The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

There were so many rules and sayings in the ViewTube community and creators in general, and all the important ones revolved around the comments section. You cannot make everyone happy. The more people see you, the more people are going to hate on you, so don’t let it get to you. If you live and die on each comment, you won’t survive. Nessa was used to being a gay woman on the internet with a “combative personality,” so she was good at remaining ambivalent to the hate she might be receiving on the internet.
Nessa’s last personal video was something she was emotionally invested in because it was literally her bearing her identity and her soul for the internet to see. There was plenty of support and private messages from trans girls and young mutants thanking her for being so open, and those were the comments Nessa was trying to focus on.
”Oh, come the f*** on! Attention grab?! F*** you!”
It was too easy to linger on the worst of her commenters and wonder what would compel someone to go out of their way and bash someone. She was good at acting above it all, but some of the comments really did hurt. Fake lesbian. Deceitful, both as a woman and a “human.” Poor, confused boy. Abomination. Mistake. Some of those insults hit hard, and Nessa’s best way to deal with hurt was to turn it into anger, so she was on her bed, scrolling through comments on her tablet and loudly cussing at people who could not hear her.
It was better than making a response video to the hate and causing more of a sh**storm, but it was not the healthiest way to handle the problem. Nessa just had no other ideas off the top of her head for how to feel better and get over it.

The letter arrived to the home of Buck and Libby Bookman in an inconspicuous letter.
Hello,
It’s been a very long time, and I have written and rewritten this letter so many times over the last few years, and I’m still not 100% sure exactly what I want to say, but it’s too late to keep putting that off, so here goes nothing.
I am doing well, first of all—I want you to know that, since your letter seemed to imply you were curious. I am working a job I love with people who support me. Booker’s still great, as always. I have a gorgeous girlfriend I love. I’m living a happy New York City life as a proud woman.
I’m not sure if you are reaching out because you want to accept me, or if you feel obliged to after all these years. I’m also not entirely sure if I want to be your daughter again. I’m damn sure not your son, no matter what you might want to believe. But I need you to know who I am, and that I’m proud of the woman that is.
It’ll be public knowledge soon, but unless I really screw up the release time and delivery dates, you should be getting this letter first. I’m coming out publicly as a transgender woman, like I should have done a long time ago.
I am also coming out as a mutant, because as it turns out, I have been one all my life. I should have told you before this, if only because it isn’t something I should have had to hide, but I was young and scared of what you would do. I tell you now because it’s been holding me back for too many years, and I wanted to get that off my chest.
So you can send a letter back, or you can ignore this and throw it away, or you could publicly disown me for all I care, but I’m going to live my best and truest life, and I wanted you to know that.

”I don’t want to hide or be ashamed of who I am,” Vanessa reiterated. ”I have been hiding a lot of self-doubt or worry that the people around me would not accept who I was, which is dumb, because the people in my life are awesome. Sadly, I did not have the best start. My parents obviously did not accept me being trans, but there was more they did not know that they would have been upset if they found out. I knew it from the way they talked and the way they reacted to the news. Being trans in this day and age is not easy, but there’s one thing a larger majority of people have issues with, and that was the other thing I discovered about myself as an adolescent.”
Vanessa looked directly into the camera and spoke clearly and confidently. ”I am a mutant.” There was a pause as she seemed to visibly shiver on screen. ”Woah, that feels weird to say on camera. I’ve only started telling the people in my life recently. Booker, Gina, the rest of The POW Block Party. I kept it from them longer than I should have, and I’ve apologized to them all, because I should never have thought so lowly of them to think I could not be honest.”
Raised her hands up, as though questioning her own statement. ”So what is my mutation, you ask? Well, that’s personal, but since we’re all friends here, I’ll fill you in. I’m a telepath.” The brunette pointed to her dark brown right eye and continued. ”When I make eye contact, I automatically start to hear the thoughts in someone else’s head. It’s not something I can turn off, so this is also my blanket apology for anyone I’ve had to make eye contact with in the last decade. I promise I stopped judging all the weird thoughts people had a while ago. Most people have them, and if I didn’t come to terms with that, I would have lost my mind at seventeen.”
Vanessa sighed. ”I know this is divisive. Being a telepath is a huge responsibility and I’ve been doing a poor job of living up to that because I’ve been so concerned with pretending this was just my secret to keep. I am a mutant, and that’s not a bad thing. I’m just a person who wants to be happy like everyone else, and I can do a thing very few people do. Try to be merciful in the comments, as I’m figuring out how to be an out mutant. There’s a lot of hate out there for mutants… for my people.” It was a strong claim of ownership of an identity she had been keeping to herself for so long.
”I’m proudly gay. I’m proudly trans. I’m proudly a mutant. And if you’re watching this video, whether you’re a straight, gay, bi, ace, queer, trans, cis, nonbinary, mutant, a human, something else entirely, please be proud and know I love you. Well, unless you’re an asshole to people for being any of those things. In that case, ya know, f*** you. Anyway, yeah, seeya!” Nessa gave the camera a quick wave and the video ended.

Leaning forward, Vanessa rested her elbows on her knees and propped her chin up on her hands. ”Growing up was not easy when I was approaching my teenage years. This is known by some people who know me or used to know me, and I know there are rumors, but I do want to officially come out and say it: I am a trans woman.” Nessa sat up straighter, a weight lifting from her.
”I’m really fortunate that I am as passing as I am, and I want to acknowledge that and shout out to any trans sisters or brothers who aren’t, because you’re still wonderful and valid. I grew up feeling out of place and not quite right, and I grew up with parents who thought I was going through a phase and eventually kicked me out because I was going to pursue a medical transition. I was lucky to have some friends who had my back through that hard time, and no one was better to me than my brother, Booker, who is my family, and who has always supported me as his sister. The other members of The POW Block Party and the people close to me all know this, but I want the community to know, because I don’t want any trans followers to think they have to hide who they are to be loved.”
There was a jump cut where Nessa clearly took a sip of water and composed herself between cuts, as she returned setting down a water bottle on the side table. ”I really am not looking forward to the comment section of this video. I trust so many of you to be amazing and supportive and good to each other and me. Sadly, I can feel the oncoming storm of hate and trolls here. The transphobes, the alt right, the far right, the TERFs, the cis gay girls that might call me a ‘liar’ or something. I’m already bracing for it, and it’s gonna suck. That being said, they might not make up the bulk of the hate, because I do have one more big thing I need to share.”

Video Title: [Nessa Comes Out (No Seriously, Keep Watching)] The video began without the typical chiptune jingle or intro, instead fading into the recording room of the Bookman house. The video game themed wall art was still in the background, but the camera was focused on Vanessa Bookman sitting in the center of the couch.
Vanessa smiled and waved at the camera. ”Hello everybody, it’s Nessa from Pixel Rainbows and The POW Block Party, and I’m not playing video games today. Well, I am, but not, you know, on camera. Okay, I’m on camera, but I’m not—“
There was a jump cut to Nessa laying out on the couch, groaning to herself. ”Why am I such a spaz today?”
The camera jump cut back to Nessa sitting up straight again. ”Okay, trying this again. I’m admittedly nervous because I’ve never done a coming out video. Everyone knows I’m a lesbian because I came onto the gate on ViewTube with that being public knowledge. So it’s actually surprisingly intimidating to have a video where I’m going to come out twice.”
Vanessa grew more serious, steadying her breath since the entire video was obviously unscripted. ”So I pride myself on being me, but I’ve been accepting that I’ve done it with the things that are obvious. I’m obviously gay. I’m obviously a catty bitch. I can wear those titles proudly since it’d be hard to hide those things. In truth, there are parts of my life I only shared with the people who knew me well, and a part of my life I’ve only told to a handful of people, and even then, only recently. So here are the parts of my story I want to share because I do think they matter to the kids out there who are like I was and should be proud for it.”

Vanessa had already spoken to Benny, the CEO of The POW Block Party, and he was going to be sending out a company email when she was ready, but it was important for her to do something face-to-face first. The members of her recording team in the Let’s Play division of the company were some of her closest friends. Booker was her only family and Gina was earning a special place in her life, but her team had earned to right to be considered brothers in their own way.
There was a lull in production where everyone was gathered together for lunch. Their last video was a hectic shooter guessing game and they spent the last ten minutes of it enduring the scents of hot hero sandwiches. Someone ran out to everyone’s favorite Italian sandwich place, and the scents of meatballs, chicken, veal and eggplant parm filled the air. The team of six gathered up once the cameras and recording feeds were closed.
Everyone was starving, including Vanessa, but she was too nervous to start eating right away. In an uncharacteristically quiet voice, she piped up. ”Hey guys, can I say something?”
“Can I eat my sandwich while you say this?” Johnny asked it lightly, but he was surprised to notice Nessa’s unsure expression. “Sorry. What’s up?”
”No, no, it’s okay. I just… you guys have been so good to me since I’ve been here, and I wanted to be honest with everyone.”
The guys all had their sandwiches set down, listening in curiously. “Of course,” Jamie said with almost fatherly concern. They were not used to Nessa getting serious like this.
The girl of their group gulped. ”I’ve been… keeping something to myself for a long time, but I’m finally being open with the people who matter, and you guys… well, matter. So, here it is: I’m a mutant.”
She expected silence, but it was quickly broken by a British-tinted, “Woah.”
“David,” Vince spat.
“What? I didn’t see that coming! It’s cool, but I didn’t guess.”
Jamie rolled his eyes. “Why would you have guessed?”
“I dunno. I thought I had good mutant guessing capabilities. I knew Dori was one!”
“My hair changes color, you idiot.”
While the boys bickered, Gian had stood up and walked over to Nessa. The tattooed, mustachioed man wrapped the younger woman in a tight hug. “Nessa, we’re gonna be here to supp—wait, is this a mutation that is bad for hugging?”
Nessa was already feeling teary eyed in the hug, shaking her head. ”No, I’m just a telepath.”
“Oh, good, a—wait, really?” The guys all shifted and looked at each other awkwardly. “Um, sorry.”
Nessa laughed, realizing what they were all thinking. ”You’re all fine. It’s only when I make contact, and… people have weird thoughts. I promise it was only ever surface-level stuff.”
Gian chuckled as the other guys got up to join in hugging their teammate. “Well, dicks. Okay, try to ignore when you accidentally catch the dirty s*** in our heads, but otherwise, we’re here for you.”
”Thanks. I love you bastards.”
“Aww.” There was a pause before Johnny finally asked, “So now can we eat our lunch, Miss Dramatic Reveal?”

Nessa had to remember that Gina was not accustomed to showing up in internet videos for crowds of people she would never meet. Easing Gina into things would be best for her, so she did not feel overwhelmed. Fortunately, there were enough people on camera that she did not have to endure all of the attention. The guys would help.
All that said, it was adorable for Gina to address the audience, clearly unfamiliar with the protocol of speaking to someone she could not see.
Dori was a sweetheart, and he might have had a soft-spot for Gina as a fellow mutant, so he redirected an easy question to her. She smiled in his direction and he reciprocated, his hair absentmindedly changing from blue to green.
>> “Oh, I mean, Nessa’s introduced me to some stuff, but I, uh, hadn’t really gamed much before meeting her, so I’m not much good… yet.”
“So she’s like David but pretty and with wings?”
“Oy!”
Nessa rolled her eyes at Vince and David, dismissing what was their typical teasing. ”Nah, because Gina’s actually getting better. Watching her play The Standford Parable and some of those story games is the first time I think I’ve enjoyed them, and she’s getting the hang of some platformers, too. Oh, and board games; the girl hands my ass to me in board games.”
“Good, we’ll teach her how to play Giuseppe Festivities and she can be our secret weapon against you.”
”No turning my girlfriend against me!” Nessa pouted and looked up at Gina. ”Promise not to use your many talents against me, no matter what David says?”

Paige awoke with a headache. She usually did; her powers had faded over the night, but she was still stuck with the aftereffects of a night of drinking. Her stomach had woken her up. Pains in her stomach were growing more frequent as time went on, and she knew too well it was tied to the symptoms of excessive use of Ambrosia. She was stuck in an awkward spot; the Ambrosia was killing her, but if she stopped taking it, her employer might kill her first. More than that, she still loved the feeling Ambrosia gave her. To live as a mutant. To more easily forget the past.
She untangled herself from Skye. Over the months, her fellow dancer was the only woman who was allowed to know Paige’s secret. Skye was the only person Paige trusted with the truth of her humanity, and because of that, they were made closer for it. Paige reached over the woman’s body for the glasses on the nightstand. Another effect of the Ambrosia; her eyesight was deteriorating, so whenever she was not on stage, she was now wearing glasses.
Letting her friend, or whatever Skye was now, rest in bed a while longer, Paige threw on a pair of shorts and a shirt that rested off one shoulder. She sauntered into the kitchen, turning on the television and the coffee maker. Over the soft hum of her coffee brewing, she caught the tail end of a news report. ”There is no saying if this will stop or if this ends with the closing of the Rift we all grew used to for the past year. We will be bringing you ongoing coverage of the shrinking Rift throughout the day.”
Paige stood there, stunned. Ever since Gawain-then-Maya made an appearance at the club, Paige had been considering making her way over to the other world for one reason: Booker. She had asked one of the girls working on the other side to look into the possibility of a Booker Bookman living in the other world. It was possible the name would be different, but she had to find out. And when she did, she had to spend months wondering about her alternate universe brother.
She always found reasons not to go visit him. He was not her Booker; not really. He might have his own Paige, or might not have a sister at all. And what if he saw her and he was just… disappointed. That fear kept Paige from making a move.
Now, though… now her window was closing. She wondered what to do; what if the Rift was closing forever? She ran the risk of being displaced from her own life for the chance of knowing the man who was sort of her brother? It was a weighty choice to make. When she left the apartment, she was still undecided, but she did have her wallet and her ID in her back pocket, just in case.
She finally made it to the Rift, and even as it shrank, it still put the feeling in her gut that something was wrong. Maybe it was best that she just return to her apartment, curl up with Skye, and—
It was him. Through the Rift, it was hard to tell right away, and he looked older than she remembered, but sitting there, eating ice cream without a care in the world, was Booker.
Paige did not know what she was going to do and her feet seemed to move on her own, but before she realized it, she was running toward him. She would deal with the consequences and what could and could not be undone later, but she saw her brother there and she had to give herself the chance to get to know him. She could almost feel the pull of the Rift, ready to bring her over to the other side.
And then it was gone. Paige actually tripped at the unexpected shift, leaving nothing in front of her but her New York City. She looked around in a panic, but she knew in her heart she had not made it. Booker was nowhere to be seen. There was a numbness that filled her as reality hit her. She had a chance and it was gone now.
“Do you need help getting to your feet, dear?”
Paige looked up at an older gentleman offering her a hand and accepted it with a polite nod, but she did not speak. The Rift was closed. Booker was dead, but the Rift did not change that. She did not have her brother, but maybe she could take solace in knowing he was out there in another reality, alive and happy and eating ice cream. Maybe if she focused on that, the pit in her stomach would go away.

Javier’s reaction was understandable; he knew the risks of coming out to anyone as a mutant. It was not a decision Nessa made lightly, but it was one she felt was necessary if she really wanted to live an honest, open life. Booker took the news more in stride, responding with the teasing she could always expect from her brother. She had his support; it just came with a healthy side of playful antagonism.
”It’s not my fault games like that get so popular because the masses have terrible taste.” She scowled, but it faded into a smile. ”Really though, it’s time, I think. Everyone who matters to me knows, and I can hardly say I’m an out and proud mutant if I’m trying to hide it.”
Nessa bit into her taco, letting bits of shell fall to her plate as she chewed on her perfectly cooked meal. One day someone, (hopefully Javier,) would whisk Booker away to another apartment and Nessa would be deprived of having an excellent cook around when she was feeling lazy. Until that day, she would take advantage of his kindness when it was an option. ”I’ve always spoken up about how more queer women being prevalent in the gaming space was good for girls and gays interested in gaming. I guess I just feel like I can be doing more for more people.” Representation mattered, and Nessa had an obligation to do her part.
”Plus, I’m lucky enough to have some real support in my life for however this goes. I have a beautiful supportive girlfriend, some great friends, and a brother who pretends to hate me while secretly tolerating me.” She smirked at the men at the table. ”I’m a lucky gal. As is Booker, or, you know, guy. You’re too good for him, Javier,” she joked. ”Glad you came around tonight.”

Nessa was not the subtlest of people, and she was transparent when it came to arguing or compelling, but that worked with Gina. Honesty was the hallmark of their relationship, so if Nessa wanted Gina to do something, the best move was to be honest about how much she wanted her to do it. And then to whine and be adorable.
Inevitably, she won and Gina let her know how unfair she was in her thoughts. Nessa kissed her cheek closer to the top of her jawline so she could whisper in her ear, ”Oh, I know.” She took Gina’s hand and led her to the couch.
Nessa’s return was met with a chorus of “Finally!” from her friends, which she met with a single well-chosen finger. Gina was met with a much nicer chorus of greetings. Dori was especially nice, being the mutant member of the team and all around cinnamon roll of a person.
Taking her seat at the end of the couch, Nessa patted her lap. ”Right here works. These guys could use a handicap because I’m just too good at this mostly-luck based game.” Vince naturally called that bulls**t but Nessa ignored him. Since she was at the end of the couch, Gina could sit on her lap at an angle, letting her wings out off the couch so they were not in the way. Nessa had gotten better at accounting for her girlfriend’s mutation with little aspects of life.
Taking her controller back (and finally taking her turn,) Nessa spoke into the camera as her character hit a dice block on screen. ”For those of you who haven’t heard me getting all sappy and gushing about my girlfriend, this is Gina. She makes amazing clothes and she makes me happy because she’s basically the best thing ever.”
“Then what’s she doing with you?” Vince retorted.
”She’s with me because I’m charming as s***, d***face,” she said smugly. She placed a hand on Gina’s knee, hoping she was not too anxious about being on camera. ”She even brought a cute little picnic for when this is over. It’s all very adorable and gay.”
“Everything about you is very gay,” David pointed out.
”Yeah, but Gina brings the adorable. She’s a vital part of it all.”
“So Gina, do you play games?” Dori asked inquisitively. “It’ll do my heart good to know you’re kicking her ass when she’s off camera.”

It was refreshing for Nessa to have her biggest secret out in the open for Gina. She sometimes felt like a woman made of secrets: she was trans, she was a mutant, she was a telepath. Having that last tidbit on the table was not just a relief, it allowed for a more open relationship. It also let the two girlfriends enjoy secret communication, even if it could only go one way. Gina was polite, but she was also not too sorry that she appeared to surprise her girlfriend with a romantic lunch. Her silent addendum made Nessa grin from ear to ear and earned Gina another kiss.
”The girl at the door’s actually our intern, Carey. She’s covering the desk today. Interns were so darn handy. Gina explained why she was at the studio and Nessa felt a swell of mushy, warm love in her chest followed by a hungry pang in her stomach. ”I absolutely have not eaten yet because we’ve been playing this ****ING GAME FOR HOW LONG?” Her volume escalated at the end to call back to the couch.
“Over three bloody hours!” David replied.
”Three hours, she repeated at a normal volume, though she was sure the mic still picked her up. ”We’re almost done, and I would love to have cute lunch time with you.”
“Hey Nessa, quit being gay and get back to the game!”
”Absolutely impossible!” she replied jovially to Vince. Nessa looked back to Gina and kissed her cheek. ”You’re fine, babe. You’re welcome to crash my office whenever. In fact… There was a mischievous glint in her eye and she tugged on her girlfriends hands, taking a step back toward the couch. ”We’re in the last turns anyway. Hop on the cam with us!” It was not unheard of for significant others to make video cameos; heck, Becca came on for a collab or two, not that Nessa watched those videos. ”Pleeeeease?”

Nessa came from such humble beginnings, and she was well known in such a new and ever-evolving medium, it still felt weird when people hit her with the “internet celebrity” moniker. It was true; she was recognizable by a weird but not insignificant portion of the population. Her face and quotes were on merchandise. There were compilation videos of her “best moments,” which was a trip in and of itself since she would argue she had no best moments.
The best way to handle it was to be humble, but not falsely modest. ”Somehow, yeah. Booker can attest, I get animated when I play video games. Thankfully, there are people that love that kind of personality and will spend hours a week watching me yell at pixels and co-workers.” The world she lived in was a bizarre one, to say the least.
Nessa had promised she would not intentionally read Javier’s mind, but she was pretty sure Booker underestimated the burden that was an “always on” power. It was natural to look a person in the eyes, particularly when you made a habit of it your entire life. She did not catch much; when Booker got a hair too far, which he did rarely, she caught snippets. Javi seemed pleased to be doing “well” in their conversation, which was honestly sweet. Not as sweet as stray thoughts of what seemed like respect for what she did or what she dealt with.
Oh, the comments sections. Booker had to chime in about a recent comment blitz, and Vanessa glared at him. ”Yeah, a debate started by our personal channel, for some reason. The only people on your side are the fans who want to see me rage,” she reminded him indignantly.
She sighed and took her seat, quick to grab a tortilla to start compiling ingredients for a delicious shrimp taco. ”They can get nasty, honestly. Sometimes it’s just trolls. Other times it’s people who want to throw homophobic or sexist comments about the gay gamer girl ‘diversity hire.’” There was some extra disgust on that last phrase she caught in a recent video, literal years after her hire date. ”It’s a vocal minority. Most of the fans are chill and supportive.”
With some lemon, pico de gallo, salsa verde, and guac, she took her first delicious bite of the taco and had to commend Booker for making one almost as good as her own. ”At least, I hope there are more of the latter than the former. If not, it’s gonna be a real b***h when I come out as a trans mutant in my upcoming video,” she admitted nonchalantly.

There were drawbacks to being a public figure on the internet, from the lack of privacy to the stream of hate from anonymous critics. It was an undeniable fact that there were plenty of challenges and problems that came from a life in entertainment, particularly on such a fickle platform as the internet. All that being said, when part of her work day involved four hours of Giuseppe Festivities.
Okay, to be fair, that had its own drawbacks. The minigame-heavy video game was always a blast with a group of friends, and Vanessa firmly believed she worked with friends. The fifty turn setting, however, was akin to a mental and emotional marathon of betrayal and competitiveness.
Since much of the office was off for the day, the remaining members of The POW Block Party Let’s Play team had moved a couch to one of the monitors, set up a camera, and decided to knock out the most time consuming of their planned videos. Nessa, David, Vince, and Dori were all sitting on the extra-large couch the team purchased for games like this, and on Turn Forty-Six, they were all showing signs of losing their minds.
“Wha? Vince, no, no—”
“Vince, YES!”
Collective groans and shouts.
”Not me, not me, hit Dave, he sucks!”
“Wha—Nessa!”
Anticipatory silence.
Collective shouting and David’s voice reaching a new octave as he yells, “SOD OFF, YOU F***NUGGET!”
”Suck it, Limey!”
On the other end of the office, away from the shouting, Johnny removed his headset at Gina’s entrance. He was trying against all odds to get some editing done despite the insanity. Johnny recognized Gina based on Nessa’s descriptions and nodded, shouting toward the other side of the room, “Nessa! Your girl’s here!”
”Huh?” Vanessa looked back over the couch and spotted a familiar face, her eyes immediately lighting up. ”Gina!” With enthusiasm, Nessa hopped over the back of the couch and ran over to her girlfriend.
“Ah! Nessa, hit A first!”
”F*** you, you can wait!”
Vince grumbled to himself, remarking that, “It’s not like we’re three and a half hours into this thing…”
Nessa ignored the comment, knowing he was playing it up for the camera, and still not caring. Gina was there! Their relationship was still one of the most satisfying aspects of her life, and she was sure one of the boys would hit A on her controller so they could continue until the next minigame.
Wrapping her girlfriend up in a tight hug, Nessa planted a kiss square on those full grey lips. ”I didn’t know you were planning on dropping by! Not a complaint, by the way. What’s up? Just down in the village?”

Nessa could be rough around the edges; it was a flaw she would freely admit to. Crass comments, blunt delivery, and occasionally rude questions were all not unheard of for her. If she wanted to be difficult, she would have gladly done so, but she was making a real effort. They were going to eat delicious tacos and her brother managed to bring someone home she trusted the intentions of, so there was no real reason to be a challenge.
She was going to be a team player, but she was still going to tease Booker. She wanted Javier to get a genuine impression of them together, and genuine for Nessa and Book meant bickering and teasing.
Javier freely admitted to knowing about Booker’s dorkiness, which boded well for the pair; he saw her brother at his nerdiest and did not go running. Booker took the moment to ham it up and act betrayed, and Nessa promptly rolled her eyes at the display.
They were settling into small talk, with Javier explaining his job as a tailor with some budding cosplay experience. Booker was weaving in and out of the room, so Nessa was instinctively doing her best to maintain eye contact with Javier. She did not want to pry, but at the same time, she had a decade of life experience that made her most comfortable when she could peer into someone’s thoughts. If Booker strayed just far enough away from her and Javier, she could get small snippets of what was going on in that handsome shaved head of his.
Fair was fair, of course, and Javier was curious about what Vanessa did for a living. She loved talking about her job, but it was not always easy to explain to people who were not familiar with the online entertainment space. ”Well, I am a member of an online production company. I do a few things, honestly. Some small animation and editing work. But mostly, I am an online personality for our content.” Which sounded very vague and could mean anything from making websites to smut films. ”It mostly amounts to being snarky when I host one of our podcasts and yelling at people as we play video games online for peoples amusement.”
She nodded, very curious what Javier might be thinking about her job. ”It’s a very awesome, very weird job.”

Booker’s luck with partners was hit or miss. There were real sweethearts he had dated, with Jules being the latest in the line of them. There was a reason Vanessa also dated Chloe and Shelby, after all. On the other end of the spectrum, Booker had dated manipulative, selfish jerks. (And for no justifiable reason, she dated Spencer, and could attest to her being a train wreck nightmare.)
Now she could breathe a sigh of relief. Javier was a total gentleman to her and everything about the way he walked and talked made it hard to see him as a jerk, (unless he was the world’s most impressive actor.) New York found a way to bring people together in odd ways, and the longer Nessa lived in her home city, the more she accepted it had its own strange powers. She should have known Booker would walk in with someone she would know. >> "I have a younger brother. I know how that works." >> ”See? Javier knows the trouble that comes with dealing with a evil sibling,”
Nessa took a seat and shrugged. ”Hey, I’ve already accepted I’m the evil sibling. Pretty sure if we polled our parents and our friends, it’d be a unanimous vote,” she joked. ”Doesn’t mean I can’t sling a little mud on the golden boy. Oh, and let him get dinner ready alone, since someone decided to screw with me tonight,” she added, glaring at her brother to remind him that she had not just forgotten his misleading tactics.
She would, however, set that aside so she could get the story of how the two handsome men crossed paths. Of course it was some adorable meet-cute at a farmer’s market. It had all the makings of the opening chapters for a successful gay romance novel. A very nerdy one, apparently, as the two ended up working on a cosplay.
Nessa was already grinning; given Booker’s hobbies, a boyfriend who could help out with a cosplay was a major selling point. ”Right, the bandit shirt! So you’re the genius behind that one.” Nessa looked Javier in the eyes, shaking her head in disappointment. ”You know, you’re not making this easy for me, Javi. If you already know what a massive dork my brother is, that takes away a lot of my ammunition to tease him with.” Nessa would just have to work harder to pick something to give Booker a hard time about; she had confidence in her ability to do that.
”So that’s what you do, then? A tailor and fulfiller of geek dreams? Do you do any cosplaying of your own, or are you mainly the man behind the scenes?” Behind every great cosplayer was a great tailor.
