The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The whole point of their dinner plan was, in theory, to avoid complications and surprises so things were kept easy for Javier to handle. They all should have known a surprise would find them, regardless of where they chose to have dinner and their inaugural meeting. It could have been a lot worse; Javier was not some kid who used to harass her in high school, nor was he someone Nessa had chewed out while she was in a bad mood. They had a friendly run in at a gay bar, which meant they were starting from a positive point. That was the good kind of surprise, right?
Also, it was fun to watch the rare utter look of confusion on Booker’s face.
While Booker processed the news, Nessa stepped toward Javier and accepted his hand, shaking it leisurely. It was a nice change of pace; she did not feel the need to death grip his hand like some of the guys Booker had brought home. Javier did not strike her as the type to mistreat a guy; if anything, she hoped Booker would be on his best behavior. Thankfully, Booker understood what life with anxiety was like, so perhaps they were really just a perfect pair.
Before she could chime in, Booker had already started teasing her while he worked on meal prep. He was always good at multitasking. ”Oh, be careful if you don’t want me to lead your boy here through a PowerPoint of Booker’s greatest embarrassing hits. I’m not above embarrassing you.”
She looked at Javier and grinned. ”Nice to see you again, Javi. Really. So now tell me, how did you and my goofball of a brother meet?” Booker had not yet given her all the details and she’d rather hear them from him.

Vanessa was starting to become more comfortable with her identity as a mutant. She was not ready to start wearing mutant t-shirts and opening up to total strangers, but she was coming clean to her friends and occasionally she would mention it with friends of friends. She was going on the assumption that the people she loved would not be friends with crappy people. Thus far, things had been going well, defying years and years of her panic and paranoia.
It was her intention to be clear to Booker's new boy that she was a mutant with mind reading abilities so she was not catching him off guard, but when the two finally returned to the kitchen, it turned out to be a moot point.
In Vanessa's defense, Javier was not an uncommon name in New York City; she had three in her homeroom freshman year. Booker mentioning that he was a mutant should have set off some bells in her head, but she did not expect the friendly young man from the X-Gene Persuasion to walk into the room, nestling close to Booker. "Hey you!" She flashed a genuine smile; from what she remembered, Javier was a good guy, which gave him a better starting point than most of Booker's significant others.
Booker, meanwhile, was justifiably confused. She turned back to stirring as she answered his curiosity. "So your boy and I may have crossed paths at a mutant gay bar once upon a time. Small world, right?"

Booker’s mood had been noticeably upbeat lately, and Vanessa was going to meet the man responsible for it. It was still disappointing that things with Jules were just not going to work out thanks to her power, but the way Booker had been floating around like some giddy Disney princess filled her with hope that Javier had the potential to be something great for her brother.
In the interest of protecting that potential, Booker convinced Vanessa that a planned meeting would be a good idea, considering their curse with significant others. Booker made it clear that Javier would handle it very poorly if she stumbled upon the two men in a compromising position, as Bookman siblings tended to do. Perhaps if they cut things off at the pass, she could be spared the horror of seeing Booker in the act again.
Booker was honest with Nessa and let her know about Javier’s anxiety, and Nessa wanted to do her part to be less of a bitch than was her standard. The plan was dinner, which Nessa was led to believe would be a fancy affair out at a restaurant. The notion perplexed her since that sounded like a much more stressful environment to throw Javier into, and her suspicions were confirmed when she walked out of her room in a nice dress only to find Booker casually making tacos. All cursing was well-earned by her jerk of a brother as she stormed off to change, quietly thankful Booker chose a more casual setting for the scene, even if he hid it from her until the last moment.
After changing into cutoffs and a red and white striped top, she returned to the kitchen and glared at Booker when he commented on her appearance. Before she could reply, there was a knock on the door and she begrudgingly accepted the role of food stirrer, along with the wooden spoon of her new position. ”Fine. But for the record? You’re a bag of dicks, Book.” He still gave her a kiss atop her head, and while she scrunched her nose, she did smile. It was nice to see Booker like this.
She heard Booker greeting Javier and he sounded… was that her brother nervous? That was interesting; Booker was a pretty confident guy, so she did not often experience him nervous. He must have really wanted things to go well with Javier tonight. She smiled, keeping quiet and awaiting the lovebirds entrance into the kitchen.

It was a relatively safe place to come out as a mutant, given the target clientele of the club, but it still felt like another weight off Nessa’s back. Every step she took to being out in the open with herself left her feeling more free. Nessa loved living her life unencumbered and on her own terms, and she never realized how much the big secrets of her life weighed her down.
She kept the man’s eye, too focused on their conversation to notice the goings-on of the bar, and was relieved to see thoughts of relating to her feelings. The lack of judgment proved she should make more of an effort to let more mutants into her life. Humans could be great; she worked with some great ones, after all. Still, mutants could get where she was coming from, and with where she was in her life, that felt invaluable.
Javier was positive and friendly, but his thoughts made it clear his mind was running twice as fast as his mouth. As someone who ran in nerdy circles, Vanessa was used to the thoughts of the socially awkward and anxious. Still, the way he was so concerned with being polite and appropriate was so earnest, Vanessa accidentally giggled. Perhaps a poor move, particularly when he was already questioning her mutation. That was, after all, the bigger test.
What did she have to lose? Things were going well so far. ”I’m a telepath, by the way. In case you might have been curious.” Which she knew he was. So now she got to find out how a stranger took the news that she could read their thoughts, for better or worse.

After picturing all the nightmare scenarios in her head for years, Nessa finally came clean to a girlfriend about her mutation. She was unsure of how Shelby or Chloe or any of her other exes would have reacted, but she felt fortunate beyond measure that Gina was the one she could be honest with. The gargoyle was handling the news so well, it put Nessa at ease. With that out of the way, what reason would she ever have to keep secrets from her girlfriend?
Now that the cat was out of the bag, Gina wanted to know how she was doing when it came to coming out with other people. Booker and Winnie were the other people who really mattered in her life, and Gina cared about Nessa being happy and loved by the people around her. ”So Winnie handled it well. We were… kinda drunk when I came clean. It honestly helped. Very sappy, sloppy best friend love. She’s annoyed that my power is better than hers though.” Winnie was adorable when she was in kiwi form, but she hated how impractical her power was, especially when she found out her bestie had mind reading capabilities.
”Booker was… a little more rough. He didn’t care that I was a mutant or a mind reader. His aura keeps me from reading his thoughts; it’s like he is in a bubble that my powers can’t pop.” In or out of his aura, there was no peeking into Booker’s mind, which was definitely for the best. ”He was upset that I kept it from him for so long and did not think I could tell him. He was right,” she admitted, disappointed with herself in hindsight.
She looked back up over the table and took Gina’s non-soup hand. ”That’s why I wanted to come clean to you, Gina. I did not want to carry a lie in secret from you anymore. I need to learn to trust the people in my life who matter. And Gina… you really matter.” She took a deep breath and met Gina’s eyes, finally ready to put everything she had into her relationship without holding anything back. ”I love you, Gina. I really and truly love you, and meeting you is one of the best things to ever happen to me.”

The women in Nessa’s life were vibrant and diverse. She dated people with strong personalities, for better or worse. It meant her exes were all memorable, with some being peculiar friends and some being dangerous reminders. Chloe was harmless; flighty, but well-intentioned. She did not cheat on Nessa or almost get her arrested, so she stayed above the bar set so low by some of her other girlfriends.
Paula had her own strong personality and, under different circumstances, she would be a prime candidate to join Nessa’s cabal of unusual exes. With Gina around, the idea of courting a Brazilian seductress still sounded fun, but it no longer tempted her the way it had before. Nessa was good at monogamy, but she was not immune to wandering thoughts. With Gina, though, the thoughts always returned to how lucky she was. Maybe it was a sign of her developing maturity. Maybe she just realized Gina was something she really did not want to screw up.
Booker seemed to appreciate his sister’s mature outlook, but something caught him. Even without her mind-reading, Nessa could tell something happened in his mind to change things. The reveal was worth it: her wonderfully oblivious brother had no clue that her coworker had a crush on him. It made Nessa laugh her signature throaty laughter.
Finally, Nessa set down the wooden spoon in her hand so she could wipe away her tear. ”He had a huge crush on you. We all teased him about it. His hair would turn red around you and we’d joke that he was trying to force himself not to blush.” Nessa shook her head and rolled her eyes. Dori was a pretty shy guy compared to most, but he was not the first or only example of Booker being unaware of someone’s interest in him. ”Really, Book, it’s a miracle you ever notice when people like you. How you stumbled your way into Juliette, I’ll never know.”

It was obviously uncomfortable to have someone intrude upon a situation where two women were unclothed. Even if it was their career to be naked in front of strangers, that did not mean they were not allowed privacy off-stage. It led to a rough start, but everyone seemed to be calming down. Alcohol always helped, as did Paige’s aura. With the intruder on their side of the mirror, her faux-mutation’s effects would start hitting the butch brunette.
The new girl was curious and Paige was not one to intoxicate someone without their knowledge (outside of work, at least.) ”It’s my mutation,” she lied, keeping her cover. Most people were oblivious to the affects Ambrosia was taking on her and they likely would be until they became far less subtle. A bridge to cross when she got to it.
”Being around me has a pleasant, boozy effect. Well, as long as you don’t stay for hours,” she added when Skye suggested her power had ‘no side-effects.’ Most people never had to worry about the effects of overexposure, though Paige still remembered the first bedmate she had while on Ambrosia. She… did not look great by the end of it. ”The girls who work here are all mutants. It’s a job requirement.”
While the newcomer was not going to join them at their job, Paige was not quite done with the girl. So much about her was still curious. Her job involved punching, she shifted genders and walked through mirrors, and she had an actual understanding of whatever might be going on with the tear in the world.
Paige grabbed a seat and wrapped an arm around the girl’s shoulders, taking a sip from the bottle before passing it over. ”Consider this pregaming. Or penance for peeping,” she joked playfully. ”I’d love to know what you know, and after that, there’s pretty much no way we’re not dragging you out for a night on the town, Little Miss…” It took Nessa a moment of thinking before she realized why she was drawing a blank, and the culprit was not her inebriated state. ”You still haven’t given me your name, cutie!”

There was something so cozy about it all, from the silly Christmas Sweaters to the recounting of old memories. Booker was happy with a woman who seemed to get him and enjoy the unique guy he truly was. Nessa had a girlfriend who was currently transformed into a soft, tan state and who was comfortable enough with staying nice and close on the couch; exactly where Nessa wanted her. She understood that life was unpredictable, but if things could be just the way they were every Christmas, she’d consider herself lucky.
As with any day of the year, Booker found ways to tease his little sister, calling her out for her impatient personality. He even tried to employ Gina to be a “good influence” and show her how to enjoy anticipation. Given their courtship, Vanessa thought that was worth a laugh. ”Please, if Gina’s taught me one thing, it’s that if I really want something, I should stop overthinking it.” She punctuated the sentence with a soft kiss on her girlfriend’s freckled cheek. ”So by that logic, it’s totally fine that I spent the past week looking for your gifts.”
It was clear that, when it came to Gina and Jules, Christmas was connected deeply to family. Memories with mothers and, in Gina’s case, siblings. Booker was wonderful, but she did envy the women who had such warm memories with their parents. She then remembered that they were all together, apart from their families. Instead of feeling envy, it was important that they shared the time and embraced the holiday with their loved ones.
Nessa took another sip of her mulled wine, (in line with her previously stated holiday tradition,) her other hand gently rubbing Gina’s knee. Juliette mentioned gifts, which was exciting in its own right because gift exchanging would definitely be a fun part of the night to share together. ”Not really. I mean, we did a gift exchange at work already, but in this house, we don’t do our unwrapping until tonight. Though I have a few guesses about what the big doof might have gotten me.” she said, eyeing her brother, who at this point would have known well enough to avoid her gaze.
”It was easier before he knew I was psychic. Now I can’t get him to look me in the eyes and I still haven’t figured out what his ‘big present’ for me is,” she grumbled, before turning back to Juliette, keeping her gaze at eye-level in case she could catch some thoughts. ”I do know what he got you,” she added in a singsong voice.
Resting her head on Gina’s shoulder, she spoke in a softer voice. ”And I promise, I’ve been avoiding spoilers from you,” she promised, still very much thrilled for her first Christmas gift exchange with her girlfriend.

Winnie could certainly paint a picture with words, which was possibly ironic given her actual career creating actual pictures with photography. Really though, Winnie knew how to spin a tale and with her free-wheeling lifestyle, there were often tales to spin.
The cheeky Brit had her misadventures and plenty were her fault, but this was a different story. She was mislead and lied to by a handsome man with no interest in treating any women right. Winnie knew all too well how Vanessa felt about cheaters and people who hurt her friends. And wannabe Captain Goldfish was both. The wife was a victim of the scene, but so was Winnie.
And it was bad. The affair was caught right in the middle of the action, surely traumatizing everyone not expecting it. Nessa could not even bring herself to make a comment about Winnie’s raunchy wordplay, because she was too focused on the mutant wife making her return home. The idea of an electric whip made Nessa wince; some mutations, like Winnie’s and Nessa’s powers, were relatively harmless. The power of lightning in the hands of a scorned wife was the kind of mutation that could have serious consequences.
Nessa reached over and brushed the top of Winnie’s head. ”Oh, honey, that’s awful. I’m just glad you made it out. I don’t care how massive this guy was—with muscles,” she quickly clarified, realizing how else her comment could be interpreted, ”You don’t deserve creeps like that using you. You deserve so much better. I’m sorry, Win.”

Nessa knew she would figure out how to get comfortable on the mutant scene eventually, but it was going to take her some time to get there. The guy she was talking to was a good start because he felt, to some degree, on her level. They were outsiders dipping their toes in the water, who were supposed to belong and needed to figure that part out.
The guy was a textbook introvert. There really were too many people and she could understand how stressful that could be. Nessa liked the dance floor because, despite the proximity of so many bodies, it really narrowed the world down for her. There were no words there; just dancing. ”It’s not really the bar or the people… it’s me.” She took a deep breath, followed by a long sip of her drink. Here went nothing! ”I’m used to gay clubs. I’m just… I’ve only recently ‘come out.’ As a mutant. Because I am and have been a mutant.”
It was out there to a total stranger and Nessa had to take another sip of liquid courage. ”So. Yeah.” She looked at his eyes, curious to know what would cross his mind. He was a mutant, after all; realistically, she was not expecting massive hate. If he realized she was reading his thoughts, that could be another story…

Bringing up Spencer was not cool; Nessa recognized it quickly after she spoke the words. Booker was kind enough not to grill her after Hurricane Spencer blew into town, seduced her, and convinced her to visit a tattoo parlor before she left town. Nessa did not want to divulge to her brother that she was such silly putty in Spencer’s hands, she was convinced to get her nipples pierced. Some stories did not need to be shared with her brother and that was definitely one.
When she backed down from the joke, Booker put down the fist he jokingly threatened her with to focus on their other exes. They were both on good terms with Shelby and Chloe, but they were all adults with their own busy lives. ”In my defense, Shelby can be hard to pin down. With how she travels for work,” she added hastily, realizing how her initial comment could be interpreted.
While Shelby was generally focused and grounded, Chloe was anything but. ”Yeah, that girl didn’t pan out. Things started all rainbows and fireworks, but when I caught up with her for coffee last month, it was over. They tried living together and she claimed ‘their domestic energies did not mesh well,’ or something. I’m betting it’s because Chloe doesn’t wash dishes.” Why clean when there was art to be created, after all?
It was very true that Vanessa left the door open in the past for exes to… well, regress with. Nostalgia was a powerful aphrodisiac that allowed one to temporarily forget why round one failed. It had been a while since she tried that with Shelby and Chloe though; they were finally at the point where they could be adult friends with minimal flirting.
Lexi was also relegated to minimal flirting given her supposed “straightness,” but one person never got the hang of minimal. Indeed, there was nothing minimal about Paula DeAlmeida. From her body to her personality, there was plenty going on and for a long time, she was the kind of kryptonite that made Nessa weak when she visited the Library.
Nessa took a breath to steel her nerves. She was going to swoon when Paula walked in. That was inevitable, but it would be the one concession. ”No. No, I’m glad you invited her if she has nowhere else to be. I can handle a tall Brazilian goddess. I have Gina now and honestly, I think that’ll make this okay. Less weird, at least.” Being in a relationship did not make Nessa blind, but it did put things into perspective. Paula was steamy and sexy, but so was Gina, and they had something special Nessa did not want to screw up. ”I can be friends with Paula like a real, honest adult without turning into a puddle. I mean, Dori had that huge crush on you and you managed to remain friends,” she pointed out, bringing the pot for pasta to a boil.
It was Christmas time and Vanessa was in the holiday spirit. Vanessa liked Christmas, but she also knew it was one of Gina’s favorite times of the year, making it all the more special. Gina’s mother was going to visit in a few days, which was exciting all on its own, if not a little nerve-wracking. Vanessa did not often get to be the girl who was introduced to parents, so she was just hoping for the best. Thankfully, those thoughts could be put on hold for the night.
It was Christmas Eve and they decided to enjoy a nice, quiet evening celebrating with the people who mattered most. Nessa and Booker were playing host to the two women in their lives, Gina and Jules respectively. It had been a banner year for the Bookman siblings in the love department, so both of them saw this Christmas as a special occasion.
After the bump in the road that was their first meeting, Nessa had grown to like Jules, particularly for Booker. She was a good person, which was enough to ignore her friendship with Rebecca. She even earned credit for her daring and funny Christmas sweater, though Nessa was raising her own ugly sweater game as well.
Nessa accepted a mug of mulled wine from Jules, taking a moment to embrace the scent. She was on the couch, curled up beside a more-human looking Gina thanks to her brother’s aura. Vanessa was never one to shy from cuddling and PDA, so she hoped Gina was getting used to that alright.
The apartment was warm, with lights strewn along walls and doorways and a decorated tree in the corner of the living room that came just shy of reaching the ceiling. (Nessa specifically remembered telling Booker the tree would be too tall only for him to smugly shut her down when they arrived him and it was, of course, perfect.) A delicious Christmas dinner was cooking, so the whole apartment was filled with delicious scents. What was not to love?
Embracing the holiday mood, Jules asked about holiday traditions, which sent Nessa’s mind to a rare place: her youth. ”Hm. Well, when I was like thirteen, we started going to a friend of the family for Christmas Eve parties. They had this amazing punch they made every year,” she recalled, still kicking herself for never obtaining the recipe. ”I didn’t realize the first year that it was alcoholic. So every year, we went to their house and I would end up drinking a bunch with their daughter until we went to midnight mass all wobbly.” Admittedly, mass was always far more intriguing under the influence of alcohol, which was a sentiment she doubted her parents would have appreciated.
”Now I usually skip the mass and keep the drinking,” she added, following it with a sip of her mulled wine. ”Oh, and we’d always get back home and open up gifts that night. As far as I’m concerned, going to sleep and opening up gifts in the morning is blasphemy.” To be fair, Nessa was also not a patient person, particularly in her youth.
