The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Mutation control classes were the worst, in Chase’s mind. He was in there for a specific reason—he had attacked Locke. Well, Renee had attacked Locke, but at the time, Chase had been Renee. So, by extension, the nine-year-old had attacked him. But control classes weren’t proving as simple for the nine-year-old would hope.
He was just too young, surrounded by kids who were at least four years his senior. His power bordered into the mental and physical—shifters could help with the physical shifts, but couldn’t help Chase remain “Chase” mentally. And while a psychic could train Chase to be more resistant mentally, it still didn’t help Chase in the physical department. The consensus was that Chase needed more time to grow, perhaps as he grew into his power he’d become more capable of controlling it. Yet the classes still continued.
This left the nine-year-old disenchanted with the whole ordeal, and rather restless. It was late at night, and he was up again—there were more mutation control classes tomorrow. He groaned, and rolled sleepily out of his bed, wriggling into an enormous t-shirt to accompany his pajama bottoms. Maybe a glass of water would help.
Not even bothering with shoes, Chase shuffled towards the door, before slipping out into the hall, closing the door behind him. Or maybe what Chase really wanted was to not sleep, and to walk instead, because rather than go to the kitchenette on the second floor, he ventured downstairs. As a creature of habit, he put on a human-face. Not that anyone would be roaming the halls at these hours, but it was best to be prepared. Chase reached the base of the stairs, and glanced around cautiously, keeping an eye out for teacher or worse his mom. Kids had a curfew around here, and Chase didn't want to get caught breaking it.
While Mirror had gotten used to shifting awake, it was still a pain in the *ss. It definitely proved to be a problem every once in a while; mission schedules rarely followed her biological schedule, not to mention time zones. Finally, the young X-man/woman had gotten to the point where scheduled midnight training sessions were sorely needed. As if s/he had no better way to spend a night. Duh.
Archery gear and X-men uniform on, Gawain ran full speed on the Mansion grounds. It felt good to be outside in the cool quiet night, in the fresh air and the moonlight - even the Danger Room could not simulate that. The Mansion grounds provided an excellent natural obstacle course: there were trees to avoid, branches to grab, fences and bushes to jump, and for some extra fun, Mirror had also activated some of the security measures. For someone watching from the outside, the young knight's path was an erratic beeline over the grounds - provided that someone did not know the layout of all the security traps.
The plan was simple: keep moving until midnight was over.

Chase finally reached the kitchen, ambling towards the cabinet where the glasses were kept, and climbing onto the counter to reach them. Once a glass was retrieved, he closed the cabinet quietly, and made his way over to the sink by shuffling along the countertop on his knees. It wasn’t that Chase was trying to be different. It was just that the tiled floor was cold, and he preferred the counter. Kneeling at the sink’s edge, the child began to fill his glass with tap water.
A flash of motion snagged Chase’s attention, and the child looked up sharply, on high-alert. If someone caught him up at this hour, he’d be so busted. What the nine-year-old saw, looked like a ninja, with how they were dressed. And they were charging haphazardly about the lawn. A ninja… or a spy?!
Chase flicked the water off and fussed with the window, momentarily. He knew it could open, because it was occasionally used to ventilate the kitchen when the cook was baking. After minor fussing, the window popped open, and Chase managed to slide it up. It was too small to be a security concern, because an average-sized person couldn’t clamber through the window. A nine-year-old could, though.
Chase wriggled out through the open window, glass of water in-hand, and sat on the ledge, watching as the man (who he assumed to be a ninja) charged through the trees and leapt of obstacles. He wasn't trying to be subtle or secretive about his intrigue. In fact, if the child had been wearing shoes, he would have clambered right out of the window and darted after the odd-looking man. As it were, Chase wasn't wearing shoes.
Growing breasts was a pain. It always had been. Not like Maya was especially gifted in that department, but it still messed royally with the archery uniform and she bolted across the Mansion grounds. As midnight rolled around, the mirrorwalker finally gave up, came to a sudden halt in the patch of light in front of the kitchen window, and frowned.
"Sh*t."
Wiggling commenced as the shifting finished up its work, and Maya tugged on the straps of the archery west, making a mental note to talk to Kealey about the uniform problem. This could be very annoying in an actual combat situation. Combing her suddenly long hair out of her face, she huffed. So much about shifting in a fight.

Chase watched as the ninja-man came to a halt, spying Chase, and Chase stared for a moment. In the darkness, it was easy to become confused over what he was seeing—for a few moments, Chase stared, and then a grin touched his face. No. Way. Ninja-man had just turned into ninja-woman. The little squinted his eyes, and leaned a little closer in an attempt to get a better view, but he lost his balance and ended up sliding out of the window.
“Whoa!” Chase gasped. He landed on his feet, the wet grass squelching beneath unprotected toes, and he managed to keep his balance. So, this gasp of alarm became one of excitement, “No way, you just turned into a girl!”
An exclamation that was otherwise rude, but also blatantly obvious. Chase explained himself with a transformation of his own. He wriggled out of his human-guise, a grin a mile-wide remaining on his unmasked features, “You’re a human-shifter, too! Cool!”
The child bounded closer to the girl, his gaze running up-and-down her speculatively. He was about to excitedly introduce himself, but gave pause. He was breaking curfew.
Maya abandoned her struggle with the straps and looked up at the chiming voice. There was a kid sitting in the kitchen window... and there he went, sliding off the windowsill onto the grass. He looked like he was bouncing with enthusiasm. Oh joy. Was that the counselor's kid?...
>>“You’re a human-shifter, too! Cool! You aren’t a teacher, are you…?”
The boyish face turned into something distinctly mutant. Too? That expained a whole lot. Maya sighed and finally snapped the archery vest open. She needed to figure out a better solution for this gear.
"Team leader, actually." she smirked, looking at him "And I only shift genders. You should put some shoes on."

Chase took a swig of his water, staring up at the girl with wide eyes. No, she replied, “team leader” was her real title.
“So you’re one of the superheroes!” Chase concluded, finishing his sip of water. That was even better. And so cool. The budding fanatic of comic books introduced himself in a singsong voice for, though the gender-shifter recognized him, he didn’t recognize her.
“I’m Chase,” Chase said, stopping in front of the gender-shifter as he took another sip of water. The girl told him that he needed shoes, and Chase looked at his feet, “Gender-shifting is close enough. You’re still shapeshifting, right?”
The child also added-on, “And my shoes are inside. I was getting a drink of water.”
Which meant, he hadn’t thought to grab shoes. Retrieving shoes would require them to relocate. He wiggled his toes, then deciding that his feet would be fine, and he looked back up at the gender-shifter.
“Why were you running about all crazy-like outside? And dressed like a ninja?” Chase inquired, “It’s after curfew.”
Maya snerked at that. Superheroes. When she showed up at Xavier's, nobody knew about the X-men until they were on the team. Kind of like Fight Club. Kids these days...

... kids these days talked a lot. Instead of trying to get a word in edgewise, Maya flung the vest over her shoulder and steered the kid towards the front door of the Mansion, moving around the activated traps.
"Name's Maya. I'm out at night because that's when I shift, and I needed the practice. I guess you could call it shapeshifting. My mother is a human shifter, she can become anyone. I only go from girl to boy, and back. Every night."

Chase knew things. Mostly because his mother knew things, so Chase knew things, too. For example, Xavier’s kept superheroes in the basement. Apparently, one had gotten out, and was trying to escape—at least, that’s what Chase’s sleep-deprived brain was telling him. The gender-shifter introduced herself as Maya, and began to steer Chase towards the Mansion’s front door, though she was doing so in a rather zig-zag fashion. She fluidly answered a good chunk of his questions, and Chase absorbed the information like a sponge.
“Your mom’s a human-shifter?” Chase gasped, “I’ve never met another human-shifter!”
Chase looked over his shoulder, or tried to, but being guided towards the front door and in constant motion made it hard to do so.
“Does her brain stay the same when she shifts?” Chase inquired, “Or does her brain change as she does?”
He tried to turn, stuttering as he spoke, “’cuz I’ve been- ‘cuz I’ve been in these- these, uh, classes, where they’re teaching me how to control my shifting, and it gets really confusing, ‘cuz I’m not a psychic, but I’m a bit more than a human shifter, and if her brain changes when she turns into other people, that would mean she’s like me.”
Chase finally managed to roll free of Maya’s hold on his shoulder, when they were almost to the front of the Mansion, “And it would be cool to be able to be other people without losing your brain, you know? That way, if you turn into a crazy person, you don’t turn crazy.”
Even if Maya was not a full human-shifter, she still shifted, and her mother was a human-shifter. So that meant Maya had to at least kind-of understand what Chase was saying. And, being in the presence of someone that was so similar to him made Chase less apprehensive, and gave him a strange compulsion to chatter as if he were actually an extrovert.
Though, with the mention of his brain becoming crazy when turning into a crazy person, Chase began to clam-up quickly. Surely, Maya had heard of this, the few months ago that it had happened. There really only was one human-shifter who was the son of the counselor, who'd accidentally attacked another student in the library.
>>“Your mom’s a human-shifter? I’ve never met another human-shifter!”
"I haven't either" Maya admitted with a smirk. The kid looked overly excited. She could understand that. She had only met another mirrorwalker before, for a brief moment, but it was nothing like any other connection.
>>“Does her brain stay the same when she shifts? She tied her best to steer the kid to the door, but the flow of words and the bouncing was kind of hard to manage at once. From the excited chatter she pried out the fact that somehow the kid's mind mimicked the person's he shifted into. That had to be messed up.
>>“And it would be cool to be able to be other people without losing your brain, you know? That way, if you turn into a crazy person, you don’t turn crazy.”
Oh. That. She had heard about the incident. People were whispering about that. She felt sorry for the kid. No nine-year-old should have his head messed with.
"It takes a lot of time to learn how to control your powers" she admitted, nudging him towards the door "I still can't control mine. Takes practice and patience I guess."
Opening the door she steered Chase inside and to the living room.

Chase allowed himself to be guided through the door, internally wondering where he was going to be shepherded to. Probably his room, when one considered the time.
“Practice and patience,” Chase echoed, “And time.”
That sounded like a lot of work.
Rather than herding the child upstairs towards the dormitories, Chase was guided into the living room. Once there, he stepped away from Maya’s guiding hand, and took a seat upon the couch, bunching his knees up to his chest and sipping water from his glass. He was hanging out with a big kid. He was so cool.
>> "Who is working with you on this?"
“The mutation control teacher lady,” Chase replied simply, “With the big kids. And kids with powers kinda like mine. Sometimes, this squirrel-shifter kid, we just run around trying not to shift. And then other times, a girl who remembers things that happened by touching them, I try not to shift by touching things.”
Chase gave a contemplative sip of his water, “It doesn’t work, though. I’m too young. At least, the teacher lady says so—says I need to grow into my powers a bit more before I try training them. Mom likes it, though.”

"You're Miss T's kid right?" Maya dropped her archery gear and sat down on the couch next to the Talkative One. He was kind of amusing to listen to. He was very young for an active mutation; she could relate to that.
"I was born with active shifting" she explained to him with a small smile "I never learned to control it, some mutations just don' work that way. I learned about my other powers though. They have been changing lately; maybe yours will change too when you get older. Besides, better not argue with Granny."

Chase rubbed his head as the inquiry was voiced, grinning bashfully.
“Yeah, that’s my mom,” Chase said, rubbing his head. As a means to explain why his human guise didn’t look like hers, Chase murmured, “Mama adopted me. I haven’t had time to think of a new human face.”
Besides which, it had taken Chase years to learn this one. It’d take years more to learn another. As Maya sat down beside him, Chase turned his body slightly, so he was facing his fellow shifter. As she spoke of her own powers, Chase listened attentively, nibbling on his thumb before taking another sip of water.
“So I might never learn to control it,” Chase mumbled. He’d go his whole life, not being to touch anyone except for Adapteds, or while in an Adapted field. He smiled faintly, though. Maybe his powers would change. And for his sake, it was better not to argue with Granny.
Chase giggled, “Granny likes me. I’m quiet and polite. I’ve seen what she’s done to the rude, loud big kids.”
Chase sipped more water, nearly polishing-off the large glass, and setting it aside. He might get thirsty later.
“Yeah, anyone,” Chase replied, smiling faintly, “Guys, girls… big kids, little kids, grown-ups, old people… But I need something from them, if I want to change the quick and easy way. Or else, it takes me forever to learn how to copy them.”
Chase fidgeted with his pajama bottoms as he continued to explain, “That’s why I work with the girl who can touch things and see the past—because my powers a little bit the same, but not much. I can’t touch things that belong to other people for long. Or touch other people. Start turning into them.”
>>“Yeah, that’s my mom. Mama adopted me. I haven’t had time to think of a new human face.”
Maya nodded at that. It was weird to think about it - Chase's "human face", as he called it, did not look anything like Miss Taylor, or the cop she was dating either. He wondered what it would be like to adopt a new face every once in a while. Not like she ever wanted to look different from Gawain or Maya.

She couldn't help but feel a little bit sorry for the kid. Losing yourself every time you touch someone else, that had to be hard.
"You know, I dated a girl once, she was a chameleon" she smiled a bit at the memory "she had a hard time controlling her power too. Every time she forgot, she started changing colors and disappearing into the background. When she was upset, she just went carpet-colored." she chuckled softly "A lot of us have to work a lot to learn to control our powers. Even more when they activate early." she looked at the kid "Even my mom had a hard time using hers. Whenever she shifted into someone else, it took her almost a day to get it right."

Chase picked at his pajama pants more, listening as the gender-shifter talked about this girl that s/he had dated. A chameleon.
“Like a giant lizard chameleon?” Chase interjected, before remembering that Maya was telling a story and simmering down once again, listening timidly. He hummed and pouted his lips faintly when Maya said that the girl vanished every time she forgot to stay visible. Luckliy, Chase had gotten good enough at his human face not to forget that thing. And, when she was angry, she turned carpet-colored.
Chase giggled at that. What an awful color to be.
The topic of conversation fluidly turned back to him, though—it took a lot of work to learn you powers, particularly if you were a little kid. Sometimes, when you were an adult, even. Chase groaned and sipped the last of his water. That’s why he was in the class—the practice, the work. It would have been so much easier to be a normal nine-year-old with normal nine-year-old worries. Like getting up on-time to watch Saturday morning cartoons.
Having finished his water, Chase set the empty glass aside, turning himself around so that he was sitting opposite of how most people sat on the couch—with his back to the butt cushion and his legs dangling off the back of the chair.
“Before you were a big kid,” Chase began to ask Maya, “Did you want to be a superhero?”
