The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Ok. So this was happening now for sure. The hustle of the class change seemed to take a collective breath after Kalos had shouted. Mostly, the reactions were similar. Blink. See that there was no threat. Move on. The kids continued on like a never ending river where Ms Sundance and Kalos were just a rock in their way.
> "Love? Can you be more specific, please?”
Surely Ms Sundance knew what love was. "I mean, you know what love is? Like romance, I guess." Kalos looked around. Really, it wasn't the best place to talk about love.
"I've heard it's like a feeling in your belly or liver or something. I mean, you look like you've been in love at least once because you're like really old, right? So you have to have had a romance at least once and know what it's like. So. What's that like?"
As much as she loved her new rock, Kalos decided it wasn't worth risking its loss. The rock went back into her hoodie pocket and she got her pencil ready for her notes.

Her number one concern was to find someone else, literally anyone else, to talk to. The "why" wasn't as important as the fact that Kalos was sure she had not yet fulfilled her love-obligation.
"Hey, kid!" She reached out to touch an elbow of a passing student, only... it wasn't a student. The woman was a teacher, short as a student so the confusion was understandable. Kalos' heart sank as she recognized the woman she'd been encouraged to speak with, but hadn't yet had the courage to do so.
"M-Ms. Sundance. I'm really- I didn't mean..." Oh boy. Kalos was sure her face was flushed purple as she took a small step backwards. It wasn't like Ms. Sundance was mean. She was supposed to be very nice, in fact. Just... the animals... There were always animals around.
Kalos had to ask something and just get it out of the way so she could check her "I was brave today" box and then maybe run away.
"WHAT DOES LOVE FEEL LIKE!" She hadn't meant to shout it, Kalos was in such a rush to get the words out, it just happened at full volume somehow.
"People came after you?" Kalos picked at her fingertips. She knew what that was like, to be hunted. The problem was that their experiences with dogs fell on the exact opposite end of the spectrums. She'd been hunted with dogs being the method of her tracking and capture. Rowan seemed to feel that Zorro had been on his side in that process.
"Bad guys would have to fight through a whole lot of people to get to you when you're here at the school." And, though she didn't really know how to fight, Kalos hoped she would be counted in that number. Nobody was going to hunt kids here. Nobody.
"I wouldn't let people hunt you. But, I guess I'm nowhere near as scary as Zorro. Sounds like Zorro had earned that hamburger," she begrudgingly admitted. Kalos was just a girl. Zorro had some actual intimidation factor. She glanced back again into the dimly lit room. "I'd let you hide in a spot like this, probably."
As Zorro sped back toward Rowan with ball in mouth, Kalos had to squash the instinct that spurred her to run or duck behind the wall. The dog wasn't coming for her and he was a friend to Rowan. Still her fingers crunched as she gripped them tightly together. She was going to be brave and not move. Or maybe moving would make her a target? Either way, she decided it was okay with a wall between them.
Only there was a sudden, more important problem: a scraping near the door, the sound of heavily burdened footsteps.
No. It couldn't be...
The door handle made a sound and before Kalos could think too much, she dove head first out the window. It was a first-story drop so less than her own height, but she wasn't dressed for the cold, wearing shoes, or prepared to land.
Above, the light turned on in the little storage room and a box-laden adult moved through the space.
Had he exposed her hiding spot? Kalos looked back into the dimly lit room before watching Rowan crunch across the hard white patches of ground. It was Rowan. She was pretty sure he was a friend. So she considered her spot intact, especially since he was still out there in the cold. "It's okay." She muttered to herself mostly. Did he think she cherished her hiding spots more than her friends?
And even more curious, Rowan took the time to walk over to the dog and then walk back. Kalos watched his every step while she puzzled over the why. It didn't exactly look fun to be out there right now with all the cold and wet.
"Playing." She deadpanned. Kalos had seen it crouching down. She'd seen how it ran and hunted and then she'd seen the ball squeezed between its teeth. Sure, the dog let the ball go, but only so it could go after it again.
"Why would you owe a-" Kalos stopped herself from derisively spitting the word dog out of her mouth as she remembered that Rowan said he had a dog inside himself in the same way that Aoi had a bear. That was hard to remember sometimes since she'd never seen it. Still, she tried again with a less twisted tone. It wasn't Rowan's fault he was stuck with a dog inside of him. "Why do you owe something to Zorro?"
It was coming for him. He was took the time to wave and while he was looking around a little alarmed, Rowan was not nearly alarmed enough. And then he... smiled?
Kalos sank down so only her nose, eyes, and hair cleared the window sill as she processed his words. Just because he knew who the dog attacked for, didn't mean he should trust it. She did notice, however, that the dog mostly kept its distance. And as an added bonus, the dog seemed to be training to attack the ball rather than its natural prey of children. Balls could be thrown away. And Rowan did that so that the dog would also go away.
Rowan came closer while the dog was away and Kalos realized her mistake. She hadn't saved anybody. Even worse, now she was in a conversation when she'd meant to be hiding.
"Uhm. You could say that it's hide and seek." She realized that she was still mostly hiding behind the window frame so she stood so he could better see and hear her. The window was raised from the ground enough that she was looking down on the outside. So, even if the dog came back, it couldn't jump this high, right?
"I'm hiding," she admitted, "but I don't think anybody's seeking." She stuck her arms out of the window to feel the chill in the air as much as her oversized hoodie allowed and ended up folding her arms outside while sort of draping herself across the Mansion opening. It felt rather daring, really. Even with the roof to keep her from falling up.
"So, uh, why are you training Ms. Sundance's dog to attack balls?"
Kalos had forgotten an assignment. Okay, okay, she could admit to herself that she just hadn't done an assignment. It was hard and she didn't see the point of it. So she went to go hide instead of looking at the disappointed face of her tutor. She still wasn't in classes with everyone else, and the classes she did manage to be in were the baby classes which was fairly humiliating.
She thought that after so many years of learning, Kalos would know it all by now.
She also had, like, 4 more years. And then… what?
Something smacked against the wall next to the windows in her hiding spot and that was a far easier thing to investigate than some nebulous future. Kalos wiggled out from her super secret hiding spot, and peered out the window.
It was Rowan. He was walking toward a neon round ball and… and there was a dog after him at top speed!
Kalos popped open the window and it groaned from disuse, paint flaking around the edges.
”Watch out! There’s a DOG BEHIND YOU!” She pointed, her hand extending beyond the Mansion wall for the first time since she’d been adopted.
Okay. Now they were just teasing her. Ice cream. No wait. Adoption. Now ice cream. No wait. A picture!
She really had to wipe her face up. Kalos tried, and likely failed, to get herself in photo-ready order before holding up the signed certificates and scooting in close to her family and smiling. "Cheese!" She didn't like her teeth, well actually other people didn't like her teeth since they weren't all smooth and human-looking. Dang. Had her teeth been showing?
"Ice cream?" Also, did she get to keep the papers? Kalos tried to unwrinkle them a bit in case the answer was no.

Kalos' head slowly turned a little bit the other way. He thought about her? Rowan found the gift and, she had no idea what she'd expected, but she hadn't expected a rock. She looked between Rowan's face and the rock. And then one more back and forth while he spoke. That was unexpected. She had to stand to collect the rock when offered and she turned it around in her hands feeling her fingers scrape.
"No. It's cool. I don't have any rocks and if you had bought something, I'd feel bad. But this is..." What was this, exactly? "It's a treasure. I love it. Can I really keep it?" It was something really cool from outside. She hadn't really wanted to go on that trip... until now. Kalos turned the rock over in her hands.
Did she have more questions?
"Only a million questions." She joked with a laugh, but she wasn't joking. The rock fit nicely in her pocket. Only, she wished she could still see it so Kalos fished it back out and put it on top of her notepad instead when she collected her stuff from the floor.
"That's okay, though. I think you were on your way somewhere. I can go bother someone else. There was a- I have a-" She was pretty sure she was making excuses and not at all sure why.
"I'll see you later!" She wasn't running away, she was just looking for someone else to ask about love.

He was sometimes pink, but it wasn't until he sat atop the washer and she said the word "butt" that Rowan truly rivaled her coloring. Her head tilted. She couldn't figure that one out.
Can't love a butt 'till you're grown up. That went in her notes, but it was a longer sentence than she wanted to be writing while Rowan was talking. She had to sit and use the floor to press against to quickly get her thoughts in because she didn't want to miss what he really had to say.
She did frown and look up (and up some more) when he said love was physical. Love was physical, but that's what Kalos already knew of love: holding hands, kissing, making stupid eyes at each other, making babies. The part he didn't really explain, the part she was the most hung up on, was the not-physical. The cooking part. Or, gifts?
Kalos sat up at the idea of a gift. On one hand, she liked gifts. She liked owning things. Sometimes it still felt like she was getting away with something when she owned something.
On the other hand... she'd just used his hand to pull him here. And he was giving her a gift... after she cooked with him. Unbidden, a single thought floated up to the top of her mind.

She wanted to take notes, but what Rowan gave her was just the textbook definition. Surely he knew something more than that.
”No, I mean...” She made a frustrated sound as she had a hard time articulating. Kalos put her hand on his arm and looked around, but… maybe it was the setting. Not everyone was as free-talking as Xavier. There were too many people here for her to want to say much, so maybe there were too many for Rowan to talk freely, too.
”C'mon.” She tugged at Rowan's sleeve and ducked out of the flow of foot traffic. It wasn't too far to the laundry room and if he closed the door after he followed her in, then they'd be alone.
”I know what love is on paper." She began. ”I don't know what it means in person. Like, to people. For people? Like what it means to you.” She ended up making the same exasperated sound. Kalos was sure she was messing this up. Maybe she could try a different way to explain...
”Like butts! Some people like butts, but… why? Are you a butt guy?”
It was one-sided because Elke wasn't ready just yet. Yes. She could see that being a problem.
"I will protect your love." Kalos had been charged with a very important task. He asked her "why" but didn't really stick around for the answer. Kalos trailed after him anyway.
"No crush. I have a school assignment." It would take a while for the cake to cook and Xavier seemed pretty busy with the glass on the floor. Kalos didn't want to go stepping on any glass.
"I'll come check on you in a bit, okay? I should go ask some more people things. NOT Elke! Just... I gotta figure this stuff out." She would be lying if she didn't think it was a personal challenge at this point. She'd likely already done the bare minimum to make it up to her teacher. And she could tell now that she'd written words voluntarily and gone to intermingle with residents, both things she'd been pressured to do before without much success. Maybe it was all trick to get her to integrate into the student body, but... now she actually wanted to know.
"Hey!" she saw someone she actually recognized and jogged to catch up, "Do you know anything about love?"
Kalos' head turned to the side as she stared for a long span of breaths at Xavier's extended pinky. He had shushed her.
"Is your love something to be embarrassed of?"
Because, no matter what he said or did to try and hide it, he was embarrassed. Love was embarrassing! And clearly this one-sided love was something to be ashamed of. One more tally in the "love is bad" column, then. Maybe two. Xavier looked two tally marks worth of nervous.
Kalos folded her hard fingers around Xavier's hand, gently folding his pinky back away. "You asked me with a please. That's all I need to know you're serious. Grown ups don't say please to kids unless they're in a tough spot." Just a fact of life there, really. And this was a grave situation so she treated it with the full gravitas it deserved and then told him what she so often wanted someone to tell her. "I won't embarrass you. I just wanted to know her side, is all. I can keep your secrets, if you need. You don't have to be scared."
Every time she thought she had it figured out, he went and said things like 'I think I'm perfectly whole' and 'she doesn't need me'. She was ready to throw up her hands in defeat. At this point, she was ready to say that love only existed to have people be able to do whatever they wanted. Then they could just blame love after the fact.
She didn't give up, though. Kalos was presented with a whisk and that somehow gave her the energy to go on.
"Thank you." She was surprised, somehow, that he thought to give her one. Kalos tested the beater with a careful touch of tongue. It was good despite not having too many ingredients inside. "It's good. Up thumbs." She gave him an up thumb just in case he didn't know what that was, 'cause she'd only learned it recently. She couldn't be the only one.
She wrote down her theory that love was just an excuse, but looked up when he didn't answer her question about marriage right away. He'd answered all the other questions with quickness and free words. Now... maybe he spaced out?
He blurted words- she thought those might be words- and Kalos rocked back fully into her seat.
"You have a SECRET one side love?" Was she misunderstanding? How did... how could that POSSIBLY happen?
> "two layers with frosting inbetween?"
"If you have enough frosting, you can cut the rounds on the skinny side and make it four layer." No. Wait. He was distracting her.
"Does Elke live here?" She jotted down the name before setting down her pencil and climbing down from her bar stool. "I'll just go ask her real quick."
The most adorable thing? Kalos beamed and tried to re-evaluate her harsh earlier judgements. Clearly, he only spoke truth. "I'm beautiful, too." She chimed in, just in case he'd missed that part. But he didn't because he was going to pay homage with cake.
Okay. Maybe she understood "falling" in love a bit better now. She scribbled a note about loving cake. Cake WAS her first love.
She wrote down "friend love" because that was a thing, too. Family love? Kalos tapped her chin a few times and wrote it down with a question mark. Xavier worked toward cake while he spilled his story. Kalos didn't interrupt. Why would she? He was sharing his story and if she talked, he might stop.
His story was a bit unexpected. Xavier certainly had a strange way of being. Giving everything all the time sounded kind of... lonely. And then he found someone who didn't need him.
Kalos tried to take a step back from the personal details and look at the big picture of it all. He told her that she was easy to talk to, though she suspected that was more of Xavier giving away his words.
"Okay. So. You were... like, missing a piece? And your love has the piece you couldn't do by yourself?" So all Kalos had to do was be totally self-sufficient, then! That was a relief. She could probably keep all her pieces to herself.
They loved her like family because she was family. Kalos had heard that before and it made her feel one part guilty, one part all melty inside. She wanted to tell them that they didn't have to. She wanted to tell them that it was okay how things were, but... but they wanted this too? Kalos accepted a stack of papers with watery eyes she held wide so she wouldn't start crying again. She could have read them, if she could focus. She couldn't really focus.
They already were a family--no takebacks. But once it was on paper, officially, that meant something a little bit more. It meant no matter what. It meant... they didn't just tolerate her. They really wanted her.
She hugged the papers to her chest.
"Can we? What do I do? I want to." The officiant helpfully directed her to loosen her death grip on the papers and that all they had to do was sign. Kalos didn't have to sign as she was under age, but she wanted to. She insisted, in fact, because she wanted to see her name right next to theirs.
