The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>>“Before you were a big kid, did you want to be a superhero?”
"I'm not a superhero" Maya smirked at the kid. She had been learning lately how to deal with younger kids; she found she actually liked being a mentor of some kind. Or just talking to them. She had been a mutant kid herself, not so long ago.
"Before I was a big kid, I loved with my mom, she is the only family I have. When I wa thirteen, I... lost her, so I lived alone for a while, and then ended up here. I didn't even know the X-men existed until I came here. Twyla, the girl I told you about, kind of convinced me to stay and join the team. She was the one who wanted to be a superhero."

Chase let his head loll to the side, his gaze pointing towards Maya. She hadn’t wanted to be a superhero, growing up. She lost her mom when she was thirteen, was her own, then came to the Mansion. And the chameleon-girl talked her into the joining the team—chameleon girl wanted to be a superhero.
When the girl smiled, Chase grinned back.
“Yeah,” he confessed, sounding bashful, “I mean, my old parents, they didn’t like mutants, didn’t think they could do anything good, and so I left, and Mama found me, and Mama brought me here.”
“And here, mutants are doing all sorts of good things,” the child stated frankly, “Like being superheroes.”
“So I kinda want to be a superhero,” Chase concluded, “Or a secret-agent. It changes weekly.”
>>“Yeah. I mean, my old parents, they didn’t like mutants, didn’t think they could do anything good, and so I left, and Mama found me, and Mama brought me here. And here, mutants are doing all sorts of good things. Like being superheroes.”
Oh. So that was what happened. Maya had been wondering, just like many of the other students, why the guidance counselor would adopt a kid just like that. She had been looking after the whole school anyway, it seemed like there was no use making it legal, unless it was a special case. Chase apparently was.
>>“So I kinda want to be a superhero. Or a secret-agent. It changes weekly.”
Maya chuckled at that.
"Well, if you are interested... have you been introduced to the X-kids yet? That's what we call students on the team who are not old enough to be trainees yet. I was older than that when I got here, but I know a few people who started that early."

Chase smiled as he earned a laugh, reverting to a more normative sitting position on the couch.

“X-kids?” Chase echoed, as Maya proposed the idea. So… like… superhero training? Chase tilted his head inquiringly, “I didn’t know kids could be on the X’s.”
Chases’ eyes were the size of saucers, a small smile stetching on his face, “What do the… X-kids… get to do?”
>>“X-kids? I didn’t know kids could be on the X’s. What do the… X-kids… get to do?”
He looked like a kid in a candy store. Or, more like, a kid that just found out he could get on an actual superhero team. Maya grinned at him, the kid was just too damn adorable for his own good.
"Well, they get to train with the older X's for starters" she said "No fighting, just practicing their powers, like you do in class, and findign ways to use them. Then, if there is work in the city that needs our help, they came tag along for missions and use their powers to help. With adult supervision, obviously."

Chase’s jaw slowly dropped, and then a grin touched his expression. They got to train with the real X’s, and could tagalong for real superhero missions. And, no fighting—which was certainly a plus, for the shapeshifter.
“That sounds really cool,” Chase confessed. He fussed with his hands uncertainly, picked at his pajama pants momentarily, before finally mustering up the courage to inquire, “Do I have to do anything special to be an X-Kid, or just say I want to be one?”
Either way, he should probably ask Mama. Or at least tell her. Though who would have qualms with their child being a superhero-in-training? It was like being in Boy Scouts, but ten times better—who else could boast that they were learning how to be a hero?
“Because… I’d like that, I think,” the nine-year-old concluded, smiling.
>>“That sounds really cool. Do I have to do anything special to be an X-Kid, or just say I want to be one? Because… I’d like that, I think,”
Maya grinned. That was not completely unexpected...
"Well, in your case" she considered it for a moment "You should definitely ask Miss T first. I don't know if we have any X-kids other than you right now, so there's probably no class to join, but I can talk to her once she said yes, and I can set up training for you. Since you are a shifter they'd probably make you train with me anyway, I'm the closest thing we've got."
Other than Calley, who was a cat, and as such walking his own path.

Chase nodded as Maya spoke, murmuring her instructions in response.
“Ask Mama first,” the child reiterated. There would be no classes because there weren’t any other X-kids. After Gemma said yes, Chase could start training, and would probably work with Maya.
Chase tucked his arms under his knees, beaming broadly, “This is so exciting. I get to learn how to be a superhero.”

Maya chuckled and made a mental note to talk to the guidance counselor in the morning. She did not interact with the woman very often (which was surprising, given Mirror's track record of getting into trouble...), but she was sure she could convince her that private training was in Chase's best interest. It really was.
"So, what do you like about being a superhero?" she asked, sitting back on the counch. Might as well find out what the kid was aiming for.

Of course, asking a child such questions wouldn’t resort in some deep, introspective answer—Chase was nine years old, and being a superhero was a dream of his. And thus, in the flawless logic of a child, he answered Maya.
“Well, it’s kinda like being a spy, except when you save the world, it doesn’t have to be kept top-secret,” Chase explained, “And I dunno, I think it’d be cool to use my powers for good. ‘cuz my daddy—well, he’s not really my daddy yet, but he’s going to be—my almost-daddy fights crime, because he’s a detective, and he’s a mutant, and I’d like to do that, too.”
Chase inhaled deeply, and then fell silent. Thus the shy kid spake—he turned into quite the chatterbox when talking about something he really cared about, but the words came out all jumbled, as as if to remind him that he didn’t usually speak to girls this much. Well, Maya’s only a girl half the time, so that means that the other half of the time, I should be able to talk to her, right?
>>“Well, it’s kinda like being a spy, except when you save the world, it doesn’t have to be kept top-secret. The kid was talking about Jorge, of course, the police officer who doubled as an X-man, and the boyfriend of the guidance counselor. Maya smiled a bit; it was good to see a mutant kid find a decent family that he could love, especially after his own family proving to be thoroughly crappy enough to try and set the Mansion on fire (yes she had heard about that. Everyone had.)
"Using for powers for good" she nodded with a grin "It's an awesome thing to do. You know you don't have to fight crime to do that. There are a lot of other things we do as a team, to help out when humans can't deal with a problem. There is something to do for everyone. And we do it as a team, not just superheroes on their own. That is very important."
She looked at Chase for a moment, then grinned.
"We don't have kids your age on the team right now. You'd have to train with old ladies and guys like me."

Chase listened as Maya spoke, hanging off of each word she said—as a superhero, she’d get that kind of attention from the young shifter child. Maya explained that it was cool to use your powers for good, but that you didn’t have to fight crime to do that.
But that was what his almost-daddy did, so that was what Chase wanted to do. That was also what Chase’s favorite comic book series oriented around—Chase was pretty sure that the protagonist was a “power”, or what would typically be considered a mutant… he wasn’t to that point in the series, but he was pretty sure…
They worked as a team, Mirror went onto say, and Chase nodded his head.
“Teamwork is good,” Chase agreed. Maya smiled at him, and Chase gave a lopsided smile in reply. Maya informed him that there weren’t any kids on the team, only older guys and girls.
“That’s okay,” Chase chirped in reply, “As long as the girls don’t have cooties.”
>>“That’s okay. As long as the girls don’t have cooties.”
Maya arched an eyebrow at the kid. Cooties, really?
"Not that I now of. Superheroes don't do cooties anyway." she chuckled "But I might be wrong, I am a girl half the time after all."
She smiled at the kid; he was going to make a good addition to the team. His "almost-dad" was already a member, and his mama was the queen of the mansion... yup, Chase was right where he needed to be. Might be worth making a point of the cooties though.

Chase inclined his head. Superheroes didn’t do cooties? No one had ever told him that…
“Oh, okay,” Chase murmured, reassured by what the part-time girl had said.
>> “Do your powers allow you to turn into girls?"
Chase smiled and nodded his head, “Yes, they do… as long as someone’s kinda human, I can turn into them.”
The nine-year-old nibbled the tip of his thumb. As a point of clarification, he added on, “I mean, not that I’ve ever been a different-looking mutant before. But it can’t be too different, right?”
>> “Yes, they do… as long as someone’s kinda human, I can turn into them. I mean, not that I’ve ever been a different-looking mutant before. But it can’t be too different, right?”
Maya shrugged at that.
"Dunno, mutations can do really weird things sometimes. I mean, mine is quite enough to control, I can't imagine trying to take on someone else's. I don't remember Mom copying any physical mutations before either, most of the time she just looked... human."
But that was a long time ago. Maya could have been wrong.
