and it bothered him way more than he knew it should. Seriously, she looked as though she didn’t have a single care in the world, probably because she wasn’t taking any summer classes, and Andy couldn’t help but feel jealous, as well as regretful.
I should have never taken Chemistry in the summer… What was I thinking? he asked himself before forcing his lips into a smile that he hoped appeared more friendly than he felt inside. Miss Taylor said they were taking an ice-cream break and Andy shrugged. “Hey,” he greeted the girl, trying not to get entranced by her strangely colored eyes, which for some reason made him want to stay a little longer. No, his brain protested, ordering him to leave, but Andy’s body didn’t seem to respond. He didn't want to be rude.
Andy wasn’t used to using his psionic repulsion fields offensively. Before coming to Xavier’s, he only ever used them to better his swimming – to enhance his speed underwater and reach deeper depths than the average human could withstand. So, when the man who grabbed his hand was suddenly blasted backwards by him, Andy was just as surprised as he was relieved. I did it! he thought with a grin as a twinge of pride crept into his being.
The feeling was short-lived, however, as he remembered there were two of them. Spinning around, Andy found himself face-to-face with a woman who reached out both hands as though to grab him. Capture him. Instinctively, Andy did the same to her as he did to the man, shoving her away with his powers, then quickly swam back down to the bottom of the pool, where he felt safer. More powerful.
With a twitch of his brow, Andy expanded the 'bubble' surrounding his head and drew a deep breath of fresh oxygen. So long as he remained in his element, he would be fine. Or so he thought...
Suddenly, the woman turned into what looked like pure light, nearly blinding him. She's a mutant!? Andy stared at the bright woman through squinted eyes, confused, scared and amazed all at once. Since when did mutants hunt down other mutants? And why was he being hunted in the first place? All he did was flood one bathroom, which he cleaned up. It wasn’t like he hurt anyone. He didn’t deserve this!
The woman dove back down and swam towards him at a much faster speed than before. Heart jumping, Andy let out a yelp of fear and propelled himself to the opposite end of the pool… right towards the man, who was now engulfed in what looked like multicolored flames!
“Ahhh!” he screamed frantically as the man wrapped his flaming arms around his waist and pulled him back up to the surface. Overtaken by fear, Andy flailed his arms and legs, trying to break free as though his life depended on it, but it was helpless. The man was too strong and… not burning him? It was more of a warm feeling, if anything, Andy concluded as he curiously glanced down at the strange, waterproof flames that coated the man’s chiseled, coal-black body. But that didn’t mean he was safe… Far from it!
“Why are you doing this?” Andy spat out, in a desperate tone, as the man dragged him toward the pool’s edge. “I didn’t hurt anyone! I’m innocent, I swear!”
Andy continued to reach desperately for his towel, straining his arm as far as it could go, but still only managed to graze it with his fingertips. “Ugh.” If only he had a different mutant power. Telekinesis. Flight. Invisibility. Any one of those would have made his life so much easier right now. But no, all he could do was repel water... which was only making the situation worse!
>> “Are you okay!?”
The thought of yelling ‘I’m fine!’ crossed Andy’s mind, but he was too embarrassed and too afraid of being blamed for the mess to spit two words out. Besides, the door was locked, he remembered. How was she going to—
>> “I’m coming in now.”
What!? How!? Heart jumping, Andy whipped his head in the direction of the door and couldn’t help but stare with wide eyes at the mysterious smoke that suddenly seeped in from under the door. For a moment, Andy was unsure of what was happening until the smoke started to condense and take the shape of a—SHIT!
Realizing the smoke was a person, Andy scrambled to his feet, grabbed his towel and wrapped it around his waist as quickly as possible, all the while trying really hard not to slip and fall on his ass again.
>> "Goodness. Are you okay?"
Like a deer in headlights, Andy was at a loss for words as he looked at the see-through woman floating before him like a ghost, his cheeks reddening with embarrassment. A part of him couldn’t even believe this was happening. If he went to any other boarding school, this wouldn’t be happening. The locked door would have at least bought him enough time to get dressed. And now, thanks to the ghost-like woman, it was unlocked, which meant more people could come barging in any second now to see the colossal mess he made. Ugh.
>> "Please tell me you're dying from something other than embarrassment."
I wish, Andy thought, then shook his head and said, “I’m fine. I just slipped and fell, that’s all…” Avoiding eye contact, Andy rubbed his sore lower back with one hand while keeping his towel firmly in place with the other. There was no way he was going to let the woman see any more of him than she probably already had. “I’m more worried about the bathroom,” he admitted as he glanced down at the flooded floor, a look of regret covering his face.
Andy raised a brow and nodded. Was is that much of a surprise? People were polite to each other all the time. Well, most people. The girl acted as though she spent most of her time around the few who lived primitively, without any concept of manners... Maybe because she grew up around fish and all sorts of other sea creatures?
No, Andy caught himself, shaking his head in protest at the possibility that she really was born under the sea. There was just no way...
>> "You may have a swim. I will not hamper you."
For a brief moment, Andy thought the girl was going to leave right then and there, which made him feel like an awful person not being as open and friendly as he would have been with someone who didn't have removable appendages and tentacles. He didn't mean to drive her away; he was just very weirded out by her unique physiology.
She didn't leave, though, and neither did her detachable fingers and toes, which she casually dipped back into the water as she remained seated along the edge of the pool. Hopefully, they wouldn't fall off... Andy heaved a breath and smiled as he internally fought to stay calm. He could do this. Even if they did fall into the water, they weren't going to harm him in any way.
>> "Do you... got everything?"
"Uhh..." Andy wasn't completely sure what she was referring to. Did she think he could remove his appendages, too? "I just need to do one more thing..." With that, Andy did what he had been dying to do since he first arrived - he ran forward and dove into the pool head first, much like a dolphin. Guided by his powers, he resurfaced at the opposite end of the pool in less than a second.
Smiling widely, he spun around to face the supposedly Atlantean girl whose name he still didn't know and said, "I'm Andy, by the way. Or you can call me Bubblehead. Whichever you'd prefer."
When Kayla said she'd be down for swimming, Andy's smile widened and the thought of swimming with her now crossed his mind. Most likely, she'd say no, since she probably didn't have her bathing suit on and didn't seem like the type of girl who would swim with a complete stranger in her underwear. However, what she didn't know was that he could dry clothes almost instantly with his powers, much better than any laundry machine could. No, don't do it, his brain commanded, reminding him that they had only just met a few minutes ago. The last thing he wanted was to ruin his chances of being her friend by seeming overly eager. Besides, since they would be living under the same roof from now on, they were bound to cross paths again eventually. Then again, it was a big roof...
>> "That's actually kind of impressive. And yeah, I guess you're right about winning some and losing some."
Andy idly nodded as his mind flashed back to the day his coach kicked him off the swim team for using his 'natural talent' to help his team win the state title. He should have been happy, grateful even, to have a mutant on his team. They could have won more state titles and gotten more recognition, as well as funding, from the school, but instead he chose to call him a rotten cheater and throw away his one-way ticket to success. He didn't even let him attend practices after that...
>> "Well, I should probably check in with the administrators. It was really awesome meeting you though, Andy. If you ever want to hang out, well, I'll be around."
Andy snapped out of his thoughts the moment he heard Kayla's voice. She hadn't checked in yet? She was newer than Andy thought. "Oh, yeah, of course. I'll see you around," he said, smiling, as he shook her hand. A part of her wanted her to stay, to talk some more and go swimming with him, but he knew better than most that everyone, even friends, needed their space sometimes. Besides, it wasn't like he was completely alone now...
With a smirk, he pulled off his shirt and his pants and walked over to the pool. Before he dove head first into the water, he gave Kayla one final glance and shouted, "Best of luck!"
Andy gave an inward sigh of relief, even though he wasn't completely surprised, when Miss Taylor accepted his apology. She was too nice not to. Still, he felt the need to apologize further and decided to purposely schooch his seat a little closer to her after he sat back down at the kitchen table. A part of him still felt weird, if not scared, about having his beloved mutant powers drained, but it was something he felt he had to do to feel like a good person again. A few moments ago, he had literally compared her to Satan. It was the least he could do. Plus, the effects of her 'adapted aura' were temporary. If they weren't, she wouldn't be working at a school for mutants; she'd be working for the government or the NYPD or something.
>> "There's not many of us out there, and most people are not aware how our powers work."
Andy couldn't help but internally cheer upon learning that there were not many adapted humans in existence, though he didn't dare to voice his opinion outloud or even smile. He simply nodded and looked down at what was left of his ice-cream. Then again, there were some mutants out there who used their powers for evil, so maybe a rise in adapted humans would be a good thing? In the wrong hands, though... Yeah, nevermind. Adapted humans were not and never would be a good thing. There were other, better ways of fighting bad mutants, such as the X-Men.
>> "Is that what's keeping you up so late? Is it an important one?"
Shit, Andy mentally cursed, his eyes wide in surprise, as he glanced down at the digital watch on his wrist. He had forgotten how late it was and let himself get distracted. "Yeah... It's kind of important." Oh, who was he kidding? It was really fuckin' important. If he couldn't pass Chemistry a second time, colleges would surely think he was stupid. He could even be held back... "Okay, it's really important, and I'm kind of freaking out about it," he admitted through a wide, toothy smile behind which he tried to hide all of his anxiety. "But it's going to be okay," he added, as though trying to convince himself. "I still got time..."
I mentioned it already in the Cbox last night, but to make it official...
I will be "gone" starting tomorrow (Friday) until August 24th. My plane gets back the 23rd. Going on summer vacay, finally. XD I'll try to post while I'm there (provided I have time and internet) and I'm going to try to crank a few posts out now, but I can make no promises.
Dressed in a t-shirt, khaki shorts and flip-flops, Andy was on his way to the pool. He had been training a lot lately, both his body and his powers, in the hopes of one day becoming an X-Trainee and fighting alongside the X-Men on real-live missions that could actually make a difference in the world. The idea of saving lives was just… unfathomable. He wanted to fathom it, though; he wanted to do good and be a part of something bigger than himself. It helped that he only was taking one summer class, which didn’t take too much of his time, mostly because he rarely ever opened his textbook to study. One of his assignments was also overdue, but he could worry about that later.
Right now, he needed a break.
It was a gorgeous day. The sun beamed down, gracing his tan skin as he casually walked along the grass. He was in no rush; he was in relaxation mode, enjoying every bit of fresh air he inhaled, though excited to go for a swim that did not involve using his powers. At least not too much.
He stopped dead in his tracks when he realized people were already in the pool. A lot of people. What’s going on? he wondered, wrinkling his brows in a mixture of surprise and confusion. Was there a pool party? Why didn’t anyone invite him? Then again, he was still relatively new to the school and still didn’t have many friends, so he couldn’t hold it against anyone. In fact, he was almost positive he didn’t know any of the students there, as far as he could see from where he was standing.
With a sigh, he mentally debated whether he should just turn tail and pray there wasn’t anyone in the indoor pool, which was much less frequently used by students, especially during the summer--and for good reason. Nothing beat swimming under the sun on a nice, warm day… which was why Andy really didn’t want to just turn tail. Besides, maybe the pool party could be fun? He’d even have some ‘party tricks’ up his sleeve.
Heaving a breath, Andy pushed forward. By the time he was about to enter the pool area, however, everyone seemed to be getting out of the pool and leaving. A small frown appeared on Andy’s face after they passed by him on their way toward the mansion. The only person that hung back was a man with short, slightly gray hair and a Miami Dolphins tank top that reminded him of home. He kicked back to read the newspaper, and as much as Andy didn’t want to disturb him he had to know why the party had ended so early, if it was a party at all.
Approaching the man, Andy gave a slight wave and said, “Hi, um…”
>> ”Fear not, I shall be out of your hair momentarily, I was merely taking a moment to relax after my class.”
“Your class?” Andy asked, raising his brow. In the water? “Like a water-based power training class?”
