The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It had been quite the year. Well, give or take a few extra months. Letting Gina go to California alone was a remedied mistake almost immediately. She took a good hard look at herself and asked if she would regret it for the rest of her life. She knew right away she would, so she made plans to move out to the coast with her.
The reason they moved there was unfortunate, but it was hard for Nessa to pretend she did not love her time in California. Gina’s home town was as lovely as she described, and after meeting Gina’s mother, Nessa felt like she had an actual mother-figure in her life for the first time in years. And, of course, being with Gina was like a dream she did not want to let go.
Then again, life was weird and chose to took turns when you least expected it. Those most recent turns had Nessa and Gina on a plane heading back to New York. With any major move came some nerves, but Nessa chose to see this as things stabilizing. A return to where they came from, together.
Nessa would not call herself a veteran flier, but she knew what she was doing. The POW Block Party had sent her to conventions and occasional off-set productions, and she quickly established her flight habits and stuck to them.
And so, yes, she was asleep, but flight sleep was a delicate thing. It was not like she could get truly comfortable in those seats. When the warmth of a body pressed against her skin, Nessa’s eyes fluttered open. In most situations, if someone was touching her on a plane, that was no Bueno.
But not this flight. Glancing down, Nessa smiled at the curly hair of the girl settling on her shoulder. Sheepishly kissing the top of Gina’s head, she whispered, ”PDA on a plane? Aren’t you worried about making the businessmen and vacationers jealous?” She stifled a yawn with the shoulder Gina was not occupying, before asking, ”I thought you were going to just occupy yourself for the flight?”

The seconds waiting for a reply felt like anxious hours. Nessa was unsure if she would be more scared for herself or Booker if she really was at own, but fortunately, she was not. Booker did not sound like he was in the best condition, but knowing he was alive banished some of her darker worries. Now she could focus on the worries on her plate.
She had no clue where she was or what happened to them. They were knocked out and taken. It was the opening premise to a movie, not what she should be doing with her day off. ”I don’t know what’s going on; I’m blindfolded. Can you see?” The words came out slowly. Her head was still foggy from whatever was used to knock her out. She hated being so unaware of her surroundings. She couldn’t mind read and she could not see. Not that she knew if there was anyone to read.
That realization sank in; she did not know who was in there with them. ”Is anyone else here? What do you want from us?” The young woman called out, possibly calling to an empty room.
Frustrated, Nessa tipped herself over, trying to press her head against the cool flooring. She could not know how well the blindfold was secured on her. If she was really lucky, maybe she could loosen it or move it off one of her eyes. ”Book, are you okay? Did they hurt you?” She was ready to start hating someone, but she had no inkling of who the “they” in their situation was.

Nessa was in a good place in her life, all things considered. She had a good job, a support structure, and she was living openly and proudly. Then, of course, there was Gina. The young gargoyle had worked her way into Nessa’s heart and become one of the best parts of her life. Nessa was always a romantic at heart, and Booker would point out her trademark ability to fall head over heels for a woman, but it was hard to see how Gina was not just… worth it.
Of course, being with an amazing girl meant being an amazing girlfriend to really do right by her. Gina texted about her awful day and her plans to counter that bad day with froyo. Nessa was just working on some design ideas for new tshirts for the merch store, so she had plenty of time. She typed up a quick message. “Oh babe, I’ll meet you at the usual place ASAP. See you soon. Love you!” And without delay, she was out the door.
Nessa saw Gina waiting for her outside the shop. She wasted no time wrapping arms around Gina’s waist and leaning down to kiss her. She looked her girlfriend over, realizing she must have been having a rough day. Something about her expression, even without being able to see her eyes, left Nessa feeling disheartened. She hated anything that would hurt Gina, so she was here to be supportive and help her through it.
”Likewise, gorgeous,” she replied, kissing the tip of Gina’s nose. ”Why don’t we get snacks and you can tell me what’s up? I’ve got all the time in the world.”

Vanessa’s attention was stubbornly checking on the people at the other table. It was probably rude, but something just struck her as off. It would put her mind at ease if she could get eye-to-eye contact and catch a glimpse in their heads. It was invasive, but it undeniably granted peace of mind to see someone’s intentions.
She missed the two people walking out of the shop because she was pre-occupied. They were the ones who walked to the Bookman table. Before she could react, she felt a prick on her neck. Her vision quickly darkened as she saw something similar happening to Booker. The two at their own table were getting up, but they were already fuzzy black blobs in Nessa’s vision by that point. She was out.
Eventually Nessa stirred, feeling like she was suffering the most painful hangover of her life. What happened to her? Who were those people at the ice cream shop? She tried to figure out what she could right away.
Movement was restricted. Her arms were behind her back, and in some way, she was tied by her wrists. She also awoke with her side against a cool surface. Not stone; it felt like something artificial against her arm. She wanted to know more, but she found herself pretty limited, which was concerning: she could not see.
When she felt her eyes open, the darkness was a shot of panic through her. Was she somehow blinded? Were her eyes still in her head? She opened and closed her eyes rapidly, and it hit her—her lashes were brushing against something. She was blindfolded. That was bad, but infinitely better than the other possibilities.
She needed to figure out where she was, and why she was taken. Except it was not just her, she realized with a pit in her stomach. ”Booker? Booker, are you here?” she called out anxiously, unable to see her surroundings as she awkwardly sat up.

Over the years, Nessa had gotten better at navigating the public eye. She was more of a natural introvert, but she could manage for a time around people and push the extrovert button a little harder when a fan engaged her. On a practical level, it was good to not have a reputation as a stuck-up b*tch. On a personal level, she generally liked her fans, as awkward as they could. She did her best to give them a good impression of her.
The woman with the phone seemed uncomfortable with Nessa’s attention. She supposed some of her fans were still that awkward, but she tried not to dwell on the apparent picture taking and meager wave. ”You know, it occurs to me that she could have not been taking a picture. I just kinda believed your assumption.” It seemed plausible. ”Which would, of course, make me that awkward girl who waves at people who aren’t looking at them.” Of all the bad tropes to be.
The wave got the woman moving away, taking a call. Perhaps she was just stopping to pull up a number or check a map. Nessa banished most of her curiosity, (bordering on suspicion,) and returned her focus to closer things. Her ice cream. Two people taking seats a couple of tables behind Booker. The fact that they had only ordered waters? What an odd choice at an ice cream shop, but perhaps they were just thirsty and decided it a good place to rest.
Once again, no reason to overthink. ”People are weird,” she decided aloud before licking at more of what was left of her ice cream.

Nessa was not dumb. She could put two and two together on her own most of the time. Her schooling was cut unfortunately short, but she had finished her GRE and no one was going to seriously call her an idiot. Really, the problem was how impulsive and hard-headed she could be. She would go on a path and suddenly, that was the only thing in her vision.
Nessa would still tell anyone that Booker was the brilliant sibling (as long as she was out of his earshot.) She was proud of him for all he accomplished and the man he was, and it paid to have a brother who was not such a hot-head and could step back and remind her that she was holding to a dead-end road.
With the genuine mushy stuff out of the way, they could safely go back to teasing one another. As he said, they had a rep to maintain. The timing was good, too, as no sooner did she nudge him, a woman nearby was snapping a picture of them.
That was a surprise, honestly. Most people who recognized her came up and said hello. She could be cantankerous on screen, but the community knew she was more approachable than that. She was not the kind of famous where you had to worry about paparazzi, so the woman’s actions just did not add up.
”Okay, that’s weird. I don’t know if she’s doing that because she’s a fan or she’s trying to document the low-tier of society I associate with.” Vanessa took a chance and waved at the woman, just to signify she was aware of her presence. Now she could see what happened next. Maybe she would get closer; from this distance, Nessa could not meet her eyes properly.

Vanessa was imperfect, just like anyone else, but she did strive to be good. She did her best to keep to pescatarianism, she advocated for womens’ rights and gay rights, while trying to not be a total bitch to men and straight folk who were not actively shouting at her. Now that she was publicly entering two new minority roles, she was inclined to seek out the challenge and shoulder burdens, because that was what she saw as the logical way to advocate for her causes.
In moments like this, it was good to have her brother around. She always saw Booker as the one who could see the big picture and take a step back, seeing the forest for the trees, while Vanessa was firmly entrenched in the thick of things, trying to chop down one tree at a time. Booker provided her with a healthy amount of perspective, and at times, she was sorely lacking in that.
>> ”’Let us all be brave enough to die the death of a martyr, but let no one lust for martyrdom…’ -- Gandhi. You’ve taken your stand, Nessa. And you’ll always stand for those who need to be stood up for...but that doesn’t mean you need to keep subjecting yourself to that much hate. They wouldn’t want that...Gina wouldn’t want that… and your brother doesn’t want that.”
He was right. Of course he was; he had an annoying habit of being right. In this instance, she would let it pass. She felt guilty for not doing more sooner and not “taking her lumps,” but the people who really cared about and supported her were not looking for her to even up some suffering score. ”I guess there are better ways to celebrate being part of a community than seeking out the people who are mad I’m in it.” Why focus on the hate when she could focus on the good?
Vanessa took a big bite of her ice cream and let it melt on her tongue before she finally continued. ”Okay. When I go back, I’ll close out that video. I’ll go onto some community message boards instead; look for the love instead of the hate.” Trans, gay, and mutant community websites were usually good at filtering out the trolls and the hate. This was likely her healthiest plan since uploading her video.
The younger sister nudged Booker’s shoulder with her own. ”Thanks. With little trips like this, people are going to start thinking you care about me.”

Booker was good at teasing, but Nessa did not engage with him bringing up Gina’s name. If it came from someone else, she might defend herself or explain away their concern. Booker knew her well enough and was familiar with her dating history. He understood that cheating was a cardinal sin in Nessa’s eyes, particularly with the experiences she endured with Spencer and Becca. He poked fun, but there was no need to explain how her appreciation for pretty women did not threaten or compromise her love for her girlfriend.
They siblings settled into their seats and Vanessa conceded to her brother; he was a pain in the ass, but he was very good at looking out for her. Leaving the apartment and distancing herself from technology was good for her mental health. It was worth letting him gloat to acknowledge that she was glad to take a mental break from her frustrations.
Licking her ice cream, she was finally at a point where she was willing to answer when Booker inquired about her. Before this new calming moment, she was not in the headspace to really assess how she felt. ”I’m… better than I think I’ve been acting, I guess.” That had not struck her until she could reflect like this. ”There’s plenty of love and support out there. That’s not even talking about the team and Gina and you. Plenty of people have been really good about this and good to me.”
Vanessa sighed, biting a bit of her ice cream and swallowing before she continued. ”I think I’ve been seeking out the hate, which is dumb. Clearly.” Being in a room screaming at a screen was no one’s favorite pastime. ”I think I just wanted confirmation. I knew people like that were out there. The transphobes and the mutant haters… do they have a phobe name? Genophobe? I dunno, anyway, I’m getting sidetracked. I just… I’ve avoided all this hate for so long, and I feel like I should see it. Some people don’t get the choice. Non-passing trans girls. Mutant girls like Gina.” She could not imagine the kind of misplaced hate a grey girl with wings and horns could have to deal with, and the thought of it made her sick.
”I guess I couldn’t help but feel like, if I want to own who I am, I have to see that hate and understand what some of my brothers and sisters in this go through.”

Vanessa was, at her core, an introvert. It made her choice of profession a surprise to most people, but to her, it made sense. She worked with a group of people she was familiar with and comfortable with, making hanging out with them easier than most people. She had large exposure to other people, but she only interacted with the public “directly” when The POW Block Party attended conventions.
In contrast to the telepath, Gina was a perfect example of an extrovert, at least in Nessa’s eyes. She was open and friendly, and fit in easily with most conversations. With a mutation like hers, no one would have blamed her for being picky with the people she talked to or let in; people could be unfair to visible mutants. Even with all that, Gina was the kind of person people just naturally liked; a social butterfly who traded her butterfly wings for gargoyle wings.
The guys on the couch did not miss a beat with someone new around to interact with. They were integrating her into the video, and Nessa loved them for that. In many ways, it was like she had a surplus of big brothers, and knowing they liked her girlfriend was comforting. Gina played her role, claiming her not-so-secret weapon status, though Nessa could see she was just having fun with the banter. That made her happy.
“Fair point,” David agreed, nodding sagely. He was usually the one to come up with obscure philosophical questions about non-philosophical topics, so this argument seemed to please him. “Okay, I’m co-opting your girlfriend to train her in the ways of gaming.”
“How well can someone learn to play from the worst gamer we know?” Vince asked, prompting indignant and intelligible bird noises of disgust from David.
“Hey guys,” Dori sighed, “if you’re done, we’ve been on the minigame screen for half a minute.”
Nessa finally broke contact from her girlfriend’s gorgeous eyes to notice he hair-changing mutant was right. ”Oh, how about that. Oh damn, crack hands,” she groaned. It was a style of minigame popular with the series: rather than platforming or maze solving or anything like that, this was purely a game where you pressed A as many times as humanly possible in the time limit. Not Nessa’s most dominant kind of game, but no one on the couch today was an expert. ”Kiss for luck?” Nessa asked, looking back up to Gina to hopefully receive her kiss.
“Cheater.”
”Bite me, Vince.”
The members of the couch watched as the screen phased in to show a balloon attached to a pump. Each of the four characters got their own balloon and would have to pump it up faster than the others. The game chimed. “Ready? Go!”
And then the button mashing was on. The four players furiously hit the button, their faces clearly straining. As the balloons neared full status, all four had gone from humming to yelling as though they were in an anime trying to ascend to a new power level.
Pop!
The game ended and they all slumped back, relaxing, Nessa resting her head against Gina’s chest as Dori loudly proclaimed his success. The game gave him a coin lead, though Nessa still had one more star, so the game would come down to the bonus awards.
Nessa leaned up toward Gina’s ear, specifically the one not seen by the camera, so she could whisper, ”So sorry about the hold up, we’re almost done. Hope we’re not being boring at least.” And then, because she couldn’t help herself and the camera couldn’t see, Nessa nibbled lightly on Gina’s earlobe before pulling away. She really did miss her beautiful girlfriend.
“Oy, no canoodling on the couch.”
”Shove it, I do what I want.” Nessa boasted as the characters took the end of game stage for awards.

New York was a veritable cornucopia of unique food places. The ethnic diversity of foods was impressive, (as Becca never seemed to shut up about back in the day,) but the cultural fare was only one aspect of the diversity. That did not account for the bizarre. With several nexuses for hipsters and avant-garde types in the city, even everyday foods got unique and unexpected twists.
In Nessa’s estimation, no ice cream shoppe had mode hipster indie cred than Da Vinci’s Cona Lisa. It was widely regarded in Midtown as the go-to place for the weirdest flavor combinations in frozen dessert history. It was always fun to bring friends there so everyone could compare their selections, and with close enough friends, sharing a taste was pretty common.
Nessa and Booker were not the sharing types, but they did enjoy coming to Cona Lisa, since it was close enough to walk to in good weather. ”First of all, I was feeling bold, and secondly, there was that blonde working, and I wanted to impress her.” Being taken did not mean she did not want to be impressive in front of cute girls, there were just lower stakes since nothing would come of it. The blonde shoppe worker was one of those longtime innocent crushes. One did not flirt with the shoppe girls; you just thought, “gosh, she’s pretty.”
Without the blonde working today, Nessa went with a slightly more restrained option, choosing the Fruit Salad ice cream. The multicolored ice cream had different flavors in each bite, and it confused her brain. As a sorbet, it would have been normal, but the fruity flavors of melon, banana, grape, and strawberry all contrasted with the creaminess of ice cream. Still, it was tasty.
Licking the frozen treat, Nessa looked around the outdoor seating area. It was a warm day, but not sweltering, like the summer could sometimes get. ”Okay, you win; I think I needed to get out of the apartment for a bit. This is nice.”

Booker loved to joke about making Nessa’s life harder, but they both knew he was her biggest source of support when the chips were down. No one had been around for her so long and so loyally. Gina was an important part of her life she cherished, but Booker was her family and had experience having her back for over two decades.
Booker knew the signs of Vanessa letting public opinions drag her down, and he never failed to take it upon himself to be a positive presence and lift her out of the muck. For him, it really was as easy as carrying her away from a toxic environment and bringing her somewhere she could enjoy something simple and maybe vent her frustrations until they were gone.
Her kidnapper poked fun at her strong financials, but Nessa laughed it off. Booker was never one to seriously resent the money she managed to make, which was great, since Internet Media was still a developing space and there was always the possibility she crashed and burned taking such a risk; really, there was still a chance of that depending on how the landscape changed in the upcoming years.
For now, she was financially stable and her brother liked to tease her about it, and that was fine. ”Please, you are an independent man, and I wouldn’t want to harm your macho cred by suddenly paying for things.”
She was ready to continue, but before she could open her mouth, he was hugging her. There was a moment of surprise, but she ended up smiling sheepishly and returning the affection. ”Thanks, bro.”

Even when growing up, Nessa was a thin kid who could never match her brother when natural sibling squabbles occurred. Sure, she was scrappy, but he was older and bigger and stronger, and the bastard knew how to throw that weight around. She put up a fight as best she could, but he was committed to taking her out of the apartment, so that was evidently what was going to happen.
Booker was merciful enough to grab Nessa jeans on the way out and she snagged them from the air before they were out of reach. They walked down the hall—well, he did, at least. Booker engaged with their neighbors while Nessa continued to pout from his shoulder. She was not going to interact with the neighbors anyway, since that was not the person she was, but being lugged around was a decent excuse for ignoring them, at least.
They finally made it to the elevator and Nessa was on her feet, hastily pulling on her jeans, shimmying them past her hips and over her pajama shorts. That was one problem handled, at least, leaving the matter of how to best kill her brother.
Booker tried to give her the one-word vague answer, and she responded by glaring daggers at him. He was more infuriating because any incidental eye contact would not help with him, since he was a jerk who decided to be born with a perfect counter to her powers. She awaited his real answer impatiently, and he did not disappoint.
It took a few seconds to register his answer, along with his reminder that she was entirely unplugged. Slowly, it hit Nessa what her brother was doing. She rolled her eyes, but her pout dissolved into a slight smile. ”We also don’t have my wallet, so this better at least be your treat. Plus, I don’t have my ID, so there goes any hope of buying myself some rum raisin.” Not that she would, obviously. Blech.
She was not ready to talk about why he pulled her from her computer, but after some ice cream, that would probably change.

Vanessa should have heeded the advice of literally everyone and shut off the comments section to her video, but she was sure the people who wanted to leave comments would just flee to her other videos. Maybe it was better to concentrate the garbage in one pile.
It was sound logic, except one did not spend her night staring at garbage, waiting for more people to add to the pile. The analogy even sounded toxic, and Vanessa was raging at the toxicity. She was stewing in most of her negative emotions, oblivious to how damaging the choice could be. Coming out again as trans was rehashing old feelings and the backlash she received for being a mutant hit the anxious worry she lived with for so many years while she kept her secret. She needed a break from the hate, but she was not acknowledging that.
Thankfully, Nessa was not alone. Sure, she had support, but specifically, she was not alone in the apartment. Booker burst into her room and before she could ask questions, he had lifted her and hoisted her over his shoulder. ”Ack! What? No! Where are you even taking me? These are pajama shorts!” Nessa kicked and protested, but her brother was always the taller, stronger one.
She put up a fight, hoping to petition him to put her down so she could change out of her old t-shirt and cotton shorts short enough to show the fox on her thigh. At least he was kind enough to pick up her shoes on the way out. By the time they were out of the door, she had stopped trying to thrash about. Her arms were folded and she wore a pout of resignation. ”I’m asking in protest and do not support this unjust abduction, but where are you taking me?”
