The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Maim. Ma'am? No, there probably was a y in that one. Kalos struggled with her spelling, but she got it down enough that she, at least, would understand.
He had crouched and, other than taking a small step back, Kalos remained where she was so that she could record his thoughts on love. At least the important ones. In this case, it was okay to show affection through maiming someone. Maybe. So long as she stood by her actions it was an okay thing to do? Not that she wanted to. Because love was still dumb.
"I want kettle corn: the pop corn with the sweet? Unless you're making REAL food, in that case I want a double chocolate cake with pecans." She was ready for him to say no to the cake, which was why she'd brought it up. That made kettle corn sound far less intimidating a task! Kalos was really starting to understand negotiations better. She climbed up on a bar stool that backed up to the kitchen bench so she could watch Xavier work and still take notes.
"I'm sorry. I still don't get it." She reviewed her notes. "Love made Juni sad. And she loves someone who's not even around to receive her love? She could just stop. She said so." If it hurt, why didn't she just stop? Sure, Xavier said it wasn't a switch but she could stop. And it HURT. So obviously she should.
"And then there's you. Xavier says love is the best even if it got you stabbed. I'm still waiting to hear about the good parts." Because work? Work was just one more thing to list in her "why it's bad" section of the paper. That part wasn't labeled because so far, it was all of it.
She'd been so focused on her notes and her mission that she hadn't stopped to worry about how very tall and... big he was. Xavier. She swallowed hard. He looked really innocuous and those were often the worst kinds of mutants. They were always hiding something. Like how he tapped his temple before he said her name. Was he... was he reading her mind!? Or making fun of her!? He only made non-sense sounds after she'd asked him about love.
Or... or had that been Chinese? She wasn't good at recognizing most non-Greek rooted languages just yet.
"Do you have somebody...?" He gave a kind of non-answer, but he did get a far away look on his face like his mind was elsewhere. Of course, if he was actually psychic his mind really could be somewhere else.
Eventually he got his thoughts in order enough to answer.
Kalos opened her mouth. Kalos closed her mouth.
"Who hurt you?" It was possible she heard wrong. He seemed to be sweating... or shining. If he started sparkling Kalos was going to run just like Juni had. "You love someone who tried to kill you?"
She held Xavier's gaze for a long while before answering the question about food with an uncertain little nod.
Was he... nervous?
"The girl before? You said she was Juni," she wrote that down, "she said you don't have to love people if you don't want to. AND you can quit loving people if you want." He sounded like, maybe he needed to hear that part?
The woman harbored a soft smile that changed the sadness in her eyes to... to what? Kalos added to her notes about sad love. That was a thing, and yet another reason to A-V-O-I-D love. How did she still love a dead guy? It just... didn't quite add up. ESPECIALLY once she said that you could stop loving people.
”Whu-? Bu-!” She was torn between asking more and taking more notes. If Kalos could write faster, this really wouldn’t be an issue but…. But… UGH. Kalos chose to write notes when the woman turned, slurred out a kind-of apology, and ran like Kerberus himself was coming to reclaim her escaped soul. She could have caught her if she wanted, but the next guy was already helpfully showing up. And… offering to cook something?
”I like food.” She helpfully supplied as she grabbed her notepad off the wall. She had loots of questions now. ”Hey, how do you know if you’re in love? And, why do people say it’s “falling”? Like, you can’t just accidentally happen to love a dude, right?”
C - H - A - D. Kalos kept writing as best she could because this girl was also a goldmine of information. Oh. If the number was based on looks and the number was based on age.... then... he liked old people? He was an... old-a-phile? It sounded like Chads liked old people, then. She drew a line and wrote OLD LOVE, crossed out the start of writing "dead" and filled in a check next to "Love Hurts". Or should that have been a tally mark?
"WHAT!?" Kalos jumped, not having meant to blurt her words half as loudly as she did. She spoke the next words perhaps a bit too quiet just to make up for it. "You started loving someone when you were 14?" Geez. Did that... did that mean Kalos was actually quite far behind? She quickly wrote 14 and circled it. She REFUSED to put a heart around it.
"Do you-? You sound like you stopped loving? After you... lost? How'd you do that?" Yeah. That actually sounded quite important, actually. If she could shut down any love someone tried to send her way, then she didn't have to love anyone!
"Like, you have to want to be in love to be in love, right?" RIGHT!? Because they told her that she didn't have to do things that she didn't want to do any more.
Kalos wrote her letters carefully until she realized that she was being pranked or made fun of somehow. "I'm pretty sure it starts with a P." She deadpanned. "And besides there's one just over there. He had a-" What was it called? Kalos tried to pantomime a sub sandwich and quickly gave up. "He had a crazy idea about how women can be ten or something and I told him I'm fourteen, but-"
Where had she been going with all this? Kalos wrinkled her nose in sheer frustration.
Ah right. LOVE.
> "I... have, actually. Yes."
"I have a school thing to learn about Valentines and love and stuff." Was she... Was she trying to look at Kalos' notes? Rude! Kalos scooted the paper down the hall wall so that she could better hide them with her body. There wasn't a lot there just yet, even if there was her handwriting was atrocious. "Do you have to be a certain age before it hits you? It hurts, right? I've heard love hurts."
"I just turned fourteen." Spoken with the hesitancy of one who didn't exactly know her own birthday. But that was her answer... an answer that only served to prompt more questions. If the number was an age indication did that mean that this man was running around kissing ten year olds? Was he... allowed in here? With kids? She looked around, but they didn't usually get the real little ones. She also took a small step back. Juuuust in case.
He did, however, give a fantastic answer to the kissing conundrum.
"Thanks... I think." She definitely had more questions, but Kalos had to take a moment to write down some notes, otherwise she was going to lose some of them.
Rather than do that here, near a potential child predator, Kalos wandered toward a wall in the hallway.
While reading was still difficult, writing was near impossible. Especially when she heard footsteps coming toward her. Her first instinct was to bolt, but... she was still on a mission.
"Excuse me. Have you ever been in love? And how do you spell pedophile? "
The other thing? Whatever it was, she was in. She was invited, she was here, she was in. Kalos did, however, worry that she was a real mess. She took a moment to mop her weepy eyes before she popped up off her bench and ran full throttle toward Maya. She wasn't aiming to tackle her, but she wasn't exactly subtle since there was no baby in arms to worry about. She flung her arms wide and tried to get both Becca and Maya in one tackle-hug and a laugh.
"Next is ice cream, right?" Surely they hadn't forgotten that she was promised ice cream?
Ah. Yes. She got a human looking man so he must be a big liar. Kalos took a moment to absorb what he'd said because it made very little sense. Ten... what? Fingers? Almost everybody had that? His standards were seriously lacking. In fact, the more she tried to figure it out, the crazier her ideas were getting so once she'd worked herself into proper confusion she had to ask.
"I meant, how in love do you have to be? Like, ready to marry? Or when you're ready to have a baby maybe? Also, what's a ten? Can a boy be ten or only 'she's? Do I get a number?" She had about 50 more questions lined up in the chamber if he didn't stop her.
Kalos was on a mission. Her mission, because she did choose to accept it, was to interview people about love because there was a Love Holiday about to happen and she'd told her language tutor that love was dumb. The polyglot had looked 1 part amused, 1 part horrified, and also a little bit smug? Kalos had questions and after she'd said what she did, the teacher would not answer. She was given a notebook and a pencil and sent out the door to get her answers elsewhere.
She didn't want to approach just anyone. Yes, she'd been assured that the Mansion was safe, but she'd always distrusted the human-looking mutants. They probably had hidden meanness, just like they hid their best selves. Maybe she'd find someone small... but, would someone small know about love? Becca and Mirror obviously knew about love, she would probably have to ask them since they had a baby, even though they sometimes turned red when she asked.
Okay then. Kalos decided she would give literally anyone a chance. Scary or not. She marched to the most busy part of the Mansion (the kitchen), closed her eyes (no peeking), gave herself a spin (removing her bias), and put her hand out to see if she could walk into someone.
And once she did...
"Hi. I'm learning about love for the Valentine Day. When do you think people should kiss?" She had her pencil all ready to go...
They wanted to cook and she was dubbed head Chef Kalos! Rowan got a little weird, possibly because her hands were weird. Kalos rubbed the hand she had offered to Rowan on her pants leg to make sure the white caps of her fingers were still on tight. At least Aoi wasn't afraid. Maybe because she was used to seeing severed heads and stuff.
"The first thing I got learned was me zon plass. It means you get all your stuff out and make sure you have enough sugar. There's a book of cake recipes... uhm..." Where did it go? She opened a few cabinets, having to stretch to check the uppers until she found it. The illustrated Cake Book. She flipped greedily through the full color photos, pausing only briefly at her favorite chocolate cake picture, until she found the recipe in question.
"Okay. We need a cupcake pan and liners. Rowan can you find that? The pan is under the burner things and the liners are... somewhere..." She pointed to the pan's hiding spot and rather relished being in this sort of position of power. She asked and... and people were going to do what she was asking for? "Aoi, in the refrigerator we have a need for eggs- four eggs, apple sauce, carrots? Like a lot of carrots." She took the dry ingredients on herself. She grabbed the flour from the pantry and then climbed up onto the counter near Rowan so that she could reach the spices. Kalos carefully laid the illustrated guide on the range with the recipe open.
The book wasn't hers. It technically belonged to the Mansion, but Kalos had made almost every recipe by now as it was the only book that did not require one to be able to read with any fluency. It had pictures for everything: every step was drawn out, though some things were harder to tell what they were...
"Can you read these?" Kalos pointed to the nutmeg and cloves and cinnamon and waited for Rowan to have a second to help. All the brown spices looked rather the same.
"Aoi! Can you reach the oven? We need it to say 3 - 0 - 0." She might be tall enough to reach it now, but her fingers didn't work on the buttons unless she took the caps off. People did not like when she took her fingers off.
Being sometimes an animal sounded really inconvenient. Kalos had never yet been thankful that she was really only ever one thing, but she was only a lady coral. Not sometimes coral, sometimes a lady. Maybe it had benefits, but at the moment as she watched Aoi try to reign in her breathing and embarrassment, Kalos couldn't see it.
"I hid." Kalos admitted about her survival. "I'm a good hider. There were others like me and we worked together."
There was one thing that Kalos knew she could do to help. They said food was good. Full was best. She had to agree, and since she'd been at the Mansion, she'd made it her mission to know where all the food was AND how to make more.
"I just learned how to make carrot cake." Kalos offered as she disentangled herself from Aoi. Aoi's hair was very, very pretty, Kalos had to admit. She sort of wondered if her hair would ever lay down like that. "And it cooks faster when it's cupcakes. Can you eat carrot cakes in mini size? If you don't like eggs, that is." Eggs were fine and all, but that thing called sugar was her new favorite.
She stood, glad for the little kitchen nook they'd ended up in. It was out of the way enough that no one had walked over them and once they'd sat on the ground, they were all short enough that they'd been sheltered by the countertop behind them. Now standing, she could see the students eating and joking so casually... like they'd never even been close to being eaten by a bear or a wolf.
"It's calming to bake. I can teach you...?" She offered her hands, one to each kid, in order to help them up too.
Aoi seemed to be wrestling inside of herself and that ratched Kalos' anxiety up the longer the seconds ticked by. It was good, then, that Rowan was like one of those TV people who made you twist up into funny shapes. For every worry that twisted Kalos' guts, Rowan seemed to have a soothing rebuttal. By the end, she wanted to roll around in his voice and take a nap.
> "Do you like it better here?"
The question caught Kalos SO off guard that she made a loud bark of laughter before she slapped her hand over her mouth.
"Aoi, every day I was alive in Atlantis was a day they tried to kill me. When I was a baby, they could already see I wasn't right for them so they threw me out. My parents were punished for having a thing like me." She clicked her toes on the floor. "They were wrong, obviously. So I'm here now and I'm not ever leaving."
Eggs were brought to Kalos' attention and once mentioned, she couldn't un-notice the smell. Once she had complained about "eating babies" and once the hypocrisy of eating fish eggs was pointed out to her, she decided to give land eggs a go.
"Does eating make the animals better?" She looked to Rowan since he had one too?
Kalos had it in her head that she'd be two states gone by now, but the way that the girl reacted unexpectedly broke her heart into tiny shards. She flashed wildly uncomfortable eyes toward Rowan, not because he was a scary wolf who was also a little too quick to deny eating people, but because Aoi was crying. Right here in public.
She couldn't let a girl cry in public.
Kalos slipped into the space between Rowan and Aoi and bumped her shoulders encouragingly against each of them in turn. She had a good feeling about these new friends. Like she'd lucked into the 'Fraidy Cat's Club and it was somehow still the cool place to be.
"Hey. I-" She hesitated taking a deep breath and a gut-check of herself before she lied, but... this wasn't a lie. Aoi was seriously freaked out, as was Rowan. "I believe you. You didn't maul anything more than some glass. Nobody got hurt but you. Maybe you don't give enough credit to yourself."
And Rowan... Kalos moved her eyebrows to indicate that he should get in on this comforting words action, too. "I'm sorry I asked. Big animals... actually, a heck of things still scares me."
Aoi continued to confuse Kalos. She talked about her bear like it was something different from herself. But Kalos had seen it. She was the bear. And knowing that she might just poof turn into a bear made Kalos want to take a little step away. But she didn't. Rowan was here and he'd been equally freaked out and he wasn't stepping away. So neither would she.
And speaking of poof you're an animal, Rowan turned into a WOLF. Kalos did take a small step away then. Big animals freaked her out and here she was sharing her jerky stash with two of them.
"The salmon is the best." She wholeheartedly agreed and would not even think to dissuade Aoi from ordering more. Kalos was told that it was expensive and that she must ration or else they'd blow the whole school's food budget. Ideally Kalos would be eating meals with the rest of the school aged kids now, but... well, she was still work up to it.
> "Can you live underwater then?"
"I used to live under water in the ocean. You know. Atlantis. I didn't go into the water much. At that deepness, the water was crushing." That had been her main emergency escape and the number one reason why she'd been able to stay out of the guards' reach for so long. Her hard parts had been quite a bit more useful in protecting her under the sea. On land... it just seemed to make her a crunchy snack.
"Four years for me too, but... I didn't get out much the first two." She fidgeted. "I didn't speak English at first. Or read or nothing. But. Yeah. Teachers are nice and good at makeup work stuff."
Kalos could feel THE questions building up inescapably and she had to blurt it all at once and get it over with.
"You guys haven't... I mean, you're... you don't... eat? People? As-as your animal selfs?" If there was a yes in there, she was fully ready to bounce and find a nice place to hide away for a day or two.
It was okay to cry. She'd been told it was okay. Still, Kalos was caught unaware by a whole surge of warm fuzzies. Someday, maybe Kalos would find her Becca or her Maya. Wouldn't it be fun to help Iris find her true love? They were all going to do that someday. And that was so, so beautiful.
